It is possible that the ventilator model can influence the need for higher or lower pressure levels.Research Question: To determine the differences between ventilators in a bench model with an increased inspiratory demand; and to compare the degree of muscular unloading measured by parasternal electromyogram (EMGpara) provided by the different ventilators in real patients with stable COPD.Patients and Methods: Bench: four levels of increasing progressive effort were programmed. The response of nine ventilators to four levels of PS and EPAP of 5 cm H2O was studied. The pressure-time product was determined at 300 and 500 msec (PTP 300/500).Clinical Study: The ventilators were divided into two groups, based on the result of the bench test. Severe COPD patients with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) were studied, randomly comparing the performance of one ventilator from each group. Muscle unloading was measured by the decrease in EMGpara from its baseline value.Results: There were significant differences in PTP 300 and PTP 500 in the bench study. Based on these results, home ventilators were classified into two groups; group 1 included four models with higher PTP 300. Ten COPD patients were recruited for the clinical study. 6. Finite volume effects on the electric polarizability of neutral hadrons in lattice QCD

Abstract

We study the finite volume effects on the electric polarizability for the neutron, neutral pion, and neutral kaon using eight dynamically generated two-flavor nHYP-clover ensembles at two different pion masses: 306(1) and 227(2) MeV. An infinite volume extrapolation is performed for each hadron at both pion masses. For the neutral kaon, finite volume effects are relatively mild. The dependence on the quark mass is also mild and a reliable chiral extrapolation can be performed along with the infinite volume extrapolation. Our result is $\alpha_{K^0}^\mbox{phys}=0.356(74) \times 10^{-4} \mbox{fm}^3$. In contrast, for neutron the electric polarizability depends strongly on the volume. After removing the finite volume corrections, our neutron polarizability results are in good agreement with $\chi$PT. For the connected part of the neutral pion polarizability, the negative trend persists, and it is not due to finite volume effects, but likely sea quark charging effects., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. 8. Finite volume study of electric polarizabilities from lattice QCD

Abstract

Knowledge of the electric polarizability is crucial to understanding the interactions of hadrons with electromagnetic fields. The neutron polarizability is very sensitive to the quark mass and is expected to diverge in the chiral limit. Here we present results for the electric polarizability of the neutron, neutral pion, and neutral kaon on eight ensembles with nHYP-smeared clover dynamical fermions with two different pion masses (227 and 306 MeV). These are currently the lightest pion masses used in polarizability studies. For each pion mass we compute the polarizability at four different volumes and perform an infinite volume extrapolation for the three hadrons. Along with the infinite volume extrapolation we conduct a chiral extrapolation for the kaon polarizability to the physical point. We compare our results for the neutron polarizability to predictions from chiral perturbation theory., Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We take a new approach to determine the scale parameter $r_0$, the physical masses of strange and charm quarks through a global fit which incorporates continuum extrapolation, chiral extrapolation and quark mass interpolation to the lattice data. The charmonium and charm-strange meson spectrum are calculated with overlap valence quarks on $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD Collaboration. We use the masses of $D_s$, $D_s^*$ and $J/\psi$ as inputs and obtain $m_c^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=1.110(24)\,{\rm GeV}$, $m_s^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=0.104(9)\,{\rm GeV}$ and $r_0=0.458(11)\,{\rm fm}$. Subsequently, the hyperfine-splitting of charmonium and $f_{D_s}$ are predicted to be $112(5)\,{\rm MeV}$ and $254(5)\,{\rm MeV}$, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, POS for lattice 2013

Abstract

A direct calculation of the mixed-action parameter $\Delta_{mix}$ with valence overlap fermions on a domain-wall fermion sea is presented. The calculation is performed on four ensembles of the 2+1-flavor domain-wall gauge configurations: $24^3 \times 64$ ($a m_l= 0.005$, $a=0.114\fm$) and $32^3 \times 64$ ($a m_l = 0.004, 0.006, 0.008$, $a=0.085\fm$). For pion masses close to $300\MeV$ we find \hbox{$\Delta_{mix}=0.030(6)\GeV^4$} at $a=0.114\fm$ and $\Delta_{mix}=0.033(12)\GeV^4$ at $a=0.085\fm$. The results are quite independent of the lattice spacing and they are significantly smaller than the results for valence domain-wall fermions on Asqtad sea or those of valence overlap fermions on clover sea. Combining the results extracted from these two ensembles, we get $\Delta_{mix}=0.030(6)(5)\GeV^4$, where the first error is statistical and the second is the systematic error associated with the fitting method., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

16. Large-scale sand body dynamics and sediment routing on a low-supply continental shelf: The example of the Tarifa continental shelf

Abstract

The Southern Atlantic Spanish continental margin extending from Tarifa to the Gracia Point is characterized by a narrow, sediment-starved continental shelf exposed to an intense hydrodynamic regime resulting from the combination of tidal currents, wind-driven storms and oceanic currents near the Strait of Gibraltar. This area is a good example to study sediment routing across a dispersive margin. Its coastal domain is characterized by highly mobile subaerial dunes (Navarro et al., 2011). However, the adjacent continental shelf remains poorly studied. In this sense, recent surveys led by the University of Cadiz allowed to characterize the major morpho-stratigraphic features of the shelf and to provide a first assessment of prevailing sedimentary processes (Lujan et al., 2011). Deformed basement rocks mainly formed by Flysch Complex units outcrop at the seabed over extensive shelf areas. These rocks are part of the Betic-Rif thrust wedge and are locally covered by Pliocene to Quaternary deposits. The sedimentary cover is molded by different fields of bedforms such as submarine dunes and comets marks that indicate the influence of hydrodynamics processes. Shelf sediment transport patterns seem to be eventually captured by a submarine channel that provides an efficient mechanism for sediment export toward deep-water settings. Nevertheless, major sediment transport pathways are still to be characterized across the continental shelf. A new data set allowed to further investigate sediment bedform distributionoff Gracia Point . Results obtained so far have revealed the occurrence of a sandy banner bank located offshore Gracia Point. The bank extends over an area of 20 km² from -10 to -90 m water depths. The banner bank is covered by a field of very large dunes, where individual dunes exhibit significative short-term (i.e., annual) displacements ranging from 0 to 10 m with an apparent westward migration trend parallel to the coastline influenced by a continental margin-scale

Abstract

Purpose: In this paper, a new automated procedure based on deep learning methods for schizophrenia diagnosis is presented. Methods: To this aim, electroencephalogram signals obtained using a 32-channel helmet are prominently used to analyze high temporal resolution information from the brain. By these means, the data collected is employed to evaluate the class likelihoods using a neuronal network based on radial basis functions and a fuzzy means algorithm. Results: The results obtained with real datasets validate the high accuracy of the proposed classification method. Thus, effectively characterizing the changes in EEG signals acquired from schizophrenia patients and healthy volunteers. More specifically, values of accuracy better than 93% has been obtained in the present research. Additionally, a comparative study with other approaches based on well-knows machine learning methods shows that the proposed method provides better results than recently proposed algorithms in schizophrenia detection. Abstract

El presente trabajo se realizó en el arroyo El Chacay y en el río Las Albahacas desde la primavera de 1999 hasta la primavera de 2000. El objetivo de esta investigación fue comparar la composición y abundancia de la comunidad diatómica en ríos y arroyos serranos de la cuenca del río Piedra Blanca, durante un ciclo anual. En total, 121 taxa (especies, variedades y formas) fueron registrados a partir del análisis taxonómico. El orden Pennales predominó en número de especies y porcentaje de frecuencia relativa. El género con mayor número de especies fue Navicula. El número de especies osciló entre un mínimo de 21 en invierno de 2000 en el río Las Albahacas (aguas arriba del balneario) y un máximo de 49 en verano de 2000 en el arroyo El Chacay y en primavera de 2000 en el río Las Albahacas (aguas arriba del balneario), respectivamente. El mayor número de especies corresponde a los menores porcentajes de frecuencia. La densidad osciló entre 1 org.ml-1 en otoño de 2000 en el río Las Albahacas, aguas arriba del balneario y 1596,40 org.ml-1 registrados en primavera de 1999 en el arroyo El Chacay. Los parámetros fisicoquímicos y la composición de especies determinaron una mayor afinidad entre los sitios en la estación de primavera.The present work was developed in El Chacay Creek and Las Albahacas River from 1999 spring to 2000 spring. The aim of this investigation was to compare the composition and abundance of the diatom communities of a highland water stream and a river within the Piedra Blanca River basin, during an annual cycle. As a result of a taxonomic analysis a total of 121 taxa (species, varieties and forms) were recorded. The Order Pennales predominated in number of species and relative frequency. The genus with the highest number of species was Navicula. The total number of species varied from a minimum of 21 in 2000 winter season in the Las Albahacas River (upstream riverside resort) to a maximun of 49 in 2000 summer in the El Chacay Creek and during 2000 spring in the Las Albahacas River (upstream riverside resort) respectively. The occurrence of a number of species with low frequency was noticed. The density varied from a minimun of 1 org.ml-1 in 2000 fall in the Las Albahacas River, upstream riverside resort, to a maximum of 1596,4 org.ml-1 in 1999 spring at El Chacay Creek. The physical and chemical factors as well as the species composition, a more similarity was found for the spring season in all studied spots.

Abstract

Central venous catheterization (CVC) is a common procedure performed daily for its outnumbered indications, complication rates range are up to 15%. The previous puncture with a fine needle with the Seldinger technique can reduce even more the possible complications, guaranteeing a high percentage of success. The objective was to determine the number of CVC per puncture with Seldinger technique performed by general surgery residents and identify number and type of mechanical complications, related to the residence year. A descriptive transversal cut study has been carried out, between March and November of 2014. A number of 243 patients were evaluated, observing that 41% of the cases were to measure CVP and hemodynamic monitoring; 76% of the punctures were done by 1º and 2º year residents, presenting only 10% on mechanic complications, most frequently on arterial puncture. In conclusion, previous puncture with needle with the Seldinger technique is safer, more secure, lower cost, and reduces the number of complications, it is a variant puncture under ultrasound guidance.
