Search

Some highlights of the recent researches in the field of relativistic jets are reviewed and critically analyzed. Given the extent of the available literature, this essay symbolically takes the baton from the outstanding and recent review by Blandford, Meier, and Readhead (2019). We are compiling a new list of gamma-ray jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN), starting from the fourth catalog of point sources of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Our aim is to prepare a list of jetted AGN with known redshifts and classifications to be used to calibrate jet power. We searched in the available literature for all the published optical spectra and multiwavelength studies useful to characterize the sources. We found new, missed, or even forgotten information leading to a substantial change in the redshift values and classification of many sources. We present here the preliminary results of this analysis and some statistics based on the gamma-ray sources with right ascension within the interval 0h–12h (J2000). Although flat-spectrum radio quasars and BL Lac objects are still the dominant populations, there is a significant increase in the number of other objects, such as misaligned AGN, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and Seyfert galaxies. We also introduced two new classes of objects: changing-look AGN and ambiguous sources. About one third of the sources remain unclassified.

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, shows gamma-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike other gamma-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. In conclusion, we confirm that PKS 2004-447 is one of the rare examples of gamma-ray emitting CSS/NLS1s hybrid, and that these two classes of objects are likely connected in the framework of AGN evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, resubmitted to A&A after minor comments from the referee

Gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($\gamma$-NLS1) galaxies possibly harbour relatively low-mass black holes (10$^6$-10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) accreting close to the Eddington limit, and share many characteristics with their sibling sources, flat-spectrum radio quasars. Although they have been detected in the MeV--GeV band with Fermi-LAT, they have never been seen in the very high energy band with current imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Thus, they are key targets for the next-generation IACT, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). In a previous work we selected, by means of extensive simulations, the best candidates for a prospective CTA detection (SBS 0846$+$513, PMN J0948$+$0022, and PKS 1502$+$036) taking into account the effects of both the intrinsic absorption (approximated with a cut-off at 30 GeV), and the extra-galactic background light on the propagation of $\gamma$-rays. In this work we simulate the spectra of these three sources by adopting more realistic broad-line region (BLR) absorption models. In particular, we consider the detailed treatment of $\gamma$-$\gamma$ absorption in the radiation fields of the BLR as a function of the location of the $\gamma$-ray emission region with parameters inferred from observational constraints. We find that, due to the energy range extent and its sensitivity, CTA is particularly well suited to locate the $\gamma$-ray emitting region in $\gamma$-NLS1. We present the results of new radio observations carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array C-configuration at 5.5 GHz for a sample of southern narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). This work increases the number of known radio-detected NLS1s in the southern hemisphere, and confirms that the radio emission of NLS1s is mainly concentrated in a central region at kpc-scale and only a few sources show diffuse emission. In radio-quiet NLS1s, the radio luminosity tends to be higher in steep-spectrum sources and be lower in flat-spectrum sources, which is opposite to radio-loud NLS1s. This may be because the radio emission of steep NLS1s is dominated by misaligned jets, AGN-driven outflows, or star formation superposing on a compact core. Instead the radio emission of flat NLS1s may be produced by a central core which has not yet developed radio jets and outflows. We discover new NLS1s harboring kpc-scale radio jets and confirm that a powerful jet does not require a large-mass black hole to be generated. We also find sources dominated by star formation. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is one of the few classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) harboring powerful relativistic jets and detected in $\gamma$ rays. NLS1s are well-known X-ray sources. While in non-jetted sources the origin of this X-ray emission may be a hot corona surrounding the accretion disk, in jetted objects, especially beamed ones, the contribution of corona and relativistic jet is difficult to disentangle without a proper sampling of the hard X-ray emission. For this reason, we observed with \textit{NuSTAR} the first four NLS1s detected at high energy $\gamma$ rays. These data, along with \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{Swift/XRT} observations, confirmed that X rays originate both in the jet and in the accretion disk corona. Time variability in hard X rays furthermore suggests that, as observed in flat-spectrum radio quasars, the dissipation region during flares could change its position from source to source, and it can be located both inside and outside the broad-line region. We find that jetted NLS1s, and other blazars as well, seem not to follow the classical fundamental plane of black hole activity, which therefore should be used as a black hole mass estimator in blazars with extreme care only. We report the first results of a survey on 74 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) carried out in 2015 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A-configuration. So far, this is the largest survey aimed to image the radio continuum of NLS1s. We produced radio maps in order to compare the general properties of three different samples of objects: radio-quiet NLS1s (RQNLS1s), steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (S-NLS1s), and flat-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (F-NLS1s). We find that the three classes correspond to different radio morphologies, with F-NLS1s being more compact, and RQNLS1s often showing diffuse emission on kpc scales. We also find that F-NLS1s might be low-luminosity and possibly young blazars, and that S-NLS1s are part of the parent population of F-NLS1s. International audience; Gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($\gamma$-NLSy1) galaxies are jetted sources hosting a relatively low-mass black hole (10$^6$--10$^8$ $M_{\odot}$) which accretes close to the Eddington limit. $\gamma$-NLSy1 galaxies show flux and spectral variability in the gamma-ray energy band and radio properties similar to those of blazars, which indicate the presence of a relativistic jet. These properties make them interesting to investigate with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. CTA will cover the 20 GeV--300 TeV energy range, with an improvement in average differential sensitivity by a factor 5--20 with respect to the current imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays. For transients/flaring events (timescales of $\sim 1$ day or shorter) CTA will be about two orders of magnitude more sensitive with respect to Fermi-LAT at the overlapping energy of 25 GeV, allowing an unprecedented opportunity to investigate flaring $\gamma$-NLSy1 galaxies. We present preliminary results obtained by simulating the prototypical $\gamma$-NLSy1 galaxy, PMN~J0948$+$0022, by means of the CTA public {\tt ctools} software and the public instrument response files,investigating its possible detection and spectral properties, taking into account the effect of both the extra-galactic background light and intrinsic absorption components.

We present a new accurate catalog of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) final data release, which is currently the most extensive spectroscopic survey available in the southern sky whose database has not yet been systematically explored. We classified 167 sources as NLS1s based on their optical spectral properties. We derived flux-calibrated spectra for the first time that the 6dFGS indeed does not provide. By analyzing these spectra, we obtained strong correlations between the monochromatic luminosity at 5100 A and the luminosity of Hbeta and [O III]5007 lines. The estimated central black hole mass and Eddington ratio have an average value of 8.6 x 10^6 M_Sun and 0.96 L_Edd respectively, which is a typical value for NLS1s. In the sample, 23 (13.8%) NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies, and 12 (7.0%) of them are radio-loud. Our results confirmed that radio-loud sources tend to have a higher redshift, more massive black hole, and higher radio and optical luminosity than radio-quiet sources., Comment: Publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($\gamma$-NLSy1) galaxies are thought to harbour relatively low-mass black holes (10$^6$-10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) accreting close to the Eddington limit. They show characteristics similar to those of blazars, such as flux and spectral variability in the gamma-ray energy band and radio properties which point toward the presence of a relativistic jet. These characteristics make them an intriguing class of sources to be investigated with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. We present our extensive set of simulations of all currently known $\gamma$-ray emitters identified as NLS1s (20 sources),investigating their detections and spectral properties, taking into account the effect of both the extra-galactic background light in the propagation of gamma-rays and intrinsic absorption components.We find that the prospects for observations of $\gamma$-NLSy1 with CTA are promising. In particular, the brightest sources of our sample, SBS 0846+513, PMN J0948+0022, and PKS 1502+036 can be detected during high/flaring states, the former two even in the case in which the emission occurs within the highly opaque central regions, which prevent $\gamma$ rays above few tens of GeV to escape. In this case the low-energy threshold of CTA will play a key role. If, on the other hand, high-energy emission occurs outside the broad line region, we can detect the sources up to several hundreds of GeV-depending on the intrinsic shape of the emitted spectrum. We observed 5 gamma-ray loud blazars at redshift greater than 2 with the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and the UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) onboard the Swift satellite, and the Gamma-Ray burst Optical Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) instrument. These observations were quasi simultaneous, usually within a few hours. For 4 of these blazars the near-IR to UV data show the presence of an accretion disc, and we could reliably estimate its accretion rate and black hole mass. One of them, PKS 1348+007, was found in an extraordinarily high IR-optical state, almost two orders of magnitude brighter than at the epoch of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey observations. For all the 5 quasars the physical parameters of the jet emitting zone, derived by applying a one-zone emission model, are similar to that found for the bulk of other gamma-ray loud quasars. With our observations we have X-ray data for the full sample of blazars at z>2 present in the Fermi 2-yrs (2LAC) catalog. This allows to have a rather complete view of the spectral energy distribution of all high-redshift Fermi blazars, and to draw some conclusions about their properties, and especially about the relation between the accretion rate and the jet power., 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The [O III] $\lambda\lambda$ 4959,5007 lines are a useful proxy to test the kinematic of the narrow-line region (NLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN). In AGN, and particularly in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) these lines often show few peculiar features, such as blue wings, often interpreted as outflowing component, and a shift $-$ typically toward lower wavelengths $-$ of the whole spectroscopic feature in some exceptional sources, the so-called blue outliers, which are often associated to strong winds. We investigated the incidence of these peculiarities in two samples of radio-emitting NLS1s, one radio-loud and one radio-quiet. We also studied a few correlations between the observational properties of the [O III] lines and those of the AGN. Our aim was to understand the difference between radio-quiet and radio-loud NLS1s, which may in turn provide useful information on the jet formation mechanism. We find that the NLR gas is much more perturbed in radio-loud than in radio-quiet NLS1s. In particular the NLR dynamics in $\gamma$-ray emitting NLS1s appears to be highly disturbed, and this might be a consequence of interaction with the relativistic jet. The less frequently perturbed NLR in radio-quiet NLS1s suggests instead that these sources likely do not harbor a fully developed relativistic jet. The radio-loud quasar SDSS J102623.61+254259.5, at a redshift z=5.3, is one of the most distant radio-loud objects. Since its radio flux exceeds 100 mJy at a few GHz, it is also one of the most powerful radio-loud sources. We propose that this source is a blazar, i.e. we are seeing its jet at a small viewing angle. This claim is based on the spectral energy distribution of this source, and especially on its strong and hard X-ray spectrum, as seen by Swift, very typical of powerful blazars. Observations by the Gamma-Ray Burst Optical/Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) and by theWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) allow to establish the thermal nature of the emission in the near IR-optical band. Assuming that this is produced by a standard accretion disk, we derive that it emits a luminosity of L_d \simeq 9 \times 10^46 erg s^{-1} and that the black hole has a mass between 2 and 5 billion solar masses. This poses interesting constraints on the mass function of heavy (> 10^9 M_sun) black holes at high redshifts.

Many blazars detected by the Fermi satellite, observed spectroscopically in the optical, are line-less, and have been classified as BL Lac objects. Optical-UV photometry of nearly one hundred of them allowed to determine the redshift for a handful of objects and redshift upper limits for the great majority. A few of these are candidates to be "blue quasars", namely flat spectrum radio quasars whose broad emission lines are hidden by an overwhelming synchrotron emission peaking in the UV. This implies that the emitting electrons have high energies. In turn, this requires relatively weak radiative cooling, a condition that can be met if the main radiative dissipation of the jet power occurs outside the broad line region. We confirm this hypothesis by studying and modelling the spectral energy distributions of the 4 "blue quasars" recently discovered. Furthermore, we discuss the distribution of Fermi blazars in the gamma-ray spectral index -- gamma-ray luminosity plane, and argue that "blue quasars" objects are a minority within the blazar populations.

The classical diagrams of radio loudness and jet power as a function of mass and accretion rate of the central spacetime singularity in active galactic nuclei are reanalyzed by including the data of the recently discovered powerful relativistic jets in Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies. The results are studied in the light of the known theories on the relativistic jets, indicating that while the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is sufficient to explain the power radiated by BL Lac Objects, it fails to completely account the power from quasars and Narrow-Line Seyfert 1. This favors the scenario outlined by Cavaliere & D'Elia of a composite jet, with a magnetospheric core plus a hydromagnetic component emerging as the accretion power increases and the disc becomes radiation-pressure dominated. A comparison with Galactic compact objects is also performed, finding some striking similarities, indicating that as the neutron stars are the low-mass jet systems analogue of black holes, the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies are the low-mass counterpart of the blazars., 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. The recent detection of gamma-ray emission from four radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies suggests that the engine driving the AGN activity of these objects share some similarities with that of blazars, namely the presence of a gamma-ray emitting, variable, jet of plasma closely aligned to the line of sight. In this work we analyze the gamma-ray light curves of the four radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies for which high-energy gamma-ray emission has been discovered by Fermi/LAT, in order to study their variability. We find significant flux variability in all the sources. This allows us to exclude a starburst origin of the gamma-ray photons and confirms the presence of a relativistic jet. Furthermore we estimate the minimum e-folding variability timescale (3 - 30 days) and infer an upper limit for the size of the emitting region (0.2 - 2 pc, assuming a relativistic Doppler factor delta=10 and a jet aperture of theta=0.1 rad).

We study the BL Lac objects detected in the one year all sky survey of the Fermi satellite, with a energy spectral slope alpha_gamma in the [0.1-100 GeV] band greater than 1.2. In the alpha_gamma vs gamma-ray luminosity plane, these BL Lacs occupy the region populated by Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). Studying the properties of their spectral energy distributions (SED) and of their emitting lines, we find that several of these BL Lacs have a SED similar to FSRQs and that they do have broad lines of large equivalent width, and should be reclassified as FSRQs even adopting the current phenomenological definition (i.e. equivalent width EW of the emitting line greater than 5 A). In other cases, even if the EW width is small, the emitting lines can be as luminous as in quasars, and again their SED is similar to the SED of FSRQs. Sources classified as BL Lacs with a SED appearing as intermediate between BL Lacs and FSRQs also have relatively weak broad emission lines and small EW, and can be considered as transition sources. These properties are confirmed also by model fitting, that allows to derive the relevant intrinsic jet parameters and the jet power. This study leads us to propose a physical distinction between the two classes of blazars, based on the luminosity of the broad line region measured in Eddington units. The dividing line is of the order of L_BLR/L_Edd ~ 5e-4, in good agreement with the idea that the presence of strong emitting lines is related to a transition in the accretion regime, becoming radiatively inefficient below a disk luminosity of the order of one per cent of the Eddington one.

We study the four BL Lac objects (RGB J0152+017, 1ES 0229+200, 1ES 0347-121 and PKS 0548-322) detected in the TeV band but not present in the 1FGL catalogue of the Fermi/Large Area Telescope. We analize the 24 months of LAT data deriving gamma-ray fluxes or upper limits that we use to assemble their spectral energy distributions (SED). We model the SEDs with a standard one-zone leptonic model, also including the contribution of the reprocessed radiation in the multi GeV band, emitted by the pairs produced through the conversion of the primary TeV emission by interaction with the cosmic optical-IR background. For simplicity, in the calculation of this component we adopt an analytical approach including some simplifying assumptions, in particular i) the blazar high energy emission is considered on average stable over times of the order of 10^7 years and ii) the observer is exactly on-axis. We compare the physical parameters derived by the emission model with those of other high-energy emitting BL Lacs, confirming that TeV BL Lacs with a rather small GeV flux are characterized by extremely low values of the magnetic field and large values of the electron energies. The comparison between the flux in the GeV band and that expected from the reprocessed TeV emission allows us to confirm and strengthen the lower limit of B >10^{-15} G for the intergalactic magnetic field using a theoretically motivated spectrum for the primary high-energy photons.

We report on a multiwavelength campaign for the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z= 0.5846) performed in 2010 July–September and triggered by a high-energy γ-ray outburst observed by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The peak flux in the 0.1–100 GeV energy band exceeded, for the first time in this type of source, the value of ~10^(−6) photon cm^(−2) s^(−1), corresponding to an observed luminosity of ~10^(48) erg s^(−1). Although the source was too close to the Sun position to organize a densely sampled follow-up, it was possible to gather some multiwavelength data that confirmed the state of high activity across the sampled electromagnetic spectrum. The comparison of the spectral energy distribution of the NLS1 PMN J0948+0022 with that of a typical blazar – such as 3C 273 – shows that the power emitted at γ-rays is extreme.

With the release of the first year Fermi catalogue, the number of blazars detected above 100 MeV lying at high redshift has been largely increased. There are 28 blazars at z>2 in the "clean" sample. All of them are Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). We study and model their overall spectral energy distribution in order to find the physical parameters of the jet emitting region, and for all of them we estimate their black hole masses and accretion rates. We then compare the jet with the accretion disk properties, setting these sources in the broader context of all the other bright gamma-ray or hard X-ray blazars. We confirm that the jet power correlates with the accretion luminosity. We find that the high energy emission peak shifts to smaller frequencies as the observed luminosity increases, according to the blazar sequence, making the hard X-ray band the most suitable for searching the most luminous and distant blazars.

In the early days of April 2010, the blazar 3C 454.3 (z = 0.859) underwent a strongγ−ray outburst, reaching fluxes (E > 100 MeV) in excess of 10 −5 ph cm −2 s −1 .The FermiGammaraySpaceTelescope performed a 200 ks long pointed observationstarting from 5 April 2010 19:38 UTC. This allowed us to try probing the variabilityof the γ−ray emission on time scales of hours or less. We found the variability ona few hours time scale. On sub-hour time scale we found no evidence of significantvariability,althoughthe presentstatistics is notyet conclusiveandfurther observationsare needed.Keywords: galaxies:quasars:individual: 3C 454.3– gamma-rays:galaxies– galaxies:jets 1 INTRODUCTIONBlazars are one type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) withrelativistic jet. The small viewing angle of the jet makes itpossible to observe strong effects of the special relativity,such as a boosting of the emitted power and a shorteningof the characteristic time scales. Although the variabilityin blazars has been observed at all the frequencies (see, forexample, the reviews by Ulrich et al. 1997 and Wagner 2008),the part at high energies deserves a specific interest, sincemost of the bolometric power of these sources is emitted atγ rays.The shortest time scales measured by the EGRET ex-periment onboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatoryare ∼ 4 hours for PKS 1622-29 (Mattox et al. 1997) and 8hours for 3C 279 (Wherle et al. 1998). Early results from theLarge Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the FermiGamma-raySpace Telescope (hereafter Fermi) indicated similar results:from about half-day for PKS 1454-354 (Abdo et al. 2009a)and PKS 1502+106 (Abdo et al. 2010a) to 5 − 6 hours inthe cases of 3C 454.3 and PKS B1510-089 (Tavecchio et al.2010) and 3C 273 (Abdo et al. 2010b).These time scales are in agreement with the commonparadigm that the characteristic spatial scale of the emittingregion is of the order of the gravitational radius r

We cross correlate the Fermi 11 months survey catalogue (1FGL) with the 20 GHz Australia Telescope Compact Array radio survey catalogue (AT20G) composed by 5890 sources at declination

We report simultaneous observations at different energy bands in radio, optical, UV, X-rays and $\gamma$ rays of the flat-spectrum radio-quasar 3C 345. We built the light curve of the source at different frequencies from 2008, the beginning of the \textit{Fermi} all-sky survey, to 2016, using new data and public archives. In particular we obtained several optical spectra, to study the behavior of emission lines and the continuum in different activity states and to derive the black hole mass. 3C 345 showed two flaring episodes in 2009, which occurred simultaneously in $\gamma$ ray, optical/UV and X-rays, and were later followed in radio. The source shows an inverse Compton dominated spectral energy distribution, which moved from higher to lower frequencies from the high to the low state. The reverberation of emission lines during one outburst event allowed us to constrain the location of production of $\gamma$ rays very close to the broad-line region, and possibly in the jet-base. We report the observation of an increased accretion after the outburst, possibly induced by the decrease of magnetic field intensity with respect to the low state., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We studied all blazars of known redshift detected by the Fermi satellite during its first three months survey. For the majority of them, pointed Swift observations ensures a good multiwavelength coverage, enabling us to to reliably construct their spectral energy distributions (SED). We model the SEDs using a one-zone leptonic model and study the distributions of the derived interesting physical parameters as a function of the observed gamma-ray luminosity. We confirm previous findings concerning the relation of the physical parameters with source luminosity which are at the origin of the blazar sequence. The SEDs allow to estimate the luminosity of the accretion disk for the majority of broad emitting line blazars, while for the line-less BL Lac objects in the sample upper limits can be derived. We find a positive correlation between the jet power and the luminosity of the accretion disk in broad line blazars. In these objects we argue that the jet must be proton-dominated, and that the total jet power is of the same order of (or slightly larger than) the disk luminosity. We discuss two alternative scenarios to explain this result.

It has been suggested that some radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 contain relativistic jets, on the basis of their flat-spectrum radio nuclei and studies on variability. We present preliminary results of an ongoing investigation of the X-ray and multiwavelength properties of 5 radio-loud NLS1 based on archival data from Swift and XMM-Newton. Some sources present interesting characteristics, very uncharacteristic for a radio-quiet narrow-line Seyfert 1, such as very hard X-ray spectra, and correlated optical and ultraviolet variability. However, none of the studied sources show conclusive evidence for relativistic jets. gamma-ray observations with Fermi are strongly recommended to definitely decide on the presence or not of relativistic jets., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Aims: We study the blazar nature of the high-redshift Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasar PKS 2149-306 (z = 2.345) by investigating its long-term behavior. Methods: We analyzed all publicly available optical-to-X-ray observations performed by XMM-Newton, Swift, and INTEGRAL. Conclusions: PKS 2149-306 is one of four blazars at z>2 that have been observed in the hard-X-ray regime with both the BAT and ISGRI instruments. Observations acquired almost 1 year apart in the 60-300 keV energy band in the object rest frame, exhibit no noticeable change in spectral slope associated with a flux variation of more than a factor of two. Swift data appear to show a roll-off below ~1 keV, which becomes increasingly evident during a ~3-day time-frame, that can be explained as the natural spectral break caused by the Inverse Compton onset. The broad-band spectra allow us to identify two different states. The SED modeling suggests that they can be interpreted by only a change in the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet., 7 pages, 2 figures. We report on an analysis of X- and $\gamma$-ray observations of PKS 1830-211, based on the long-term campaigns carried out by \emph{INTEGRAL} and COMPTEL. The \emph{INTEGRAL} data currently available present a $33\sigma$ significance detection in the 20-100 keV band, while the COMPTEL 6-years data provide a $5.2\sigma$ significance detection in the 1-3 MeV energy band. At hard X-rays, \emph{INTEGRAL} and supplementary \emph{SWIFT} observations show flux variability on timescales of months. At $\gamma$-rays, the source shows persistent emission over years. The hard X-ray spectrum is well represented by a power-law model, with $\Gamma \sim 1.3$ in the 20-250 keV band. This photon index is well consistent with the previous report of $\Gamma \sim 1.3$ obtained at $E > 3.5$ keV from the best fit of \emph{XMM-Newton} data with a broken power law model. The joint \emph{XMM-Newton}/\emph{INTEGRAL} spectrum presented here is then fit with a broken power-law model and the parameters are refined compared to the previous. The results show the photon index changes from $\sim 1.0$ to $\sim 1.3$ at a break energy $\sim 4$ keV. At MeV energies, the spectrum softens to $\Gamma \sim 2.2$. These results, together with the EGRET measurement at $E \ge 100$ MeV, constitute a broad-band spectrum containing the peak of the power output at MeV energies, similar to most high-luminosity $\gamma$-ray blazars. In July 2007, the blazar 3C 454.3 underwent a flare in the optical, reaching R~13 on July 19. Then the optical flux decreased by one magnitude, being R~14 when the source was detected by the gamma-ray satellite AGILE, that observed the source on July 24-30. At the same time, the Swift satellite performed a series of snapshots. We can construct the simultaneous spectral energy distribution using optical, UV, X-ray and gamma-ray data. These shows that an increased gamma-ray flux is accompanied by a weaker optical/X-ray flux with respect to the flare observed in the Spring 2005 by INTEGRAL and Swift. This confirms earlier suggestions about the behaviour of the jet of 3C 454.3.

We present the first X-ray observations of three sources belonging to a new AGN class: the naked AGNs. Based on optical spectroscopic studies, these sources appear as classical type 2 (obscured) AGNs, with only narrow emission lines. However, long-term optical monitoring campaigns, carried out over more than two decades, show that the same sources are strongly variable, like type 1 (un-obscured) AGNs. Based on short Chandra observations, the sources appear to be fairly bright in the X-rays, with typical Seyfert 1s values for the photon index (Gamma~1.8) and without significant intrinsic absorption, supporting the conclusion that some bright AGNs may genuinely lack a broad line region. Future, broad-band studies as well as deeper X-ray observations, probing both the spectral and the temporal properties of the naked AGNs, are crucial to shed light on the central engine of these sources, which may be representative of a large class of AGNs., 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present all the publicly available data, from optical/UV wavelengths (UVOT) to X-rays (XRT, BAT), obtained from Swift observations of the blazar PKS 2155-304, performed in response to the rapid alert sent out after the strong TeV activity (up to 17 Crab flux level at E > 200 GeV) at the end of July 2006. The X-ray flux increased by a factor of 5 in the 0.3-10 keV energy band and by a factor of 1.5 at optical/UV wavelengths, with roughly one day of delay. The comparison of the spectral energy distribution built with data quasi-simultaneous to the TeV detections shows an increase of the overall normalization with respect to archival data, but only a small shift of the frequency of the synchrotron peak that remains consistent with the values reported in past observations when the TeV activity was much weaker., 13 pages, 3 figures. We have selected SDSS J222032.50+002537.5 and SDSS J142048.01+120545.9 as best blazar candidates out of a complete sample of extremely radio-loud quasars at z>4, with highly massive black holes. We observed them and a third serendipitous candidate with similar features (PMN J2134-0419) in the X-rays with the Swift/XRT telescope, to confirm their blazar nature. We investigate the mid-infrared (mid-IR) properties of the largest (42 objects) sample of radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RL NLS1) collected to date, using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. We analyse the mid-IR colours of these objects and compare them to what is expected from different combinations of AGN and galaxy templates. We find that, in general, the host galaxy emission gives an important contribution to the observed mid-IR flux in particular at the longest wavelengths (W3, at 12 μm, and W4, at 22 μm). In about half of the sources (22 objects), we observe a very red mid-IR colour (W4 - W3 > 2.5) that can be explained only using a starburst galaxy template (M82). Using the 22 μm luminosities, corrected for the AGN contribution, we have then estimated the star formation rate (SFR) for 20 of these 'red' RL NLS1, finding values ranging from 10 to 500M⊙ yr-1. For the RLNLS1 showing bluer colours, instead, we cannot exclude the presence of a star-forming (SF) host galaxy although, on average, we expect a lower SFR. Studying the radio (1.4 GHz) to mid-IR (22 μm) flux ratios of the RL NLS1 in the sample, we found that in ~10 objects the SF activity could represent the most important component also at radio frequencies, in addition (or in alternative) to the relativistic jet. Blazars are astrophysical sources whose emission is dominated by non-thermal processes, typically interpreted as synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. Although the general picture is rather robust and consistent with observations, many aspects are still unexplored. Polarimetric monitoring can offer a wealth of information about the physical processes in blazars. Models with largely different physical ingredients can often provide almost indistinguishable predictions for the total flux, but usually are characterized by markedly different polarization properties. We explore, with a pilot study, the possibility to derive structural information about the emitting regions of blazars by means of a joint analysis of rapid variability of the total and polarized flux at optical wavelengths. Short timescale (from tens of seconds to a couple of minutes) optical linear polarimetry and photometry for two blazars, BL Lacertae and PKS 1424+240, was carried out with the PAOLO polarimeter at the 3.6m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. Several hours of almost continuous observations were obtained for both sources. Our intense monitoring allowed us to draw strongly different scenarios for BL Lacertae and PKS 1424+240, with the former characterized by intense variability on time-scales from hours to a few minutes and the latter practically constant in total flux. Essentially the same behavior is observed for the polarized flux and the position angle. The variability time-scales turned out to be as short as a few minutes, although involving only a few percent variation of the flux. The polarization variability time-scale is generally consistent with the total flux variability. Total and polarized flux appear to be essentially uncorrelated. We have conducted a multiwavelength survey of 42 radio loud narrow-1ine Seyfert 1 galaxies (RLNLS1s), selected by searching among all the known sources of this type and omitting those with steep radio spectra. We analyse data from radio frequencies to X-rays, and supplement these with information available from online catalogs and the literature in order to cover the full electromagnetic spectrum. This is the largest known multiwavelength survey for this type of source. We detected 90% of the sources in X-rays and found 17% at gamma rays. Extreme variability at high energies was also found, down to timescales as short as hours. In some sources, dramatic spectral and flux changes suggest interplay between a relativistic jet and the accretion disk. The estimated masses of the central black holes are in the range $\sim 10^{6-8}M_{\odot}$, smaller than those of blazars, while the accretion luminosities span a range from $\sim 0.01$ to $\sim 0.49$ times the Eddington limit, similar to those of quasars. The distribution of the calculated jet power spans a range from $\sim 10^{42.6}$ to $\sim 10^{45.6}$ erg s$^{-1}$, generally lower than quasars and BL Lac objects, but partially overlapping with the latter. Once normalised by the mass of the central black holes, the jet power of the three types of active galactic nuclei are consistent with each other, indicating the scalability of the jet. Despite the observational differences, the central engine of RLNLS1s is apparently quite similar to that of blazars. The historical difficulties in finding radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies might be due to their low power and to intermittent jet activity., 35 pages, 13 Figures, 9 Tables.
