6. The Influence of Race/Ethnicity, Gender, Age, Social Support, Religion/Spirituality, and Occupational History on the Total Wellness of Counseling Practicum Graduate Students: A Pilot Study.

Abstract

This study sought to identify and explore the differences in participants' Total Wellness scores with respect to race/ethnicity, gender, age, social support, spirituality, and occupational history. It was asserted that there would be observable differences in the delineated demographic research factors and that these differences would influence students' Total Wellness as measured by the 5F-Wel Inventory. The sample was comprised of 30 graduate students enrolled in a community mental health counseling program. Hierarchal linear regression indicated that demographic variables did not predict a change in Total Wellness when controlling for pretest scores; however, pretest Total Wellness scores were significantly predictive of post-test Total Wellness scores. Implications for counseling practice and clinical supervision, suggestions for integrating wellness into counseling education, as well as areas for future research including replication and expansion of the current study are offered. 8. Alcohol problems in Alaska Natives: risk, resiliency, and native treatment approaches

Abstract

This paper summarizes the literature on alcohol problems in Alaska Natives, briefly summarizing risk and resiliency factors but focusing on Native and Western healing practices. A story (The Red Shoes) is used to illustrate many of the cultural factors that are influencing the role of alcohol in Alaska Native life. Treatment factors explored include both Alaska Native and Western Approaches. The Western approach focused on is Narrative Therapy, which has not yet been applied to Alaska Native populations. Abstract

Akyıl, Yudum (Dogus Author) Intergenerational value transmission is a systemic phenomenon that affects parent-child relationships. However, there is a dearth of information about bidirectional value transmission processes from the perspectives of the parents. Based on an eco-systemic perspective, the researcher aimed to understand the parents experience of transmission of values with their adolescent children. This process included: What they chose to transmit, how they had tried to transmit, and the ways they negotiated value differences. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews in Istanbul, Turkey with 6 upper-middle class parents who had children between the ages of 13 and 19. Interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed 6 main themes that described parents experiences: (a) family connectedness, (b) transfer strategies, (c) transformations, (d) a changing world, (e) reflecting on parenting, and (f) process between the parents. The researcher then discusses the implications for clinicians and researchers.

20. Effect of coping on substance use in adolescent girls: a dyadic analysis of parent and adolescent perceptions.

Abstract

This study retrospectively investigated the relationship between internalising/externalising behaviours, coping behaviours and substance use in adolescent girls using data from 91 mother–daughter dyads. Participants filled out self- or parent questionnaires that incorporated Achenbach's [Achenbach, T. M. (1991). Manual for the youth self-report and 1991 profile. Burlington, VT: Department of Psychiatry, University of Vermont] Young Adult Behavior Checklist (YABCL) and Young Adult Self-Report Form (YASR) to measure internalising/externalising and drug use, as well as additional questions on coping behaviours. Data analysis included exploratory factor analysis, linear regression and structural equation modelling utilising a common fate model for the analysis of dyadic data. The results demonstrated a significant positive relationship between escape/avoidance coping and internalising/externalising and a significant positive relationship between externalising and drug use. Abstract

It is well documented that mental illness impacts not only the person diagnosed but also the family; however, not much is known about family functioning, coping, and distress in the family of the person with the mental illness. Utilizing online surveys of members of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the following study explored these factors in families with at least one person diagnosed with a mental illness, in order to get a closer look at how counselors and family therapists might assist these families’ unique needs. Family variables such as coping style, family functioning, and distress were tested. Other factors such as race/ethnicity, type and severity of mental illness, time and energy spent caregiving, emotional closeness, and amount of and satisfaction with mental health treatment were examined. Relationships among coping, stress and functioning were found, and meditational models were explored. A key finding was the importance of passive appraisal coping to positive family communication, functioning, and satisfaction. Families with higher levels of distress were less likely to report better family functioning, communication, or satisfaction. Mental health treatment satisfaction was related to higher levels of family support and reframing coping and lower levels of overall distress, which were then linked to more balanced family flexibility and higher family satisfaction. Abstract

The authors reviewed the feminist couple therapy literature from 1995 to 2006. They summarized this large body of work into several key themes. The first revealed that feminist couples therapists are continuing to discuss and deconstruct gender issues in couple therapy. The second showed that feminists believe that therapists should be educated both academically and personally about culture and diversity so as to support couples in their therapy around their own issues of diversity as well as learning to deal with issues of social justice as a couple. In the third theme, the authors introduced readers to feminists' emphasis on connection and empathy within couple and sex therapy, And, in the fourth, the authors explored feminists' work with power in couple therapy as they applied to couple therapy in general as well as around the specific topics of: balancing family and work and therapy for familial violence. Abstract

This study explored the interrelationship between Deaf identity and self-concept. Very little research has explored Deaf identity and none has explored how perceptions of fit with the Deaf culture and Hearing culture influence self-concept. Conceptually, this study looks at cultural identification as falling along two dimensions-identification with the Deaf culture and identification with the Hearing (majority) culture, resulting in four categorical descriptors-culturally hearing, marginal, immersed, and bicultural. It was hypothesized that those who identify with both the hearing and Deaf culture (bicultural individuals) would have the best self-conccpt while those who identified as marginal would have the worst self-concept. The participants consisted of 46 students enrolled in a transitional program for the deaf and deaf and hard of hearing university students. Results supported the hypotheses (bicultural individuals had the highest self-concept and marginal individuals had the lowest). Additional tentative and exploratory hypotheses are also discussed. This paper focuses on clinical work with families of. youth who are coming out to their families. Societal attitudes towards queers are changing, yet many families continue to hold negative beliefs about homosexuality. We discuss what therapists need to know in order to work with these families and provide specific guidelines for this work. Assessment topics are suggested, as are clinical techniques recommended for work with families with a queer member. Abstract

Against the demographic backdrop of an aging society, this study investigated the degree to which accredited Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) programs incorporate gerontological content in their curricula and the extent to which faculty affiliated with these programs have gerontological interests and/or are engaged in scholarly work related to gerontology. Data were collected from program “self-study” reports submitted to the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). Documentation in these reports includes both course syllabi and faculty vitae. The study's findings indicate that only minimal coverage of gerontological and later-life family issues is addressed by the accredited MFT programs. Only 8.9% of the MFT courses in these programs incorporated gerontological or later-life family content to some degree. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

49. Three Aspects of the Therapeutic Conversation in Couples Therapy

Abstract

Feminist scholars have revealed the importance of examining the influence of gender on the therapeutic process. Gender differences in the treatment of clients may reveal inequitable or traditionally Stereotypie treatment of clients by therapists. This study examined gender differences in three conversational strategies widely used by therapists: expressions of empathy or understanding, compliments or praise, and challenges or requests for change. Fourteen tapes of live therapy sessions conducted by “master” therapists were examined using an exploratory, qualitative methodology based on Conversation Analysis. Results of this exploration revealed that therapists who are not self identified as “feminist challenged female clients more than male clients, and complimented male clients more than female clients. Feminist therapists challenged male clients more than female clients, and complimented female clients more than male clients. Feminist therapists used more challenges designed to facilitate non-stereo-typic gender behavior in both male and female clients. Only male therapists used disrespectful challenges of female clients, and were more often disrespectful to female clients than to male clients. Implications for the therapist-client relationship and the feminist critique are provided.

Abstract

This article reviews the videotape Values-Sensitive Family Therapy With Dr. Bill Doherty: Family Therapy With the Experts. The videotape is in three segments. In the first segment, Doherty is interviewed by Jon Carlson and Diane Kjos about his model. According to the reviewer, he found this part to be the weakest segment. In the next segment, Doherty illustrates his approach through a consultation interview with on of Carlson's clients, who is experiencing difficulty with a moral decision. The final segment of the video involves a discussion with the graduate students who have been watching the session. These students ask some challenging questions and Doherty handles them with aplomb. The reviewer relates that he found it enjoyable to watch Doherty spell out his model and discuss family therapy models, family studies research, and morality with equal facility. This segment lasts about 40 minutes, and the overall videotape is nearly two hours long. According to the reviewer, he enjoyed the video. He had never seen Doherty at work and found him to be an engaging and skilled therapist and a clear-spoken advocate of his model. He believes the video would be beneficial for both beginning and seasoned therapists.
