Abstract

Positron lifetime, Photoluminescence and Hall measurements were performed to study undoped p-type gallium antimonide materials. A 314ps lifetime component, attributed to $V_{Ga}$ related defect, was identified in the positron lifetime measurement. In the PL measurement, a $778meV$ and a $797meV$ peaks were observed. Isochronal annealing studies were performed and at the temperature of $300^{o}C$, both the 314ps positron lifetime component and the two PL signals disappeared, which gives a clear and strong evidence for their correlation. However, the hole concentration ($\sim 2\times 10^{17}cm^{-3}$) was observed to be constant throughout the whole annealing temperature range up to $500^{o}C$. Contradictory to general belief, this implies, at least for samples with annealing temperatures above $300^{o}C$, the Ga vacancy is not the acceptor responsible for the p-type conduction., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Background: Skills such as planning and problem solving that are required in self‐determination can be cognitively demanding. It has not yet been examined whether executive functions and intelligence are associated with levels of self‐determination in individuals with intellectual disability (ID), and how that is related to quality of life (QoL). This study examined the associations among executive functions, intelligence, self‐determination, and QoL in adolescents with ID. Methods: Seventy‐nine adolescents aged between 17 and 20 years with mild ID participated in the study. Executive functions were assessed by experimental tasks. Non‐verbal IQ and survey data regarding QoL and self‐determination capacity were collected from the participants. Results: In a regression model with QoL as the dependent variable, only executive planning and self‐determination capacity (but not working memory, inhibition and IQ) were significant predictors of QoL. Two mediation models were tested based on the hypotheses, literature and current findings. Model 1 revealed that executive planning had a negative direct effect on QoL when the mediator, self‐determination capacity, was held constant. Model 2 indicated that the significant association between self‐determination and QoL was not mediated by executive planning. Conclusions: The findings highlighted the crucial significance of self‐determination, in comparison with executive functions and intelligence, for improving the QoL in adolescents with ID. Importantly, higher executive planning skill was even associated with lower QoL if self‐determination was not concurrently strengthened. These findings carry implications for the design of education and intervention programmes aimed at improving QoL of adolescents with ID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cognitive impairment is common in bipolar disorder and is emerging as a therapeutic target to enhance quality of life and function. A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, PsycInfo, Cochrane, clinicaltrials.gov, and Embase databases for blinded or open-label randomized controlled trials evaluating the pro-cognitive effects of pharmacological, neurostimulation, or psychological interventions for bipolar disorder. Twenty-two trials were identified, evaluating a total of 16 different pro-cognitive interventions. The methodological quality of the identified trials were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Currently, no intervention (i.e., pharmacologic, neurostimulation, cognitive remediation) has demonstrated robust and independent pro-cognitive effects in adults with bipolar disorder. Findings are preliminary and methodological limitations limit the interpretation of results. Methodological considerations including, but not limited to, the enrichment with populations with pre-treatment cognitive impairment, as well as the inclusion of individuals who are in remission are encouraged. Future trials may also consider targeting interventions to specific cognitive subgroups and the use of biomarkers of cognitive function.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite microplates were synthesised by the Sol-Gel method using a mixture of calcium nitrate and potassium phosphate. The reaction took place at room temperature for 48 h, 300, 400, 500 and 600°C calcination temperatures were made in order to study the effect of this temperature on the growth and morphology of the nanostructures. Crystalline composition, functional groups and surface morphology were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Hydroxyapatite microplates with average dimensions of 40 μm × 13 μm was obtained, the morphology of the surface is well defined in the form of a plate composed of a large number of small nanofibers. According to the studies by XRD, preferential orientations in the directions (200) and (002) were observed which is attributed to the conditions of synthesis.

Abstract

We report traveling-wave amplifiers having 1-112 GHz bandwidth with 7 dB gain, and 1-157 GHz bandwidth with 5 dB gain. A third amplifier exhibited 5 dB gain and a 180-GHz high-frequency cutoff. The amplifiers were fabricated in a 0.1-[[micro]meter] gate length InGaAs/InAlAs HEMT MIMIC technology. The use of gate-line capacitive-division, cascode gain cells and low-loss elevated coplanar waveguide lines have yielded record bandwidth broad-band amplifiers. Abstract

Molecular biological techniques were used to characterize the activity of G-beta-gamma-sensitive PI3K using cultured Sf9 insect cells and U937 mammalian cells as host systems. The findings showed that p120 and p101 which are proteins that comprise PI3Ks bind tightly to each other, both in vivo and in vitro. p101 was observed to amplify the effect of G-beta-gamma on the catalytic activity of the PI3K's p120 component from less than 2-fold to greater than 100-fold.

Abstract

Language identification (“LI”) is the problem of determining the natural language that a document or part thereof is written in. Automatic LI has been extensively researched for over fifty years. Today, LI is a key part of many text processing pipelines, as text processing techniques generally assume that the language of the input text is known. Research in this area has recently been especially active. This article provides a brief history of LI research, and an extensive survey of the features and methods used in the LI literature. We describe the features and methods using a unified notation, to make the relationships between methods clearer. We discuss evaluation methods, applications of LI, as well as off-the-shelfLI systems that do not require training by the end user. Finally, we identify open issues, survey the work to date on each issue, and propose future directions for research in LI.

Abstract

Background: The knowledge of variables influencing hospital efficiency is of paramount importance to carry out initiatives of management improvement and optimization. Aim: To explore on the hospital technical efficiency factors. Material and Methods: Data from 255,439 hospital discharges from 28 hospitals from May to October 2011 were analyzed. The efficiency index developed by Santelices et al was calculated. Proxy variables of hospital practices, human resource productivity, strategic performance, financing mechanisms, geographical territory and specialization, were considered. The analysis was carried out estimating econometric models. Results: The most significant variables to explain efficiency are the length of stay adjusted by complexity, the discharges per nurse and midwife and the performance of the Hospital Balancea Score Card. Conclusions: The suggested analysis contributes to identify hospital efficiency causes. The results suggest ways to improve performance of hospitals.

Abstract

Background: Germline mutation screening of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes is performed in suspected familial breast cancer cases, but a causative mutation is found in only 30% of patients. The development of additional methods to identify good candidates for BRCA1 and BRCA2 analysis would therefore increase the efficacy of diagnostic mutation screening. With this in mind, we developed a study to determine molecular signatures of BRCA1—or BRCA2—mutated breast cancers. Materials and Methods: Array-cgh (comparative genomic hybridization) and transcriptomic analysis were performed on a series of 103 familial breast cancers. The series included 7 breast cancers with a BRCA1 mutation and 5 breast cancers with a BRCA2 mutation. The remaining 91 cases were obtained from 73 families selected on the basis of at least 3 affected first-degree relatives or at least 2 affected first-degree relatives with breast cancer at an average age of 45 years. Array-cgh analyses were performed on a 4407 BAC-array (CIT-V8) manufactured by IntegraGen. Transcriptomic analyses were performed using an Affymetrix Human Genome U133 Plus 2.0 chip. Results: Using supervised clustering analyses we identified two transcriptomic signatures: one for BRCA1-mutated breast cancers consisting of 600 probe sets and another for BRCA2-mutated breast cancers also consisting of 600 probes sets. We also defined cgh-array signatures, based on the presence of specific genomic rearrangements, one for BRCA1-mutated breast cancers and one for BRCA2-mutated breast cancers. Conclusions: This study identified molecular signatures of breast cancers with BRCA1 or BRCA2 germline mutations. Genes present in these signatures could be exploited to find new markers for such breast cancers. We also identified specific genomic rearrangements in these breast cancers, which could be screened for in a diagnostic setting using fluorescence in situ hybridization, thus improving patient selection for BRCA1 and BRCA2 molecular genetic analysis.

Abstract

The authors report a case of persistent endometrial stromal tumour during two consecutive pregnancies. The diagnosis of endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is difficult by fragmented tissue. There were a total of 19 reported cases of pregnancy after conservative management of endometrial stromal sarcoma. Monitoring of disease during pregnancy is challenging, although most patients remain in a stable condition with a follow-up duration of 2-60 months. Although the present patient had a favorable disease outcome despite having co-existing ESS sustained throughout two term pregnancies, the current evidence on the safety of this approach is still scarce and thorough counseling is mandatory if any young patients wish to retain their fertility potential. Abstract

Background: The knowledge of variables influencing hospital efficiency is of paramount importance to carry out initiatives of management improvement and optimization. Aim: To explore on the hospital technical efficiency factors. Material and Methods: Data from 255,439 hospital discharges from 28 hospitals from May to October 2011 were analyzed. The efficiency index developed by Santelices et al was calculated. Proxy variables of hospital practices, human resource productivity, strategic performance, financing mechanisms, geographical territory and specialization, were considered. The analysis was carried out estimating econometric models. Results: The most significant variables to explain efficiency are the length of stay adjusted by complexity, the discharges per nurse and midwife and the performance of the Hospital Balancea Score Card. Conclusions: The suggested analysis contributes to identify hospital efficiency causes. The results suggest ways to improve performance of hospitals.
