Moir\'e magnetism, parallel with moir\'e electronics that has led to novel correlated and topological electronic states, emerges as a new venue to design and control exotic magnetic phases in twisted magnetic two-dimensional(2D) crystals. Here, we report direct evidence of noncollinear spin texture in 2D twisted double bilayer (tDB) magnet chromium triiodide (CrI$_3$). Using magneto-optical spectroscopy in tDB CrI$_3$, we revealed the presence of a net magnetization, unexpected from the composing antiferromagnetic bilayers with compensated magnetizations, and the emergence of noncollinear spins, originated from the moir\'e exchange coupling-induced spin frustrations. Exploring the twist angle dependence, we demonstrated that both features are present in tDB CrI$_3$ with twist angles from 0.5$^o$ to 5$^o$, but are most prominent in the 1.1$^o$ tDB CrI$_3$. Focusing on the temperature dependence of the 1.1$^o$ tDB CrI$_3$, we resolved the dramatic suppression in the net magnetization onset temperature and the significant softening of noncollinear spins, as a result of the moir\'e induced frustration. Our results demonstrate the power of moir\'e superlattices in introducing novel magnetic phenomena that are absent in natural 2D magnets.

We show the ferro-rotational nature of the commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) in $1T$-$\mathrm{TaS}_2$ and track its dynamic modulations by temperature-dependent and time-resolved electric quadrupole rotation anisotropy-second harmonic generation (EQ RA-SHG), respectively. The ultrafast modulations manifest as the breathing and the rotation of the EQ RA-SHG patterns at three frequencies around the reported single CCDW amplitude mode frequency. A sudden shift of the triplet frequencies and a dramatic increase in the breathing and rotation magnitude further reveal a photo-induced transient CDW phase across a critical pump fluence of ~ 0.5 mJ/cm$^2$.

Twist engineering, or the alignment of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline layers with desired orientations, has led to tremendous success in modulating the charge degree of freedom in hetero- and homo-structures, in particular, in achieving novel correlated and topological electronic phases in moir\'e electronic crystals. However, although pioneering theoretical efforts have predicted nontrivial magnetism and magnons out of twisting 2D magnets, experimental realization of twist engineering spin degree of freedom remains elusive. Here, we leverage the archetypal 2D Ising magnet chromium triiodide (CrI3) to fabricate twisted double bilayer homostructures with tunable twist angles and demonstrate the successful twist engineering of 2D magnetism in them. Using linear and circular polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy, we identify magneto-Raman signatures of a new magnetic ground state that is sharply distinct from those in natural bilayer (2L) and four-layer (4L) CrI3. With careful magnetic field and twist angle dependence, we reveal that, for a very small twist angle (~ 0.5 degree), this emergent magnetism can be well-approximated by a weighted linear superposition of those of 2L and 4L CI3 whereas, for a relatively large twist angle (~ 5 degree), it mostly resembles that of isolated 2L CrI3. Remarkably, at an intermediate twist angle (~ 1.1 degree), its magnetism cannot be simply inferred from the 2L and 4L cases, because it lacks sharp spin-flip transitions that are present in 2L and 4L CrI3 and features a dramatic Raman circular dichroism that is absent in natural 2L and 4L ones. Our results demonstrate the possibility of designing and controlling the spin degree of freedom in 2D magnets using twist engineering.

Compelling evidence suggests distinct correlated electron behavior may exist only in clean 2D materials such as 1T-TaS2. Unfortunately, experiment and theory suggest that extrinsic disorder in free standing 2D layers disrupts correlation-driven quantum behavior. Here we demonstrate a route to realizing fragile 2D quantum states through endotaxial polytype engineering of van der Waals materials. The true isolation of 2D charge density waves (CDWs) between metallic layers stabilizes commensurate long-range order and lifts the coupling between neighboring CDW layers to restore mirror symmetries via interlayer CDW twinning. The twinned-commensurate charge density wave (tC-CDW) reported herein has a single metal--insulator phase transition at ~350 K as measured structurally and electronically. Fast in-situ transmission electron microscopy and scanned nanobeam diffraction map the formation of tC-CDWs. This work introduces endotaxial polytype engineering of van der Waals materials to access latent 2D ground states distinct from conventional 2D fabrication.

We use a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy experiment and model magnetism-phonon coupling calculations to study the rich magneto-Raman effect in the two-dimensional (2D) magnet $\mathrm{CrI_3}$. We reveal a novel layered-magnetism-assisted phonon scattering mechanism below the magnetic onset temperature, whose Raman excitation breaks time-reversal symmetry, has an antisymmetric Raman tensor, and follows the magnetic phase transitions across critical magnetic fields, on top of the presence of the conventional phonon scattering with symmetric Raman tensors in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$. We resolve in data and by calculations that the 1st-order $A_g$ phonon of monolayer splits into a $N$-fold multiplet in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$ due to the interlayer coupling ($N$>=2) and that the phonons with the multiple show distinct magnetic field dependence because of their different layered-magnetism-phonon coupling. We further find that such a layered-magnetism-phonon coupled Raman scattering mechanism extends beyond 1st-order to higher-order multi-phonon scattering processes. Our results on magneto-Raman effect of the 1st-order phonons in the multiplet and the higher-order multi-phonons in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$ demonstrate the rich and strong behavior of emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets and underlines the unique opportunities of new spin-phonon physics in van der Waals layered magnets., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures + supplementary material

Exciton dynamics can be strongly affected by lattice vibrations through electron-phonon coupling. This is rarely explored in two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors. Focusing on bilayer CrI3, we first show the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling through temperature-dependent photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy. We then report the observation of periodic broad modes up to the 8th order in Raman spectra, attributed to the polaronic character of excitons. We establish that this polaronic character is dominated by the coupling between the charge-transfer exciton at 1.96 eV and a longitudinal optical phonon at 120.6 cm-1. We further show that the emergence of long-range magnetic order enhances the electron-phonon coupling strength by about 50$\%$ and that the transition from layered antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order tunes the spectral intensity of the periodic broad modes, suggesting a strong coupling among the lattice, charge and spin in two-dimensional CrI3. Exploring new parameter regimes to realize and control novel phases of matter has been a main theme in modern condensed matter physics research. The recent discovery of 2D magnetism in nearly freestanding monolayer atomic crystals has already led to observations of a number of novel magnetic phenomena absent in bulk counterparts. Such intricate interplays between magnetism and crystalline structures provide ample opportunities for exploring quantum phase transitions in this new 2D parameter regime. Here, using magnetic field and temperature dependent circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy of phonons and magnons, we map out the phase diagram of CrI3 that has been known to be a layered AFM in its 2D films and a FM in its 3D bulk. We, however, reveal a novel mixed state of layered AFM and FM in 3D CrI3 bulk crystals where the layered AFM survives in the surface layers and the FM appears in deeper bulk layers. We then show that the surface layered AFM transits into the FM at a critical magnetic field of 2 T, similar to what was found in the few layer case. Interestingly, concurrent with this magnetic phase transition, we discover a first-order structural phase transition that alters the crystallographic point group from C3i to C2h and thus, from a symmetry perspective, this monoclinic structural phase belongs to the 3D nematic order universality class. Our result not only unveils the complex single magnon behavior in 3D CrI3, but also settles down the puzzle of how CrI3 transits from a bulk FM to a thin layered AFM semiconductor, despite recent efforts in understanding the origin of layered AFM in CrI3 thin layer, and reveals the intimate relationship between the layered AFM-to-FM and the crystalline rhombohedral-to-monoclinic phase transitions. These findings further open up opportunities for future 2D magnet-based magneto-mechanical devices.

Using resonant X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we study charge correlations and lattice dynamics in two model cuprates, HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+\delta}$ and HgBa$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{6+\delta}$. We observe a maximum of the characteristic charge order temperature around the same hole concentration ($p \approx 0.09$) in both compounds, and concomitant pronounced anomalies in the lattice dynamics that involve the motion of atoms in and/or adjacent to the CuO$_2$ layers. These anomalies are already present at room temperature, and therefore precede the formation of the static charge correlations, and we attribute them to an instability of the CuO$_2$ layers. We report the successful synthesis of single-crystalline cuprate superconductors HgBa$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{6+\delta}$ and HgBa$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{8+\delta}$. These compounds are well-known for their high optimal superconducting critical temperatures of $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 128 K and 134 K at ambient pressure, respectively, and for their challenging synthesis. Using a conventional quartz-tube encapsulation method and a two-layer encapsulation method that utilizes custom-built high-pressure furnaces, we are able to grow single crystals with linear dimensions up to several millimeters parallel to the CuO$_2$ planes. Extended post-growth anneals are shown to lead to sharp superconducting transitions, indicative of high macroscopic homogeneity. X-ray diffraction and polarized Raman spectroscopy are identified as viable methods to resolve the seemingly unavoidable inter-growth of the two compounds.
