Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis (THE) is an acute disease caused by a Siadenovirus that affects 4 week-aged and older turkeys, characterized by acute depression, bloody droppings, and a high mortality rate. The immunosuppressive attributes of THE can protract disease progression and create a predisposition in birds towards subsequent bacterial infectiodoralns involving Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens (necrotic enteritis). Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis Virus (THEV) predominantly affects turkeys and carries substantial economic implications for this industry. Macrophages and B lymphocytes are recognized as the predominant target cells for the virus, while the spleen is the principal site of viral replication. Infected cells have also been observed in various other tissues, including the intestines, bursa of Fabricius, cecal tonsils, thymus, liver, kidney, peripheral blood leukocytes, and lungs. The economic relevance of this disease is derived both from the high mortality rate, which can reach 60% depending on the virulence of the strain, and from subclinical disease responsible for poor performance in vaccinated animals. Simple Summary: Simple Summary: The infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is a major pathogen in the poultry industry due to its profound impact on the immune systems of young chickens. Various genetic types with distinct biological characteristics have been described. In this study, we evaluated the expression of different cytokines in the bursa of Fabricius and thymus over a 28-day experimental infection with two strains from the G1a (Classical) and G6 (ITA) genogroups. The G6 strain appeared to induce a more immediate immunosuppression, and unlike the G1a strain, did not show signs of gene expression recovery by the end of the study. This finding aligns with the higher replication level previously reported for the G6 and with the clinical outcome, as this genotype, although subclinical, has often been considered more immunosuppressive. Unlike other studies that focused on shorter periods post-infection, the patterns observed in this study were highly variable and complex, depending on the strain, tissue, and time point. Therefore, this study not only confirms the effect of strain/genogroup on immune system modulation but also highlights the importance of extended monitoring post-infection to better understand the intricate patterns and interactions with the host response. Simple Summary: Avian influenza viruses are highly contagious respiratory viruses that severely impact bird populations, causing significant morbidity, mortality, and economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. Particularly concerning are the Asian-origin H5 subtype highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses of clade 2.3.4.4b, which emerged in 2013 and have since spread across Asia, Europe, Africa, and America, leading to outbreaks in various poultry and animal species. The unique epidemiological and pathobiological characteristics specific to clade 2.3.4.4b viruses are discussed, emphasizing their distinct nature compared to other clades. Wild waterfowl, acting as reservoirs, frequently carry these viruses, posing threats not only to their populations but also to other wild bird species, including endangered ones. Furthermore, an increasing number of clade 2.3.4.4b virus infections in wild or domestic mammalian species raises significant concerns about potential spillover events to humans. This review highlights the diverse outcomes of HPAI infections in different hosts, ranging from asymptomatic cases to fatal infection, influenced by host and virus-related factors. Understanding these complexities is vital for developing effective strategies to mitigate the impact of AIVs, safeguard poultry production, protect wildlife, and prevent potential public health crises. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are highly contagious respiratory viruses of birds, leading to significant morbidity and mortality globally and causing substantial economic losses to the poultry industry and agriculture. Since their first isolation in 2013–2014, the Asian-origin H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAI) of clade 2.3.4.4b have undergone unprecedented evolution and reassortment of internal gene segments. In just a few years, it supplanted other AIV clades, and now it is widespread in the wild migratory waterfowl, spreading to Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Wild waterfowl, the natural reservoir of LPAIVs and generally more resistant to the disease, also manifested high morbidity and mortality with HPAIV clade 2.3.4.4b. This clade also caused overt clinical signs and mass mortality in a variety of avian and mammalian species never reported before, such as raptors, seabirds, sealions, foxes, and others. Most notably, the recent outbreaks in dairy cattle were associated with the emergence of a few critical mutations related to mammalian adaptation, raising concerns about the possibility of jumping species and acquisition of sustained human-to-human transmission. Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is a ubiquitous immunosuppressive pathogen which is a severe burden to the poultry industry. Due to frequent mutation and reassortment events, its double-stranded, bi-segmented RNA genome displays a considerable heterogeneity, which in turn produces profound differences in antigenicity and pathogenicity. In recent years, the investigation of IBDV epidemiology has greatly benefited from the proposal of multiple phylogenetic classification systems which prompted the execution of molecular surveys all over the world, producing a wealth of standardized and easily sharable data. The present epidemiological survey was conducted in six Near East and Persian Gulf countries to characterize the field IBDVs circulating in the region. Ninety-three broiler flocks, immunized with different vaccination protocols, were investigated over a one-year period by collecting eight individual bursal samples at a time. Using molecular assays targeting both genome segments, field IBDVs belonging to four genotypes were detected from 42 flocks across all investigated countries. While traditional very virulent IBDVs (genotype A3B2) represented a minority, multiple atypical IBDV genotypes (A3B1, A4B1 and A6B1) were found to circulate in most of the region. Many of the detected strains were related to sequences from other continents, supporting the involvement of the Near and Middle East in complex networks of viral spreading. The obtained results, combined with the available literature, allowed us to update the epidemiological picture, hopefully favouring the identification of epidemiological threats and the planning of effective monitoring and control strategies. Different field IBDVs were found to circulate in the Near and Middle East. Multiple atypical genotypes (A3B1, A4B1, A6B1) were found to circulate extensively. In this study, the antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial strains obtained from wild avian species recovered in wetlands of Northern Italy were described. Cloacal swabs collected from 67 aquatic birds, hunted or found dead in two private hunting grounds, were submitted to microbiological investigations and antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the Vitek 2 system, while specific PCR protocols were applied to screen for genes associated with the resistance. One hundred fifty-seven bacterial strains were characterized. The most frequent isolates were Enterococcus faecalis (36/157; 22.9%) and Escherichia coli (23/157; 14.6%). Seventy-seven isolates (77/157; 49%) were resulted resistant to at least one antibiotic, and eight isolates (8/157; 5%) were classified as multidrug resistant bacteria. Resistance for critically important antibiotics (linezolid, vancomycin, carbapenems, third-generation cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones) was also described. Salmonella spp. was obtained from a Eurasian teal (Anas crecca), and it was subsequently analyzed by whole genome sequencing, revealing the serovar Salmonella Braenderup ST22. The phylogenetic analysis, performed with all ST22 described in 2021 and 2022, placed the strain under study in a large clade associated with human salmonellosis cases. These results suggest that migratory aquatic birds may be considered as relevant carriers of critically important antibiotic resistant bacteria and zoonotic food-borne pathogens potentially able to impact public health. The survey confirmed the circulation of field aMPV subtype B strains with a certain degree of genetic heterogenicity and the importance of implementation of vaccination to contain the clinical manifestations. In recent years, the impact of respiratory disease resulting from Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) infection has been generally rising in the broiler industry in Europe. In this context, in order to investigate aMPV contribution to the clinical picture and the potential benefits of diversified vaccination strategies compared to nonvaccination policies, a longitudinal monitoring was performed, also evaluating Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) presence. Broiler flocks located in Western France, where aMPV has already proven to be a health and productivity issue, were screened by RT-PCR on rhino-pharyngeal swabs, and the viruses were genetically characterized by sequence analysis. For a more comprehensive picture of aMPV molecular epidemiology and evolution in France, aMPV subtype B strains detected from 1985 to 1998 were sequenced and included in the analysis. The survey confirmed the detection of aMPV subtype B in commercial broiler flocks in France, together with a certain heterogeneity demonstrated by the circulation of more recent and historical French field strains. No IBV field strains were detected. The implementation and evaluation of different management choices and vaccine strategies suggests once again that immunization does not prevent infection but contributes greatly to the containment of the clinical manifestations. Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is an economically important pathogen for poultry, whereas knowledge of its occurrence in non‐poultry hosts is limited. The objective of this systematic review and meta‐analysis is to summarize the up‐to‐date knowledge about the sero‐viroprevalence of IBDV in wild birds on a global scale. A computerized literature research was performed on PubMed, Scopus, CAB Direct and Web of Science to find relevant publications, along with the screening of reference lists. Journal articles, book chapters, scientific correspondences, conference proceedings and short communications on IBDV virological and/or serological surveys in free‐living wild birds published between 1970 and 2021 were considered as eligible. Among 184 studies found, 36 original contributions met the pre‐established criteria. A random‐effect model was applied to calculate pooled seroprevalence estimates with 95% confidence intervals, whereas the paucity of virological studies (n = 6) only allowed a qualitative description of the data. The pooled seroprevalence was estimated to be 6% (95% CI: 3%–9%) and a high heterogeneity was detected (I2 = 96%). Sub‐group analyses were not performed due to the scarcity of available information about hypothetical moderators. With respect to virological studies, IBDV was detected in Anseriformes, Columbiformes, Galliformes, Passeriformes and Pelecaniformes and different strains related to poultry infection were isolated. Our estimates of serological data showed a moderate exposure of wild birds to IBDV. The susceptibility of different species to IBDV infection underlines their potential role in its epidemiology at least as carriers or spreaders. Indeed, the isolation of IBDV in healthy wild birds with a migratory attitude might contribute to a long‐distance spread of the virus and to strain diversity. While a wild reservoir host could not be clearly identified, we believe our work provides useful insights for conducting future surveys which are needed to broaden our knowledge of IBDV occurrence in wild birds.
