In this paper, we report the case of a man in his 30s with a first-episode psychosis, characterised by a subtype of delusional misidentification syndrome in which the delusion of doubles is exclusively of the patient’s own self. This subdivision can be termed ‘syndrome of doubles of the self’ or ‘syndrome of subjective doubles’. Additionally, an examination of the patient’s mental state showed paranoid delusions. After being evaluated in the emergency department, the patient was hospitalised, and medicated with antipsychotic drugs. One week later, he was discharged with total remission of psychotic symptoms. This is a rare and curious presentation of a psychotic episode, with very few similar cases described to date.

Alcohol consumption continues to cause a significant health burden globally. The advent of genome-wide association studies has unraveled many genetic loci associated with alcohol consumption. However, biological effects of these loci and pathways involved in alcohol consumption and its health consequences such as alcohol liver disease (ALD) remain to be elucidated. We combined human studies with model organisms Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans to shed light on molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol consumption and the health outcomes caused by alcohol intake. Using genetics and metabolite data within the Airwave study, a longitudinal study to investigate the health of employees of police forces in the UK, we performed several analyses to identify changes in circulating metabolites that are triggered by alcohol consumption and found an enrichment of the alcohol-associated metabolites within the linoleic acid (LNA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) metabolism pathways. We identified evidence of a potential causal relationship between alcohol consumption with several triradylglycerols (TAGs) and diradylglycerols (DAGs), a fatty ester (CAR DC18:1), an sphingomyelin (SM 40:2;O2), and an alkaloid (Piperine). We selected a set of genes annotated to genetic variants that (1) are known to be implicated in alcohol consumption, (2) are linked to liver function, and (3) are associated with the expression (cis-eQTL) of their annotated genes. We used mutations and/or RNA interference (RNAi) to suppress the expression of these genes in C. elegans and Drosophila. Testing the differences in locomotion of C. elegans showed that RNAi knockdown of ACTR1B and MAPT reduced locomotion rate in C. elegans after exposure to ethanol. We showed that RNAi knockdown of several genes (WDPCP, TENM2, GPN1, ARPC1B, SCN8A) in Drosophila changed the sedative effect of ethanol whilst RNAi knockdown of TENM2 reduced ethanol consumption. We also investigated alcohol-induced changes in TAG levels in Drosophila and demonstrated that RNAi knockdown of WDPCP, TENM2 and GPN1 reduce TAG levels. Finally, using publicly available human data, we showed that gene expression of WDPCP is linked to liver fibrosis and liver cirrhosis. Our results underline the impact of alcohol consumption on the metabolism of lipids and pinpoint WDPCP as a gene with a potential impact on lipid accumulation upon exposure to ethanol suggesting a possible pathway to ALD.

The study of anatomy is largely dependent on cadaveric specimens to fulfill the tridimensional comprehension of each structure as well as the relationship between organs. Given the difficult access to fresh anatomical specimens, the constant renovation of samples for research and educational purposes is unsustainable, beyond the ethical issues involved. The standard technique for preserving specimens involves fixation and later immersion in formaldehyde, which enables a good result, but also presents elevated carcinogenic potential. Therefore, safe and efficient preservation methods are mandatory for anatomical practices and investigations. An accessible and inexpensive alternative for specimen preservation is cryodehydration. Cryodehydrated specimens can be kept dry, with no final odor, reducing the use and exposure to formaldehyde. The objective of this study was to propose a simplified step-by-step cryodehydration protocol to obtain high-quality anatomical specimens. Through consecutive freezing and thawing cycles, cryodehydration caused a weight reduction of 60%-70% and allowed anatomical preservation, while maintaining the main morphological aspects of cavitary and parenchymatous organs, muscles, or even full-body sections. The final specimens presented high durability and can be maintained for decades, preserving all relevant anatomical features.

Yet little information on its morphology is found in the specialized literature. Thus, the objective of the work was to study the morphology of the adrenal gland of paca by means of microscopic ultrastructure analysis. The adrenal gland secretes specialized substances in the body which promote biological functions of great importance and will provide valuable information to studies in comparative anatomy. Two (2) adult lowland pacas were used, male and female. Soon after death, the animals were positioned in the supine position; their abdominal cavities were opened by pre-retro umbilical and lateral incision followed by folding of the abdominal walls to expose the glands. The adrenal glands were removed; fragments were collected, fixed and prepared for ultrastructure observations using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques. It was observed that the adrenal glands of the paca have divisions as well as the limits of the cortical and medullary region, as well as the subdivisions of the glomerulosa, fasciculated and reticulated areas of the cortical region as in other rodents. An ultrastructure of cells and their components also showed a lot of similarity to that already demonstrated in different rodents. Dryinus Latreille, the most diverse genus of Dryininae (Hymenoptera: Dryinidae), has a worldwide distribution with 268 extant species, of which 103 are reported from the Neotropics. Only eight species of Dryinidae have been recorded in Uruguay, none of them belong to genus Dryinus. In this study, we describe the first species of Dryinus in Uruguay, Dryinus rogeriae nov. sp. and expanded the geographical distribution of D. bocainanus (Olmi) based on specimens collected in eastern Uruguay. We illustrate the studied species and provide a distributional map.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the anoctamin 3 (ANO3) gene cause autosomal dominant craniocervical dystonia (DYT24), presenting from childhood to mid‐life. However, in the past years, the clinical spectrum of this disorder has widened. We present a family with heterogeneous presentation, exemplifying phenotypic diversity in DYT24. CASES: The index case presented with myoclonic dystonia at age 10. His family history was remarkable for cervical dystonia with myoclonus in his grandfather, cervical and upper limb dystonia along with dopa‐responsive parkinsonism in his father and lower‐limb dystonia in his teenage sister. Magnetic resonance imaging and blood work‐ups of all the affected family members were normal. The genetic panel for inherited forms of dystonia disclosed a point mutation c.1787C > A (p.Ser596Tyr) segregated in all affected family members. CONCLUSIONS: ANO3 mutations usually present with craniocervical dystonia and rarely generalized or leg dystonia. This family exemplifies the heterogeneous presentation of this disorder as well as a wide phenotypic variability within the same family.

Canada is exposed to rare but potentially destructive earthquakes that threaten densely settled metropolitan centers in many parts of the country. To assess the impacts and consequences of future natural-hazard events and help advance policy goals and objectives of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Natural Resources Canada, through a collaborative partnership with the Global Earthquake Model Foundation, produced a national seismic risk model. Developing this model has required the creation of a national exposure inventory, Canadian-specific fragility and vulnerability curves, and significant simplification of the Canadian Seismic Hazard Model which forms the basis for the design seismic hazard values of the National Building Code of Canada. Using the Global Earthquake Model Foundation’s OpenQuake Engine, probabilistic stochastic risk modeling is completed under baseline and simulated retrofit conditions to assess seismic risk at the neighborhood level for all settled areas in Canada. Output risk metrics include the expected immediate physical impacts of earthquake events such as building damage, casualties, and direct economic losses. This article documents the technical details of the modeling approach including a description of novel data sets in use, a summary of the extensive sensitivity testing undertaken, and characterization of quality control implemented in the absence of usable validating earthquake loss data. The results from this model, such as loss exceedance curves and annual average losses, provide an open, accessible and quantitative base of evidence for decision-making at local, regional, and national levels. As a large country with a complex seismic hazard model and dispersed populations, this Canadian study is unique. However, the challenges faced and solutions offered are likely to be of interest to other nations pursuing similar programs.

Host plant resistance is considered a valuable tool in integrated pest management and can assist in reducing the damage caused by aphids. This study evaluated the behavioral and biological parameters of B. brassicae in 37 Brassica oleracea (L.) var. acephala genotypes, and aimed to characterize the mechanisms of antixenosis and/or antibiosis. In antixenosis, plants were arranged in a circle inside an arena, releasing to the center one hundred adult aphids. The number of insects was evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 6, and 24 h after infestation. For antibiosis, 30 adults were confined inside each clip-cage on each genotype. The total number of nymphs; number of nymphs per adult per day; total nymphs until 10 d after the first nymph had been produced; duration of the pre-reproductive phase; duration of the reproductive phase; nymphal survival; adult longevity; nymph-adult period and nymphal mortality at 5, 7 and 10 d were evaluated. Several genotypes showed be less infested and more harmful to B. brassicae on collard greens. The genotypes 20T, 24X, 18R, 22V, 15O, 19S, 27VA, and 17Q were the least infested in the antixenosis 24 h free-choice test. 2B, 5E, 8H, 19S, 21U, 27VA, 30OP, PE, MGH, and TP genotypes prevented B. brassicae from completing nymphal period, indicating antibiosis and/or antixenosis expression. 4D, GAU, 20 T, 14 N, and MGI genotypes prevented the aphid from reaching the reproductive phase. These genotypes may be useful for breeding programs that focus on the resistance of collard greens to aphids. Nas últimas décadas, as questões ambientais vêm ganhado grande destaque no Brasil. Isso ocorre por conta da intensificação da ação antrópica em ambientes naturais, que é motivado pelo aumento no consumo, o que, por sua vez, promove danos irreversíveis ao meio ambiente. Diante da necessidade emergente de mitigar esses danos, surgiram cursos de graduação e programas de pós-graduação na área de Ciências Ambientais com objetivo de propor soluções e/ou alternativas viáveis para redução desses impactos. Este artigo, tem como proposta apresentar um relato de experiência que identifica dificuldades de se implantar o caráter interdisciplinar num Mestrado em Ciências Ambientais. Assim, esta reflexão é fruto da experiência como professor, na convivência com discentes e orientandos, e construída teoricamente, tem por objetivo contribuir com o debate e melhoria na qualidade dos cursos tendo a interdisciplinaridade como busca para a excelência científica.

This study aimed to evaluate 78 bean genotypes to verify the occurrence of resistance of antixenosis type against B. tabaci. Initially, multiple-choice trials were performed to evaluate the oviposition preference and nymphs’ establishment at 3 and 15 days after infestation. Subsequently, 21 bean genotypes were selected, and a no-choice test was conducted. Colorimetric analyses were performed to establish correlations between leaf color and insect establishment. In multiple-choice trial, the genotypes BRS Ametista, BRS Estilo, BRS Esplendor, SCS 204 Predileto, BRS Notável, IPR Eldorado, CHIB 06, IPR Quero-Quero, Iapar 81, CHIP 338, IPR Garça, Arcelina 4, SCS 202 Guará, IAC Esperança, H96102-1-1-1-52, CHIP 348, Carioca Comum, CHIP 300, IAC Carioca Eté, IAC Ybaté, and Tybatã were the least used for oviposition and nymph establishment, demonstrating antixenosis or antibiosis. In the no-choice trial, most genotypes were less attractive to whitefly, and the genotypes CHIB 06, IPR Garça, CHIP 300, and IAC Esperança had less oviposition. The most attractive genotypes presented high luminosity and more intense green and yellow colors, indicating positive correlation. Therefore, the genotypes BRS Ametista, SCS 204 Predileto, BRS Estilo, IPR Eldorado, SCS-202 Guará, Carioca Comum, Arcelina 4, CHIP 348, and IAC Esperança showed the highest resistance stability in the no-choice trial, and they are promising sources of antixenotic factors for use in breeding programs to obtain whitefly-resistant common bean lines. The fossil species of Thaumatodryinus from Dominican amber are studied, and the first revision is presented with a key to the known taxa. We recognize three species, T. miocenicus Olmi, 1995, T. priscus (Olmi, 1998), comb. nov. and T. fuscescenssp. nov. The current classification of the genus and relationships between fossil and living species are discussed. Comments on the host records for Thaumatodryinus are presented.

Interactions between dryinids and their hosts are poorly known in the Neotropical region, especially for the Brazilian fauna. This study aims to expand this incipient knowledge by describing a new species of Anteon Jurine and four new species of Gonatopus Ljungh reared from parasitized leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) collected in the state of Paraná, Southern Brazil. The new species, A. elianeae sp. nov., G. josei sp. nov., G. meloi sp. nov., G. pinhalensis sp. nov. and G. taquarensis sp. nov., are associated with leafhopper species of the subfamilies Iassinae (tribe Gyponini) and Deltocephalinae (tribes Deltocephalini and Pendarini). Both sexes of G. josei sp. nov. and G. taquarensis sp. nov. were associated and males are described, representing the first sexual association based on reared specimens from Brazil. We record for the first time species of Dryinidae parasitizing the leafhoppers species: Curtara concava, Gypona lita and Reticana lineatta (Gyponini), Graminella striatella (Deltocephalini) and Copidinomus vittulatus (Pendarini). All known records in the Neotropic of both Anteon and Gonatupus species associated with host are compiled, all known records of parasitoids of gyponines are reviewed, and the interactions with dryinids are discussed. Each new species is diagnosed and described, and illustrations of both dryinids and parasitized hosts are provided.
