Abstract

Nowadays, with the increasing demand for travel, the number of people using motorbikes is increasing, especially in Vietnam. People tend to face more injury risks when they are in traffic, such as vulnerable road users (VRU) – pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess how car crashes influence Vietnamese motorcyclists' bodies, in particular their heads, because they are the most vulnerable parts of their bodies. The result of this study is to let people know what they're facing in case they are hit by a car. In addition, this research analyzes the injury to the motorcyclist's head when being hit by different configurations of the car. Due to the lack of facilities, car-to-motorcyclist frontal impact simulation has become the best way to resolve this problem. The impact conditions, which were obtained from real motorcyclist accidents in Vietnam, including the speed of vehicle and motorcycle, and impact angle, were defined as initial loading conditions in a simulation of the head striking the windscreen by using a finite element Vietnamese dummy model. Logistic regression models were developed to study brain injury risk with respect to injury-related variables: the head linear acceleration and head injury criterion (HIC) value. In this paper, the deformation of the motorbike structure model was neglected, so the material has been selected as a rigid form. 11. A Study on Small Vehicle Structure in Rear Under-Ride Impact by Using A CAE Based Methodology

Abstract

This study simulated and evaluated the safety of a small car structure in a collision with the rear of a truck. The parameters of bumpers currently used in Vietnam were employed to build a model of the rear truck bumper. The setting of simulation conditions was based on the NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash test. According to actual crash conditions, a collision simulation was performed with different vehicle speeds from 40 to 60 km/h, corresponding to the case of a passenger vehicle moving in a city colliding with a truck standing still. In addition, the percentage of rear-end collision was also taken into account, just like in real-world collisions, at 25%, 50%, and full rear impact. The simulation results were analyzed and evaluated according to the IIHS rating (Institute Insurance for Highway Safety). The results from different case studies showed that the rear bumper typically used on trucks is only safe for passenger cars in a collision at a low speed of 40 km/h and that in a collision at a higher speed will affect the passenger’s safe space and cause high injuries and casualties. Therefore, it is necessary to improve safety by optimizing the rear bumper design and the frontal structure of the small car chassis.

12. A Study On Optimal Design of Longitudinal Shape For Improving Small-Overlap Performance

Abstract

This paper presents a study on the optimal design of longitudinal shape for improving the small-overlap performance, based on a computer-based crash simulation model. The small-overlap frontal impact (SOFI) event was simulated using explicit finite element method. The models were developed for the simulation according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS real test conditions with the Flat 150 mm radius rigid barrier and 25% overlap. Several different cross sections of longitudinal members were subjected to dynamic compression load, which occurs in small overlap frontal impact. The different shapes of longitudinal structure were compared initially to obtain the cross section that fulfills the small overlap performance criteria. The evaluated performance parameters included the absorbed crash energy, crush force efficiency, ease of manufacture and cost. Once the cross section was selected, the design was further enhanced for better crashworthiness performances by investigating the effect of material characterization, increasing the wall thickness and by introducing a trigger mechanism. Abstract

Besides cyclist and pedestrian, motorcyclist also is vulnerable road users (VRU) because of lack of safety factors. Considering the traffic situation at present of developing countries which represent the number of motorbikes, the dangerous traffic accidents regarding motorcyclist always higher than others. Particularly, motorbike, which main vehicle in Vietnam, combine with the increase of the number of cars has created many problems about the crash between car and motorcyclist and the level of user's injury. Hence, the main aim of this study is that researching how car crashes influence Vietnamese human body in a traffic accidence, in particular, human head because it is the most important part in the whole body. Human Body Model is Dummy Hybrid III, but it is scaled down to average size of Vietnamese male named V-Dummy while the finite element car models used in this research are already published. Furthermore, motorbike finite element model is completely built in new. Then, V-Dummy is changed the posture from pedestrian to driver on motorbike to conduct the crash simulation model in different cases (velocity and impact angle) via LS-Dyna software. The results are taken out via LS- prepost and processed to predict easier the head injury of motorcyclist. Based on the databases, the dummy head was frequently hit by the car's windshield during the primary impact and the HIC show the acceleration of the head corresponds to the speed of impactor. At 0° of impact angle, the motorcyclist suffers higher HIC than 30o of impact angle. The velocity of motorbike does not cause a significant effect at low velocities from 20 km/h to 40 km/h while there is a considerable higher HIC at 50 km/h of car's velocity when motorcyclist go at 30 km/h of velocity instead of 0 km/h of velocity. Abstract

Wearing helmets while riding motorcycles is compulsory in Vietnam since 2007. The goal of this study is to build finite element models of two of the most common type of helmet to be worn by Vietnamese. Based-on observation, half helmet makes up the majority followed by open face helmet. The viability of the two helmet is studied using finite element method. The open face helmet and the half helmet was designed by the Solidwork CAD tool and modeled by LS- Prepost with different thickness of the impact absorbing liner. Among with the modified V-dummy, these helmets have been conducted drop test following the European helmet standard ECE R22.05 at four impact position. The result has pointed out that the helmet models created a significant decrease of multiple injury index comparing with non-helmet model. Nevertheless, even with a thicker liner, the half helmet failed more tests than the open face helmet due to ECE 22-05.
