4. The Effect of Unilateral Versus Bilateral Strength Training on Isometric-Squat Peak Force and Interlimb Asymmetry in Young, Recreationally Strength-Trained Men.

Abstract

Purpose: To compare the effects of bilateral strength training (BLST) versus unilateral strength training (ULST) on changes in peak force (PF) and interlimb asymmetry (ILA) in the isometric squat at a 120° knee angle (ISq120). Method: A total of 31 young, recreationally strength-trained men performed either BLST (n = 18) or ULST (n = 13), twice per week for 6 weeks. The total number of repetitions, duty cycle, and effort were standardized between training groups (ie, differing only in the exercises performed). Changes in PF and ILA were assessed pretraining and posttraining. Results: Comparable increases in PF were observed in the BLST group (mean [SD] change; 17.4% [20.5%], P =.001, standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.45) and the ULST group (11.4% [19.1%], P =.042, SMD = 0.25). No significant changes in symmetry index (SI) scores were observed following BLST (mean [SD] change; 0 [5.7], P =.526, SMD = −0.12) or ULST (+3 [6.0], P =.702, SMD = 0.4). Individual analyses of subjects with marked ILA (ie, baseline SI score > baseline coefficient of variation) revealed a trend toward BLST being more effective at attenuating SI scores in the ISq120. Conclusions: Overall, both BLST and ULST are effective for increasing ISq120 PF. However, it appears that BLST may be more effective at reducing SI scores in those with marked ILA. Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of feeding fava bean (Vicia faba L.) protein (FBP) on resting and post-exercise myofibrillar fractional synthetic rate (myoFSR). In a parallel, double-blind, randomised control trial, sixteen young, healthy recreationally active adults (age = 25 (5) years, body mass = 70 (15) kg, stature = 1.72 (0.11) m, mean (SD)) ingested 0.33 g·kg−1 FBP (n = 8) or a negative control (CON, i.e., EAA-free mixture) (n = 8), immediately after a bout of unilateral knee-extensor resistance exercise. Plasma, saliva, and m. vastus lateralis muscle samples were obtained pre-ingestion and 3 h post-ingestion. MyoFSR was calculated via deuterium labelling of myofibrillar-bound alanine, measured by gas chromatography–pyrolysis–isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-Pyr-IRMS). Resistance exercise increased myoFSR (p = 0.012). However, ingestion of FBP did not evoke an increase in resting (FBP 29 [−5, 63] vs. CON 12 [−25, 49]%, p = 0.409, mean % change [95% CI]) or post-exercise (FBP 78 [33, 123]% vs. CON 58 [9, 107]%, p = 0.732) myoFSR. Ingestion of 0.33 g·kg−1 of FBP does not appear to enhance resting or post-exercise myoFSR in young, healthy, recreationally active adults.

16. Boulder City 31ers: A Phenomenological Study of a Community-Based History Preservation Project

Abstract

This dissertation used a phenomenological approach in investigating the development of a grassroots community history-based educational outreach and chronicled its development from inception to incorporation into the mission of an established institution. The research questions focused on Deweyan principles of student-centered, experiential learning, the development of a collaborative partnership between school and community, and education's role in civic engagement and democracy. These ideas were explored through the perspectives of public policy and purpose, community interaction and identity, and pedagogical issues. An important characteristic found in successful community programs, no matter the cultural or socioeconomic status of the community, is that they should make use of community members talents and skills, reflect the values of that community in a meaningful way, come from the community itself, and also make an effort to offer positive improvement, growth, and change. The themes found during the observation of the program might serve as a useful template for other programs, including civic engagement (both organizational, macro level and individual, micro level), meaning (to learners, teachers, and volunteers), experience (experiential learning, experience of participants) hands-on learning, sharing of memories and experience, community relationships), and a sense of identity (in the passing down of memory, teaching of history, and with the individual learning activities of students) These themes provide the fundamentals for learning, and participating in individual and community life. The results of the study indicated that the 31ers Program reflected the education philosophy of John Dewey and theories related to constructivist, progressive education. Abstract

The recent development of variable renewable technologies in electric systems calls for prospective work regarding, among others, the future optimal capacity mix as well as its related carbon footprint, security of supply, and overall costs. In the context of diminishing and fickle residual electric demand, each generating technology's operational flexibility will partly determine whether they shall participate in future decarbonized electric systems, and nuclear technology is no exception. Hence, assessing the available nuclear flexibility is crucial to evaluating nuclear power's economic and technical interactions and the newly-built renewables capacities. This paper identifies the underlying physical mechanisms that frame this technology's flexibility and operations and focuses its analysis on nuclear planning optimization, a structural characteristic of nuclear fleets. We develop a method to simulate this optimization to reflect how plants managers maximize their plants' availability during peak-demand periods. We compare two simulation hypotheses, one where the fleet's planning is optimized and another where the fleet's availability is considered constant, a standard practice in the energy systems modeling literature. The paper conducts a sensitivity analysis highlighting the links between the fleet's planning optimization, the relative share of nuclear and renewables in the capacity mix, and the simulation models' results. We find that modeling the nuclear fleet's optimization is of greater importance as the relative share of nuclear in the capacity mix is high. The planning's importance holds as renewables' installed capacities heighten, as the residual demand level decreases with higher volatility. Ultimately, this paper aims to highlight the potential benefits of modeling the fleet's planning optimization in simplified low-carbon electric systems with a significant share of renewable energy.
