Objective: Vascular procedures involving groin incisions for femoral exposure often have complications that delay wound healing. These complications include but are not limited to the development of seromas, hematomas, skin necrosis, or infection requiring reintervention leading to readmission, increased length of stay, and increased morbidity and mortality, including limb loss. In this non-concurrent cohort study, we evaluate the usefulness of CellerateRX Surgical Powder in preventing postoperative groin complications. We compare the outcomes of groin incisions that received standard surgical wound care and those in which CellerateRX Surgical Powder was applied to the surgical incision prior to primary closure. Methods: Groin incisions required for femoral exposure in vascular surgery procedures were considered. The control group included cases between 2020 and 2021. Exclusion criteria included patients

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations create continuous shunting of unoxygenated blood through the lungs into the systemic circulation. These malformations are asymptomatic if small, but cause serious symptoms as they grow in size. Treatment primarily consists of endovascular embolization; lobectomy is preserved for recurring or endovascularly untreatable cases. We describe a case of a 24-year-old man who was first treated with coil embolization 10 years previously, with complete symptom resolution. However, more recently he noted recurrent exercise intolerance, with shortness of breath and hypoxemia. After repeat re-embolization, a computed tomography scan noted some persistent flow. Given the patient's young age, we considered resection as a definite therapy. The patient underwent an uncomplicated robot-assisted right lower lobectomy. Afterward, his symptoms resolved completely. In selected cases, robotic lobectomy for pulmonary arteriovenous malformation is feasible and safe.

Endovascular retrieval of fractured inferior vena cava (IVC) filters after the manufacturer recommended indwelling time can be challenging and require advanced retrieval techniques. We describe an endovascular retrieval technique of a fractured Optease IVC filter in a 57-year-old woman using endobronchial forceps and intraoperative cone-beam computed tomography guidance. Following incomplete filter retrieval, the location and orientation of fractured strut was confirmed by cone-beam computed tomography venography. The embedded filter fragment was then successfully removed using endobronchial forceps via a transjugular venous approach. In the present report, we highlight the additional value of intraoperative cross-sectional imaging, in conjunction with advanced endovascular techniques, for retrieval of challenging IVC filters.

Objective: We evaluated how contemporary data on infrapopliteal vessel preparation have been reported to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research. Methods: A literature search was performed on Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar to identify clinical research studies reporting on the outcomes of vessel preparation in below-the-knee lesions between 2006 and 2021. Pancreaticoduodenal arterial arcade aneurysms are rare but are prone to rupture. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman with an asymptomatic pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysm and concomitant celiac trunk occlusion that was treated using an endovascular approach. After percutaneous transfemoral access and superior mesenteric artery cannulation, intraoperative cone-beam computed tomography angiography was performed to better understand the aneurysm morphology and provide image guidance. On selecting the optimal working projection, the aneurysm and distal parent vessel were cannulated and treated by braided stent (low-profile visualized intraluminal support; MicroVention)-assisted coil embolization. Completion angiography and cone-beam computed tomography confirmed successful exclusion of the aneurysm sac and a patent pancreaticoduodenal arcade with a well-apposed stent.

Type II endoleak (T2E) leading to aneurysm sac enlargement is one of the challenging complications associated with endovascular aneurysm repair. Recent guidelines recommend embolization of T2E associated with aneurysmal sac enlargement. Various percutaneous and endovascular techniques have been reported for embolization of T2E. We report a novel technique for T2E embolization combining laparoscopic and endovascular approaches using preoperative image fusion. We believe our technique provides a more direct access to the lumbar feeding vessels that is typically challenging with transarterial or translumbar embolization techniques.

YbBO 3 is a member of the orthoborate family of materials which contains a triangular arrangement of Yb 3+ ions. Here we study the physical properties of YbBO 3 with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and ac susceptibility measurements. The neutron diffraction measurements confirm that our samples of YbBO 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space groupC2/c(#15) which contains two crystallographically distinct Yb 3+ sites decorating a slightly distorted triangular lattice. Heat capacity and ac susceptibility measurements indicate a potential transition to magnetic order at 0.4 K. In agreement with these observations, neutron diffraction measurements at 0.044 K observe magnetic Bragg peaks which can be indexed by a propagation vector of (0 0 1). Although determining a unique spin configuration corresponding to the observed magnetic Bragg peaks is not possible, model refinements indicate that the ordered moments are likely in the range of 0.4-0.9 μBand, notably, require moments on both Yb sites. In addition to the magnetic Bragg peaks, diffuse scattering at low Q is observed indicating that the transition does not correspond to complete long range magnetic order. The two-site picture for YbBO 3 is further evidenced by the number of crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Together these results show that YbBO 3 is a two-site triangular lattice material with signatures of long-range order as well as shorter ranged spin correlations., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

CHESS, chopper spectrometer examining small samples, is a planned direct geometry neutron chopper spectrometer designed to detect and analyze weak signals intrinsic to small cross sections (e.g., small mass, small magnetic moments, or neutron absorbing materials) in powders, liquids, and crystals. CHESS is optimized to enable transformative investigations of quantum materials, spin liquids, thermoelectrics, battery materials, and liquids. The broad dynamic range of the instrument is also well suited to study relaxation processes and excitations in soft and biological matter. The 15 Hz repetition rate of the Second Target Station at the Spallation Neutron Source enables the use of multiple incident energies within a single source pulse, greatly expanding the information gained in a single measurement. Furthermore, the high flux grants an enhanced capability for polarization analysis. This enables the separation of nuclear from magnetic scattering or coherent from incoherent scattering in hydrogenous materials over a large range of energy and momentum transfer. This paper presents optimizations and technical solutions to address the key requirements envisioned in the science case and the anticipated uses of this instrument.

In quantum magnets, magnetic moments fluctuate heavily and are strongly entangled with each other, a fundamental distinction from classical magnetism. Here, with inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we probe the spin correlations of the honeycomb lattice quantum magnet YbCl 3 . A linear spin wave theory with a single Heisenberg interaction on the honeycomb lattice, including both transverse and longitudinal channels of the neutron response, reproduces all of the key features in the spectrum. In particular, we identify a Van Hove singularity, a clearly observable sharp feature within a continuum response. The demonstration of such a Van Hove singularity in a two-magnon continuum is important as a confirmation of broadly held notions of continua in quantum magnetism and additionally because analogous features in two-spinon continua could be used to distinguish quantum spin liquids from merely disordered systems. These results establish YbCl 3 as a benchmark material for quantum magnetism on the honeycomb lattice.

To probe ligand-receptor binding at the atomic-level, a frequent approach involves multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy experiments relying on 13 C- and/or 15 N-enrichment alongside 1 H. Alternatively, the lack of fluorine in biomolecules may be exploited through specific incorporation of 19 F nuclei into a sample. The 19 F nucleus is highly sensitive to environmental changes and allows for one-dimensional NMR spectroscopic study, with perturbation to chemical shift and spin dynamics diagnostic of structural change, ligand binding, and modified conformational sampling. This was applied to the apelinergic system, which comprises a rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor (the apelin receptor (AR)/APJ) and two families of cognate ligands, the apelin and apela (ELABELA/toddler) peptides. Specifically, AR fragments consisting of either the N-terminal tail and first transmembrane (TM) α-helix (AR55) or the first three transmembrane α-helices (TM1-3) were prepared with biosynthetic fluorotryptophan incorporation. Interactions of each AR fragment with a high-affinity, 2,4,5-trifluorophenylalanine labeled apelin analogue were compared by 19 F NMR. Distinct ranges of 19 F chemical shifts for ligand and receptor provide unambiguous tracking of both species, with distinct binding behaviour observed for each AR fragment implying that AR55 is not sufficient to recapitulate the physiological binding event. Site-specific perturbation was also apparent for the apelin analogue as a function of substitution site, indicating an orientational binding preference. As a whole, this strategy of distinctive 19 F labelling for ligand and receptor provides a relatively fast (i.e., employing 1D NMR experiments) and highly sensitive method to simultaneously and definitively track binding in both species.

Low dimensional quantum magnets are interesting because of the emerging collective behavior arising from strong quantum fluctuations. The one-dimensional (1D) S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a paradigmatic example, whose low-energy excitations, known as spinons, carry fractional spin S = 1/2. These fractional modes can be reconfined by the application of a staggered magnetic field. Even though considerable progress has been made in the theoretical understanding of such magnets, experimental realizations of this low-dimensional physics are relatively rare. This is particularly true for rare-earth-based magnets because of the large effective spin anisotropy induced by the combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and crystal field splitting. Here, we demonstrate that the rare-earth perovskite YbAlO 3 provides a realization of a quantum spin S = 1/2 chain material exhibiting both quantum critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior and spinon confinement-deconfinement transitions in different regions of magnetic field-temperature phase diagram.

The breathing pyrochlore lattice material Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 exists in the nearly decoupled limit, in contrast to most other well-studied breathing pyrochlore compounds. As a result, it constitutes a useful platform to benchmark theoretical calculations of exchange interactions in insulating Yb 3+ magnets. Here we study Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 at low temperatures in applied magnetic fields as a further probe of the physics of this model system. Experimentally, we consider the behavior of polycrystalline samples of Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 with a combination of inelastic neutron scattering and heat capacity measurements down to 75 mK and up to fields of 10 T. Consistent with previous work, inelastic neutron scattering finds a level crossing near 3 T, but no significant dispersion of the spin excitations is detected up to the highest applied fields. Refinement of the theoretical model previously determined at zero field can reproduce much of the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and specific heat data. A notable exception is a low temperature peak in the specific heat at  ∼0.1 K. This may indicate the scale of interactions between tetrahedra or may reflect undetected disorder in Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 .

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL) is an exotic emergent state of matter exhibiting Majorana fermion and gauge flux excitations. The magnetic insulator α-RuCl 3 is thought to realize a proximate KQSL. We used neutron scattering on single crystals of α-RuCl 3 to reconstruct dynamical correlations in energy-momentum space. We discovered highly unusual signals, including a column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center, which is very stable with temperature. This finding is consistent with scattering from the Majorana excitations of a KQSL. Other, more delicate experimental features can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. Our results encourage further study of this prototypical material and may open a window into investigating emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials., (Copyright © 2017, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)

Entanglement of spin and orbital degrees of freedom drives the formation of novel quantum and topological physical states. Here we report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the transition metal oxides Ca_{3}LiOsO_{6} and Ba_{2}YOsO_{6}, which reveals a dramatic spitting of the t_{2g} manifold. We invoke an intermediate coupling approach that incorporates both spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions on an even footing and reveal that the ground state of 5d^{3}-based compounds, which has remained elusive in previously applied models, is a novel spin-orbit entangled J=3/2 electronic ground state. This work reveals the hidden diversity of spin-orbit controlled ground states in 5d systems and introduces a new arena in the search for spin-orbit controlled phases of matter.

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are topological states of matter exhibiting remarkable properties such as the capacity to protect quantum information from decoherence. Whereas their featureless ground states have precluded their straightforward experimental identification, excited states are more revealing and particularly interesting owing to the emergence of fundamentally new excitations such as Majorana fermions. Ideal probes of these excitations are inelastic neutron scattering experiments. These we report here for a ruthenium-based material, α-RuCl3, continuing a major search (so far concentrated on iridium materials) for realizations of the celebrated Kitaev honeycomb topological QSL. Our measurements confirm the requisite strong spin-orbit coupling and low-temperature magnetic order matching predictions proximate to the QSL. We find stacking faults, inherent to the highly two-dimensional nature of the material, resolve an outstanding puzzle. Crucially, dynamical response measurements above interlayer energy scales are naturally accounted for in terms of deconfinement physics expected for QSLs. Comparing these with recent dynamical calculations involving gauge flux excitations and Majorana fermions of the pure Kitaev model, we propose the excitation spectrum of α-RuCl3 as a prime candidate for fractionalized Kitaev physics.

The low energy spin excitation spectrum of the breathing pyrochlore Ba_{3}Yb_{2}Zn_{5}O_{11} has been investigated with inelastic neutron scattering. Several nearly resolution limited modes with no observable dispersion are observed at 250 mK while, at elevated temperatures, transitions between excited levels become visible. To gain deeper insight, a theoretical model of isolated Yb^{3+} tetrahedra parametrized by four anisotropic exchange constants is constructed. The model reproduces the inelastic neutron scattering data, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility with high fidelity. The fitted exchange parameters reveal a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a very large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Using this model, we predict the appearance of an unusual octupolar paramagnet at low temperatures and speculate on the development of intertetrahedron correlations.

Much consideration has been given to the role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in 5d oxides, particularly on the formation of novel electronic states and manifested metal-insulator transitions (MITs). SOC plays a dominant role in 5d(5) iridates (Ir(4+)), undergoing MITs both concurrent (pyrochlores) and separated (perovskites) from the onset of magnetic order. However, the role of SOC for other 5d configurations is less clear. For example, 5d(3) (Os(5+)) systems are expected to have an orbital singlet with reduced effective SOC. The pyrochlore Cd2Os2O7 nonetheless exhibits a MIT entwined with magnetic order phenomenologically similar to pyrochlore iridates. Here, we resolve the magnetic structure in Cd2Os2O7 with neutron diffraction and then via resonant inelastic X-ray scattering determine the salient electronic and magnetic energy scales controlling the MIT. In particular, SOC plays a subtle role in creating the electronic ground state but drives the magnetic order and emergence of a multiple spin-flip magnetic excitation.

Recent theoretical and experimental findings suggest the long-known but not well understood low temperature resistance plateau of SmB6 may originate from protected surface states arising from a topologically non-trivial bulk band structure having strong Kondo hybridization. Yet others have ascribed this feature to impurities, vacancies, and surface reconstructions. Given the typical methods used to prepare SmB6 single crystals, flux and floating-zone procedures, such ascriptions should not be taken lightly. We demonstrate how compositional variations and/or observable amounts of impurities in SmB6 crystals grown using both procedures affect the physical properties. From X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and X-ray computed tomography experiments we observe that natural isotope containing (SmB6) and doubly isotope enriched ((154)Sm(11)B6) crystals prepared using aluminum flux contain co-crystallized, epitaxial aluminum. Further, a large, nearly stoichiometric crystal of SmB6 was successfully grown using the float-zone technique; upon continuing the zone melting, samarium vacancies were introduced. These samarium vacancies drastically alter the resistance and plateauing magnitude of the low temperature resistance compared to stoichiometric SmB6. These results highlight that impurities and compositional variations, even at low concentrations, must be considered when collecting/analyzing physical property data of SmB6. Finally, a more accurate samarium-154 coherent neutron scattering length, 8.9(1) fm, is reported.

Enhanced coupling of material properties offers new fundamental insights and routes to multifunctional devices. In this context 5d oxides provide new paradigms of cooperative interactions that drive novel emergent behaviour. This is exemplified in osmates that host metal-insulator transitions where magnetic order appears intimately entwined. Here we consider such a material, the 5d perovskite NaOsO3, and observe a coupling between spin and phonon manifested in a frequency shift of 40 cm(-1), the largest measured in any material. The anomalous modes are shown to involve solely Os-O interactions and magnetism is revealed as the driving microscopic mechanism for the phonon renormalization. The magnitude of the coupling in NaOsO3 is primarily due to a property common to all 5d materials: the large spatial extent of the ion. This allows magnetism to couple to phonons on an unprecedented scale and in general offers multiple new routes to enhanced coupled phenomena in 5d materials.

A central issue in material science is to obtain understanding of the electronic correlations that control complex materials. Such electronic correlations frequently arise because of the competition of localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom. Although the respective limits of well-localized or entirely itinerant ground states are well understood, the intermediate regime that controls the functional properties of complex materials continues to challenge theoretical understanding. We have used neutron spectroscopy to investigate plutonium, which is a prototypical material at the brink between bonding and nonbonding configurations. Our study reveals that the ground state of plutonium is governed by valence fluctuations, that is, a quantum mechanical superposition of localized and itinerant electronic configurations as recently predicted by dynamical mean field theory. Our results not only resolve the long-standing controversy between experiment and theory on plutonium's magnetism but also suggest an improved understanding of the effects of such electronic dichotomy in complex materials.

A new method to determine epoxide concentrations in oxidized oils was developed and validated using (1)H NMR. Epoxides derived from lipid oxidation gave signals between 2.90 and 3.24 ppm, well separated from the signals of other lipid oxidation products. To calibrate, soybean oils with a range of epoxide concentrations were synthesized and analyzed using (1)H NMR by taking the sn-1,3 glycerol protons (4.18, 4.33 ppm) as internal references. The (1)H NMR signals were compared to the epoxide content determined by titration with hydrogen bromide (HBr)-acetic acid solution. As expected, the signal response increased with concentration linearly (R(2) = 99.96%), and validation of the method gave results comparable to those of the HBr method. A study of the oxidative stability of soybean oil was performed by applying this method to monitor epoxides during thermal lipid oxidation. The epoxide content increased over time and showed a different trend compared to peroxide value (PV). A phenomenological model was suggested to model epoxides derived from lipid oxidation.

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we map a 14 meV coherent resonant mode in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6 and describe its relation to the low energy insulating band structure. The resonant intensity is confined to the X and R high symmetry points, repeating outside the first Brillouin zone and dispersing less than 2 meV, with a 5d-like magnetic form factor. We present a slave-boson treatment of the Anderson Hamiltonian with a third neighbor dominated hybridized band structure. This approach produces a spin exciton below the charge gap with features that are consistent with the observed neutron scattering. We find that maxima in the wave vector dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering indicate band inversion.

The insulator-to-metal transition continues to be a challenging subject, especially when electronic correlations are strong. In layered compounds, such as La2-xSrxNiO4 and La2-xBaxCuO4, the doped charge carriers can segregate into periodically spaced charge stripes separating narrow domains of antiferromagnetic order. Although there have been theoretical proposals of dynamically fluctuating stripes, direct spectroscopic evidence of charge-stripe fluctuations has been lacking. Here we report the detection of critical lattice fluctuations, driven by charge-stripe correlations, in La2-xSrxNiO4 using inelastic neutron scattering. This scattering is detected at large momentum transfers where the magnetic form factor suppresses the spin fluctuation signal. The lattice fluctuations associated with the dynamic charge stripes are narrow in q and broad in energy. They are strongest near the charge-stripe melting temperature. Our results open the way towards the quantitative theory of dynamic stripes and for directly detecting dynamical charge stripes in other strongly correlated systems, including high-temperature superconductors such as La2-xSrxCuO4.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements of individual phonon lifetimes and dispersion at 295 and 1200 K have been used to probe anharmonicity and thermal conductivity in UO2. They show that longitudinal optic phonon modes carry the largest amount of heat, in contrast to past simulations and that the total conductivity demonstrates a quantitative correspondence between microscopic and macroscopic phonon physics. We have further performed first-principles simulations for UO2 showing semiquantitative agreement with phonon lifetimes at 295 K, but larger anharmonicity than measured at 1200 K.

A new, easily synthesized diphosphine based on a heterocyclic 1,3,2-diazaphospholidine framework has been prepared. Due to the large, sterically encumbering Dipp groups (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) on the heterocyclic ring, the diphosphine undergoes homolytic cleavage of the P-P bond in solution to form two phosphinyl radicals. The diphosphine has been reacted with O(2), S(8), Se, Te, and P(4), giving products that involve insertion of elements between the P-P bond to yield the related phosphinic acid anhydride, sulfide/disulfide, selenide, telluride, and a butterfly-type perphospha-bicyclobutadiene structure with a trans,trans-geometry. All molecules have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Variable-temperature EPR spectroscopy was utilized to study the nature of the phosphinyl radical in solution. Electronic structure calculations were performed on a number of systems from the parent diphosphine [H(2)P](2) to amino-substituted [(H(2)N)(2)P](2) and cyclic amino-substituted [(H(2)C)(2)(NH)(2)P](2); then, bulky substituents (Ph or Dipp) were attached to the cyclic amino systems. Calculations on the isolated diphosphine at the B3LYP/6-31+G* level show that the homolytic cleavage of the P-P bond to form two phosphinyl radicals is favored over the diphosphine by ~11 kJ/mol. Furthermore, there is a significant amount of relaxation energy stored in the ligands (52.3 kJ/mol), providing a major driving force behind the homolytic cleavage of the central P-P bond.

The spin fluctuation spectra from nonsuperconducting Cu-substituted, and superconducting Co-substituted, BaFe(2)As(2) are compared quantitatively by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and are found to be indistinguishable. Whereas diffraction studies show the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order in Co and Ni substituted samples, the magnetic phase diagram for Cu substitution does not display incommensurate order, demonstrating that simple electron counting based on rigid-band concepts is invalid. These results, supported by theoretical calculations, suggest that substitutional impurity effects in the Fe plane play a significant role in controlling magnetism and the appearance of superconductivity, with Cu distinguished by enhanced impurity scattering and split-band behavior.

The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is one of the most dramatic manifestations of electron correlations in materials. Various mechanisms producing MITs have been extensively considered, including the Mott (electron localization via Coulomb repulsion), Anderson (localization via disorder), and Peierls (localization via distortion of a periodic one-dimensional lattice) mechanisms. One additional route to a MIT proposed by Slater, in which long-range magnetic order in a three dimensional system drives the MIT, has received relatively little attention. Using neutron and x-ray scattering we show that the MIT in NaOsO(3) is coincident with the onset of long-range commensurate three dimensional magnetic order. While candidate materials have been suggested, our experimental methodology allows the first definitive demonstration of the long predicted Slater MIT.

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first principles calculations examining the intermetallic marcasite CrSb(2). The observed spin-wave dispersion implies that the magnetic interactions are strongly one-dimensional with antiferromagnetic chains parallel to the crystalline c axis. Such low-dimensional excitations are unexpected in a semiconducting intermetallic system. Moreover, we observe a clear anisotropic thermal conductivity indicating that the magnetic anisotropy enhances thermoelectric properties along particular crystallographic directions.

We present a detailed study of magnetism in LuFe(2)O(4), combining magnetization measurements with neutron and soft x-ray diffraction. The magnetic phase diagram in the vicinity of T(N) involves a metamagnetic transition separating an antiferro- and a ferrimagnetic phase. For both phases the spin structure is refined by neutron diffraction. Understanding the microscopic processes affecting the bulk thermal conductivity is crucial to develop more efficient thermoelectric materials. PbTe is currently one of the leading thermoelectric materials, largely thanks to its low thermal conductivity. However, the origin of this low thermal conductivity in a simple rocksalt structure has so far been elusive. Using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles computations of the phonons, we identify a strong anharmonic coupling between the ferroelectric transverse optic mode and the longitudinal acoustic modes in PbTe. This interaction extends over a large portion of reciprocal space, and directly affects the heat-carrying longitudinal acoustic phonons. The longitudinal acoustic-transverse optic anharmonic coupling is likely to play a central role in explaining the low thermal conductivity of PbTe. The present results provide a microscopic picture of why many good thermoelectric materials are found near a lattice instability of the ferroelectric type.

New examples of chlorophosphinochlorophosphonium (4) and chlorophosphinodichlorophosphonium (5) cations have been prepared and spectroscopically characterized. These bifunctional phosphinophosphonium cations offer a new approach to the development of phosphinophosphonium frameworks using reductive coupling reactions and have been exploited as synthons to assemble larger catena-phosphorus cations. The reactions of 4 and 5 with stibine reducing agents have been studied using (31)P NMR spectroscopy and have been shown to produce a variety of new and known frameworks in a facile manner, depending on the reducing agent selection and the stoichiometry of the reaction. New derivatives of frameworks containing three, four, and five phosphorus atoms have been identified by (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Crystals of the [GaCl(4)](-) salt of the five-membered dication 11((i)Pr) have been isolated from the reaction of [4((i)Pr)][GaCl(4)] with SbBu(3), and the solid state structural features and solution state dynamics are comprehensively described in the context of (31)P{(1)H} NMR spectroscopic observations.

Complexes of lead with L-phenylalanine, L-isoleucine, L-valine, or L-arginine have been isolated from reaction mixtures containing lead nitrate and the respective amino acid in acidic aqueous solution. The compounds have been comprehensively characterized using X-ray crystallography, solid state NMR spectroscopy and solution state NMR spectroscopy, IR and Raman spectroscopies, and electrospray ionization mass-spectrometry. The solid state structures of lead-phenylalanine, lead-valine, and lead-valine-isoleucine complexes show a lead center coordinated by two amino acid ligands, while the lead-arginine complex is a cluster involving two lead centers and three arginine molecules. The structural, spectroscopic, and spectrometric characterization of the complexes provides a basis to establish a fundamental understanding of heavy metal-amino acid interactions.

It is shown that attempts to accurately deduce the magnetic penetration depth λ of overdoped BaFe(1.82)Co(0.18)As₂ single crystals by transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF μSR) are thwarted by field-induced magnetic order and strong vortex-lattice disorder. We explain how substantial deviations from the magnetic field distribution of a nearly perfect vortex lattice by one or both of these factors is also significant for other iron-arsenic superconductors, and this introduces considerable uncertainty in the values of λ obtained by TF μSR.

The 2-propynyl group in the title compound, C(17)H(22)O(10), adopts an exoanomeric conformation, with the acetylenic group gauche with respect to position C1. Comparison of (13)C NMR chemical shifts from solution and the solid state suggest that the acetylenic group also adopts a conformation anti to C1 in solution. The pyranose ring adopts a (4)C(1) conformation. Of the three secondary O-acetyl groups, that on position O4, flanked by two equatorial groups, adopts a syn conformation, in agreement with recent generalizations [González-Outeiriño, Nasser & Anderson (2005). J. Org. Chem. 70, 2486-2493]. The acetyl group on position O3 adopts a gauche conformation, also in agreement with the recent generalizations, but that on position O2 adopts a syn conformation, not in agreement with the recent generalizations.

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of superconducting Ba(0.67)K(0.33)Fe(2)As(2) (T(c) = 38 K). In addition to confirming the resonance previously found in powder samples, we find that spin excitations in the normal state form longitudinally elongated ellipses along the Q(AFM) direction in momentum space, consistent with density functional theory predictions. On cooling below T(c), while the resonance preserves its momentum anisotropy as expected, spin excitations at energies below the resonance become essentially isotropic in the in-plane momentum space and dramatically increase their correlation length. These results suggest that the superconducting gap structures in Ba(0.67)Ka(0.33)Fe(2)As(2) are more complicated than those suggested from angle resolved photoemission experiments.

In this review, we present a summary of experimental studies of magnetism in Fe-based superconductors. The doping dependent phase diagram shows strong similarities to the generic phase diagram of the cuprates. Parent compounds exhibit magnetic order together with a structural phase transition, both of which are progressively suppressed with doping, allowing superconductivity to emerge. The stripe-like spin arrangement of Fe moments in the magnetically ordered state shows identical in-plane structure for the RFeAsO (R = rare earth) and AFe(2)As(2) (A = Sr, Ca, Ba, Eu and K) parent compounds, notably different than the spin configuration of the cuprates. Interestingly, Fe(1 + y)Te orders with a different spin order despite having very similar Fermi surface topology. Studies of the spin dynamics of the parent compounds show that the interactions are best characterized as anisotropic three-dimensional interactions. Despite the room temperature tetragonal structure, analysis of the low temperature spin waves under the assumption of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian indicates strong in-plane anisotropy with a significant next-nearest-neighbor interaction. For the superconducting state, a resonance, localized in both wavevector and energy, is observed in the spin excitation spectrum as for the cuprates. This resonance is observed at a wavevector compatible with a Fermi surface nesting instability independent of the magnetic ordering of the relevant parent compound. The resonance energy (E(r)) scales with the superconducting transition temperature (T(C)) as E(r) ∼ 4.9k(B)T(C), which is consistent with the canonical value of ∼ 5k(B)T(C) observed for the cuprates. Moreover, the relationship between the resonance energy and the superconducting gap, Δ, is similar to that observed for many unconventional superconductors (E(r)/2Δ ∼ 0.64).

We use neutron scattering to study magnetic excitations in crystals near the ideal superconducting composition of FeTe(0.5)Se(0.5). Two types of excitations are found, a resonance at (0.5,0.5,0) and incommensurate fluctuations on either side of this position. We show that the two sets of magnetic excitations behave differently with doping, with the resonance being fixed in position while the incommensurate excitations move as the doping is changed. These unusual results show that a common behavior of the low energy magnetic excitations is not necessary for pairing in these materials.

We report inelastic and elastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements for polycrystalline sodium ruthenate (Na(3)RuO(4)). Previous work suggests that this material consists of isolated tetramers of S = 3/2  Ru(5+) ions in a so-called lozenge configuration. Comparisons of magnetic susceptibility and inelastic and elastic neutron scattering results with analytic calculations for several cluster models show that although there may be significant spin-spin correlations within the lozenge cluster, a simple isolated lozenge model is not appropriate for Na(3)RuO(4).

We report neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of BaFe1.92Co0.08As2. The magnetic Bragg peak intensity is reduced by 6% upon cooling through TC. The spin dynamics exhibit a gap of 8 meV with anisotropic three-dimensional interactions. Below TC additional intensity appears at an energy of approximately 4.5(0.5) meV, similar to previous observations of a spin resonance in other Fe-based superconductors. No further gapping of the spin excitations is observed below TC for energies down to 2 meV. These observations suggest the redistribution of spectral weight from the magnetic Bragg position to a spin resonance, demonstrating the direct competition between static magnetic order and superconductivity.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of superconducting BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 reveal a magnetic excitation located at wave vectors (1/2 1/2 L) in tetragonal notation. On cooling below T_{C}, a clear resonance peak is observed at this wave vector with an energy of 8.6(0.5) meV, corresponding to 4.5(0.3) k_{B}T_{C}. This is in good agreement with the canonical value of 5 k_{B}T_{C} observed in the cuprates. The spectrum shows strong dispersion in the tetragonal plane but very weak dispersion along the c axis, indicating that the magnetic fluctuations are two dimensional in nature. This is in sharp contrast to the anisotropic three dimensional spin excitations seen in the undoped parent compounds.

Magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements are used to map out the entire magnetic phase diagram of KFe(MoO4)2. This stacked triangular antiferromagnet is structurally similar to the famous multiferroic system RbFe(MoO4)2. Because of an additional small crystallographic distortion, it contains two sets of inequivalent distorted magnetic triangular lattices. As a result, the spin network breaks down into two intercalated yet almost independent magnetic subsystems. One is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied magnetic fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true three-dimensional or unconventional quasi-two-dimensional ordering.

A new family of superconductors containing layers of iron arsenide has attracted considerable interest because of their high transition temperatures (T(c)), some of which are >50 K, and because of similarities with the high-T(c) copper oxide superconductors. In both the iron arsenides and the copper oxides, superconductivity arises when an antiferromagnetically ordered phase has been suppressed by chemical doping. A universal feature of the copper oxide superconductors is the existence of a resonant magnetic excitation, localized in both energy and wavevector, within the superconducting phase. This resonance, which has also been observed in several heavy-fermion superconductors, is predicted to occur when the sign of the superconducting energy gap takes opposite values on different parts of the Fermi surface, an unusual gap symmetry which implies that the electron pairing interaction is repulsive at short range. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy shows no evidence of gap anisotropy in the iron arsenides, but such measurements are insensitive to the phase of the gap on separate parts of the Fermi surface. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering observations of a magnetic resonance below T(c) in Ba(0.6)K(0.4)Fe(2)As(2), a phase-sensitive measurement demonstrating that the superconducting energy gap has unconventional symmetry in the iron arsenide superconductors.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in CaFe2As2 indicate that the spin wave velocity in the Fe layers is exceptionally large and similar in magnitude to the cuprates. However, the spin wave velocity perpendicular to the layers is at least half as large that in the layer, so that the magnetism is more appropriately categorized as anisotropic three-dimensional, in contrast to the two-dimensional cuprates. Exchange constants derived from band structure calculations predict spin wave velocities that are consistent with the experimental data.

X-ray scattering by multiferroic LuFe2O4 is reported. Below 320 K, superstructure reflections indicate an incommensurate charge order with propagation close to (1/3 1/3 3/2). The corresponding charge configuration, also found by electronic structure calculations as most stable, contains polar Fe/O double layers with antiferroelectric stacking. Diffuse scattering at 360 K, with (1/3 1/3 0) propagation, indicates ferroelectric short-range correlations between neighboring double layers. The temperature dependence of the incommensuration indicates that charge order and magnetism are coupled.

Salts of the first crystallographically characterized chlorophosphinophosphonium ions have been prepared, and their reaction with Ph3P results in reductive coupling of the chlorophosphine centers to give the first acyclic 2,3-diphosphino-1,4-diphosphonium ions, representing a key framework in the development of catena-phosphorus chemistry. These new salts of general formula [R3P-PR'-PR'-PR3][OTf]2 are also obtained in a one-pot diastereoselective reaction of a dichlorophosphine, a tertiary phosphine, and trimethylsilyltrifluoromethanesulfonate. The structural and spectroscopic features of the new dications complement those of the known diphosphonium and 2-phosphino-1,3-diphosphonium dications. Quantitative ligand exchange reactions are observed when derivatives of [Ph3P-PR'-PR'-PPh3][OTf]2 are combined with Me3P, demonstrating the coordinative nature of the phosphine-phosphonium P-P bonds and implicating a bonding model involving the diphosphenium dication acceptor. The observed solid state structures have been interpreted in the context of computational studies.

We have studied the phonon density of states (PDOS) in LaFeAsO(1-x)Fx with inelastic neutron scattering methods. The PDOS of the parent compound (x=0) is very similar to the PDOS of samples optimally doped with fluorine to achieve the maximum Tc (x approximately 0.1). Good agreement is found between the experimental PDOS and first-principles calculations with the exception of a small difference in Fe mode frequencies. The PDOS reported here is not consistent with conventional electron-phonon mediated superconductivity.
