Quintais agroflorestais estão presentes em diversas comunidades extrativistas brasileiras, sendo responsáveis pela subsistência em muitas delas. Dentre outras funções que podem ser atribuídas aos quintais agroecológicos está a capacidade de preservação genética das culturas domésticas, o que inclui espécies nativas de biomas sob forte pressão antrópica, como o Cerrado. Dentre estas espécies, há o cumbaru Dipteryx alata Vog., que constitui uma importante fonte de renda para as populações extrativistas. Dessa forma, o presente estudo foi desenvolvido no Assentamento Andalucia, Município de Nioaque, importante polo do extrativismo de cumbaru no Cerrado de Mato Grosso do Sul. O objetivo foi avaliar a biodiversidade dos quintais agroflorestais e o papel da expressão de D. alata nestes espaços. Para isso, foram testadas as hipóteses: (I) a biodiversidade dos quintais agroflorestais é direcionada pelo perfil dos mantenedores; (II) e pela expressividade da cultura de D. alata. Os dados referentes aos mantenedores dos quintais, sobre a expressão de D. alata e a diversidade de espécies presentes foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e turnês-guiadas. Os resultados das análises estatísticas mostraram uma relação de significância entre o perfil dos mantenedores e a biodiversidade dos quintais agroflorestais. A abundância de D. alata nos quintais, por sua vez, não apresentou efeito significativo algum. Conclui-se, portanto, que mantenedores com mais anos de atividade, e que dedicam mais horas semanais, no quintal tendem a desenvolver quintais menos biodiversos. Em relação à abundância de cumbaru nos quintais, por sua vez, os resultados parecem ser inconclusivos, mostrando possivelmente a necessidade de estudos mais aprofundados.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate castor bean cake as alternative input in the control of gastrointestinal parasites in sheep raised on irrigated pasture under continuous stocking. The treatments consisted of sheep supplemented with standard diet and pasture fertilized with urea; sheep supplemented with alternative diet and pasture fertilized with urea; sheep supplemented with standard diet and pasture fertilized with in natura castor bean cake; and sheep supplemented with alternative diet and pasture fertilized with in natura castor bean cake. A lei 11.645/2008 instituiu a obrigatoriedade da discussão da temática das História e Cultura afro-brasileira e indígena nas salas de aula da educação básica de todo território nacional. A partir desse pressuposto, esta pesquisa visa discutir não só a lei, mas também os demais documentos que alicerçam e promovem a temática indígena na rede estadual de ensino em Pernambuco. Além disso, também é feito um questionamento sobre a real aplicação da lei nas escolas, sobretudo no componente curricular Geografia. Para tanto, foram realizadas pesquisas bibliográficas e documentais, além de entrevistas com sujeitos considerados relevantes para a pesquisa, contribuindo numa articulação entre literatura acadêmica, documentos e experiências. Foi constatado que não há um forte engajamento voltado para a temática nem nas escolas nem nos principais órgãos estaduais responsáveis por sua implementação, deixando uma lacuna no que se refere a história e cultura indígena na educação básica.

The nematicidal effect of different organic materials was evaluated in order to develop a non-chemical alternative soil treatment for control of the free-living stages of small ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes. The selected organic materials were residues from the juice industry of acerola, cashew, grape, guava, papaya and pineapple, as well as castor residue from the biodiesel industry. LC90 results showed that pineapple residue was the most efficient inhibitor of larval development, followed by castor, grape, cashew, acerola, guava and papaya. Castor residue was also a good source of nitrogen and was used in a greenhouse experiment to prevent larval development in contaminated goat faeces that was deposited in pots containing the grasses Brachiaria brizantha (var. Paiaguás) or Megathyrsus maximus x M. infestum (var. Massai). Castor residue caused a significant (P < 0.05) reduction (85.04%) in Paiaguás grass contamination (L3.dry mass-1) and a reduction of 17.35% in Massai grass contamination (P > 0.05), with an increase in the biomass production of Massai (251.43%, P < 0.05) and Paiaguás (109.19%, P > 0.05) grasses. This strategy, called Econemat?, with good results in vitro shows to be promising on pasture increasing phytomass production. Resumo: O efeito nematicida de diferentes materiais orgânicos foi avaliado, com o objetivo de desenvolver um tratamento alternativo não químico do solo para o controle dos estágios de vida livre de nematoides gastrintestinais de pequenos ruminantes. Os materiais orgânicos selecionados foram resíduos da indústria de suco de acerola, caju, uva, goiaba, mamão e abacaxi, além do resíduo de mamona da indústria de biodiesel. Os resultados da LC90 mostraram que o resíduo de abacaxi foi o mais eficiente inibidor do desenvolvimento larval, seguido pela mamona, uva, caju, acerola, goiaba e mamão. O resíduo de mamona também se mostrou uma boa fonte de nitrogênio, sendo usado em experimento em casa de vegetação para prevenir o desenvolvimento larval em fezes contaminadas, depositadas em vasos, contendo as gramíneas Brachiaria brizantha (var. Paiaguás) ou Megathyrsus maximus x M. infestum (var. Massai). O resíduo de mamona reduziu (85,04%) significativamente (P < 0,05) a contaminação no capim-Paiaguás (L3.dry massa-1), 17,35% no capim Massai (P> 0,05), e aumentou a produção de biomassa das gramíneas Massai (251,43%, P 0,05). Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the factors that discourages farmers from raising small ruminants in cultivated pastures. To validate a soil treatment strategy to control the free-living stages of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), castor cake (CC) was used as a fertilizer on a pasture where sheep grazed on guinea grass under continuous stocking. Parasitism by Haemonchus contortus is one of the main limiting factors in small ruminant production in tropical areas. Benzimidazoles (BZ) and macrocyclic lactones (ML) are the most used anthelmintic classes in gastrointestinal nematodes control. There is considerable scientific evidence of a possible relation between the anthelmintic resistance to BZ and ML. This study aimed to characterize the dynamics of anthelmintic resistance in an H. contortus susceptible isolate under selection pressure for BZ and ML alone or in combination and the role of isotype 1 β-tubulin gene SNPs in these situations. A total of 12 Somali sheep were infected with 5000 third stage larvae of H. contortus Inbred-Susceptible Edinburgh (ISE) isolate. Once infection was established, animals were distributed in three groups (n=4), each treated with crescent doses of oxfendazole (OXF), ivermectin (IVM) and oxfendazole plus ivermectin (IVMOXF). An additional control group with untreated animals was maintained during the entire experiment. After each treatment, eggs were collected and real-time PCR was performed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) F167Y, F200Y and E198A, in addition to egg hatch test (EHT) for BZ and larval development test (LDT) for ivermectin resistance. Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent parasitic nematode in tropical areas, and anthelmintic resistance is a global problem. Our objective was to characterize benzimidazole (BZ) resistance in gastrointestinal nematode populations in Ceara State, Brazil, using the egg hatch test (EHT) and in H. contortus populations using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Twenty locations were surveyed, and fecal samples were collected from a minimum of 40 animals from each farm and pooled. Five thousand L3 from each farm were used to infect single animals at Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Company) to provide a source of eggs for both phenotypical and molecular tests. The mean EHT was 2.46 μg/ml (±0.58 μg/ml), and BZ resistance was detected at all surveyed locations. The mean resistant allelic frequencies at positions F200Y and F167Y were 34.16% (±12.13%) and 58.31% (±18.89%), respectively. The resistant allelic frequencies at F167Y were higher than those at F200Y in most studied locations. We also investigated the possibility that specific BZ utilization may influence resistant allelic frequencies. We selected three nematode populations based on the resistant SNP prevalence at F200Y and F167Y as follows: higher frequency at SNP F200Y, higher frequency at SNP F167Y and similar frequencies at both positions. Anthelmintic treatments included two BZs (oxfendazole and albendazole) and ivermectin. Three animals per population per treatment were infected with 5000 L3, and nematode eggs were collected for molecular test before and after anthelmintic treatments. The results showed preferential selection of SNP F167Y in response to oxfendazole, an increase in resistant SNP frequencies in general in response to albendazole and little change in relation to pre-treatment situations in response to ivermectin. Our results confirm that BZ resistance is common. The resistant allele at SNP F167Y in H. contortus prevails in Ceara State, and we provide evidence that this result may be due to the utilization of oxfendazole in recent years.

Os resultados mostraram que, ao longo do experimento, o desempenho ponderal dos quatro grupos genéticos foi negativamente afetado pela infecção por endoparasitas, mas o efeito de genótipo foi significativo para ganho de peso médio diário, e os grupos SI e F1 apresentaram melhores médias. O efeito do genótipo, tempo e interação genótipo x tempo foi significativo para o peso e o escore corporal. Os cordeiros da raça SB apresentaram maiores escores corporais ao longo do experimento, apesar do menor ganho de peso quando comparados aos dos grupos SI e F1. The aim of this study was to compare the following four genetic groups of hair sheep: Santa Inês (SI), Morada Nova (MN), Brazilian Somali (BS), and the F1 1/2Dorper x 1/2Morada Nova crossbreed on traits related to growth and parasitic infection. Thirty-three male lambs of the same age and of simple birth, under the same pre-weaning management conditions were used in the experiment. After weaning the animals were housed in a completely randomized design in paddocks made of Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania. Along the course of the research, the performance of the four groups of sheep was observed to be negatively affected by gastrointestinal parasites, but there was a genotype effect to the average daily weight gain (ADWG), where the SI and F1 genotypes presented higher values. The effects of genotype, time and genotype x time interaction were significant in weight and corporal score (CS) measurements. The BS lambs had the highest CS values throughout the experiment despite not presenting greater weight gain when compared to the SI and F1 breeds. There were also significant effects of time and genotype x time interaction for packed cell volume (PCV) and FAMACHA© score (FAM) and only the time effect was significant in the total number of eggs per gram (EPG) and total plasma protein (TPP). The MN lambs showed higher PCV values and unlike the other groups, presented a FAMACHA© score below 3 and PCV above 23% even having a higher EPG tendency, especially in the initial phase, indicating a possible higher resilience to infection caused by gastrointestinal parasites. Bioactive molecules of plant species are promising alternatives for the chemical control of gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants. Extracts of native and exotic seed species from Brazil's semi-arid region were tested in vitro in an egg hatch assay and the bioactivity of their proteins was investigated. Each seed species was subjected to three extractions with three types of solvents. All the seeds showed ovicidal activity, which varied according to the solvents. Higher ovicidal activity was found in the molecule fractions of low molecular weight (0.05, Bonferroni test). Hemagglutinating activity was detected in the fractions of C. spectabilis and M. oleifera fractions, hemolysin activity in the A. lebbeck and M. oleifera fractions, serine protease inhibitory activity in the A. lebbeck, I. asarifolia, J. curcas, M. oleifera and R. communis fractions, cysteine protease inhibitor activity in the M. oleifera fraction, and no protein activity in the L. ferrea fraction. The results of this work reveal new plant species with a potential for use in controlling nematode parasites in goats, thus opening a new field of research involving plant protein molecules with ovicidal properties. Resumo: Moléculas bioativas de espécies vegetais são alternativas promissoras ao controle químico dos nematoides gastrintestinais em ruminantes. Extratos de sementes de espécies nativas e exóticas do Semiárido Brasileiro foram testados in vitro em ensaio de eclosão de ovos e investigada a natureza proteica da bioatividade. Três extrações com três solventes foram feitas para cada semente estudada. Todas as sementes apresentaram atividade ovicida, variando com o solvente utilizado. Maior taxa de inibição da eclosão concentrou-se nas frações de moléculas de baixa massa molecular (0,05, teste de Bonferroni). Observou-se atividade hemaglutinante nas frações de C. spectabilis e M. oleifera, de hemolisina em A. lebbeck e M. oleifera, de atividade inibidora de protease da serina em A. lebbeck, I. asarifolia, J. curcas, M. oleifera e R. communis, de atividade inibidora de protease da cisteína em M. oleifera e nenhuma atividade proteica na fração de L. ferrea. Os resultados revelaram novas espécies botânicas com potencial de controle de nematoides em caprinos e um novo campo de pesquisa, o estudo de moléculas de origem proteica com atividade ovicida.

Parasitism by Haemonchus contortus is one of the main limiting factors in small ruminant production around the globe. Although several studies suggest the use of integrated management practices, these parasites have been controlled essentially with synthetic anthelmintic drugs. The resistance mechanism against the imidazothiazole derivative levamisole in Haemonchus contortus has not been fully described. Recently, resistance was associated with a 63bp deletion in the Hco-acr-8b gene that encodes a subunit for a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. This study aimed to standardize a real time PCR (qPCR) protocol for levamisole resistance diagnosis in H. contortus populations based on this polymorphism and use it to characterize 23 field H. contortus populations obtained from different localities of Ceara State, Northeast Brazil. In addition, two populations of H. contortus were used as a standard of susceptibility and resistance, Inbred Strain Edinburgh (ISE) and Kokstad, respectively. Larval development tests (LDT) were performed on five field isolates and both EC50 and EC95 were estimated. LDT EC95 values provided a wider interval between susceptible and resistant populations than EC50 values (EC95 = 1.96–57.93 μM; EC50 = 0.05–0.39 μM), and were found to be more appropriate for differentiating them. Real time PCR results showed resistance allele frequencies ranged from 20.9 to 76.7%. Our results suggest that levamisole resistance may be present in field populations but it is not as widespread as benzimidazole resistance. This methodology may be useful to monitor levamisole resistance in field populations of H. contortus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and characterize goats with different levels of resistance to gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes. During 93 days, 60 F2 crossbreed goats originated from ½ Saanen and ½ Anglo-Nubian animals were grazed in the same pasture. Feces and blood were collected on a weekly basis for eggs per gram counts of feces (EPG) and coprocultures and to determinate the number of eosinophils, packed cell volume and total plasma protein, respectively. The education deals with challenges such as the need to develop more dynamic and participative classes, facing a world with so much technological information available, the expositives classes are not attractive to the students. In this scenario it was formulated a didactic game in track format, a game very used by the teenagers, aiming to analyze the impact of this resource in the geography classes. The theme chosen to produce the games was the geological time and the Brazilian morphoclimatic domains. It was presented to the students that didn’t studied the theme before and to others that already did, considering in this way to be able to compare the results and evaluate the viability. After participation in the game, they showed receptivity and argumented that this strategy is a potential means for teachers to make their classes participative and viability ways to the concretization of the learning. Nesse cenário foi formulado o jogo didático no formato de trilha, um jogo muito utilizado pelos jovens, objetivando analisar o impacto desse recurso nas aulas de Geografia. O tema escolhido para produzir os jogos foi o tempo geológico e domínios morfoclimáticos brasileiros. Foi apresentado para estudantes que não tinham estudado o tema e outros que já o estudaram, considerando desta maneira ser possível comparar os resultados e avaliar a viabilidade. Após a participação no jogo esses mostraram receptividade e argumentaram ser essa estratégia um meio potencial para os docentes tornar suas aulas participativas e viabilizar caminhos para concretização da aprendizagem.

Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a retrovirus that infects goats. This study evaluated the prevalence of CAEV in breeder goats from the states of Maranhão, Ceará, Piauí, Alagoas, Sergipe, Rio Grande do Norte, and Paraíba. We collected a total of 531 serum samples from 251 properties. On average, two male breeder goats were examined from each farm. Results from western blotting demonstrated that the prevalence of CAEV was 6.2% (32/513). In each state, the following prevalence values were found: Piauí, 5.9% (7/119); Maranhão, 2.0% (01/48); Sergipe, 7.1% (03/42); Alagoas, 17.6% (03/17); Rio Grande do Norte, 4.7% (05/105); Paraíba, 2.1% (02/94); and Ceará, 12.5% (11/34). We also conducted a univariate analysis to determine the risk factors that are associated with CAEV. This analysis revealed that breeding season, records of herd data, criteria adopted for the first mating of females, castration of male goats, origin of breeders, and identification of the animal were associated with CAEV. Adopting control measures to identify CAEV-positive animals and avoid virus transmission to females, especially during breeding seasons, is crucial since, males carrying CAEV can be sources of infection for the entire herd.

Apesar de sua conhecida resistência, os ovinos estão sujeitos as endoparasitoses, sendo este o principal fator limitante para a sua produção em todo o mundo, especialmente em regiões tropicais. Este trabalho objetiva avaliar a carga parasitária, o perfil hematológico e bioquímico sérico, e o grau Famacha de ovinos sem padrão racial definido infectados e tratados com ivermectina e closantel. O trabalho foi realizado no mês de julho de 2010, numa propriedade rural no município de Mossoró-RN. Foram selecionados 41 animais, os quais foram divididos em três grupos: grupo I- controle (sem tratamento), grupo II- tratado com ivermectina (0,2mg/kg) e Grupo III- tratado com closantel (5mg/kg). As amostras de fezes foram coletadas nos dias 0, 7, 14 e 21, pós-tratamento para análise quantita tiva (OPG) e para análise qualitativa (coprocultura), foram utilizadas amostras dos dias 0, 14 e 21. A primeira coleta de sangue se deu no dia 0, a segunda e a terceira 24 e 72 horas após a primeira, respectivamente, a quarta e a quinta 7 e 14 dias após a primeira, dos quais foram analisados o hemograma, os níveis séricos de proteínas totais, albumina e globulinas, e a relação albumina/globulinas. Foi determinado o grau Famacha de cada animal em todos os momentos de coleta de amostras. O tratamento com closantel foi eficaz no tratamento das helmintoses, principalmente Haemonchus contortus, nos ovinos avaliados. Por outro lado, houve resistência dos parasitas à ivermectina. Os dados de Famacha apresentaram correlação negativa com hematócrito, leucócitos, hemoglobina, albumina, proteínas totais, globulinas e relação albumina/globulinas. O hematócrito apresentou uma correlação forte e positiva com Hemoglobina, Albumina e Proteínas totais. Os tratamentos com closantel e ivermectina não foram responsáveis por alterações consideráveis nos parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos avaliados. Despite its known resistance, the sheep are subject to endoparasitoses, which are the main limiting factor for its production worldwide, especially in tropical regions. This study aims to evaluate the changes in parasitic load, serum biochemical and hematological panel, and Famacha scores of mixed-bred sheep naturally infected with nematodes and treated with ivermectin and closantel. The study was conducted at July 2010, in a farm in the municipality of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. We selected 41 animals were divided into three groups: group I- control (without treatment), group II- treated with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg), and Group III- treated with closantel (5mg/kg). Stool samples were collected on days 0, 7, 14 and 21 after treatment for quantitative analysis (EPG) and qualitative analysis (stool culture), we used samples from days 0, 14 and 21. The first blood sample was given on day 0, the second and third 24 and 72 hours after the first, respectively the fourth and fifth 7 and 14 days after the first of which analyzed the blood count, serum total protein, albumin and globulins, and albumin/globulins ratio. Famacha scores were determined the degree of each animal at all times of sampling. Closantel administration was effective in the treatment of helminthiasis, especially Haemonchus contortus in evaluated sheep. On the other hand, there was parasite resistance to ivermectin. Famacha data showed negative correlation with packed cell volume, leukocytes, hemoglobin, albumin, total protein, globulin and albumin/globulin ratio. The packed cell volume showed a strong and positive correlation with hemoglobin, albumin and total protein. Treatment with ivermectin and closantel were not responsible for considerable changes in hematological and biochemical parameters evaluated.

Parasitic infection is recognized worldwide as a limiting factor in the production of goats, and various control methods are used to reduce economic losses, often without considering the epidemiology of the parasites. This has led to the development of highly tolerant parasite populations and the presence of chemical residues in the beef and milk. The objective of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of goat farmers about parasitic diseases and to correlate this with the epidemiology of endoparasites and parasite control practices in goat farms in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The analysis was based on a questionnaire applied by trained veterinarians. The sample was homogeneous throughout the state, covering 18.4% (157/853) of municipalities. Eighty-four dairy goat farms in 81 municipalities and 200 properties with beef goats in 76 municipalities were evaluated. The herd size per goat farm ranged from 4 to 57 (average 24) for beef herds and from 2 to 308 (average 63) for dairy farms. The majority of the beef herd production was extensive and semi-extensive (98.5%), while the dairy herds were maintained under intensive farming (98.8%). The mixed production of goats and sheep was reported by 36.5% of beef goat farmers and by 20.2% of dairy goat farmers. Among the beef goats farms on which the technological level was determined, 2.0% were categorized as having high technological level, 34.5% as medium, and 63.5% as low. Of the 84 dairy farms, 30% operated at a high, 47% at a medium, and 23% at a low technological level. The adoption of practices to reduce parasitism, such as the quarantine of animals, treatment of newly arrived animals, regular cleaning of the floor, and technical assistance, was significantly higher on dairy farms than on beef farms. Although 85.7% of dairy farmers and 83% of beef farmers medicate their animals, the treatments were performed without technical criteria, and deworming intervals ranged from 30 to 120 days or more. The average interval between treatments was significantly longer in dairy goat herds (4.8 months) than in the beef herds (3.6 months). The most commonly used drugs were macrocyclic lactones (37.7% in dairy and 39.5% in beef herds) and benzimidazoles (48.9% in dairy and 31.5% in beef herds). Goat production in Minas Gerais is still in its infancy, and even though using a control program associated with other health practices, producers still rely heavily on chemicals to get satisfactory results.

Precise normalization with reference genes is necessary, in order to obtain reliable relative expression data in response to gastrointestinal nematode infection. By using sheep from temperate regions as models, three reference genes, viz., ribosomal protein LO (RPLO), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit A (SDHA), were investigated in the abomasum, abomasal lymph nodes and small intestine of Brazilian Somalis sheep, either resistant or susceptible to gastrointestinal nematodes infections. Real time PCR was carried out by using SYBR Green I dye, and gene stability was tested by geNorm. RPLO was an ideal reference gene, since its expression was constant across treatments, presented lower variation, and was ranked as the most stable in abomasum and lymph node tissues. On the other hand, SDHA was the most stable in the small intestine followed by RPLO and GAPDH. These findings demonstrate the importance of correctly choosing reference genes prior to relative quantification. In addition, we determined that reference genes used in sheep from temperate regions, when properly tested, can be applied in animals from tropical regions such as the Brazilian Somalis sheep.

The objective of this work was to evaluate ovicidal and larvicidal effects of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil (EGEO) on Haemonchus contortus. The chemical composition determination of EGEO was through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Egg hatch test (EHT) was performed in concentrations 21.75; 17.4; 8.7; 5.43 e 2.71 mg x mL(-1). In larval development test (LDT) were used the concentrations 43.5; 21.75; 10.87; 5.43 e 2.71 mg x mL(-1). Each trial was conducted by negative control with Tween 80 (3%) and positive control, 0.02 mg x mL(-1) of thiabendazole in EHT and 0.008 mg x mL(-1) of ivermectin in LDT. The maximum effectiveness of EGEO on eggs was 99.3% in concentration of 21.75 mg x mL(-1) and on larvae was 98.7% in concentration 43.5 mg x mL(-1). The concentration of EGEO that inhibits 50% of the eggs and larvae was 8.3 and 6.92 mg x mL(-1), respectively. The oil chemical analysis identified as main component the monoterpen 1,8-cineol. EGEO presented ovicidal and larvicidal activities in vitro, revealing a good potential for use in the control of sheep and goat gastrointestinal nematodes.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade do fungo nematófago Monacrosporium thaumasium, no controle de larvas infectantes de nematóides gastrintestinais de caprinos em campo, no Semi-Árido cearense. Uma área de 20 ha, com pasto recém-formado, livre de vermes, foi dividida em quatro piquetes de 5 ha. Em cada piquete, foi formado um grupo constituído por nove caprinos, onde cada animal recebeu os seguintes tratamentos, durante os meses de abril a junho de 2002: grupo 1, 10 g de péletes por via oral, semanalmente; grupo 2, 10 g de péletes por via oral, quinzenalmente; grupo 3, 0,5 mL de moxidectin por 25 kg de peso vivo; grupo 4, controle, não tratado. Mensalmente, dois caprinos traçadores foram colocados junto ao rebanho por 30 dias, e após esse período, foram sacrificados e necropsiados. O grupo de animais que recebeu o tratamento com o fungo uma vez por semana apresentou redução no número de ovos por grama de fezes, menor carga parasitária e maior ganho de peso, em relação aos animais dos demais grupos. O fungo M. thaumasium é eficiente no controle de larvas infectantes nas pastagens e pode ser utilizado no controle e profilaxia de nematóides gastrintestinais de caprinos, no Semi-Árido cearense. The present study aimed to evaluate the viability of the nematophagous fungus Monacrosporium thaumasium in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes larvae of goats in the field, in semiarid climate in Ceará State, Brazil. An area of 20 ha, free of worms, was divided into four paddocks of 5 ha. In each paddock, one group consisting of nine goats was formed and received the following treatment, individually, from April to June 2002: group 1, each animal received, orally, 10 g of pellets, weekly; group 2, the animals received 10 g of pellets, each 15 days; group 3, the animals received 0.5 mL moxidectin per 25 kg of live weight; group 4, control, not treated. Monthly, two tracer goats were introduced into the flock per 30 days. After this period, they were sacrificed and submitted to necropsy. The group of animals that received fungi treatments weekly showed reduction in the number of eggs per gram of feces, smaller parasitic load and larger weight in relation to animals of the other groups. The fungi M. thaumasium was efficient to control infective larvae in the pasture, and can be used in the control and prophylaxis of gastrointestinal nematodes of goats in semiarid climate, in Ceará State.

The tadpoles of Proceratophrys cristiceps (Müller, 1884) are described based on specimens collected in a temporary pool at the Estação Experimental de São João do Cariri, in the municipality of São João do Cariri, Paraíba State, in NE Brazil. Tadpoles in stage 39 had a total length of 30.31 mm, a body length of 12.45 mm (corresponding to 41.07% of their total length), were ovoid shaped in dorsal view, slightly depressed in lateral view, and with a dental formula 2(2)/3(1). The morphological characteristics of the tadpole P. cristiceps were compared with other tadpoles of four species belonging to the Proceratophrys bigibbosa group.

Eprinomectin is the only avermectin approved for use to control gastrointestinal nematodes in lactating cows. Some studies in the USA and Europe have also demonstrated that this drug is highly effective in small ruminants. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of pour-on eprinomectin in Anglo-Nubian goats at the end of lactation. Twenty-four goats were used, naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, and divided into two groups: control and treated with eprinomectin (Eprinex, Merial, pour-on 0.5%) at a dose of 850 microg/kg. Counts were made of the eggs per gram (EPG) of feces, along with coprocultures, on days -7, 0, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25 and 29. The milk production of each group was recorded throughout the experiment. The coprocultures detected 98% Haemonchus contortus and 2% Oesophagostomum. There was no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) in daily milk output between the two groups. Eprinomectin at the tested dosage was not effective (P > 0.05) in reducing the EPG. Positive results would serve as basis for use of an avermectin without residues in dairy goats, providing a scientific basis for greater food safety.

The rapid development of anthelmintic resistance, associated with the high cost of the available anthelmintic drugs, had limited the success of gastrointestinal nematodiasis control in sheep and goats and thus awakened interest in the study of medicinal plants as alternative sources of anthelmintics. Spigelia anthelmia extracts obtained with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate or methanol, were tested on Haemonchus contortus eggs and larvae via egg hatch and larval development tests. The extracts were evaluated at five concentrations: 3.1, 6.2, 12.5, 25.0 and 50.0 mg ml(-1). At 50.0 mg ml(-1), the ethyl acetate extract inhibited 100% of the egg hatching and 81.2% of the larval development. In a similar way the methanolic extract inhibited 97.4% of the egg hatching and 84.4% of larval development. These results suggest that utilization of S. anthelmia extracts may be useful in the control of sheep and goats gastrointestinal nematodes.

Resumo: A salinomicina foi avaliada no controle da eimeriose caprina em 27 cabritos mestiços distribuídos aleatoriamente em três tratamentos num delineamento inteiramente casualizado: T0, nao medicados (grupo controle); Tl e 72, medicados com doses de l e 2mg de salinomicina/kg de peso vivo/dia, respectivamente. Na fase de cria, não houve diferença estatística (P>0,005) no ganho médio de peso (GP) entre os três tratamentos. Na fase de recria, o grupo T0 apresentou GP significativalnente inferior (P0.05). 0 número médio de oocistos por grama de fezes (OOPG) do grupo T0 nas duas fases estudadas, foi significativamente maior (P0,005) entre si. 0 grupo T0 apresentou rendimento médio de carcaca (RC) significativamente inferior (P0,005). O peso médio da massa corporal (MC) do grupo T0 foi inferior (P0,005) do grupo T1 ; entre os grupos T1 e T2, não houve diferença significativa (P>0,005) no peso médio da massa corporal (MC). O uso da salinomicina nas doses de 1 e 2mg/kg, resultou em maior ganho de peso dos animais dos grupos T1 e T2 e, consequentemente, maior valor da margem bruta destes tratamentos. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os T1 e T2 foram equivalentes para o controle da eimeriose caprina, uma vez que ambos os tratamentos apresentaram maior ganho de peso e oocistigrama inferior ao grupo T0. Conclui-se que o tratamento com a salinomicina na dose de 1,0mg/kg é eficaz, desde que seja administrada a partir da segunda semana de vida. The salinomicin in the control of eimeriosis in dairy goats at pre and post-weaning phases. Abstract: Salinomicin was evaluated for the control of caprine eimeriosis in the pre-weaning (PRW) and post-weaning (POW) phases. Twenty seven crossbred goat kids were randomly distributed among three treatments: T0, not medicated (check group); T1 and T2 daily medicated with 1.0 and 2.0mg/kg living weight of salinomicin, respectively. In the PRW, there were not significant differences (P>0.05) in the daily weight gain among the treatments. However, in the POW, the T0 group presented daily weight gain inferior (P>0.05) to the T1 and T2 groups, which did not statiscally differ (P>0.05) between themselves. The average number of oocistes per gram of faeces in the T0 at the two studied phases was significatively higher (P0.05) between themselves. The average carcass yield was significantly lower (P0.05) to the T1 group. The use of salinomicin resulted in higher weight gains by the lambs, and improved the economic yield. The treatments T1 and T2 were equivalent in the caprine eimeriosis control since both treatments presented higher weight gains and lower oocistogram than the treatment T0. However, treatment T1 should be recommended due to its better economic efficiency.

This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of Brazilian Somalis sheep to natural infections by gastrointestinal nematodes. During 98 days, 75 weaned sheep, initially 3–4 months old, were kept on the same pasture and evaluated. Fecal and blood samples were collected for parasitological and hematological exams. After this period, the eight most resistant and the eight most susceptible animals were selected based on their individual averages of nematode fecal egg counts and were slaughtered for worm burden determination and nematodes identification. Abomasum and abomasum lymph nodes were also recovered for gene expression analysis. Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent nematode in Brazil. The objective of this study was to select 6 populations of H. contortus of known or suspected benzimidazole resistance status and characterize these using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) F200Y, F167Y and E198A in the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene. qPCR was performed using DNA from a pool of 10 adult male H. contortus from a single animal per farm. Faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) and egg hatch test (EHT) were used to determine the resistance status. Samples were obtained from 6 farms located in 5 counties in the Ceara State: Taua, Boa Viagem, Quixada, Santa Quiteria and Solonopole. The inbred-susceptible-Edinburgh (ISE) isolate was used as reference for comparative purposes in the qPCR. Benzimidazole resistance was detected by FECRT on all farms with efficacy values ranging from 0 to 51%. EC50 values as determined by EHT were all above 1.49μg/ml. High frequencies of the resistant SNPs F200Y and F167Y alleles were detected but no resistance was detected at SNP E198A. Our results suggest that the SNPs F167Y and F200Y are both important for benzimidazole resistance in the studied populations.

Phytotherapy may be an alternative strategy for controlling gastrointestinal parasites. This study evaluated the anthelmintic efficacy of Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil (EcEO). The in vitro effects of EcEO were determined through testing the inhibition of egg hatching and larval development of Haemonchus contortus. EcEO was subjected to acute toxicity testing on mice, orally and intraperitoneally. The in vivo effects of EcEO were determined by the fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) in goats infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. The results showed that 5.3 mg.mL-1 EcEO inhibited egg hatching by 98.8% and 10.6 mg.mL-1 EcEO inhibited H. contortus larval development by 99.71%. The lethal doses for 50% of the mice were 4153 and 622.8 mg.kg-1, for acute toxicity orally and intraperitoneally. In the FECRT, the efficacy of EcEO and ivermectin was 66.25 and 79.16% respectively, on goat gastrointestinal nematodes eight days after treatment. EcEO showed in vitro and in vivo anthelmintic activity. Fitoterapia pode ser uma estratégia alternativa para o controle de parasitas gastrintestinais. Este estudo avaliou a eficácia anti-helmintica do óleo essencial de Eucalyptus citriodora (OeEc). Os efeitos in vitro do OeEc foram determinados através do teste de eclosão de ovos e inibição do desenvolvimento larvar de Haemonchus contortus. O OeEc foi submetido ao teste de toxicidade aguda oral e intraperitoneal, em camundongos. Os efeitos in vivo do OeEc foram avaliados através do teste de redução da contagem de ovos nas fezes (FECRT) com caprinos infectados com nematóides gastrintestinais. Os resultados mostraram que 5,3 mg.mL-1 OeEc inibiram 98,8% a eclosão de ovos e 10,6 mg.mL-1 OeEc inibiram 99,71% o desenvolvimento larvar de H. contortus. As doses letais para 50% dos camundongos foram de 4153 e 622,8 mg.kg-1 pela via oral e intraperitoneal. No FECRT, a eficácia de OeEc e ivermectina foi de 66,25 e 79,16%, respectivamente, em caprinos 8 dias após o tratamento. OeEc mostrou atividade anti-helmintica in vitro e in vivo.

Esta pesquisa apresenta algumas reflexões em torno das ações realizadas pelo projeto “Revelações da História”, iniciativa constituída por pesquisadores da fotografia na cidade de Londrina, realizado entre 2005 e 2008, que resultou na identificação, formação, reintegração e difusão de acervos visuais anônimos, bem como na publicação de dois livros que inseriram na comunidade de Londrina conjuntos visuais inéditos: o acervo do Foto Es trela e acervo de Armínio Kaiser. Para isso, foram realizad os alguns ensaios teóricos sobre fragmentos destes conjuntos fotográficos a fim de ampliar e consolidar a relevância da iniciativa de preservação a partir do tratamento dos conteúdos não explorados pelo projeto “Revelações da História”. As discussões foram realizadas sob a luz de conceitos da filosofia de Vilém Flüsser, teoria lingüística de Mikhail Bakhtin e teoria semiótica de linha francesa. A pesquisa também reforça a importância dos acervos par a formação da memória visual dos “cenários e personagens no Brasil” e a edificação da história -social conforme proposto pelo pesquisador Boris Kossoy. Além disso, também foram apresentadas as principais diretrizes de ação do projeto “Revelações da História ”, os principais pressupostos teóricos que lha dão alicerce e os instrumentos e métodos que lhe serviram de base para que possam ser referência para futuros projetos com a mesma natureza. Os resultados apresentados na pesquisa ratificam a importância e o valor da elucidação e democratização de acervos fotográficos anônimos para o universo do conhecimento. This research presents some reflections about the actions developed by the project “Revelações da História” (History Revelation), an initiative constituted by photograph researchers in the city of Londrina (Paraná State, Brazil), between the years of 2005 and 2008, that resulted in the identification, formation, re-integration and diffusion of anonymous visual heaps, as well as the publishing of two books that inserted in Londrina´s community inedited visual collections: the Foto Estrela´s and the Armínio Kaiser´s heaps. Some reflections about fragments of these photographic collections were made in order to enlarge and to consolidate the importance of this preservation initiative starting from some contents not explored by the project “Revelações da História”. The theoretical discussions were made under the light of concepts from Vilém Flüsser philosophy, the linguistic theory of Mikhail Bakhtin and the French line of semiotics theory. The research also ratifies the importance of these heaps to the constitution of a visual memory about “sceneries and characters in Brazil” and about the building of social history as the researcher Boris Kossoy proposes. Moreover, the main lines of action from the project “Revelações da História” also were presented in relation to the theoretical bases, methods and instruments that have guided it, intending to be a reference to future projects of the same type. The results presented at this research ratify the importance and the value of the lightening up and democratization of anonymous pho tographic heaps to the universe of the knowledge .

Goats and sheeps present an ectoparasite diversity that may result in considerable losses in these animals productivity. Fifteen agrarian reform settlements were visited, with the purpose of identifying ectoparasites in goats and sheeps, in which scraping, direct exams, and auricle exsudate collections were carried out. From the 494 examined goats, 89.87% had ectoparasites, as well as 232 sheeps, 76.72%. The arthropods identified in the goats were: Bovicola caprae (80.76%), Rhipicephalus microplus (1.01%), Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae (0.6%), Psoroptes cuniculi (0.4%), and Ctenocephalides felis (3.23%), Amblyomma parvum (1.01%) and Linognathus stenopsis (0.2%) which were described for the first time in Brazilian northeast. Mixed parasitism of B. caprae with R. microplus (0.46%) and P. cuniculi with B. caprae (0.23%) was also identified. In sheeps, B. ovis (74.5%), R. microplus (0.86%), C. hominivorax larvae (0.43%) and A. parvum (0.43%) were the ones registered for the first time, in this species, in Brazilian northeast, besides the association of B. ovis with R. microplus (0.56%). There was no association between gender and age (P>0.05). The development of studies to evaluate the ectoparasite importance as a limiting factor to animal production becomes important. Weaned wether goats (n = 144) approximately 6 months of age were placed in a 2 x 3 factorial experiment to test the effects and interaction of two levels of nutrition (growth+maintenance, NUT1; and twice growth+maintenance, NUT2) and three levels of Haemonchus contortus burden (0, 500, and 2000 larvae administered every 2 weeks; W0, W500, and W2000, respectively) on packed cell volume, red blood cell count, total serum protein and leukocytes. The statistical analysis revealed clear and proportionate differences among levels of infection for all variables. A significant (P0.05) nutritional effect was also found associated with all the variables except leukocytes. Nutrition by worm load interactions were found for packed cell volume and leukocytes. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was higher in the NUT1-infected animals, leading to the nutrition by worm load interaction for leukocytes. An analysis for the different leukocyte types revealed significant (P0.05) differences among infection levels for lymphocytes, while nutrition level was found to be a significant effect for basophil count and immature white cells. Several significant correlations were observed between pairs of variables. Faecal egg output could be predicted from actual worm count in three of the four necropsy periods. The clear differences observed for blood parameters were not present in production traits, suggesting that physiological thresholds may play an important role in framing the metabolic activity of biological organisms. Total serum protein was the best indicator of these effects on production parameters.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of Eucalyptus staigeriana essential oil (EsEO). The in vitro effects of EsEO were determined through the egg hatching test and the inhibition of larval development of Haemonchus contortus. The oil was subjected to acute and subacute toxicity rodents. The in vivo effects were determined through fecal egg count reduction test in goats. 1.35 and 5.4 mgml(-1) EsEO inhibited 99.27 and 99.20% H. contortus egg hatching and larval development. In subacute toxicity of EsEO, all parameters were found to be in the normal range, and histopathological analysis of organs did not present alterations. EsEO efficacy against goat gastrointestinal nematodes was 76.57% at 15th day after treatment. E. staigeriana essential oil showed in vitro and in vivo anthelmintic activity.

The development of anthelmintic resistance has made the search for alternatives to control gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants imperative. Among these alternatives are several medicinal plants traditionally used as anthelmintics. This work evaluated the efficacy of Cocos nucifera fruit on sheep gastrointestinal parasites. The ethyl acetate extract obtained from the liquid of green coconut husk fiber (LGCHF) was submitted to in vitro and in vivo tests. The in vitro assay was based on egg hatching (EHT) and larval development tests (LDT) with Haemonchus contortus. The concentrations tested in the EHT were 0.31, 0.62, 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg ml(-1), while in the LDT they were 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg ml(-1). The in vivo assay was a controlled test. In this experiment, 18 sheep infected with gastrointestinal nematodes were divided into three groups (n=6), with the following doses administered: G1-400 mg kg(-1) LGCHF ethyl acetate extract, G2-0.2 mg kg(-1) moxidectin (Cydectin) and G3-3% DMSO. The worm burden was analyzed. The results of the in vitro and in vivo tests were submitted to ANOVA and analyzed by the Tukey and Kruskal-Wallis tests, respectively. The extract efficacy in the EHT and LDT, at the highest concentrations tested, was 100% on egg hatching and 99.77% on larval development. The parameters evaluated in the controlled test were not statistically different, showing that despite the significant results of the in vitro tests, the LGCHF ethyl acetate extract showed no activity against sheep gastrointestinal nematodes.

Medicinal plants have been investigated for their anthelmintic properties and shown to be effective against eggs and larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Lippia sidoides essential oil (LsEO) on sheep gastrointestinal nematodes. Initially, 44 naturally infected sheep were divided and treated with 200 microg kg(-1) ivermectin and 230 and 283 mg kg(-1) LsEO, respectively, plus the control. Fecal samples were collected from each animal to determine epg at 7, 14 and 21 days after treatment. In another test, 21 sheep were distributed and treated with 200 microg kg(-1) ivermectin, 283 mg kg(-1) LsEO and the control, respectively. Seven days after treatment, they were euthanized and necropsied to count and identify the nematodes from the abomasum, small and large intestines. In the first test, the efficacy of 230 and 283 mg kg(-1) LsEO and ivermectin was 38%, 45.9% and 40.2%, respectively, 7 days after treatment, and 30%, 54% and 39.6%, respectively, 14 days after treatment. In the second experiment, the respective efficacy of 283 mg kg(-1) LsEO and ivermectin was 56.9% and 34.4% against Haemonchus spp., and 39.3% and 63.6% against Trichostrongylus spp.
