Quantum Physics - Abstract
In this paper we present Quanrum Encoded Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm (QEQEA) and compare its performance against a a classical GPU accelerated Genetic Algorithm (GPUGA). The proposed QEQEA differs from existing quantum evolutionary algorithms in several points: representation of candidates circuits is using qubits and qutrits and the proposed evolutionary operators can in theory be implemented on quantum computer provided a classical control exists. The synthesized circuits are obtained by a set of measurements performed on the encoding units of quantum representation. Both algorithms are accelerated in GPGPU. The main target of this paper, is not to propose a completely novel quantum genetic algorithm but to rather experimentally estimate the advantages of certain components of genetic algorithm being encoded and implemented in a quantum compatible manner. The algorithms are compared and evaluated on several reversible and quantum circuits. The results demonstrate that on one hand the quantum encoding and quantum implementation compatible implementation provides certain disadvantages with respect to the classical evolutionary computation. On the other hand, encoding certain components in a quantum compatible manner could in theory allow to accelerate the search. This acceleration would in turn counter weight the implementation limitations., Comment: 7 figures, 8 pagges

Increasing ecosystem service provision is a key strategy of the UK’s ongoing agricultural and environmental policy reforms. Enhancing forest cover by 4%, particularly on the least productive agricultural land, aims to maximise carbon sequestration and achieve net zero by 2050. Multiple factors affect the sequestration potential of afforestation schemes and landowner participation in them, highlighting the need for spatially explicit research. We used the InVEST Carbon Model to investigate the Loddon Catchment, southeast England as a study area. We assessed the carbon sequestration potential and economic feasibility of three broadleaved woodland planting scenarios; arable, pasture, and stakeholder-approved (SA) scenario. We found that over a 50-year time horizon, woodland planting on arable land has the greatest sequestration potential (4.02 tC ha−1 yr−1), compared to planting on pasture land (3.75 tC ha−1 yr−1). When monetising carbon sequestration at current market rates, woodland planting on agricultural land incurs a loss across all farm types. However, when including the value of unpaid labour, lowland pasture farms presently incur a greater loss (−€285.14 ha−1 yr−1) than forestry (−€273.16 ha−1 yr−1), making forestry a more economical land use. Subsidising up to the social value of carbon (€342.23 tC−1) significantly reduces this loss and may make afforestation of pasture land more appealing to farmers. Woodland planting on lowland pasture land would increase forest cover by up to 3.62%. However, due to the influence of farmer attitudes on participation, it is more realistic for afforestation to occur on lowland pasture land in the SA scenario, equating to a 0.74% increase.

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
In this paper the intermediary visual content verification method based on multi-level co-occurrences is studied. The co-occurrence statistics are in general used to determine relational properties between objects based on information collected from data. As such these measures are heavily subject to relative number of occurrences and give only limited amount of accuracy when predicting objects in real world. In order to improve the accuracy of this method in the verification task, we include the context information such as location, type of environment etc. In order to train our model we provide new annotated dataset the Advanced Attribute VOC (AAVOC) that contains additional properties of the image. We show that the usage of context greatly improve the accuracy of verification with up to 16% improvement., Comment: 6 pages, 6 Figures, Published in Proceedings of the Information and Digital Technology Conference, 2017

Quantum Physics ,Computer Science - Emerging Technologies - Abstract
A critical analysis of the feasibility of reversible computing is performed. The key question is: Is it possible to build a completely reversible computer? A closer look into the internal aspects of the reversible computing as well as the external constraints such as the second law of thermodynamics has demonstrated that several difficulties would have to be solved before reversible computer is being built. It is shown that a conventional reversible computer would require energy for setting up the reversible inputs from irreversible signals, for the reading out of the reversible outputs, for the transport of the information between logic elements and finally for the control signals that will require more energy dissipating into the environment. A loose bound on the minimum amount of energy required to be dissipated during the physical implementation of a reversible computer is obtained and a generalization of the principles for reversible computing is provided., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Quantum Physics - Abstract
In this paper we present a method for minimizing reversible quantum circuits using the Quantum Operator Form (QOF); a new representation of quantum circuit and of quantum-realized reversible circuits based on the CNOT, CV and CV$^\dagger$ quantum gates. The proposed form is a quantum extension to the well known Reed-Muller but unlike the Reed-Muller form, the QOF allows the usage of different quantum gates. Therefore QOF permits minimization of quantum circuits by using properties of different gates than only the multi-control Toffoli gates. We introduce a set of minimization rules and a pseudo-algorithm that can be used to design circuits with the CNOT, CV and CV$^\dagger$ quantum gates. We show how the QOF can be used to minimize reversible quantum circuits and how the rules allow to obtain exact realizations using the above mentioned quantum gates., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, Proceedings of the ULSI Workshop 2012 (@ISMVL 2012)

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
In this paper we present an alternative method to symbolic segmentation: we approach symbolic segmentation as an algorithm selection problem. That is, let there be a set A of available algorithms for symbolic segmentation, a set of input features $F$, a set of image attribute $\mathbb{A}$ and a selection mechanism $S(F,\mathbb{A},A)$ that selects on a case by case basis the best algorithm. The semantic segmentation is then an optimization process that combines best component segments from multiple results into a single optimal result. The experiments compare three different algorithm selection mechanisms using three selected semantic segmentation algorithms. The results show that using the current state of art algorithms and relatively low accuracy of algorithm selection the accuracy of the semantic segmentation can be improved by 2\%., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1505.07934

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
In this paper we present an alternative approach to symbolic segmentation; instead of implementing a new method we approach symbolic segmentation as an algorithm selection problem. That is, let there be $n$ available algorithms for symbolic segmentation, a selection mechanism forms a set of input features and image attributes and selects on a case by case basis the best algorithm. The selection mechanism is demonstrated from within an algorithm framework where the selection is done in a set of various algorithm networks. Two sets of experiments are performed and in both cases we demonstrate that the algorithm selection allows to increase the result of the symbolic segmentation by a considerable amount.

Humic substances (HSs) constitute a primary component of soil organic matter (SOM) and play a crucial role in soil formation and fertility. However, comprehensive information regarding quantitative and qualitative changes in HS following biochar's application to soil still needs to be improved. This study reports on the impact of biochar application at rates of 0, 10, and 20 t ha
−1 (B0, B10, B20), both with and without nitrogen fertilisation at varying levels (N0, N1, N2), on SOM and HS contents throughout the cropping seasons between 2014 and 2019. The findings reveal changes in SOM and HS contents due to biochar addition and fertilisation. Notably, the most substantial increase in soil organic carbon content was observed in the B20N1 and B10N1 treatments, in stark contrast with the reference B0N0 treatment. A decrease in humification of SOM was noted across all treatments involving biochar, whether alone or combined with different N fertilisation levels. An interesting positive change in HS contents was observed in B10N2, where an increase in humic acids and a decrease in fulvic acids enhanced HS stability and improved HS quality. These findings shed light on the intricate dynamics of SOM and HSs in response to biochar application and nitrogen fertilisation over multiple vegetation seasons of crops on loamy Haplic Luvisols in Central Europe. Seismic - Abstract
In conjunction with Caltech and the Geophysical Institute of Peru, we installed our network of 49 seismic sites across steep and shallow subduction regions in Peru. Flat slab subduction is thought to have formed much of the major geology of the western United States some 100 million years ago. By examining such processes presently active in Central and South America we can piece together the history. The data from the Peruvian sites is delivered to UCLA every night and we have collected almost 1 year so far. In the GeoNet experiment, the science objective is to use a rapidly installable wirelessly linked seismic network to make near-real time unaliased observations in aftershock or volcanic zones. The immediate technical objective is to collaborate with Reftek to construct a new generation digital acquisition system (DAS) based on the CENS-developed LEAP (low-power energy aware processing) system and a newly developed low-power A/D converter from Texas Instruments. We also look into the possibility of using the cell phones for seismic data collection and research. Phones are increasingly being equipped with not only accelerometers, but also cameras, Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and Internet connectivity. This makes them very attractive for use in data mining. We have tested a number of small USB accelerometers and a cell phone on a shake table and the results are encouraging.

Seismic - Abstract
This work describes preliminary results from a 50 station broadband seismic network recently installed from the coast to the high Andes in Peru. UCLA's Center for Embedded Network Sensing (CENS) and Caltech's Tectonic Observatory are collaborating with the IRD (French L'Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement) and the Institute of Geophysics, in Lima Peru in a broadband seismic experiment that will study the transition from steep to shallow slab subduction. The currently installed line has stations located above the steep subduction zone at a spacing of about 6 km. In 2009 we plan to install a line of 50 stations north from this line along the crest of the Andes, crossing the transition from steep to shallow subduction. A further line from the end of that line back to the coast, completing a U shaped array, is in the planning phase. The network is wirelessly linked using multi-hop network software designed by computer scientists in CENS in which data is transmitted from station to station, and collected at Internet drops, from where it is transmitted over the Internet to CENS each night. The instrument installation in Peru is almost finished and we have been receiving data daily from 47 stations (out of total 49) since Jan 2009. Two remain without any network connectivity. The software system provides dynamic link quality based routing, reliable data delivery, and a disruption tolerant shell interface for managing the system from UCLA without the need to travel to Peru. The near real-time data delivery also allows immediate detection of any problems at the sites. We are building a seismic data and GPS quality control toolset that would greatly minimize the station's downtime by alerting the users of any possible problems.

Seismic - Abstract
CENS research related to developing and implementing structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is advancing on two distinct but related fronts: ShakeNet, a portable wireless sensor network for rapid, post-event deployments and SHMnet, a novel SHM system for permanent monitoring of tall buildings and special structures in Los Angeles. The primary objective of the SHMnet research is the development of a robust SHM system along with the associated hardware and software, using tall and special structures (e.g., bridges, port structures, dams) in Los Angeles as a testbed. More specifically, the development of a wireless Data Acquisition (DAQ) toolbox suitable for rapid urban deployments, a suite of state-of-the-art sensors for monitoring key structural responses including innovative methods for directly measuring interstory displacements, and probabilistic post-event assessment algorithms based on experimental motion-damage relationships. Progress on these fronts is highlighted. One rather unique aspect of this research stems from partnerships with strong-motion instrumentation programs (SMIPs) such as CSMIP, ANSS, and the LA-DBS. The proposed SHMnet leverages both building access and instrumentation requirements already facilitated by one or more SMIPs. However, a critical look at structural instrumentation guidelines of various SMIP agencies exposed a lack of uniformity of experience-based specifications. To this end, we sought to establish a quantitative basis for key structural instrumentation specifications, namely sample rate, resolution, and time synchronization. This was accomplished by analyzing signal errors associated with data acquisition processes and engineering sensitivity analyses of several intensity measures and engineering demand parameters. Results from these studies will be useful in updating current structural instrumentation specifications of major SMIPs as well as provide specifications for SHMnet tools. ShakeNet is a portable wireless sensor network for instrumenting large civil structures such as buildings and bridges. The focus of ShakeNet design is to take advantage of wireless technology for deployments in structural environments where power or communications infrastructure is nonexistent or unavailable. It is designed to collect structural vibration measurements for up to a week from each node within the network by deployment in large structures within hours after an earthquake. It will consist of 25 sensor nodes and 5 to 10 master-tier nodes (Stargates or other embedded computers) that provide increased communications capacity. The ShakeNet software subsystem is built upon Tenet; programmable wireless sensing software designed for multi-tier sensor networks. ShakeNet will be deployed and tested on several structures that represent a range of structure types, environments, ages, and degrees of retrofit. They include the Seven Oaks Dam in Redlands, CA, the Santa Ana River Bridge in Riverside, CA, 1100 Wilshire Blvd. in downtown Los Angeles, CA, and the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, CA.
