CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Compreender e mapear padrões de distribuição de espécies é fundamental para a biogeografia e a ecologia, além de subsidiar ações de conservação. As epífitas são um grupo funcional com elevada riqueza e abundância em florestas neotropicais, além da sensibilidade às variações ambientais, tornando-as bom modelo no estudo de padrões de distribuição. A Floresta Atlântica (FA) é um dos hotspots mundiais de biodiversidade e é o domínio fitogeográfico brasileiro com maior riqueza e endemismo de epífitas. O Domínio Atlântico apresenta considerável amplitude altitudinal, principalmente na porção sul, e a Serra da Mantiqueira (SM) é uma cadeia montanhosa com as maiores cotas altimétricas. Na SM, a partir de 1200m de altitude, ocorrem as florestas nebulares, caracterizadas pela constância de névoa e destacada presença de epífitas, e um subtipo, as nanoflorestas, estão ameaçadas pelas mudanças climáticas globais. Para conhecer e compreender os padrões de distribuição e riqueza de epífitas vasculares em diferentes escalas, a tese é apresentada em três capítulos. O capítulo um objetivou refinar o mapeamento da distribuição da riqueza e endemismo de epífitas vasculares e compreender os fatores abióticos responsáveis pela riqueza e substituição de espécies no Bloco Sul da Floresta Atlântica (BSFA). Para isso foram utilizados bancos de dados e gerados dois Modelos de Dissimilaridade Generalizada (GDM). Foram encontradas quatro regiões apresentando alta riqueza e endemismo e confirmado um gradiente de riqueza e substituição de espécies entre as áreas costeiras e interioranas, assim como entre as regiões de baixada e montanhosa. Os principais preditores obtidos nos GDMs foram a distância geográfica, cobertura de nuvens e sazonalidade de temperatura. A heterogeneidade topográfica e respectivas mudanças climáticas são responsáveis por aumentar a riqueza e substituição de espécies de epífitas vasculares na BSFA. No capítulo dois, o objetivo foi listar as espécies de epífitas vasculares presentes nas florestas nebulares da SM. Foram realizadas coletas ao longo da cadeia montanhosa e compilação de banco de dados. As florestas nebulares da SM 7 apresentaram 678 espécies, algo em torno de 20% e 30% das espécies brasileiras e da Floresta Atlântica, respectivamente. As famílias mais ricas, Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae e Polypodiaceae confirmaram os padrões obtidos em diferentes escalas. Um grande número de espécies ameaçadas nos níveis nacional e estaduais ressaltam a importância de conservação dos remanescentes existentes na SM. No capítulo três, os objetivos foram investigar a distribuição de riqueza e composição de espécies ao longo do gradiente altitudinal nas nanoflorestas da SM e avaliar a influência de variáveis climáticas e topográficas. Foram estabelecidas parcelas ao longo da SM em diferentes altitudes para a investigar a distribuição nas escalas local e regional. A riqueza de espécies foi comparada através de rarefação e a composição foi avaliada por análise de similaridade e correlação com fatores ambientais. Na escala local não foram encontrados picos intermediários de riqueza, mas, regionalmente, a faixa altitudinal entre 1500m e 1700m apresentou maior riqueza, principalmente comparada a faixas acima destas, onde as baixas temperaturas atuam como um filtro ambiental, limitando a riqueza mesmo com maior precipitação. Ao longo da SM a composição é afetada por diferenças climáticas relacionadas a sazonalidade, agrupando parcelas da mesma localidade, mesmo com a distância geográfica não sendo um fator significativo. Os resultados apresentados aqui oferecem um ponto de partida para a observação de padrões na riqueza e composição de espécies em gradientes altitudinais diante das mudanças climáticas globais. A fundamental issue for biogeography and ecology is to understand and map the species distribution, which also provides subsidies for actions of conservation. The epiphytes represent a functional group with high richness and abundance in neotropical forests, as well as presenting sensibility to environmental variations, thus representing a good model to study distribution patterns. The Atlantic Forest (AF) is one of the world biodiversity hotspots and is the Brazilian phytogeographic domain with the highest richness and endemism in epiphytes. Atlantic Domain has great elevation amplitude, mainly at the south portion, and the Serra da Mantiqueira (SM) is a mountain chain with the greatest elevations. In the SM, from 1200m, occur the cloud forest, characterized by constant fog and remarkable presence of epiphytes, and one of its subtypes, the dwarf cloud forests, are highly threatened by the global climatic changes. In order to know and understand the distribution patterns and richness of vascular epiphytes in different scales, the thesis was divided into three chapters. The Chapter 1 aimed to refine mapping of the distribution of richness and endemism of vascular epiphytes and to understand the abiotic factors responsible for the richness and species turnover in the Southern block of the Atlantic Forest (SBAF). We used datasets and generated two Generalized Dissimilarity Models (GDM). We found four regions presenting high richness and endemism and confirmed a gradient of richness and species turnover between coastal and inland areas, as well as between the lowland and highland forests. The main preditors from GDMs were geographical distance, cloud cover, and seasonality of temperature. The topographical heterogeneity and respective climatic changes are responsible for increasing the richness and species turnover of vascular epiphytes in SBAF. In Chapter 2 we aimed to list the vascular epiphyte species of cloud forests of the SM. We performed collections throughout the mountain chain and compiled a dataset. The cloud forests of SM presented 678 species, representing approximately 20% and 30% of the Brazilian and Atlantic Forest species, respectively. The 9 richest families, Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Polypodiaceae, confirmed the patterns obtained in different scales. Several threatened species in the national and state levels highlight the relevance of conservation of the remnants of the SM. In Chapter 3, we aimed to investigate the distribution of richness and composition of species throughout the elevation gradient in the cloud forests of the SM and to evaluate the influence of climatic and topographical variables. We established plots throughout different elevations of the SM to investigate the distribution at local and regional scales. The species richness was compared through rarefaction analysis and the composition was evaluated using analysis of similarity and correlation with environmental factors. We did not find intermediate peaks of richness at the local scale, but regionally the elevation interval between 1500m and 1700m presented the highest richness, especially if compared with the highest altitudes, where low temperatures represent an environmental filter, limiting the richness even with highest precipitation. Species composition is affected by climatic differences, throughout the SM, related to the seasonality, clustering plots of the same locality, despite the geographical distance did not represent a significant factor. The results presented here offer a starting point for observing the patterns of richness and composition of species in elevation gradients facing the global climatic changes.

A família Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. inclui musgos acrocárpicos, de tamanho pequeno a médio, que crescem, predominantemente como tufos e ocorrem, geralmente, sobre rochas e solo. A circunscrição da família é controversa, sendo sua monofilia sustentada por dados moleculares. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo realizar o estudo palinológico de espécies de Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. ocorrentes nas Américas e interpretar as relações entre as características palinológicas e as estratégias ecológicas das espécies estudadas, que pertencem aos gêneros Amphidium Schimp.; Arctoa Bruch & Schimp.; Cynodontium Schimp; Dichodontium Schimp.; Dicranoweisia Lindb. ex Milde; Kiaeria I. Hagen; Oncophorus (Brid.) Brid.; Oreas Brid.; Oreoweisia (Bruch & Schimp.) De Not.; Rhabdoweisia Limpr. Os esporos foram observados sob microscópio de luz antes e após acetólise e sob microscópio eletrônico de varredura e de transmissão. Para a avaliação das relações entre a morfologia dos esporos e as estratégias ecológicas foi realizada a análise de agrupamento, considerando os tipos de elementos de ornamentação, espessura do esporoderma polaridade, condição de tamanho, área apertural, forma de vida e substrato. As espécies estudadas apresentam esporos de tamanho pequeno a médio, com simetria radial e âmbito subcircular, são heteropolares ou apolares. O esporoderma é formado por intina, exina e perina. Os elementos de ornamentação permitiram a caracterização de quatro tipos morfológicos. Das 23 espécies estudadas, nove, incluídas em três gêneros apresentam esporos anisomórficos, sendo aqui relatados pela primeira vez. Os esporos das espécies de Amphidium Schimp. apresentam características palinológicas que permitem diferenciá-las das demais espécies integrantes de Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. Os padrões de ornamentação da superfície do esporoderma mais frequentes foram o baculoide e o granuloide; cerca de 80% das espécies analisadas apresentam área apertural diferenciada; dentre as carcterísticas ecológicas, rocha foi o substrato mais frequente, seguido por solos e a maioria das espécies apressentm tufo como forma de vida. As espécies de Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. analisadas neste trabalho foram agrupadas através de características palinológicas e ecológicas. The family Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. includes small to medium sized acrocarpic mosses that grow predominantly as tufts and usually occur on rocks and soil. The circumscription of the family is controversial, and its monophyly is supported by molecular data. The present work aims to carry out the palynological study of species of Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. occurring in the Americas and to interpret the relationships between the palynological and ecological strategic characteristics of the species studied, which belong to the genera Amphidium Schimp.; Arctoa Bruch & Schimp.; Cynodontium Brid.; Dichodontium Schimp.; Dicranoweisia Lindb. ex Milde; Kiaeria I. Hagen; Oncophorus (Brid.) Brid.; Oreas Brid.; Oreoweisia (Bruch & Schimp.) De Not.; Rhabdoweisia Limpr. The spores were observed under light microscopy before and after acetolysis and under scanning and transmission electron microscopy. For the evaluation of the relationships between the spore morphology and the ecological strategies, the grouping analysis was performed considering the types of ornamentation elements, sporoderma polarity thickness, size condition, aesthetic area, life form and substrate. The species studied present small to medium spores, with radial symmetry and subcircular extent, are heteropolar or nonpolar. The sporoderm is formed by intina, exina and perina. The ornamentation elements allowed the characterization of four morphological types. Of the 23 species studied, nine, included in three genera present anisomorphic spores, being reported here for the first time. The spores of Amphidium Schimp. species have palynological characteristics that allow them to differentiate them from the other Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr species. The most frequent patterns of ornamentation of the sporoderm surface were baculoid and granuloid; about 80% of the analyzed species present a distinct aperural area. Among the ecological characteristics, rock was the most frequent substrate, followed by soils and most species apressentm tuff as a way of life. The species of Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr. analyzed in this work were grouped through palynological and ecological characteristics.

Palms are abundant in tropical forests and are recognized as effective bioindicators of hot climates. Moreover, play an important ecological and economic role for local populations. Though palms remain relatively well-conserved, they are under increasing pressure from deforestation. Therefore, endemicity is important for the delimitation of conservation areas. The purposes of the study is 1) to synthesize available information in the literature on species diversity, ecological aspects, use and conservation of Amazon palms (Chapter 1); to analyse palms species richness patterns relative to the latitudinal gradient, sample efforts, and deforestation in the Amazon region (Chapter 2); to compare richness and floristic similarities patterns among the Amazonian sub-regions (Chapter 2); to detect endemic areas for palms in the Amazon region (Chapter 3); and to determine whether the species that define these endemic areas are protected within conservation units (Chapter 3). Records of occurrences were extracted from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The final dataset consisted of 17,310 records, for 177 species of Amazonian palms. The areas with the greatest richness were in the western, central and northeastern Amazon, principally at latitudes 0–5ºS. Most palms species grow in different habitats, but the highest species richness are found in terra firme forest. Palms are widely used with different category of use according to the regions and species, principally are used for human consumption, elaboration of utensils and tools, and construction of houses. Highest rates of deforestation (>2000 km2) were found in the southern and eastern brazilian Amazon, which coincide with low species richness and gaps in records. Similarity analysis resulted in two groups of sub-regions: the first included the Amazon s.s., Andes and Guiana, and the other group included the Plateau and Gurupi sub-region. The combination of PAE and NDM-VNDM analyses resulted in eight endemic palm areas in western Amazon shared with Andean sub-region. Of the species that define the endemic areas, five are threatened with extinction in one of three IUCN categories (EN, VU, NT), and they are not protected in any conservation units. In conclusion, the western Amazon, besides having high palm richness, also has palm endemic areas, especially, near the Andean sub-region and the Peruvian Amazon, and areas with low species richness, especially those areas with data deficiency, need to be further researched for a better knowledge of their diversity and richness patterns.
