Elevated production of extracellular matrix (ECM) in tumor stroma is a critical obstacle for drug penetration. Here we demonstrate that ATP-citrate lyase (ACLY) is significantly upregulated in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) to produce tumor ECM. Using a self-assembling nanoparticle-design approach, a carrier-free nanoagent (CFNA) is fabricated by simply assembling NDI-091143, a specific ACLY inhibitor, and doxorubicin (DOX) or paclitaxel (PTX), the first-line chemotherapeutic drug, via multiple noncovalent interactions. After arriving at the CAFs-rich tumor site, NDI-091143-mediated ACLY inhibition in CAFs can block the de novo synthesis of fatty acid, thereby dampening the fatty acid-involved energy metabolic process. As the lack of enough energy, the energetic CAFs will be in a dispirited state that is unable to produce abundant ECM, thereby significantly improving drug perfusion in tumors and enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapy. Such a simple drug assembling strategy aimed at CAFs' ACLY-mediated metabolism pathway presents the feasibility of stromal matrix reduction to potentiate chemotherapy.

Given the key roles of cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in shaping tumor stroma, this study shows a CAF-associated ITGB1-inactivating peptide-enriched membrane nanodelivery system (designated as PMNPs-D) to simultaneously target CAFs and tumor cells for boosted chemotherapy through promoted drug perfusion. In the structure of PMNPs-D, the PLGA-based inner core is loaded with the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin, and the outer surface is cloaked by hybrid biomembranes with the insertion of integrin β1 (ITGB1) inhibiting peptide (i.e., FNIII14). After prolonged blood circulation and actively targeting in tumor sites, PMNPs-D can respond to CAF-overexpressed fibroblast activation protein-α (FAP-α) to trigger the release of FNIII14, which will bind to ITGB1 and inhibit CAFs' biological function in producing the stromal matrix, thereby loosening the condensed stromal structure and enhancing the permeability of nanotherapeutics in tumors. As a result, this tailor-designed nanosystem shows substantial tumor inhibition and metastasis retardation in aggressive adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) tumor-harboring mice.

Macrophage-mediated cellular phagocytosis (MMCP) plays a critical role in conducting antitumor immunotherapy but is usually impaired by the intrinsic phagocytosis evading ability of tumor cells and the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, a MMCP-boosting hydrogel (TCCaGM) was elaborately engineered by encapsulating granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and a therapeutic nanoplatform (TCCaN) that preloaded with the tunicamycin (Tuni) and catalase (CAT) with the assistance of CaCO 3 nanoparticles (NPs). Strikingly, the hypoxic/acidic TME was efficiently alleviated by the engineered hydrogel, "eat me" signal calreticulin (CRT) was upregulated, while the "don't eat me" signal CD47 was downregulated on tumor cells, and the infiltrated DCs were recruited and activated, all of which contributed to boosting the macrophage-mediated phagocytosis and initiating tumor-specific CD8 + T cells responses. Meanwhile, the remodeled TME was beneficial to accelerate the polarization of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) to the antitumoral M1-like phenotype, further heightening tumoricidal immunity. With the combination of PD-1 antibody (αPD-1), the designed hydrogel significantly heightened systemic antitumor immune responses and long-term immunological effects to control the development of primary and distant tumors as well as suppress tumor metastasis and recurrence, which established an optimal strategy for high-performance antitumor immunotherapy.

The chemotherapy efficacy of nanodrugs is restricted by poor tumor targeting and uptake. Here, an engineered biohybrid living material (designated as EcN@HPB) is constructed by integrating paclitaxel and BAY-876 bound human serum albumin nanodrugs (HPB) with Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN). Due to the inherent tumor tropism of EcN, EcN@HPB could actively target the tumor site and competitively deprive glucose through bacterial respiration. Thus, albumin would be used as an alternative nutrient source for tumor metabolism, which significantly promotes the internalization of HPB by tumor cells. Subsequently, BAY-876 internalized along with HPB nanodrugs would further depress glucose uptake of tumor cells via inhibiting glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1). Together, the decline of glucose bioavailability of tumor cells would activate and promote the macropinocytosis in an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-dependent manner, resulting in more uptake of HPB by tumor cells and boosting the therapeutic outcome of paclitaxel.

Yam is an important food staple for millions of people globally, particularly those in the developing countries of West Africa and the Pacific Islands. To sustain the growing population, yam production must be increased amidst the many biotic and abiotic stresses. Plant viruses are among the most detrimental of plant pathogens and have caused great losses of crop yield and quality, including those of yam. Knowledge and understanding of virus biology and ecology are important for the development of diagnostic tools and disease management strategies to combat the spread of yam-infecting viruses. This review aims to highlight current knowledge on key yam-infecting viruses by examining their characteristics, genetic diversity, disease symptoms, diagnostics, and elimination to provide a synopsis for consideration in developing diagnostic strategy and disease management for yam.

Background: Fatigue of the scapular musculature might affect the sensorimotor system and neuromuscular control and therefore impair the dynamic alignment of the scapula. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of scapular muscle fatigue on joint position sense and the neuromuscular performance of the scapulothoracic joint., Methods: Thirty healthy subjects were recruited. The joint position sense (measured as reposition errors during the scapular elevation and protraction task) of the scapulothoracic joint and scapular kinematics and muscle activation (% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction) during scaption, shoulder elevation in the scapular plane, before and after the fatigue task (modified push-up) were measured. The repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the effects of fatigue on scapular reposition error and neuromuscular control., Results: Although joint reposition sense did not change after fatigue, muscle activation of the serratus anterior increased significantly (18.5%-26.3%, p = 0.006, elevation task; 15.2%-27.4%, p = 0.037, protraction task). At 120° scaption, the scapula showed a decreased posterior tilt (13.8°-10.3°, p < 0.001), increased protraction (10.2°-13.3°, p = 0.004) and lateral rotation (52.8°-54.4°, p = 0.005). Muscle activation of the serratus anterior increased (65.9%-84.6%, p = 0.002) during 90°-120°scaption., Conclusion: Scapular muscle fatigue did not alter the scapulothoracic joint position sense, but increased serratus anterior activation and resulted in a more anteriorly tilted, protracted, and laterally rotated scapula during scaption. The excessive lactate in the tumor microenvironment always leads to poor therapeutic outcomes of chemotherapy. In this study, a self-driven bioreactor (defined as SO@MDH, where SO is Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and MDH is MIL-101 metal-organic framework nanoparticles/doxorubicin/hyaluronic acid) is rationally constructed via the integration of doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101 nanoparticles with SO to sensitize chemotherapy. Owing to the intrinsic tumor tropism and electron-driven respiration of SO, the biohybrid SO@MDH could actively target and colonize hypoxic and eutrophic tumor regions and anaerobically metabolize lactate accompanied by the transfer of electrons to Fe 3+ , which is the key component of the MIL-101 nanoparticles. As a result, the intratumoral lactate would undergo continuous catabolism coupled with the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and the subsequent degradation of MIL-101 frameworks, leading to an expeditious drug release for effective chemotherapy. Meanwhile, the generated Fe 2+ will be promptly oxidized by the abundant hydrogen peroxide in the tumor microenvironment to reproduce Fe 3+ , which is, in turn, beneficial to circularly catabolize lactate and boost chemotherapy. More importantly, the consumption of intratumoral lactic acid could significantly inhibit the expression of multidrug resistance-related ABCB1 protein (also named P-glycoprotein (P-gp)) for conquering drug-resistant tumors. SO@MDH demonstrated here holds high tumor specificity and promising chemotherapeutic efficacy for suppressing tumor growth and overcoming multidrug resistance, confirming its potential prospects in cancer therapy.

A tumor cell membrane-camouflaged therapeutic system was fabricated to eliminate tumors by embedding apyrase and glucose oxidase (GOx) into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles for tumor-targeted metabolic therapy. Experimental results demonstrated that these functional nanoparticles could disturb the energy supply of tumor cells by depleting ATP and glucose and efficiently induce tumor cell death.

Immunotherapy that can activate immunity or enhance the immunogenicity of tumors has emerged as one of the most effective methods for cancer therapy. Nevertheless, single-mode immunotherapy is still confronted with several critical challenges, such as the low immune response, the low tumor infiltration, and the complex immunosuppression tumor microenvironment. Recently, the combination of immunotherapy with other therapeutic modalities has emerged as a powerful strategy to augment the therapeutic outcome in fighting against cancer. In this review, recent research advances of the combination of immunotherapy with chemotherapy, phototherapy, radiotherapy, sonodynamic therapy, metabolic therapy, and microwave thermotherapy are summarized. The vascular endothelium, which plays an essential role in maintaining the normal shape and function of blood vessels, is a natural barrier between the circulating blood and the vascular wall tissue. The endothelial damage can cause vascular lesions, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis. After the vascular intima injury, the body starts the endothelial repair (re-endothelialization) to inhibit the neointimal hyperplasia. Endothelial progenitor cell is the precursor of endothelial cells and plays an important role in the vascular re-endothelialization. However, re-endothelialization is inevitably affected in vivo and in vitro by factors, which can be divided into two types, namely, promotion and inhibition, and act on different links of the vascular re-endothelialization. This article reviews these factors and related mechanisms.

Cell primitive-based functional materials that combine the advantages of natural substances and nanotechnology have emerged as attractive therapeutic agents for cancer therapy. Cell primitives are characterized by distinctive biological functions, such as long-term circulation, tumor specific targeting, immune modulation etc. Moreover, synthetic nanomaterials featuring unique physical/chemical properties have been widely used as effective drug delivery vehicles or anticancer agents to treat cancer. The combination of these two kinds of materials will catalyze the generation of innovative biomaterials with multiple functions, high biocompatibility and negligible immunogenicity for precise cancer therapy. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in the development of cell primitive-based functional materials for cancer therapy. Different cell primitives, including bacteria, phages, cells, cell membranes, and other bioactive substances are introduced with their unique bioactive functions, and strategies in combining with synthetic materials, especially nanoparticulate systems, for the construction of function-enhanced biomaterials are also summarized. Furthermore, foreseeable challenges and future perspectives are also included for the future research direction in this field.

Inspired by nature, where dynamic networks control the levels of gene expression and the activities of transcribed/translated proteins, we introduce nucleic acid-based constitutional dynamic networks (CDNs) as functional modules mimicking native circuits by demonstrating CDNs-guided programmed synthesis of genes, controlled transcription of RNAs, and dictated transcription/translation synthesis of proteins. An auxiliary CDN consisting of four dynamically equilibrated constituents AA', AB', BA', and BB' is orthogonally triggered by two different inputs yielding two different compositionally reconfigured CDNs. Subjecting the parent auxiliary CDN to two hairpins, H A and H B , and two templates T A and T B and a nicking/replication machinery leads to the cleavage of the hairpins and to the activation of the nicking/replication machineries that synthesize two "genes", e.g., the histidine-dependent DNAzyme g1 and the Zn 2+ -ion-dependent DNAzyme g2. The triggered orthogonal reconfiguration of the parent CDN to the respective CDNs leads to the programmed preferred CDN-guided synthesis of g1 or g2. Similarly, the triggered reconfigured CDNs are subjected to two hairpins H C and H D , the templates I'/I and J'/J, and the RNA polymerase (RNAp)/NTPs machinery. While the cleavage of the hairpins by the constituents associated with the parent CDN leads to the transcription of the broccoli aptamer recognizing the DFHBI ligand and of the aptamer recognizing the malachite green (MG) ligand, the orthogonally triggered CDNs lead to the CDNs-guided enhanced transcription of either the DFHBI aptamer or the MG aptamer. In addition, subjecting the triggered reconfigured CDNs to predesigned hairpins H E and H F , the templates M'/M and N'/N, the RNAp/NTPs machinery, and the cell-free ribosome t-RNA machinery leads to the CDNs-guided transcription/translation of the green fluorescence protein (GFP) or red fluorescence protein (RFP).

Poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-based thermally responsive micelles are of great importance as smart materials for a number of applications such as drug delivery and biosensing, owing to their tunable lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Their design and synthesis in the nanoscale size range have been widely studied, and research interest in their structural and physic-chemical properties is continually growing. In this Viewpoint, representative research on the construction of PNIPAAm-based thermally responsive micelles as well as their applications are highlighted and discussed, which would serve as a good start for newcomers in this field and a positive guide for future research.

All-DNA scaffolds act as templates for the organization of photosystem I model systems. A series of DNA templates composed of Zn II -protoporphyrin IX (Zn II PPIX)-functionalized G-quadruplex conjugated to the 3'- or 5'-end of the tyrosinamide (TA) aptamer and Zn II PPIX/G-quadruplex linked to the 3'- and 5'-ends of the TA aptamer through a four-thymidine bridge. Effective photoinduced electron transfer (ET) from Zn II PPIX/G-quadruplex to bipyridinium-functionalized tyrosinamide, TA-MV 2+ , bound to the TA aptamer units is demonstrated. The effectiveness of the primary ET quenching of Zn II PPIX/G-quadruplex by TA-MV 2+ controls the efficiency of the generation of TA-MV +. . An oncogenic role, p21-activated kinase 5 (PAK5), has proven as a significant mediator for many cellular progression, which is expressed highly in human organs such as lung, liver, kidney, blood vessels endothelial cells and inflammatory cells. PAK5 was primitively detected in the cerebrum and accelerated the filopodia formation in neurocytes. It can reverse the effect of Rho and adjust its activity to mediate maintenance and development of nerve axon by binding with Cdc42-GTP. Moreover, PAK5 has been suggested to mediate protean, multitudinous and inscrutable functions in cancer. Currently, many researches indicated that PAK5 was dysregulated in ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, melanoma, osteosarcoma, renal carcinoma, breast cancer, gastric cancer and so on, which was involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion. The broadband C 3 N 4 semiconductor absorbs in the UV region, λ = 330-380 nm, a feature limiting its application for light-to-energy conversion. The unique surface adsorption properties of C 3 N 4 allow, however, the binding of a photosensitizer, operating in the visible-solar spectrum to the surface of C 3 N 4 . Coupling of the energy levels of the photosensitizer with the energy levels of C 3 N 4 allows effective photoinduced electron-transfer quenching and subsequent charge separation in the hybrid structures. Two methods to adsorb a photosensitizer on the C 3 N 4 nanoparticles are described. One is exemplified by the adsorption of Zn(II)-protoporphyrin IX on C 3 N 4 using π-π interactions. The second method utilizes the specific binding interactions of single-stranded nucleic acids on C 3 N 4 and involves the binding of a Ru(II)-tris-bipyridine-modified nucleic acid on the C 3 N 4 nanoparticles. Effective electron-transfer quenching of the photoexcited photosensitizers by C 3 N 4 proceeds in the two hybrid systems. The two hybrid photosystems induce the effective photosensitized reduction of N , N '-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium, MV 2+ , to MV +• , in the presence of Na 2 EDTA as a sacrificial electron donor. The generation of MV +• is ca. 5-fold higher as compared to the formation of MV +• in the presence of the photosensitizer alone (in the absence of C 3 N 4 ). The effective generation of MV +• in the photosystems is attributed to the efficient quenching of the photosensitizers, followed by effective charge separation of the electrons in the conduction band of C 3 N 4 and the holes in the oxidized photosensitizer. The subsequent transfer of the conduction-band electrons to MV 2+ and the oxidation of Na 2 EDTA by the oxidized photosensitizers lead to the effective formation of MV +• . The photogenerated MV +• by the two hybrid photosystems is used to catalyze H 2 evolution in the presence of Pt nanoparticle catalysts and to mediate the reduction of NADP + to NADPH, in the presence of ferredoxin-NADP + reductase, FNR. The ability to couple the photogenerated NADPH to drive NADP + -dependent biocatalytic transformations is demonstrated.

In this study, we report on a redox-controllable and reversible complete "ON"/"OFF"-switchable aptamer binding to ATP. A series of methylene blue-modified ATP-aptamers was synthesized, revealing improved binding affinities toward ATP as compared to the nonmodified aptamer. These binding affinities were dependent on the conjugation site of the redox label on the aptamer scaffold. Importantly, we find that the oxidized methylene blue-modified aptamers bind to ATP with micromolar affinity, while the reduced form lacks binding affinity toward ATP, resulting in an unprecedented complete "ON"/"OFF" redox-controllable aptamer switch. We demonstrate the cyclic "ON"/"OFF" binding of ATP to the methylene blue-functionalized aptamer through cyclic oxidation and reduction of the redox label using both chemical and electrochemical means. Molecular dynamics and docking simulations were performed to account for the redox-switchable properties of the conjugated aptamers and to rationalize the enhanced binding affinities of the different aptamer designs.

Sequence-specific aptamers act as functional scaffolds for the assembly of photosynthetic model systems. The Ru(II)- tris -bipyridine photosensitizer is conjugated by different binding modes to the antityrosinamide aptamer to yield a set of photosensitizer-aptamer binding scaffolds. The N -methyl- N' -(3-aminopropane)-4,4 ' -bipyridinium electron acceptor, MV 2+ , is covalently linked to tyrosinamide, TA, to yield the conjugate TA-MV 2+ . The tyrosinamide unit in TA-MV 2+ acts as a ligand for anchoring TA-MV 2+ to the Ru(II)- tris -bipyridine-aptamer scaffold, generating the diversity of photosensitizer-aptamer/electron acceptor supramolecular conjugates. Effective electron transfer quenching in the photosynthetic model systems is demonstrated, and the quenching efficiencies are controlled by the structural features of the conjugates. The redox species generated by the photosensitizer-aptamer/electron acceptor supramolecular systems mediate the ferredoxin-NADP + reductase, FNR, catalyzed synthesis of NADPH, and the Pt-nanoparticle-catalyzed evolution of hydrogen (H 2 ). The novelty of the study rests on the unprecedented use of aptamer scaffolds as functional units for organizing photosynthetic model systems.

UiO-68 metal-organic framework nanoparticles (NMOFs) are loaded with a doxorubicin drug (fluorescent dye analogs) and locked by means of structurally engineered duplex nucleic acid structures, where one strand is covalently linked to the NMOFs and the second strand is hybridized with the anchor strand. Besides the complementarity of the second strand to the anchor sequence, it includes the complementary sequence to the microRNAs (miRNA)-21 or miRNA-221 that is specific miRNA biomarker for MCF-7 breast cancer cells or OVCAR-3 ovarian cancer cells. In the presence of the respective miRNA biomarkers, the miRNA-induced displacement of the strand associated with the anchor strand proceeds, resulting in the release of DNA/miRNA duplexes. The released duplexes are, however, engineered to be digested in the presence of exonuclease III, Exo III, a process that recycles the miRNAs and provides the autonomous amplified unlocking of the NMOFs and the release of the doxorubicin load (or the fluorescent dye analogs) even at low concentrations of miRNA. Preliminary cell experiments reveal that the respective NMOFs are unlocked by the miRNA-21 or miRNA-221, resulting in selective cytotoxicity toward MCF-7 breast cancer cells or OVCAR-3 ovarian cancer cells., (© 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Background: FOXD3 is aberrantly regulated in several tumors, but its underlying mechanisms in ovarian cancer (OC) remains largely unknown. The present study aimed to explore the role and associated mechanisms of FOXD3 in OC., Methods: Microarray data from GEO was used to analyze differential CpG sites and differentially methylated regions (DMR) in tumor tissues and Illumina 450 genome-wide methylation data was employed. The FOXD3 expression level was determined through qRT-PCR and western blot analysis. Wound healing test, colony formation and flow cytometry assay were utilized to analyze cell migration, proliferation abilities, cell cycle and cell apoptosis, respectively. Finally, the effect of FOXD3 on tumor growth was investigated through in vivo xenograft experiments., Results: GEO data analysis showed that FOXD3 was hypermethylated in OC tissues. Also, qRT-PCR revealed that FOXD3 was low expressed and methylation-specific PCR (MSP) confirmed that the methylation level of FOXD3 was hypermethylated. Combined treatment of 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-Aza-dC) could synergistically restored FOXD3 expression. Finally, in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that demethylated FOXD3 decreased cell proliferation and migration abilities, and increased the cell apoptosis. In vivo experiment detected that demethylated FOXD3 restrained tumor growth., Conclusions: FOXD3 could act as a tumor suppressor to inhibit cell proliferation, migration and promote cell apoptosis in OC cells.

Product-service system (PSS) is an important way of the transformation and upgrading of modern manufacturing industry, it is also one of core development trends of intelligent manufacturing. A PSS can be configured quickly and cheaply to meet the customer's personalized product and service requirements via a PPS design platform, and a modular master structure is the core of PSS design platform. When a PSS instance is configured, it needs to determine the module types and make decisions on the types of PSS firstly, so as to build a master structure for PSS. Therefore, the decision-making on module types and customization degree is a key step to establish the PSS modular master structure. This article proposes a five-step planning method for the modular structure planning of PSS. Firstly, the PSS module types are classified based on the Kano model. Then, bi-level decision-making on modules and its properties are finished by using conjoint analysis method, includes the customer's decision-making on modules and their properties, and the manufacturer's modules and their properties, which provides support for PSS modular optimization configuration design. Finally, the proposed methodology is validated through the case of power transformer. The proposed module planning method for the PSS modular structure helps to determine the module types for PSS services solution layer and generic part layer.

Recently, diverse functional materials that take subcellular structures as therapeutic targets are playing increasingly important roles in cancer therapy. Here, particular emphasis is placed on four kinds of therapies, including chemotherapy, gene therapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and hyperthermal therapy, which are the most widely used approaches for killing cancer cells by the specific destruction of subcellular organelles. Moreover, some non-drug-loaded nanoformulations (i.e., metal nanoparticles and molecular self-assemblies) with a fatal effect on cells by influencing the subcellular functions without the use of any drug molecules are also included. According to the basic principles and unique performances of each treatment, appropriate strategies are developed to meet task-specific applications by integrating specific materials, ligands, as well as methods. In addition, the combination of two or more therapies based on multifunctional nanostructures, which either directly target specific subcellular organelles or release organelle-targeted therapeutics, is also introduced with the intent of superadditive therapeutic effects. Zeolitic Zn 2+ -imidazolate cross-linked framework nanoparticles, ZIF-8 NMOFs, are used as "smart" glucose-responsive carriers for the controlled release of drugs. The ZIF-8 NMOFs are loaded with the respective drug and glucose oxidase (GOx), and the GOx-mediated aerobic oxidation of glucose yields gluconic acid and H 2 O 2 . The acidification of the NMOFs' microenvironment leads to the degradation of the nanoparticles and the release of the loaded drugs. In one sense-and-treat system, GOx and insulin are loaded in the NMOFs. In the presence of glucose, the nanoparticles are unlocked, resulting in the release of insulin. The release of insulin is controlled by the concentration of glucose. In the second sense-and-treat system, the NMOFs are loaded with the antivascular endothelial growth factor aptamer (VEGF aptamer) and GOx. In the presence of glucose, the ZIF-8 NMOFs are degraded, leading to the release of the VEGF aptamer, which acts as a potential inhibitor of the angiogenetic regeneration of blood vessels by VEGF. As calcination of the VEGF-generated blood vessels leads to blindness of diabetic patients, the functional NMOFs might act as "smart" materials for the treatment of macular diseases. The potential cytotoxicity of the NMOFs originated from the GOx-generated H 2 O 2 is resolved by the co-immobilization of the H 2 O 2 -scavanger catalase in the NMOFs.

The nanoplatform GNR-ACPP-PpIX (designated as GNR-ACPI) is designed for dual image guided combined activatable photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). In GNR-ACPI, gold nanorods (GNRs) are modified with a protoporphyrin (PpIX, a PDT agent) conjugated activatable cell penetrating peptide (ACPP), which consists of the matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2) sensitive peptide sequence GPLGLAG. First, the photoactivity of PpIX is effectively quenched by GNRs due to the strong near infrared region light absorption of GNR and the special "U type" structure of ACPP induced close contact between PpIX and GNR. However, once arriving at the tumor site, the GPLGLAG sequence is hydrolyzed by the MMP-2 overexpressed by tumor cells, resulting in the release of the residual cell membrane penetrating peptide (CPP) attached PpIX (CPP-PpIX) with the recovery of photoactivity of PpIX. In addition, with the help of CPP, more efficient cellular uptake of PpIX by tumor cells can be achieved, which will greatly improve the PDT efficacy. Moreover, the GNR can also be utilized for photothermic imaging as well as PTT for tumors. In this study, we developed a general method to decorate plasmonic gold nanorods (GNRs) with a CD44-targeting functional polymer, containing a hyaluronic acid (HA)-targeting moiety and a small molecule Glut1 inhibitor of diclofenac (DC), to obtain GNR/HA-DC. This nanosystem exhibited the superiority of selectively sensitizing tumor cells for photothermal therapy (PTT) by inhibiting anaerobic glycolysis. Upon specifically targeting CD44, sequentially time-dependent DC release could be achieved by the trigger of hyaluronidase (HAase), which abundantly existed in tumor tissues. The released DC depleted the Glut1 level in tumor cells and induced a cascade effect on cellular metabolism by inhibiting glucose uptake, blocking glycolysis, decreasing ATP levels, hampering heat shock protein (HSP) expression, and ultimately leaving malignant cells out from the protection of HSPs to stress (e.g., heat), and then tumor cells were more easy to kill. Owing to the sensitization effect of GNR/HA-DC, CD44 overexpressed tumor cells could be significantly damaged by PTT with an enhanced therapeutic efficiency in vitro and in vivo.

Supramolecular photosensitizers (supraPSs) have emerged as effective photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents. Here, we propose the assembling capacity of supraPSs as a new strategy to construct theranostic nanoplatform with versatile functions aming at high-performance tumor therapy. By coating tirapazamine (TPZ)-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled multilayer, the versatile nanoplatform (TPZ@MCMSN-Gd 3+ ) was obtained with the formation of supraPSs via host-guest interaction and the chelation with paramagnetic Gd 3+ . The TPZ@MCMSN-Gd 3+ could be specifically uptaken by CD44 receptor overexpressed tumor cells and respond to hyaluronidase (HAase) to trigger the release of therapeutics. As confirmed by in vivo studies, TPZ@MCMSN-Gd 3+ showed preferential accumulation in tumor site and significantly inhibited the tumor progression by the collaboration of PDT and bioreductive chemotherapy under NIR fluorescence/MR imaging guidance. Backwater regions have been formed in the downstream of tributaries since the Three Gorge Reservoir (TGR) was impounded, as the most influential area to the aquatic environment within the reservoir. In order to study the effects and significance of the backwater regions on the nutrient cycling and substance fluxes, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), dissolved silicon (DSi) were monitored in situ in Caotang tributary backwater region, the adjacent mainstream and Caotang tributaries' upstream every month from August 2012 to July 2013. The results showed that the concentrations of DIN, DIP and DSi in Caotang tributary backwater region were similar to those in the mainstream, and the monthly variation tendency was very consistent with the mainstream Changjiang. DIN, DIP and DSi in the Caotang tributary were mainly originated from the mainstream. The influence of the mainstream water could extend to the upmost of the backwater region due to the good connection and rapid, sufficient water exchange between mainstream and tributary. Nutrients from the mainstream were retained and consumed by primary producers in the tributary during the growing seasons in spring and summer, while released back to the water during late autumn and winter. Nutrient cycling in the tributary could change the seasonal pattern of nutrient transportation. The mainstream nutrient fluxes could receive significant seasonal modification from the large numbers (more than 40) of tributaries within the TGR domain.

In this work, a ZnO based nanococktail with programmed functions is designed and synthesized for self-synergistic tumor targeting therapy. The nanococktail can actively target tumors via specific interaction of hyaluronic acid (HA) with CD44 receptors and respond to HAase-rich tumor microenvironment to induce intracellular cascade reaction for controlled therapy. The exposed cell-penetrating peptide (R8) potentiates the cellular uptake of therapeutic nanoparticles into targeted tumor cells. Then ZnO cocktail will readily degrade in acidic endo/lysosomes and induce the production of desired reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ. The destructive ROS not only leads to serious cell damage but also triggers the on-demand drug release for precise chemotherapy, thus achieving enhanced antitumor efficiency synergistically. After tail vein injection of ZnO cocktail, a favorable tumor apoptosis rate (71.2 ± 8.2%) is detected, which is significantly superior to that of free drug, doxorubicin (12.9 ± 5.2%). Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that the tailor-made ZnO cocktail with favorable biocompatibility, promising tumor specificity, and self-synergistically therapeutic capacity opens new avenues for cancer therapy., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this paper, a multifunctional theranostic magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MMSN) with magnetic core was developed for magnetic-enhanced tumor-targeted MR imaging and precise therapy. The gatekeeper β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was immobilized on the surface of mesoporous silica shell via platinum(IV) prodrug linking for reduction-triggered intracellular drug release. Then Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide ligand was further introduced onto the gatekeeper β-CD via host-guest interaction for cancer targeting purpose. After active-targeting endocytosis by cancer cells, platinum(IV) prodrug in MMSNs would be restored to active platinum(II) drug in response to the innative reducing microenvironment in cancer cells, resulting in the detachment of β-CD gatekeeper and thus simultaneously triggering the in situ release of anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) entrapped in the MMSNs to kill cancer cells. It was found that with the aid of an external magnetic field, drug loaded MMSNs showed high contrast in MR imaging in vivo and exhibited magnetically enhanced accumulation in the cancer site, leading to significant inhibition of cancer growth with minimal side effects. In this paper, adamantane (Ad) substituted reduction-sensitive polyethylenimine (Ad- b -SS-PEI 600 ) was used as cationic polymer gene vector for DNA loading. And then the α,β CD dimers were applied as the bridges between the Ad- b -SS-PEI 600 /DNA polyplexes and the functional moieties, i.e. targeting moiety and fluorescent probe through effective host-guest interactions. Located in the surface of the assemblies, the postdecorated functional moieties can efficiently exert their own function. It was found that gene delivery platforms thus obtained exhibited promising DNA compaction capability, rapid stimuli responsiveness, and good biocompatibility, and moreover they can mediate efficient gene transfection, targeting, and imaging both in vitro and in vivo .

Nanomaterials that integrate diagnostic and therapeutic functions within a single nanoplatform promise great advances in revolutionizing cancer therapy. A smart multifunctional theranostic drug-delivery system (DDS) based on gold nanorods (abbreviated as GNR/TSDOX) is designed for cancer-targeted imaging and imaging-guided therapy. In this intelligent theranostic DDS, the active targeting ligand biotin is introduced to track cancer sites in vivo. With the aid of photothermal/photoacoustic imaging, GNR/TSDOX can ablate cancer specifically and effectively. When stimulated with a single near-infrared (NIR) light source, this NIR light energy is effectively absorbed and converted into heat by GNR/TSDOX for localized photothermal therapy and the increase in temperature also further triggers the cascaded release of the anticancer drug for combined thermo-chemotherapy. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery has a great potential to revolutionize cancer treatment by enhancing anticancer drug efficacy and reducing drug toxicity. Here, a bioinspired nano-prodrug (BiNp) assembled by an antineoplastic peptidic derivative (FA-KLA-Hy-DOX), a folate acid (FA)-incorporated proapoptotic peptide (KLAKLAK)(2) (KLA) to doxorubicin (DOX) via an acid-labile hydrozone bond (Hy) is constructed. The hydrophobic antineoplastic agent DOX is efficiently shielded in the core of nano-prodrug. With FA targeting moieties on the surface, the obtained BiNp shows significant tumor-targeting ability and enhances the specific uptake of cancer cells. Upon the trigger by the intracellular acidic microenvironment of endosomes, the antineoplastic agent DOX is released on-demand and promotes the apoptosis of cancer cells. Simultaneously, the liberated FA-KLA can induce the dysfunction of mitochondria and evoke mitochondria-dependent apoptosis. Gentianae Urnulae Herba, dried whole herb of Gentiana urnula,is a commonly used Tibetan medicine. However, only the character identification is used as quality control standard officially at present. As a part of project for the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015 edition), the quality standard of this species was established in this study. The tests of water content, total ash, acid-insoluble ash and ethanol-soluble extractives of the crude drugs were carried out following the methods recorded in appendix of Chinese Pharmacopeia (2010 edition, volume 1). The TLC identification method was established by using gentiournoside A as reference substance, and a mixture of ethyl acetate-methanol-water-formic acid(7:1. 5:1: 0. 2) as the developing solvent system on silica gel G TLC plate. The content of gentiournoside A was assayed by HPLC on an Agilent Zorbax SB-C18 (4.6 mm x 250 mm,5 μm) column, using acetonitrile-water (0.1% phosphoric acid) (26:74) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL x min(-1). The column temperature is at 30 degrees C and the detection wavelength is at 240 nm. As a result, gentiournoside A and the other constituents were separated and presented the same fluorescence light comparing with the reference substance on TLC detected under the UV light(366 nm). The methodology validation for the assay of gentiournoside A showed that it was in a good linear correlation in the range of 0.009 95-0.398 g x L(-1) with the regression equation of Y = 1 467.1X +41.407(r = 0.999 9), and the average recovery was 98. 3% (RSD 2.2%). The mass fractions of gentiournoside A, water content, ethanol-soluble extractives of 15 batches samples were varied in the ranges of 0.175% -1.83%, 8.60% - 9.93% and 29.2% - 35.2%, respectively. Total ash and acid-insoluble ash were 10.2% - 17.2% and 5.26% - 10.8% detected from 10 batches samples. The recommended standards of quantitative indexes are that the mass fractions of gentiournoside A and extractives are not less than 0.80% and 26.0%, respectively; the water, total ash and acid-insoluble ash are not more than 12.0%, 15.0% and 8.0%, respectively.

A versatile gold nanoparticle-based multifunctional nanocomposite AuNP@CD-AD-DOX/RGD was constructed flexibly via host-guest interaction for targeted cancer chemotherapy. The pH-sensitive anticancer prodrug AD-Hyd-DOX and the cancer-targeted peptide AD-PEG8-GRGDS were modified on the surface of AuNP@CD simultaneously, which endowed the resultant nanocomposite with the capability to selectively eliminate cancer cells. In vitro studies indicated that the AuNP@CD-AD-DOX/RGD nanocomposite was preferentially uptaken by cancer cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Subsequently, anticancer drug DOX was released rapidly upon the intracellular trigger of the acid microenvirenment of endo/lysosomes, inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. As the ideal drug nanocarrier, the multifunctional gold nanoparticles with the active targeting and controllable intracellular release ability hold the great potential in cancer therapy.

Functional mesoporous silica particles have attracted growing research interest for controlled drug delivery in targeted cancer therapy. For the purpose of efficient targeting tumor cells and reducing the adverse effect of antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX), biocompatible and enzyme-responsive mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with tumor specificity were desired. To construct these functional MSNs, the classic rotaxane structure formed between alkoxysilane tether and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) was employed to anchor onto the orifices of MSNs as gatekeeper in this work. After subsequent modification by multifunctional peptide (azido-GFLGR7RGDS with tumor-targeting, membrane-penetrating, and cathepsin B-responsive functions) to stabilize the gatekeeper, the resulting functional MSNs showed a strong ability to load and seal DOX in their nanopores. When incubating these DOX-loaded MSNs with tumor and normal cells, the nanoparticles could efficiently employ their surface-encoded RGDS and continuous seven arginine (R7) sequences to target tumor cells, penetrate the cell membrane, and enter tumor cells. Because cathepsin B overexpressed in late endosomes and lysosomes of tumor cells could specifically hydrolyze GFLG sequences of the nanovalves, the DOX-loaded MSNs showed an "off-on" drug release behavior that ∼80% loaded DOX could be released within 24 h and thus showed a high rate of apoptosis. Furthermore, in vitro cellular experiments indicated that DOX-loaded MSNs (DOX@MSN-GFLGR7RGDS/α-CD) had high growth inhibition toward αvβ3-positive HeLa cancerous cells. The research might offer a practical way for designing the tumor-targeted and enzyme-induced drug delivery system for cancer therapy.

In order to efficiently control the quality of the Tibetan medicine Gentianae Szechenyii Flos, the quality standard was established in this study. The column temperature is 25 degrees C and the detection wavelength is at 240 nm. As a result, gentiournoside A and the other constituents were separated and presented the same fluorescence light comparing with the reference substance on TLC detected under the UV light(366 nm). The methodology validation for the assay of gentiournoside A showed that it was in a good linear correlation in the range of 10.01-400.32 mg x L(-1) with the regression equation of Y = 1 539.5X - 33.339 (r = 0.999 7), and the average recovery was 99.68% (RSD 1.92%). The mass fractions of gentiournoside A, water content, ethanol-soluble extractives of 19 batches samples were varied in the ranges of 14.48-31.51 mg x g(-1), 11.25% -12.74% and 24.21% - 31.60%, respectively, and total ash was 4.64% - 6.12% detected from 10 batches samples. The recommended standards of quantitative indexes are that the mass fractions of gentiournoside A and extractives are not less than 15.0 mg x g(-1) (1.5%) and 21.0%, respectively; the water and total ash are not more than 13.0% and 6.0%, respectively.

The CO I gene sequences of Qianghuoyu, Pachytriton labiatus and Gehyra mutilata were achieved by PCR amplification and bi-directional sequencing. Furthermore, a pair of specific primers SJYW1 and SJYW2 in the non-conservative district were designed through sequence alignment. The PCR reaction condition was established by changing the annealing temperature and cycle numbers. The results showed that 350 bp DNA fragment was amplified from Qianghuoyu in PCR with annealed temperature at 54 °C and the cycle number was 25 cycles, whereas not any DNA fragment was amplified from P. labiatus and G. mutilata under the same reaction condition. This method is well-performed in the identification of Qianghuoyu for its excellent specificity and repeatability.

Multifunctional Biotin-PEG-b-PLL(Mal)-peptide-DOX polymeric micelles were prepared to selectively eliminate cancer cells. The micelles were able to enhance cancer cell uptake via the receptor-mediated endocytosis and respond to the stimulus of cancer cell excessive secreted protease MMP-2 to release the anticancer drug and induce apoptosis of cancer cells in a targeted manner.

A versatile gold nanoparticle-based multifunctional RB-DEVD-AuNP-DTP has been developed to induce the targeted apoptosis of cancer cells and image in real time the progress of the apoptosis. The multifunctional nanoparticles were demonstrated to have the ability to initiate mitochondria-dependent apoptosis and activate caspase-3 for real-time imaging of the progression of apoptosis.

A multifunctional enveloped nanodevice based on mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) was delicately designed for subcellular co-delivery of drug and therapeutic peptide to tumor cells. Mesoporous silica MCM-41 nanoparticles were used as the core for loading antineoplastic drug topotecan (TPT). The surface of nanoparticles was decorated with mitochondria-targeted therapeutic agent (Tpep) containing triphenylphosphonium (TPP) and antibiotic peptide (KLAKLAK)2 via disulfide linkage, followed by coating with a charge reversal polyanion poly(ethylene glycol)-blocked-2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride-modified poly(L-lysine) (PEG-PLL(DMA)) via electrostatic interaction. It was found that the outer shielding layer could be removed at acidic tumor microenvironment due to the degradation of DMA blocks and the cellular uptake was significantly enhanced by the formation of cationic nanoparticles. After endocytosis, due to the cleavage of disulfide bonds in the presence of intracellular glutathione (GSH), pharmacological agents (Tpep and TPT) could be released from the nanoparticles and subsequently induce specific damage of tumor cell mitochondria and nucleus respectively with remarkable synergistic antitumor effect.

Graphene oxide (GO)-based theranostic nanohybrid is designed for tumor induced imaging and potential combinational tumor therapy. The anti-tumor drug, Doxorubicin (DOX) is chemically conjugated to the poly(ethylenimine)-co-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEI-PEG) grafted GO via a MMP2-cleavable PLGLAG peptide linkage. The therapeutic efficacy of DOX is chemically locked and its intrinsic fluorescence is quenched by GO under normal physiological condition. Once stimulated by the MMP2 enzyme over-expressed in tumor tissues, the resulting peptide cleavage permits the unloading of DOX for tumor therapy and concurrent fluorescence recovery of DOX for in situ tumor cell imaging. Attractively, this PEI-bearing nanohybrid can mediate efficient DNA transfection and shows great potential for combinational drug/gene therapy. This tumor induced imaging and potential combinational therapy will open a window for tumor treatment by offering a unique theranostic approach through merging the diagnostic capability and pathology-responsive therapeutic function., (© 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Mitochondria are vital organelles to eukaryotic cells. Damage to mitochondria will cause irreversible cell death or apoptosis. In this report, we aim at programmed cancer cell death via specific mitochondrial damage. Herein, a functionalized pro-apoptotic peptide demonstrates a dual-targeting capability using folic acid (FA) (targeting agent I) and triphenylphosphonium (TPP) cation (targeting agent II). FA is a cancer-targeting agent, which can increase the cellular uptake of the pro-apoptotic peptide via receptor-mediated endocytosis. And the TPP cation is the mitochondrial targeting agent, which specifically delivers the pro-apoptotic peptide to its particular subcellular mitochondria after internalized by cancer cells. Then the pro-apoptotic peptide accumulates in mitochondria and causes its serious damage. This dual-targeting strategy has the potential to effectively transport the pro-apoptotic peptide to targeted cancer cell mitochondria, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and triggering the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis to efficiently eliminate cancer cells.

Soil washing is one of the few permanent treatment alternatives for removing metal contaminants. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its salts can substantially increase heavy metal removal from contaminated soils and have been extensively studied for soil washing. However, EDTA has a poor utilization ratio due to its low selectivity resulting from the competition between soil major cations and trace metal ions for chelation. The present study evaluated the potential for soil washing using EDTA and three of its derivatives: CDTA (trans-1,2-cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid), BDTA (benzyldiaminetetraacetic acid), and PDTA (phenyldiaminetetraacetic acid), which contain a cylcohexane ring, a benzyl group, and a phenyl group, respectively. Titration results showed that PDTA had the highest stability constants for Cu(2+) and Ni(2+) and the highest overall selectivity for trace metals over major cations. Equilibrium batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the EDTA derivatives at extracting Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+), Ca(2+), and Fe(3+) from a contaminated soil. At pH 7.0, PDTA extracted 1.5 times more Cu(2+) than did EDTA, but only 75% as much Ca(2+). Although CDTA was a strong chelator of heavy metal ions, its overall selectivity was lower and comparable to that of EDTA. BDTA was the least effective extractant because its stability constants with heavy metals were low. To develop a smart nanovalve on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) for biomedical applications, a new type of peptide-functionalized MSN with a plug-gate nanovalve (PGN) was designed for targeted drug release in cancer cells. The outer shell of MSN was functionalized with K 8 peptide (octa-lysine sequence) by click chemistry, followed by reacting with citraconic anhydride viaα,β-unsaturated bond to prepare negatively charged MSN-K 8 (Cit). Subsequently, a cationic K 8 (RGD) 2 peptide containing two Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequences for targeting was introduced via electrostatic interaction to the negatively charged surface of MSN-K 8 (Cit) to form PGN. It was found that, at pH 5.0 (simulating the endo/lysosomal environment), the surface charge of MSN-K 8 (Cit) could convert from -41 mV to +19 mV due to the hydrolysis of the acid-labile amides in the acidic condition, implying the subsequent electrostatic repulsion to induce opening of the nanovalves and release of anticancer drug, DOX. According to the drug release studies, 79% of DOX was released within 48 h at pH 5.0, while much less DOX was released at pH 6.5 and 7.4. Furthermore, in vitro cellular experiments confirmed that the drug delivery system had enhanced cellular association and cell inhibition effect on α v β 3 -positive U87 MG cancerous cells.

A novel strategy to construct a therapeutic system based on functionalized AuNPs which can specifically respond to tumor microenvironment was reported. In the therapeutic system, doxorubicin was conjugated to AuNPs via thiol-Au bond by using a peptide substrate, CPLGLAGG, which can be specifically cleaved by the protease. In vivo study shows that after injection of the functionalized AuNPs to the tumor-bearing mice, the over-expressed protease of MMP-2 in tumor tissue and intracellular GSH can lead to the rapid release of the anti-tumor drug (doxorubicin) from the functionalized AuNPs to inhibit tumor growth and realize fluorescently imaging simultaneously. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have proved to be an effective carrier for controlled drug release and can be functionalized easily for use as stimuli-responsive vehicles. Here, a novel intelligent drug-delivery system (DDS), camptothecin (CPT)-loaded and doxorubicin (DOX)-conjugated MSN (CPT@MSN-hyd-DOX), is reported via a facile one-pot preparation for use in synergistic chemotherapy of glioblastoma. DOX was conjugated to MSNs via acid-labile hydrazone bonds, and CPT was loaded in the pores of the MSNs. At pH 6.5 (analogous to the pH in tumor tissues), a fast DOX release was observed that was attributed to the hydrolysis of the hydrazone bonds. In addition, a further burst release of DOX was found at pH 5.0 (analogous to the pH in lyso/endosomes of tumor cells), leading to a strong synergistic effect. In all, CPT and DOX could be delivered simultaneously into tumor cells, and this intelligent DDS has great potential for tumor-trigged drug release for use in the synergistic chemotherapy of tumors.

Controlling the formation of large and homogeneous arrays of bionanostructures through the self-assembly approach is still a great challenge. Here, we report the spontaneous formation of highly ordered arrays based on aligned peptide nanostructures in a solution as well as at an interface by self-assembly. By controlling the time and temperature of self-assembly in the solution, parallel fibrous alignments and more sophisticated two-dimensional "knitted" fibrous arrays could be formed from aligned rod-like fibers. During the formation of such arrays, the "disorder-to-order" transitions are controlled by the temperature-responsible motile short hydrophobic tails of the gemini-like amphiphilic peptides (GAPs) with asymmetric molecular conformation. In addition, the resulting long-range-ordered "knitted" fibrous arrays are able to direct mineralization of calcium phosphate to form organic-inorganic composite materials. In this study, the self-assembly behavior of these peptide building blocks at an interface was also studied. Highly ordered spatial arrays with vertically or horizontally aligned nanostructures such as nanofibers, microfibers, and microtubes could be formed through interfacial assembly. The regular structures and their alignments on the interface are controlled by the alkyl chain length of building blocks and the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity property of the interface.

A novel type of cellular-uptake-shielding multifunctional envelope-type mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MEMSN) was designed for tumor-triggered targeting drug delivery to cancerous cells. β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) was anchored on the surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles via disulfide linking for glutathione-induced intracellular drug release. Then a peptide sequence containing Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) motif and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) substrate peptide Pro-Leu-Gly-Val-Arg (PLGVR) was introduced onto the surface of the nanoparticles via host-guest interaction. To protect the targeting ligand and prevent the nanoparticles from being uptaken by normal cells, the nanoparticles were further decorated with poly(aspartic acid) (PASP) to obtain MEMSN. In vitro study demonstrated that MEMSN was shielded against normal cells. After reaching the tumor cells, the targeting property could be switched on by removing the PASP protection layer via hydrolyzation of PLGVR at the MMP-rich tumor cells, which enabled the easy uptake of drug-loaded nanoparticles by tumor cells and subsequent glutathione-induced drug release intracellularly.
