4. Maximum information photoelectron metrology

Abstract

Photoelectron interferograms, manifested in photoelectron angular distributions (PADs), are a high-information, coherent observable. In order to obtain the maximum information from angle-resolved photoionization experiments it is desirable to record the full, 3D, photoelectron momentum distribution. Here we apply tomographic reconstruction techniques to obtain such 3D distributions from multiphoton ionization of potassium atoms, and fully analyse the energy and angular content of the 3D data. The PADs obtained as a function of energy indicate good agreement with previous 2D data and detailed analysis [Hockett et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 223001 (2014)] over the main spectral features, but also indicate unexpected symmetry-breaking in certain regions of momentum space, thus revealing additional continuum interferences which cannot otherwise be observed. These observations reflect the presence of additional ionization pathways and, most generally, illustrate the power of maximum information measurements of this coherent observable.

Abstract

The feasibility of complete photoionization experiments, in which the full set of photoionization matrix elements are determined, using multiphoton ionization schemes with polarization-shaped pulses has recently been demonstrated [Hockett et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 223001 (2014)]. Here we extend on our previous work to discuss further details of the numerics and analysis methodology utilised, and compare the results directly to new tomographic photoelectron measurements, which provide a more sensitive test of the validity of the results. In so doing we discuss in detail the physics of the photoionziation process, and suggest various avenues and prospects for this coherent multiplexing methodology.

Abstract

Microbubble (MB) contrast agents have positively impacted the clinical ultrasound (US) community worldwide. Their use in molecular US imaging applications has been hindered by their limited distribution to the vascular space. Acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) of nanoscale superheated perfluorocarbon nanodroplets (NDs) demonstrates potential as an extravascular contrast agent that could facilitate US-based molecular theranostic applications. However these agents are metastable and difficult to manufacture with high yields. Here, we report a new formulation technique that yields reliable, narrowly dispersed sub-300 nm decafluorobutane (DFB) or octafluoropropane (OFP)-filled phospholipid-coated NDs that are stable at body temperature, using small volume microfluidization. Final droplet concentration was high for DFB and lower for OFP (>1012vs. >1010 NDs per mL). Superheated ND stability was quantified using tunable resistive pulse sensing (TRPS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). DFB NDs were stable for at least 2 hours at body temperature (37 °C) without spontaneous vaporization. These NDs are activatable in vitro when exposed to diagnostic US pressures delivered by a clinical system to become visible microbubbles. The DFB NDs were suficiently stable to allow their processing into functionalized NDs with anti-epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) antibodies to target EpCAM positive cells.

29. Cancer-Related Stigma in Malawi: Narratives of Cancer Survivors

Abstract

PURPOSEStigma is an impediment across the cancer care continuum, leading to delayed presentation to care, elevated morbidity and mortality, and reduced quality of life. The goal of this study was to qualitatively examine the drivers, manifestations, and impacts of cancer-related stigma among individuals who received cancer treatment in Malawi, and to identify opportunities to address stigma.METHODSIndividuals who had completed treatment for lymphoma (n = 20) or breast cancer (n = 9) were recruited from observational cancer cohorts in Lilongwe, Malawi. Interviews explored the individual's cancer journey, from first symptoms through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Interviews were audio-recorded and translated from Chichewa to English. Data were coded for content related to stigma, and thematically analyzed to describe the drivers, manifestations, and impacts of stigma along the cancer journey.RESULTSDrivers of cancer stigma included beliefs of cancer origin (cancer as infectious; cancer as a marker of HIV; cancer due to bewitchment), perceived changes in the individual with cancer (loss of social/economic role; physical changes), and expectations about the individual's future (cancer as death sentence). Cancer stigma manifested through gossip, isolation, and courtesy stigma toward family members. The impacts of cancer stigma included mental health distress, impediments to care engagement, lack of cancer disclosure, and self-isolation. Participants suggested the following programmatic needs: community education about cancer; counseling in health facilities; and peer support from cancer survivors.CONCLUSIONThe results highlight multifactorial drivers, manifestations, and impacts of cancer-related stigma in Malawi, which may affect success of cancer screening and treatment programs. There is a clear need for multilevel interventions to improve community attitudes toward people with cancer, and to support individuals along the continuum of cancer care.

Abstract

A reciprocating probe with six pins was used for localized measurements in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) up to the shear layer (SL) and a few mm inside it. The probe was used to determine the poloidal velocity with three different methods which are critically compared to each other concerning their reliability. Furthermore, we have determined the position of the shear layer.

Item does not contain fulltext Dynamische Prozesse zwischen langjährig verheirateten Eheleuten des mittleren bis höheren Erwachsenenalters wurden anhand der Daten aus einer Längsschnitterhebung über 25 Jahre untersucht. Die multivariate Analyse wurde mittels Strukturgleichungsmodellen durchgeführt. Einerseits wurde an einer Teilstichprobe von 215 Paaren über 14 Jahre ein bedingtes lineares Trajektorienmodell untersucht. Der Verlauf der Ehezufriedenheit war vom Altersunterschied im Paar und dem Neurotizismus der Partner, vor allem aber vom gegenseitigen Änderungswunsch und der gegenseitigen Unterstützung sowie den Änderungen in diesen Bereichen abhängig. An Teilstichproben zwischen 222 und 247 Paaren über zwölf Jahre wurden andererseits auch Beziehungen zwischen Ehezufriedenheit und Kohäsion herausgearbeitet. Dazu wurden zeitkontinuierliche Zwei-Variablen-Modelle mit der Zufriedenheit beider Partner, der Kohäsion beider Partner sowie der Zufriedenheit eines Partners und der Kohäsion des anderen Partners verwendet sowie auch ein Vier-Variablen-Modell mit der Zufriedenheit und der Kohäsion von beiden, also von Partner und Partnerin. Sowohl Zufriedenheit als auch Kohäsion waren für beide Geschlechter sehr stabil. Gleichwohl ergaben sich für die beiden Geschlechter teilweise auch unterschiedliche dynamische Zusammenhänge von Zufriedenheit und Kohäsion. Die Ergebnisse werden mit Bezug auf die Bedeutung für die Partnerschaftsforschung und die Analysestrategien diskutiert. 26 p.
