This paper analyzes the spatio-temporal variations, and exceedances of the PM

Physical models are essential to describe the behavior of pollutants especially in high latitudes, and they have been regarded as immensely precise. In the tropics, however, these models have lower accuracy due to the absence of a simple theoretical framework to describe tropical dynamics. Hence, the development of predictive nonlinear models with machine learning has increased, as they are able to quantify the different dynamic processes regarding air quality and to obtain accurate predictions in less computational time than their physical counterpart. This study constructs and evaluates a support vector machine (SVM) to forecast ground-level PM2.5 in a populated city with complex topography. The simulations were built for days with red Air Quality Index (AQI), to assess whether the model could represent the behavior of days with high values and data with fast and substantial changes in the PM2.5 tendency. The SVM is trained with an air quality monitoring network using the radial basis function kernel. A spatial interpolation is also conducted to determine and describe the behavior of the AQI in the city of Bogota. This work uses statistical scores (root mean square error (9.302 μg/m3), mean BIAS (1.405 μg/m3), index of agreement (0.732), and correlation coefficient (0.654)) to validate the capability of an SVM model of simulating, with high precision, the concentrations of PM2.5 in a city with complex terrain in the short term and also to demonstrate the potential of the SVM to be used as a forecast model in other tropical cities.

Light-absorbing aerosols emitted during open biomass burning (BB) events such as wildfires and agricultural burns have a strong impact on the Earth's radiation budget through both direct and indirect effects. Additionally, BB aerosols and gas-phase emissions can substantially reduce air quality at local, regional, and global scales, negatively affecting human health. South America is one of largest contributors to BB emissions globally. After Amazonia, the BB emissions from wildfires and agricultural burns in the grassland plains of northern South America (NSA) are the most significant in the region. However, few studies have analyzed the potential impact of NSA BB emissions on regional air quality. Recent evidence suggests that seasonal variations in air quality in several major cities in NSA could be associated with open biomass burning emissions, but it is still uncertain to what extent those sources impact air quality in the region. In this work, we report on 3 years of continuous equivalent black carbon (eBC) and brown carbon (BrC) observations at a hilltop site located upwind of the city of Bogotá, and we demonstrate its association with fires detected by the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in a 3000 km × 2000 km domain. Offline PM2.5 filter samples collected during three field campaigns were analyzed to quantify water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), organic and elemental carbon (OC∕EC), and biomass burning tracers such as levoglucosan, galactosan, and potassium. MODIS active fire data and HYSPLIT back trajectories were used to identify potential biomass burning plumes transported to the city. We analyzed the relationship between BrC, WSOC, water-soluble potassium, and levoglucosan to identify signals of the regional transport of BB aerosols. Our results confirm that regional biomass burning transport from wildfires occurs annually during the months of January and April. The seasonality of eBC closely followed that of PM2.5 at the city air quality stations; however, the observed seasonality of BrC is distinctly different to that of eBC and strongly associated with regional fire counts. The strong correlation between BrC and regional fire counts was observed at daily, weekly, and monthly timescales. WSOC at the measurement site was observed to increase linearly with levoglucosan during high BB periods and to remain constant at ∼2.5 µgC m−3 during the low BB seasons. Our findings show, for the first time in this region, that aged BB plumes can regularly reach densely populated areas in the Central Andes of northern South America. A source footprint analysis involving BrC observations, back trajectories, and remotely sensed fire activity shows that the eastern savannas in NSA are the main BB source region for the domain analyzed.

BRT (Bus Rapid Transport) vehicles are a frequented microenvironment, it consists of exclusive lines for the transport of passengers in articulated buses. In many large cities of developing countries BRT vehicles are diesel operated buses emitting important amounts of PM2.5, a pollutant related with many health affectations. Evidence of high exposure levels have been reported onboard BRT vehicles, but detailed analysis of self-pollutions has not been developed. In this research, measurements of PM2.5 inside the BRT system of Bogota called TransMilenio were performed. Speed and location data were recorded in real-time. In-situ measurements were performed in 3 lines of the system: Av. El Dorado, Av. Caracas and Calle 80, in different seat locations inside the buses. PM2.5 concentrations above 120 μg/m3 were measured for all the cases studied. Values above the 24 h WHO (World Health Organization) recommendation were registered. Trips were determined to be between 20 to 40 minutes per passenger. A CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model was implemented to simulate the exhaust emissions from the buses, 3 traffic velocities of BRT were evaluated: 20, 32 and 60 km/h. Measurements and simulation results were used to calculate the self-pollution ratios inside the vehicles. The rear of the buses was identified as the most polluted section onboard with a ratio of selfpollution about 35% average.

Biomass burning emissions have a substantial impact on regional air quality and climate. The region of Amazonia in South America has long been identified as one of the largest contributors to short lived pollutants globally. However, massive natural wildfires and agricultural burns also occur every year in the grassland plains of Northern South America during the dry season (November to April). The regional-scale air quality impact of these biomass burning emissions has not been studied in depth and is analyzed in this study. We used PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations from three large urban areas: Bogota, Medellin, and Bucaramanga, for the period 2006–2016. Carbon monoxide data was only available for the city of Bogota for the analysis period. These cities are located hundreds of kilometers westward of the emission areas. The spatio-temporal distribution of fires was obtained from MODIS Active Fire Data. The back-trajectories of air masses reaching the receptor sites were computed with two different meteorological datasets. Radiosonde data, available only for Bogota, was used to account for local meteorological factors impacting pollution dispersion. A novel analysis algorithm was developed to combine active fire data with back-trajectory locations to select those active fires in the vicinity of the air masses arriving at each city. This analysis allows the selection of only those upwind fires that can be related to the air quality in the selected locations. We show that anomalously high PM and CO levels occurred when air masses originated from the Orinoco grasslands during the times when the largest number of fires in the region were active. The correlation between number of fires and PM10 concentration was found to decrease with increasing distance from the sources, ranging from 0.6 to 0.25. Our results are insensitive to the meteorological dataset used to generate back-trajectories. For Bogota it was found that mixing height variations can explain an important fraction of the observed seasonal variations in PM10, PM2.5, and CO concentration. The number of upwind fires can explain 11% ± 5% of the seasonal variability in CO concentrations. Estimates of the seasonal variability of PM10 and PM2.5 explained by fires are 45% ± 7% and 39% ± 8% respectively. However, covariance between occurrence of fires and non-combustion local sources of PM imply that the latter estimates are likely an overestimation of the actual contribution. Our findings support the possibility that fires in the Orinoco river basin deteriorate air quality in highly populated urban centers hundreds of kilometers away from the sources.

Objective The present study aimed to determine the association between chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), sociodemographic aspects, and health conditions with COVID-19 mortality in Colombia. Methods We performed an ecological study using data at the municipality level. We used COVID-19 data obtained from government public reports up to and including July 17th, 2020. We defined PM2.5 long-term exposure as the 2014–2018 average of the estimated concentrations at municipalities obtained from the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service Reanalysis (CAMSRA) model. We fitted a logit-negative binomial hurdle model for the mortality rate adjusting for sociodemographic and health conditions. Results Estimated mortality rate ratios (MRR) for long-term average PM2.5 were not statistically significant in either of the two components of the hurdle model (i.e., the likelihood of reporting at least one death or the count of fatal cases). We found that having 10% or more of the population over 65 years of age (MRR = 3.91 95%CI 2.24–6.81), the poverty index (MRR = 1.03 95%CI 1.01–1.05), and the prevalence of hypertension over 6% (MRR = 1.32 95%CI1.03–1.68) are the main factors associated with death rate at the municipality level. Having higher hospital beds capacity is inversely correlated to mortality. Conclusions There was no evidence of an association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and COVID-19 mortality rate at the municipality level in Colombia. Demographics, health system capacity, and social conditions did have evidence of an ecological effect on COVID-19 mortality. The use of model-based estimations of long-term PM2.5 exposure includes an undetermined level of uncertainty in the results, and therefore they should be interpreted as preliminary evidence., Graphical abstract Unlabelled Image, Highlights • There was not a significant association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and COVID-19 mortality in Colombia. • Demographic, health system, and social conditions are related to COVID-19 mortality. • Population over 65 years, poverty index, and prevalence of hypertension are associated to the death rate.

Lockdown measures led to air pollution decrease in several countries around the world such as China and India, whereas other regions experimented an increase in pollutant concentrations. Northern South America (NSA) was one of those areas where pollution changed during lockdown due to high fire activity. This study aims to analyze, for the first time in NSA, the behavior of selected criteria air pollutants during the implementation of the SARS-CoV-2 lockdown in two high populated cities of the region: Bogotá and Medellín in Colombia. A set of tools including surface measurements, as well as satellite and modeled data were used. 24-hour average concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 were collected from air quality stations for the lockdown period ranging from February 21 to June 30, 2020. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) was used to analyze the fire flux OC as a biomass burning (BB) indicator, and tropospheric NO2 concentrations were retrieved from TROPOMI. The HYSPLIT model was used to analyze back trajectories and fire data were obtained from MODIS sensor measurements. Our analysis shows short-term background NO2, PM10, and PM2.5 concentration reductions of 60%, 44%, and 40%, respectively, for the strict lockdown; and 62%, 58%, and 69% for the relaxed lockdown. Corresponding long-term reductions were of 50%, 32%, and 9% for the strict lockdown; and 37%, 29%, and 19% for the relaxed lockdown. Regional BB increased PM2.5 concentrations by 20 μg/m3 during the strict lockdown, and the Saharan dust event increased PM10 concentrations up to 168 μg/m3 in Bogotá, and 104 μg/m3 in Medellín, bringing an additional risk of morbidity and mortality for population. Regional BB has several causes that need to be properly managed to benefit local air quality improvement plans. Separation of ethanol from many sources, mainly renewable sources, is commonly achieved by atmospheric distillation. Even so, there is new technologies for ethanol separation and purification: pressure-swing distillation, extractive distillation, adsorption with molecular sieves and vacuum membrane distillation. The design, rating and optimization of these process technologies requires a reliable and universal thermodynamic modeling approach capable of represents the ethanol-water system properties, and in particular the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) near the azeotropic point. This study resume experimental data of VLE for ethanol-water system at vacuum pressures (13.15-101.32 kPa) and its corresponding thermodynamic consistency test results using the Redlich-Kister method. The parameters and constants for the detailed thermodynamic modeling of the ethanol-water system using polar fluid Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state (polar-SRK) are resumed, as well as the standard binary interaction parameters for NRTL and UNIQUAC excess Gibbs energy models commonly used for the simulations involved in the chemical process engineering activities. This study contains the regression of new binary interaction parameters in a temperature dependent form compatible with the most process simulation software, for NRTL and UNIQUAC, and its validation using experimental data for azeotropic points at different low pressures with errors of less than 1% for temperature and ethanol molar fraction in vapor phase estimation. The new parameters were tested using isobaric experimental data for VLE at 3 under-atmospheric pressures obtaining correlation coefficient (R 2 ) values of about 1. The calculations were performed using python 3.4® codes developed and supplied by S&SE and Aspen properties® V8.6 provided by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

CFD, procesamiEl procesamiento de gas natural requiere la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías en un contexto de aumento de la demanda en todo el mundo. La separación de líquidos de gas natural (LGN) utilizando dispositivos supersónicos, es una novedosa y eficiente manera de reducir el volumen de equipos instalados y costos, utilizando los efectos de los flujos circulares altamente turbulentos. En esta investigación se implementa dinámica computacional de fluidos (CFD) para mejorar la eficiencia del proceso típico de recuperación de LGN utilizando el enfoque supersónico. También se puso en práctica un nuevo enfoque de modelado de la turbulencia con el objetivo de minimizar el tiempo de procesamiento, los resultados obtenidos fueron validados con datos experimentales disponibles. Esta investigación se basa en el modelo llamado k-épsilon RNG modificado para flujo remolino; este modelo no se ha utilizado ni validado antes en sistemas de flujo altamente compresibles, turbulentos y circulares. La eficiencia del proceso fue mejorada en un 11% en comparación con la eficiencia reportada en investigaciones previas, y el tiempo de procesamiento para el modelado redujo 40% con el enfoque turbulencia propuesto y ajustado. Durante la validación del modelo k-épsilon RNG modificado para flujo remolino el factor de remolino, parte del modelo de turbulencia, se ajustó a un valor óptimo para sistemas de flujo compresibles, turbulentos y circulares que participan en procesos de separación de NGL supersónico, lo que permite obtener resultados más precisos y con un menor tiempo de procesamiento en comparación con otros enfoques típicos y comunes como RSM y LES.

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) public transport systems, are highly frequented micro environments by the population of a city. In this research a TSI DustTrak II was used to determine the PM2.5 concentration inside the buses of the BRT system in Bogota, and a GPS app, MyCarTracks®, to record the speed and location data. Measurements were performed in three different segments of the system, and in different seats inside the buses. PM2.5 concentration levels above 120 µg/m3 were measured for all the segments. Time travels of the BRT passengers was determined to be around 20 to 40 minutes average, where they are exposed directly to these high levels of pollution. Thereafter, a CFD model was implemented to simulate and assess the behavior of the tailpipe emissions. Contours of concentration showed the self-pollution phenomenon as a fraction around 18% of the total concentration of PM 2.5 measured inside the cabin of the BRT.

Investigaciones a nivel mundial han demostrado que la exposicion a Material Particulado PM2.5 en transporte publico es mayor frente a otros modos de transporte, como en TransMilenio en Bogota debido al tipo de alimentacion de los vehiculos. Se determino la concentracion de PM2.5 al interior de los sistemas de transporte masivo de Bogota (TransMilenio) y Medellin (SITVA) a partir del analisis de mas de 160.000 datos de concentracion de PM2.5, georreferenciados. Se obtuvieron concentraciones promedio de 167μg/m3 en TransMilenio y 41μg/m3 en SITVA, superando significativamente la concentracion de exposicion a PM2.5 de 25μg/m3 recomendada por la OMS. Se analizo tambien la exposicion personal mediante el calculo de dosis promedio de PM2.5 que para TransMilenio fue de 2.3μg/min y en el SITVA de 0.53μg/min, evidenciando que los pasajeros del SITVA presentan una exposicion personal menor que de TransMilenio.

In Havana, transport is blamed as a likely source of pollution issues, which is usually supported on arguments referring to a vehicle fleet mainly made of old cars (i.e., most models are American from the 1950s or Russian from the 1980s) with poor technical conditions. Most of the existing studies are based on measurements from passive samplers collected for 24 h, which may not be representative of conditions where pollutant concentrations (particles or gases) fluctuate or are not homogeneous, such as transport-related pollution. The goal of this paper is to explore the transport-generated pollution by examining short-time correlations between traffic flows, pollutant concentrations and meteorological parameters. To do that, statistical relationships among all variables were analyzed, which revealed that PM 10 , NO 2 and SO 2 concentration levels are influenced by vehicular traffic, mainly with low-speed winds blowing perpendicular to the street axis. Furthermore, southeast and northeast winds force drag pollutionfrom sources other than traffic. These conclusions depend on the specific conditions of the summer season at the measurement area. A more complete analysis could be conducted when more data becomes available for each season.

espanolRESUMEN Este trabajo presenta las emisiones del sistema de transporte masivo (BRT) TransMilenio, en comparacion con otros medios de transporte de pasajeros de Bogota, Colombia. Se empleo la metodologia Analisis de Ciclo de Vida (ACV) del pozo a las ruedas (well-to-wheels). Se uso el software OpenLCA®, la base de datos Ecoinvent y la informacion disponible en la ciudad. Se consideraron la categoria de impacto cambio climatico (emisiones de C0(2-eq)) y las emisiones de PM2.5, CO y NOx. Se utilizo la unidad funcional masa de contaminante por kilometro y por pasajero transportado (masa/km-pasajero). El ACV indica que las emisiones mas bajas por kilometro-pasajero de CO2-eq, CO y NOx las genera el TransMilenio, mientras que los BRT electricos y los buses a gas natural tienen las menores emisiones de PM2.5. Las motocicletas generan las mayores emisiones de PM2.5, mientras que los taxis generan las emisiones de NOx. Finalmente, si los buses de TransMilenio cambiasen de diesel a electricidad las emisiones de CO2-eq, y PM2.5 se reducirian en 86% y 88%, respectivamente. Sin embargo, esta reduccion es poco significativa si se compara con la reduccion que se obtendria si las estrategias se enfocaran en el control de las emisiones generadas por otras categorias de vehiculos. portuguesRESUMO Este trabalho apresenta as emissoes do sistema de transporte em massa (BRT) TransMilenio, comparado com outros meios de transporte de passageiros de Bogota, Colombia. A metodologia utilizada foi a Analise do Ciclo de Vida (ACV) well-to-wheels. O software e o banco de dados utilizados foram o OpenLCA® e o Ecoinvent, respectivamente, alem de outras informacoes disponiveis na cidade. O trabalho considerou as categorias de impacto mudanca climatica (emissoes de C0(2-eq)) e as emissoes de PM2.5, CO e NOx. Foi utilizada a unidade funcional massa de poluente por quilometro e por passageiro transportado (massa/km-passageiro). O ACV indica que as emissoes mais baixas por quilometro-passageiro de C0(2-eq), CO e NOx sao geradas pelo TransMilenio, enquanto os BRT eletricos e os onibus a gas natural tem as melhores emissoes de PM2.5. As maiores emissoes de PM2.5 sao geradas pelas motocicletas, e as emissoes de NOx sao geradas pelos taxis. Finalmente, se os onibus do TransMilenio mudassem de diesel para eletricidade as emissoes de C0(2-eq) e PM2.5 seriam reduzidas em 86% e 88%, respectivamente. No entanto, essa reducao e pouco significativa quando comparada com a reducao que seria conseguida se as estrategias estiveram focadas no controle das emissoes geradas por outras categorias de veiculos. EnglishABSTRACT This work presents Life Cycle Emissions from the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) TransMilenio compared to other modes of passenger transportation in Bogota, Colombia®. We applied the life-cycle assessment (LCA) and the well-to-wheels approach. We used the OpenLCA software, the Ecoinvent database and all the information available in the city to perform this LCA. The impact category climate change (C0(2-eq)) and emissions of PM2.5, CO and NOx were considered. The functional unit is mass of pollutant per kilometer and per passenger transported (mass/km-passenger). Results of this work indicate that public transport buses including BRT produce the lowest emissions of CO2-eq, CO and NOx. While the lowest emissions of PM2.5 were achieved by an electric BRT and buses powered by natural gas. The highest emissions of PM2.5 are given by motorcycles and private cars, and taxis present the highest emissions of NOx. Finally, if TransMilenio buses change from diesel to electricity, C02-eq and PM2.5 emissions would be reduced by 86% and 88%, respectively. However, these values are lowerthan reductions achieved when strategies are focused on controlling emissions from other vehicle categories.

In the vast majority of Latin American and South American countries, global emission inventories (EIs) are often used for modelling air quality. In particular the Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research EDGAR is widely deployed but several studies have pointed to some gaps in comparison with national/regional inventories which incur errors in interpreting results. In Cuba, due to scarcity of a spatially distributed national inventory, EDGAR has been used as entry for air quality modelling without verifying their reliability over the region. Our goal in this article is to compare and contrast EDGAR with a local inventory and to evaluate similarities or discrepancies. We use advanced comparison techniques developed by the Forum for Air Quality Modelling in Europe–FAIRMODE. This approach differs from others in the detailed way in which it points out the differences and gets insights in possible explanations. Overall, EDGAR provided spatially smoother results and relatively lower values in hotspot areas. Coarse differences in terms of activities were low for all analyzed sectors. However, EDGAR overestimates emission factors (EFs) of stationary sources for CO by a factor of 3 and SO2 by a factor of 1.5 while underestimates those of PPM10 by a factor of 25. Most of the road transport EFs are overestimated in EDGAR; PM10, CO and NOx are 2 times higher, while CH4 and SO2 are 5 to 20 times higher. Large differences were found on the spatial distribution of energy and industrial sources. EDGAR can be regionally accepted as a reference but it is not recommended for air quality simulation over Cuba. A more complete reporting must be expected when more official national data are due. A review and evaluation of local emission inventories over Cuba can be useful for identifying potential areas for future improvement.

Se selecciono, adapto y aplico una metodologia practica y economica para determinar las emisiones del parque automotor de la ciudad de Bogota. La metodologia esta basada en mediciones de calidad de aire, parametros meteorologicos, conteos de vehiculos y la aplicacion inversa de un modelo de calidad de aire. Se presentan los resultados de un estudio de trazadores con el cual se valido la aplicacion del modelo empleado. Se reportan los factores de emision promedio de los contaminantes evaluados para vehiculos livianos, pesados y para todos los vehiculos. Las emisiones de los vehiculos pesados son considerablemente mayores a las de los vehiculos livianos.

Road traffic emission factors (EFs) are one of the main sources of uncertainties in emission inventories; it is necessary to develop methods to reduce these uncertainties to manage air quality more efficiently. Recently an alternative method has been proposed to estimate the EFs. In that work the emission factors were estimated from a long term tracer study developed in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) Vietnam. A passive tracer was continuously emitted from a finite line source placed in one side of an urban street canyon. Simultaneously, the resulting tracer concentrations were monitored at the other side of the street. The results of this experiment were used to calculate the dispersion factors and afterwards, these dispersion factors were used to estimate the EFs. In this paper we use the Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) model WinMISKAM to critically evaluate the proposed methodology. In a first step, we use the results of the tracer study to validate the CFD model. Results show that the model is able to simulate quite well the tracer dispersion in most of the cases. The model is then used to evaluate the effect of varying the source configuration and to correct the EFs. A comparison with available studies shows that the corrected EFs are within the range of the EFs reported in other studies. Finally, the CFD model is used to find a source configuration that better represents the vehicle emissions and that may be used in future studies to estimate the EFs more accurately. Results show that a 200 m line placed in the center of the street would represent very well the vehicle emissions. This work shows that it is possible to accurately estimate the EFs from tracer studies.

Road traffic emissions, one of the largest source categories in megacity inventories, are highly uncertain. It is essential to develop methodologies to reduce these uncertainties to manage air quality more effectively. In this paper, we propose a methodology to estimate road traffic emission factors (EFs) from a tracer experiment and from roadside pollutants measurements. We emitted continuously during about 300 non-consecutive hours a passive tracer from a finite line source placed on one site of an urban street. At the same time, we measured continuously the resulting tracer concentrations at the other side of the street with a portable on-line gas chromatograph. We used n-propane contained in commercial liquid petroleum gas (LPG) as a passive tracer. Propane offers several advantages to traditional tracers (SF6, N2O, CFCs): low price, easily available, non-reactive, negligible global warming potential, and easy to detect with commercial on-line gas chromatographs. The tracer experiment was carried out from January to March 2007 in a busy street of Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). Traffic volume, weather information and pollutant concentrations were also measured at the measurement site. We used the results of the tracer experiment to calculate the dilution factors and afterwards we used these dilution factors, the traffic counts and the pollutant concentrations to estimate the EFs. The proposed method assumes that the finite emission line represents the emission produced by traffic in the full area of the street and therefore there is an error associated to this assumption. We use the Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) model MISKAM to calculate this error and to correct the HCMC EFs. EFs for 15 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NO are reported here. A comparison with available studies reveals that most of the EFs estimated here are within the range of EFs reported in other studies.

This study shows the results of an Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor with immersed filtration cartridges for granular biomass retention working at high hydraulic loading rates. Biomass retention capabilities, granular biomass structure and activity, filtration cartridges flux and organic material degradation performance were evaluated. Four reactors with a volume of 0.005 m3 were tested. Two different filtration cartridges were used (10 and 100 μm) with effective surface area of 0.05 m2. The filtration cartridges were submerged in the reactors for suction type filtration. Three organic loading rates were tested in the first two reactors and seven in the other two. Selective biomass washout and an increment in the biomass methanogenic activity was observed in the reactors at hydraulic loading rates between 1.2 and 4.5 m/h. Analyses of biomass granulometry showed an increase of larger size granular biomass. The immersed membrane anaerobic bioreactor maintain most of the advantages without biomass activity loss.

Already published studies found that 20% of the atmospheric pollution variations are linked to local meteorology. This relationship may be more important in places with dense populations such as Latin American cities since the topography and fast multiscale changes are part of the tropical climate. Even so, this possibility has not been addressed in previous studies. This research aims to characterize the relationship between tropical climate variables and PM2.5 levels during high pollution events. The relationship between wind field, Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE), radiation, temperature, relative humidity, boundary layer height, and atmospheric stability with PM2.5 concentration was investigated. Statistical correlations and the parcel method were used to analyze the relationship between vertical motions and PM2.5. Obtained results show that the stability, vertical velocity, and boundary layer height do not significantly affect pollution levels. We identified some signals that are strongly related to PM2.5 high concentrations: weaker than average horizontal wind speed and TKE throughout the day, easterly winds in the morning (associated with the transport of ashes from wildfires produced on the Eastern plains), combined with a higher than average radiation peak. These results lead to a better understanding of the PM2.5 variations, which can be applied for the improvement of air quality models and have the potential to be part of a novel policy to manage air quality risk.
