This article discusses the author's visit to the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, California in 1976. The depot was a military ammunition facility that used Fairbanks-Morse H12-44s as motive power for switching trains. The author had previously traveled to see Southern Pacific's fleet of H12-44s and was excited to see the ones at Sierra. Although the expected inbound train was delayed, the author was able to see and photograph the parked FMs. The Sierra Army Depot's primary mission has changed since 1976, and the FMs have been replaced by rebuilt EMD GP9s. The author's host, Capt. Larry Kolar, retired from the military and became a teacher before passing away in 2012. The Sierra Army Depot is still an active military facility today. The Trona Railway is a small railroad that operates in the remote California desert. It runs 30 miles between the town of Trona and an interchange with Union Pacific. The railway transports trona, a mineral used to produce soda ash, which is an important ingredient in various products. The author describes their experience riding in the cab of a Baldwin diesel locomotive on the Trona Railway, noting the unique landscape and the rough ride. The article includes photographs of the railway and its equipment. [Extracted from the article]

The article also mentions the historical significance of Needles as a former stop on Route 66 and its connection to the film industry. It discusses the challenges faced by train crews on this route, such as the uphill slog and the use of distributed power. The article concludes by mentioning the locomotive models commonly seen on this line and the schedule of the Amtrak Southwest Chief. This article provides valuable information for train enthusiasts interested in the desert railroading experience. [Extracted from the article]

Part of the timidity of some railroads in the late '50s and early '60s was, besides lingering competition from Alco, EMD had a newcomer to the U.S. Class I mainline railroad market nipping at its heels; the just-introduced 2,500 hp General Electric U25B. Features The 1960s saw a three-way race for diesel locomotive sales among Alco, Electro-Motive, and newcomer General Electric. Alco and EMD offered the C424/C425 and GP30, respectively, while GE made its entry to the North American mainline diesel locomotive market with the U25B. [Extracted from the article]
In railroading, it's an Alco showing up on an otherwise all-EMD locomotive roster, or perhaps a slight variation of a paint scheme that catches our eye. Two went straight to work in the locomotive builder's plants. It would later wear EMD's standard white, black, and red when working as the La Grange plant switcher. [Extracted from the article]
