This article explores the excitation of different vibrational states in a spatially extended dynamical system through theory and experiment. As a prototypical example, we consider a one-dimensional packing of spherical particles (a so-called granular chain) that is subject to harmonic boundary excitation. The combination of the multi-modal nature of the system and the strong coupling between the particles due to the nonlinear Hertzian contact force leads to broad regions in frequency where different vibrational states are possible. In certain parametric regions, we demonstrate that the Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation predicts the corresponding modes fairly well. We propose that nonlinear multi-modal systems can be useful in vibration energy harvest- ing and discuss a prototypical framework for its realization. Directed-ratchet transport (DRT) in a one-dimensional lattice of spherical beads, which serves as a prototype for granular crystals, is investigated. We consider a system where the trajectory of the central bead is prescribed by a biharmonic forcing function with broken time-reversal symmetry. By comparing the mean integrated force of beads equidistant from the forcing bead, two distinct types of directed transport can be observed ---spatial and temporal DRT. Based on the value of the frequency of the forcing function relative to the cutoff frequency, the system can be categorized by the presence and magnitude of each type of DRT. Furthermore, we investigate and quantify how varying additional parameters such as the biharmonic weight affects DRT velocity and magnitude. Finally, friction is introduced into the system and is found to significantly inhibit spatial DRT. GRCop-42 (Cu-4 at.% Cr-2 at.% Nb) is a copper (Cu)-chromium (Cr)-niobium (Nb) alloy that NASA developed for use in rocket propulsion components that required high thermal conductivity, excellent creep resistance, low-cycle fatigue life, and strength at elevated temperatures, such as combustion chamber liners and fuel injector face plates. Using powder bed fusion (PBF) 3D printing, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) successfully printed near-fully-dense GRCop-42 components that may equal to or exceed their traditionally manufactured predecessors. This Technical Memorandum serves to summarize the process that was developed to achieve 3D printable near-fully-dense and functional GRCop-42.
