Van der Waals forces are individually weak, but on scale can drive many nano- and macroscopic processes. Here, Kawai et al. directly measure the van der Waals interactions between noble gas atom pairs and show how this changes with atom size and surface adsorption.

We report the modular synthesis of three different types of neutral κ2-P,N-ligands comprising an imine and a phosphine binding site. These ligands were reacted with rhodium, iridium and palladium metal precursors and the structures of the resulting complexes were elucidated by means of X-ray crystallography. We observed that subtle changes of the ligand backbone have a significant influence on the binding geometry und coordination properties of these bidentate P,N-donors.

Abstract Background Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in north temperate regions worldwide, affecting an estimated 300,000 people annually in the United States alone. The incidence of LB is correlated with human exposure to its vector, the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis). To date, attempts to model tick encounter risk based on environmental parameters have been equivocal. Previous studies have not considered (1) the differences between relative humidity (RH) in leaf litter and at weather stations, (2) the RH threshold that affects nymphal blacklegged tick survival, and (3) the time required below the threshold to induce mortality. We clarify the association between environmental moisture and tick survival by presenting a significant relationship between the total number of tick adverse moisture events (TAMEs - calculated as microclimatic periods below a RH threshold) and tick abundance each year. Methods We used a 14-year continuous statewide tick surveillance database and corresponding weather data from Rhode Island (RI), USA, to assess the effects of TAMEs on nymphal populations of I. scapularis. These TAMEs were defined as extended periods of time (>8 h below 82% RH in leaf litter). We fit a sigmoid curve comparing weather station data to those collected by loggers placed in tick habitats to estimate RH experienced by nymphal ticks, and compiled the number of historical TAMEs during the 14-year record. Results The total number of TAMEs in June of each year was negatively related to total seasonal nymphal tick densities, suggesting that sub-threshold humidity episodes >8 h in duration naturally lowered nymphal blacklegged tick abundance. Furthermore, TAMEs were positively related to the ratio of tick abundance early in the season when compared to late season, suggesting that lower than average tick abundance for a given year resulted from tick mortality and not from other factors. Conclusions Our results clarify the mechanism by which environmental moisture affects blacklegged tick populations, and offers the possibility to more accurately predict tick abundance and human LB incidence. We describe a method to forecast LB risk in endemic regions and identify the predictive role of microclimatic moisture conditions on tick encounter risk.

Determining the scattering potential landscape for two-dimensional superlattices provides key insight into fundamental quantum electron phenomena. Theoretical and semiempirical methods have been extensively used to simulate confinement effects of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) on superlattices with a single scatterer in the form of vicinal surfaces and dislocation networks or isolated structures such as quantum corrals and vacancy islands. However, the complexity of the problem increases when the building blocks (or scatterers) are heterogeneous, as in metal-organic nanoporous networks (MONNs), since additional potentials may come into play. Therefore, the parametrization of the surface potential landscape is often inaccurate, leading to incorrect scattering potentials. Here, we address this issue with a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements together with electron plane-wave expansion simulations on a MONN grown on Cu(111). This experimental-theory approach, enables us to capture the 2DEG response to the intricate scattering potential landscape, and reveals systematic modeling procedures. Starting from a realistic geometry of the system, we determine the repulsive scattering potentials for both molecules and coordinated metal adatoms, the latter contradicting the established simulation framework. Moreover, we reveal local asymmetries and subtle renormalization effects of the 2DEG that relate to the interaction of the MONN and the underlying substrate.

The fluorescence microscope is routinely used to study cellular structure in many biomedical research laboratories and is increasingly used as a quantitative assay system for cellular dynamics. One of the major causes of image degradation in the fluorescence microscope is blurring. Deconvolution algorithms use a model of the microscope imaging process to either subtract or reassign out-of-focus blur. A variety of algorithms are now commercially available, each with its own characteristic advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we review the imaging process in the fluorescence microscope and then discuss how the various deconvolution methods work. Finally, we provide a summary of practical tips for using deconvolution and discuss imaging artifacts and how to minimize them.

Molecules based on the octaazaperopyrenedioxide (OAPPDO) motif represent a new class of organic emitters with the ability to form amorphous films when processed from solution while retaining their emissive properties. Here, we report the synthesis of bay-functionalized OAPPDO derivatives with thioether-substituents, which are structurally characterized by their twisted π-core. The combination of this structural motif with suitable substituents at the chromophore facilitates the deposition of neat and smooth films from solution, in which the molecules remain electronically decoupled, thus drastically reducing non-radiative decay pathways. An analysis of absorption and emission spectra of solutions and spincoated thin films is provided along with details of their structural morphology and thermodynamics. The amorphous thin films display spectroscopic characteristics similar to those of the isolated molecules in solution and exhibit photoluminescence quantum yields up to 17%. The high oscillator strength of smooth films of these OAPPDO derivatives enables their integration in Fabry–Pérot microcavities with high quality factors and the observation of strong light-matter coupling with clear exciton–polariton modes and large coupling strength.
