Abstract

We forecast constraints on cosmological parameters enabled by three surveys conducted with SPT-3G, the third-generation camera on the South Pole Telescope. The surveys cover separate regions of 1500, 2650, and 6000 ${\rm deg}^{2}$ to different depths, in total observing 25% of the sky. These regions will be measured to white noise levels of roughly 2.5, 9, and 12 $\mu{\rm K-arcmin}$, respectively, in CMB temperature units at 150 GHz by the end of 2024. The survey also includes measurements at 95 and 220 GHz, which have noise levels a factor of ~1.2 and 3.5 times higher than 150 GHz, respectively, with each band having a polarization noise level ~$\sqrt{\text{2}}$ times higher than the temperature noise. We use a novel approach to obtain the covariance matrices for jointly and optimally estimated gravitational lensing potential bandpowers and unlensed CMB temperature and polarization bandpowers. We demonstrate the ability to test the $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ model via the consistency of cosmological parameters constrained independently from SPT-3G and Planck data, and consider the improvement in constraints on $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ extension parameters from a joint analysis of SPT-3G and Planck data. Abstract

There has been considerable controversy about pre- versus postsynaptic expression of memory-related long-term potentiation (LTP), with corresponding disputes about underlying mechanisms. We report here an instance in male mice, in which both types of potentiation are expressed but in separate branches of the same hippocampal afferent. Induction of LTP in the dentate gyrus (DG) branch of the lateral perforant path (LPP) reduces paired-pulse facilitation, is blocked by antagonism of cannabinoid receptor type 1, and is not affected by suppression of postsynaptic actin polymerization. These observations are consistent with presynaptic expression. The opposite pattern of results was obtained in the LPP branch that innervates the distal dendrites of CA3: LTP did not reduce paired-pulse facilitation, was unaffected by the cannabinoid receptor blocker, and required postsynaptic actin filament assembly. Differences in the two LPP termination sites were also noted for frequency facilitation of synaptic responses, an effect that was reproduced in a two-step simulation by small adjustments to vesicle release dynamics. These results indicate that different types of glutamatergic neurons impose different forms of filtering and synaptic plasticity on their afferents. They also suggest that inputs are routed to, and encoded by, different sites within the hippocampus depending upon the pattern of activity arriving over the parent axon.

This pilot study explores the capillary and non-capillary peripapillary perfusion changes of the retina in TRO eyes without dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A).Methods: Non-capillary and capillary peripapillary perfusion densities were calculated using single 4.5 × 4.5mm en face “RPC layer” OCT-A scans of 8 TRO patients without DON (8 eyes, mean age 40.6 years, range 23– 69 years). Results were compared to a previously published dataset of 133 healthy controls (133 eyes, mean 41.5 years, range 11– 83 years). The strength of association was measured between OCT-A perfusion densities and clinical measures of TRO.Results: Non-capillary peripapillary perfusion density in TRO eyes was found to be significantly decreased compared to healthy controls (TRO group 15.4 ± 2.9% vs controls 21.5 ± 3.1%; p < 0.0001). Capillary peripapillary perfusion densities showed no significant difference (TRO group 42.5 ± 1.8% vs controls 42.5 ± 1.5%; p = 1.0). Clinical measures of disease did not correlate well with OCT-A perfusion densities (p> 0.05).Conclusion: These findings may represent decreased blood flow and subclinical ischemia to the optic nerve. 10. The transformative nature of networks within contemporary art practice

Abstract

Since the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1991, it has had a significant impact on contemporary art. As a consequence, however, networks are almost exclusively considered as technologically determined, art produced is digital, refers to the internet and is more often than not specifically web-based. This research redefines the role of networks in contemporary art. It proposes that networks are not a specific technology that provides a means for art practice to occur but are a concept that transforms practice and enables a networked art. Networked art is a continuation of twentieth century developments in art including cybernetic art, systems aesthetics, new media art and relational aesthetics. The research discusses these and considers how practice became systemised through strategies such as the dematerialization of art as object (Lippard, 1997) and the renouncement of objecthood (Fried, 1998). Equally important is the emergence of cybernetics and systems theory that explained concepts such as process and behaviour frequently employed in art practice. By defining a network as a type of system, networked art is foremost concerned with connections or links and considers the resulting behaviours that occur. Networked art is therefore not centred on networks as form. It can adapt as technologies evolve over time and as such is considered post specific technologies and the disciplines connected with them. Emerging out of my ongoing art practice this practice-led research makes an original contribution to knowledge in the field of contemporary art in three ways. Firstly, it demonstrates how networks in contemporary art do not have a basis in a specific technology since they have been employed before current technologies. Secondly, the research explains networked art through the development of a framework and practice as research that informs each other. Thirdly, the research discusses emergent processes, themes and content and clarifies how networked art positions itself within current contemporary art discourse as a post-disciplinary practice.

Abstract

We report a Dalitz plot analysis of charmless hadronic decays of charged B mesons to the final state KS0π+π0 using the full BABAR data set of 470.9±2.8 million BB events collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance. We measure the overall branching fraction and CP asymmetry to be B(B+→K0π+π0)=(31.8±1.8±2.1-0.0+6.0)×10-6 and ACP(B+→K0π+π0)=0.07±0.05±0.03-0.03+0.02, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the signal model, respectively. This is the first measurement of the branching fraction for B+→K0π+π0. We find first evidence of a CP asymmetry in B+→K∗(892)+π0 decays: ACP(B+→K∗(892)+π0)=-0.52±0.14±0.04-0.02+0.04. The significance of this asymmetry, including systematic and model uncertainties, is 3.4 standard deviations. We also measure the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for three other intermediate decay modes.

Abstract

Memory is strongly influenced by stress but underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, we used electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, and network simulations to probe the role of the endogenous, stress-related neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in modulating hippocampal function. We focused on neuronal excitability and the incidence of sharp waves (SPWs), a form of intrinsic network activity associated with memory consolidation. Specifically, we blocked endogenous CRH using 2 chemically distinct antagonists of the principal hippocampal CRH receptor, CRHR1. The antagonists caused a modest reduction of spontaneous excitatory transmission onto CA3 pyramidal cells, mediated, in part by effects on IAHP. This was accompanied by a decrease in the incidence but not amplitude of SPWs, indicating that the synaptic actions of CRH are sufficient to alter the output of a complex hippocampal network. A biophysical model of CA3 described how local actions of CRH produce macroscopic consequences including the observed changes in SPWs. Collectively, the results provide a first demonstration of the manner in which subtle synaptic effects of an endogenously released neuropeptide influence hippocampal network level operations and, in the case of CRH, may contribute to the effects of acute stress on memory.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B0->D(*)CP h0 decays, where the light neutral hadron h0 is a pi0, eta or omega meson, and the neutral D meson is reconstructed in the CP eigenstates K+ K-, K0S pi0 or K0S omega. The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays. The hypothesis of no mixing-induced CP violation is excluded in these decays at the level of 5.4 standard deviations., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We study the lepton forward-backward asymmetry AFB and the longitudinal K∗ polarization FL, as well as an observable P2 derived from them, in the rare decays B→K∗+, where + is either e+e- or μ+μ-, using the full sample of 471 million BB-events collected at the (4S) resonance with the BABAR, detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider. We separately fit and report results for the K∗0(892)+ and K∗+(892)+ final states, as well as their combination K∗+, in five disjoint dilepton mass-squared bins. An angular analysis of B+→K∗++ decays is presented here for the first time.

We describe in detail a previously published measurement of CP violation in B0-B¯0 oscillations, based on an integrated luminosity of 425.7 fb-1 collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEPII collider. We apply a novel technique to a sample of about 6 million B¯0→D∗+-ν¯ decays selected with partial reconstruction of the D∗+ meson. The charged lepton identifies the flavor of one B meson at its decay time, the flavor of the other B is determined by kaon tagging. We determine a CP violating asymmetry ACP=(N(B0B0)-N(B¯0B¯0))/(N(B0B0)+N(B¯0B¯0))=(0.06±0.17-0.32+0.38)% corresponding to ΔCP=1-|q/p|=(0.29±0.84-1.61+1.88)×10-3. This measurement is consistent and competitive with those obtained at the B factories with dilepton events.

Abstract

We report on measurements of the decays of B¯ mesons into the semileptonic final states B¯→D^(*)π^(+)π^(-)ℓ^(-)ν¯, where D^(*) represents a D or D^(*) meson and ℓ^(-) is an electron or a muon. These measurements are based on 471×10^(6) BB ¯ pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the SLAC asymmetric B factory PEP-II. We determine the branching fraction ratios R_{π^{+}π^{-}}^{(*)}=B(B[over ¯]→D^{(*)}π^{+}π^{-}ℓ^{-}ν[over ¯])/B(B[over ¯]→D^{(*)}ℓ^{-}ν[over ¯]) using events in which the second B meson is fully reconstructed. We find R_{π^{+}π^{-}}=0.067±0.010±0.008 and R_{π^{+}π^{-}}^{*}=0.019±0.005±0.004, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Based on these results and assuming isospin invariance, we estimate that B[over ¯]→D^{(*)}ππℓ^{-}ν[over ¯] decays, where π denotes either a π^{±} and π^{0} meson, account for up to half the difference between the measured inclusive semileptonic branching fraction to charm hadrons and the corresponding sum of previously measured exclusive branching fractions.

Abstract

We present measurements of Collins asymmetries in the inclusive process e+e-→h1h2X, h1h2=KK, Kπ, ππ, at the center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV, using a data sample of 468 fb-1 collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC National Accelerator Center. Considering hadrons in opposite thrust hemispheres of hadronic events, we observe clear azimuthal asymmetries in the ratio of unlike sign to like sign, and unlike sign to all charged h1h2 pairs, which increase with hadron energies. The Kπ asymmetries are similar to those measured for the ππ pairs, whereas those measured for high-energy KK pairs are, in general, larger.

Abstract

Charge asymmetry in the processes e+e-→μ+μ-γ and e+e-→π+π-γ is measured using 232 fb-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at e+e- center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV. An observable is introduced and shown to be very robust against detector asymmetries while keeping a large sensitivity to the physical charge asymmetry that results from the interference between initial- and final-state radiation (FSR). The asymmetry is determined as a function of the invariant mass of the final-state tracks from production threshold to a few GeV/c2. It is compared to the expectation from QED for e+e-→μ+μ-γ, and from theoretical models for e+e-→π+π-γ. A clear interference pattern is observed in e+e-→π+π-γ, particularly in the vicinity of the f2(1270) resonance. The inferred rate of lowest-order FSR production is consistent with the QED expectation for e+e-→μ+μ-γ, and is negligibly small for e+e-→π+π-γ.

Abstract

The e+e-→K+K- cross section and charged-kaon electromagnetic form factor are measured in the e+e- center-of-mass energy range (E) from 2.6 to 8.0 GeV using the initial-state radiation technique with an undetected photon. The study is performed using 469fb-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II2 e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The form factor is found to decrease with energy faster than 1/E2 and approaches the asymptotic QCD prediction. Production of the K+K- final state through the J/ψ and ψ(2S) intermediate states is observed. The results for the kaon form factor are used together with data from other experiments to perform a model-independent determination of the relative phases between electromagnetic (single-photon) and strong amplitudes in J/ψ and ψ(2S)→K+K- decays. The values of the branching fractions measured in the reaction e+e-→K+K- are shifted relative to their true values due to interference between resonant and nonresonant amplitudes. The values of these shifts are determined to be about ±5% for the J/ψ meson and ±15% for the ψ(2S) meson.

26. Protein synthesis and consolidation of memory-related synaptic changes

Abstract

Although sometimes disputed, it has been assumed for several decades that new proteins synthesized following a learning event are required for consolidation of subsequent memory. Published findings and new results described here challenge this idea. Protein synthesis inhibitors did not prevent Theta Bust Stimulation (TBS) from producing extremely stable long-term potentiation (LTP) in experiments using standard hippocampal slice protocols. However, the inhibitors were effective under conditions that likely depleted protein levels prior to attempts to induce the potentiation effect. Experiments showed that induction of LTP at one input, and thus a prior episode of protein synthesis, eliminated the effects of inhibitors on potentiation of a second input even in depleted slices. These observations suggest that a primary role of translation and transcription processes initiated by learning events is to prepare neurons to support future learning. Other work has provided support for an alternative theory of consolidation. Specifically, if the synaptic changes that support memory are to endure, learning events/TBS must engage a complex set of signaling processes that reorganize and re-stabilize the spine actin cytoskeleton. This is accomplished in fast (10 min) and slow (50 min) stages with the first requiring integrin activation and the second a recovery of integrin functioning. These results align with, and provide mechanisms for, the long-held view that memories are established and consolidated over a set of temporally distinct phases.

Processes that reverse long-term potentiation in field CA1 are not operative in the lateral perforant path: multiple lines of evidence indicate that this reflects differences in adenosine signalling. Adenosine A1 receptors modulate baseline synaptic transmission in the lateral olfactory tract but not the associational afferents of the piriform cortex. Levels of ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73), an enzyme that converts extracellular ATP into adenosine, are markedly different between regions and correlate with adenosine signalling and the efficacy of theta pulse stimulation in reversing long-term potentiation. Variations in transmitter mobilization, CD73 levels, and afferent divergence result in multivariate differences in signal processing through nodes in the cortico-hippocampal network. The present study evaluated learning-related synaptic operations across the serial stages of the olfactory cortex-hippocampus network. Theta frequency stimulation produced very different time-varying responses in the Schaffer-commissural projections than in the lateral perforant path (LPP), an effect associated with distinctions in transmitter mobilization. Long-term potentiation (LTP) had a higher threshold in LPP field potential studies but not in voltage clamped neurons; coupled with input/output relationships, these results suggest that LTP threshold differences reflect the degree of input divergence. Theta pulse stimulation erased LTP in CA1 but not in the dentate gyrus (DG), although adenosine eliminated potentiation in both areas, suggesting that theta increases extracellular adenosine to a greater degree in CA1. Moreover, adenosine A1 receptor antagonism had larger effects on theta responses in CA1 than in the DG, and concentrations of ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) were much higher in CA1. Input/output curves for two connections in the piriform cortex were similar to those for the LPP, whereas adenosine modulation again correlated with levels of CD73. In sum, multiple relays in a network extending from the piriform cortex through the hippocampus can be differentiated along three dimensions (input divergence, transmitter mobilization, adenosine modulation) that potently influence throughput and plasticity. A model that incorporates the regional differences, supplemented with data for three additional links, suggests that network output goes through three transitions during the processing of theta input. It is proposed that individuated relays allow the circuit to deal with different types of behavioural problems.

Abstract

We present a search for a neutral, long-lived particle L that is produced in e+ e- collisions and decays at a significant distance from the e+ e- interaction point into various flavor combinations of two oppositely charged tracks. The analysis uses an e+ e- data sample with a luminosity of 489.1  fb(-1) collected by the BABAR detector at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and just below the ϒ(4S). Fitting the two-track mass distribution in search of a signal peak, we do not observe a significant signal, and set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the L production cross section, branching fraction, and reconstruction efficiency for six possible two-body L decay modes as a function of the L mass. The efficiency is given for each final state as a function of the mass, lifetime, and transverse momentum of the candidate, allowing application of the upper limits to any production model. In addition, upper limits are provided on the branching fraction B(B→XsL), where Xs is a strange hadronic system.

Abstract

A search is presented for the decay (1S)→γA0, A0→cc¯, where A0 is a candidate for the CP-odd Higgs boson of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. The search is based on data collected with the BABAR detector at the (2S) resonance. A sample of (1S) mesons is selected via the decay (2S)→π+π-(1S). The A0→cc¯ decay is identified through the reconstruction of hadronic D0, D+, and D∗(2010)+ meson decays. No significant signal is observed. The measured 90% confidence-level upper limits on the product branching fraction B((1S)→γA0)×B(A0→cc¯) range from 7.4×10-5 to 2.4×10-3 for A0 masses from 4.00 to 8.95GeV/c2 and 9.10 to 9.25GeV/c2, where the region between 8.95 and 9.10GeV/c2 is excluded because of background from (2S)→γχbJ(1P), χbJ(1P)→γ(1S) decays.

Abstract

Based on a sample of 500 million e+e-→cc¯ events recorded by the BABAR detector at c.m. energies of close to 10.6 GeV, we report on a study of the decay D0→π-e+νe. We measure the ratio of branching fractions, RD=B(D0→π-e+νe)/B(D0→K-π+)=0.0713±0.0017stat±0.0024syst, and use the present world average for B(D0→K-π+) to obtain B(D0→π-e+νe)=(2.770±0.068stat±0.092syst±0.037ext)×10-3 where the third error accounts for the uncertainty on the branching fraction for the reference channel. The measured dependence of the differential branching fraction on q2, the four-momentum transfer squared between the D and the π meson, is compared to various theoretical predictions for the hadronic form factor, f+,Dπ(q2), and the normalization |Vcd|×f+,Dπ(q2=0)=0.1374±0.0038stat±0.0022syst±0.0009ext. is extracted from a fit to data. Using the most recent LQCD prediction of f+,Dπ(q2=0)=0.666±0.029, we obtain |Vcd|=0.206±0.007exp±0.009LQCD. Assuming, instead, |Vcd|=|Vus|=0.2252±0.0009, we obtain f+,Dπ(q2=0)=0.610±0.020exp±0.005ext. The q2 dependence of f+,Dπ(q2) is compared to a variety of multipole parametrizations. This information is applied to B0→π-e+νe decays and, combined with an earlier B0→π-e+νe measurement by BABAR, is used to derive estimates of |Vub|.

Abstract

We perform a measurement of the τ→lγνν¯ (l=e,μ) branching fractions for a minimum photon energy of 10 MeV in the τ rest frame, using 431fb-1 of e+e- collisions collected at the center-of-mass energy of the (4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings. We find B(τ→μγνν¯)=(3.69±0.03±0.10)×10-3 and B(τ→eγνν¯)=(1.847±0.015±0.052)×10-2, where the first quoted error is statistical and the second is systematic. These results are substantially more precise than previous measurements.

Abstract

We present Dalitz plot analyses for the decays of B mesons to D-D0K+ and D¯0D0K+. We report the observation of the Ds1∗(2700)+ resonance in these two channels and obtain measurements of the mass M(Ds1∗(2700)+)=2699-7+14MeV/c2 and of the width Γ(Ds1∗(2700)+)=127-19+24MeV, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. In addition, we observe an enhancement in the D0K+ invariant mass around 2350-2500MeV/c2 in both decays B0→D-D0K+ and B+→D¯0D0K+, which we are not able to interpret. The results are based on 429fb-1 of data containing 471×106BB¯ pairs collected at the (4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Abstract

We present Dalitz plot analyses for the decays of B mesons to D-D0K+ and D¯0D0K+. We report the observation of the Ds1∗(2700)+ resonance in these two channels and obtain measurements of the mass M(Ds1∗(2700)+)=2699-7+14MeV/c2 and of the width Γ(Ds1∗(2700)+)=127-19+24MeV, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. In addition, we observe an enhancement in the D0K+ invariant mass around 2350-2500MeV/c2 in both decays B0→D-D0K+ and B+→D¯0D0K+, which we are not able to interpret. The results are based on 429fb-1 of data containing 471×106BB¯ pairs collected at the (4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Abstract

Based on a sample of 500 million e+e-→cc¯ events recorded by the BABAR detector at c.m. energies of close to 10.6 GeV, we report on a study of the decay D0→π-e+νe. We measure the ratio of branching fractions, RD=B(D0→π-e+νe)/B(D0→K-π+)=0.0713±0.0017stat±0.0024syst, and use the present world average for B(D0→K-π+) to obtain B(D0→π-e+νe)=(2.770±0.068stat±0.092syst±0.037ext)×10-3 where the third error accounts for the uncertainty on the branching fraction for the reference channel. The measured dependence of the differential branching fraction on q2, the four-momentum transfer squared between the D and the π meson, is compared to various theoretical predictions for the hadronic form factor, f+,Dπ(q2), and the normalization |Vcd|×f+,Dπ(q2=0)=0.1374±0.0038stat±0.0022syst±0.0009ext. is extracted from a fit to data. Using the most recent LQCD prediction of f+,Dπ(q2=0)=0.666±0.029, we obtain |Vcd|=0.206±0.007exp±0.009LQCD. Assuming, instead, |Vcd|=|Vus|=0.2252±0.0009, we obtain f+,Dπ(q2=0)=0.610±0.020exp±0.005ext. The q2 dependence of f+,Dπ(q2) is compared to a variety of multipole parametrizations. This information is applied to B0→π-e+νe decays and, combined with an earlier B0→π-e+νe measurement by BABAR, is used to derive estimates of |Vub|.

Abstract

We perform a measurement of the τ→lγνν¯ (l=e,μ) branching fractions for a minimum photon energy of 10 MeV in the τ rest frame, using 431fb-1 of e+e- collisions collected at the center-of-mass energy of the (4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings. We find B(τ→μγνν¯)=(3.69±0.03±0.10)×10-3 and B(τ→eγνν¯)=(1.847±0.015±0.052)×10-2, where the first quoted error is statistical and the second is systematic. These results are substantially more precise than previous measurements.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the asymmetry A_{CP} between same-sign inclusive dilepton samples ℓ^{+}ℓ^{+} and ℓ^{-}ℓ^{-} (ℓ=e, μ) from semileptonic B decays in ϒ(4S)→BB[over ¯] events, using the complete data set recorded by the BABAR experiment near the ϒ(4S) resonance, corresponding to 471×10^{6} BB[over ¯] pairs. The asymmetry A_{CP} allows comparison between the mixing probabilities P(B[over ¯]^{0}→B^{0}) and P(B^{0}→B[over ¯]^{0}), and therefore probes CP and T violation. The result, A_{CP}=[-3.9±3.5(stat)±1.9(syst)]×10^{-3}, is consistent with the standard model expectation.

Abstract

Abstract

We study the rare B meson decays B±,0→J/ψK+K-K±,0, B±,0→J/ψφK±,0, and search for B0→J/ψφ, using 469×106 BB¯ events collected at the γ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- asymmetric energy collider. We present new measurements of branching fractions and a study of the J/ψφ mass distribution in search of new charmonium-like states. In addition, we search for the decay B0→J/ψφ and find no evidence of a signal.

Abstract

We describe searches for B meson decays to the charmless vector-vector final states omega omega and omega phi with 471 x 10^6 B Bbar pairs produced in e+ e- annihilation at sqrt(s) = 10.58 GeV using the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We measure the branching fraction B(B0 --> omega omega) = (1.2 +- 0.3 +0.3-0.2) x 10^-6, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, corresponding to a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. We also determine the upper limit B(B0 --> omega phi) < 0.7 x 10^-6 at 90% confidence level. These measurements provide the first evidence for the decay B0 --> omega omega, and an improvement of the upper limit for the decay B0 --> omega phi., Comment: 7 pages, 2 postscript figures

Abstract

We study the decay $\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, reconstructing the \Lambda_{c}^{+} baryon in the $p K^{-}\pi^{+}$ mode, using a data sample of $467\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-2 storage rings at SLAC. We measure branching fractions for decays with intermediate $\Sigma_{c}$ baryons to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2455)^{++}\bar{p}\pi^{-}]=(21.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.0 \pm 5.5) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2520)^{++}\bar{p}\pi^{-}]=(11.5\pm 1.0 \pm 0.5 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2455)^{0}\bar{p}\pi^{+}]=(9.1 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4 \pm 2.4)\times10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2520)^{0}\bar{p}\pi^{+}]= (2.2 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\pm 0.6) \times 10^{-5}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\rightarrow\proton\Km\pi^{+}$ branching fraction, respectively. For decays without $\Sigma_{c}(2455)$ or $\Sigma_{c}(2520)$ resonances, we measure ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}]_{\mathrm{non-\Sigma_{c}}}=(79 \pm 4 \pm 4 \pm 20)\times10^{-5}$. The total branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}]_{\mathrm{total}}=(123 \pm 5 \pm 7 \pm 32)\times10^{-5}$. We examine multibody mass combinations in the resonant three-particle $\Sigma_{c}\bar{p}\pi$ final states and in the four-particle $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ final state, and observe different characteristics for the $\bar{p}\pi$ combination in neutral versus doubly-charged $\Sigma_{c}$ decays., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures

Abstract

We use (121±1) million Υ(3S) and (98±1) million Υ(2S) mesons recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions involving the χbJ(1P,2P) states in exclusive decays with μ+μ-γγ final states. We reconstruct twelve channels in four cascades using two complementary methods. In the first we identify both signal photon candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC), employ a calorimeter timing-based technique to reduce backgrounds, and determine branching-ratio products and fine mass splittings. These results include the best observational significance yet for the χb0(2P)→γΥ(2S) and χb0(1P)→γΥ(1S) transitions. In the second method, we identify one photon candidate in the EMC and one which has converted into an e+e- pair due to interaction with detector material, and we measure absolute product branching fractions. This method is particularly useful for measuring Υ(3S)→γχb1,2(1P) decays. Additionally, we provide the most up-to-date derived branching fractions, matrix elements and mass splittings for χb transitions in the bottomonium system. Using a new technique, we also measure the two lowest-order spin-dependent coefficients in the nonrelativistic QCD Hamiltonian.

Abstract

We report on a search in e+e- annihilations for new π0-like particles produced in association with a τ-lepton pair. These objects, with a similar mass and similar decay modes to π0 mesons, could provide an explanation for the non-asymptotic behavior of the pion-photon transition form factor observed by the BABAR Collaboration. No significant signal is observed, and limits on the production cross section at the level of 73 fb or 370 fb, depending on the model parameters, are determined at 90% confidence level. These upper limits lie below the cross section values needed to explain the BABAR form factor data.
