1. Minutes-scale Schr{\'o}dinger-cat state of spin-5/2 atoms

Abstract

Quantum metrology with nonclassical states offers a promising route to improved precision in physical measurements. The quantum effects of Schr{\"o}dinger-cat superpositions or entanglements allow measurement uncertainties to reach below the standard quantum limit. However, the challenge in keeping a long coherence time for such nonclassical states often prevents full exploitation of the quantum advantage in metrology. Here we demonstrate a long-lived Schr{\"o}dinger-cat state of optically trapped $^{173}$Yb (\textit{I}\ =\ 5/2) atoms. The cat state, a superposition of two oppositely-directed and furthest-apart spin states, is generated by a non-linear spin rotation. Protected in a decoherence-free subspace against inhomogeneous light shifts of an optical lattice, the cat state achieves a coherence time of $1.4(1)\times 10^3$ s. A magnetic field is measured with Ramsey interferometry, demonstrating a scheme of Heisenberg-limited metrology for atomic magnetometry, quantum information processing, and searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract

The selective leaching of Mo from an off-grade gravity lead concentrate was investigated in Na2CO3 solution using air as an oxidant. The leaching behaviors of Mo and Pb were predicted by the thermodynamic phase diagrams of Pb-Mo-C-H2O system. The oxidation mechanisms of those sulfides in the off-grade gravity lead concentrate were confirmed by the methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The influence of operating factors on the leaching behaviors of Mo and Pb, including Na2CO3 concentration, liquid-to-solid ratio, temperature, and leaching time, were studied. Under these optimum leaching conditions (Na2CO3 2 M, leaching time 8 h, temperature 75°C, air-flow rate 2.0 m3/h and L/S ratio of 10/1 mL/g), the extraction of Mo and Pb was up to 97.70 and 0.73 %, respectively.

Abstract

We introduce the notion of the separated pair of closed submodules in the setting of Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We demonstrate that even in the case of Hilbert spaces this concept has several nice characterizations enriching the theory of separated pairs of subspaces in Hilbert spaces. Let $\mathscr H$ and $\mathscr K$ be orthogonally complemented closed submodules of a Hilbert $C^*$-module $\mathscr E$. We establish that $ (\mathscr H,\mathscr K)$ is a separated pair in $\mathscr{E}$ if and only if there are idempotents $\Pi_1$ and $\Pi_2$ such that $\Pi_1\Pi_2=\Pi_2\Pi_1=0$ and $\mathscr R(\Pi_1)=\mathscr H$ and $\mathscr R(\Pi_2)=\mathscr K$. We show that $\mathscr R(\Pi_1+\lambda\Pi_2)$ is closed for each $\lambda\in \mathbb{C}$ if and only if $\mathscr R(\Pi_1+\Pi_2)$ is closed. We use the localization of Hilbert $C^*$-modules to define the angle between closed submodules. We prove that if $(\mathscr H^\perp,\mathscr K^\perp)$ is concordant, then $(\mathscr H^{\perp\perp},\mathscr K^{\perp\perp})$ is a separated pair if the cosine of this angle is less than one. Abstract

Quantum fluctuations (QFs) caused by zero-point phonon vibrations (ZPPVs) are known to prevent the occurrence of polar phases in bulk incipient ferroelectrics down to 0K1-3. On the other hand, little is known about the effects of QFs on the recently discovered topological patterns in ferroelectric nanostructures4-9. Here, by using an atomistic effective Hamiltonian within classical Monte Carlo (CMC) and path integral quantum Monte Carlo (PI-QMC)1,3,10,11, we unveil how QFs affect the topology of several dipolar phases in ultrathin Pb(Zr0.4Ti0.6)O3 (PZT) films. In particular, our PI-QMC simulations show that the ZPPVs do not suppress polar patterns but rather stabilize the labyrinth4, bimeron5 and bubble phases12,13 within a wider range of bias field magnitudes. Moreover, we reveal that quantum fluctuations induce a quantum critical point (QCP) separating a hexagonal bubble lattice from a liquid-like state characterized by spontaneous motion, creation and annihilation of polar bubbles at cryogenic temperatures. Abstract

We unveil a new non-basal slip mechanism in the {\mu}-phase at room temperature using nanomechanical testing, transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulation. The (1-105) planar faults with a displacement vector of 0.07[-5502] can be formed by dislocation glide. They do not disrupt the Frank-Kasper packing and therefore enable the accommodation of plastic strain at low temperatures without requiring atomic diffusion. The intersections between the (1-105) planar faults and basal slip result in stress concentration and crack nucleation during loading.

While much research has focused on the negative impacts of such trauma, less attention has been given to vicarious post-traumatic growth (VPTG). Given the high levels of indirect trauma that nurses face, understanding VPTG is crucial for mitigating its adverse effects and enhancing mental health and work efficiency.Objective: To map and synthesize the literature on vicarious post-traumatic growth and identify key knowledge gaps in vicarious post-traumatic growth research.Methods: This scoping review follows the approach proposed by Arksey and O’Malley. We conducted this scoping review using the methodology recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute, supported by the PAGER framework. We searched 7 databases and gray literature on May 19, 2023 to obtain relevant research.Results: Finally, we included 29 studies from 9 countries. There are currently no reliable data on the incidence of vicarious post-traumatic growth among nurses worldwide. There are multiple instruments available to investigate vicarious post-traumatic growth in nurses, and the vicarious post-traumatic growth inventory is more recommended. Factors affecting nurses’ vicarious post-traumatic growth include coping styles, psychological factors, and social support. Indirect trauma exposure and vicarious post-traumatic growth coexist. There are currently three intervention strategies for vicarious post-traumatic growth, but none have been proven in clinical trials.Conclusion: This is the first scoping review on vicarious post-traumatic growth, there are a lot of research deficiencies and gaps in current research on vicarious post-traumatic growth for nurses. 9. Nonlinear phonon Hall effects in ferroelectrics: its existence and non-volatile electrical control

Abstract

Nonlinear Hall effects have been previously investigated in non-centrosymmetric systems for electronic systems. However, they only exist in metallic systems and are not compatible with ferroelectrics since these latter are insulators, hence limiting their applications. On the other hand, ferroelectrics naturally break inversion symmetry and can induce a non-zero Berry curvature. Here, we show that a non-volatile electric-field control of heat current can be realized in ferroelectrics through the nonlinear phonon Hall effects. More precisely, based on Boltzmann equation under the relaxation-time approximation, we derive the equation for nonlinear phonon Hall effects, and further show that the behaviors of nonlinear phonon (Boson) Hall effects are very different from nonlinear Hall effects for electrons (Fermion). Our work provides a route for electric-field control of thermal Hall current in ferroelectrics., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The BESIII Collaboration claimed that a new $a_{0}(1817)$ resonance was found in the recent results of the $D_{s}^{+} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0}K^{+}\pi^{0}$ decay. For this decay process, we perform a unitary amplitude to analyze the contributions of the states $a_{0}(980)^{+}$ and $a_{0}(1710)^{+}$ with the final state interactions. Considering the Cabibbo-favored external and internal $W$-emission mechanisms at the quark level, and the contributions of the resonances $a_{0}(980)^{+}$, $a_{0}(1710)^{+}$ in the $S$-wave and $\bar{K}^{*}(892)^{0}$, ${K}^{*}(892)^{+}$ in the $P$-wave, the recent experimental data of the $K_{S}^{0}K^{+}$ invariant mass spectrum from the BESIII Collaboration can be described well. In our results, the states $a_{0}(980)$ and $a_{0}(1710)$ are dynamically generated from the final state interactions of $K\bar{K}$ and $K^{*}\bar{K}^{*}$, respectively, which support the molecular nature for them. Moreover, some obtained branching fractions are in agreement with the experimental measurements.

Abstract

Mg-based alloys are industrially used for structural applications, both as solid solutions alloys and as composites containing intermetallic compounds. However, a further development in terms of mechanical properties requires the investigation of underlying causalities between synthesis, processing and microstructure to adjust the mechanical and the corrosion properties, ideally down to the near atomic scale. Such fundamental scientific investigations with high resolution characterisation techniques require model materials of exceptionally high purity and strictly controlled microstructure e.g. with respect to grain size, morphology, chemical homogeneity as well as content and size of oxide inclusions. In this context, the Mg-Al-Ca system appears exceptionally challenging from a metallurgical perspective due to the high reactivity and high vapor pressures, so that conventional industrial techniques cannot be successfully deployed. Here, we demonstrate the applicability of various scientific synthesis methods from arc melting over solution growth to diffusion couples, extending to effects and parameters for thermo-mechanical processing. Suitable pathways to overcome the specific challenges of the Mg-Al-Ca system are demonstrated, as well as the persistent limitations of the current state of the art laboratory metallurgy technology., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

12. Plasticity of the Nb-rich {\mu}-Co7Nb6 phase at room temperature and 600 {\deg}C

Abstract

The {\mu}-phase is a common precipitation phase in superalloys and it exists in a wide composition and temperature range. As such, we study the influences of composition and temperature on its plasticity by micropillar compression tests and transmission electron microscopy. The micropillars of the {\mu}-Co7Nb6 phase deform plastically by basal slip at either room temperature or 600 oC. At room temperature, the Co-49Nb and Co-52Nb micropillars show high yield stresses and an abrupt large strain burst at the onset of yielding regardless of orientation, whereas the Co-54Nb micropillars oriented for basal slip yield at much lower stresses and show intermittent small strain bursts during plastic deformation. While the Co-49Nb micropillars deform by full dislocation slip on the basal plane at room temperature, the Co-54Nb micropillars deform by partial dislocation slip on the basal plane. At 600 oC, the Co-49Nb micropillars oriented for basal slip show stable and continuous plasticity and their critical resolved shear stress decreases dramatically. The plastic deformation of the Co-49Nb micropillars occurs via partial dislocation slip on the basal plane at 600 oC. Based on the geometric {\gamma}-surfaces for all potential basal slip planes, we explore where and why the glide of full and partial dislocations on the basal plane occurs in the {\mu}-Co7Nb6 phase.

Abstract

To decrease the temperature coefficients of sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets, the influencing factors on temperature coefficients, especially the reversible temperature coefficient β of intrinsic coercivity Hcj, were analyzed. The results showed that the absolute value of β decreased with increasing Hcj and also the ratio of microstructure parameter c to Neff, indicating that the increase of magnetocrystalline anisotropy field HA and c/Neff can effectively decrease the absolute value of β. On the basis of this analysis, a sintered Nd-Fe-B magnet with a low temperature coefficient of Hcj was fabricated through composition design, and the value of β was only -0.385%/ºC in the temperature interval of 20-150ºC.

Data on SICH, NIHSS, and mRS were analyzed. A good prognosis was defined as a mRS ≤ 2 or recovery to pre-stroke status at 90 days.Results: Of 209 patients, 80 received non-RT, 100 received IVT and 29 underwent MT. The non-RT group had the lowest baseline NIHSS while the MT group had the highest (non-RT 6.0 vs IVT 12.0 vs MT 18.0, P < 0.001). Higher NIHSS was associated with increased SICH risk (OR 1.083, P=0.032), while RT was not (OR 5.194, P=0.129). The overall SICH rate in the RT group was higher but not significantly different after stratification by stroke severity. Poor prognosis was associated with higher admission NIHSS, stroke due to large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) combined with cardioembolism (CE), and stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) (OR 0.902, P< 0.001; OR 0.297, P=0.029; OR 0.103, P< 0.001, respectively). The RT group showed a greater reduction in NIHSS (delta NIHSS) than the non-RT group (non-RT 2.0 vs IVT 4.0 vs MT 6.0, P< 0.005). For severe AIS, the IVT group had a better prognosis at 90 days (non-RT 0% vs IVT 38.2%, P=0.039). No 90-day mortality difference was found between groups after stratification.Conclusion: Stroke severity, rather than RT, is an independent risk factor for SICH in AIS patients over 80. RT in severe stroke patients improves NIHSS at 90 days, suggesting RT is safe and effective in this demographic. This study evaluates the diagnostic value of mNGS in Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) and compares its efficacy with traditional detection methods, including Grocott’s Methenamine Silver (GMS) staining, serum (1– 3)-β-D-Glucan (BDG) testing, and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) testing.Methods: Seventy-eight patients hospitalized between January 2022 and March 2023 with suspected pulmonary infections were included. Patients were eligible for mNGS if they exhibited symptoms such as fever, cough, dyspnea, or progressive hypoxemia, and met specific clinical criteria for PJP. Specimens obtained included bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, sputum, and peripheral blood. Positive rates and pathogen distributions detected by mNGS and traditional methods were compared.Results: In the PJP group, 25%, 37.5%, and 9.38% of patients had solid organ tumors, corticosteroid use, and skin diseases, respectively, significantly higher than in the non-PJP group. The sensitivity and specificity of mNGS were both 100%, significantly higher than those of serum BDG (sensitivity 50%, specificity 81.8%) and LDH (sensitivity 9.3%, specificity 91.3%). Significant differences in microbial composition between the PJP and Non-PJP groups were observed. mNGS detected multiple mixed pathogens in 96.88% of PJP cases, with 68.75% exhibiting mixed bacterial and viral infections. Abstract

Using a non-relativistic potential model, we obtain the mass spectra, leptonic decay constants, and parameters of the Isgur-Wise function for the beauty and charm mesons. With the calculated quantities, we investigate purely leptonic decays of $B^+$, $B^{*}$, $B_c^+$, semileptonic decay modes ${B_{(s)}} \to {D_{(s)}}l\nu $ and ${B_c} \to {\eta _c}\ell \bar \nu $ for three lepton channels $e,\mu ,\tau$, and obtain the corresponding branching fractions. $\bar B_{(s)}^{} \to D_{(s)}^*l\bar \nu $ transitions are also studied. Next, we apply the form factors for spin zero and spin one transitions of $B_c$ to calculate the nonleptonic branching ratios of ${B_c} \to J/\psi ({\eta _c}) + P(V)$, where $P$ and $V$ stand for the $D_q^{* - }$ vector meson and the $D_q$ pseudoscalar meson, respectively. Abstract

The astrophysical p-process is an important way of nucleosynthesis to produce the stable and proton-rich nuclei beyond Fe which can not be reached by the s- and r-processes. In the present study, the impact of nuclear ingredients, especially the nuclear potential, level density and strength function, to the astrophysical re-action rates of (p,γ), (α,γ), (γ,p), and (γ,α) reactions are systematically studied. The calculations are performed basad on the modern reaction code TALYS for about 3000 stable and proton-rich nuclei with 12≤Z≤110. In particular, both of the Wood-Saxon potential and the microscopic folding potential are taken into account. It is found that both the capture and photonuclear reaction rates are very sensitive to the nuclear potential, thus the better determination of nuclear potential would be important to reduce the uncertainties of reaction rates. Meanwhile, the Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) facility is being developed, which will provide the great opportunity to experimentally study the photonuclear reactions in p-process. Simulations of the experimental setup for the measurements of the photonuclear reactions 96Ru(γ,p) and 96Ru(γ,α) are performed. It is shown that the experiments of photonuclear reactions in p-process based on ELI-NP are quite promising.

A total of 375 PC tissues and paired adjacent nontumor tissues were employed for the construction of 4 tissue microarrays (TMAs). The quality of the 4 TMAs was examined by HE staining. We performed immunohistochemistry analysis to evaluate hENT1 expression in the TMAs. Moreover, we detected hENT1 expression level and proved the role of hENT1 in cell proliferation, drug resistance, migration and invasion in vivo and vitro.Results: The results indicated that low hENT1 expression indicated a significantly poor outcome in PC patients, including shortened DFS (21.6± 2.8 months versus 36.9± 4.0 months, p< 0.001) and OS (33.6± 3.9 versus 39.6± 3.9, p=0.004). Meanwhile, patients in stage I/II of TNM stage had a longer OS (40.2± 3.4 versus 15.4± 1.7, p=0.002) and DFS (31.0± 3.1 versus 12.4± 1.9, p=0.016) than patients in stage III/IV. Patients in M0 stage had a longer OS (39.7± 3.4 versus 16.2± 1.9, p=0.026) and DFS(30.7± 3.0 versus 11.8± 2.2, p=0.031) than patients in M1 stage, and patients with tumors not invading the capsule had a better DFS than those with tumor invasion into the capsule (30.8± 3.0 versus 12.6± 2.3, p=0.053). Patients with preoperative CA19-9 values ≤ 467 U/mL have longer DFS than that of patients who had preoperative CA19-9 values > 467 U/mL (37.9± 4.1 versus 22.9± 4.0, p=0.04). In the subgroup analysis, a high hENT1 expression level was related to a longer OS(39.4± 4.0 versus 31.5± 3.9, p=0.001) and DFS(35.7± 4.0 versus 20.6± 2.7; p< 0.0001) in the Gemcitabine subgroup.Conclusion: PC patients with high hENT1 expression have a better survival outcomes when receiving Gemcitabine. hENT1 expression can be a great prognostic indicator for PC patients to receive Gemcitabine treatment.Keywords: pancreatic cancer, human equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1, hENT1, gemcitabine chemoresistance, prognostic indicator, survival improvement

22. Feasibility of studying astrophysically important charged-particle emission with the variable energy $\gamma$-ray system at the Extreme Light Infrastructure -- Nuclear Physics facility

Abstract

In the environment of a hot plasma, as achieved in stellar explosions, capture and photodisintegration reactions proceeding on excited states in the nucleus can considerably contribute to the astrophysical reaction rate. Such reaction rates including the excited-state contribution are obtained from theoretical calculations as the direct experimental determination of these astrophysical rates is currently unfeasible. In the present study, ($\gamma$,p) and ($\gamma$,$\alpha$) reactions in the mass and energy range relevant to the astrophysical $p$ process are considered and the feasibility of measuring them with the ELISSA detector system at the future Variable Energy $\gamma$-ray (VEGA) facility at ELI-NP is investigated. The simulation results reveal that, for the ($\gamma$,p) reaction on twelve targets of $^{29}$Si, $^{56}$Fe, $^{74}$Se, $^{84}$Sr, $^{91}$Zr, $^{96,98}$Ru, $^{102}$Pd, $^{106}$Cd, and $^{115, 117, 119}$Sn, and the ($\gamma$,$\alpha$) reaction on five targets of $^{50}$V, $^{87}$Sr, $^{123,125}$Te, and $^{149}$Sm, the yields of the reaction channels with the transitions to the excited states in the residual nucleus are relevant and even dominant. It is further found that for each considered reaction, the total yields of the charged-particle $X$ may be dominantly contributed from one, two or three ($\gamma$,$X_{i}$) channels within a specific, narrow energy range of the incident $\gamma$-beam. Furthermore, the energy spectra of the ($\gamma$,$X_{i}$) channels with $0\leq i\leq 10$ are simulated for each considered reaction, with the incident $\gamma$-beam energies in the respective energy range as derived before. It becomes evident that measurements of the photon-induced reactions with charged-particle emissions considered in this work are feasible with the VEGA+ELISSA system and will provide knowledge useful for nuclear astrophysics., Comment: 11 figures, 17 pages

According to the guidelines for the prevention and treatment of BA (2016 edition), they were divided into two groups: acute attack and non-acute attack. The images were processed as follows: using Lung Kit software for image standardization and segmentation, using AK software for image feature extraction, and using R language for data analysis and model construction (training set: test set = 7: 3). The efficacy and clinical effects of the constructed model were evaluated with ROC curve, sensitivity, specificity, calibration curve and decision curve.Results: A total of 112 patients with BA were enrolled, including 80 patients with acute attack (range: 2– 86 years old, mean: 53.89± 17.306 years old, males of 33) and 32 patients with non-acute attack (range: 4– 79 years old, mean: 57.38± 19.223 years old, males of 18). A total of 10 imaging features are finally retained and used to construct model using multi-factor logical regression method. In the training group, the AUC, sensitivity and specificity of the model was 0.881 (95% CI:0.808– 0.955), 0.804 and 0.818, separately; while in the test group, it was 0.792 (95% CI:0.608– 0.976), 0.792 and 0.80, respectively.Conclusion: The model constructed based on radiomics has a good effect on predicting the staging of patients with BA, which provides a new method for clinical diagnosis of staging in BA patients.Keywords: bronchial asthma, BA, Radiomics, computed tomography, CT

We employed the chi-square test to examine ESBL risk factors and utilized propensity score matching (PSM) to negate baseline confounding factors, assessing economic burden through disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), hospital costs and productivity losses. We employed mediation analysis to eliminate confounding factors and better identify ESBL sources of burden related.Results: We found 166 ESBL-EC/KP BSI patients (52.2% of the total examined 318 patients). Post-PSM analysis revealed that ESBL-producing EC/KP will reduce the effectiveness of empirical medication by 19.8%, extend the total length of hospitalization by an average of 3 days, and increase the patient’s financial burden by US&dollar;2047. No significant disparity was found in overall mortality and mean DALYs between the groups. Mediation analysis showed that the link between ESBL and hospital costs is predominantly, if not entirely, influenced by the appropriateness of empirical antibiotic treatment and length of hospital stay.Conclusion: Patients with BSI due to ESBL-producing ESBL-EK incur higher costs compared to those with non-ESBL-EK BSI. Abstract

Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at Jefferson Laboratory's Hall C for the neutron rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_{\Lambda}^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~2})=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~3})=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~3})$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

However, there are few clinical drugs for stroke therapy. Novel and effective neuroprotectants are called on the way.Methods: In this study, 93 steroids from a constructed steroidal library were randomly numbered and blindly evaluated in an L-glutamate-induced HT-22 oxidative stress model. The neuroprotective effects of 5 candidates were further investigated in potassium deprivation-induced apoptosis of cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs), D-glutamate-induced excitotoxicity of CGNs, and cortical neuron (CN) models.Results: Interestingly, unblinding revealed that cholest-4-ene-3,6-dione (78), a cholesterol derivative, was first found to have comprehensive neuroprotective effects in all cell models. 78 administration also decreased the infarction volume and improved motor function in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model rats. Additionally, 78 treatment decreased intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NO production in the HT-22 cell model. Finally, lipidomics and molecular docking results showed that 78 may exert its neuroprotective effects by increasing platelet-activating factor (PAF) analog 1-(9Z-pentadecenoyl)-glycero-3-phosphocholine production.Conclusion: This study indicates that 78, a novel neuroprotectant, is a promising therapeutic candidate with comprehensive neuroprotective effects for the treatment of ischemic stroke by decreasing ROS/reactive nitrogen species (RNS) levels and increasing 1-(9Z-pentadecenoyl)-glycero-3-phospho-choline production. Genetic factors have a certain proportion in the risk factors of atherosclerosis. The purpose was to investigate the relationship of cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) polymorphisms with multi-site atherosclerosis.Methods: The study included 410 patients with single-site atherosclerosis and 529 patients with multi-site atherosclerosis. The relationship between CYP2C19 rs4244285 and rs4986893 polymorphisms and single-site atherosclerosis and multi-site atherosclerosis was analyzed.Results: The proportion of CYP2C19 rs4244285 A allele (35.9% vs 29.9%, P=0.007) and rs4986893 G allele (97.7% vs 94.8%, P=0.001) in multi-site atherosclerosis group was significantly higher than that in single-site atherosclerosis group. The distribution of CYP2C19 genotypes was significantly different between the two groups (P=0.002). The results of univariate logistic regression indicated that CYP2C19 &ast;1/&ast;3 genotype (&ast;1/&ast;3 vs &ast;1/&ast;1: odds ratio (OR) 0.456, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.231– 0.902, P=0.024) may decrease risk of multi-site atherosclerosis, while &ast;2/&ast;2 genotype (&ast;2/&ast;2 vs &ast;1/&ast;1: OR 1.780, 95% CI: 1.100– 2.880, P=0.019) may increase risk of multi-site atherosclerosis. Multivariate logistic regression (adjusted for gender, age, smoking, drinking, hypertension, and diabetes) indicated that CYP2C19 &ast;1/&ast;3 genotype (&ast;1/&ast;3 vs &ast;1/&ast;1: OR 0.459, 95% CI: 0.231– 0.909, P=0.026) may be an independent protective factor for multi-site atherosclerosis, while &ast;2/&ast;2 genotype (&ast;2/&ast;2 vs &ast;1/&ast;1: OR 1.767, 95% CI: 1.091– 2.864, P=0.021) may be an independent risk factor for multi-site atherosclerosis.Conclusion: CYP2C19 &ast;1/&ast;3 genotype may be an independent protective factor for multi-site atherosclerosis, while &ast;2/&ast;2 genotype may be an independent risk factor for multi-site atherosclerosis.Keywords: CYP2C19, genotype, multi-site atherosclerosis, polyvascular disease

The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive value of the prothrombin time-international normalized ratio to albumin ratio (PTAR) for mortality in patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF).Patients and methods: A total of 354 patients with HBV-ACLF were included in the retrospective study. Patients were divided into survival and non-survival groups based on 90-day follow-up. Cox regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between PTAR and 90-day mortality in patients with HBV-ACLF. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the effectiveness of PTAR in predicting mortality.Results: PTAR was significantly higher in non-survivors than in survivors. The results of multivariate analysis showed that PTAR was a valid independent predictor of mortality in patients with HBV-ACLF. Its predictive ability for mortality was similar to that of the Child-Turcotte-Pugh score, the end-stage liver disease model (MELD) score, and the MELD-sodium score.Conclusion: PTAR may be a simple and effective tool for predicting the prognosis of patients with HBV-ACLF.Keywords: acute-on-chronic liver failure, hepatitis B virus, prothrombin time-international normalized ratio to albumin ratio, prognosis

Abstract

To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Due to the lack of free neutron targets, studies of the structure of the neutron are typically made by scattering electrons from either $^2$H or $^3$He targets. In order to extract useful neutron information from a $^3$He target, one must understand how the neutron in a $^3$He system differs from a free neutron by taking into account nuclear effects such as final state interactions and meson exchange currents. The target single spin asymmetry $A_y^0$ is an ideal probe of such effects, as any deviation from zero indicates effects beyond plane wave impulse approximation. New measurements of the target single spin asymmetry $A_y^0$ at $Q^2$ of 0.46 and 0.96 (GeV/$c)^2$ were made at Jefferson Lab using the quasi-elastic $^3\mathrm{He}^{\uparrow}(e,e'n)$ reaction. Our measured asymmetry decreases rapidly, from $>20\%$ at $Q^2=0.46$ (GeV/$c)^2$ to nearly zero at $Q^2=0.96$ (GeV$/c)^2$, demonstrating the fall-off of the reaction mechanism effects as $Q^2$ increases. We also observed a small $\epsilon$-dependent increase in $A_y^0$ compared to previous measurements, particularly at moderate $Q^2$. This indicates that upcoming high $Q^2$ measurements from the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV program can cleanly probe neutron structure from polarized $^3$He using plane wave impulse approximation., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We study the effect of inhomogeneous strain on transition-metal dichalcogenides with a large intrinsic gap in their spectrum. It is found that, by tuning the chemical potential, superconductivity can preserve within the strain-induced discrete pseudo Landau levels (LLs), which introduce interesting topological properties to these systems. As we show, the superconductivity for integer fillings is quantum critical, and the quantum critical coupling strength is determined by the spacing between the two LLs closest to the Fermi level. For partial fillings, the superconducting gap is scaled linearly with the coupling strength, and decreases rapidly when the chemical potential shifts away from the middle of each LL. In the presence of a Zeeman field, a pair of Majorana modes emerge simultaneously in the two valleys of strained dichalcogenides. When valley symmetry is further destroyed, a single Majorana mode can be expected to emerge at the edges of the strained monolayer dichalcogenides., Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl at energies between the one- and two-neutron thresholds using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. Our new measurement results in cross sections significantly different from the previously reported bremsstrahlung experiment, leading to rather different GDR parameters, in particular to lower GDR peak energies and higher peak cross sections. The photoneutron data are used to constrain the $\gamma$-ray strength function on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle random phase approximation using the Gogny D1M interaction. Supplementing the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength function with the zero-limit E1 and M1 contributions for the de-excitation mode, we estimate the Maxwellian-averaged cross section for the s-process branching-point nucleus $^{204}$Tl in the context of the $^{205}$Pb - $^{205}$Tl chronometry., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, to be submitted to PRC

Abstract

We performed susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on single crystalline BaMn$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Based on the results, we revisited its spin structure with a more accurate solution and constructed a magnetic phase diagram with applied field along the $b$-axis, which contains a spin flop transition around 6 T. We also used susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat results confirmed the ferrimagnetic-like magnetism in polycrystalline BaCo$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Furthermore, we performed LSDA + U calculations for the BaM$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$ (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system. Our discussions based on the comparison among the obtained magnetic exchange interactions suggest the different structures and electronic configurations are the reasons for the different magnetic properties among the system members.

Abstract

We studied the in-plane dynamic and static charge conductivity of electron doped Sr2IrO4 using optical spectroscopy and DC transport measurements. The optical conductivity indicates that the pristine material is an indirect semiconductor with a direct Mott-gap of 0.55 eV. Upon substitution of 2% La per formula unit the Mott-gap is suppressed except in a small fraction of the material (15%) where the gap survives, and overall the material remains insulating. Instead of a zero energy mode (or Drude peak) we observe a soft collective mode (SCM) with a broad maximum at 40 meV. Doping to 10% increases the strength of the SCM, and a zero-energy mode occurs together with metallic DC conductivity. Further increase of the La substitution doesn't change the spectral weight integral up to 3 eV. It does however result in a transfer of the SCM spectral weight to the zero-energy mode, with a corresponding reduction of the DC resistivity for all temperatures from 4 to 300 K. The presence of a zero-energy mode signals that at least part of the Fermi surface remains ungapped at low temperatures, whereas the SCM appears to be caused by pinning a collective frozen state involving part of the doped electrons.

Abstract

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40$^{\circ}$ and covered a wide range in Bjorken $x$ ($0.3 < x < 0.8$). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element, $\tilde{d}_2^p$, was extracted from the measured asymmetries at $Q^2$ values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV$^2$. The data display the opposite sign compared to most quark models, including the lattice QCD result, and an apparently unexpected scale dependence. Furthermore when combined with the neutron data in the same $Q^2$ range the results suggest a flavor independent average color Lorentz force.

Abstract

In this work, we present new data on the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) cross section studied with a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan contributing torwards resolving a long standing discrepancy between existing measurements of this cross section. Results for $\gamma$-ray strength function below threshold obtained by applying the Oslo method to $^{89}$Y($p,p'\gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidences combined with the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) data this providing experimental data for the $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{89}$Y for $\gamma$ energies in the range of $\approx 1.6$ Mev to $\approx$ 20 MeV. A low-energy enhancement is seen for $\gamma$-rays below $\approx 2.5$ MeV. Shell-model calculations indicate that this feature is caused by strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted from $^{89}$Y($d,p \gamma$)$^{90}$Y coincidences using the Oslo method. Using the ($\gamma,n$) and ($d,p\gamma$) data as experimental constraints, we have calculated the $^{89}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{90}$Y cross section with the TALYS reaction code. Our results have been compared with directly measured (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and evaluations. The $N=50$ isotope $^{89}$Y is an important bottleneck in the s-process and the magnitude of the $^{89}$Y(n,$\gamma)$ cross section is key to understanding how s-process stars produce heavy isotopes., Comment: 18 pages (including references) and 16 figures, to be submitted to PRC

Abstract

We report on a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in electron-induced breakup of $^3\mathrm{He}$ proceeding to $\mathrm{pd}$ and $\mathrm{ppn}$ final states, performed in quasi-elastic kinematics at $Q^2 = 0.25\,(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$ for missing momenta up to $250\,\mathrm{MeV}/c$. These observables represent highly sensitive tools to investigate the electromagnetic and spin structure of $^3\mathrm{He}$ and the relative importance of two- and three-body effects involved in the breakup reaction dynamics. The measured asymmetries cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by state-of-the-art calculations of $^3\mathrm{He}$ unless their three-body segment is adjusted, indicating that the spin-dependent part of the nuclear interaction governing the three-body breakup process is much smaller than previously thought., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

The economic return on investment of a commercial photovoltaic system depends greatly on its performance over the long term and, hence, its degradation rate. Many methods have been proposed for assessing system degradation rates from outdoor performance data. However, comparing reported values from one analyst and research group to another requires a common baseline of performance; consistency between methods and analysts can be a challenge. An interlaboratory study was conducted involving different volunteer analysts reporting on the same photovoltaic performance data using different methodologies. Initial variability of the reported degradation rates was so high that analysts could not come to a consensus whether a system degraded or not. More consistent values are received when written guidance is provided to each analyst. Further improvements in analyst variance was accomplished by using the free open-source software RdTools, allowing a reduction in variance between analysts by more than two orders of magnitude over the first round, where multiple analysis methods are allowed. This article highlights many pitfalls in conducting 'routine' degradation analysis, and it addresses some of the factors that must be considered when comparing degradation results reported by different analysts or methods.
