Nitrogen is a very important nutrient in grass maintenance fertilization and therefore must be applied at the appropriate moment. The objective of this study was to identify the most responsive moment to nitrogen fertilization and to verify if root mass and the content of carbohydrates and nitrogen in roots influence the moment of fertilization in cultivars of Megathyrsus maximus (syn. Panicum maximum). This study was carried out simultaneously in a greenhouse using a completely randomized design, with sixteen treatments and five replications, in a 4×4 factorial design. The treatments consisted of four intervals between cultivar defoliation and nitrogen fertilization (0, 3, 6 and 9 days) and four Megathyrsus maximus cultivars, Mombasa, BRS Zuri, BRS Quenia and BRS Tamani, which were evaluated in five regrowth cycles. No difference in forage mass was observed among cultivars when fertilization was performed on days zero, three and nine after harvesting. On day nine, Mombasa showed a higher forage mass compared to BRS Tamani. Nitrogen content in the roots of Zuri decreased when fertilization was performed on the third day after defoliation, remaining constant in the other fertilization intervals. A linear reduction in root starch in BRS Zuri was observed, while in Mombasa cultivars, a linear increase was observed when fertilization was performed nine days after harvesting. Thus, nitrogen fertilization of BRS Tamani should be carried out closer to defoliation, while Mombasa, BRS Zuri and BRS Quenia can be fertilized up to nine days after harvesting, which results in greater flexibility regarding the moment of nitrogen fertilization.

Members of the genus Hypoxylon (Ascomycota) are pleomorphic fungi mostly forming conspicuous teleomorphs, consisting of perithecia embedded into stromal tissue, and their morphology has traditionally served for species delineation. However, analysis in tandem with other phenotypic characters, such as chemical and genetic traits, proved to be a more stable predictor of interspecies and intergeneric relationships. During 2014 and 2015, a set of species identified as Hypoxylon were described from the Neotropics, exclusively relying on morphological traits. The secondary metabolite profiles of their stromata were analysed by HPLC/DAD-ESI-MS, corroborating their classification within Xylariales. Additionally, molecular data for ex-type strains of H. dussii and H. sofaiense were incorporated into an inferred molecular phylogeny of the Hypoxylaceae and allies. Furthermore, a freshly collected specimen from North Carolina was selected as epitype of Sphaeria perforata Schweinitz (syn. Hypoxylon perforatum), as its morphological/chemotaxonomic characters matched those of the holotype. Our findings demonstrate that the secondary metabolism of Hypoxylon closely correlates with both morphological features and molecular data, serving as a complement for species identification.

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of complex geometric structures across various industries. This study presents an innovative approach by integrating zinc carbonate basic (ZCB) precursor with polylactic acid (PLA) to develop composite filaments for fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers. The resulting filaments undergo surface transformation into zinc oxide (ZnO) through high-power laser irradiation. Thermal analysis (TGA-DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to confirm the decomposition of ZCB ([ZnCO₃]₂·[Zn(OH)₂]₃) into ZnO during the thermal decomposition stages. The study successfully extruded a composite filament containing 10% of ZCB, which worked adequately in 3D printing. The printed parts were analyzed through tensile tests (based on ASTM D638-5 standard), showing a notable difference in mechanical behavior between the commercial filament PLA and the composite filament (PLAC10). Laser irradiation of these samples facilitated a targeted conversion to ZnO, verified through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The integration of zinc oxide within the printed structures enhances structural stability and provides surfaces enriched with ZnO, a metal oxide with widely reported applications. Furthermore, an irradiated 3D-printed sample demonstrated chemo-resistive properties upon carbon monoxide (CO) exposure, underlining its potential as a gas sensor and confirming its semiconductor nature. This approach provides a cost-effective and efficient way to develop innovative devices with integrated functional materials.

Abstract Research demonstrates the important role of genetic factors in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). DNA sequencing of families provides a powerful approach for identifying de novo (spontaneous) variants, leading to the discovery of hundreds of clinically informative risk genes for other childhood neurodevelopmental disorders. This approach has yet to be extensively leveraged in ADHD. We conduct whole-exome DNA sequencing in 152 families, comprising a child with ADHD and both biological parents, and demonstrate a significant enrichment of rare and ultra-rare de novo gene-damaging mutations in ADHD cases compared to unaffected controls. Combining these results with a large independent case-control DNA sequencing cohort (3206 ADHD cases and 5002 controls), we identify lysine demethylase 5B (KDM5B) as a high-confidence risk gene for ADHD and estimate that 1057 genes contribute to ADHD risk. Using our list of genes harboring ultra-rare de novo damaging variants, we show that these genes overlap with previously reported risk genes for other neuropsychiatric conditions and are enriched in several canonical biological pathways, suggesting early neurodevelopmental underpinnings of ADHD. This work provides insight into the biology of ADHD and demonstrates the discovery potential of DNA sequencing in larger parent-child trio cohorts.

Emerging zoonotic diseases are one of the main threats to human and animal health. Among the agents with the potential for zoonoses, those of bacterial origin have great relevance in Public Health. Rodents are considered one of the main reservoirs of pathogens that represent a risk to human health or animal species. We used massive 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing to survey bacteria present in the spleen of six species of rodents in Panama in order to identify bacterial taxa with zoonotic potential in the country. We found 3352 bacterial Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs, i.e., phylogenetic species) in the spleen of six rodent species surveyed (Liomys adspersus, Melanomys caliginosus, Mus musculus, Proechimys semispinosus, Rattus rattus, Zygodontomys brevicauda). This bacterial community was represented by 25 phyla, 55 classes, 140 orders, 268 families, and 508 genera. The three predominant phyla were Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria, and the five predominant classes were Actinobacteria, Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria, Bacilli, and Clostridia. There were seven high-abundance genera: Acinetobacter, Bartonella, Cutibacterium, Enterococcus, Sarcina, Staphylococcus, and Wolbachia. Genera found with less abundance included Bradyrhizobium, Chryseobacterium, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Lactobacillus, Pseudonocardia, Rhodococcus, and Sphingomonas. Some of these genera (high or low abundance) have clinical importance. The identification of bacterial taxa with zoonotic potential in rodent species performed here allows us to have surveillance mechanisms for these pathogens and to be able to recognize localities to be prioritized for prevention of transmission and outbreaks, thus being of value for public health in Panama.

Abstract Only 32 countries in the world have geothermal power plants in operation, with a combined capacity of 16,318 MW installed in 198 geothermal fields with 673 individual power units. Almost 37% of those units are of flash type with a combined capacity of 8598 MW (52.7% of total), followed by binary ORC type units with 25.1% of the installed capacity. The select list of geothermal power countries continues to be headed by the US, followed by Indonesia, the Philippines and Türkiye, and generated 96,552 GWh of electricity, at an average annual capacity factor of 67.5%, which represented 0.34% of the worldwide electric generation. Electricity from geothermal origin represented more than 10% of the total generated in at least seven countries, headed by Kenya, Iceland, and El Salvador. Practically, all geothermal fields in operation are harnessing resources from hydrothermal, conventional reservoirs, through an estimate of 3700 production wells at an annual average production of almost 3 MWh per well. Things could be similar in the next few years if the current trend continues, but all can change due to the world urgency to maintain global warming below the 1.5 °C threshold in the following years.

Ionic Covalent Organic Frameworks are a special subgroup that has risen as promising materials for innovative applications. In parallel, some of the so-called Reticular Innovative Organic compounds (RIOs), which are ionic and non-ionic porous materials have been used with great versatility, for several purposes. In this work, the ionic dye-based RIO-55 was chosen to capture a series of lanthanides (Eu, Gd, Dy, and Tb) from water, observing their affinity with the lattice and the performance of the adsorbent. Thus, the higher adsorbed amount was referred to as Eu3+ (Qmax = 370 mg/g), as well as the best affinity (KL = 5x10−3), following the Langmuir model. The impregnated Eu3+@RIO-55 was used for chemical sensing, capturing dopant molecules (ephedrine and dopamine) from water, showing great performance, even after some reuse cycles. In addition, some initial fluorescence tests were performed using RIO-55 and Eu3+@RIO-55 to observe the spectrum before and after lanthanide impregnation.

Background: Trichotillomania (TTM) and excoriation disorder (ED) are impairing obsessive-compulsive related disorders that are common in the general population and for which there are no clear first-line medications, highlighting the need to better understand the underlying biology of these disorders to inform treatments. Given the importance of genetics in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), evaluating genetic factors underlying TTM and ED may advance knowledge about the pathophysiology of these body-focused repetitive behaviors. Aim: In this systematic review, we summarize the available evidence on the genetics of TTM and ED and highlight gaps in the field warranting further research. Method: We systematically searched Embase, PsycInfo, PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science for original studies in genetic epidemiology (family or twin studies) and molecular genetics (candidate gene and genome-wide) published up to June 2023. Results: Of the 3536 records identified, 109 studies were included in this review. These studies indicated that genetic factors play an important role in the development of TTM and ED, some of which may be shared across the OCD spectrum, but there are no known high-confidence specific genetic risk factors for either TTM or ED. Conclusions: Our review underscores the need for additional genome-wide research conducted on the genetics of TTM and ED, for instance, genome-wide association and whole-genome/whole-exome DNA sequencing studies. Recent advances in genomics have led to the discovery of risk genes in several psychiatric disorders, including related conditions such as OCD, but to date, TTM and ED have remained understudied.

Pseudoscorpiones are compose an ancient order of arachnids, occur in a wide variety of terrestrial habitats worldwide, with representatives of various genera occurring exclusively in insular habitats. The primary objective of this study was to determine the composition and distribution of Pseudoscorpiones within the Brazilian equatorial oceanic islands. To determine Pseudoscorpiones communities and distribution in coastal environmental habitats of the Brazilian equatorial oceanic islands (Fernando de Noronha archipelago, Rocas Atoll and St. Peter and St. Paul rocks), was defined three zones along the insular environmental gradient in the Brazilian equatorial oceanic islands. These zones include the Sand Beach (SB) closest to the intertidal zone, the Slope Forest (SF) with a sloping terrain and the Top Forest (TF) farthest from the beach. Collecting points were distributed in each zones (SB, SF, and TF) at distances greater than 1 km, with four samples collected at each point approximately 12.5 m apart from each other. The TF zone is observed only in Fernando de Noronha. In our study we found pseudoscorpions exclusively on the islands of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. We collected 5 species from the Hesperolpiidae and Syarinidae families. The SF habitats exhibited greater species richness, while the Upper Forest habitats showed greater population abundance. Notably, we recorded pseudoscorpions (Ideoblothrus amazonicus) in bird nests (Sula dactylatra) on Rata Island, suggesting the use of nests as habitat, reproduction, and, possibly, occasional transport to and from other habitats. No pseudoscorpions were found in SB environments. Landscape changes and tourism can threaten this incredible newly discovered community, vital for monitoring environmental changes in this delicate ecosystem.

Processed electroencephalogram (pEEG) is a record of electrical activity of the brain. In certain circumstances, it can reflect pathophysiological alterations and hemodynamic compromise. A 79-year-old woman diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage and postcardiac arrest status was transferred for emergency ventriculostomy. The frontal monitoring with pEEG (SedLine, Masimo) from baseline showed low frontal activity, left and right spectral edge frequency (SEF) without numerical value, low activity in bilateral density spectral array (DSA), and zero in the patient state index (PSI). After ventricular puncture and placement of the ventriculostomy system, the pEEG showed an increase in the frequency and amplitude of the four-channel waveform of the pEEG, DSA, and numerical value of SEF and PSI. The use of pEEG can determine the depth of anesthesia and perhaps detect various cerebral and systemic pathophysiological and hemodynamic alterations; however, single monitoring may not be as predictive, so the use of multimodal monitoring is recommended.

Abstract The African buffalo, Syncerus caffer, is a key species in African ecosystems. Like other large herbivores, it plays a fundamental role in its habitat acting as an ecosystem engineer. Over the last few centuries, African buffalo populations have declined because of range contraction and demographic decline caused by direct or indirect human activities. In Mozambique, historically home to large buffalo herds, the combined effect of colonialism and subsequent civil wars has created a critical situation that urgently needs to be addressed. In this study, we focused on the analysis of genetic diversity of Syncerus caffer caffer populations from six areas of Mozambique. Using genome-wide SNPs obtained from ddRAD sequencing, we examined the population structure across the country, estimated gene flow between areas under conservation management, including national reserves, and assessed the inbreeding coefficients. Our results indicate that all studied populations of Syncerus caffer caffer are genetically depauperate, with a high level of inbreeding. Moreover, buffaloes in Mozambique present a significant population differentiation between southern and central areas. We found an unexpected genotype in the Gorongosa National Park, where buffaloes experienced a dramatic population size reduction, that shares a common ancestry with southern populations of Catuane and Namaacha. This could suggest the past occurrence of a connection between southern and central Mozambique and that the observed population structuring could reflect recent events of anthropogenic origin. All the populations analysed showed high levels of homozygosity, likely due to extensive inbreeding over the last few decades, which could have increased the frequency of recessive deleterious alleles. Improving the resilience of Syncerus caffer caffer in Mozambique is essential for preserving the ecosystem integrity. The most viable approach appears to be facilitating translocations and re-establishing connectivity between isolated herds. However, our results also highlight the importance of assessing intraspecific genetic diversity when considering interventions aimed at enhancing population viability such as selecting suitable source populations.

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by significant metabolic disruptions, including weight loss and hypermetabolism in both patients and animal models. Leptin, an adipose-derived hormone, displays altered levels in ALS. Genetically reducing leptin levels (Lepob/+) to maintain body weight improved motor performance and extended survival in female SOD1G93A mice, although the exact molecular mechanisms behind these effects remain elusive. Here, we corroborated the sexual dimorphism in circulating leptin levels in ALS patients and in SOD1G93A mice. We reproduced a previous strategy to generate a genetically deficient leptin SOD1G93A mice (SOD1G93ALepob/+) and studied the transcriptomic profile in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and the spinal cord. We found that leptin deficiency reduced the inflammation pathways activated by the SOD1G93A mutation in the adipose tissue, but not in the spinal cord. These findings emphasize the importance of considering sex-specific approaches in metabolic therapies and highlight the role of leptin in the systemic modulation of ALS by regulating immune responses outside the central nervous system.

BackgroundMultiple Sclerosis (MS) is a common neurological disease among white populations of European origin. Frequencies among Latin Americans continue to be studied, however, epidemiologic, and clinical characterization studies lack from Central American and Caribbean countries. Ethnicity in these countries is uniformly similar with a prevalent Mestizo population.Methods and resultsData from January 2014 to December 2019 from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, and Aruba on demographic, clinical, MRI and phenotypic traits were determined in coordinated studies: ENHANCE, a population-based, retrospective, observational study on incidence and clinical characteristics, and from the subgroup with MS national registries (Aruba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Panama), data on prevalence, phenotypes and demographics. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), and therapeutic schemes were included. ENHANCE data from 758 patients disclosed 79.8% of Mestizo ethnicity; 72.4% female; median age at onset 31.0 years and 33.2 at diagnosis. The highest incidence rate was from Aruba, 2.3–3.5 × 100,000 inhabitants, and the lowest, 0.07–0.15 × 100,000, from Honduras. Crude prevalence rates per 100,000 inhabitants fluctuated from 27.3 (Aruba) to 1.0 (Honduras). Relapsing MS accounted for 87.4% of cases; EDSS

ABSTRACT: Pythiosis is a life-threatening disease that affects various species and is prevalent in regions with high humidity. The ailment is increasingly reported globally, and in Brazil, it is an important cause of profound economic and health losses in equines. This study aimed to explore the potential of intradermal immunotherapy as both a diagnostic and therapeutic approach for pythiosis in horses from the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The horses were divided into three groups: those never diagnosed with pythiosis or with lesions that could be mistaken for pythiosis (Group 1); previously infected but successfully treated horses (Group 2); and horses with a positive diagnosis for pythiosis that were under treatment (Group 3). An immunotherapeutic product (PitiumVac®) was administered intradermally. Injection site reaction and response to immunotherapy were assessed. The results indicated that intradermal immunotherapy could be a viable diagnostic and therapeutic tool, particularly in remote areas where traditional laboratory diagnosis methods are not readily accessible. The efficacy of intradermal administration was comparable to that of subcutaneous administration in treating pythiosis in horses, and the combined use of immunotherapy and triamcinolone acetonide yielded promising results for treating pythiosis in horses. However, further research is required to validate these findings. This study contributes to understanding and managing pythiosis more efficiently by providing a simple, cost-effective, and potentially efficient alternative approach to diagnosis and treatment.

Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) play an important role in ensuring performance reliability to create safety and comfort during the operation of autonomous vehicles, by efficiently communicating their current state and driving intentions to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. The motivation for this study emerges from the increasing development of autonomous vehicles and the critical need for effective HMIs to bridge the communication gap between these vehicles and their users. Examples of HMI technologies include visual displays for status updates, auditory alerts for immediate hazards, and haptic feedback for enhanced control. During automated driving tasks that may require users to take control of the vehicle under certain conditions, the interfaces must support the situational awareness of the drivers by providing effective communication of the situation. Design challenges include ensuring intuitive interaction, minimizing driver distraction, and achieving seamless integration with advanced vehicle control systems. The objective of this literature review is to present a comprehensive overview of the development of human-machine interface technologies in autonomous vehicles in different domain areas and to identify design challenges and opportunities to improve their interaction with their users.

This work originates from the realization that, in a transformed impedance thru-reflect-line (TRL) calibration, the sensitivity to random measurement errors is affected by impedance discrepancies between the impedance transformer and the device-under-test (DUT). Through a thorough exploration that includes theoretical analysis, simulations and TRL measurements, this study establishes that the accuracy of de-embedding operations on a transformed impedance medium is intricately tied to the difference between the Thevenin impedance seen from the DUT-side of the launcher and the DUT impedance. A noteworthy finding is that minimizing this difference enhances the resilience of the de-embedding process against random measurement errors, being advantageous for precision modeling techniques, and demonstrating the importance of considering those concepts when designing an access structure to a DUT.

This paper analyzes the performance of the Doherty power amplifier (DPA) with the injection of the second harmonic component generated by the carrier power amplifier (PA) into the peaking PA and vice-versa, using a harmonic injection network (HIN). A mathematical analysis is presented to estimate the second harmonic loads seen by the carrier and peaking PAs in the presence of the HIN. Furthermore, a step-by-step design guide to designing a harmonic injection DPA (HI-DPA) is also presented. It is noted that the passive load provided by the output matching network ( $Z'_{c2}$ and $Z'_{p2}$ ), the electrical length of the HIN ( $\theta _{inj}$ ), and the phase difference between the currents of the carrier and peaking PAs ( $\theta _{p}$ ) at the second harmonic are crucial to present an active load to either the carrier or peaking PAs. In the HI-DPA, it is not possible to achieve an active second harmonic load for the carrier and peaking PAs simultaneously. Due to the interaction between the carrier and peaking PAs at the second harmonic, if the carrier PA sees an active load, the peaking PA sees a passive load, and vice-versa. The HI-DPA is designed with the HIN, and its performance is compared with the high-efficiency passive harmonic-tuned DPA. It is demonstrated that both the carrier and peaking PAs cannot see an active impedance at the second harmonic simultaneously. However, it is possible to increase the efficiency in the Doherty load-modulation region with the harmonic injection technique using the HIN. This would be translated into an average efficiency increase when the PA is excited with the modulated signal.

In this study, we investigated the phase transition of cobalt spinel (Co3O4) nanoparticles into Co3-xNixO4/CoO heterostructures by introducing varying amounts of nickel (x = 0.0–0.16) and subjecting the particles to high annealing temperatures of 1000 ℃. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the Co3-xNixO4CoO structure for all samples. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) provided further insights into the phase or heterostructure of the samples after annealing, revealing the arrangement of the two phases. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements demonstrated a band shift around 537 cm-1 with increasing Ni content, while ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) measurements indicated the energy band (Eg). Significant morphological changes were observed in scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements at 0.16 Ni, displaying irregular agglomerates. Our findings suggest that introducing Ni into the Co3O4 structure and increasing the annealing temperature to 1000 ℃ can lead to the formation of a heterostructured system. Furthermore, our study's significance is highlighted by the streamlined synthesis of NiCo2O4/CoO using the sol-gel method followed by calcination. This departure from complex techniques provides an efficient route to acquiring the NiCo2O4/CoO system, a promissory material for advancing supercapacitor research.

Abstract Background Persistent headache is a frequent symptom after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and there is currently limited knowledge about its clinical spectrum and predisposing factors. A subset of patients may be experiencing new daily persistent headache (NDPH) after COVID-19, which is among the most treatment-refractory primary headache syndromes. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in Latin America to characterize individuals with persistent headache after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and to identify factors associated with NDPH. Participants over 18 years old who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection and reported persistent headache among their symptoms completed an online survey that included demographics, past medical history, persistent headache clinical characteristics, and COVID-19 vaccination status. Based on participants’ responses, NDPH diagnostic criteria were used to group participants into NDPH and non-NDPH groups. Participant data was summarized by descriptive statistics. Student’s t and Mann–Whitney U tests were used according to the distribution of quantitative variables. For categorical variables, Pearson’s chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used according to the size of expected frequencies. Binomial logistic regression using the backward stepwise selection method was performed to identify factors associated with NDPH. Results Four hundred and twenty-one participants from 11 Latin American countries met the inclusion criteria. One in four participants met the NDPH diagnostic criteria. The mean age was 40 years, with most participants being female (82%). Over 90% of the participants reported having had mild/moderate COVID-19. Most participants had a history of headache before developing COVID-19 (58%), mainly migraine type (32%). ABSTRACT: Objectives: Ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) combines ceftazidime and a reversible β-lactamase inhibitor that has shown activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacterales and P. aeruginosa. Using data from the Antimicrobial Testing Leadership and Surveillance program (ATLAS), this study examined the in vitro antimicrobial activity of CAZ-AVI and other antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria collected from Chilean hospitals between 2015 and 2021. Methods: Clinical isolates of Enterobacterales and P. aeruginosa were collected from three medical centres in Chile. Blood, abdominal fluid, urine, soft tissues, and respiratory tract samples were obtained from infected patients. Minimum inhibitory concentrations using the broth microdilution method were determined for susceptibility testing, and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) breakpoints were used for interpreting the results. Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and carbapenemase genes were also detected through polymerase chain reaction. Results: A total of 2600 Enterobacterales and 836 P. aeruginosa were analysed. CAZ-AVI was the antibiotic with the highest in vitro activity against Enterobacterales (99.72%). The incidence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) was 1.5% (n = 39), and the antibiotics with the best in vitro activity were tigecycline (92.31%), CAZ-AVI (88.57%), and amikacin (79.49%). CAZ-AVI was the antibiotic with the best activity against ESBL-producing Enterobacterales (99.34%) and MDR Enterobacterales (99.31%). For KPC-producing Enterobacterales, susceptibility to amikacin was 100%, whereas susceptibility to CAZ-AVI was 91.67%. Regarding MDR and difficult-to-treat resistance P. aeruginosa, 44.83% and 38.99% were susceptible to CAZ-AVI, respectively. Conclusion: CAZ-AVI shows excellent in vitro activity against Enterobacterales in general, CRE, ESBL-producing Enterobacterales, and KPC-producing Enterobacterales. CAZ-AVI is also an option against MDR P. aeruginosa.

Abstract Biodiversity loss is extreme in amphibians. Despite ongoing conservation action, it is difficult to determine where we stand in overcoming their extinction crisis. Among the most threatened amphibians are the 131 Neotropical harlequin toads. Many of them declined since the 1980s with several considered possibly extinct. Recently, more than 30 species have been rediscovered, raising hope for a reversing trend in the amphibian extinction crisis. We use past and present data available for harlequin toads (Atelopus), to examine whether the amphibian extinction crisis is still in an emergency state. Since 2004 no species has improved its population status, suggesting that recovery efforts have not been successful. Threats include habitat change, pathogen spread and climate change. More mitigation strategies need implementation, especially habitat protection and disease management, combined with captive conservation breeding. With harlequin toads serving as a model, it is clear that the amphibian extinction crisis is still underway.

Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs), a class of soft matter materials whose properties can be tuned by the wise pairing of the cation and anion, have recently emerged as promising candidates for different applications, combining the characteristics of ionic liquids and liquid crystals. Among those potential uses, this review aims to cover chromogenic ILCs. In this context, examples of photo-, electro- and thermochromism based on ILCs are provided. Furthermore, thermotropic and lyotropic ionic liquid crystals are also summarised, including the most common chemical and phase structures, as well as the advantages of confining these materials. This manuscript also comprises the following main experimental techniques used to characterise ILCs: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Polarised Optical Microscopy (POM) and X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD). Chromogenic ILCs can be interesting smart materials for energy and health purposes.

This research proposes the utilization of Peltier modules to convert electrical energy from thermal energy to show its potential as a renewable energy source for residential and commercial application. The study, whose results are presented in this manuscript, was conducted in the city of Monterrey, located in the northeast of Mexico. The energy source was tested and analyzed utilizing a set of statistical metrics and further comparison against experimental test results. The Distrito Tec area in Monterrey city is an academic complex and it was chosen for this study, which consisted of the indirect measurement of the average annual heat energy stored within the buildings’ cement structure. The aim was to obtain the annual accumulated electrical power in Wh per year that Peltier modules could provide in Distrito Tec, which is located in a city with solar irradiation levels above the world average. The proposal in this paper could encourage further investigation regarding this energy that is currently waste heat. More specifically, the results of this research highlight the importance of thermoelectric modules and seek to motivate research to improve their properties and make them more efficient and more viable as well. Thermoelectric modules have the potential to be part of the solution to sustainable development as presented in the United Nations SDG-7—ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Prior research has demonstrated that incorporating solid waste from various sources, such as plastics, civil engineering waste, and industrial and mining waste, into pavement and civil works mixes has notable environmental benefits. This includes reducing the over-exploitation of aggregate banks and preventing waste materials from being deposited in open-pit landfills for extended periods. This review focuses on sustainable aggregates produced from solid waste with rheological or mechanical properties suitable for replacing conventional aggregates in asphalt or hydraulic concrete mixtures. The aim is to determine the optimal replacement percentage in the mixture to directly impact pavement performance. This review also delves into the impact on fatigue resistance and permanent deformation based on the type of waste material used in construction. Additionally, using sustainable aggregates presents added benefits for pavement binders, such as inhibiting reflection cracks, reducing traffic noise, and prolonging the service life of the pavement. However, it is crucial to study the percentage of replacement of sustainable aggregates in conjunction with other materials using mathematical models and simulations to ensure a substantial contribution to the sustainability of the construction industry.

This systematic literature review delves into the extensive landscape of emotion recognition, sentiment analysis, and affective computing, analyzing 609 articles. Exploring the intricate relationships among these research domains, and leveraging data from four well-established sources—IEEE, Science Direct, Springer, and MDPI—this systematic review classifies studies in four modalities based on the types of data analyzed. These modalities are unimodal, multi-physical, multi-physiological, and multi-physical–physiological. After the classification, key insights about applications, learning models, and data sources are extracted and analyzed. This review highlights the exponential growth in studies utilizing EEG signals for emotion recognition, and the potential of multimodal approaches combining physical and physiological signals to enhance the accuracy and practicality of emotion recognition systems. This comprehensive overview of research advances, emerging trends, and limitations from 2018 to 2023 underscores the importance of continued exploration and interdisciplinary collaboration in these rapidly evolving fields.

TDP-43 pathology is found in several neurodegenerative disorders, collectively referred to as “TDP-43 proteinopathies”. Aggregates of TDP-43 are present in the brains and spinal cords of >97% of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and in brains of ∼50% of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients. While mutations in the TDP-43 gene (TARDBP) are usually associated with ALS, many clinical reports have linked these mutations to cognitive impairments and/or FTD, but also to other neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinsonism (PD) or progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). TDP-43 is a ubiquitously expressed, highly conserved RNA-binding protein that is involved in many cellular processes, mainly RNA metabolism. To investigate systemic pathological mechanisms in TDP-43 proteinopathies, aiming to capture the pleiotropic effects of TDP-43 mutations, we have further characterised a mouse model carrying a point mutation (M323K) within the endogenous Tardbp gene. Homozygous mutant mice developed cognitive and behavioural deficits as early as 3 months of age. This was coupled with significant brain structural abnormalities, mainly in the cortex, hippocampus, and white matter fibres, together with progressive cortical interneuron degeneration and neuroinflammation. At the motor level, progressive phenotypes appeared around 6 months of age. Thus, cognitive phenotypes appeared to be of a developmental origin with a mild associated progressive neurodegeneration, while the motor and neuromuscular phenotypes seemed neurodegenerative, underlined by a progressive loss of upper and lower motor neurons as well as distal denervation. This is accompanied by progressive elevated TDP-43 protein and mRNA levels in cortex and spinal cord of homozygous mutant mice from 3 months of age, together with increased cytoplasmic TDP-43 mislocalisation in cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and spinal cord at 12 months of age. In conclusion, we find that Tardbp M323K homozygous mutant mice model many aspects of human TDP-43 proteinopathies, evidencing a dual role for TDP-43 in brain morphogenesis as well as in the maintenance of the motor system, making them an ideal in vivo model system to study the complex biology of TDP-43.

Antecedentes: La apendicitis aguda es un diagnóstico diferencial en el adulto mayor con dolor abdominal. La escala de Alvarado se utiliza para orientar el diagnóstico y el tratamiento. Las características operativas de la escala son poco conocidas en este grupo de pacientes. Método: Revisión sistemática de estudios originales publicados entre 1986 y 2022 que evaluaron el rendimiento diagnóstico de la escala de Alvarado en adultos mayores con sospecha de apendicitis aguda, con base en la declaración PRISMA. La evaluación de la calidad metodológica de los estudios se realizó con los criterios ROBINS-I. Resultados: Se identificaron cuatro estudios originales de diseño retrospectivo que incluyen 480 pacientes. La heterogeneidad y la baja calidad metodológica limitaron un análisis estadístico agregado (metaanálisis). El valor de la curva ROC de la escala varía entre 0.799 y 0.969. En los estudios disponibles, el valor de la curva ROC es inferior al de la escala RIPASA y similar al de la escala de Lintula. Conclusiones: La evidencia que sustenta el rendimiento diagnóstico de la escala de Alvarado en los adultos mayores es limitada. La pobre calidad de los estudios disponibles advierte sobre el uso prudente de esta herramienta en este grupo poblacional. Los hallazgos identificados ofrecen oportunidades de investigación futura.

BackgroundChagas disease (CD), caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is a global health concern with expanding geographical reach. Despite improved and accessible test methods, diagnosing CD in its various phases remains complex. The existence of clinical scenarios, including immunosuppressed patients, transplant-related CD reactivation, transfusion-associated cases, and orally transmitted acute infections, adds to the diagnostic challenge. No singular gold standard test exists for all phases, and recommendations from PAHO and the CDC advocate for the use of two serological methods for chronic CD diagnosis, while molecular methods or direct parasite detection are suggested for the acute phase. Given the complexity in the diagnostic landscape of CD, the goal of this scoping review is to characterize available diagnostic tests for CD in the clinical laboratory.MethodsA literature search in PubMed was conducted on studies related to In vitro diagnosis (IVD) in humans published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese language as of 28 August 2023, and extended backward with no predefined time frame. Studies underwent title and abstract screening, followed by full-text review. Studies included were classified based on the diagnostic method used. Test methods were grouped as serological, molecular, and other methods. Performance, availability, and regulatory status were also characterized.ResultsOut of 85 studies included in the final review, 115 different tests were identified. These tests comprised 89 serological test types, 21 molecular test types, and 5 other test methods. Predominant serological tests included ELISA (38 studies, 44.70%), Rapid tests (19 studies, 22.35%), and chemiluminescence (10 studies, 11.76%). Among molecular tests, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays were notable. Twenty-eight tests were approved globally for IVD or donor testing, all being serological methods. Molecular assays lacked approval for IVD in the United States, with only European and Colombian regulatory acceptance.Discussion and conclusionSerological tests, specifically ELISAs, remain the most used and commercially available diagnostic methods. This makes sense considering that most Chagas disease diagnoses occur in the chronic phase and that the WHO gold standard relies on 2 serological tests to establish the diagnosis of chronic Chagas. ELISAs are feasible and relatively low-cost, with good performance with sensitivities ranging between 77.4% and 100%, and with specificities ranging between 84.2% and 100%. Molecular methods allow the detection of specific variants but rely on the parasite’s presence, which limits their utility to parasitemia levels. Depending on the PCR method and the phase of the disease, the sensitivity ranged from 58.88 to 100% while the mean specificity ranged from 68.8% to 100%. Despite their performance, molecular testing remains mostly unavailable for IVD use. Only 3 molecular tests are approved for IVD, which are available only in Europe. Six commercial serological assays approved by the FDA are available for blood and organ donor screening. Currently, there are no guidelines for testing CD oral outbreaks. Although more evidence is needed on how testing methods should be used in special clinical scenarios, a comprehensive approach of clinical assessment and diagnostics tests, including not IVD methods, is required for an accurate CD diagnosis.

Abstract Background The vertical jump can be analyzed based on the flight time achieved by the individual. This measurement can be obtained using a force platform or a three-dimensional infrared camera system, but such equipment is expensive and requires training for data collection and processing. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of using a smartphone and the Kinovea software compared with a force platform as a method of vertical jump analysis. Methods For this purpose, two independent evaluators analyzed videos of bipodal and unipodal vertical jumps by counting the variables among participants. The participants performed three consecutive jumps in bipodal and unipodal conditions with the dominant and non-dominant legs. Results The intra-rater analysis for bipodal jumps was found to have excellent reproducibility (ICC = 0.903 to 0.934), whereas for unipodal jumps, the reproducibility was moderate to excellent (ICC = 0.713 to 0.902). The inter-rater analysis showed that for bipodal jumps, the reproducibility is substantial to excellent (ICC = 0.823 to 0.926), while for unipodal jumps, it is moderate (ICC = 0.554 to 0.702). Conclusions Therefore, it can be concluded that the vertical jump evaluation can be performed using the smartphone-Kinovea system. However, the same evaluator should carry out the evaluation to maintain reliable indices.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was the causative agent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. While research on COVID-19 has mainly focused on its epidemiology, pathogenesis, and treatment, studies on the naso-oropharyngeal microbiota have emerged in the last few years as an overlooked area of research. Here, we analyzed the bacterial community composition of the naso-oropharynx in 50 suspected SARS-CoV-2 cases (43 detected, 7 not detected) from Veraguas province (Panama) distributed across five age categories. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences (p < 0.05) in bacterial alpha and beta diversities between the groups categorized by SARS-CoV-2 test results, age, or patient status. The genera Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus, Prevotella, Streptococcus, and Tepidiphilus were the most abundant in both detected and not-detected SARS-CoV-2 group. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) for biomarker exploration indicated that Veillonella and Prevotella were enriched in detected and hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 relative to non-detected patients, while Thermoanaerobacterium and Haemophilus were enriched in non-detected patients with SARS-CoV-2. The results also indicated that the genus Corynebacterium was found to decrease in patients with detected SARS-CoV-2 relative to those with non-detected SARS-CoV-2. Understanding the naso-oropharyngeal microbiota provides insights into the diversity, composition, and resilience of the microbial community in patients with SARS-CoV-2.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline, is the most common form of dementia. Currently, there is no single test that can diagnose AD, especially in understudied populations and developing countries. Instead, diagnosis is based on a combination of medical history, physical examination, cognitive testing, and brain imaging. Exosomes are extracellular nanovesicles, primarily composed of RNA, that participate in physiological processes related to AD pathogenesis such as cell proliferation, immune response, and neuronal and cardiovascular function. However, the identification and understanding of the potential role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in AD diagnosis remain largely unexplored. Here, we clinically, cognitively, and genetically characterized a sample of 15 individuals diagnosed with AD (cases) and 15 controls from Barranquilla, Colombia. Advanced bioinformatics, analytics and Machine Learning (ML) techniques were used to identify lncRNAs differentially expressed between cases and controls. The expression of 28,909 lncRNAs was quantified. Of these, 18 were found to be differentially expressed and harbored in pivotal genes related to AD. Two lncRNAs, ENST00000608936 and ENST00000433747, show promise as diagnostic markers for AD, with ML models achieving > 95% sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in both the training and testing datasets. These findings suggest that the expression profiles of lncRNAs could significantly contribute to advancing personalized AD diagnosis in this community, offering promising avenues for early detection and follow-up.

Invasive fungal disease causes high morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients. Resistance to conventional antifungal drugs and the toxicity associated with high doses highlight the need for effective antifungal therapies. In this study, the antifungal potential of the ethanolic extract of Anacardium occidentale (Cashew Leaf) leaves were evaluated against Candida albicans and C. auris. The antifungal activity was tested by the broth microdilution method and growth kinetic test. To further explore its antifungal action mode, spectrofluorophotometry, confocal microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy were performed. Additionally, heterozygous knockout strains associated with resistance to oxidative stress were included in the study. We found that A. occidentale could inhibit the proliferation and growth of C. albicans at concentrations of 62.5 and 125 μg/mL. The doubling time was also drastically affected, going from 2.8 h to 22.5 h, which was also observed in C. auris. The extract induced the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, while it did not show cytotoxicity or hemolytic activity at the concentrations evaluated. Our work preliminarily elucidated the potential mechanisms of A. occidentale against C. albicans on a cellular level, and might provide a promising option for the design of a new treatment for invasive candidiasis.

Knowledge of the precise anatomy and dimensions of the pulp chambers in different teeth allows the odontologist to perform correct diagnosis, as well as treatment planning and monitoring. Clinical practice has introduced cone-beam computed tomography (CB-CT) as a method to evaluate the morphology and dimensions of the pulp chamber. Nevertheless, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is regarded as the gold standard in approaching those topics. Here, we have designed an algorithm that takes as input DICOM images from in vivo CB-CT of permanent molars to determine the accuracy of CB-CT for evaluation of pulp chamber volume. The values were compared with those from in vivo CB-CT (rough and expert-manipulated) and ex vivo micro-CT. The relative errors obtained in the volume calculated by the algorithm vs. the volume measured by micro-CT did not exceed 5.7%; additionally, no significant differences were found between algorithm volumes and manipulated CB-CT volumes, while all volumes were different from those obtained with automatic CB-CT software. These data demonstrate that this CB-CT-based volume algorithm may be a reliable technique for evaluation of the pulp chamber volume in permanent molars and can be useful in the diagnosis of pulp diseases, as well as in the planning and monitoring of their treatments.

Protein persulfidation is a thiol-based oxidative posttranslational modification (oxiPTM) that involves the modification of susceptible cysteine thiol groups present in peptides and proteins through hydrogen sulfide (H2S), thus affecting their function. Using sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruits as a model material at different stages of ripening (immature green and ripe red), endogenous persulfidated proteins (persulfidome) were labeled using the dimedone switch method and identified using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis (LC-MS/MS). A total of 891 persulfidated proteins were found in pepper fruits, either immature green or ripe red. Among these, 370 proteins were exclusively present in green pepper, 237 proteins were exclusively present in red pepper, and 284 proteins were shared between both stages of ripening. A comparative analysis of the pepper persulfidome with that described in Arabidopsis leaves allowed the identification of 25% of common proteins. Among these proteins, glutathione reductase (GR) and leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) were selected to evaluate the effect of persulfidation using an in vitro approach. GR activity was unaffected, whereas LAP activity increased by 3-fold after persulfidation. Furthermore, this effect was reverted through treatment with dithiothreitol (DTT). To our knowledge, this is the first persulfidome described in fruits, which opens new avenues to study H2S metabolism. Additionally, the results obtained lead us to hypothesize that LAP could be involved in glutathione (GSH) recycling in pepper fruits.

Current agrochemicals used in crop farming mainly consist of synthetic compounds with harmful effects on the environment and human health. Crop-associated fungal endophytes, which play many ecological roles including defense against pathogens, represent a promising source for bioactive and ecologically safer molecules in agrochemical discovery. The methanolic extract of the endophyte Menisporopsis sp. LCM 1078 was evaluated in vitro against the plant pathogens Boeremia exigua, Calonectria variabilis, Colletotrichum theobromicola, Colletotrichum tropicale, and Mycena cytricolor. Bioassay-guided isolation using chromatographic techniques followed by detailed chemical characterization by NMR and mass spectrometry led to the identification of menisporopsin A, which showed inhibitory activity in a dose-dependent manner against the five fungal pathogens including an endophytic strain (Colletotrichum tropicale), with MIC values in the range of 0.63–10.0 μg/mL showing a potency equivalent to the broadly employed agrochemical mancozeb.

OBJECTIVE: Medical nutrition therapy provides the opportunity to compensate for muscle wasting and immune response activation during stress and trauma. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the safety and effectiveness of early enteral nutrition (EEN) in adults with sepsis or septic shock. METHODS: The MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, and ICTRP tools were searched from inception until July 2023. Conference proceedings, the reference lists of included studies, and expert content were queried to identify additional publications. Two review authors completed the study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment; disagreements were resolved through discussion. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies (NRSs) comparing the administration of EEN with no or delayed enteral nutrition (DEE) in adult populations with sepsis or septic shock. RESULTS: Five RCTs (n = 442 participants) and ten NRSs (n = 3724 participants) were included. Low-certainty evidence from RCTs and NRSs suggests that patients receiving EEN could require fewer days of mechanical ventilation (MD −2.65; 95% CI, −4.44–0.86; and MD −2.94; 95% CI, −3.64–−2.23, respectively) and may show lower SOFA scores during follow-up (MD −1.64 points; 95% CI, −2.60–−0.68; and MD −1.08 points; 95% CI, −1.90–−0.26, respectively), albeit with an increased frequency of diarrhea episodes (OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.115–4.34). Even though the patients with EEN show a lower in-hospital mortality rate both in RCTs (OR 0.69; 95% CI, 0.39–1.23) and NRSs (OR 0.89; 95% CI, 0.69–1.13), this difference does not achieve statistical significance. There were no apparent differences for other outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Low-quality evidence suggests that EEN may be a safe and effective intervention for the management of critically ill patients with sepsis or septic shock.

Resumen: Introducción: La bioprótesis autoexpandible sin sutura Perceval S ofrece resultados a un año similares a las bioprótesis convencionales. No obstante, la evidencia a medio plazo aún es escasa. Objetivos: Analizar eventos cardiovasculares mayores (muerte, ictus, reintervención valvular) y el comportamiento hemodinámico a mediano plazo, en una cohorte ajustada de pacientes portadores de una prótesis Perceval S y bioprótesis convencionales. Métodos: Revisión retrospectiva de una cohorte ajustada 1:1 mediante propensity score de pacientes con sustitución valvular aórtica, con o sin revascularización miocárdica concomitante. Resultados: Se incluyeron 52 pacientes en cada grupo, sin diferencias significativas en características preoperatorias. A 3 años, no identificamos diferencias significativas en la supervivencia libre de eventos adversos cardiovasculares mayores, ni en el comportamiento hemodinámico entre bioprótesis convencionales y sin sutura. Supervivencia: 92,31% vs 92,1%; p = 0,957. Ictus: 100% vs 94,23%; p = 0,080. Reintervención valvular: 100% vs 94,81%; p = 0,200. Gradiente medio: 10,6 mmHg vs 10,7 mmHg; p = 0,875. Gradiente máximo: 20,7 mmHg vs 21,0 mmHg; p = 0,856. Fuga periprotésica moderada o severa: 0 vs 1,92%; p = 0,136. Conclusiones: A 3 años, la bioprótesis Perceval S se asocia a una supervivencia libre de eventos adversos cardiovasculares mayores, similar al de las bioprótesis convencionales. El comportamiento hemodinámico de la prótesis es similar entre ambos grupos a medio plazo. Abstract: Introduction: 1-year outcomes of the sutureless bioprosthesis Perceval S are similar to conventional bioprostheses. Nevertheless, the mid-term evidence is scarce. Objectives: Mid-term follow up analysis of major adverse cardiovascular events analysis and hemodynamic performance, after aortic valve replacement with conventional bioprostheses or the Perceval S bioprosthesis in an adjusted cohort. Methods: Retrospective analysis of a 1:1 propensity score matched cohort of patients who underwent aortic valve replacement, with or without concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting. Results: 52 patients were included in each group, with similar preoperative characteristics. At 3-year follow up, we observed no statistically significant differences in major adverse cardiovascular events nor hemodynamic performance between conventional or sutureless bioprostheses. Survival: 92,31% vs 92,1%; P = .957. Stroke: 100% vs 94,23%; P = .080. Valve reintervention: 100% vs 94,81%; P = .200. Mean gradient: 10,6 mmHg vs 10,7 mmHg; P = .875. Peak gradient: 20,7 mmHg vs 21,0 mmHg; P = .856. Moderate or severe periprosthetic leak: 0 vs 1,92%; P = .136. Conclusions: At 3 years, the Perceval S bioprosthesis presented similar outcomes in major adverse cardiovascular events and hemodynamic performance as conventional bioprosthesis.

The cold interstellar medium (ISM) as the raw material for star formation is critical to understanding galaxy evolution. It is generally understood that galaxies stop making stars when, in one way or another, they run out of gas. However, here we provide evidence that central spiral galaxies remain rich in atomic gas even if their star formation rate (SFR) and molecular gas fraction have dropped significantly compared to “normal” star-forming galaxies of the same mass. Since H i is sensitive to external processes, here we investigate central spiral galaxies using a combined sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey, and the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey. After proper incompleteness corrections, we find that the key H i scaling relations for central spirals show significant but regular systematic dependence on stellar mass. At any given stellar mass, the H i gas mass fraction is about constant with changing specific star formation rate (sSFR), which suggests that H i reservoir is ubiquitous in central spirals with any star formation status down to M _* ∼ 10 ^9 M _⊙ . Together with the tight correlation between the molecular gas mass fraction and sSFR for galaxies across a wide range of different properties, it suggests that the decline of SFR of all central spirals in the local Universe is due to the halt of H _2 supply, though there is plenty of H i gas around. These hence provide critical observations of the dramatically different behavior of the cold multiphase ISM, and a key to understand the star formation process and quenching mechanism.

Reservoirs are highly relevant infrastructure assets, and now, more than ever, they play an essential role in society’s welfare and national security. Their importance is related to regional socioeconomic development due to their capacity to store water for different uses, such as human consumption, agricultural irrigation, flood control, and hydroelectric energy production, among other important services. However, many reservoirs are reaching the end of their period of life, and others are showing undesired displacements and cracking. Four 3D surveys were conducted on a reservoir that serves the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey City in Mexico. These surveys were carried out over a period of 5 years using GNSS observation to assist in understanding the actual dam kinematics, i.e., the behavior of its longitudinal and transversal displacements and the possible correlation with the reservoir level. The high-precision leveling and close-range remote sensing data were assessed and then mapped. The high-precision geodetic and leveling techniques allowed us to locate and measure 84 established permanent control points with errors of about ± 0.003 m. The mapping of displacements was made possible by modeling the positive and negative translations. The highest uplifts (11 mm) occurred at the left riverbank, and the highest subsidences (−5 mm) occurred along the downstream piers from the middle of the dam crest to the right riverbank. A ground laser scanner (GLS) produced 3D digital models with geometrical and radiometric characteristics, detecting displacements among the dam crest elements. The synergy of GNSS and high-leveling techniques allows the possibility to measure displacements, while the use of geographical information system (GIS) and geomatic techniques allows a better visualization through 2D and 3D maps validated using traditional topographical methods.

In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

The Event Horizon Telescope observed the horizon-scale synchrotron emission region around the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in 2017. These observations revealed a bright, thick ring morphology with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μ as and modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry, consistent with the expected appearance of a black hole with mass M ≈ 4 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ . From these observations, we present the first resolved linear and circular polarimetric images of Sgr A*. The linear polarization images demonstrate that the emission ring is highly polarized, exhibiting a prominent spiral electric vector polarization angle pattern with a peak fractional polarization of ∼40% in the western portion of the ring. The circular polarization images feature a modestly (∼5%–10%) polarized dipole structure along the emission ring, with negative circular polarization in the western region and positive circular polarization in the eastern region, although our methods exhibit stronger disagreement than for linear polarization. We analyze the data using multiple independent imaging and modeling methods, each of which is validated using a standardized suite of synthetic data sets. While the detailed spatial distribution of the linear polarization along the ring remains uncertain owing to the intrinsic variability of the source, the spiraling polarization structure is robust to methodological choices. The degree and orientation of the linear polarization provide stringent constraints for the black hole and its surrounding magnetic fields, which we discuss in an accompanying publication.

The submarine outfall of Mar del Plata city at Camet was projected considering the mean and maximum of forecasted sewage discharges, the inner-shelf depth, coliform concentration and its decay (T90) mainly induced by sunlight effect and costal salinity. In 2016 the outfall was operating with a length of 3,810 m and diffusers in the last 526 m. An economical method to monitor its performance in relation to the surroundings, is remote-sensing techniques, applying either visible or radar images. Tidal currents parallel to the coast are responsible for the transport of the sedimentary plume in the far field, after a primary dilution from a depth of 11 m. Visible images (1.5 to 6 m spatial resolution) are effective in monitoring the plume entrained in the upper portion of the water column. These analyses led to study the interaction between waves and coastal currents. Radar images (30 m resolution X and C bands) permit to survey the slick-alike plume that differs from the environment water by the surface roughness. Comparing both techniques visible images can distinguish the different colours of the plume; instead, the radar images are showing the surface roughness from the slick-alike plume. The main advantage of active sensors is that they can map the plume during a cloudy weather and even during night time.

Abstract Background Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a FDA approved therapy regularly used to treat a variety of neurological disorders that impact the central nervous system (CNS) including epilepsy and stroke. Putatively, the therapeutic efficacy of VNS results from its action on neuromodulatory centers via projections of the vagus nerve to the solitary tract nucleus. Currently, there is not an established large animal model that facilitates detailed mechanistic studies exploring how VNS impacts the function of the CNS, especially during complex behaviors requiring motor action and decision making. Methods We describe the anatomical organization, surgical methodology to implant VNS electrodes on the left gagus nerve and characterization of target engagement/neural interface properties in a non-human primate (NHP) model of VNS that permits chronic stimulation over long periods of time. Furthermore, we describe the results of pilot experiments in a small number of NHPs to demonstrate how this preparation might be used in an animal model capable of performing complex motor and decision making tasks. Results VNS electrode impedance remained constant over months suggesting a stable interface. VNS elicited robust activation of the vagus nerve which resulted in decreases of respiration rate and/or partial pressure of carbon dioxide in expired air, but not changes in heart rate in both awake and anesthetized NHPs. Conclusions We anticipate that this preparation will be very useful to study the mechanisms underlying the effects of VNS for the treatment of conditions such as epilepsy and depression, for which VNS is extensively used, as well as for the study of the neurobiological basis underlying higher order functions such as learning and memory.

Resumen: Introducción y objetivos: Analizar la evolución reciente del perfil de riesgo, la mortalidad y la actividad asistencial de la cirugía coronaria en España. Métodos: Se analizaron todos los episodios con códigos de procedimiento de cirugía aislada de revascularización coronaria del conjunto mínimo básico de datos en 2001-2020. El periodo de estudio se dividió en 4 etapas: 2001-2005, 2006-2010, 2011-2015 y 2016-2020. Se analizaron los cambios del volumen de actividad y los factores relacionados con la mortalidad hospitalaria mediante análisis de tendencia lineal y modelos multivariables de regresión logística. Resultados: Se incluyeron 96.073 episodios de donde se realizó una cirugía coronaria aislada. Se observó una reducción del volumen anual de cirugías de 6.134 en 2001 a 3.421 en 2020, y un aumento de la ratio intervencionismo coronario/cirugía de 2,4 a 8. Abstract Searching for new bioactive molecules to design insecticides is a complex process since pesticides should be highly selective, active against the vector, and bio-safe for humans. Aiming to find natural compounds for mosquito control, we evaluated the insecticidal activity of essential oils (EOs) from 20 American native plants against Aedes aegypti larvae using bioassay, biochemical, and in silico analyses. The highest larvicide activity was exhibited by EOs from Steiractinia aspera (LC50 = 42.4 µg/mL), Turnera diffusa (LC50 = 70.9 µg/mL), Piper aduncum (LC50 = 55.8 µg/mL), Lippia origanoides (chemotype thymol/carvacrol) (LC50 = 61.9 µg/mL), L. origanoides (chemotype carvacrol/thymol) (LC50 = 59.8 µg/mL), Hyptis dilatata (LC50 = 61.1 µg/mL), Elaphandra quinquenervis (LC50 = 61.1 µg/mL), and Calycolpus moritzianus (LC50 = 73.29 µg/mL) after 24 h. This biological activity may be related to the disruption of the electron transport chain through the mitochondrial protein complexes. We hypothesized that the observed EOs' effect is due to their major components, where computational approaches such as homology modeling and molecular docking may suggest the possible binding pose of secondary metabolites that inhibit the mitochondrial enzymes and acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE). Our results provided insights into the possible mechanism of action of EOs and their major compounds for new insecticide designs targeting the mitochondria and AChE activity in A. aegypti for effective and safe insecticide.

Abstract This study was designed to test the hypothesis that in addition to repairing the architectural and cellular cues via regenerative medicine, the delivery of immune cues (immunotherapy) may be needed to enhance regeneration following volumetric muscle loss (VML) injury. We identified IL-10 signaling as a promising immunotherapeutic target. To explore the impact of targeting IL-10 signaling, tibialis anterior (TA) VML injuries were created and then treated in rats using autologous minced muscle (MM). Animals received either recombinant rat IL-10 or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) controls injections at the site of VML repair beginning 7 days post injury (DPI) and continuing every other day (4 injections total) until 14 DPI. At 56 DPI (study endpoint), significant improvements to TA contractile torque (82% of uninjured values & 170% of PBS values), TA mass, and myofiber size in response to IL-10 treatment were detected. Whole transcriptome analysis at 14 DPI revealed activation of IL-10 signaling, muscle hypertrophy, and lymphocytes signaling pathways. Expression of ST2, a regulatory T (Treg) cell receptor, was dramatically increased at the VML repair site in response to IL-10 treatment when compared to PBS controls. The findings suggest that the positive effect of delayed IL-10 delivery might be due to immuno-suppressive Treg cell recruitment.

Objetivo: Establecer el valor pronóstico del TRNSC basado en la necesidad de marcapasos en pacientes diagnosticados con aleteo atrial, pos-ablación. Métodos: Este cohorte prospectivo, realizado en el Instituto Nacional de Cardiología “Ignacio Chávez” en la Ciudad de México, evaluó pacientes sometidos a ablación para corregir el aleteo atrial; se midió el TRNSC post bloqueo autonómico. Resultados: La muestra de 40 pacientes se subdividió en 2 grupos según su requerimiento de marcapasos posterior a la ablación (P y NP). Se diagnosticó disfunción del nodo sinusal en 13 participantes (32.5%), de los cuales 10 (71.43%) requirieron marcapasos en comparación a 4 (28.57%) con función normal. En el grupo P la pausa del nodo sinusal post-ablación tuvo una media de 1.86 ± 0.96 s versus el grupo NP con 1.196 ± 0.52 s. En relación con el TRNSC, el grupo NP tuvo una media de 383.54 ± 67.96 ms vs. 1972.57 ± 3423.56 ms en el grupo P. 10 pacientes (25%) obtuvieron un TRNSC > 500 ms, de los cuales 100% requirieron marcapasos; de los 14 pacientes que requirieron marcapasos 10 (71.43%) tenían un TRNSC elevado (p ≤ 0.01). Conclusiones: El TRNSC tiene el potencial de ser una herramienta de pronóstico cuantitativo para la necesidad de futuros implantes de marcapasos en pacientes con disfunción del nodo sinusal, resultado de aleteo atrial pos-ablación. Esto podría ayudar a diagnosticar más temprano una disfunción del nodo sinusal, resultando en la reducción de la pérdida a largo plazo de la función cardíaca como efecto de la remodelación.
