The cold interstellar medium (ISM) as the raw material for star formation is critical to understanding galaxy evolution. It is generally understood that galaxies stop making stars when, in one way or another, they run out of gas. However, here we provide evidence that central spiral galaxies remain rich in atomic gas even if their star formation rate (SFR) and molecular gas fraction have dropped significantly compared to “normal” star-forming galaxies of the same mass. Since H i is sensitive to external processes, here we investigate central spiral galaxies using a combined sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey, and the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey. After proper incompleteness corrections, we find that the key H i scaling relations for central spirals show significant but regular systematic dependence on stellar mass. At any given stellar mass, the H i gas mass fraction is about constant with changing specific star formation rate (sSFR), which suggests that H i reservoir is ubiquitous in central spirals with any star formation status down to M _* ∼ 10 ^9 M _⊙ . Together with the tight correlation between the molecular gas mass fraction and sSFR for galaxies across a wide range of different properties, it suggests that the decline of SFR of all central spirals in the local Universe is due to the halt of H _2 supply, though there is plenty of H i gas around. These hence provide critical observations of the dramatically different behavior of the cold multiphase ISM, and a key to understand the star formation process and quenching mechanism.

In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

The Event Horizon Telescope observed the horizon-scale synchrotron emission region around the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in 2017. These observations revealed a bright, thick ring morphology with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μ as and modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry, consistent with the expected appearance of a black hole with mass M ≈ 4 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ . From these observations, we present the first resolved linear and circular polarimetric images of Sgr A*. The linear polarization images demonstrate that the emission ring is highly polarized, exhibiting a prominent spiral electric vector polarization angle pattern with a peak fractional polarization of ∼40% in the western portion of the ring. The circular polarization images feature a modestly (∼5%–10%) polarized dipole structure along the emission ring, with negative circular polarization in the western region and positive circular polarization in the eastern region, although our methods exhibit stronger disagreement than for linear polarization. We analyze the data using multiple independent imaging and modeling methods, each of which is validated using a standardized suite of synthetic data sets. While the detailed spatial distribution of the linear polarization along the ring remains uncertain owing to the intrinsic variability of the source, the spiraling polarization structure is robust to methodological choices. The degree and orientation of the linear polarization provide stringent constraints for the black hole and its surrounding magnetic fields, which we discuss in an accompanying publication.

We investigate the kinematics and dynamics of the molecular and ionized gas in the host galaxies of three Palomar-Green quasars at low redshifts, benefiting from the archival millimeter-wave interferometric and optical integral field unit data. We study the kinematics of both cold molecular and hot ionized gas by analyzing the CO and H α data cubes, and construct the mass distributions of our sample through gas dynamics, utilizing a priori knowledge regarding the galaxy light distribution. We find no systematic offset between the stellar mass derived from our dynamical method and that from the broadband photometry and mass-to-light ratio, suggesting the consistency of both methods. We then study the kinetic pressure and the weight of the interstellar medium (ISM) using our dynamical mass model. By studying the relationship between kinetic pressure and gravitational pressure of the quasar host galaxies, we find an equivalence in the hydrostatic equilibrium states of ISM in the quasar host galaxies, similar to the result of gas equilibrium in normal star-forming galaxies, suggesting minimal quasar feedback. Regarding noncircular motion as indicative of quasar-driven outflows, we observe an exceptionally low coupling efficiency between molecular gas outflow and active galactic nucleus bolometric luminosities. These results demonstrate the marginal influence of the central engine on the properties of cold molecular gas in quasar host galaxies.

We present a catalog of clouds identified from the ^12 CO (1–0) data of M83, which was observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array with a spatial resolution of ∼46 pc and a mass sensitivity of ∼10 ^4 M _⊙ (3 σ ). The almost full-disk coverage and high sensitivity of the data allowed us to sample 5724 molecular clouds with a median mass of ∼1.9 × 10 ^5 M _⊙ , which is comparable to the most frequently sampled mass of giant molecular clouds by surveys in the Milky Way (MW). About 60% of the total CO luminosity in M83's disk arises from clouds more massive than 10 ^6 M _⊙ . Such massive clouds comprise 16% of the total clouds in number and tend to concentrate toward the arm, bar, and center, while smaller clouds are more prevalent in interarm regions. Most >10 ^6 M _⊙ clouds have peak brightness temperatures T _peak above 2 K with the current resolution. Comparing the observed cloud properties with the scaling relations determined by P. M. Solomon et al. ( 1987 , hereafter S87 ), T _peak > 2 K clouds follow the relations, but T _peak < 2 K clouds, which are dominant in number, deviate significantly. Without considering the effect of beam dilution, the deviations would suggest modestly high virial parameters (median α _vir ∼ 2.7) and low surface mass densities (median Σ ∼ 22 M _⊙ pc ^−2 ) for the entire cloud samples, which are similar to values found for the MW clouds by T. S. Rice et al. ( 2016 ) and M.-A Miville-Deschênes et al. ( 2017 ). However, once beam dilution is taken into account, the observed α _vir and Σ for a majority of the clouds (mostly T _peak

We present 0.″22 resolution CO(2–1) observations of the circumnuclear gas disk in the local compact galaxy NGC 384 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). While the majority of the disk displays regular rotation with projected velocities rising to 370 km s ^−1 , the inner ∼0.″5 exhibits a kinematic twist. We develop warped disk gas-dynamical models to account for this twist, fit those models to the ALMA data cube, and find a stellar mass-to-light ratio in the H band of M / L _H = 1.34 ± 0.01 [1 σ statistical] ±0.02 [systematic] M _⊙ / L _⊙ and a supermassive black hole (BH) mass ( M _BH ) of M _BH $=({7.26}_{-0.48}^{+0.43}[1\sigma \,\mathrm{statistical}{]}_{-1.00}^{+0.55}[\mathrm{systematic}])\times {10}^{8}\,{M}_{\odot }$ . In contrast to most previous dynamical M _BH measurements in local compact galaxies, which typically found over-massive BHs compared to the local BH mass−bulge luminosity and BH mass−bulge mass relations, NGC 384 lies within the scatter of those scaling relations. NGC 384 and other local compact galaxies are likely relics of z ∼ 2 red nuggets, and over-massive BHs in these relics indicate BH growth may conclude before the host galaxy stars have finished assembly. Our NGC 384 results may challenge this evolutionary picture, suggesting there may be increased scatter in the scaling relations than previously thought. However, this scatter could be inflated by systematic differences between stellar- and gas-dynamical measurement methods, motivating direct comparisons between the methods for NGC 384 and the other compact galaxies in the sample.

Time-domain studies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) offer a powerful tool for understanding black hole accretion physics. Prior to the optical outburst on 2017 December 23, 1ES 1927+654 was classified as a “true” type 2 AGN, an unobscured source intrinsically devoid of broad-line emission in polarized spectra. Through our 3 yr monitoring campaign spanning X-ray to ultraviolet/optical wavelengths, we analyze the post-outburst evolution of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 1ES 1927+654. Examination of the intrinsic SED and subsequent modeling using different models reveal that the post-outburst spectrum is best described by a combination of a disk, blackbody, and corona components. We detect systematic SED variability and identify four distinct stages in the evolution of these components. During the event the accretion rate is typically above the Eddington limit. The correlation between ultraviolet luminosity and optical to X-ray slope ( α _OX ) resembles that seen in previous studies of type 1 AGNs, yet exhibits two distinct branches with opposite slopes. The optical bolometric correction factor ( κ _5100 ) is ∼10 times higher than typical AGNs, again displaying two distinct branches. Correlations among the corona optical depth, disk surface density, and α _OX provide compelling evidence of a disk–corona connection. The X-ray corona showcases systematic variation in the compactness-temperature plot. Between 200 and 650 days, the corona is “hotter when brighter,” whereas after 650 days, it becomes “cooler when brighter.” This bimodal behavior, in conjunction with the bifurcated branches of α _OX and κ _5100 , offers strong evidence of a transition from a slim disk to a thin disk ∼650 days after the outburst.

The properties of slim accretion disks, while crucial for our understanding of black hole growth, have yet to be studied extensively observationally. We analyze the multiepoch broadband spectral energy distribution of the changing-look active galactic nucleus 1ES 1927+654 to derive the properties of its complex, time-dependent accretion flow. The accretion rate decays as $\dot{M}\propto {t}^{-1.53}$ , consistent with the tidal disruption of a 1.1 M _⊙ star. Three components contribute to the spectral energy distribution: a central overheated zone resembling a slim disk, an outer truncated thin disk, and a hot corona. Photon trapping in the slim disk triggered by the high initial $\dot{M}$ was characterized by a low radiation efficiency (3%), which later more than doubled (8%) after $\dot{M}$ dropped sufficiently low for the disk to transition to a geometrically thin state. The blackbody temperature profile T ∝ R ^−0.60 for the inner overheated zone matches the theoretical expectations of a slim disk, while the effective temperature profile of T ∝ R ^−0.69 for the outer zone is consistent with the predictions of a thin disk. Both profiles flatten toward the inner boundary of the disk as a result of Compton cooling in the corona. Our work presents compelling observational evidence for the existence of slim accretion disks and elucidates the key parameters governing their behavior, paving the way for further exploration in this area.

Over the past three decades, multiple reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns conducted for the quasar PG 2130+099 have exhibited inconsistent findings with time delays ranging from ∼10 to ∼200 days. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of the geometry and dynamics of the broad-line region (BLR) in PG 2130+099, we continued an ongoing high-cadence RM monitoring campaign using the Calar Alto Observatory 2.2 m optical telescope for an extra four years from 2019 to 2022. We measured the time lags of several broad emission lines (including He ii , He i , H β , and Fe ii ) with respect to the 5100 Å continuum, and their time lags continuously vary through the years. Especially, the H β time lags exhibited approximately a factor of 2 increase in the last two years. Additionally, the velocity-resolved time delays of the broad H β emission line reveal a back-and-forth change between signs of virial motion and inflow in the BLR. The combination of negligible (∼10%) continuum change and substantial time-lag variation (over 2 times) results in a significant scatter in the intrinsic R _H _β – L _5100 relationship for PG 2130+099. Taking the consistent changes in the continuum variability time scale and the size of the BLR into account, we tentatively propose that the changes in the measurement of the BLR size may be affected by “geometric dilution”

To investigate the short-term variability and determine the size of the optical continuum emitting region of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), we carried out high-cadence, multiband photometric monitoring of a Seyfert 1 galaxy J0249−0815 across two nights, together with a one-night single-band preliminary test. The presence of the broad H α component in our target was confirmed by recent Palomar/P200 spectroscopic observations, 23 yr after the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, ruling out the supernovae origin of the broad H α line. The photometric experiment was primarily conducted utilizing four-channel imagers MuSCAT 3 and 4 mounted on 2 m telescopes within the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network. Despite the expectation of variability, we observed no significant variation (

We conduct a reverberation mapping (RM) campaign to spectroscopically monitor a sample of selected bright active galactic nuclei with large anticipated broad-line region (BLR) sizes adequate for spectroastrometric (SA) observations by the GRAVITY instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. We report the first results for five objects, IC 4329A, Mrk 335, Mrk 509, Mrk 1239, and PDS 456, among which Mrk 1239 and PDS 456 are for the first time spectroscopically monitored. We obtain multiyear monitoring data and perform multicomponent spectral decomposition to extract the broad H β profiles. We detect significant time lags between the H β and continuum variations, generally obeying the previously established BLR size–luminosity relation. Velocity-resolved H β time lags illustrate diverse, possibly evolving, BLR kinematics. We further measure the H β line widths from mean and rms spectra and the resulting virial products show good consistency among different observing seasons. Adopting a unity virial factor and the FWHM of the broad H β line from the mean spectra as a measure of velocity, the obtained black hole masses averaged over seasons are $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\bullet }/{M}_{\odot }={8.02}_{-0.14}^{+0.09}$ , ${6.92}_{-0.12}^{+0.12}$ , ${8.01}_{-0.25}^{+0.16}$ , ${7.44}_{-0.14}^{+0.13}$ , and ${8.59}_{-0.11}^{+0.07}$ for the five objects, respectively. Black hole mass estimations using other line width measures are also reported. For objects with previous RM campaigns, our mass estimates are in agreement with earlier results. In a companion paper, we will employ BLR dynamical modeling to directly infer the black hole mass and thereby determine the virial factors.

The supermassive black holes ( M _BH ∼ 10 ^6 –10 ^10 M _⊙ ) that power luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs), i.e., quasars, generally show a correlation between thermal disk emission in the ultraviolet (UV) and coronal emission in hard X-rays. In contrast, some “massive” black holes (mBHs; M _BH ∼ 10 ^5 –10 ^6 M _⊙ ) in low-mass galaxies present curious X-ray properties with coronal radiative output up to 100× weaker than expected. To examine this issue, we present a pilot study incorporating Very Large Array radio observations of a sample of 18 high-accretion-rate (Eddington ratios L _bol / L _Edd > 0.1), mBH-powered AGNs ( M _BH ∼ 10 ^6 M _⊙ ) with Chandra X-ray coverage. Empirical correlations previously revealed in samples of radio-quiet, high-Eddington AGNs indicate that the radio–X-ray luminosity ratio, L _R / L _X , is approximately constant. Through multiwavelength analysis, we instead find that the X-ray-weaker mBHs in our sample tend toward larger values of L _R / L _X even though they remain radio-quiet per their optical–UV properties. This trend results in a tentative but highly intriguing correlation between L _R / L _X and X-ray weakness, which we argue is consistent with a scenario in which X-rays may be preferentially obscured from our line of sight by a “slim” accretion disk. We compare this observation to weak emission-line quasars (AGNs with exceptionally weak broad-line emission and a significant X-ray-weak fraction) and conclude by suggesting that our results may offer a new observational signature for finding high-accretion-rate AGNs.

We update the H i surface density measurements for a subset of 17 THINGS galaxies by dealing with the short-spacing problem of the original Very Large Array (VLA) H i images. It is the same sample that Bigiel et al. used to study the relation between H i surface densities and star formation (SF) rate surface densities in galaxy outer disks, which are beyond the optical radius r _25 . For 10 galaxies, the update is based on combining original THINGS VLA H i images with H i images taken by the single-dish FAST in the FEASTS program. The median increment of H i surface densities in outer disks is 0.15–0.4 dex at a given new H i surface density. Several galaxies change significantly in the shape of radial profiles H i surface densities, and seven galaxies are now more than 1 σ below the H i size–mass relation. We update the H i star formation laws in outer disks. The median relation between the H i surface densities and SF rate surface densities based on pixel-wise measurements shifts downward by around 0.15 dex because the H i surface density values shift rightward, and the scatter increases significantly. The scatter of the relation, indicating the star-forming efficiency, exhibits a much stronger positive correlation with the stellar mass surface density than before. Thus, detecting the previously missed, diffuse H i due to the short-spacing problem of the Very Large Array observations is important in revealing the true condition and variation in SF possibly regulated by stellar feedbacks in the localized environment of outer disks.

Dusty circumnuclear disks (CNDs) in luminous early-type galaxies (ETGs) show regular, dynamically cold molecular gas kinematics. For a growing number of ETGs, Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) CO imaging and detailed gas-dynamical modeling facilitate moderate-to-high precision black hole (BH) mass ( M _BH ) determinations. From the ALMA archive, we identified a subset of 26 ETGs with estimated M _BH / M _⊙ ≳ 10 ^8 to a few × 10 ^9 and clean CO kinematics but that previously did not have sufficiently high-angular-resolution near-IR observations to mitigate dust obscuration when constructing stellar luminosity models. We present new optical and near-IR Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of this sample to supplement the archival HST data, detailing the sample properties and data-analysis techniques. After masking the most apparent dust features, we measure stellar surface-brightness profiles and model the luminosities using the multi-Gaussian expansion (MGE) formalism. Some of these MGEs have already been used in CO dynamical modeling efforts to secure quality M _BH determinations, and the remaining ETG targets here are expected to significantly improve the high-mass end of the current BH census, facilitating new scrutiny of local BH mass–host galaxy scaling relationships. We also explore stellar isophotal behavior and general dust properties, finding these CNDs generally become optically thick in the near-IR ( A _H ≳ 1 mag). These CNDs are typically well aligned with the larger-scale stellar photometric axes, with a few notable exceptions. Uncertain dust impact on the MGE often dominates the BH mass error budget, so extensions of this work will focus on constraining CND dust attenuation.

The properties of the galaxies are tightly connected to their host halo mass and halo assembly history. Accurate measurement of the halo assembly history in observation is challenging but crucial to the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. The stellar-to-halo mass ratio ( M _* / M _h ) for the centrals has often been used to indicate the halo assembly time t _h,50 of the group, where t _h,50 is the lookback time at which a halo has assembled half of its present-day virial mass. Using mock data from the semi-analytic models, we find that M _* / M _h shows a significant scatter with t _h,50 , with a strong systematic difference between the group with a star-forming central (blue group) and passive central (red group). To improve the accuracy, we develop machine learning models to estimate t _h,50 for galaxy groups using only observable quantities in the mocks. Since star formation quenching will decouple the co-growth of the dark matter and baryon, we train our models separately for blue and red groups. Our models have successfully recovered t _h,50 , within an accuracy of ∼1.09 Gyr. With careful calibrations of individual observable quantities in the mocks with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) observations, we apply the trained models to the SDSS Yang et al. groups and derive the t _h,50 for each group for the first time. The derived SDSS t _h,50 distributions are in good agreement with that in the mocks, in particular for blue groups. The derived halo assembly history, together with the halo mass, make an important step forward in studying the halo–galaxy connections in observation.

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870 μ m wavelength (345 GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on intercontinental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in 2018 October. The longest-baseline detections approach 11 G λ , corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19 μ as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870 μ m is comparable to that at 1.3 mm on the relevant integration timescales between 2 and 100 s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870 μ m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time.

We present confusion-limited SCUBA-2 450 μ m observations in the COSMOS-CANDELS region as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Large Program SCUBA-2 Ultra Deep Imaging EAO Survey. Our maps at 450 and 850 μ m cover an area of 450 arcmin ^2 . We achieved instrumental noise levels of σ _450 = 0.59 mJy beam ^−1 and σ _850 = 0.09 mJy beam ^−1 in the deepest area of each map. The corresponding confusion noise levels are estimated to be 0.65 and 0.36 mJy beam ^−1 . Above the 4 σ (3.5 σ ) threshold, we detected 360 (479) sources at 450 μ m and 237 (314) sources at 850 μ m. We derive the deepest blank-field number counts at 450 μ m, covering the flux-density range of 2–43 mJy. These are in agreement with other SCUBA-2 blank-field and lensing-cluster observations but are lower than various model counts. We compare the counts with those in other fields and find that the field-to-field variance observed at 450 μ m at the $R=6^{\prime} $ scale is consistent with Poisson noise, so there is no evidence of strong 2D clustering at this scale. Additionally, we derive the integrated surface brightness at 450 μ m down to 2.1 mJy to be ${57.3}_{-6.2}^{+1.0}$ Jy deg ^−2 , contributing to 41% ± 4% of the 450 μ m extragalactic background light (EBL) measured by Cosmic Background Explorer and Planck. Our results suggest that the 450 μ m EBL may be fully resolved at ${0.08}_{-0.08}^{+0.09}$ mJy, which extremely deep lensing-cluster observations and next-generation submillimeter instruments with large aperture sizes may be able to achieve.

It is believed that dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) form during galaxy mergers. Studying dual-AGN emission can provide valuable insights into galaxy merging and evolution. To investigate parsec-scale radio emission properties, we observed eight radio components of four selected dual-AGN systems using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 GHz in multiple-phase-center mode. Among them, two compact radio components, labeled J0051+0020B and J2300-0005A, were detected clearly on parsec scales for the first time. However, the radio emission of the other six components was resolved out in the high-resolution images. We provide the values or upper limits of the brightness temperature and radio emission power, and analyze the emission origins in detail for each target. Based on their physical properties reported in this work and in the literature, we suggest that the radio emission in J0051+0020B and J2300-0005A originates primarily from compact jets, while the other six sources show more complex emission mechanisms. In addition, our VLBA observations suggest that the systematic X-ray deficit in our dual-AGN sample is likely attributed to the tidally induced effect and possibly a viewing angle effect.

We present a statistical study of the properties of diffuse H i in 10 nearby galaxies, comparing the H i detected by the single-dish telescope FAST (FEASTS program) and the interferometer Very Large Array (THINGS program), respectively. The THINGS observation missed H i with a median of 23% due to the short-spacing problem of interferometry and limited sensitivity. We extract the diffuse H i by subtracting the dense H i , which is obtained from the THINGS data with a uniform flux-density threshold, from the total H i detected by FAST. Among the sample, the median diffuse-H i fraction is 34%, and more diffuse H i is found in galaxies exhibiting more prominent tidal-interaction signatures. The diffuse H i we detected seems to be distributed in disk-like layers within a typical thickness of 1 kpc, different from the more halo-like diffuse H i detected around NGC 4631 in a previous study. Most of the diffuse H i is cospatial with the dense H i and has a typical column density of 10 ^17.7 –10 ^20.1 cm ^−2 . The diffuse and dense H i exhibit a similar rotational motion, but the former lags by a median of 25% in at least the inner disks, and its velocity dispersions are typically twice as high. Based on a simplified estimation of circumgalactic medium properties and assuming pressure equilibrium, the volume density of diffuse H i appears to be constant within each individual galaxy, implying its role as a cooling interface. Comparing with existing models, these results are consistent with a possible link between tidal interactions, the formation of diffuse H i , and gas accretion.

We report first-time reverberation-mapping results for 14 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the ongoing Monitoring AGNs with H β Asymmetry campaign (MAHA). These results utilize optical spectra obtained with the Long Slit Spectrograph on the Wyoming Infrared 2.3 m Telescope between 2017 November and 2023 May. MAHA combines long-duration monitoring with high cadence. We report results from multiple observing seasons for nine of the 14 objects. These results include H β time lags, supermassive black hole masses, and velocity-resolved time lags. The velocity-resolved lags allow us to investigate the kinematics of the broad-line region.

We present the final data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Reverberation Mapping (RM) project, a precursor to the SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper RM program. This data set includes 11 yr photometric and 7 yr spectroscopic light curves for 849 broad-line quasars over a redshift range of 0.1 < z < 4.5 and a luminosity range of L _bol = 10 ^44−47.5 erg s ^−1 , along with spectral and variability measurements. We report 23, 81, 125, and 110 RM lags (relative to optical continuum variability) for broad H α , H β , Mg ii , and C iv using the SDSS-RM sample, spanning much of the luminosity and redshift ranges of the sample. Using 30 low-redshift RM active galactic nuclei with dynamical-modeling black hole masses, we derive a new estimate of the average virial factor of $\left\langle \mathrm{log}f\right\rangle =0.62\pm 0.07$ for the line dispersion measured from the rms spectrum. The intrinsic scatter of individual virial factors is 0.31 ± 0.07 dex, indicating a factor of 2 systematic uncertainty in RM black hole masses. Our lag measurements reveal significant R – L relations for H β and Mg ii at high redshift, consistent with the latest measurements based on heterogeneous samples. While we are unable to robustly constrain the slope of the R – L relation for C iv given the limited dynamic range in luminosity, we found substantially larger scatter in C iv lags at fixed L _1350 . Using the SDSS-RM lag sample, we derive improved single-epoch (SE) mass recipes for H β , Mg ii , and C iv , which are consistent with their respective RM masses as well as between the SE recipes from two different lines, over the luminosity range probed by our sample. The new H β and Mg ii recipes are approximately unbiased estimators at given RM masses, but there are systematic biases in the C iv recipe. The intrinsic scatter of SE masses around RM masses is ∼0.45 dex for H β and Mg ii , increasing to ∼0.58 dex for C iv .

We present the first results from the Revealing Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (ReveaLLAGN) survey, a JWST survey of seven nearby LLAGNs. We focus on two observations with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI)’s Medium-Resolution Spectrometer of the nuclei of NGC 1052 and Sombrero (NGC 4594/M104). We also compare these data to public JWST data of higher-luminosity AGNs, NGC 7319 and NGC 7469. JWST clearly separates the AGN spectrum from the galaxy light even in Sombrero, the faintest target in our survey; the AGN components have very red spectra. We find that the emission-line widths in both NGC 1052 and Sombrero increase with increasing ionization potential, with FWHM > 1000 km s ^−1 for lines with ionization potential ≳ 50 eV. These lines are also significantly blueshifted in both LLAGNs. The high-ionization-potential lines in NGC 7319 show neither broad widths nor significant blueshifts. Many of the lower-ionization-potential emission lines in Sombrero show significant blue wings extending >1000 km s ^−1 . These features and the emission-line maps in both galaxies are consistent with outflows along the jet direction. Sombrero has the lowest-luminosity high-ionization-potential lines ([Ne v ] and [O iv ]) ever measured in the mid-infrared, but the relative strengths of these lines are consistent with higher-luminosity AGNs. On the other hand, the [Ne v ] emission is much weaker relative to the [Ne iii ] and [Ne ii ] lines of higher-luminosity AGNs. These initial results show the great promise that JWST holds for identifying and studying the physical nature of LLAGNs.

Accretion of black holes at near-Eddington or super-Eddington rates represents the most powerful episode driving black hole growth, potentially occurring across various types of objects. However, the physics governing accretion and jet–disk coupling in such states remains unclear, primarily due to the difficulty in detecting associated jets, which may emit extremely weakly or exhibit episodic behavior. Only a few near/super-Eddington systems have demonstrated radio activity, and it remains uncertain whether jets exist and what their properties are in super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources. This uncertainty stems mainly from the complex radio emission mix, which includes contributions from jets, star formation activity, photoionized gas, accretion disk wind, and coronal activity. In this work, we conducted high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry observations to investigate jets in the highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert I system I Zw 1. Our observations successfully revealed small-scale jets (with a linear size of ∼45 pc) at both 1.5 and 5 GHz, based on the high radio brightness temperature, radio morphology, and spectral index distribution. Additionally, the parsec-scale jet observed in I Zw 1 displays a knotted morphology reminiscent of other sources accreting at similar rates. In summary, the high accretion rates and jet properties observed in the AGN I Zw 1 may support the AGN/X-ray binary analogy in this extreme state.

We present molecular gas-dynamical mass measurements of the central black holes in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 4786 and NGC 5193, based on CO (2−1) observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared imaging. The central region in each galaxy contains a circumnuclear disk that exhibits orderly rotation with projected line-of-sight velocities of ∼270 km s ^−1 . We build gas-dynamical models for the rotating disk in each galaxy and fit them directly to the ALMA data cubes. At 0.″31 resolution, the ALMA observations do not fully resolve the black hole sphere of influence (SOI), and neither galaxy exhibits a central rise in rotation speed, indicating that emission from deep within the SOI is not detected. As a result, our models do not tightly constrain the central black hole mass in either galaxy, but they prefer the presence of a central massive object in both galaxies. We measure the black hole mass to be $({M}_{\mathrm{BH}}/{10}^{8}\,{M}_{\odot })=5.0\pm 0.2\,[1\sigma \,\mathrm{statistical}]{\,}_{-1.3}^{+1.4}\,[\mathrm{systematic}]$ in NGC 4786 and $({M}_{\mathrm{BH}}/{10}^{8}\,{M}_{\odot })=1.4\pm 0.03\,[1\sigma \,\mathrm{statistical}{]}_{-0.1}^{+1.5}\,[\mathrm{systematic}]$ in NGC 5193. The largest component of each measurement’s error budget is from the systematic uncertainty associated with the extinction correction in the host galaxy models. This underscores the importance of assessing the impact of dust attenuation on the inferred M _BH .

The inclination angle of substructures in active galaxies gives insights into physical components from scales of the vicinity of the central black hole to the entire host galaxy. We use the self-consistent reflection spectral model RELXILL to measure the inclination of the inner region of accretion disks with broadband (0.3–78 keV) X-ray observations, systematically studying the reliability of this methodology. To test the capability of the model to return statistically consistent results, we analyze multiepoch joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 and the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 382, which exhibit different degrees of spectral complexity and reflection features. As expected, we find that adding more data for analysis narrows the confidence interval and that multiepoch joint observations return optimal measurements; however, even single-epoch data can be well fitted if the reflection component is sufficiently dominant. Mock spectra are used to test the capability of RELXILL to recover input parameters from typical single-epoch joint observations. We find that inclination is well recovered at 90% confidence, with improved constraints at higher reflection fraction and higher inclination. Higher iron abundance and corona temperature tighten the constraints as well, but the effect is not as significant as a higher reflection fraction. The spin, however, has little effect in reflection-based inclination measurements. We conclude that broadband reflection spectroscopy can reliably measure inner accretion disk inclination.

In this work, we constrain the star-forming properties of all possible sites of incipient high-mass star formation in the Milky Way’s Galactic Center. We identify dense structures using the CMZoom 1.3 mm dust continuum catalog of objects with typical radii of ∼0.1 pc, and measure their association with tracers of high-mass star formation. We incorporate compact emission at 8, 21, 24, 25, and 70 μ m from the Midcourse Space Experiment, Spitzer, Herschel, and SOFIA, cataloged young stellar objects, and water and methanol masers to characterize each source. We find an incipient star formation rate (SFR) for the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of ∼0.08 M _⊙ yr ^−1 over the next few 10 ^5 yr. We calculate upper and lower limits on the CMZ’s incipient SFR of ∼0.45 and ∼0.05 M _⊙ yr ^−1 ,respectively, spanning roughly equal to and several times greater than other estimates of CMZ’s recent SFR. Despite substantial uncertainties, our results suggest the incipient SFR in the CMZ may be higher than previously estimated. We find that the prevalence of star formation tracers does not correlate with source volume density, but instead ≳75% of high-mass star formation is found in regions above a column density ratio ( N _SMA / N _Herschel ) of ∼1.5. Finally, we highlight the detection of atoll sources , a reoccurring morphology of cold dust encircling evolved infrared sources, possibly representing H ii regions in the process of destroying their envelopes.

We present a systematic study of the putative hot gas corona around late-type galaxies (LTGs) residing in the Virgo cluster, based on archival Chandra observations. Our sample consists of 21 nearly edge-on galaxies representing a range of star formation rate (SFR) of 0.2–3 M _⊙ yr ^−1 and a range of stellar mass ( M _* ) of (0.2–10) × 10 ^10 M _⊙ , the majority of which have not been explored with high-sensitivity X-ray observations so far. Significant extraplanar diffuse X-ray (0.5–2 keV) emission is detected in only three LTGs, which are also the three galaxies with the highest SFR. A stacking analysis is performed for the remaining galaxies without individual detection, dividing the whole sample into two subsets based on SFR, stellar mass, or specific SFR. Only the high-SFR bin yields a significant detection, which has a value of L _X ∼ 3 × 10 ^38 erg s ^−1 per galaxy. The stacked extraplanar X-ray signals of the Virgo LTGs are consistent with the empirical L _X –SFR and L _X – M _* relations found among highly inclined disk galaxies in the field, but appear to be systematically lower than those of a comparison sample of simulated star-forming galaxies in clusters identified from the Illustris-TNG100 simulation. The apparent paucity of hot gas coronae in the sampled Virgo LTGs might be understood as the net outcome of the long-lasting effect of ram pressure stripping exerted by the hot intracluster medium and in-disk star-forming activity acting on shorter timescales. A better understanding of the roles of environmental effects in regulating the hot gas content of cluster galaxies invites sensitive X-ray observations for a large sample of galaxies.

We analyze 347 galaxies at redshift 4 < z < 9.5 using JWST observations from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) program by simultaneously fitting a two-dimensional parametric model to the seven-filter Near Infrared Camera images to measure the overall structural parameters and quantify the global properties of the galaxies in the rest-frame optical band. Particular attention is devoted to deriving robust uncertainties that include, among other factors, the influence of cosmological surface brightness dimming and resolution effects. Using the global Sérsic index ( n < 1.5) and observed axial ratio ( q < 0.6) as a guide, we place a conservative lower limit of ∼45% on the incidence of galactic disks. Galaxies follow a relation between the rest-frame optical luminosity and effective radius in the redshift range 4 < z < 9.5, as well as separately over the intervals 4 < z < 5 and 5 ≤ z < 9.5, with a very similar slope but a marginally lower zero-point in the higher-redshift bin ( R _e = 0.69 ± 0.05 kpc) compared to the lower-redshift bin ( R _e = 0.91 ± 0.04 kpc). Within the limitations of the current sample size, we find no significant redshift evolution of n or R _e at these early epochs.

The Galaxy inner parts are generally considered to be optically symmetric, as well as kinematically symmetric for most massive early-type galaxies. At the lower-mass end, many galaxies contain lots of small patches in their velocity maps, causing their kinematics to be nonsmooth in small scales and far from symmetry. These small patches can easily be mistaken for measurement uncertainties and have not been well discussed. We used the comparison of observations and numerical simulations to demonstrate the small patches existence beyond uncertainties. For the first time we have found that the fluctuation degrees have an approximate inverse loglinear relation with the galaxy stellar surface mass densities. This tight relation among galaxies that do not show obvious optical asymmetry that traces environmental perturbations indicates that stellar motion in galaxies has inherent asymmetry besides external environment influences. The degree of the kinetic asymmetry is closely related to and constrained by the intrinsic properties of the host galaxy.

In this paper, we investigate the astrophysical processes of stellar-mass black holes (sMBHs) embedded in advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. The sMBH is undergoing Bondi accretion at a rate lower than the SMBH. Outflows from the sMBH-ADAF dynamically interact with their surroundings and form a cavity inside the SMBH-ADAF, thereby quenching the accretion onto the sMBH. Rejuvenation of the Bondi accretion is rapidly done by turbulence. These processes give rise to quasi-periodic episodes of sMBH activities and create flickerings from relativistic jets developed by the Blandford–Znajek mechanism if the sMBH is maximally rotating. Accumulating successive sMBH-outflows trigger a viscous instability of the SMBH-ADAF, leading to a flare following a series of flickerings. Recently, the similarity of near-infrared flare’s orbits has been found by GRAVITY/VLTI astrometric observations of Sgr A ^∗ : their loci during the last 4 yr consist of a ring in agreement with the well-determined SMBH mass. We apply the present model to Sgr A*, which shows quasi-periodic flickerings. An sMBH of ∼40 M _⊙ is preferred orbiting around the central SMBH of Sgr A* from fitting radio to X-ray continuum. Such an extreme mass ratio inspiraling provides an excellent laboratory for LISA/Taiji/Tianqin detection of mHz gravitational waves with strains of ∼10 ^−17 , as well as their polarization.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a millimeter very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array that has imaged the apparent shadows of the supermassive black holes M87* and Sagittarius A*. Polarimetric data from these observations contain a wealth of information on the black hole and accretion flow properties. In this work, we develop polarimetric geometric modeling methods for mm-VLBI data, focusing on approaches that fit data products with differing degrees of invariance to broad classes of calibration errors. We establish a fitting procedure using a polarimetric “m-ring” model to approximate the image structure near a black hole. By fitting this model to synthetic EHT data from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic models, we show that the linear and circular polarization structure can be successfully approximated with relatively few model parameters. We then fit this model to EHT observations of M87* taken in 2017. In total intensity and linear polarization, the m-ring fits are consistent with previous results from imaging methods. In circular polarization, the m-ring fits indicate the presence of event-horizon-scale circular polarization structure, with a persistent dipolar asymmetry and orientation across several days. The same structure was recovered independently of observing band, used data products, and model assumptions. Despite this broad agreement, imaging methods do not produce similarly consistent results. Our circular polarization results, which imposed additional assumptions on the source structure, should thus be interpreted with some caution. Polarimetric geometric modeling provides a useful and powerful method to constrain the properties of horizon-scale polarized emission, particularly for sparse arrays like the EHT.

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations have revealed a bright ring of emission around the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. EHT images in linear polarization have further identified a coherent spiral pattern around the black hole, produced from ordered magnetic fields threading the emitting plasma. Here we present the first analysis of circular polarization using EHT data, acquired in 2017, which can potentially provide additional insights into the magnetic fields and plasma composition near the black hole. Interferometric closure quantities provide convincing evidence for the presence of circularly polarized emission on event-horizon scales. We produce images of the circular polarization using both traditional and newly developed methods. All methods find a moderate level of resolved circular polarization across the image (〈∣ v ∣〉 < 3.7%), consistent with the low image-integrated circular polarization fraction measured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (∣ v _int ∣ < 1%). Despite this broad agreement, the methods show substantial variation in the morphology of the circularly polarized emission, indicating that our conclusions are strongly dependent on the imaging assumptions because of the limited baseline coverage, uncertain telescope gain calibration, and weakly polarized signal. We include this upper limit in an updated comparison to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation models. This analysis reinforces the previously reported preference for magnetically arrested accretion flow models. We find that most simulations naturally produce a low level of circular polarization consistent with our upper limit and that Faraday conversion is likely the dominant production mechanism for circular polarization at 230 GHz in M87*.

We report on the discovery of two low-luminosity, broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z > 5 identified using JWST NIRSpec spectroscopy from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey. We detect broad H α emission in the spectra of both sources, with FWHM of 2060 ± 290 km s ^−1 and 1800 ± 200 km s ^−1 , resulting in virial black hole (BH) masses that are 1–2 dex below those of existing samples of luminous quasars at z > 5. The first source, CEERS 2782 at z = 5.242, is 2–3 dex fainter than known quasars at similar redshifts and was previously identified as a candidate low-luminosity AGN based on its morphology and rest-frame optical spectral energy distribution (SED). We measure a BH mass of M _BH = (1.3 ± 0.4) × 10 ^7 M _⊙ , confirming that this AGN is powered by the least massive BH known in the Universe at the end of cosmic reionization. The second source, CEERS 746 at z = 5.624, is inferred to be a heavily obscured, broad-line AGN caught in a transition phase between a dust-obscured starburst and an unobscured quasar. We estimate its BH mass to be in the range of M _BH ≃ (0.9–4.7) × 10 ^7 M _⊙ , depending on the level of dust obscuration assumed. We perform SED fitting to derive host stellar masses, M _⋆ , allowing us to place constraints on the BH–galaxy mass relationship in the lowest mass range yet probed in the early Universe. The M _BH / M _⋆ ratio for CEERS 2782, in particular, is consistent with or higher than the empirical relationship seen in massive galaxies at z = 0. We examine the narrow emission line ratios of both sources and find that their location on the BPT and OHNO diagrams is consistent with model predictions for moderately low metallicity AGNs with Z / Z _⊙ ≃ 0.2–0.4. The spectroscopic identification of low-luminosity, broad-line AGNs at z > 5 with M _BH ≃ 10 ^7 M _⊙ demonstrates the capability of JWST to push BH masses closer to the range predicted for the BH seed population and provides a unique opportunity to study the early stages of BH–galaxy assembly.

We combine mid-infrared diagnostics obtained from integral-field-unit observations taken with Mid-Infrared Instrument/Medium Resolution Spectrograph on the James Webb Space Telescope with cold molecular gas information derived from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO(1–0) emission to investigate the star formation rate and efficiency within the central ∼1.5 kpc × 1.3 kpc region of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 on ∼100 pc scales. The active nucleus leaves a notable imprint on its immediate surroundings by elevating the temperature of the warm molecular gas, driving an ionized gas outflow on subkiloparsec scales, and selectively destroying small dust grains. These effects, nevertheless, have relatively little impact on the cold circumnuclear medium or its ability to form stars. Most of the star formation in NGC 7469 is confined to a clumpy starburst ring, but the star formation efficiency remains quite elevated even for the nuclear region that is most affected by the active nucleus.

We report a candidate of a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z = 5 that was selected from the first near-infrared images of the JWST CEERS project. This source, named CEERS-AGN-z5-1 at absolute 1450 Å magnitude M _1450 = −19.5 ± 0.3, was found via a visual selection of compact sources from a catalog of Lyman break galaxies at z > 4, taking advantage of the superb spatial resolution of the JWST/NIRCam images. The 20 photometric data available from CFHT, Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer, and JWST suggest that the continuum shape of this source is reminiscent of that for an unobscured AGN, and there is a clear color excess in the filters where the redshifted H β +[O iii ] and H α are covered. The estimated line luminosity is L _H _β _+[O _III _] = 10 ^43.0 erg s ^−1 and L _H _α = 10 ^42.9 erg s ^−1 with the corresponding rest-frame equivalent width EW _H _β _+[O _III _] = 1100 Å and EW _H _α = 1600 Å, respectively. Our spectral energy distribution fitting analysis favors the scenario that this object is either a strong broad-line emitter or even a super-Eddington accreting black hole (BH), although a possibility of an extremely young galaxy with moderate dust attenuation is not completely ruled out. The bolometric luminosity, L _bol = 2.5 ± 0.3 × 10 ^44 erg s ^−1 , is consistent with those of z < 0.35 broad-line AGNs with M _BH ∼ 10 ^6 M _⊙ accreting at the Eddington limit. This new AGN population in the first 1.1 billion years of the universe may close the gap between the observed BH mass range at high redshift and that of BH seeds. Spectroscopic confirmation is awaited to secure the redshift and its AGN nature.

A key question in galaxy evolution has been the importance of the apparent “clumpiness” of high-redshift galaxies. Until now, this property has been primarily investigated in rest-frame UV, limiting our understanding of their relevance. Are they short-lived or are they associated with more long-lived massive structures that are part of the underlying stellar disks? We use JWST/NIRCam imaging from the Cosmic Evolution and Epoch of Reionization Survey to explore the connection between the presence of these “clumps” in a galaxy and its overall stellar morphology, in a mass-complete ( $\mathrm{log}\,{M}_{* }/{M}_{\odot }\gt 10.0$ ) sample of galaxies at 1.0 < z < 2.0. Exploiting the uninterrupted access to rest-frame optical and near-IR light, we simultaneously map the clumps in galactic disks across our wavelength coverage, along with measuring the distribution of stars among their bulges and disks. First, we find that the clumps are not limited to the rest-frame UV and optical, but are also apparent in near-IR with ∼60% spatial overlap. This rest-frame near-IR detection indicates that clumps would also feature in the stellar-mass distribution of the galaxy. A secondary consequence is that these will hence be expected to increase the dynamical friction within galactic disks leading to gas inflow. We find a strong negative correlation between how clumpy a galaxy is and strength of the bulge. This firmly suggests an evolutionary connection, either through clumps driving bulge growth or the bulge stabilizing the galaxy against clump formation, or a combination of the two. Finally, we find evidence of this correlation differing from rest-frame optical to near-IR, which could suggest a combination of varying formation modes for the clumps.

In 2017 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ( λ = 1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT data sets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars—which typically exhibit steep emission spectra—are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the fast folding algorithm, and single-pulse searches targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission. We use the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction (≲2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region.

The assembly of galaxies over cosmic time is tightly connected to the assembly of their host dark matter halos. We investigate the stellar mass growth history and the chemical enrichment history of central galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory. We find that the derived stellar metallicity of passive central galaxies is always higher than that of the star-forming ones. This stellar metallicity enhancement becomes progressively larger toward low-mass galaxies (at a given epoch) and earlier epochs (at a given stellar mass), which suggests strangulation as the primary mechanism for star formation quenching in central galaxies not only in the local Universe but also very likely at higher redshifts up to z ∼ 3. We show that at the same present-day stellar mass, passive central galaxies assembled half of their final stellar mass ∼2 Gyr earlier than star-forming central galaxies, which agrees well with the semi-analytic model. Exploring the semi-analytic model, we find that this is because passive central galaxies reside in, on average, more massive halos with a higher halo mass increase rate across cosmic time. As a consequence, passive central galaxies are assembled faster and also quenched earlier than their star-forming counterparts. While at the same present-day halo mass, different halo assembly history also produces a very different final stellar mass of the central galaxy within, and halos assembled earlier host more massive centrals with a higher quenched fraction, in particular around the “golden halo mass” at 10 ^12 M _⊙ . Our results call attention back to the dark matter halo as a key driver of galaxy evolution.

We present 0.″22-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO(2−1) emission from the circumnuclear gas disk in the red nugget relic galaxy PGC 11179. The disk shows regular rotation, with projected velocities near the center of 400 km s ^−1 . We assume the CO emission originates from a dynamically cold, thin disk and fit gas-dynamical models directly to the ALMA data. In addition, we explore systematic uncertainties by testing the impacts of various model assumptions on our results. The supermassive black hole (BH) mass ( M _BH ) is measured to be M _BH = (1.91 ± 0.04 [1 σ statistical] ${}_{-0.51}^{+0.11}$ [systematic]) × 10 ^9 M _⊙ , and the H -band stellar mass-to-light ratio M / L _H = 1.620 ± 0.004 [1 σ statistical] ${}_{-0.107}^{+0.211}$ [systematic] M _⊙ / L _⊙ . This M _BH is consistent with the BH mass−stellar velocity dispersion relation but over-massive compared to the BH mass−bulge luminosity relation by a factor of 3.7. PGC 11179 is part of a sample of local compact early-type galaxies that are plausible relics of z ∼ 2 red nuggets, and its behavior relative to the scaling relations echoes that of three relic galaxy BHs previously measured with stellar dynamics. These over-massive BHs could suggest that BHs gain most of their mass before their host galaxies do. However, our results could also be explained by greater intrinsic scatter at the high-mass end of the scaling relations, or by systematic differences in gas- and stellar-dynamical methods. Additional M _BH measurements in the sample, including independent cross-checks between molecular gas- and stellar-dynamical methods, will advance our understanding of the co-evolution of BHs and their host galaxies.

Using the multi-epoch mid-infrared (MIR) photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer spanning a baseline of ∼10 yr, we extensively investigate the MIR variability of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 0.15 < z < 0.4. We find that the ensemble structure function in the W1 band (3.4 μ m) can be modeled with a broken power law. Type 1 AGNs tend to exhibit larger variability amplitudes than type 2 AGNs, possibly due to the extinction by the torus. The variability amplitude is inversely correlated with the AGN luminosity, consistent with a similar relation known in the optical. Meanwhile, the slope of the power law increases with AGN luminosity. This trend can be attributed to the fact that the inner radius of the torus is proportional to the AGN luminosity, as expected from the size−luminosity relation of the torus. Interestingly, low-luminosity type 2 AGNs, unlike low-luminosity type 1 AGNs, tend to exhibit smaller variability amplitude than do high-luminosity AGNs. We argue that either low-luminosity type 2 AGNs have distinctive central structures due to their low luminosity or their MIR brightness is contaminated by emission from the cold dust in the host galaxy. Our findings suggest that the AGN unification scheme may need to be revised. We find that the variability amplitude of dust-deficient AGNs is systematically larger than that of normal AGNs, supporting the notion that the hot and warm dust in dust-deficient AGNs may be destroyed and reformed according to the strength of the ultraviolet radiation from the accretion disk.

We present polarization-sensitive images from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 GHz of 11 radio-quiet PG quasars. Based on the radio morphology, spectral index, and polarization properties from the VLA study, coupled with the findings of our previous 685 MHz uGMRT data, we find the presence of low-power jets on subarcsecond and arcsecond scales in nine sources; some show signatures of bent jets. The origin of radio emission remains unclear in the remaining two sources. Of the 11 sources, linear polarization is detected in four of them with fractional polarization ranging between 2% and 21%. In PG 1229+204, the inferred B-field direction is parallel to the local kiloparsec-scale jet direction. The inferred B-fields are transverse to the weak southward extension in PG 0934+013. For PG 0050+124 and PG 0923+129, the relationship between the B-field structure and radio outflow direction remains unclear. Localized or small-scale jet–medium interactions can be inferred across the sample based on the VLA jet kinetic power arguments and polarization data. These may have the potential as a feedback mechanism. We find that the radio properties do not show strong correlations with the star formation, [O iii ] and CO quantities published in the literature. The lack of evidence of AGN feedback on the global galaxy properties could be due to the relative timescales of AGN activity and those over which any impact might be taking place.

Combining new H i data from a synergetic survey of Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) Widefield ASKAP L -band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY and Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope with the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA data, we study the effect of ram pressure and tidal interactions in the NGC 4636 group. We develop two parameters to quantify and disentangle these two effects on gas stripping in H i -bearing galaxies: the strength of external forces at the optical-disk edge, and the outside-in extents of H i -disk stripping. We find that gas stripping is widespread in this group, affecting 80% of H i -detected nonmerging galaxies, and that 41% are experiencing both types of stripping. Among the galaxies experiencing both effects, the two types of strengths are independent, while two H i -stripping extents moderately anticorrelate with each other. Both strengths are correlated with H i -disk shrinkage. The tidal strength is related to a rather uniform reddening of low-mass galaxies ( M _* < 10 ^9 M _☉ ) when tidal stripping is the dominating effect. In contrast, ram pressure is not clearly linked to the color-changing patterns of galaxies in the group. Combining these two stripping extents, we estimate the total stripping extent, and put forward an empirical model that can describe the decrease of H i richness as galaxies fall toward the group center. The stripping timescale we derived decreases with distance to the center, from ∼1 Gyr beyond R _200 to ≲10 Myr near the center. Gas depletion happens ∼3 Gyr since crossing 2 R _200 for H i -rich galaxies, but much quicker for H i -poor ones. Our results quantify in a physically motivated way the details and processes of environmental-effects-driven galaxy evolution, and might assist in analyzing hydrodynamic simulations in an observational way.

We search for quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) in a wide area of the south ecliptic pole (SEP) field, which has been and will continue to be intensively explored through various space missions. For this purpose, we obtain deep broadband optical images of the SEP field covering an area of ∼14.5 × 14.5 deg ^2 with the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet). The 5 σ detection limits for point sources in the BVRI bands are estimated to be ∼22.59, 22.60, 22.98, and 21.85 mag, respectively. Utilizing data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, unobscured QSO candidates are selected among the optically pointlike sources using mid-infrared (MIR) and optical–MIR colors. To refine our selection further and eliminate any contamination not adequately removed by the color-based selection, we perform spectral energy distribution fitting with archival photometric data ranging from optical to MIR. As a result, we identify a total of 2383 unobscured QSO candidates in the SEP field. We also apply a similar method to the north ecliptic pole field using Pan-STARRS data and obtain a similar result of identifying 2427 candidates. The differential number count per area of our QSO candidates is in good agreement with those measured from spectroscopically confirmed ones in other fields. Finally, we compare the results with the literature and discuss how this work will impact future studies, especially upcoming space missions.

We measure the correlation between black hole mass M _BH and host stellar mass M _* for a sample of 38 broad-line quasars at 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 0.8 (median redshift z _med = 0.5). The black hole masses are derived from a dedicated reverberation mapping program for distant quasars, and the stellar masses are derived from two-band optical+IR Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Most of these quasars are well centered within ≲1 kpc from the host galaxy centroid, with only a few cases in merging/disturbed systems showing larger spatial offsets. Our sample spans two orders of magnitude in stellar mass (∼10 ^9 –10 ^11 M _⊙ ) and black hole mass (∼10 ^7 –10 ^9 M _⊙ ) and reveals a significant correlation between the two quantities. We find a best-fit intrinsic (i.e., selection effects corrected) M _BH – M _*,host relation of $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\mathrm{BH}}/{M}_{\odot })={7.01}_{-0.33}^{+0.23}+{1.74}_{-0.64}^{+0.64}\mathrm{log}({M}_{* ,\mathrm{host}}/{10}^{10}{M}_{\odot })$ , with an intrinsic scatter of ${0.47}_{-0.17}^{+0.24}$ dex. Decomposing our quasar hosts into bulges and disks, there is a similar M _BH – M _*,bulge relation with slightly larger scatter, likely caused by systematic uncertainties in the bulge–disk decomposition. The M _BH – M _*,host relation at z _med = 0.5 is similar to that in local quiescent galaxies, with negligible evolution over the redshift range probed by our sample. With direct black hole masses from reverberation mapping and the large dynamical range of the sample, selection biases do not appear to affect our conclusions significantly. Our results, along with other samples in the literature, suggest that the locally measured black hole mass–host stellar mass relation is already in place at z ∼ 1.

Strong iron lines are a common feature of the optical spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars from z ∼ 6−7 to the local universe, and [Fe/Mg] ratios do not show cosmic evolution. During active episodes, accretion disks surrounding supermassive black holes (SMBHs) inevitably form stars in the self-gravitating part, and these stars accrete with high accretion rates. In this paper, we investigate the population evolution of accretion-modified stars (AMSs) to produce iron and magnesium in AGNs. The AMSs, as a new type of star, are allowed to have any metallicity but without significant loss from stellar winds, since the winds are choked by the dense medium of the disks and return to the core stars. Mass functions of the AMS population show a pile-up or cutoff pile-up shape in top-heavy or top-dominant forms if the stellar winds are strong, consistent with the narrow range of supernovae (SNe) explosions driven by the known pair-instability. This provides an efficient way to produce metals. Meanwhile, SN explosions support an inflated disk as a dusty torus. Furthermore, the evolving top-heavy initial mass functions lead to bright luminosity in infrared bands in dusty regions. This contributes a new component in infrared bands, which is independent of the emissions from the central part of accretion disks, appearing as a long-term trending of the NIR continuum compared to optical variations. Moreover, the model can be further tested through reverberation mapping of emission lines, including LIGO/LISA detections of gravitational waves and signatures from spatially resolved observations of GRAVITY+/VLTI.

We assemble a broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from the optical to the mid-infrared of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z < 0.4. The SED fitting analysis is performed using semiempirical templates derived from Palomar-Green quasars to classify the sample into normal, warm-dust-deficient (WDD), and hot-dust-deficient (HDD) AGNs. Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests reveal that HDD AGNs exhibit higher AGN luminosity on average than normal and WDD AGNs. The HDD fraction, on the other hand, is only weakly correlated with the black hole mass and inversely correlated with the Eddington ratio. By fixing the other parameters, we conclude that the HDD fraction is primarily connected with the AGN luminosity. This implies that there is a causal connection between the covering factor of the hot dust component and AGN luminosity, possibly due to the sublimation of the innermost dust or the thickening of the intervening gas in the broad-line region. Analysis of the outflow properties traced by the wing of [O iii ] λ 5007 suggests that outflows may be related to the formation and maintenance of the hot dust component. Finally, we demonstrate through comparison with previous studies that the classification of HDD AGNs requires careful subtraction of the host galaxy light.

We explore reprocessing models for a sample of 17 hypervariable quasars, taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project, which all show coordinated optical luminosity hypervariability with amplitudes of factors ≳2 between 2014 and 2020. We develop and apply reprocessing models for quasar light curves in simple geometries that are likely to be representative of quasar inner environments. In addition to the commonly investigated thin-disk model, we include the thick-disk and hemisphere geometries. The thick-disk geometry could, for instance, represent a magnetically elevated disk, whereas the hemisphere model can be interpreted as a first-order approximation for any optically thick out-of-plane material caused by outflows/winds, warped/tilted disks, and so on. Of the 17 quasars in our sample, 11 are best-fitted by a hemisphere geometry, five are classified as thick disks, and both models fail for just one object. We highlight the successes and shortcomings of our thermal reprocessing models in case studies of four quasars that are representative of the sample. While reprocessing is unlikely to explain all of the variability that we observe in quasars, we present our classification scheme as a starting point for revealing the likely geometries of reprocessing for quasars in our sample and hypervariable quasars in general.

Interactions and mergers play an important role in regulating the physical properties of galaxies, such as their morphology, gas content, and star formation rate (SFR). Controversy exists as to the degree to which these events, even gas-rich major mergers, enhance star formation activity. We study merger pairs selected from a sample of massive ( M _* ≥ 10 ^10 M _⊙ ), low-redshift ( z = 0.01–0.11) galaxies located in the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using stellar masses, SFRs, and total dust masses derived from a new set of uniformly measured panchromatic photometry and spectral energy distribution analysis. The dust masses, when converted to equivalent total atomic and molecular hydrogen, probe gas masses as low as ∼10 ^8.5 M _⊙ . Our measurements delineate a bimodal distribution on the M _gas – M _* plane: the gas-rich, star-forming galaxies that trace the well-studied gas mass main sequence, and passive galaxies that occupy a distinct, gas-poor regime. These two populations, in turn, map into a bimodal distribution on the relation between SFR and gas mass surface density. Among low-redshift galaxies, galaxy mergers, including those that involve gas-rich and nearly equal-mass galaxies, exert a minimal impact on their SFR, specific SFR, or star formation efficiency. Starbursts are rare. The star formation efficiency of gas-rich, minor mergers even appears suppressed. This study stresses the multiple, complex factors that influence the evolution of the gas and its ability to form stars in mergers.

The broadband spectral energy distribution of a galaxy encodes valuable information on its stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), dust content, and possible fractional energy contribution from nonstellar sources. We present a comprehensive catalog of panchromatic photometry, covering 17 bands from the far-ultraviolet to 500 μ m, for 2685 low-redshift ( z = 0.01–0.11), massive ( M _* > 10 ^10 M _⊙ ) galaxies selected from the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, one of the largest areas with relatively deep, uniform observations over a wide range of wavelengths. Taking advantage of the deep optical coadded images, we develop a hybrid approach for matched-aperture photometry of the multiband data. We derive robust uncertainties and upper limits for undetected galaxies, deblend interacting/merging galaxies and sources in crowded regions, and treat contamination by foreground stars. We perform spectral energy distribution fitting to derive the stellar mass, SFR, and dust mass, critically assessing the influence of flux upper limits for undetected photometric bands and applying corrections for systematic uncertainties based on extensive mock tests. Comparison of our measurements with those of commonly used published catalogs reveals good agreement for the stellar masses. While the SFRs of galaxies on the star-forming main sequence show reasonable consistency, galaxies in and below the green valley show considerable disagreement between different sets of measurements. Our analysis suggests that one should incorporate the most accurate and inclusive photometry into the spectral energy distribution analysis, and that care should be exercised in interpreting the SFRs of galaxies with moderate to weak star formation activity.
