In this paper, we provide algorithmic methods for conducting exhaustive searches for periodic Golay pairs. Our methods enumerate several lengths beyond the currently known state-of-the-art available searches: we conducted exhaustive searches for periodic Golay pairs of all lengths $v \leq 72$ using our methods, while only lengths $v \leq 34$ had previously been exhaustively enumerated. Our methods are applicable to periodic complementary sequences in general. We utilize sequence compression, a method of sequence generation derived in 2013 by Djokovi\'c and Kotsireas. We also introduce and implement a new method of "multi-level" compression, where sequences are uncompressed in several steps. This method allowed us to exhaustively search all lengths $v \leq 72$ using less than 10 CPU years. For cases of complementary sequences where uncompression is not possible, we introduce some new methods of sequence generation inspired by the isomorph-free exhaustive generation algorithm of orderly generation. Finally, we pose a conjecture regarding the structure of periodic Golay pairs and prove it holds in many lengths, including all lengths $v \lt 100$. We demonstrate the usefulness of our algorithms by providing the first ever examples of periodic Golay pairs of length $v = 90$. The smallest length for which the existence of periodic Golay pairs is undecided is now $106$.

A detailed analysis of ptychography for 3D phase reconstructions of thick specimens is performed. We introduce multi-focus ptychography, which incorporates a 4D-STEM defocus series to enhance the quality of 3D reconstructions along the beam direction through a higher overdetermination ratio. This method is compared with established multi-slice ptychography techniques, such as conventional ptychography, regularized ptychography, and multi-mode ptychography. Additionally, we contrast multi-focus ptychography with an alternative method that uses virtual optical sectioning through a reconstructed scattering matrix ($\mathcal{S}$-matrix), which offers more precise 3D structure information compared to conventional ptychography. Our findings from multiple 3D reconstructions based on simulated and experimental data demonstrate that multi-focus ptychography surpasses other techniques, particularly in accurately reconstructing the surfaces and interface regions of thick specimens.

A modern cold triple axis spectrometer is being planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the design of an incident beamline that will put a flux of $\sim 10^8\mathrm{\frac{n}{cm^2 s}}$ on a sample with an area of 2 cm x 2 cm. It takes current physical constraints at HFIR into account and it can accommodate both single and multiplexed analyzer-detector secondary spectrometers and large superconducting magnets. The proposed incident beamline includes a multi-channel guide with horizontal focusing, a neutron velocity selector, components to facilitate an incident beam polarization option, and a double-focusing pyrolytic graphite monochromator. This work describes the process of optimizing the guide system and monochromator and summarizes the expected performance of the incident beamline for non-polarized operation.

6. 'It's Ok Not to Know What I Want to Do': An Exploration into the Aspirations of Early Childhood Studies Students

The importance of embedding employability skills in English Higher Education has received increased attention since the introduction of tuition fees and employers claiming that graduates lack the necessary skills for the workforce. This paper considers how these employability skills align with students' aspirations, when there is uncertainty around their career trajectory, an area that appears unexplored in current literature. Using an interpretative approach this small-scale study (n=25) sought views of first year students within an HE institution in the East Midlands of England. This paper reports on students' career aspirations and motivations for studying, and working in, the field of Early Childhood, at the commencement of their studies. Through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, students reflected on their aspirations and motivations to follow this degree trajectory. This paper purports that students embark on this degree with a generic interest in working with children but are uncertain about career directions. They welcome the breadth of opportunities the degree could lead to. It is therefore argued that "it's ok not to know what I want to do". It is the role of academic and professional staff to embed a breath of opportunities for exposure to the range of career pathways available.

The role of massive ($\geq$ 8M$_{\odot}$) stars in defining the energy budget and chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium in their host galaxy is significant. In this first paper from the Tracing Evolution in Massive Protostellar Objects (TEMPO) project we introduce a colour-luminosity selected (L$_*$ $\sim$ 3$\times10^3$ to 1$\times10^5$ L$_{\odot}$) sample of 38 massive star forming regions observed with ALMA at 1.3mm and explore the fragmentation, clustering and flux density properties of the sample. The TEMPO sample fields are each found to contain multiple fragments (between 2-15 per field). The flux density budget is split evenly (53%-47%) between fields where emission is dominated by a single high flux density fragment and those in which the combined flux density of fainter objects dominates. The fragmentation scales observed in most fields are not comparable with the thermal Jeans length, $\lambda_J$, being larger in the majority of cases, suggestive of some non-thermal mechanism. A tentative evolutionary trend is seen between luminosity of the clump and the `spectral line richness' of the TEMPO fields; with 6.7GHz maser associated fields found to be lower luminosity and more line rich. This work also describes a method of line-free continuum channel selection within ALMA data and a generalised approach used to distinguishing sources which are potentially star-forming from those which are not, utilising interferometric visibility properties., Comment: 42 pages, 17 figures, 4 Tables including 3 Appendices (with additional tables and figures). Abstract By simultaneously achieving high spatial and angular sampling resolution, four dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM) is enabling analysis techniques that provide great insight into the atomic structure of materials. Applying these techniques to scientifically and technologically significant beam-sensitive materials remains challenging because the low doses needed to minimise beam damage lead to noisy data. We demonstrate an unsupervised deep learning model that leverages the continuity and coupling between the probe position and the electron scattering distribution to denoise 4D STEM data. By restricting the network complexity it can learn the geometric flow present but not the noise. Through experimental and simulated case studies, we demonstrate that denoising as a preprocessing step enables 4D STEM analysis techniques to succeed at lower doses, broadening the range of materials that can be studied using these powerful structure characterization techniques.

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

The fragmentation mode of high-mass molecular clumps and the accretion processes that form the most massive stars ($M\gtrsim 8M_\odot$) are still not well understood. To this end, we have undertaken a large observational program (CORE) making use of interferometric observations from the Northern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA) for a sample of 20 luminous ($L>10^4L_\odot$) protostellar objects in the 1.37 mm wavelength regime in both continuum and line emission, reaching $\sim$0.4" resolution (800 au at 2 kpc). Using the dense gas tracer CH$_3$CN, we find velocity gradients across 13 cores perpendicular to the directions of bipolar molecular outflows, making them excellent disk candidates. Specific angular momentum ($j$) radial profiles are on average $\sim10^{-3}$ km /s pc and follow $j \propto r^{1.7}$, consistent with a poorly resolved rotating and infalling envelope/disk model. Fitting the velocity profiles with a Keplerian model, we find protostellar masses in the range of $\sim 10-25$ $M_\odot$. Modelling the level population of CH$_3$CN lines, we present temperature maps and find median gas temperatures in the range $70-210$ K. We create Toomre $Q$ maps to study the stability of the disks and find almost all (11 of 13) disk candidates to be prone to fragmentation due to gravitational instabilities at the scales probed by our observations. In particular, disks with masses greater than $\sim10-20\%$ of the mass of their host (proto)stars are Toomre unstable, and more luminous protostellar objects tend to have disks that are more massive and hence more prone to fragmentation. Our finings show that most disks around high-mass protostars are prone to disk fragmentation early in their formation due to their high disk to stellar mass ratio. Abstract Background Early identification and treatment of chronic disease is associated with better clinical outcomes, lower costs, and reduced hospitalisation. Primary care is ideally placed to identify patients at risk of, or in the early stages of, chronic disease and to implement prevention and early intervention measures. This paper evaluates the implementation of a technological intervention called Future Health Today that integrates with general practice EMRs to (1) identify patients at-risk of, or with undiagnosed or untreated, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and (2) provide guideline concordant recommendations for patient care. The evaluation aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators to successful implementation. Methods Future Health Today was implemented in 12 general practices in Victoria, Australia. Fifty-two interviews with 30 practice staff were undertaken between July 2020 and April 2021. Practice characteristics were collected directly from practices via survey. Data were analysed using inductive and deductive qualitative analysis strategies, using Clinical Performance - Feedback Intervention Theory (CP-FIT) for theoretical guidance. Results Future Health Today was acceptable, user friendly and useful to general practice staff, and supported clinical performance improvement in the identification and management of chronic kidney disease. CP-FIT variables supporting use of FHT included the simplicity of design and delivery of actionable feedback via FHT, good fit within existing workflow, strong engagement with practices and positive attitudes toward FHT. Context variables provided the main barriers to use and were largely situated in the external context of practices (including pressures arising from the COVID-19 pandemic) and technical glitches impacting installation and early use. Participants primarily utilised the point of care prompt rather than the patient management dashboard due to its continued presence, and immediacy and relevance of the recommendations on the prompt, suggesting mechanisms of compatibility, complexity, actionability and credibility influenced use. Most practices continued using FHT after the evaluation phase was complete. Conclusions This study demonstrates that FHT is a useful and acceptable software platform that provides direct support to general practice in identifying and managing patients with CKD. Further research is underway to explore the effectiveness of FHT, and to expand the conditions on the platform.

One approach to three-dimensional structure determination using the wealth of scattering data in four-dimensional (4D) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is the parallax method proposed by Ophus et al. (2019. Advanced phase reconstruction methods enabled by 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, Microsc Microanal25, 10-11), which determines the scattering matrix and uses it to synthesize a virtual depth-sectioning reconstruction of the sample structure. Drawing on an equivalence with a hypothetical confocal imaging mode, we derive contrast transfer and point spread functions for this parallax method applied to weakly scattering objects, showing them identical to earlier depth-sectioning STEM modes when only bright field signal is used, but that improved depth resolution is possible if dark field signal can be used. Through a simulation-based study of doped Si, we show that this depth resolution is preserved for thicker samples, explore the impact of shot noise on the parallax reconstructions, discuss challenges to making use of dark field signal, and identify cases where the interpretation of the parallax reconstruction breaks down.

We present the first high spatial resolution radio continuum survey of the southern Galactic plane. The CORNISH project has mapped the region defined by $295^{\circ} < l < 350^{\circ}$; $|b| < 1^{\circ}$ at 5.5-GHz, with a resolution of 2.5$^{''}$ (FWHM). As with the CORNISH-North survey, this is designed to primarily provide matching radio data to the Spitzer GLIMPSE survey region. The CORNISH-South survey achieved a root mean square noise level of $\sim$ 0.11 mJy beam$^{-1}$, using the 6A configuration of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). In this paper, we discuss the observations, data processing and measurements of the source properties. Above a 7$\sigma$ detection limit, 4701 sources were detected, and their ensemble properties show similar distributions with their northern counterparts. The catalogue is highly reliable and is complete to 90 per cent at a flux density level of 1.1 mJy. We developed a new way of measuring the integrated flux densities and angular sizes of non-Gaussian sources. The catalogue primarily provides positions, flux density measurements and angular sizes. All sources with IR counterparts at 8$\mu m$ have been visually classified, utilizing additional imaging data from optical, near-IR, mid-IR, far-IR and sub-millimetre galactic plane surveys. This has resulted in the detection of 524 H II regions of which 255 are ultra-compact H II regions, 287 planetary nebulae, 79 radio stars and 6 massive young stellar objects. The rest of the sources are likely to be extra-galactic. These data are particularly important in the characterization and population studies of compact ionized sources such as UCHII regions and PNe towards the Galactic mid-plane.

IntroductionIndividuals with limb loss frequently report post-amputation phenomena, including nonpainful phantom sensations, phantom limb pain (PLP), and residual limb pain (RLP). Although post-amputation pain is common, not all patients benefit from widely accepted treatments. A greater understanding of phantom limb “telescoping”, the experience of one's phantom hand or foot gradually approaching the residual limb, may assist in developing more effective interventions for reducing post-amputation pain. This case report explores the relationships between PLP, RLP, telescoping, and psychosocial experience in one person with a lower limb amputation. The aim of this case is to illustrate one possible relationship between telescoping and PLP as the mechanisms linking the two remain equivocal.MethodsThe participant is a 35-year-old male who underwent a transfemoral amputation due to a traumatic injury to his right leg approximately 4 years prior. He responded to questionnaires evaluating demographic and health-related information (e.g., age, sex, marital status, reason for amputation), pain and psychological variables via the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI-SF), ID Pain Questionnaire (IDPQ), Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PSC-4), Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4), Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC2), and Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ-8) and telescoping, measured by a newly developed app. The participant completed a semi-structured interview that was designed to ascertain patterns in the overlapping experience of phantom limb telescoping and post-amputation pain.ResultsThe participant rated his average PLP as 10 on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) from 0 (“no pain”) to 10 (“worst pain imaginable”) shortly after amputation. Approximately 12 months later, the participant noticed a shortening of his phantom limb, with a concurrent decrease in PLP. At present, his average NRS pain intensity is a 5/10. The participant described how the daily, debilitating PLP intensity diminished to weekly, manageable pain over time. Most notably, his responses on questionnaires were consistent with neuropathic PLP, mild to moderate levels of pain interference, a high level of catastrophic thinking about pain, low optimism, and mild symptoms of anxiety and depression.DiscussionIn this report, telescoping appeared to be preceded by an initial reduction in PLP intensity but these findings are based on a single case report and must be replicated with a large sample size before we have a clearer idea of the relationship between telescoping and PLP. This study provides insight into factors that may maintain PLP, generating targets for further investigation.

As a key host protein involved in cellular infection by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)2 is an ideal target for antiviral drugs. Manipulation of transcription provides opportunity for graduated blockade that preserves physiological functions. We sought to develop a model system for evaluating manipulation of ACE2 gene transcription using human retinal pigment epithelium. Retinal pigment epithelial cell isolates were prepared from human posterior eyecups (n = 11 individual isolates). The cells expressed ACE2 transcript and protein, and expression was not induced by hypoxia mimetic dimethyloxaloylglycine, or inflammatory cytokine IL-1β. ACE2 gene transcription factors were predicted in silico and cross-referenced with the human retinal pigment epithelial cell transcriptome, and five candidate transcription factors were identified: ETS proto-oncogene 1 transcription factor (ETS1), nuclear factor I C (NFIC), nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group C member 1 (NR2C1), TEA domain transcription factor 1 (TEAD1), and zinc finger protein 384 (ZNF384). The candidates were individually targeted in cells by transfection with small interfering (si)RNA. Knockdowns reduced mean cellular expression of all the transcription factors in comparison to expression in cells transfected with control non-targeted siRNA. Mean cellular ACE2 transcript was reduced under the condition of NR2C1 knockdown, but not for ETS1, NFIC, TEAD1, and ZNF384 knockdowns. Our findings build on previous work demonstrating the potential for drugging gene transcription. Importantly, we show the value of human retinal pigment epithelium as a system for evaluating ACE2 transcriptional blockade, a possible approach for treating SARS-CoV-2 infection. Objective: Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) has emerged as a safe and effective method for carotid revascularization, offering several key advantages over carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS). Intraoperative transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitoring plays a pivotal role in assessing cerebral hemodynamics and detecting embolic signals during TCAR at our institution. Methods: This review synthesizes the current literature and provides guidance for TCD monitoring throughout the various phases of TCAR, from preoperative assessment to postoperative management. Key considerations include probe placement, waveform evaluation, interpreting monitoring parameters such as mean flow velocity (MFV), pulsatility index (PI), and percentage change in the MFV (Δ%). Techniques for maintaining the insonation of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) M1 segment and optimal parameter settings for intraoperative TCD monitoring are detailed. Results: TCAR phases are highlighted, including transcarotid access and vessel control, sheath insertion, the establishment of flow reversal, pre-dilation, stent placement, post-dilation, and closure, while emphasizing the importance of real-time feedback provided by TCD monitoring in identifying embolic signals and assessing changes in cerebral perfusion. The review discusses limitations of TCD monitoring, such as inadequate temporal windows, incorrect vessel identification and reliability issues with automatic emboli detection counters. Furthermore, practical advice is provided on how to navigate common pitfalls encountered during intraoperative TCD monitoring. Conclusion: By understanding the nuances of TCD monitoring and its application in TCAR, intraoperative TCD monitoring may aid to minimize the low but potential risk of intraprocedural embolic events, periprocedural hypoperfusion and postoperative hyperperfusion. Finally, we suggest opportunities for further research in embolization quantification and additional strategies to optimize quality control in TCAR.

Linking data across local authorities and health boards has the potential to reduce inequalities and improve outcomes. However, cross-agency data sharing leads to complexities around data ownership, legal conditions for processing, organisational controls and risk assessments to ensure privacy and confidentiality of subjects whilst facilitating research and service improvements. We share a governance framework for cross-agency data sharing between a local authority and regional health board in Scotland. A cross-sector Child Neglect working group was established with representation from public sector agencies, the NHS, University researchers and a Trusted Research Environment to support research on children’s mental health prescribing and secondary specialist services provision and linking to the Aberdeen City Council Child Protection Register. Lessons learned were captured throughout the governance, data transfer and data linkage phases. Communication is the most important driver, with key individuals, deputies and routes of escalation agreed and involved throughout for clarity of roles and expectation setting. Key lessons learned include requiring input from all parties at the project initiation stage, particularly IG teams, including agreements on necessary templates. Knowledge exchange is required between the research team, data owners and data processors to ensure research protocol requirements are correctly understood and data transfer is supported. If possible, internal and/or external validation of data should also be performed before data is linked. Cross-agency data sharing is a vital means to understanding and improving outcomes for individuals and populations. Critical to this is establishing an action plan and formalised project process to achieve outcomes.

With steady observational advances, the formation of massive stars is being understood in more detail. Numerical models are converging on a scenario where accretion discs play a key role. Direct observational evidence of such discs at a few au scales is scarce, due to the rarity of such objects and the observational challenges, including the lack of adequate diagnostic lines in the near-IR. We present the analysis of K-band spectro-interferometric observations toward the Massive Young Stellar Object IRAS 13481-6124, which is known to host an accreting dusty disc. Using GRAVITY on the VLTI, we trace the crucial au-scales of the warm inner interface between the star and the accretion dusty disc. We detect and spatially resolve the Na I doublet and He I transitions towards an object of this class for the first time. The new observations in combination with our geometric models allowed us to probe the smallest au-scales of accretion/ejection around an MYSO. We find that Na I originates in the disc at smaller radii than the dust disc and is more compact than any of the other spatially resolved diagnostics (Br$\gamma$, He I, and CO). Our findings suggest that Na I can be a new powerful diagnostic line in tracing the warm star/disc accreting interface of forming (massive) stars, while the similarities between He I and Br$\gamma$ point towards an accretion/ejection origin of He I, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters; 5 pages, 3 Figures

This thesis explores Cisalpine masculinity and warfare over the period c. 400-50 BC and seeks to demonstrate that material cultural changes reflected broader socio-political and military developments. A statistical analysis is undertaken of the composition of weapon burials from the largest and best-documented Gallic necropoleis in Cispadane and Transpadane Gaul. This reveals that specific combinations of La Tène, Golaseccan, and Italic mortuary goods were employed to express an individual's position in an aristocratic hierarchy, and that these differed between Cisalpine Gallic groups in chronological, regional and intra-regional contexts. These results are then compared with how elite masculinity was expressed amongst other contemporary tribal groups from Transalpine Gaul and the Italian and Iberian peninsulas, along with their socio-political and military developments. The second half of the thesis combines these conclusions with an examination of the Graeco-Roman battle narratives involving Cisalpine Gallic forces and constructs the first in-depth analysis of organisational and tactical capabilities of these forces. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the Cisalpine Gallic tribes experienced a significant period of socio-political development during the third century, greatly increasing the sophistication of their warcraft and military forces.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations create continuous shunting of unoxygenated blood through the lungs into the systemic circulation. These malformations are asymptomatic if small, but cause serious symptoms as they grow in size. Treatment primarily consists of endovascular embolization; lobectomy is preserved for recurring or endovascularly untreatable cases. We describe a case of a 24-year-old man who was first treated with coil embolization 10 years previously, with complete symptom resolution. However, more recently he noted recurrent exercise intolerance, with shortness of breath and hypoxemia. After repeat re-embolization, a computed tomography scan noted some persistent flow. Given the patient's young age, we considered resection as a definite therapy. The patient underwent an uncomplicated robot-assisted right lower lobectomy. Afterward, his symptoms resolved completely. In selected cases, robotic lobectomy for pulmonary arteriovenous malformation is feasible and safe.

Aims/hypothesisSouth Asians have a two- to fivefold higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those of white European descent. Greater central adiposity and storage of fat in deeper or ectopic depots are potential contributing mechanisms. We collated existing and new data on the amount of subcutaneous (SAT), visceral (VAT) and liver fat in adults of South Asian and white European descent to provide a robust assessment of potential ethnic differences in these factors.MethodsWe performed a systematic review of the Embase and PubMed databases from inception to August 2021. Unpublished imaging data were also included. The weighted standardised mean difference (SMD) for each adiposity measure was estimated using random-effects models. The quality of the studies was assessed using the ROBINS-E tool for risk of bias and overall certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. The study was pre-registered with the OSF Registries ( https://osf.io/w5bf9 ).ResultsWe summarised imaging data on SAT, VAT and liver fat from eight published and three previously unpublished datasets, including a total of 1156 South Asian and 2891 white European men, and 697 South Asian and 2271 white European women. Despite South Asian men having a mean BMI approximately 0.5-0.7 kg/m2 lower than white European men (depending on the comparison), nine studies showed 0.34 SMD (95% CI 0.12, 0.55; I2=83%) more SAT and seven studies showed 0.56 SMD (95% CI 0.14, 0.98; I2=93%) more liver fat, but nine studies had similar VAT (-0.03 SMD; 95% CI -0.24, 0.19; I2=85%) compared with their white European counterparts. South Asian women had an approximately 0.9 kg/m2 lower BMI but 0.31 SMD (95% CI 0.14, 0.48; I2=53%) more liver fat than their white European counterparts in five studies. Subcutaneous fat levels (0.03 SMD; 95% CI -0.17, 0.23; I2=72%) and VAT levels (0.04 SMD; 95% CI -0.16, 0.24; I2=71%) did not differ significantly between ethnic groups in eight studies of women.Conclusions/interpretationSouth Asian men and women appear to store more ectopic fat in the liver compared with their white European counterparts with similar BMI levels. Given the emerging understanding of the importance of liver fat in diabetes pathogenesis, these findings help explain the greater diabetes risks in South Asians.FundingThere was no primary direct funding for undertaking the systematic review and meta-analysis.

Interactive visualization can support fluid exploration but is often limited to predetermined tasks. Scripting can support a vast range of queries but may be more cumbersome for free-form exploration. Embedding interactive visualization in scripting environments, such as computational notebooks, provides an opportunity to leverage the strengths of both direct manipulation and scripting. We investigate interactive visualization design methodology, choices, and strategies under this paradigm through a design study of calling context trees used in performance analysis, a field which exemplifies typical exploratory data analysis workflows with Big Data and hard to define problems. We first produce a formal task analysis assigning tasks to graphical or scripting contexts based on their specificity, frequency, and suitability. We then design a notebook-embedded interactive visualization and validate it with intended users. In a follow-up study, we present participants with multiple graphical and scripting interaction modes to elicit feedback about notebook-embedded visualization design, finding consensus in support of the interaction model. For topological magnon spectra, determining and explaining the presence of a gap at a magnon crossing point is a key to characterize the topological properties of the system. An inelastic neutron scattering study of a single crystal is a powerful experimental technique that is widely employed to probe the magnetic excitation spectra of topological materials. Here, we show that when the scattering intensity rapidly disperses in the vicinity of a crossing point, such as a Dirac point, the apparent topological gap size is extremely sensitive to experimental conditions including sample mosaic, resolution, and momentum integration range. We demonstrate these effects using comprehensive neutron-scattering measurements of CrCl$_3$. Our measurements confirm the gapless nature of the Dirac magnon in CrCl$_3$, but also reveal an artificial, i.e. extrinsic, magnon gap unless the momentum integration range is carefully controlled. Our study provides an explanation of the apparent discrepancies between spectroscopic and first-principles estimates of Dirac magnon gap sizes, and provides guidelines for accurate spectroscopic measurement of topological magnon gaps., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures

Abstract Background Chronic kidney disease affects more than 10% of the world’s population and is a non-communicable disease of global concern and priority. There is a significant implementation gap between best practice guideline recommendations and current kidney disease management. Previous research has shown the need to partner with primary care to improve education, collaboration, and kidney disease awareness. This implementation trial will explore use of an innovative clinical decision support software, Future Health Today, to improve screening, diagnosis, and management of kidney disease in primary care. The program will be supported by tertiary care outreach services. The primary aim is to test the hypothesis that the Future Health Today implementation program will improve screening, diagnosis, and management of kidney disease. Secondary aims are to evaluate primary care satisfaction and broader health service impacts. Methods This pre-post implementation trial using an interrupted time series design will evaluate the clinical and service outcomes of Future Health Today, using a mixed methods study in twenty general practices with an estimated population size of 150,000. Deidentified patient data will be extracted from participating practices to examine the primary aims of the study. Surveys and semi-structured interviews with general practice will inform secondary hypotheses. Data linkage between primary care and tertiary care data will examine the broader health service impacts. Discussion This investigator driven trial will assess the impact of Future Health Today software coupled with education and clinical outreach support. Investigators hypothesise that there will be improvement in appropriate screening, diagnosis, and management of kidney disease. This program has the potential to be scaled more broadly. Objectives: To date, studies have not provided definitive answers regarding whether previous immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment alters outcomes for cancer patients with COVID-19. Methods: The OnCovid registry (NCT04393974) was searched from February 27, 2020, to January 31, 2022, for patients who received systemic anti-cancer therapy in the 4 weeks before laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. Propensity-score matching using country, vaccination status, primary tumor type, sex, age, comorbidity burden, tumor stage, and remission status investigated differences in predefined clinical outcomes comparing those who had or had not received ICIs. Results: Of 3523 patients screened, 137 ICI-only and 1378 non-ICI met inclusion criteria. Before matching, ICI patients were older, male, enrolled at centers in Italy, and had histories of smoking, thoracic cancers, advanced cancer stages, and active malignancies (P ≤0.02). After matching, there were 120 ICI and 322 non-ICI patients. ICI patients had no differences (odds ratio: 95% CI) in presenting COVID-19 symptoms (0.69: 0.37-1.28), receipt of COVID-specific therapy (0.88: 0.54-1.41), 14-day (0.95: 0.56-1.61), or 28-day (0.79: 0.48-1.29) mortalities. However, ICI patients required less COVID-19-related hospitalization (0.37: 0.21-0.67) and oxygen therapy (0.51: 0.31-0.83) and developed fewer complications (0.57: 0.36-0.92). Conclusion: In this propensity-score matched analysis, previous ICI therapy did not worsen and potentially improved COVID-19 outcomes in patients with cancer.

While multi-institutional actions have led to significant improvements in the inclusion of women in trials, inequity persists in areas like sex-neutral cancers and cardiovascular disease. We sought to identify strategies described or evaluated to boost the inclusion of women in clinical trials. Methods We used evidence mapping methodology to examine the breadth of relevant literature. We developed an a priori protocol and followed reporting guidance from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis where applicable. We searched MEDLINE® (via PubMed) and EMBASE (via Elsevier) databases from inception through April 4, 2023, and used standardized procedures incorporating duplication and data verification. We included articles that described strategies to improve the recruitment and retention of women in clinical trials. Results We identified 122 articles describing recruitment and retention strategies for 136 trials (377,595 women). Only one article distinguished between the sex and gender identity of participants, and none defined their use of the terms such as “women” or “female”. The majority of articles (95%) described recruitment for only women, and 64% were conducted in the USA. Ninety-two articles (75%) described strategies in the context of sex-specific conditions (e.g., gynecologic diagnosis). The majority of included articles evaluated a behavioral intervention (52%), with 23% evaluating pharmacologic interventions and 4% invasive interventions. The most common trial phase for reported strategies was during outreach to potential participants (116 articles), followed by intervention delivery (76), enrollment (40), outcomes assessment (21), analysis and interpretation (3), and dissemination (4). We describe specific types of strategies within each of these phases. Conclusions Most of the existing literature describing strategies to improve the inclusion of women draws from trials for sex-specific conditions and is largely related to outreach to potential participants. There is little information about how and if studies have attempted to proportionally increase the inclusion of women in trials with both men and women or those focused on invasive and pharmacologic interventions. Future work in this area should focus on how to increase the participation of women in mixed-sex studies and on those areas with remaining inequities in trial participation.

41. 'Early Childhood Studies Is More than a Degree; It Is an Experience': Undergraduate Students' Motivations, Professional Aspirations and Attributes

- Abstract
This mixed methods study sought the views of early childhood studies students from three universities in England. The research explored motivations, professional aspirations and the attributes they believed were required to work in early childhood. Findings highlighted that the holistic study of early childhood is valued by students and placements offered a "space" where they grew and flourished, as they made sense of where their "personal" intersected with wider theoretical, practice and political systems embedded in early childhood. Students follow a range of career trajectories, either by choice or because there is no specific practitioner role underpinned by the holistic study of early childhood. This study also revealed factors that led to their choice and place of study, as well as the ways that students' personal circumstances affected their studies, reinforcing the importance of academic and pastoral support. Very significantly, this research led to discussions about the core purpose of the early childhood studies degree and helped to inform the development of the Graduate Competencies as an addition to ECS degrees that included placements.

- Abstract
Just as illness can sometimes heal us, some have speculated an unexpected silver lining of COVID-19 may be an invigoration of a prosocial vision as the 'new normal' necessitates new ways of thinking and doing things differently across society and in preschool. This article explores this and reports survey research completed with preschool practitioners post-lockdown across several locations in England and the USA. This repeated a previous survey we did in 2014 which found notable levels of 'social distancing' -- that is restrictions in social connection between preschool practitioners and children and their parents in poverty. Yet, since 2014 with austerity and then COVID-19, the pressure, and need, for prosocial preschool systems to work flexibly and inclusively with children and families in poverty has never been greater. We report findings from our 2021 survey and raise some concerns in the context of COVID-19 recovery policies emerging across both countries post-lockdown.

43. The Correlation between Female Veteran Mental Health and Branch of Military Service

- Abstract
Purpose: While military mental health has been a topic of interest in recent years, the relationship between branch of military service and female veteran mental health outcomes has been under-explored. Female veterans are six times more likely to commit suicide than civilian counterparts, and present posttraumatic stress (PTS) rates that sit at approximately 20% (with some studies reporting statistics up to 50%), along with 20-30% for depressive disorders. Seeking to more fully understand what contributes to these issues is a necessary step in creating programming designed to improve outcomes and prevent death by suicide in women veterans. Methods: Researchers conducted a secondary analysis of data collected by the Service Women's Action Network (SWAN) in their 2017 needs assessment of women veterans. Quantitative analyses included multinomial regression tests and one-way ANOVA tests of dependent variables, with branch of military service as the independent variable. Results: Statistically significant differences between branches of service were found in respondent questions asking about the following: impact of service on mental health, impact of service on physical health, and existing depression diagnoses. Additional analyses of questions regarding stress injury, self-harm, and attitudes toward mental health treatment did not show significant difference. Conclusions: Many factors impact the mental wellbeing of service women. The experiences of unit cohesion, the incidence of trauma, or the availability of a network of peers on which to rely all change the operating environment for a military woman. To date, insufficient research has examined the role of service branch on mental health outcomes in veteran women, a knowledge gap the present study sought to fill. Recommendations: The results of the study provide important feedback for service branches and the veteran care sector as they consider predictors for adverse health outcomes in women veterans. Tailoring culturally-competent outreach to service women in indicated, as is continuing to increase understanding of the military woman's transition experience.

[Context.] Gaia is limited in the optical down to G~21 mag so it is essential to understand the biases introduced by a magnitude-limited sample on spatial distribution studies. [Aims.] We ascertain how sample incompleteness in Gaia observations of young clusters affects the local spatial analysis tool INDICATE and subsequently the perceived spatial properties of these clusters. [Methods.] We created a mock Gaia cluster catalogue from a synthetic dataset using the observation generating tool MYOSOTIS. The effect of cluster distance, uniform and variable extinction, binary fraction, population masking by the point spread function wings of high-mass members, and contrast sensitivity limits on the trends identified by INDICATE are explored. A comparison of the typical index values derived by INDICATE for members of the synthetic dataset and their corresponding mock Gaia catalogue observations is made to identify any significant changes. [Results.] We typically find only small variations in the pre- and post-observation index values of cluster populations, which can increase as a function of incompleteness percentage and binarity. No significant strengthening, or false signatures, of stellar concentrations are found but real signatures may be diluted. Conclusions drawn about the spatial behaviour of Gaia-observed cluster populations that are, and are not, associated with their natal nebulosity are reliable for most clusters but the perceived behaviours of individual members can change so INDICATE should be used as a measure of spatial behaviours between members as a function of their intrinsic properties (e.g. mass, age, object type), rather than to draw conclusions about any specific observed member. Increasing evidence suggests that, similar to their low-mass counterparts, high-mass stars form through a disk-mediated accretion process. At the same time, formation of high-mass stars still necessitates high accretion rates, and hence, high gas densities, which in turn can cause disks to become unstable against gravitational fragmentation. We study the kinematics and fragmentation of the disk around the high-mass star forming region AFGL 2591-VLA 3 which was hypothesized to be fragmenting based on the observations that show multiple outflow directions. We use a new set of high-resolution (0.19 arcsec) IRAM/NOEMA observations at 843 micron towards VLA 3 which allow us to resolve its disk, characterize the fragmentation, and study its kinematics. In addition to the 843 micron continuum emission, our spectral setup targets warm dense gas and outflow tracers such as HCN, HC$_3$N and SO$_2$, as well as vibrationally excited HCN lines. The high resolution continuum and line emission maps reveal multiple fragments with subsolar masses within the inner 1000 AU of VLA 3. Furthermore, the velocity field of the inner disk observed at 843 micron shows a similar behavior to that of the larger scale velocity field studied in the CORE project at 1.37 mm. We present the first observational evidence for disk fragmentation towards AFGL 2591-VLA 3, a source that was thought to be a single high-mass core. While the fragments themselves are low-mass, the rotation of the disk is dominated by the protostar with a mass of 10.3$\pm 1.8~M_{\odot}$. These data also show that NOEMA Band 4 can obtain the highest currently achievable spatial resolution at (sub-)mm wavelengths in observations of strong northern sources., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A
