1. Magnetic structure and multiferroicity of Sc-substituted hexagonal YbFeO$_3$

Abstract

Hexagonal rare-earth ferrite RFeO$_3$ family represents a unique class of multiferroics exhibiting weak ferromagnetism, and a strong coupling between magnetism and structural trimerization is predicted. However, the hexagonal structure for RFeO$_3$ remains metastable in conventional condition. We have succeeded in stabilizing the hexagonal structure of polycrystalline YbFeO$_3$ by partial Sc substitution of Yb. Using bulk magnetometry and neutron diffraction, we find that Yb$_{0.42}$Sc$_{0.58}$FeO$_3$ orders into a canted antiferromagnetic state with the Neel temperature $T_N$ ~ 165 K, below which the $Fe^{3+}$ moments form the triangular configuration in the $ab$-plane and their in-plane projections are parallel to the [100] axis, consistent with magnetic space group $P$6$_{3}$$c'm'$. It is determined that the spin-canting is aligned along the $c$-axis, giving rise to the weak ferromagnetism. Furthermore, the $Fe^{3+}$ moments reorient toward a new direction below reorientation temperature $T_R$ ~ 40 K, satisfying magnetic subgroup $P$6$_{3}$, while the $Yb^{3+}$ moments order independently and ferrimagnetically along the $c$-axis at the characteristic temperature $T_{Yb}$ ~ 15 K. Interestingly, reproducible modulation of electric polarization induced by magnetic field at low temperature is achieved, suggesting that the delicate structural distortion associated with two-up/one-down buckling of the Yb/Sc-planes and tilting of the FeO$_5$ bipyramids may mediate the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic orders under magnetic field. The present work represents a substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in hexagonal ferrites and related materials.

Abstract

The structural evolution of the strain-driven morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in BiFeO3 films has been investigated using synchrotron x-ray diffractometry in conjunction with scanning probe microscopy. Our results demonstrate the existence of mixed-phase regions that are mainly made up of two heavily tilted ferroelectric triclinic phases. Analysis of first-principles computations suggests that these two triclinic phases originate from a phase separation of a single monoclinic state accompanied by elastic matching between the phase-separated states. These first-principle calculations further reveal that the intrinsic piezoelectric response of these two low-symmetry triclinic phases is not significantly large, which thus implies that the ease of phase transition between these two energetically close triclinic phases is likely responsible for the large piezoelectric response found in the BiFeO3 films near its MPB. These findings not only enrich the understandings of the lattice and domain structure of epitaxial BiFeO3 films but may also shed some light on the origin of enhanced piezoelectric response near MPB., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures and 1 table

Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. Abstract

This article is the 14th in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein we report 98 taxa distributed in two phyla, seven classes, 26 orders and 50 families which are described and illustrated. Taxa in this study were collected from Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, China, Cyprus, Egypt, France, French Guiana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Laos, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 59 new taxa, 39 new hosts and new geographical distributions with one new combination. Abstract

This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera incertae sedis are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. Fungal taxa described and illustrated in the present study include three new genera, 69 new species, one new combination, one reference specimen and 51 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions. Three new genera, Cylindrotorula (Torulaceae), Scolecoleotia (Leotiales genus incertae sedis) and Xenovaginatispora (Lindomycetaceae) are introduced based on distinct phylogenetic lineages and unique morphologies. 10. Anomalous thickness-dependent strain states and strain-tunable magnetization in Zn-doped ferrite epitaxial films.

Abstract

A series of ZnxFe3-xO4 (ZFO, x=0.4) thin films were epitaxially deposited on single-crystal (001)-SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The anomalous thickness-dependent strain states of ZFO films were found, i.e., a tensile in-plane strain exists in the thinner ZFO film and which monotonously turns into compressive in the thicker films. Considering the lattice constant of bulk ZFO is bigger than that of STO, this strain state cannot be explained in the conventional framework of lattice-mismatch-induced strain in the hetero-epitaxial system. This unusual phenomenon is proposed to be closely related to the Volmer-Weber film growth mode in the thinner films and incorporation of the interstitial atoms into the island's boundaries during subsequent epitaxial growth of the thicker films. The ZFO/STO epitaxial film is found in the nature of magnetic semiconductor by transport measurements. The in-plane magnetization of the ZFO/STO films is found to increase as the in-plane compressive strain develops, which is further proved in the (001)-ZFO/PMN-PT film where the film strain state can be in situ controlled with applied electric field. This compressive-strain-enhanced magnetization can be attributed to the strain-mediated electric-field-induced in-plane magnetic anisotropy field enhancement. 11. Sevoflurane induction alleviates the progression of gastric cancer by upregulating the miR-34a/TGIF2 axis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to elucidate how sevoflurane affects the malignant progression of gastric cancer (GC) and its pharmacological mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dose-dependent and time-dependent regulations of sevoflurane on proliferation inhibition rate in AGS and BGC-823 cells were examined, and thus the optimal dose and treatment time of sevoflurane on GC cells were selected. Subsequently, proliferative and migratory abilities in sevoflurane-induced AGS and BGC-823 cells (3.4% sevoflurane induction for 6 h) were detected by CCK8 and transwell assay, respectively. After sevoflurane induction, relative levels of miR-34a and TGIF2 in GC cells were determined by qRT-PCR and Western blot. Regulatory effects of miR-34a on GC cell phenotypes were also assessed. Furthermore, the in vivo function of miR-34a in GC growth was explored by generating xenografted GC in nude mice. RESULTS: Sevoflurane induction time-dependently and dose-dependently enhanced proliferation inhibition rate in AGS and BGC-823 cells. The proliferative and migratory abilities in GC cells induced with 3.4% sevoflurane for 6 h were markedly attenuated. sevoflurane induction upregulated miR-34a, but downregulated TGIF2 in GC cells. TGIF2 was negatively regulated by miR-34a. Notably, overexpression of miR34a inhibited proliferative and migratory abilities in sevoflurane-induced GC cells, and knockdown of miR-34a yielded the opposite results. In nude mice with xenografted GC tissues, sevoflurane treatment markedly reduced tumorigenic ability, which was improved by knockdown of miR-34a. CONCLUSIONS: Sevoflurane weakens proliferative and migratory abilities in GC by upregulating miR-34a and downregulating TGIF2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High-resolution 3-Dimensional Reciprocal Space Mapping (3D-RSM) has been performed on mixed-phase BiFeO3 (BFO) epitaxial films on (001)-oriented LaAlO3 substrates. Our results demonstrate that 3D-RSM is an effective way to present a structural overview of the different BFO polymorphs, domain variants, and even the interfacial regions between coexisting triclinic phases. The dislocation-free boundaries between the triclinic phases revealed by these 3D-RSMs are believed to be responsible for the large electromechanical response found in mixed-phase BFO films. Abstract

A parallel solution combustion synthesis technique was developed for combinatorial materials studies. The vigorous combustion reactions were successfully limited in the microreactors by using a substrate−net−mask microreactor system and the lowest adoptable furnace temperature. Using this technique, a luminescent materials library of Y3Al5O12/Tbx was synthesized with the aid of an ink-jet delivery system. Structure and luminescence characterizations were implemented using X-ray diffraction and UV/X-ray spectroscopies, respectively. The results show that this technique is reliable and applicable to combinatorial study of powder materials with high synthesis temperature.

Abstract

Multiferroic (001)-Zn0.4Fe2.6O4/0.7Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (ZFO/PMN-PT) epitaxial heterostructures have been investigated to demonstrate the electric-field-controlled resistance and magnetization switching. The tunabilitiy of resistance of the ZFO film is about -0.1% under the in-plane strain -0.02% at 296 K and 0.2% for the electric field 1.0 kV/cm at 80 K, respectively, and the tunabilitiy of magnetization is about 1.1% under the in-plane strain -0.11% at 296 K, which is attributed to the controllable strain transferred into the ZFO film from the piezoelectric PMN-PT substrate. A possible microscopic mechanism of the manipulation of resistance and magnetization is the enhancement of hopping amplitude of electrons between mixed-valent Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions under the electric-field-induced in-plane compressive strain. Abstract

We report a large and nonvolatile bipolar-electric-field-controlled magnetization at room temperature in a Co40Fe40B20/Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 structure, which exhibits an electric-field-controlled looplike magnetization. Investigations on the ferroelectric domains and crystal structures with in situ electric fields reveal that the effect is related to the combined action of 109° ferroelastic domain switching and the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Co40Fe40B20. Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effect of bispherical augment in acetabular defects reconstruction in hip revision. Methods: This is a retrospective case series study. A retrospective analysis of 119 patients (124 hips) patients who underwent hip revision surgery and reconstructed with bispherical augment for acetabular bone defects from January 2019 to December 2023 was performed. There were 57 males (58 hips) and 62 females (66 hips), aged (65.0±11.8) years (range:40 to 102 years). The body mass index was (23.9±3.5) kg/m 2 (range:16.1 to 32.2 kg/m 2 ). Acetabular bone defects were typed as follows: 2 hips in Paprosky type ⅡA, 29 hips in type ⅡB, 34 hips in type ⅡC, 31 hips in type ⅢA, and 28 hips in type ⅢB, of which 9 patients (9 hips) were combined with pelvic discontinuity. Differences in Harris hip score (HHS) and lower limb discrepancy (LLD) were compared between preoperatively and final follow-up. The height of the hip center of rotation and the horizontal distance from the center of rotation to the teardrop were measured by radiographs before and after surgery, and prothesis stability and the occurrence of postoperative complications were evaluated. Data were compared using the paired sample t test. Results: All patients successfully completed the operation. The operation time was (167.0±53.4) minutes (range:90 to 380 minutes) and the intraoperative bleeding was (345.3±124.2) ml (range:100 to 1 200 ml). The height of the hip center of rotation decreased from (39.7±13.0) mm preoperatively to (21.8±7.1) mm postoperatively and the horizontal distance from the center of rotation to the teardrop increased from (34.0±10.1) mm preoperatively to (38.5±5.9) mm postoperatively, and the differences were statistically significant ( t =15.859, P <0.01; t =5.266, P <0.01). All the patients were followed up for (26.1±15.4) months (range:6 to 60 months). At the last follow-up, HHS improved from (35.2±10.0) points preoperatively to (85.5±9.5) points, and the difference was statistically significant ( t =50.723, P <0.01). LLD decreased from (2.1±1.1) cm preoperatively to (0.5±0.5) cm, and the difference was statistically significant ( t =13.767, P <0.01). All acetabular components were stable and free of displacement on imaging during follow-up. Three patients suffered dislocation and received closed reduction, all prosthesis were in good position during follow-up. No dislocation, loosening, fracture, recurrence of infection and vascular nerve injury occurred in other patients. Conclusion: Bispherical augment can effectively reconstruct acetabular bone defects, restore the hip center of rotation, and improve hip joint function scores at short and mid-term follow-up.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair guided by only transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Methods: Patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation in Fuwai Yunnan Cardiovascular Hospital who met the inclusion criteria based on clinical and echocardiographic evaluationand underwent transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair between January 2022 and May 2023 were prospectively enrolled. The procedure was performed under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation and solely guided by TEE. The patients underwent clinical evaluation, electrocardiogram and transthoracic echocardiography one month after the procedure. Results: A total of 22 patients (12 males and 10 females) were included, with an average age of (71.3±6.7) years. All 22 patients successfully underwent the transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair under TEE guidance, with an average of (1.5±0.6) clips implanted. Immediately after procedure, six patients had no or trace regurgitation, 15 patients had mild regurgitation, and one patient had moderate regurgitation. All 22 patients completed 30-day follow-up, with four patients having trace regurgitation, 17 patients having mild regurgitation, and one patient having moderate regurgitation. Echocardiographic measurements revealed that effective regurgitant orifice area, regurgitant volume, vena contracta width, and proximal isovelocity surface area radius significantly decreased after the procedure (all P <0.05). In addition, inferior vena cava width, right atrial volume, tricuspid annular diameter, and right ventricular end-diastolic diameter significantly improved (all P <0.05), but tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and right ventricular fractional area change did not show significant differences compared with those before the procedure (both P> 0.05). Conclusion: It has been preliminarily confirmed that transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair solely guided by TEE is feasible and safe, but requires more large-scale studies for further validation.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate and compare the short-term efficacy of domestic mechanical-locked (Clip2Edge) and elastic self-locked (ValveClip) transcranial mitral valve edge-to-edge interventional repair (TEER) devices in the treatment of functional mitral regurgitant valves. Methods: In this retrospective non-randomized comparative study, patients underwent TEER procedure in Fuwai Yunnan Cardiovascular Disease Hospital from May 2022 to April 2023 for heart failure combined with moderate to severe or severe functional mitral valve were divided into Clip2Edge and ValveClip groups based on the TEER system used. Baseline, perioperative, and postoperative 30 d follow-up data were collected and compared between the two groups. The primary outcome was the success rate on the 30 d post operation, while secondary outcomes included immediate postoperative technical success rate and the incidence of all-cause mortality on the 30 d post operation, readmission rate of acute heart failure, cerebral infarction, severe bleeding, and other serious adverse events rates. Results: A total of 60 patients were enrolled, 34 patients were in the Clip2Edge group and 26 in the ValveClip group, mean age was (63.8±9.3) years, and 24 patients (40%) were female. There were no significant differences in baseline data of age, cardiac function, comorbidities, mitral regurgitation 4+(19(73%) vs. 29(85%)), the end-diastolic volume of left ventricle ((220.8±91.2) ml vs. (210.8±71.7) ml) between the two groups (all P> 0.05). The technical success rate immediately after the procedure was 100%. There were no readmission of acute heart failure, death, cerebral infarction, severe bleeding, and other serious adverse events up to the 30 d follow-up. Device success rate was similar between the ValveClip group (24 cases (100%)) and the Clip2Edge group (27 cases (96%)) ( P >0.05). Conclusion: Both types of novel domestic TEER devices are safe and feasible in treating patients with functional mitral regurgitation.

Abstract

Objective: To explore the current situation of fetal heart defects in Yunnan Province and surrounding high altitude areas and the social factors affecting pregnancy outcome. Methods: This is a retrospective study. Pregnant woman who underwent fetal echocardiography and diagnosed as fetal cardiac defects in Yunnan Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital from June 2017 to January 2021 were included. According to the clinical prognostic risk scoring system and grading criteria of fetal cardiac birth defects, the cases were divided into grade Ⅰ to Ⅳ. The disease distribution and proportion of each prognostic grade, pregnancy outcomes were analyzed and compared. The cases were divided into continued pregnancy group and terminated pregnancy group according to pregnancy outcome. The social factors that may affect the selection of pregnancy outcomes were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 4 929 fetal echocardiography examination data were collected, and 4 464 cases (90.57%) were from Yunnan Province and surrounding high altitude areas. 2 166 cases of heart defects were finally analyzed, including 998 cases of congenital heart disease (CHD), 93 cases of cardiac tumors, cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia, 1 075 cases of foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus abnormalities and normal variations. The pregnant women were (29.2±5.0) years old with (25.6±3.8) gestational weeks. The number of cases with prognostic grade from Ⅰ to Ⅳ was 1 037 (47.88%), 620 (28.62%), 314 (14.50%), and 44 (2.03%), respectively. And 151 cases (6.97%) were not classified. The cases of normal variation and thin aortic arch development accounted for 42.66% (924/2 166), 5.22% (113/2 166), respectively. The top 3 diseases of grade Ⅱ were ventricular septal defect, coarctation of aorta and mild-moderate pulmonary stenosis, respectively, and their distribution was 11.63% (252/2 166), 3.92% (85/2 166) and 2.35% (51/2 166) respectively in all cases of heart defects, and 25.25% (252/998), 8.52% (85/998) and 5.11% (51/998) respectively in cases of CHD. Among the cases rated as grade Ⅲ and Ⅳ, most of them were complicated congenital heart disease, and the disease types are scattered. The more common cases in grade Ⅲ were complete transposition of great arteries (accounting for 2.40% (52/2 166) of all cases with heart defects, 5.21% (52/998) of all cases with CHD) and pulmonary artery occlusion (type Ⅰ to Ⅲ) with ventricular septal defect (accounting for 2.17% (47/2 166) of all cases with heart defects, and 4.71% (47/998) of all cases with CHD). In grade Ⅳ, single ventricle (0.74% (16/2 166) of all cases with heart defects, 1.60% (16/998) of all cases with CHD) and left ventricular dysplasia syndrome (0.65% (14/2 166) of all cases with heart defects, 1.40% (14/998) of all cases with CHD) are more common. A total of 1 084 cases were successfully followed up, and 675 cases were born, 392 cases were terminated, spontaneous abortion occurred in 17 cases. The proportion of terminated pregnancy cases was significantly increased from grade Ⅰ to Ⅳ, accounting for 5.24% (21/401), 27.78% (70/252), 89.54% (214/239) and 95.56% (43/45), respectively. Among the terminated pregnancy cases, those with grade Ⅲ accounted for the highest proportion (54.59% (214/392)). The distribution of terminated pregnancy cases was mainly complex congenital malformations or diseases with very poor prognosis (pregnancy outcome grade Ⅲ and Ⅳ), and proportion of terminated pregnancy with pregnancy outcome grade Ⅰ and Ⅱ cases (normal variation or good prognosis) accounted for 5.36% (21/392) and 17.86% (70/392), respectively. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that pregnant women with low education (high school and below: OR =2.73, 95% CI 1.26-5.93, P <0.001; illiteracy: OR =3.27, 95% CI 1.29-7.10, P <0.001) and low family income (Annual income<100 000 yuan: OR =2.47, 95% CI 1.69-5.12, P <0.001) were more likely to choose termination of pregnancy in case of fetal heart defect. Conclusion: In Yunnan province and the surrounding high altitude areas, the disease distribution of fetal heart defect is mainly simple or low-risk disease, but the complex malformation, especially the disease with poor pregnancy outcome, accounts for a relative high proportion. Pregnancy termination also occurs in some cases with good pregnancy outcome. The education level and family income of pregnant women may affect their choice of pregnancy outcome in case of fetal heart defect.

38. [Minimally invasive small incision direct anterior total hip arthroplasty in the lateral decubitus position: complications and early outcome].

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the feasibility, perioperative complications and early outcomes of minimally invasive small incision in direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty in lateral decubitus position. Methods: From January 2015 to January 2017, 212 patients (228 hips) received minimally invasive small incision (approximately 8 cm in length) direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty in modified lateral decubitus position and approach. Sixteen cases underwent bilateral hip arthroplasty separately. All procedures were performed by the same surgeon in the Department of Orthopedics, the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China, Anhui Provincial Hospital. Twenty-eight patients (28 hips) were set as the complicated case group. The rest 184 patients (200 hips) had no previous hip surgeries, severe deformity and limited motion of the hip, were set as the standard group, and were divided into the first 100 cases group and the second 100 cases group in sequence. The difference between the standard group and complicated case group were analyzed. Also we compared the difference between the first 100 cases and the second 100 cases. Perioperative complications, postoperative function and radiological evaluation were recorded and statistically analyzed. The t test was applied to compare the data between groups. Results: All the patients were followed-up for 13 to 25 months[(18±5) months]. Intraoperative complications and postoperative complications happened in 9 and 34 patients respectively. The anterior dislocation occurred in 2 cases. The standard group showed significant superior outcomes when compared with complicated case group in the surgical time[(42±19) vs (67±16) min, t =-2.628, P =0.027], blood loss[(222±94) vs (579±120) ml, t =-8.371, P =0.000], postoperative Harris hip score[90±5 vs 83±7, t =2.390, P =0.024]and the rate of surgical complication (15.0% vs 46.4%, χ(2)=15.854, P =0.000). The complication rate tended to decrease in the second 100 cases when compared with that in the first 100 cases (11.0% vs 19.0%, χ(2)=3.922, P =0.037). Meanwhile, the second 100 cases showed significant excellent outcomes when compared with the first 100 cases in the mean surgical time[(34±15) vs (48±10) min, t =4.217, P =0.002]and blood loss[(182±52) vs (254±40) ml, t =2.889, P =0.018]. Conclusions: It suggests that there is a learning curve with the minimally invasive small incision direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty in lateral decubitus position. The risk of intraoperative femoral fractures is slightly high, especially for cases with osteoporosis, stiffness and limited range of movement. Surgeons in early learning curve period should grasp the surgical indications and master the technical points.

Objective: To investigate the human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) expression in esophagogastirc junction adenocarcinoma(Siewert type Ⅱ)and its clinical significance., Methods: A total of 180 patients with esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma (Siewert type Ⅱ) were included in this study. The HER-2 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC), and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis was performed to assess the HER-2 gene amplification in the IHC-positive and IHC-weak positive cases., Results: HER-2 overexpression (3+ ), weak positive (2+ ) and negative (1+ /0) was 11.7%(21/180), 8.9%(16/180), and 79.4%(143/180), respectively. The FISH analysis showed HER-2 gene amplification in 95.2%(20/21) of HER-2(3+ ) cases and 18.8% (3/16) of HER-2(2+ ) cases. The concordance rate between IHC and FISH was 95.2%. Overexpression of HER-2(3+ ) was associated with the tumor differentiation (P<0.05), and irrelevant to age, sex, pT stage, pN stage, pM stage and pTNM stage (P>0.05). The median overall survival time (OS) was 13 months in HER-2(3+ ) patients, significantly shorter than the 21 months in HER-2(2+ ) and HER-2(+ /-) cases (P<0.01)., Conclusions: Approximately 11.7% of the patients with esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma (Siewert type Ⅱ) are HER-2-positive on IHC. HER-2 overexpression is associated with the tumor differentiation. IHC can be used as a screening test for the positive expression of HER-2 in the esophagogastirc junction adenocarcinoma (Siewert type Ⅱ). However, FISH detection can be used as a more reliable detection method.

Abstract

Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy of the direct anterior approach (DAA) and the posterolateral approach (PLA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the lateral decubitus position. Methods: From July to December, 2014, 104 patients randomly divided into two equal groups of the DAA group and the PLA group underwent unilateral primary THA procedures.All procedures were performed by the same surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedics, the Affiliated Anhui Provincial Hospital of Anhui Medical University.General data, perioperative index, postoperative function and radiological evaluation were recorded and statistically analyzed. Results: The patients had an average follow-up of 14 (range, 10-16) months.No significant differences were detected with respect to the operation time, incision length, preoperative Hb concentration and transfusion rate between two groups ( P > 0.05 for all comparisons). However, there were significant differences associated with the intraoperative bleeding, postoperative drainage and postoperative Hb concentration in the two groups( P <0.05 for all comparisons). The DAA group showed significant superior outcomes compared with the PLA group in the Harris hip scores [(83.6±7.1) vs (79.8±6.6), P <0.05], WOMAC[ (28.9±6.1) vs (36.1±6.9), P <0.001], and VAS pain scores[ (2.2±0.9) vs (2.9±1.1), P <0.05]at 1 month after surgery. No differences were seen between the study groups in the evaluation of radiography and the incidence of adverse event ( P > 0.05 for all comparisons). Conclusions: Compared with the posterolateral approach, the present study shows the exciting results in patients underwent the DAA THA in the lateral decubitus position at early follow-up.The advantages of THA using the DAA include less operative trauma, alleviation of postoperative pain, and faster postoperative rehabilitation. It is a safe, reliable and effective surgery approach.

Abstract

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth abnormality, but the etiology of CHD is unknown. ISL1 may play a fundamental role in cardiac morphogenesis, and mutations of this gene could cause CHD. To evaluate whether genetic variations of ISL1 are associated with CHD in Chinese Han people, polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment-length polymorphism and SNaPshot were used to examine 9 polymorphisms of ISL1 in 233 patients with CHD as well as 288 healthy controls. We found that one SNP (rs1017) in ISL1 was significantly associated with simple CHD. Genetic variation of ISL1 was confirmed to be associated with the risk of CHD. ISL1 is related to the atrial septal defect group and the ventricular septal defect group, and the genotypes were associated with the occurrence of CHD in the dominant mode of inheritance. We concluded that rs1017 contributed to the risk of CHD in Chinese Han people, and ISL1 may be involved in the formation and development of the heart.

Abstract

We report a large and nonvolatile bipolar-electric-field-controlled magnetization at room temperature in a Co(40)Fe(40)B(20)/Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))(0.7)Ti(0.3)O(3) structure, which exhibits an electric-field-controlled looplike magnetization. Investigations on the ferroelectric domains and crystal structures with in situ electric fields reveal that the effect is related to the combined action of 109° ferroelastic domain switching and the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Co(40)Fe(40)B(20). This work provides a route to realize large and nonvolatile magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature and is significant for applications.

Abstract

The coronavirus peplomer protein S is responsible for attachment and fusion during viral entry as well as for the induction of cell to cell fusion. While several regions within S have been shown to influence the ability to induce fusion, the region of the protein actually responsible for fusion, the fusion peptide, has not yet been identified. We identified two hydrophobic peptides (peptides #1 and #2) within MHV-A59 S2 as possible fusion domains. This was based on hydrophobicity, conservation among coronavirus S proteins and the prediction of a sided helix conformation. Using site directed mutagenesis and an in vitro cell to cell fusion assay we showed that substitution of hydrophobic amino acids with charged amino acids, within the predicted hydrophobic face of either of these two peptides eliminated fusion. Within peptide #1 substitution of the same hydrophobic amino acids with other hydrophobic amino acids or substitution of polar amino acids with charged or polar amino acids had little effect on fusion. Thus peptides #1 and #2 remain likely candidates for the MHV fusion peptide. A third previously identified peptide within S2 (Chambers et al., 1990) is unlikely as a fusion peptide as it is not well conserved among coronaviruses and substitution within the hydrophobic face with charged amino acids does not effect fusion.

Abstract

In this study,the surface protein P(1) of Streptococcus mutans MT(6)R(Serotype C) was extracted from the culture supernants,purified by PAGE,identified by the standard antisera and labelled by with (131)I.The adherence of (131)I protein P(1)((131)I-P(1)) to the saliva-coated hydroxyaptite (S-HA) of the CF (caries-free,22,DFS=0) were studied.The adhesion of (131)I-P(1) to the S-HA promoted a greater extent than that to the HA treated with buffer and bovine serum albumin(P<0.01).This result suggested that protein P(1) may be one of the important adhesins of S.mutans.

Abstract

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for measuring IgA antibody to whole cell of Streptococcus mutans (serotype c) in saliva. 36 parotid salivary samples of human were collected from two groups: Caries free (CF) and caries sensitive (CS). The result shows that the IgA antibody to S. mutans in CF group was higher than those in CS group (P < 0.05). The saliva antibody was gained from the rabbits by injection with S. mutans (serotype c), and the adhesion of S. mutans--3H on the surface of hydroxylapatite beads treated by rabbit's saliva was measured. The results show that the saliva with immunity could inhibit the S. mutans to adhere on the HA beads (P < 0.05). It means saliva antibody may prevent caries through inhibition of S. mutans from adhesion.

Abstract

The effect of specific immune RNA (i-RNA) on the activity of natural killer (NK) cells in the peripheral blood of 27 newborn infants was studied by lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were used as effector cells with K-562 tumour cells as target cells. The results showed that in the therapeutic group (n = 17) the average activity of NK cells after therapy (24.13 +/- 4.62%) was 13.67 +/- 5.79% higher than before therapy (10.47 +/- 3.57%). In the control group (n = 10) these were only 10.78 +/- 3.94% and 11.58 +/- 3.37%, the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). However, NK activity in the therapeutic group and control group was markedly different (P < 0.01). The data indicate that specific i-RNA can enhance the activity of NK cells in the peripheral blood of newborn infants. Therefore, we believe that specific i-RNA may play an important role in defence against CMV infection. The mechanism of i-RNA augmenting NK cellular activity is also discussed.
