Yield and different nut parameters were measured for two growing seasons on mature (28–29 years) trees of 11 pecan cultivars grown in an experimental orchard located in the Puglia Region, Southeastern Italy. ‘Shoshoni’ and ‘Shawnee’ pecan seedlings were inoculated with three truffle species (Tuber borchii—known as the ‘whitish truffle’, T. aestivum—called the ‘summer truffle’, and T. melanosporum—the common ‘Black truffle’) and investigated for six months. The level of ectomycorrhizal colonization was assessed 6 and 12 months after inoculation. Results indicated that ‘Wichita’, ‘Shoshoni’, and ‘Pawnee’ performed well in the pedoclimatic conditions of the area with a yield higher than 20 kg/tree and a kernel dry weight of ≅3 g. These preliminary yield results suggested that some pecan cultivars could deserve consideration for cultivation in the Puglia Region, whereas others with low yield and a stronger alternate bearing should not be considered. Plant height, number of leaves, chlorophyll content (expressed as a SPAD unit) and stem diameter partially indicated the increase in ecological fitness in truffles-inoculated plants. Successful mycorrhization indicated ‘Shoshoni’ and ‘Shawnee’ as suitable to establish ectomycorrhizal symbiosis with T. aestivum, T. borchii, and T. melanosporum cultivation under Puglia climatic conditions. The results also showed that the applied protocol was adequate to obtain healthy mycorrhized seedlings appropriate for commercialization and plantation for truffles production on pecan in the future.

In the present work, authors have demonstrated how a localized induction heat treatment can be advantageously applied, controlled and mechanically characterized on a specific part – i.e. on steel hose fittings for hydraulic applications. More specifically, the study shows how this specific type of heat treatment facilitates the acquisition of significant localization effects on mechanical properties, and how such a treatment could act as a powerful tool for material optimization in diverse applications. The instrumented micro-indentation test was adopted as the investigation method for mechanical characterization and, due to the reduced amount of material required for the test, has the double advantage of retrieving potential spatial gradients of the mechanical properties without causing permanent damage to the entirety of analyzed parts. The measurement of both the Vickers hardness and plastic work required to make the indentation that would be necessary to quantify the strength and ductility capability of the parts’ material. In addition, a customized tensile test, based on the strains measurement obtained through an optical full-field method – i.e. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) – was developed with the aim of identifying and quantifying the correlation between the material properties attainable through a conventional tensile test and those measured by the instrumented micro-indentation test. Finally, it was demonstrated that the proposed customized tensile test, due to the localized heat treatment, is capable of retrieving potential spatial gradients of material properties.

The relationships between pedogenetic processes and fluvial-coastal dynamics in the Po Plain have been reconstructed through sedimentological analysis and correlation of ca. 170 core data chronologically constrained by 376 radiocarbon dates. Vertically stacked, weakly developed paleosols within Upper Pleistocene and Holocene mud-prone strata testify to intermittent pedogenesis, periodically interrupted by overbank sedimentation. Individual paleosols are laterally traceable for tens of km and exhibit A-Bk-Bw, A-Bk or A-Bw profiles. Strati graphically ordered 14C calibrated ages from A organo-mineral horizons testify to slow aggradation during 4-6 thousand years-long exposure periods. Burial ages, with an error of few centuries, are provided by plant debris at the top of A horizons.Millennial-scale climate oscillations and glacio-eustasy are the main drivers of the pedo-sedimentary evolution of the area during the last 50 kyr. Upper Pleistocene paleosols (P1-P3) developed in well-drained floodplain environments, during relatively warm periods.Paleosol burial occurred during colder phases. High-sediment supply during the Last Glacial Maximum hindered pedogenesis and led to the accumulation of 3-10 m-thick overbank strata. Widespread soil development (paleosol PH) occurred at the end of Last Glacial Maximum, following the retreat of Alpine glaciers and the afforestation of Apennine drainage basins. At distal locations, paleosol PH was progressively buried under estuarine sediments during the Holocene phases of post-glacial sea level rise. Beyond the area of marine influence, burial ages of paleosol PH change from a place to another without specific spatial trends and reflect upstream fluvial sedimentation dominated by avulsions and deposition of spatially restricted alluvial units. Holocene (H1-H2) paleosols show a poor correlation potential and laterally variable degree of maturity that reflect avulsive sedimentation patterns and crevassing. This paper provides insights on the timing and mechanisms of formation and burial of weakly-developed paleosols. The outcomes of this research are applicable to similar Quaternary alluvial systems, and may help interpreting ancient paleosolbearing successions.

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has triggered the disruption of health care on a global scale. With Italy tangled up in the pandemic response, oncology care has been largely diverted and cancer screenings suspended. Our multicenter Italian study aimed to evaluate whether COVID-19 has impacted access to diagnosis, staging, and treatment for patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC), compared with pre-pandemic time. Methods All consecutive new CRC patients referred to 8 Italian oncology institutions between March and December 2020 were included. Access rate and temporal intervals between date of symptoms onset, radiological and cytohistological diagnosis, treatment start and first radiological evaluation were analyzed and compared with the same months of 2019. Results A reduction (29%) in newly diagnosed CRC cases was seen when compared with 2019 (360 vs 506). New CRC patients in 2020 were less likely to be diagnosed with early stage (stages I-II-III) CRC (63% vs 78%, P < .01). Gender and sidedness were similar regardless of the year. The percentage of tumors with any mutation among BRAF, NRAS, and KRAS genes were significantly different between the 2 years (61% in 2020 vs 50% in 2019, P = .04). Timing of access to cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment for patients with CRC has not been negatively affected by the pandemic. Significantly shorter temporal intervals were observed between symptom onset and first oncological appointment (69 vs 79 days, P = .01) and between histological diagnosis and first oncological appointment (34 vs 42 days, P < .01) during 2020 compared with 2019. Fewer CRC cases were discussed in multidisciplinary meetings during 2020 (38% vs 50%, P = .01). Conclusions Our data highlight a significant drop in CRC diagnosis after COVID-19, especially for early stage disease. The study also reveals a remarkable setback in the multidisciplinary management of patients with CRC. Despite this, Italian oncologists were able to ensure diagnostic–therapeutic pathways proper operation after March 2020.

Framed into a robust stratigraphic context, multivariate analyses on the Holocene palaeobiological record (pollen, benthic foraminifers, ostracods) of the Po coastal plain (NE Italy) allowed the investigation of microtidal ecosystems variability and driving parameters along a 35-km-long land–sea transect. Millennial-scale ecosystem shifts are documented by coeval changes in the meiofauna, reflecting variations in organic matter–water depth (shallow-marine environments) and degree of confinement-salinity (back-barrier settings). In-phase shifts of vegetation communities track unsteady water-table levels and river dynamics in freshwater palustrine areas. Five environmental–ecological stages followed one another crossing four tipping points that mark changes in relative sea level (RSL), climate and/or fluvial regime. At the culmination of Mediterranean RSL rise, after the 8200 event, remarkable growth of peatlands took place in the Po estuary, while low accumulation rates typified the shelf. At the transgressive–regressive turnaround (~7000 cal a bp), the estuary turned into a delta plain with tidally influenced interdistributary embayments. River flow regime oscillations after the Climate Optimum (post-5000 cal a bp) favoured isolation of the bays and the development of brackish wetlands surrounded by wooded peatlands. The youngest threshold (~800 cal a bp), which led to the establishment of the modern delta, reflects a major avulsion of the Po River.

The filamentous fungus Aphanocladium album is known as a hyperparasite of plant pathogenic fungi; hence, it has been studied as a possible agent for plant protection. Chitinases secreted by A. album have proven to be essential for its fungicidal activity. However, no complete analysis of the A. album chitinase assortment has been carried out, nor have any of its chitinases been characterized yet. In this study, we report the first draft assembly of the genome sequence of A. album (strain MX-95). The in silico functional annotation of the genome allowed the identification of 46 genes encoding chitinolytic enzymes of the GH18 (26 genes), GH20 (8 genes), GH75 (8 genes), and GH3 (4 genes) families. The encoded proteins were investigated by comparative and phylogenetic analysis, allowing clustering in different subgroups. A. album chitinases were also characterized according to the presence of different functional protein domains (carbohydrate-binding modules and catalytic domains) providing the first complete description of the chitinase repertoire of A. album. A single chitinase gene was then selected for complete functional characterization. The encoded protein was expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris, and its activity was assayed under different conditions of temperature and pH and with different substrates. It was found that the enzyme acts mainly as a chitobiosidase, with higher activity in the 37–50 °C range.

The choice of the proper restorative material is essential for the long-term success of implant-supported rehabilitations. This study aimed to analyze and compare the mechanical properties of four different types of commercial abutment materials for implant-supported restorations. These materials included: lithium disilicate (A), translucent zirconia (B), fiber-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) (C), and ceramic-reinforced polyether ether ketone (PEEK) (D). Tests were carried out under combined bending–compression conditions, which involved applying a compressive force tilted with respect to the abutment axis. Static and fatigue tests were performed on two different geometries for each material, and the results were analyzed according to ISO standard 14801:2016. Monotonic loads were applied to measure static strength, whereas alternating loads with a frequency of 10 Hz and a runout of 5 × 106 cycles were applied for fatigue life estimation, corresponding to five years of clinical service. Fatigue tests were carried out with a load ratio of 0.1 and at least four load levels for each material, and the peak value of the load levels was reduced accordingly in subsequent levels. The results showed that the static and fatigue strengths of Type A and Type B materials were better than those of Type C and Type D. Moreover, the fiber-reinforced polymer material, Type C, showed marked material–geometry coupling. The study revealed that the final properties of the restoration depended on manufacturing techniques and the operator’s experience. The findings of this study can be used to inform clinicians’ choice of restorative materials for implant-supported rehabilitation, considering factors such as esthetics, mechanical properties, and cost.

Most of the researches published on the numerical modeling of laser welding are looking at similar welding, mainly due to the difficulty of simulating the mixing phenomenon that occurs in dissimilar welding. Furthermore, numerical modeling of dissimilar laser welding of titanium and nickel alloys has been rarely reported in the literature. In this study, a 3D finite volume numerical model is proposed to simulate fluid flow, heat, and mass transfer for similar and dissimilar laser welding of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718. The laser source was simulated by volumetric heat distribution, which considers the effects of keyhole and heat transfer on the workpiece. The heat source parameters were calibrated through preliminary experiments, by comparing the simulated and experimental weld pool shapes and dimensions. The model was used to simulate both homogenous and dissimilar laser weldings of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718, and a systematic comparison was carried out through a number of selected experiments. The effects of three distinct levels of laser power (1.25 kW, 1.5 kW, 2.5 kW) on temperature distribution and velocity field in the welds pool were analyzed. Results highlighted the effects of Marangoni forces in the weld pool formation. Furthermore, in order to analyze the mass transfer phenomenon in dissimilar welding, species transfer equations were considered, demonstrating the important role played by the mass mixture in the weld pool formation. Finally, a high level of agreement between simulations and experiments—in terms of weld pool shape and dimensions—was observed in all cases analyzed. This proves the ability of the proposed numerical model to properly simulate both the similar and dissimilar welding of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718 alloys.

PurposeTo quantify the effect of negative pressure applied to the anterior surface of the eye on absolute IOP.SubjectsParticipants, and/or Controls. Three eyes from three research-consented brain-dead organ donors.MethodsAir-tight goggles connected to a negative pressure (NP) pump (Mercury Multi-pressure Dial (MPD); Equinox Ophthalmic, Inc., CA) were tested on three research consented brain-dead organ donors. The MPD was set to generate a vacuum of −20mmHg. A baseline IOP of 10, 20, and 30mmHg was sequentially set by adjusting the height of a balanced salt solution bottle connected to the cornea through a 20G needle. IOP was manually annotated at time = 0s, right before turning on the vacuum pump; after a few seconds with the vacuum pump ON; at 60s; at 120s, right before turning the pump OFF; at 240s with the pump OFF (recovery). Three repetitions per each test at varying baseline IOP were taken for a total of nine series of measures per eye.MainOutcomeMeasuresIOP change with exposure to NP.ResultsEye1 and 3 showed an immediate reduction in IOP at all baselines immediately following activation of the MPD NP pump; Eye2 showed an opposite response to NP. Eye1 and 3 showed a reduction in IOP at all baselines with NP pump ON for 60s and 120s, while Eye 2 showed a consistent increase in IOP. After 120s from turning NP OFF (time=240s), IOP partially recovered to its baseline in all eyes.ConclusionsThis study is the first to evaluate changes in manometrically-measured intracameral IOP due to NP applied to the ocular surface in living conditions. The inconsistent response of IOP following exposure to negative pressure warrants further investigations on the mechanism underlaying IOP lowering by NP.

We present a novel database of environmental and geological 87Sr/86Sr values (n = 1920) from Italy, using literature data and newly analysed samples, for provenance purposes. We collected both bioavailable and non-bioavailable (i.e. rocks and bulk soils) data to attain a broader view of the Sr isotope variability of the Italian peninsula. These data were used to build isotope variability maps, namely isoscapes, through Kriging interpolations. We employed two different Kriging models, namely Ordinary Kriging and Universal Kriging, with a geolithological map of Italy categorized in isotope classes as external predictor. Model performances were evaluated through a 10-fold cross validation, yielding accurate 87Sr/86Sr predictions with root mean squared errors (RMSE) ranging between 0.0020 and 0.0024, dependent on the Kriging model and the sample class. Overall, the produced maps highlight a heterogeneous distribution of the 87Sr/86Sr across Italy, with the highest radiogenic values (>0.71) mainly localized in three areas, namely the Alps (Northern Italy), the Tuscany/Latium (Central Italy) and Calabria/Sicily (Southern Italy) magmatic/metamorphic terrains. The rest of the peninsula is characterized by values ranging between 0.707 and 0.710, mostly linked to sedimentary geological units of mixed nature. Finally, we took advantage of the case study of Fratta Polesine, to underscore the importance of choosing appropriate samples when building the local isoscape and of exploring different end-members when interpreting the local Sr isotope variability in mobility and provenance studies. Our user-friendly maps and database are freely accessible through the Geonode platform and will be updated over time to offer a state-of-the-art reference in mobility and provenance studies across the Italian landscape.

Peat horizons are characteristic features of delta plains worldwide. In this study, we tested the use of peat-based correlations to assess the deformation of Holocene strata in the Po coastal plain (Northern Italy). The Holocene stratigraphy, about 30km inland from the modern coastline consists of a peat-bearing, estuarine and deltaic succession, up to 23m thick. Through the analysis of 31 core data and 100 piezocone penetration tests, we identified and mapped three 10–40cm-thick peat layers (T1–T3) dated to 6.6–5.8, 5.5–5.0 and 3.3–2.7cal kyr BP respectively. These peat horizons were found to be suitable stratigraphic markers within the Holocene succession over an area of about 200km2. The mid-late Holocene palaeogeography, reconstructed through high-resolution peat correlation, supported by 72 radiocarbon dates, highlights a typical upper delta plain environment, with ribbon-shaped distributary channels and swamp interdistributary areas. Peat layers are inclined towards E-NE with gradients that increase downsection from ~0.016% (T3) to 0.021% (T1). The gradient of the oldest peat horizon is one order of magnitude larger than the slope of the modern delta plain (~0.0025%). We infer that peat horizons accumulated during periods of low sediment supply mainly controlled by autogenic processes and were deformed after deposition. Differential compaction of underlying sedimentary strata and recent tectonic activity of the buried Apenninic thrust systems are the most likely drivers of strata deformation. Based on isochore maps, we document that higher sedimentation rates in topographically depressed areas compensated, in part at least, the ongoing deformation, keeping unaltered the topographic gradient and the depositional environment. This study demonstrates that peat-based correlation and mapping can shed lights on the mechanisms of strata accumulation and deformation in deltaic settings, constituting a robust basis for reconstructing delta evolution.

Meat represents an important protein source, even in developing countries, but its production is scarcely sustainable, and its excessive consumption poses health issues. An increasing number of Western consumers would replace, at least partially, meat with alternative protein sources. This review aims at: (i) depicting nutritional, functional, sensory traits, and critical issues of single-cell proteins (SCP), filamentous fungi, microalgae, vegetables (alone or mixed with milk), and insects and (ii) displaying how fermentation could improve their quality, to facilitate their use as food items/ingredients/supplements. Production of SCP (yeasts, filamentous fungi, microalgae) does not need arable land and potable water and can run continuously, also using wastes and byproducts. Some filamentous fungi are also consumed as edible mushrooms, and others are involved in the fermentation of traditional vegetable-based foods. Cereals, pseudocereals, and legumes may be combined to offer an almost complete amino acid profile. Fermentation of such vegetables, even in combination with milk-based products (e.g., tarhana), could increase nutrient concentrations, including essential amino acids, and improve sensory traits. Different insects could be used, as such or, to increase their acceptability, as ingredient of foods (e.g., pasta). Changes in land use represent, after fossil-fuel combustion, the greatest cause of greenhouse-gases emission into the atmosphere. Coastal wetlands, also referred as coastal blue carbon ecosystems (e.g. salt marshes, mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, swamps), represent one of the most powerful C sinks among the Earth’s ecosystems, being capable to sequester organic carbon (OC) at rates ca. 30-50 times higher than terrestrial forests. Historically, land reclamation for agriculture, farming and urban expansion, severely impacted coastal wetlands, causing their loss and degradation. Wetlands drainage lead to the oxidation of organic matter previously stored under anaerobic conditions and the release of CO2 into the atmosphere. Only recently the critical role of blue carbon ecosystems in climate-change mitigation has been recognised, highlighting the importance of protecting and studying these precious environments.In this work, changes in land use in the last two centuries are reconstructed through comparison with historical maps. At the beginning of the 19th century Napoleon Bonaparte requested the development of high-quality maps of occupied territories. Among these, the so-called ‘Carta del Ferrarese’ (CdF), completed between 1812 and 1814, is composed of 38 sheets and represents, to a scale of 1:15.000, 240.000 hectares of the Po lowlands, roughly corresponding to the present-day Ferrara district. The CdF, archived at the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna, is an extraordinary example among historical maps for its high quality and accuracy, which constitute a two-centuries-old reliable paleo-landscape picture.Within the Historical Land Use Change research project, leaded by the Emilia-Romagna Statistical and GIS Service, the CdF was scanned, accurately georeferenced and orthorectified, showing a surprising generalized match with recent maps. More than 31.000 polygons were digitized in a GIS environment and interpreted on the basis of the European Corine Land Cover codes, properly modified for the land uses at the time.Comparison with the recent land use analysis, carried out in 2014, highlights changes in land use, mainly related to land reclamation. Salt marshes and swamps, originally extended for 100.000 hectares, were reduced of about 85%, starting from 1861. Major phases of land reclamation occurred in 1870s and 1960s. Geochemical analyses on shallow samples (depth < 50 cm), depict OC content of artificially drained soils < 5% of the total volume. Soil texture testifies to the almost complete mineralization of OC after reclamation. Only recently drained soils show higher OC content, in the range of 10-15%.

Mid-Late Holocene stratigraphy beneath the town of Bologna, in northern Italy, records an upward increase in the amount, thickness, width and connectivity of anthropogenic deposits and a parallel decrease in alluvial sediments. Anthropogenic deposits, spanning from the Neolithic to the Present, occur at three stratigraphic intervals separated by alluvial strata.The lower interval, dated to the Neolithic-Early Eneolithic, includes sparse lithic, ceramic and copper artefacts, post holes, charcoals, shallow wells and ditches. These evidences of human presence are scattered along a pedogenized horizon developed during a phase of river stability lasting more than 3 millennia. Early Eneolithic rests are aligned along paleo river courses.The second horizon consists of an uninterrupted archaeological sequence spanning from the Late Bronze Age to the Late Antiquity. Late Bronze and Iron Age remains include ceramic and metal artefacts, charcoals, huts, dwellings, wells, ditches, and cemetery sites. Iron age remains are pervasive and their distribution is irrespective of riverbed location. The elevated number of dwellings and cremation jars testifies to a significant local population growth. A dense grid of ditches and embankments denotes a widespread control of the drainage network. Roman deposits include large dwellings, public buildings, productive sites, wells, aqueducts, ditches, landfills, roads, bridges, cemetery sites. Romans introduced in the geological record huge amounts of anthropogenic materials with high preservation potential such as bricks and mortars. Large quantities of different rock types were imported from European and Mediterranean areas. These materials constitute a laterally continuous horizon buried at depth of 3-4 metres, which testifies to the development the colony of Bononia, founded in 189 BC. The amount and connectivity of roman rests, decreases away from the historical centre, where large farms, reclaimed lands and centuriae highlight an anthropogenically modified rural landscape. Fluvial gravels deposited since the Roman period are commonly enriched in brick clasts.The uppermost anthropogenic interval is dated to the last millennia. Its base is a time-transgressive erosional surface which testifies to the progressive expansion of the Bologna urban area, with a minor pulse dated to Middle Ages (1200-1300 AD) and a major to the last 70 years. Particularly, in the 20th century the urban area of Bologna became 20 times larger and merged with adjacent villages. Post-1950 deposits are up-to-30 m thick and deeply cut into older stratigraphic units. Concrete, metal, and plastic are the most abundant materials. The last 70 years also record the spread of pollutants within shallow acquifers and dramatically increased subsidence rates due to water withdrawal.Anthropogenic deposits beneath Bologna record an overall upward transition from a river-dominated to a man-dominated environment. Iron Age and Roman deposits represent the first evidence of a landscape heavily modelled by human activities. However, the thickness, lateral extent and pervasiveness of post-1950 anthropogenic units support the recently proposed idea to place the base of the Anthropocene in the mid-20th century.

Weakly developed paleosols from two distinct interfluve surfaces of Late Pleistocene age provide excellent keys to high-resolution stratigraphic correlation and may serve to trace large-scale genetic packages (systems tract equivalents) across the continental portion of the Po Basin. Twenty-four paleosol profiles from 17 sediment cores were identified and characterized for bulk-geochemical analysis. X-ray fluorescence data were used to trace the degree of weathering. Paleosols, 0.5–1.5 m thick, are pedogenically altered floodplain deposits, developed over time spans of a few thousand of years and mostly partitioned into A-Bk horizons. The most notable paleosol features are dark, organic-matter-rich and carbonate-free mineral surface horizons (A) that overlie bright calcic horizons (Bk) typified by the accumulation of secondary carbonates in the form of pedogenic nodules. Paleosol profiles exhibit a homogeneous geochemical signature that fingerprints a moderate degree of weathering, with little strike- and dip-oriented variability across the different study localities. Plots of Al-normalized calcification and base loss indices against depth reveal systematic increasing values from intensely altered A horizons to underlying Bk horizons. These trends reflect consistent patterns of Ca translocation from surface horizons deeper into the profile, with significant to almost complete Ca removal from A horizons through leaching and accumulation in Bk horizons. Selected trace element ratios (Ba/Sr, Rb/Sr), redox-sensitive trace elements and Zr contents display opposite, up-profile increasing trends that reflect Sr loss in A horizons, with selective Zr concentration in residual minerals. Vertical trends in element ratios are laterally extensive and consistent on a regional basis and represent key pedochemical/stratigraphic markers that can be traced over great distances (tens of kms) throughout the inland portion of the basin. Through quantitative assessment of the degree of weathering, geochemical profiling provides high potential for robust subsurface paleosol correlation that might not be captured by visual core descriptions alone.

Despite increased application of subsurface datasets below the limits of seismic resolution, reconstructing near-surface deformation of shallow key stratigraphic markers beneath modern alluvial and coastal plains through sediment core analysis has received little attention. Highly resolved stratigraphy of Upper Pleistocene to Holocene (Marine Isotope Stage 5e to Marine Isotope Stage 1) alluvial, deltaic and coastal depositional systems across the southern Po Plain, down to 150 m depth, provides an unambiguous documentation on the deformation of previously flat-lying strata that goes back in time beyond the limits of morphological, historical and palaeoseismic records. Five prominent key horizons, accurately selected on the basis of their sedimentological characteristics and typified for their fossil content, were used as highly effective stratigraphic markers (M1 to M5) that can be tracked for tens of kilometres across the basin. A facies-controlled approach tied to a robust chronology (102 radiocarbon dates) reveals considerable deformation of laterally extensive nearshore (M1), continental (M2 and M3) and lagoon (M4 and M5) marker beds originally deposited in a horizontal position (M1, M4 and M5). The areas where antiformal geometries are best observed are remarkably coincident with the axes of buried ramp anticlines, across which new seismic images reveal substantially warped stratal geometries of Lower Pleistocene strata. The striking spatial coincidence of fold crests with the epicentres of historic and instrumental seismicity suggests that deformation of marker beds M1 to M5 might reflect, in part at least, syntectonically generated relief and, thus, active tectonism. Precise identification and lateral tracing of chronologically constrained stratigraphic markers in the(14)C time window through combined sedimentological and palaeoecological data may delineate late Quaternary subsurface stratigraphic architecture at an unprecedented level of detail, outlining cryptic stratal geometries at the sub-seismic scale. Using an interdisciplinary law and computer science approach, this article argues that quantum computing must push lawmakers to implement more dynamic privacy regulation to cushion quantum computing's impact on data protection and privacy. This article highlights the EU GDPR position as the global standard for data protection and privacy regulation. The GDPR has ignited a legal standardization phenomenon, whereby many jurisdictions are shaping their privacy regulation based on the GDPR. A move by EU lawmakers to amend the GDPR to embed post-quantum encryption requirements dynamically would ignite a global paradigm shift. This would result in forward-looking protection of data subjects' rights that extends beyond quantum computing perils. It would also signal that lawmakers' intention to making privacy regulation dynamic, thus enabling it to cope with future threats by being ahead of the technological disruption curve.

Large volumes of peatland deposits characterise the Holocene stratigraphy of the Po Plain. A combination of sedimentological and pollen-based paleoenvironmental analyses enables recognition and stratigraphic correlation of small-scale (2–5 m thick) packages of peat-bearing strata, stacked rhythmically in a retrogradational to progradational set and bounded by chronostratigraphically significant surfaces. Across these repetitive lithofacies successions, the proportion of facies-controlled palynomorphs is used as a diagnostic signature to characterise marine flooding surface equivalents (helophytes and hydrophytes) and shoaling-upward (terrestrialization) trends (trees and mesophilous herbs) that record systematic variations in groundwater table associated with increasing/decreasing accommodation. Paludification surfaces at the base of peats delineate the updip (freshwater) equivalents of brackish/marine flooding surfaces recognized at seaward locations atop peat layers (give-up transgressive surfaces). Peat beds exhibit maximum thickness in aggradational strata of the lowermost highstand systems tract, above the maximum flooding surface (MFS). An extrinsic control due to eustatic rise can be inferred for peat development in transgressive deposits: peats, in particular, reveal warmer climates at flooding surfaces (specifically around the MFS) that invariably coincide with rapid shifts to deeper depositional environments. Under highstand conditions, autogenic mechanisms affected base-level changes in the paralic swamps. At this stratigraphic level, peat-bearing strata primarily reflect subtle changes in accommodation due to distributary-channel avulsion, subsidence, and peat autocompaction. Detailed patterns of Holocene peat distribution on millennial timescales can help decipher multiple high-resolution accommodation cycles developed in the rock record on sub-seismic scales, resulting in an improved stratigraphic analysis and prediction of chronologically less constrained non-marine successions.

The ability to produce distributed sensors by tailoring materials readily available on the market is becoming an emerging strategy for Internet of Things applications. Embedding sensors into functional substrates allows one to reduce costs and improve integration and gives unique functionalities inaccessible to silicon or other conventional materials used in microelectronics. In this paper, we demonstrate the functionalization of a commercial polyurethane (PU) foam with the conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS: the resulting material is a modified all-polymeric foam where the internal network of pores is uniformly coated with a continuous layer of PEDOT:PSS acting as a mechanical transducer. When an external force causes a modification of the foam microstructure, the conductivity of the device varies accordingly, enabling the conversion of a mechanical pressure into an electric signal. The sensor provides a nearly linear response when stimulated by an external pressure in the range between 0.1 and 20 kPa. Frequency-dependent measurements show a useful frequency range up to 20 Hz. A simple micromechanical model has been proposed to predict the device performance based on the characteristics of the system, including geometrical constrains, the microstructure of the polymeric foam, and its elastic modulus. By taking advantage of the simulation output, a flexible shoe in sole prototype has been developed by embedding eight pressure sensors into a commercial PU foam. The proposed device may provide critical information to medical teams, such as the real-time bodyweight distribution and a detailed representation of the walking dynamic.
