Abstract Accurately predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is vital for improving battery performance and safety in applications such as consumer electronics and electric vehicles. While the prediction of RUL for these batteries is a well-established field, the current research refines RUL prediction methodologies by leveraging deep learning techniques, advancing prediction accuracy. This study proposes AccuCell Prodigy, a deep learning model that integrates auto-encoders and long short-term memory (LSTM) layers to enhance RUL prediction accuracy and efficiency. The model’s name reflects its precision (“AccuCell”) and predictive strength (“Prodigy”). The proposed methodology involves preparing a dataset of battery operational features, split using an 80–20 ratio for training and testing. Leveraging 22 variations of current (critical parameter) across three Li-ion cells, AccuCell Prodigy significantly reduces prediction errors, achieving a mean square error of 0.1305%, mean absolute error of 2.484%, and root mean square error of 3.613%, with a high R-squared value of 0.9849. These results highlight its robustness and potential for advancing battery health management.

Abstract NASH is characterized by hepatic lipid accumulation and inflammation; and JMJD2B—a histone demethylase—upregulation has been linked to its progression. Pirfenidone (PFD) is an antifibrotic agent with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects recognized to decrease NASH symptoms. Herein, our aim was to investigate PFD-induced epigenetics mechanisms involving JMJD2B and histone modifications in experimental NASH. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed with normo-diet, or high fat/carbohydrate diet (HF) for 16 weeks. A HF-subgroup was treated with PFD 300 mg/kg/d from week 8th to the end of protocol. Insulin tolerance test and liver and fat histological and biochemical analyses were carried out. Hepatic transcriptome was examined. Liver proteins were studied by western blot (WB) and Chromatin immunoprecipitation. In vitro, lipotoxicity was induced in HepG2 cells and proteins were evaluated using WB. Molecular docking was used to explore binding of PFD to JMJD2B. Mice treated with PFD reduced weight gain, epididymal fat and inflammatory nodules, and steatosis in liver tissue, as well as, improved biochemical test. PFD modified the expression of Jmjd2b, Pparg, Fasn and Srebp1, and restored JMJD2B protein and H3K9me3 repressive mark, both in animal and cell models. PFD increased hepatic enrichment of H3K9me2 and H3K9me3 at the promoter region of Fasn and Srebp1, and Pparg. In HepG2 cells, PFD reduced lipid vacuole accumulation. In silico, PFD interacted with JMJD2B catalytic site. PFD is an epigenetic regulator modifying JMJD2B activity, resulting in reduced NASH traits.

Community centers play a crucial role in urban environments, providing physical and educational services to their surrounding communities, particularly for students. Among the many benefits for students are enhanced academic outcomes, improvement of behavioral problems, and increased school attendance. Such centers are also particularly vital for low-income and racial minority students as they are pivotal in giving them outside-of-school learning opportunities. However, determinants influencing attendance at community centers remain largely unexplored. The novelty of our research comes from using census data, Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) attendance data, and specific center attributes, to develop human mobility gravitational models that have been used, for the first time, to predict attendance across the BCYF network. Using those models, we simulated the potential effects on general and student attendance by changing center attributes, such as facilities and operating hours. We also researched the impact of changing the walking accessibility to those centers on their respective attendance patterns. After the analysis, we found that the most cost-effective policy to increase BCYF attendance is changing each center’s educational and recreational offerings far beyond any accessibility interventions. Our results provide insights into potential policy changes that could optimize the attendance and reach of BCYF Community Centers to under-served populations.

Abstract Emergency medical services (EMSs) face critical situations that require patient risk classification based on analytical and vital signs. We aimed to establish clustering-derived phenotypes based on prehospital analytical and vital signs that allow risk stratification. This was a prospective, multicenter, EMS-delivered, ambulance-based cohort study considering six advanced life support units, 38 basic life support units, and four tertiary hospitals in Spain. Adults with unselected acute diseases managed by the EMS and evacuated with discharge priority to emergency departments were considered between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2023. Prehospital point-of-care testing and on-scene vital signs were used for the unsupervised machine learning method (clustering) to determine the phenotypes. Then phenotypes were compared with the primary outcome (cumulative mortality (all-cause) at 2, 7, and 30 days). A total of 7909 patients were included. The median (IQR) age was 64 (51–80) years, 41% were women, and 26% were living in rural areas. Three clusters were identified: alpha 16.2% (1281 patients), beta 28.8% (2279), and gamma 55% (4349). The mortality rates for alpha, beta and gamma at 2 days were 18.6%, 4.1%, and 0.8%, respectively; at 7 days, were 24.7%, 6.2%, and 1.7%; and at 30 days, were 33%, 10.2%, and 3.2%, respectively. Based on standard vital signs and blood test biomarkers in the prehospital scenario, three clusters were identified: alpha (high-risk), beta and gamma (medium- and low-risk, respectively). This permits the EMS system to quickly identify patients who are potentially compromised and to proactively implement the necessary interventions.

La Universidad de El Salvador fue fundada el 16 de febrero de 1841, fecha que coincide con la declaración del Estado salvadoreño. Desde su constitución, el Alma Máter ha resistido los vendavales históricos del país, manteniéndose siempre como la primera y única universidad pública, comprometida con la ciencia y la cultura. Además, sus fines atienden a la urgencia de transformar a la sociedad salvadoreña por medio de la docencia, la investigación y la proyección social. Al unir estos tres ejes, la Universidad de El Salvador impulsa su quehacer y producción científica, en aras de entregar al pueblo hombres y mujeres con un espíritu renovador de su realidad y un enfoque humanista del conocimiento.

El margen occidental mexicano se ha caracterizado por la instalación episódica de sistemas de subducción, como el que ocurrió en el periodo cretácico superior-cenozoico. Estos sistemas dieron lugar a actividad volcánica principalmente intermedia a ácida en el NW de México (por ejemplo, la provincia ignimbrítica de la Sierra Madre Occidental). Sin embargo, el análisis de una base de datos geoquímicos (elementos mayores y traza) para vulcanismo félsico (SiO2 ajustado, x ≥ 62 %) expuesto en el estado de Chihuahua durante el periodo del Eoceno tardío-Oligoceno ha revelado la existencia de litologías con una afinidad a ambientes de extensión, que representan el mayor porcentaje (68 %) de las muestras obtenidas en esta base de datos. Este vulcanismo podría representar una continuación de la actividad asociada al rift del Río Grande del SW de EUA.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become one of the most familiar names creating a benchmark and scaling new heights. IoT an indeed future of the communication that has transformed the objects (things) of the real world into smarter devices. With the advent of IoT technology, this decade is witnessing a transformation from traditional agriculture approaches to the most advanced ones. Limited research has been carried out in this direction. Thus, herein we present various technological aspects involved in IoT-based cultivation. The role and the key components of smart farming using IoT were examined, with a focus on network technologies, including layers, protocols, topologies, network architecture, etc. We also delve into the integration of relevant technologies such as cloud computing, big data analytics, and the integration of IoT-based cultivation. We explored various security issues in modern IoT cultivation and also emphasized the importance of safeguarding sensitive agricultural data. Additionally, a comprehensive list of applications based on sensors and mobile devices is provided, offering refined solutions for greenhouse management. The principles and regulations established by different countries for IoT-based cultivation systems are presented, demonstrating the global recognition of these technologies. Furthermore, a selection of successful use cases and real-world scenarios and applications were presented. Finally, the open research challenges and solutions in modern IoT-based cultivation were discussed.

El Carnaval de Cádiz es un fenómeno cultural que ha evolucionado a lo largo de su historia, adaptándose a las circunstancias políticas y sociales de cada época. Así, ha pasado de ser una forma de protesta y resistencia -y en ocasiones subversiva para las clases dirigentes- a consolidarse como una manifestación artística y popular. Numerosas investigaciones han destacado el papel del carnaval gaditano como fuente de información, opinión y contrapoder, al reflejar en sus creaciones la realidad cultural, social y política del momento. Esta función crítica y vigilante de los valores de la sociedad, aunque quizás no fuera intencionada, ha favorecido el uso de los contenidos carnavalescos como recurso didáctico en la enseñanza, por ejemplo y como aborda este trabajo académico, de la Historia.

This work presents a groundbreaking approach with a fusion of the Internet of Sensing Things (IoST) and Robotics. This system utilizes four flex sensors strategically placed on the most flexible fingers across both hands to control a Six-DoF robotic arm, offering a novel interface for those with limited mobility. This system can also be used for moving toxic objects. The Raspberry Pi is the central control unit that acquires data from the flex sensors and controls the servo motors. Moreover, the device incorporates machine learning to learn the daily movements of the users and predict abnormal finger movements. Multiple data analyses and visualizations are initiated to predict the normal and abnormal data. GMMs or Gaussian Mixture Models showed successful results among various abnormality detection processes. This amalgamation of flexible sensing and mathematical modeling offers precision and adaptability in control mechanisms.

La Isla San Pedro Nolasco (ISPN) corresponde a un bloque rocoso exhumado y delimitado por dos fallas dextrales, que se localizan en el margen oriental del límite de placas Pacífico-Norte América en el Golfo de California (GC). La ISPN está compuesta solo por rocas intrusivas del Mioceno tardío, que se caracterizan por ocurrir como un cuerpo granitoide-dioritoide, intrusionado por un enjambre de inyecciones hipovolcánicas, que varían en su composición de félsica a intermedia. En este trabajo se utilizaron imágenes satelitales, un Sistema de Información Geográfica y un trabajo de campo para la elaboración del primer mapa geológico semidetallado de la ISPN. La cartografía geológica permitió definir la distribución de las unidades litológicas que la componen, así como identificar las principales estructurales geológicas que la afectan. Finalmente, el presente trabajo pone en realce su historia geológica, como un cuerpo rocoso único en su tipo a lo largo del GC.

Raspberry has acquired great interest in human health due to its content of bioactive compounds that provide protection against diseases caused by non-communicable diseases. Bioactive compounds are mainly represented by secondary metabolites such as phenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids. Biostimulants and elicitors are substances or microorganisms that provide protection and defence to the physiological processes of plants. The present study evaluated the effect of two elicitors (hydrogen peroxide, salicylic acid) and three biostimulants (humic and fulvic acids, glutamic acid, seaweed extracts) on the content of bioactive compounds in raspberry fruits, agronomic and fruit yield parameters in plants. Hydrogen peroxide increased the content of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, omega 3 and oleic acid. Salicylic acid increased the content of flavonoids, anthocyanins, and citric acid in raspberry fruits; the number of fruit loaders and fruits per plant was also increased. Humic and fulvic acids, glutamic acid, and glutamic acid combined with seaweed extracts increased the content of flavonoids and anthocyanins, without affecting growth parameters and fruit yield. Glutamic acid and seaweed extracts were the only treatments that increased the content of palmitic acid, while seaweed extracts increased °Brix content in fruits.

IntroductionWe conducted a study to determine the prevalence of structural heart disease in patients with CF, the characteristics of a cardiomyopathy not previously described in this population, and its possible relationship with nutritional deficiencies in CF.MethodsWe studied 3 CMP CF patients referred for heart-lung transplantation and a prospective series of 120 adult CF patients. All patients underwent a clinical examination, blood tests including levels of vitamins and trace elements, and echocardiography with evaluation of myocardial strain. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) was performed in patients with CMP and in a control group. Histopathological study was performed on hearts obtained in transplant or necropsy.ResultsWe found a prevalence of 10% (CI 4.6%–15.4%) of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in the prospective cohort. Myocardial strain parameters were already altered in CF patients with otherwise normal hearts. Histopathological examination of 4 hearts from CF CMP patients showed a unique histological pattern of multifocal myocardial fibrosis similar to Keshan disease. This study explores the Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) treatment of lignocellulosic biomass blends, delving into the influence of several key parameters: temperature, additive nature and dosage, residence time, and biomass composition. Rapeseeds, Pinus radiata sawdust, oat husks, and pressed olive served as the studied biomasses. One hundred twenty-eight experiments were conducted to assess the effects on mass yield (MY), energy yield (EY), higher heating value (HHV), and final ash content (ASH) by a Factorial Experimental Design. The derived model equations demonstrated a robust fit to the experimental data, averaging an R2 exceeding 0.94, affirming their predictive accuracy. The observed energy yield ranged between 65% and 80%, notably with sawdust and olive blends securing EY levels surpassing 70%, while rapeseed blends exhibited the highest HHV at 25 MJ/kg. Temperature emerged as the most influential factor, resulting in an 11% decrease in MY and a substantial 2.20 MJ/kg increase in HHV. Contrastingly, blend composition and additive presence significantly impacted ASH and EY, with all blends exhibiting increased ASH in the presence of additives. Higher initial hemicellulose and aqueous extractive content in raw biomass correlated proportionally with heightened HHV.

The stringent response exerted by (p)ppGpp and RNA-polymerase binding protein DksA regulates gene expression in diverse bacterial species. To control gene expression (p)ppGpp, synthesized by enzymes RelA and SpoT, interacts with two sites within the RNA polymerase; site 1, located in the interphase between subunits β' and ω (rpoZ), and site 2 located in the secondary channel that is dependent on DksA protein. In Escherichia coli, inactivation of dksA results in a reduced sigma factor RpoS expression. In Azotobacter vinelandii the synthesis of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is under RpoS regulation. In this study, we found that the inactivation of relA or dksA, but not rpoZ, resulted in a negative effect on PHB synthesis. We also found that the dksA, but not the relA mutation reduced both rpoS transcription and RpoS protein levels, implying that (p)ppGpp and DksA control PHB synthesis through different mechanisms. Interestingly, despite expressing rpoS from a constitutive promoter in the dksA mutant, PHB synthesis was not restored to wild type levels. A transcriptomic analysis in the dksA mutant, revealed downregulation of genes encoding enzymes needed for the synthesis of acetyl-CoA, the precursor substrate for PHB synthesis. Together, these data indicate that DksA is required for optimal expression of RpoS which in turn activates transcription of genes for PHB synthesis. Additionally, DksA is required for optimal transcription of genes responsible for the synthesis of precursors for PHB synthesis.

Jellyfish are economically important organisms in diverse countries, carnivorous organisms that consume various prey (crustaceans, mollusks, bivalves, etc.) and dissolved carbohydrates in marine waters. This study was focused on detecting and quantifying the activity of digestive glycosidases from the cannonball jellyfish (Stomolophus sp. 2) to understand carbohydrate digestion and its temporal-spatial variation. Twenty-three jellyfish gastric pouches were collected in 2015 and 2016 in the Gulf of California in three localities (Las Guásimas, Hermosillo, and Caborca). Nine samples were in intra-localities from Las Guásimas. Chitinase (Ch), β-glucosidase (β-glu), and β-N-acetylhexosaminidase (β-NAHA) were detected in the gastric pouches. However, cellulase, exoglucanase, α-amylase, polygalacturonase, xylanase, and κ-carrageenase were undetected. Detected enzymes showed halotolerant glycolytic activity (i = 0–4 M NaCl), optimal pH, and temperature at 5.0 and 30–50 °C, respectively. At least five β-glucosidase and two β-N-acetylhexosaminidase were detected using zymograms; however, the number of proteins with chitinase activity is not precise. The annual variation of cannonball jellyfish digestive glycosidases from Las Guásimas between 2015–2016 does not show significant differences despite the difference in phytoplankton measured as chlorophyll α (1.9 and 3.4 mg/m3, respectively). In the inter-localities, the glycosidase activity was statistically different in all localities, except for β-N-acetylhexosaminidase activity between Caborca and Hermosillo (3,009.08 ± 87.95 and 3,101.81 ± 281.11 mU/g of the gastric pouch, respectively), with chlorophyll α concentrations of 2.6, 3.4 mg/m3, respectively. For intra-localities, the glycosidase activity did not show significant differences, with a mean chlorophyll α of 1.3 ± 0.1 mg/m3. These results suggest that digestive glycosidases from Stomolophus sp. 2 can hydrolyze several carbohydrates that may belong to their prey or carbohydrates dissolved in marine waters, with salinity over ≥ 0.6 M NaCl and diverse temperature (4–80 °C) conditions. Also, chlorophyll α is related to glycosidase activity in both seasons and inter-localities, except for chitinase activity in an intra-locality (Las Guásimas).

La transformación tecnológica que ha experimentado la sociedad ha generado un incremento de los ciberataques a nivel mundial, poniendo en riesgo a todos los sectores sociales y productivos de la sociedad que hacen uso de las tecnologías de la información, entre ellos el sector eléctrico, donde se utilizan con frecuencia sistemas de Control Supervisorio y Adquisición de Datos (SCADA). En Ecuador, el sector eléctrico es considerado un sector estratégico para el desarrollo del país y es administrado por la Corporación Nacional de Electricidad (CNEL EP). En este trabajo se evalúa la seguridad en el área SCADA de CNEL EP en la Unidad de Negocio Manabí aplicando el Manual de Metodología de Pruebas de Seguridad de Código Abierto (OSSTMM) y utilizando el simulador OPNET. Se seleccionaron las subestaciones más importantes pertenecientes al área SCADA y se realizó una auditoría de acuerdo a la metodología para determinar el estado actual de la seguridad e identificar posibles vulnerabilidades. A su vez, con las vulnerabilidades identificadas, se diseñaron dos escenarios simulados de forma simplificada utilizando la herramienta OPNET para establecer el impacto de la explotación de una de estas vulnerabilidades en el funcionamiento de los servicios del área SCADA. Tras la obtención de los resultados, se concluyó que el nivel de seguridad del área SCADA es alto, aunque se identificó la existencia de interacciones no controladas en las operaciones que es necesario abordar, dado que según los resultados obtenidos, la explotación de estas interacciones podría afectar significativamente al funcionamiento del área SCADA.

Microbial community control is crucial for maintaining homeostasis of the gut–liver axis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Here, we show that supplementation with a mixture of Mexican foodstuffs (MexMix)—Opuntia ficus indica (nopal), Theobroma cacao (cocoa) and Acheta domesticus (crickets)—enriches several beneficial taxa in MASLD mice and overweight/obese humans. Thus, MexMix induces an important prebiotic effect. In mice, a restoration of intestinal health was observed due to the increased short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and intestinal crypt depth, Ocln and Cldn1 expression, and decreased Il6 and Tnfa expression. MexMix significantly reduced steatosis in the mice’s liver and modified the expression of 1668 genes. By PCR, we corroborated a Tnfa and Pparg decrease, and a Cat and Sod increase. In addition, MexMix increased the hepatic NRF2 nuclear translocation and miRNA-34a, miRNA-103, and miRNA-33 decline. In overweight/obese humans, MexMix improved the body image satisfaction and reduced the fat intake. These findings indicate that this new food formulation has potential as a therapeutic approach to treat conditions associated with excessive consumption of fats and sugars.

Recent advancements in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication have notably improved existing transport systems by enabling increased connectivity and driving autonomy levels. The remarkable benefits of V2X connectivity come inadvertently with challenges which involve security vulnerabilities and breaches. Addressing security concerns is essential for seamless and safe operation of mission-critical V2X use cases. This paper surveys current literature on V2X security and provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the most relevant security enhancements to date. An in-depth classification of V2X attacks is first performed according to key security and privacy requirements. Our methodology resumes with a taxonomy of security mechanisms based on their proactive/reactive defensive approach, which helps identify strengths and limitations of state-of-the-art countermeasures for V2X attacks. In addition, this paper delves into the potential of emerging security approaches leveraging artificial intelligence tools to meet security objectives. Promising data-driven solutions tailored to tackle security, privacy and trust issues are thoroughly discussed along with new threat vectors introduced inevitably by these enablers. The lessons learned from the detailed review of existing works are also compiled and highlighted. We conclude this survey with a structured synthesis of open challenges and future research directions to foster contributions in this prominent field.

Los ODS y la Agenda 2030 adoptados por el gobierno de Costa Rica nos exigen considerar tanto barreras arquitectónicas como la posible expulsión educativa que conllevan. Dentro de la poca literatura publicada respecto de barreras arquitectónicas en universidades no se considera su análisis en laboratorios de química. Por esto, decidimos analizar las barreas físicas presentes en los laboratorios 107 y 112 de la Escuela de Química de la Universidad de Costa Rica, donde se imparten múltiples cursos de química general (introductoria) para carreras en el área de salud, ciencias básicas e ingenierías de dicha institución. El análisis enfoca las funcionalidades: didáctica, ergonómica y en emergencias, vinculadas con las barreras arquitectónicas detectadas y su posible expulsión educativa de personas con diversidad funcional, demostrando ser un condicionante de la educación inclusiva desde la institucionalidad. Se recomienda considerarlas al retomar la presencialidad en este año 2022, según lo establecido por la Rectoría de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Se encontró que las mayores limitantes arquitectónicas se dan para personas usuarias de silla de ruedas o baja estatura, debido a la altura de mesas y mecanismos de activación de dispositivos de seguridad. Finalmente, este análisis puede realizarse y aplicarse en otros laboratorios institucionales.

Resumen La accesibilidad, velocidad y conectividad global han modificado la noción del tiempo y la manera en cómo percibimos el espacio, generando un seísmo en las relaciones internacionales y las políticas entre los Estados, impactando directamente las fronteras internacionales. Este proceso se ha logrado principalmente por la implementación de redes de infraestructura de conectividad, las cuales, por su vocación integradora y administradora del territorio, han logrado vencer límites fronterizos conflictivos que la política ha dibujado en la historia. El impacto de las infraestructuras de conectividad sobre territorios transfronterizos ha sido determinante, pues trascienden desde la escala global hasta la escala urbana. Este artículo valora la capacidad funcional y operativa que poseen las infraestructuras para reconectar sistemas territoriales separados; aplicadas como una herramienta efectiva para impulsar y materializar programas de cooperación transfronteriza, gestando espacios inéditos de encuentro e intercambio económico, sociocultural, político y natural. Se analizan tres casos de infraestructuras que intervienen franjas transfronterizas en la Unión Europea (U.E.), extrayendo sus mecanismos y criterios de gestión tanto físicas -espaciales- como virtuales -regulatorios-. Cada caso representa una escala de impacto territorial distinta, con métodos de gestión integral, mecanismos innovadores de planificación y herramientas regulatorias conjuntas, los cuales son relevantes para reinterpretarlos y contextualizarlos en otros escenarios internacionales de fronteras conflictivas. Abstract Accessibility, speed, and global connectivity have modified the notion of time and the way we perceive space, generating an extreme shift in international relations and policies between States, directly impacting international borders. This process has been achieved mainly through the implementation of connective infrastructure, which has managed to overcome confiictive borders drawn by politics throughout history, due to their integrative and administrative function. The impact of connective infrastructures on cross-border territories has been decisive, ranging from the global to the urban scale. This article evaluates the functional and operational capacity of infrastructures to reconnect separate territorial systems, applied as an effective tool to encourage and materialize transnational cooperative programs, thus creating distinct and unprecedented spaces for economic, sociocultural, and political encounters and exchanges. Three cases of infrastructure that intertwine border strips in the European Union (E.U.) are analyzed, extracting their mechanisms and management criteria, both physical (spatial) and virtual (regulatory). Each case represents a different scale of territorial impact, with integrated management methods, innovative planning mechanisms and joint regulatory tools, which are relevant to reinterpret and contextualize in the context of other international scenarios of confiicting borders

Este artículo valora la capacidad funcional y operativa que poseen las infraestructuras para reconectar sistemas territoriales separados; aplicadas como una herramienta efectiva para impulsar y materializar programas de cooperación transfronteriza, gestando espacios inéditos de encuentro e intercambio económico, sociocultural, político y natural. Se analizan tres casos de infraestructuras que intervienen franjas transfronterizas en la Unión Europea (U.E.), extrayendo sus mecanismos y criterios de gestión tanto físicas -espaciales- como virtuales -regulatorios-. Cada caso representa una escala de impacto territorial distinta, con métodos de gestión integral, mecanismos innovadores de planificación y herramientas regulatorias conjuntas, los cuales son relevantes para reinterpretarlos y contextualizarlos en otros escenarios internacionales de fronteras conflictivas. Abstract Accessibility, speed, and global connectivity have modified the notion of time and the way we perceive space, generating an extreme shift in international relations and policies between States, directly impacting international borders. This process has been achieved mainly through the implementation of connective infrastructure, which has managed to overcome confiictive borders drawn by politics throughout history, due to their integrative and administrative function. The impact of connective infrastructures on cross-border territories has been decisive, ranging from the global to the urban scale. This article evaluates the functional and operational capacity of infrastructures to reconnect separate territorial systems, applied as an effective tool to encourage and materialize transnational cooperative programs, thus creating distinct and unprecedented spaces for economic, sociocultural, and political encounters and exchanges. Three cases of infrastructure that intertwine border strips in the European Union (E.U.) are analyzed, extracting their mechanisms and management criteria, both physical (spatial) and virtual (regulatory). Each case represents a different scale of territorial impact, with integrated management methods, innovative planning mechanisms and joint regulatory tools, which are relevant to reinterpret and contextualize in the context of other international scenarios of confiicting borders

Este ensayo es un intento por incluir saberes epistémicos y etimológicos producidos desde el pensamiento de las vanguardias feministas y de la teoría cuir, que tradicionalmente han sido excluidos de la corriente de pensamiento hegemónico. La historia de la construcción del Estado-nación y la institucionalidad se ha narrado, de manera favorable, desde una perspectiva del privilegio blanqueado, heterosexualizado y capitalista, lo que excluye e invisibiliza otras formas de producción de pensamiento contestatarias a las tradicionales.

IntroductionBooster doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines improve seroconversion rates in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) but the impact of homologous and heterologous booster doses in neutralizing antibody (NAb) titers and their ability to interfere with the variant of concern Omicron are not well studied.MethodsWe designed a prospective, open-label, observational clinical cohort study. 45 participants received two doses of BNT162b2 or CoronaVac (21-day or 28-day intervals, respectively) followed by a first and second booster with BNT162b2 (5-month apart each) and we analyzed the neutralizing antibody titers against SARSCoV-2 D614G (B.1 lineage) and Omicron (BA.1 lineage).ResultsOur results show that SOTRs receiving an initial two-dose scheme of CoronaVac or BNT162b2 generate lower NAbs titers against the ancestral variant of SARS-CoV-2 when compared with healthy controls. Although these NAb titers were further decreased against the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron, a single BNT162b2 booster in both groups was sufficient to increase NAb titers against the variant of concern. More importantly, this effect was only observed in those participants responding to the first two shots but not in those not responding to the initial vaccination scheme.DiscussionThe data provided here demonstrate the importance of monitoring antibody responses in immunocompromised subjects when planning booster vaccination programs in this risk group.

A novel approach is presented in this study for the classification of lower limb disorders, with a specific emphasis on the knee, hip, and ankle. The research employs gait analysis and the extraction of PoseNet features from video data in order to effectively identify and categorize these disorders. The PoseNet algorithm facilitates the extraction of key body joint movements and positions from videos in a non-invasive and user-friendly manner, thereby offering a comprehensive representation of lower limb movements. The features that are extracted are subsequently standardized and employed as inputs for a range of machine learning algorithms, such as Random Forest, Extra Tree Classifier, Multilayer Perceptron, Artificial Neural Networks, and Convolutional Neural Networks. The models undergo training and testing processes using a dataset consisting of 174 real patients and normal individuals collected at the Tehsil Headquarter Hospital Sadiq Abad. The evaluation of their performance is conducted through the utilization of K-fold cross-validation. The findings exhibit a notable level of accuracy and precision in the classification of various lower limb disorders. Notably, the Artificial Neural Networks model achieves the highest accuracy rate of 98.84%. The proposed methodology exhibits potential in enhancing the diagnosis and treatment planning of lower limb disorders. It presents a non-invasive and efficient method of analyzing gait patterns and identifying particular conditions.

Cryptorchidism (CO) is a risk factor for the development of testicular germ-cell tumors (TGCT). This is supported by reports showing the persistence of gonocytes in CO patients. These cells are proposed to be related to the development of germ-cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS), which is considered the precursor stage/lesion of TGCT. Therefore, it is proposed that some patients with CO could express some molecular markers related to TGCT. In this study, we analyzed testicular tissue samples from CO, TGCT, and controls. We determined the expression of POU5F1, PLAP, and KIT by immunohistochemistry and that of the hsa-miR-371-373 cluster, hsa-miR-367, and LATS2, PTEN, and IGFR1 genes by RT-qPCR. We then carried out a bioinformatic analysis to identify other possible candidate genes as tumor biomarkers. We found that 16.7% (2/12) of the CO patients presented increased expression of POU5F1, KIT, PLAP, hsa-miR-371-373, and hsa-miR-367 and decreased expression of LATS2 and IGF1R. Finally, the genes ARID4B, GALNT3, and KPNA6 were identified as other possible candidate tumor biomarkers. This is the first report describing the expression of the hsa-miR-371-373 cluster, hsa-miR-367, LATS2, and IGF1R in the testicular tissues of two CO patients with cells immune-positive to POU5F1, PLAP, and KIT, which is similar to what is observed in TGCT.

La incorporación al suelo de biocarbón obtenido de cascarillas, rastrojos, residuos forestales, estiércoles, entre otros residuos puede mejorar el crecimiento de los cultivos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el efecto del biocarbón de ápices de caña de azúcar (BACA) en el crecimiento de albahaca tailandesa (Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora) cultivada en invernadero. Los tratamientos consistieron en mezclas de biocarbón y suelo franco arenoso (v/v) de 0 (testigo), 7, 14, 21 y 28%. Se evaluó altura de planta, materia fresca y seca, área foliar, unidades SPAD y la concentración nutrimental foliar. El uso de BACA al 7% incrementó 45.1% la materia fresca, 35.2% la materia seca y 54.5% el área foliar. Por otro lado, el tratamiento con BACA 21% presentó la mayor concentración foliar de N-total (44.3 g kg-1), P (9.55 mg kg-1) y Ca (12.6 mg kg‑1). El biocarbón de ápices de caña de azúcar puede ser incorporado al suelo como una alternativa en el manejo agronómico de albahaca tailandesa.

Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is an important prognostic factor in cervical cancer (CC). In early stages, the risk of LNM is approximately 3.7 to 21.7%, and the 5-year overall survival decreases from 80% to 53% when metastatic disease is identified in the lymph nodes. Few reports have analyzed the relationship between miRNA expression and the presence of LNM. The aim of this study was to identify a subset of miRNAs related to LNM in early-stage CC patients. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks were collected from patients with early-stage CC treated by radical hysterectomy with lymphadenectomy. We analyzed samples from two groups of patients—one group with LNM and the other without LNM. Global miRNA expression was identified by microarray analysis, and cluster analysis was used to determine a subset of miRNAs associated with LNM. Microarray expression profiling identified a subset of 36 differentially expressed miRNAs in the two groups (fold change (FC) ≥ 1.5 and p < 0.01). We validated the expression of seven miRNAs; miR-487b, miR-29b-2-5p, and miR-195 were underexpressed, and miR-92b-5p, miR-483-5p, miR-4534, and miR-548ac were overexpressed according to the microarray experiments. This signature exhibited prognostic value for identifying early-stage CC patients with LNM. These findings may help detect LNM that cannot be observed in imaging studies.

Polarity items have been analyzed as existential quantifiers that introduce alternatives into the semantic derivation (Krifka 1991; 1995; Kratzer & Shimoyama 2002; Chierchia 2013). Under this approach, variation in the polarity system can be reduced to variation in the types of alternatives that polarity items introduce (Chierchia 2013). We present a case of dialectal variation within the polarity system that can be treated along these lines. The paper focuses on Spanish siquiera, a concessive scalar particle. Concessive scalar particles (Slovenian magari, Greek esto, and Spanish siquiera) (Crnič 2011a; b) are polarity items licensed in a variety of downward entailing environments, where they can be paraphrased with English even, and in modal environments, where they can be paraphrased with English at least. The paper shows that the interpretation and distribution of Spanish siquiera differs between Iberian and Andean Spanish. We propose that siquiera shares the same assertive core across dialects, but differs in the types of alternatives that it introduces.

With the upcoming Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) satellite mission from the European Space Agency, vegetation fluorescence (650–780 nm) will become available at 300x300 m resolution. Calibration and validation strategies of the fluorescence (F) signal remain however challenging, due to (1) the radiometric subtlety of the signal, (2) the multiple entangled drivers of the signal in space and in time, and (3) the need of a spatially representative acquisition, considering the previous two points. To tackle these challenges, the present work introduces the FluoCat, a cable-suspended system for the proximal sensing indirect measurement of solar-induced fluorescence, mounted across an agricultural field, covering a 60-m transect. On board the FluoCat are mounted: a high-spectral resolution Piccolo Doppio dual spectrometer system, a MAIA-S2 multispectral camera and a TeAx Thermal Capture Fusion camera, which can be triggered simultaneously according to a pre-set protocol.In order to test the system, two protocols were evaluated, a point-wise protocol, stopping at a pre-determined points to acquire the measurements, and the swiping protocol, acquiring measurements while in movement along the transect. Taking as a reference the values obtained with the swiping protocol, which captures the higher spatial variability, it was found that to achieve an averaged mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) below 2 % within between the spectral range of 500–800 nm, it is required a minimum of 6 sampling points to characterize the spectral variability of the 40-m melon crop transect.Further, by combining the fluorescence products of the Piccolo system normalized by PAR (NormF687, NormF760) and the fractional cover of sunlit vegetation (FVC Sunlit) obtained from the MAIA, we developed a multi-sensor product, i.e., the ‘sunlit green F’ for both retrieved bands. This synergy product improved the estimation of the effective surface fluorescence flux, with the leaf fluorescence emission as reference, by reducing the errors from 36 % to 18 % (band 687 nm); and from 24 % to 6 % (band 760 nm).

IntroductionDysmorphic uterus or T-shaped uterus is an increasingly frequent diagnosis among the infertile population that has been associated to worse reproductive results. For this reason, benefits, risks and alternatives of this intervention should be considered with caution.ConclusionsEvidence from published data shows a probable association between dysmorphic uterus and poor reproductive outcomes. Hysteroscopic metroplasty in patients with dysmorphic uterus could improve pregnancy outcomes, but there is need of properly designed prospective controlled studies to determine the benefits of this technique.

PURPOSECancer treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic represents a challenge. Hospital visits to receive treatment and interaction with health care workers (HCW) represent potential contagious events. We aimed to determine SARS-CoV-2 infection rate among patients with cancer and HCW of a chemoradiotherapy unit localized in a center designated as a COVID-19 priority facility in Mexico City. We also determined the diagnostic performance of a clinical questionnaire (CQ) as a screening tool and anti–SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroconversion rate.METHODSHCW and patients with solid tumors attending the chemoradiotherapy unit signed informed consent. To determine SARS-CoV-2 infection rate prospectively, a nasopharyngeal swab for SARS-CoV-2 real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was performed every 2 weeks in asymptomatics. An electronic CQ interrogating COVID-19–related symptoms was sent daily. Anti–SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies were measured at baseline and at the end of the study period.RESULTSFrom June to September 2020, we included 130 asymptomatic participants, 44.6% HCW and 55.4% patients with cancer. During a median follow-up of 85 days, 634 nasopharyngeal swabs were performed. Average SARS-CoV-2 monthly incidence was 4.6% (3.15%-7.47%), and cumulative infection rate was 13.8% (18 of 130). Cases were mostly asymptomatic (66%), and no hospitalizations or deaths were recorded. The CQ as a screening tool provided a sensitivity of 27.7%, a positive predictive value of 26.3%, and a positive likelihood ratio of 12. SARS-CoV-2 IgG seroconversion rate was 27.7% among those with a positive RT-PCR.CONCLUSIONPatients with cancer on treatment can have uncomplicated COVID-19 outcomes. Biweekly RT-qPCR testing detects asymptomatic infections, prevents transmission, and should be implemented in units to increase patient safety. CQ increase RT-qPCR diagnostic yield and may prioritize testing in resource-deprived settings. Post-infection IgG seroconversion is unreliable.

Este proyecto simuló escenarios de confinamiento que buscan analizar diferentes formas de la sección transversal del plasma y de esta manera prever el parámetro beta óptimo en un tokamak esférico de baja razón de aspecto como lo es MEDUSA-CR. Además, se busca diseñar sistemas para operación y diagnóstico en este dispositivo. Finalmente, en este proyecto proponemos un experimento único como prueba de principio utilizando antenas RF para inducir ondas de Alfvén en un Tokamak esférico. Las simulaciones de las interacciones del plasma con las ondas electromagnéticas RF y ECRH permiten explorar en este dispositivo escenarios de calentamiento optimizado que también son del interés de la comunidad científica debido a que la alta temperatura es un requisito indispensable para procesos de fusión.

Los medios sonoros y las obras literarias han gozado de una relación estrecha desde las primeras emisiones radiofónicas. Este trabajo analiza la adaptación del texto cervantino del Quijote en una de las obras de interpretación más interesantes producidas en España: Diálogos de don Quijote y Sancho, grabada y editada por la editorial Aguilar en 1964. Aunque no es la única ficción que ha perseguido adaptar el universo cervantino a las ondas, esta investigación argumenta y justifica por qué la obra sonora, dirigida y adaptada por José Miguel Belloso y protagonizada por Fernando Fernán-Gómez y Agustín González, adquiere una especial relevancia en la transmisión oral del Quijote. La investigación ahonda en las características adaptativas de aquellos pasajes seleccionados para su interpretación, así como en los elementos diferenciadores que hacen que esta obra haya contribuido narrativa y tecnológicamente, de manera magistral, al mantenimiento del legado cervantino.

Objetivo. Proponer y ensayar una metodología de análisis de la información de los delitos de alto impacto en el Estado de Morelos, México en el periodo 2012-2013. Metodología. La información básica proviene del Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública de la Secretaría de Gobernación para los siguientes ocho delitos: secuestro, homicidio doloso, lesión dolosa con arma blanca, robo común a transeúntes sin violencia, robo común a transeúntes con violencias, robo común de vehículos sin violencia, robo común de vehículos con violencia y, extorsión. Se utilizaron las proyecciones de población del Consejo Nacional de Población y, el catálogo de municipios del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía. Resultados: Se calcularon las tasas de delitos por cada 100 mil habitantes. Se ha logrado hacer mejoras en el proceso de automatización, en particular en la codificación de las variables que permiten la integración con otras fuentes de información, así como en la generación de las tasas. La base de datos resultante fue utilizada para el mapeo, del cual se presenta un ejemplo. Conclusiones: Se pudieron detectar procesos que no habían sido planteados en los diversos esquemas desarrollados y se requiere una revisión de los tipos de mapas.

Fast urbanization and climate change require innovative systems for an efficient movement of people and goods in cities. As trends towards vehicle-sharing, autonomous vehicles, and the use of micro-mobility systems gain strength, the intersection of these fields appears as an area of great opportunity. Autonomy could potentially bring the convenience of on-demand mobility into already prevalent shared micro-mobility systems (SMMS), increasing their efficiency and incentivizing more people to use active mobility modes. The novelty of introducing autonomous driving technology into SMMS and their inherent complexity requires tools to assess and quantify the potential impact of autonomy on fleet performance and user experience. This paper presents an ad-hoc agent-based simulator for the assessment of the fleet behavior of autonomous SMMS in realistic scenarios, including a rebalancing system based on demand prediction. It also allows comparing its performance to station-based and dockless schemes. The proposed simulation framework is highly configurable and flexible and works with high resolution and precision geospatial data. The results of studies carried out with this simulation tool could provide valuable insights for many stakeholders, including vehicle design engineers, fleet operators, city planners, and governments.

As society faces global challenges such as population growth and climate change, rethinking cities is now more imperative than ever. The design of cities can not be abstracted from the design of their mobility systems. Therefore, efficient solutions must be found to transport people and goods throughout the city efficiently and ecologically. An autonomous bicycle-sharing system would combine the most relevant benefits of vehicle-sharing, autonomy, and micro-mobility, increasing the efficiency and convenience of bicycle-sharing systems and incentivizing more people to bike and enjoy their cities in an environmentally friendly way. Due to the novelty of introducing autonomous driving technology into bicycle-sharing systems and their inherent complexity, there is a need to quantify the potential impact of autonomy on fleet performance and user experience. This paper presents the results of an agent-based simulation that provides an in-depth understanding of the fleet behavior of autonomous bicycle-sharing systems in realistic scenarios, including a rebalancing system based on demand prediction. In addition, this work describes the impact of different parameters on system efficiency and service quality. Finally, it quantifies the extent to which an autonomous system would outperform current station-based and dockless bicycle-sharing schemes. The obtained results show that with a fleet size three and a half times smaller than a station-based system and eight times smaller than a dockless system, an autonomous system can improve overall performance and user experience even with no rebalancing.

Resumen: Introducción: El seguimiento telefónico es una posible alternativa para la atención médica de niños con COVID-19. Nuestro objetivo es describir la experiencia del seguimiento telemático realizado en un hospital terciario. Pacientes y métodos: Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de los niños con diagnóstico confirmado o probable de COVID-19 atendidos en la consulta de seguimiento del Hospital La Paz entre marzo y junio del 2020. Se realizaron llamadas cada 48 h hasta desaparecer los síntomas y posteriormente semanales hasta estar 14 días asintomáticos. Resultados: Se incluyó a 72 niños con una mediana de edad de 83,5 meses (RIC = 16,3-157,5); 46 eran varones (63,9%) y 14 tenían comorbilidades (19,4%); 32 pacientes (44,4%) habían requerido ingreso hospitalario. Se confirmó diagnóstico de COVID-19 en 33 niños por PCR y en 7 por serología. De los confirmados por PCR, seroconvirtió el 67,7%. Se demostraron otras etiologías en 7 pacientes (5 Mycoplasma pneumoniae, uno parvovirus y uno citomegalovirus).La mediana de duración de síntomas fue 25,5 días (RIC = 13,8-37), con mediana de tiempo de seguimiento de 28 días (RIC = 21-39). Se realizó una mediana de 6 llamadas (RIC = 4-8) por niño; 19 pacientes (26,4%) refirieron empeoramiento en el seguimiento, precisando 14 (19,4%) ser revaluados en Urgencias. Un niño necesitó reingresar, siendo la evolución favorable. Conclusiones: Ante sospecha de COVID-19, es recomendable el seguimiento médico por la prolongada duración de síntomas y el riesgo de empeoramiento. Las consultas telefónicas son útiles y seguras para el seguimiento de casos leves y pacientes hospitalizados tras el alta, permitiendo reducir controles presenciales y el consumo de otros recursos. There were 32 (44.4%) hospital admissions. COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed in 33 children by RT-PCR, and in 7 by serology tests. The seroconversion rate was 67.7% in those patients with a positive RT-PCR. Other infections were found in 7 patients (5 Mycoplasma pneumoniae, 1 parvovirus, and 1 cytomegalovirus).Median symptom duration was 25.5 days (IQR = 13.8-37), while median follow-up duration was 28 days (IQR = 21-39). The median number of telephone consultations per patient was 6 (IQR = 4-8). Clinical worsening was reported in 19 (26.4%) during follow-up, and 14 (19.4%) were re-evaluated in the Emergency Department. One patient required hospital admission, but he had a favourable outcome. Conclusions: Children with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection should be followed-up due to prolonged duration of symptoms, and the risk of clinical deterioration. Se demostraron otras etiologías en 7 pacientes (5 Mycoplasma pneumoniae, 1 parvovirus y 1 CMV).La mediana de duración de síntomas fue 25,5 días [RIC = 13,8-37], con mediana de tiempo de seguimiento de 28 días [RIC = 21-39]. Se realizó una mediana de 6 llamadas [RIC = 4-8] por niño. 19 pacientes (26,4%) refirieron empeoramiento en el seguimiento, precisando 14 (19,4%) ser reevaluados en urgencias. Un niño necesitó reingresar siendo la evolución favorable. Conclusiones: Ante sospecha de COVID-19 es recomendable el seguimiento médico por la prolongada duración de síntomas y el riesgo de empeoramiento. Las consultas telefónicas son útiles y seguras para el seguimiento de casos leves y pacientes hospitalizados tras el alta, permitiendo reducir controles presenciales y el consumo de otros recursos.

Resumen: El culto al presidente Hugo Chávez en sectores populares urbanos de la capital venezolana se ha reforzado en medio de la pandemia. Un trabajo de campo realizado durante las semanas de flexibilización decretadas por el gobierno de Venezuela, evidenció que los creyentes visitaban la capilla consagrada a San Hugo Chávez del 23, ubicada en la parroquia 23 de enero de Caracas, para pedir protección, viviendas, intervenciones quirúrgicas y dar gracias por asuntos relacionados a la salud, incluyendo sanaciones entre contagiados por la Covid-19. En este sentido, estamos frente a una forma de religiosidad en la que los creyentes buscan resolver problemas de la vida cotidiana, estableciendo un fuerte vínculo sagrado con la imagen sacralizada de Chávez, relación inmanente que parece no separar lo sagrado de lo político, es decir, lo “cosmopolítico”. Por otra parte, se aprecia cómo desde el discurso oficial, se refuerza la imagen de Chávez como el salvador/protector del país, razón por la cual, Venezuela tendría los índices más bajos de contagiados de toda América Latina.

Background Prevention strategies for cancer are necessary. Health workers who often serve as role models bear responsibility for prevention counseling and programs. However, whether their habits and behaviors reflect prevention goals are unknown. We describe the prevalence of cancer risk factors and prevention behaviors in health workers of a referral cancer center in Mexico City. Methods Cross-sectional study in which workers of the National Cancer Institute were invited to participate in a prevention program, risk factor survey, and nutrition, psychological, and genetic counseling were included. The likelihood of cancer was calculated based on the presence of risk factors. Factors associated with prevention behaviors were identified by logistic regression. Results We recruited 301 workers; 77% were women. The median self-reported BMI was 26.4 kg/m 2 , 9.97% smoked, 78% drank alcohol, and 89% did not get at least 150 min/week of physical activity. In women, age (OR = 1.3 95%CI 1.01-1.06) and physical activity of 150 min/week (OR = 2.52 95% CI 1.28-4.96) were associated with cancer prevention behaviors. No risk factors were associated with healthy behaviors among men. Conclusion Health workers may have unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors, is essential to create supportive environments to promote cancer prevention counseling and programs effectively.

Este trabajo, realizado sobre todo a partir de fuentes procedentes del Archivo General de Indias, pretende insertar la investigación sobre las expediciones a las islas de la Especiería realizadas por la Monarquía Hispánica durante el siglo XVI en una única línea temporal, que se inicia con el viaje de Magallanes (1519-1522) y finaliza con el de Legazpi (1564) a las islas Filipinas. En este mismo recorrido temporal, se revisa y completa, asimismo, la financiación de los viajes realizados en busca de las especias, para finalizar concluyendo la escasa rentabilidad del gasto realizado, tanto público como privado.

Railway track faults may lead to railway accidents and cause human and financial loss. Spatial, temporal, and weather elements, and wear and tear, lead to ballast, loose nuts, misalignment, and cracks leading to accidents. Manual inspection of such defects is time-consuming and prone to errors. Automatic inspection provides a fast, reliable, and unbiased solution. However, highly accurate fault detection is challenging due to the lack of public datasets, noisy data, inefficient models, etc. To obtain better performance, this study presents a novel approach that relies on mel frequency cepstral coefficient features from acoustic data. The primary objective of this study is to increase fault detection performance. As well as designing an ensemble model, we utilize selective features using chi-square(chi2) that have high importance with respect to the target class. Extensive experiments were carried out to analyze the efficiency of the proposed approach. The experimental results suggest that using 60 features, 40 original features, and 20 chi2 features produces optimal results both regarding accuracy and computational complexity. A mean accuracy score of 0.99 was obtained using the proposed approach with machine learning models using the collected data. Moreover, this performance was significantly better than that of existing approaches; however, the performance of models may vary in real-world settings.

Agriculture is a critical domain, where technology can have a significant impact on increasing yields, improving crop quality, and reducing environmental impact. The use of renewable energy sources such as solar power in agriculture has gained momentum in recent years due to the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of farming operations. In addition to providing a source of clean energy, solar tracking systems can also be used for remote weather monitoring in the agricultural field. The ability to collect real-time data on weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall can help farmers make informed decisions on irrigation, pest control, and other crop management practices. The main idea of this study is to present a system that can improve the efficiency of solar panels to provide constant power to the sensor in the agricultural field and transfer real-time data to the app. This research presents a mechanism to improve the arrangement of a photovoltaic (PV) array with solar power and to produce maximum energy. The proposed system changes its direction in two axes (azimuth and elevation) by detecting the difference between the position of the sun and the panel to track the sun using a light-dependent resistor. A testbed with a hardware experimental setup is designed to test the system’s capability to track according to the position of the sun effectively. In the end, real-time data are displayed using the Android app, and the weather data are transferred to the app using a GSM/WiFi module. This research improves the existing system, and results showed that the relative increase in power generation was up to 52%. Using intelligent artificial intelligence techniques with the QoS algorithm, the quality of service produced by the existing system is improved.

In the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-mediated technologies have undergone rapid evolution in healthcare and medicine, from apps to computer software able to analyze medical images, robotic surgery and advanced data storage system. The main aim of the present commentary is to briefly describe the evolution of AI and its applications in healthcare, particularly in nutrition and clinical biochemistry. Indeed, AI is revealing itself to be an important tool in clinical nutrition by using telematic means to self-monitor various health metrics, including blood glucose levels, body weight, heart rate, fat percentage, blood pressure, activity tracking and calorie intake trackers. In particular, the application of the most common digital technologies used in the field of nutrition as well as the employment of AI in the management of diabetes and obesity, two of the most common nutrition-related pathologies worldwide, will be presented.

Sub-irrigation of greenhouse crops has the potential to increase water and nutrient use efficiency; however, fertilizer salts that are not absorbed by the plants tend to accumulate in the substrate and eventually raise the substrate’s electrical conductivity (EC). The objective of this study was to determine the optimum EC of the nutrient solution in sub-irrigated tomatoes to allow maximum yield. Total fruit yield was higher in sub-irrigated plants with solutions at 2.0 dS m−1 (5105 g per plant), and it was comparable to that obtained for drip-irrigated plants (4903 g per plant); however, the yield of fruits from the second truss was 37% higher in sub-irrigated than in drip-irrigated plants when the EC was 2.0 dS m−1. In contrast, at the end of the growing season, the yield of plants sub-irrigated with nutrient solutions of 2.0 dS m−1 was the lowest, being surpassed by 37% by that of plants treated with 1.4 dS m−1. The dry weight of vegetative plant parts was reduced in sub-irrigated plants, suggesting a shift in dry mass partitioning. Our results show that with sub-irrigation, the growing season should be started using nutrient solutions with higher EC, but eventually, this EC should be decreased to maintain proper substrate EC and high yield.

Blueberry is a highly demanded and consumed fruit due to its beneficial effects on human health, because of its bioactive compounds with a high antioxidant capacity. The interest in increasing the yield and quality of blueberries has led to the application of some innovative techniques such as biostimulation. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of the exogenous application of glutamic acid (GLU) and 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) as biostimulants on flower bud sprouting, fruit quality, and antioxidant compounds in blueberry cv. Biloxi. The application of GLU and 6-BAP positively affected bud sprouting, fruit quality, and antioxidant content. The application of 500 and 10 mg L−1 GLU and 6-BAP, respectively, increased the number of flower buds, while 500 and 20 mg L−1 generated fruits with higher content of flavonoids, vitamin C, and anthocyanins and higher enzymatic activity of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase enzymes. Hence, the application of these biostimulants is an effective way to enhance the yield and fruit quality of blueberries.

Abstract Aims There are controversial data on the ability of the components of mineral metabolism (vitamin D, phosphate, parathormone [PTH], fibroblast growth factor‐23 [FGF23], and klotho) to predict cardiovascular events. In addition, it is unknown whether they add any prognostic value to other well‐known biomarkers. Methods and results In 969 stable coronary patients, we determined plasma levels of all the aforementioned components of mineral metabolism with a complete set of clinical and biochemical variables, including N‐terminal pro‐brain natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP), high‐sensitivity troponin I (hs‐TnI), and high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein. Secondary outcomes were ischaemic events (any acute coronary syndrome, stroke, or transient ischaemic attack) and heart failure or death. The primary outcome was a composite of the secondary outcomes. Median follow‐up was 5.39 years. Age was 60 (52–72) years. Median glomerular filtration rate was 80.4 (65.3–93.1) mL/min/1.73 m2. One‐hundred and eighty‐five patients developed the primary outcome. FGF23, PTH, hs‐TnI, and NT‐proBNP were directly related with the primary outcome on univariate Cox analysis, while Klotho and calcidiol were inversely related. El nitrógeno (N) y azufre (S) son nutrimentos que tienen una fuerte interacción en sus vías de asimilación. Por lo tanto, la adición de estos en una adecuada proporción influye positivamente en el desarrollo de las plantas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de la interacción de diferentes concentraciones de NH4+ y SO42- en variables de crecimiento, fisiológicas y de concentración de macronutrimentos en las plantas de lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum (Raf.) Shinn.) cv. ABC 1-2 Rosado Oscuro. Los tratamientos evaluados consistieron en tres concentraciones de NH4+ (0, 2.5 y 5 meq L-1) y dos concentraciones de SO42- (7 y 10 meq L-1). Las diferentes concentraciones de SO42- y NH4+ se diseñaron a partir de modificaciones de la solución nutritiva de Steiner. Se utilizaron contenedores de polietileno negro de 10 L y sustrato perlita con partículas de 0.2-0.5 mm de diámetro. Los resultados mostraron que el diámetro de tallo y la producción de biomasa seca en raíz, tallo, flor y total fueron mayores al suministrar 5 meq L-1 de NH4+ con 7 meq L-1 de SO42-. Por otro lado, el peso seco de hoja y altura de planta fue mayor al emplear 2.5 meq L-1 de NH4+ con 7 meq L-1 de SO42-. Este mismo comportamiento se observó en los parámetros de fotosíntesis, transpiración y conductancia estomática. La mayor concentración de N y P se obtuvo al emplear 2.5 meq L-1 de NH4+ con 10 meq L-1 de SO42-; asimismo, la concentración de Mg y S fue mayor con 2.5 meq L-1 de NH4+ en ambas concentraciones de SO42; mientras que K y Ca fue mayor al incrementar la concentración de NH4+ con 7 meq L-1 de SO42-. El mejor crecimiento, producción de biomasa y concentración de nutrimentos (K y Ca) de las plantas de lisianthus se obtiene con la proporción 5 meq L-1 de NH4+/ 7 meq L-1 de SO42-; mientras que, la actividad fisiológica es favorecida por la proporción 2.5 meq L-1 de NH4+ / 7 meq L-1 de SO42-.

La papa (Solanum tuberosum L.) es uno de los principales cultivos para la alimentación de la población mundial. Debido a la acumulación de problemas fitosanitarios, los productores de este cultivo se han visto obligados a realizar una mayor aplicación de pesticidas, afectando al medio ambiente y la rentabilidad. Una estrategia para disminuir los problemas fitosanitarios en papa es iniciar el ciclo de producción con mini tubérculos libre de enfermedades, los cuales se producen cultivando plantas certificadas en suelo libre de patógenos; sin embargo, en un sistema de aeroponía, o bien en un sistema de cultivo sin suelo, es posible obtener un mayor rendimiento y calidad del mini tubérculo. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el efecto del sistema de aeroponía en la producción de mini tubérculos de papa, comparado con la producción en contenedor en suelo o en un sustrato a base de polvo de coco. En el sistema aeropónico se presentó una producción de mini tubérculos 4.4 × superior al obtenido por plantas en suelo, mientras que las plantas en polvo de coco superaron también a las crecidas en suelo en 40%. La mayor producción de mini tubérculos en aeroponía estuvo asociado con una mayor producción de estolones, ya que estos fueron 2.4 × mayor al producido por plantas en suelo. En aeroponía, el 96.6% de los mini tubérculos pesaron menos de 50 g y solo el 3.4% fue mayor de 50 g; en contraste, el 19.8 y 24.3% de los mini tubérculos fueron mayores de 51 g en plantas crecidas en polvo de coco o en suelo, respectivamente. En general, el crecimiento vegetativo de las plantas en aeroponía fue mayor que el obtenido en polvo de coco y suelo.
