The aim of this paper is to categorize and describe different types of learners in massive open online courses (MOOCs) by means of a subgroup discovery approach based on MapReduce. The final objective is to discover IF-THEN rules that appear in different MOOCs. The proposed subgroup discovery approach, which is an extension of the well-known FP-Growth algorithm, considers emerging parallel methodologies like MapReduce to be able to cope with extremely large datasets. As an additional feature, the proposal includes a threshold value to denote the number of courses that each discovered rule should satisfy. A post-processing step is also included so redundant subgroups can be removed. The experimental stage is carried out by considering de-identified data from the first year of 16 MITx and HarvardX courses on the edX platform. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MapReduce approach outperforms traditional sequential subgroup discovery approaches, achieving a runtime that is almost constant for different courses. Additionally, thanks to the final post-processing step, only interesting and not-redundant rules are discovered, hence reducing the number of subgroups in one or two orders of magnitude. Finally, the discovered subgroups are easily used by courses' instructors not only for descriptive purposes but also for additional tasks such as recommendation or personalization.

Separating C6 cyclic hydrocarbons, specifically benzene and cyclohexane, presents a significant industrial challenge due to their similar physicochemical properties. We conducted Monte Carlo simulations in the Grand-Canonical ensemble to acquire adsorption properties and separation performance data for benzene and cyclohexane in three metal-organic frameworks featuring coordinatively unsaturated metal sites (Ni-MOF-74, Ni-ClBBTA, and Ni-ClBTDD). The separation performance of these MOFs was analyzed and compared with literature data for adsorbents of different natures, demonstrating superior performance. Additionally, we explored the molecular origins of this effective separation, examining the pore-filling mechanism, interaction of guest molecules with metal centers, and mutual interactions of each adsorbate. Our results highlight that the selected adsorbents, with remarkable loading capacity, can efficiently separate both compounds in a mixture with exceptional effectiveness.

In this paper, we introduce a novel, adapted approach for computing gas adsorption properties in porous materials. We analyze the Dubinin-Polanyi's adsorption model and investigate various frameworks to estimate its required essential components. Those are linked to physicochemical properties of the adsorbates, such as the vapor saturation pressure and density in the adsorbed state. To conduct this analysis, we obtain adsorption isotherms for several metal-organic frameworks, encompassing a range of pore sizes, shapes, and chemical compositions. We then apply and evaluate multiple combinations of models for saturation pressure and density. After the evaluation of the method, we propose a working thermodynamic model for computing adsorption isotherms, which entails using the critical isochore as an approximation of the saturation pressure above the critical point and applying Hauer's method with a universal thermal expansion coefficient for density in the adsorbed state. This framework is applicable not only to simulated isotherms but also to experimental data from the literature for various molecules and structures, demonstrating robust predictive capabilities and high transferability. Our method showcases superior performance in terms of accuracy, generalizability, and simplicity compared to existing methods currently in use. For the first time, a method starting from a single adsorption curve and based on physically interpretable parameters can predict adsorption properties across a wide range of operating conditions.

The adsorption of fluorocarbons has gained significant importance as its use as refrigerants in energy storage applications. In this context, the adsorption behavior of two low global warming potential refrigerants, R125 fluorocarbon and its hydrocarbon analog, R170, within four nanoporous materials, namely MIL-101, Cu-BTC, ZIF-8, and UiO-66 has been investigated. By analyzing the validity of our models against experimental observations, we ensure the reliability of our molecular simulations. Our analysis encompasses a range of crucial parameters, including adsorption isotherms, enthalpy of adsorption, and energy storage densities, all under varying operating conditions.We find remarkable agreement between computed and observed adsorption isotherms for R125 within MIL-101. However, to obtain similar success for the rest of the adsorbents, we need to take into account a few considerations, such as the presence of inaccessible cages in Cu-BTC, the flexibility of ZIF-8, or the defects in UiO-66. Transitioning to energy storage properties, we investigated various scenarios, including processes with varying adsorption and desorption conditions. Our findings underscore the dominance of MIL-101 in terms of storage densities, with R125 exhibiting superior affinity over R170. Complex mechanisms governed by changes in pressure, temperature, and desorption behavior make for complicated patterns, demanding a case-specific approach. In summary, this study navigates the complex landscape of refrigerant adsorption in diverse nanoporous materials. It highlights the significance of operating conditions, model selection, and refrigerant and adsorbent choices for energy storage applications.

The building climate industry and its influence on energy consumption have consequences on the environment due to the emission of greenhouse gasses. Improving the efficiency of this sector is essential to reduce the effect on climate change. In recent years, the interest in porous materials in applications such as heat pumps has increased for their promising potential. To assess the performance of adsorption heat pumps and cooling systems, here we discuss a multistep approach based on the processing of adsorption data combined with a thermodynamic model. The process provides properties of interest, such as the coefficient of performance, the working capacity, the specific heat or cooling effect, or the released heat upon adsorption and desorption cycles, and it also has the advantage of identifying the optimal conditions for each adsorbent-fluid pair. To test this method, we select several metal-organic frameworks that differ in topology, chemical composition, and pore size, which we validate with available experiments. Adsorption equilibrium curves were calculated using molecular simulations to describe the adsorption mechanisms of methanol and ethanol as working fluids in the selected adsorbents. Then, using a thermodynamic model we calculate the energetic properties combined with iterative algorithms that simultaneously vary all the required working conditions. We discuss the strong influence of operating temperatures on the performance of heat pump devices. Our findings point to the highly hydrophobic metal azolate framework MAF-6 as a very good candidate for heating and cooling applications for its high working capacity and excellent energy efficiency.

We monitored four supersoft sources - two persistent ones, CAL 83 and MR Vel, and the recent novae YZ Ret (Nova Ret 2020) and V1674 Her (Nova Her 2021) - with NICER. The two persistent SSS were observed with unvaried X-ray flux level and spectrum, respectively, 13 and 20 years after the last observations. Short period modulations of the supersoft X-ray source (SSS) appear where the spectrum of the luminous central source was fully visibl (in CAL 83 and V1674 Her) and were absent in YZ Ret and MR Vel, in which the flux originated in photoionized or shocked plasma, while the white dwarf (WD) was not observable. We thus suggest that the pulsations occur on, or very close to, the WD surface. The pulsations of CAL 83 were almost unvaried after 15 years, including an irregular drift of the $\simeq$67 s period by 2.1 s. Simulations, including previous XMM-Newton data, indicate actual variations in period length within hours, rather than an artifact of the variable amplitude of the pulsations. Large amplitude pulsations with a period of 501.53$\pm$0.30 s were always detected in V1674 Her, as long as the SSS was observable. This period seems to be due to rotation of a highly magnetized WD.We cannot confirm the maximum effective temperature of ($\simeq$145,000 K) previously inferred for this nova, and discuss the difficulty in interpreting its spectrum. In recent years, metal halide perovskites (MHPs) for optoelectronic applications have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their outstanding performance. The fundamental understanding of their physicochemical features is essential for improving their efficiency and stability. Atomistic and molecular simulations have played an essential role in the description of the optoelectronic properties and dynamical behaviour of MHPs, respectively. However, the complex interplay of the dynamical and optoelectronic properties in MHPs requires the simultaneous modelling of electrons and ions in relatively large systems, which entails a high computational cost, sometimes not affordable by the standard quantum mechanics methods, such as Density Functional Theory (DFT). Here, we explore the suitability of the recently developed Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) method, GFN1-xTB, for simulating MHPs with the aim of exploring an efficient alternative to DFT. The performance of GFN1-xTB for computing structural, vibrational and optoelectronic properties of several MHPs is benchmarked against experiments and DFT calculations. In general, this method produces accurate predictions for many of the properties of the studied MHPs, which are comparable to DFT and experiments. However, we also identify a few shortcomings, related to specific geometries and chemical compositions. Nevertheless, we believe that the tunability of GFN1-xTB is the key to resolving any observed issues and we propose specific targets, whose refinement will turn this method into a powerful computational tool for the study of MHPs and beyond., Comment: 11 + 5 pages, 10 + 8 figures

Metallic nanohole arrays have shown their potential as sensing tools. Important research supported by sophisticated laboratory experiments have been recently carried out, that may help to develop practical devices to be implemented in the real life. To get this goal, the gap between industry and technology at the nanoscale level must be overcome. One of the major drawbacks is the quality inspection of the manufactured nanostructured surfaces to ensure a reliable sensing. In this paper we introduce an optical method, based on the Extraordinary Optical Transmission phenomenon, for an inspection of such surfaces at industrial level. Unlike usual techniques like SEM, our method gives at the same time, a quick map of the surface homogeneity together with its local plasmonic performance. Our results show that this method is reproducible and reliable as to give a seal of identification and quality guarantee of the manufactured surface as basic element of a sensing device.

A heterogeneous architecture composed by a host and an accelerator must frequently deal with situations where several independent tasks are available to be offloaded onto the accelerator. These tasks can be generated by concurrent applications executing in the host or, in case the host is a node of a computer cluster, by applications running on other cluster nodes that are willing to offload tasks in the accelerator connected to the host. In this work we show that a runtime scheduler that selects the best execution order of a group of tasks on the accelerator can significantly reduce the total execution time of the tasks and, consequently, increase the accelerator use. Our solution is based on a temporal execution model that is able to predict with high accuracy the execution time of a set of concurrent tasks launched on the accelerator. The execution model has been validated in AMD, NVIDIA, and Xeon Phi devices using synthetic benchmarks. Moreover, employing the temporal execution model, a heuristic is proposed which is able to establish a near-optimal tasks execution ordering that significantly reduces the total execution time, including data transfers.The heuristic has been evaluated with five different benchmarks composed of dominant kernel and dominant transfer real tasks. Experiments indicate the heuristic is able to find always an ordering with a better execution time than the average of every possible execution order and, most times, it achieves a near-optimal ordering (very close to the execution time of the best execution order) with a negligible overhead. This paper proposes a classification via clustering approach to predict the final marks in a university course on the basis of forum data. The objective is twofold: to determine if student participation in the course forum can be a good predictor of the final marks for the course and to examine whether the proposed classification via clustering approach can obtain similar accuracy to traditional classification algorithms. Experiments were carried out using real data from first-year university students. Several clustering algorithms using the proposed approach were compared with traditional classification algorithms in predicting whether students pass or fail the course on the basis of their Moodle forum usage data. The results show that the Expectation-Maximisation (EM) clustering algorithm yields results similar to those of the best classification algorithms, especially when using only a group of selected attributes. Finally, the centroids of the EM clusters are described to show the relationship between the two clusters and the two classes of students. (Contains 2 figures and 6 tables.) This paper proposes to the use of a meta-learning approach for automatic parameter tuning of a well-known decision tree algorithm by using past information about algorithm executions. Fourteen educational datasets were analysed using various combinations of parameter values to examine the effects of the parameter values on accuracy classification. Then, the new meta-dataset was used to predict the classification accuracy on the basis of the value parameters and some characteristics of the dataset. The obtained classification models can help us decide how the default parameters should be tuned in order to increase the accuracy of the classifier when using different types of educational datasets. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is an array of large water Cherenkov detectors sensitive to gamma rays and hadronic cosmic rays in the energy band between 100 GeV and 100 TeV. The observatory will be used to measure high-energy protons and cosmic rays via detection of the energetic secondary particles reaching the ground when one of these particles interacts in the atmosphere above the detector. HAWC is under construction at a site 4100 meters above sea level on the northern slope of the volcano Sierra Negra, which is located in central Mexico at 19 degrees N latitude. It is scheduled for completion in 2014. In this paper we estimate the sensitivity of the HAWC instrument to point-like and extended sources of gamma rays. The source fluxes are modeled using both unbroken power laws and power laws with exponential cutoffs. HAWC, in one year, is sensitive to point sources with integral power-law spectra as low as 5x10^-13 cm^-2 sec^-1 above 2 TeV (approximately 50 mCrab) over 5 sr of the sky. This is a conservative estimate based on simple event parameters and is expected to improve as the data analysis techniques are refined. We discuss known TeV sources and the scientific contributions that HAWC can make to our understanding of particle acceleration in these sources.

We present the sensitivity of HAWC to Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). HAWC is a very high-energy gamma-ray observatory currently under construction in Mexico at an altitude of 4100 m. It will observe atmospheric air showers via the water Cherenkov method. HAWC will consist of 300 large water tanks instrumented with 4 photomultipliers each. HAWC has two data acquisition (DAQ) systems. The main DAQ system reads out coincident signals in the tanks and reconstructs the direction and energy of individual atmospheric showers. The scaler DAQ counts the hits in each photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the detector and searches for a statistical excess over the noise of all PMTs. We show that HAWC has a realistic opportunity to observe the high-energy power law components of GRBs that extend at least up to 30 GeV, as it has been observed by Fermi LAT. The two DAQ systems have an energy threshold that is low enough to observe events similar to GRB 090510 and GRB 090902b with the characteristics observed by Fermi LAT. HAWC will provide information about the high-energy spectra of GRBs which in turn could help to understanding about e-pair attenuation in GRB jets, extragalactic background light absorption, as well as establishing the highest energy to which GRBs accelerate particles.

This chapter is part of a book that recounts the year's work at the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) at Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. Rather than an "elitist" laboratory school for the children of university faculty, the dual-language ECDC is a collaboration between the Corpus Christi Independent School District and the university, with an enrollment representative of Corpus Christi's population. The chapter describes the ECDC's Learning through Drama program, in which children explore weekly concepts through movement and drama. Examples include movement and drama activities related to children's books, mime, field trips, geography, movies, and math, language, and science skills. We study the effect of the sigma(600) and a_1(1260) resonances in the rho^0 -> pi^+ pi^- gamma decay, within the meson dominance model. Major effects are driven by the mass and width parameters of the sigma(600), and the usually neglected contribution of the a_1(1260), although small by itself, may become sizable through its interference with pion bremsstrahlung, and the proper relative sign can favor the central value of the experimental branching ratio. We present a procedure, using the gauge invariant structure of the resonant amplitudes, to kinematically enhance the resonant effects in the angular and energy distribution of the photon. A complete calculation of the rare three-body decay t --> c h gamma is presented in the framework of the standard model. In the unitary gauge, such a calculation involves about 20 Feynman diagrams. We also calculate this decay in the general two-Higgs doublet model (model III), in which it arises at the tree-level. While in the standard model the decay t --> c h gamma is extremely suppressed, with a branching fraction of the order of $10^{-15}$ for a Higgs boson mass of the order of 115 GeV, in the model III it may have a branching ratio up to $10^{-5}$. The static electromagnetic properties of the $W$ boson, $\Delta \kappa$ and $\Delta Q$, are calculated in the $SU_L(3)} \times U_X(1)$ model with right-handed neutrinos. The new contributions from this model arise from the gauge and scalar sectors. In the gauge sector there is a new contribution from a complex neutral gauge boson $Y^0$ and a singly-charged gauge boson $Y^\pm$. The mass of these gauge bosons, called bileptons, is expected to be in the range of a few hundreds of GeV according to the current bounds from experimental data. If the bilepton masses are of the order of 200 GeV, the size of their contribution is similar to that obtained in other weakly coupled theories. However the contributions to both $\Delta Q$ and $\Delta \kappa$ are negligible for very heavy or degenerate bileptons. As for the scalar sector, an scenario is examined in which the contribution to the $W$ form factors is identical to that of a two-Higgs-doublet model. It is found that this sector would not give large corrections to $\Delta \kappa$ and $\Delta Q$., Comment: New material included. Final version to apppear in Physical Review D
