Venus, lacking an intrinsic global dipole magnetic field, serves as a textbook example of an induced magnetosphere, formed by interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) enveloping the planet. Yet, various aspects of its magnetospheric dynamics and planetary ion outflows are complex and not well understood. Here we analyze plasma and magnetic field data acquired during the fourth Venus flyby of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission and show evidence for closed topology in the nightside and downstream portion of the Venus magnetosphere (i.e., the magnetotail). The formation of the closed topology involves magnetic reconnection-a process rarely observed at non-magnetized planets. In addition, our study provides an evidence linking the cold Venusian ion flow in the magnetotail directly to magnetic connectivity to the ionosphere, akin to observations at Mars. These findings not only help the understanding of the complex ion flow patterns at Venus but also suggest that magnetic topology is one piece of key information for resolving ion escape mechanisms and thus the atmospheric evolution across various planetary environments and exoplanets.

In industrial vision metrology, precise spatial measurement is vital for quality control and complex manufacturing, traditionally relying on target arrays for sub-pixel accuracy (0.05–0.1 pixels) and precision to beyond 1:200,000. However, target design, placement and measurement are often time-consuming and challenging for large-scale projects. Automated, markerless methods, generally called Structure-from-Motion (SfM), based on handcrafted algorithms or deep learning-based pipelines, offer greater flexibility but are not widely adopted due not only to concerns about reliability and precision, but also because in many industrial photogrammetry applications targets highlight particular feature points of interest, e.g. tooling points, holes and edges. This study reviews the differences between target-, handcrafted- and learning-based approaches, explores hybrid methods combining targets and natural features, and tests learning-based or handcrafted approaches against the traditional target-based method. Two end-to-end learning-based pipelines based on SuperPoint+LightGlue and KeyNet+AffNet+HardNet are evaluated. Results show that deep learning pipelines for tie point extraction provide enhanced automation but inferior triangulation precision, while being comparable to handcrafted methods.

Knee arthroplasty benefits significantly from computer-assisted navigation, which improves the accuracy of prosthesis placement. However, current methods require invasive optical locators to track the position of the knee, which carries risks such as infection and prolonged healing times. To address these limitations, this work uses markerless trinocular SLAM to achieve accurate 3D reconstruction of the knee during surgery. The approach integrates SuperGlue for robust feature matching and incorporates segmentation to mask the knee, improving reconstruction accuracy despite challenges such as low-texture surfaces, reflections and spotlight illumination. The accuracy of the handheld trinocular camera system is evaluated under dynamic conditions, simulating camera movement during surgery to ensure accurate reconstruction during real-time surgery. In addition, a robot-guided dataset will be used to assess the repeatability and robustness of the SLAM approach. This research focuses on positional accuracy in motion and aims to advance real-time, non-invasive navigation solutions for knee arthroplasty, contributing to safer and more efficient surgical outcomes.

Abstract: The anisotropy of energetic particles provides essential information to help resolve the underlying fundamental physics of their spatial distributions, injection, acceleration, and transport processes. In this work, we report an energetic ion enhancement that is characterized by very large and long-lasting anisotropies observed by STEREO A and Solar Orbiter, which are nearly aligned along the same nominal Parker spiral. This ion enhancement appears at the rising phase of a widespread solar energetic particle event that was associated with the farside coronal mass ejection on 2022 February 15. According to our analysis, the long-lasting anisotropy resulted from the continuous injection of energetic ions from a well-connected particle source located beyond the STEREO A’s orbit. Solar Orbiter also observed an interval of very large anisotropy dominated exclusively by sunward streaming ions but with the additional implication that it detected the very early phase of ion injections onto magnetic field lines that newly connected to the particle source, which is likely the first reported event of this kind. These results further illustrate how energetic particle anisotropy information, in particular from multiple observer locations, can be used to disentangle the sources and transport processes of energetic ions, even when their heliospheric context is not simple.

What does a social learner learn? Research has explored imitation-based social learning strategies as well as inverse reinforcement algorithms that estimate others' true reward function. In the current study, we propose that social learning may be more elaborate and develop a model of social learning using Bayesian inference that seeks to understand both the task an observed demonstrator is performing and the demonstrator itself. Using simulations, we show that the model is able to learn about the demonstrator when provided with full and partial information. We strengthen this point by asking the model to make inferences about missing choice and reward information. Last, we show that the model is able to represent one set of beliefs about the environment while attributing a distinct set of beliefs to the demonstrator. Thus, we move away from simple models of social learning, investigating inference-making as a core mechanism of social learning.

BackgroundMeasuring the incidence of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among people who inject drugs (PWID) is key to track progress towards elimination. We aimed to summarise global data on HIV and primary HCV incidence among PWID and associations with age and sex or gender.MethodsIn this systematic review and meta-analysis, we updated an existing database of HIV and HCV incidence studies among PWID by searching MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO, capturing studies published between Jan 1, 2000, and Dec 12, 2022, with no language or study design restrictions. We contacted authors of identified studies for unpublished or updated data. We included studies that estimated incidence by longitudinally re-testing people at risk of infection or by using assays for recent infection. We pooled incidence and relative risk (RR; young [generally defined as ≤25 years] vs older PWID; women vs men) estimates using random-effects meta-analysis and assessed risk of bias with a modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42020220884.FindingsOur updated search identified 9493 publications, of which 211 were eligible for full-text review. An additional 377 full-text records from our existing database and five records identified through cross-referencing were assessed. Including 28 unpublished records, 125 records met the inclusion criteria. We identified 64 estimates of HIV incidence (30 from high-income countries [HICs] and 34 from low-income or middle-income countries [LMICs]) and 66 estimates of HCV incidence (52 from HICs and 14 from LMICs). 41 (64%) of 64 HIV and 42 (64%) of 66 HCV estimates were from single cities rather than being multi-city or nationwide. Estimates were measured over 1987-2021 for HIV and 1992-2021 for HCV. Pooled HIV incidence was 1·7 per 100 person-years (95% CI 1·3-2·3; I2=98·4%) and pooled HCV incidence was 12·1 per 100 person-years (10·0-14·6; I2=97·2%). Young PWID had a greater risk of HIV (RR 1·5, 95% CI 1·2-1·8; I2=66·9%) and HCV (1·5, 1·3-1·8; I2=70·6%) acquisition than older PWID. Women had a greater risk of HIV (RR 1·4, 95% CI 1·1-1·6; I2=55·3%) and HCV (1·2, 1·1-1·3; I2=43·3%) acquisition than men. For both HIV and HCV, the median risk-of-bias score was 6 (IQR 6-7), indicating moderate risk.InterpretationAlthough sparse, available HIV and HCV incidence estimates offer insights into global levels of HIV and HCV transmission among PWID. PurposeBrace treatment is the most common nonoperative treatment to prevent curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The goal of this review and analysis is to characterize curve behavior after completion of brace treatment and to identify factors that may facilitate the estimation of long-term curve progression.MethodA review of the English language literature was completed using the MEDLINE (PUBMED) database of publications after 1990 until September 2020. Studies were included if they detailed a minimum of 1 year post-brace removal follow-up of AIS patients. Data retrieved from the articles included Cobb angle measurements of the major curves at "in-brace," weaning, and follow-up visit(s) for all patients described and for subset populations.ResultsFrom 75 articles, 18 relevant studies describing a follow-up period of 1-25 years following brace removal were included in the analyses. The reviewed literature demonstrates that curves continue to progress after brace treatment is completed with three main phases of progression: (i) immediate (upon brace removal) where a mean curve progression of 7° occurs; (ii) short term (within five years of brace removal) where a relatively high progression rate is evident (0.8°/year); and (iii) long term (more than five years after brace removal) where the progression rate slows (0.2°/year). Rubber production is a labour-intensive process. In order to reduce the needed number of workers and the waste of material, the level of digitalisation should be increased. One part of the production is the extrusion to produce gaskets and similar objects. An automated observation of the continuous rubber extrudate enables an early intervention in the production process. In addition to chemical monitoring, the geometrical observation of the extrudate is an important aspect of the quality control. For this purpose, we use laser triangulation sensors (LTS) at the beginning and the end of the cooling phase of the extrudate after the extrusion. The LTS acquire two-dimensional profiles at a constant frequency. To combine these profiles into a three-dimensional model of the extrudate, the movement of the extrudate has to be tracked. Since the extrudate is moved over a conveyor belt, the conveyor belt can be tracked by a stereo camera system to deduce the movement of the extrudate. For the correct usage of the tracking, the orientation between the LTS and the stereo camera system needs to be known. A calibration object that considers the different data from the LTS and the camera system was developed to determine the orientation. Afterwards, the orientation can be used to combine arbitrary profiles. The measurement setup, consisting of the LTS, the stereo camera system and the conveyor belt, is explained. The development of the calibration object, the algorithm for evaluating the orientation data and the combination of the LTS profiles are described. Finally, experiments with real extrusion data are presented to validate the results and compare three variations of data evaluation. Two use the calculated orientation, but have different tracking approaches and one without any orientation necessary.

This study addresses the challenges inherent in preserving archaeological waterlogged wood, which is prone to deformation and decay if not stabilized immediately after recovery. Conventional preservation methods, such as impregnation with polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions, often result in undesirable dimensional changes. To obtain exact spatio-temporal information on the deformations during the conservation process, a photogrammetric monitoring system, utilizing a stereo camera facing from air into the liquid, attached to an automated biaxial measurement unit is proposed. Special target heads were developed and attached to the wood to provide deformation points. Refraction correction was applied to the imaging model by ray tracing, and indirect flat lighting was used to mitigate turbidity. The system observed logs from a wooden track from the first century, subject to conservation. Subject of investigation were the influence of refraction negligence and scale definition in a bundle geometry, similar to bathymetric aerial setups. Results show that refraction correction is imperative for good results. Furthermore, scale definition with highly accurately determined scale bars and inclusion of relative orientation constraints provide further accuracy improvements.

Dynamic photogrammetry is an established method for acquiring 3D information of deforming objects or dynamic scenes in various close-range applications. A crucial impact has occlusions caused by object deformations, obstacles or camera movements. Temporal occlusions are highly application-specific and sometimes difficult to predict, resulting in a significant reduction of reconstruction quality or the aborting of image sequence processing. Previous approaches usually model such occlusions as semantic information and consider them using image masks. However, generating these image masks requires complex methods and extensive training data. Due to the unpredictability of the complexity and movements of dynamic scenes, generating training data is challenging in many applications. Therefore, this paper proposes an alternative modelling approach, which can be part of a spatio-temporal matching process. Based on the characteristic high redundancy, occlusions can be detected using robust estimation methods and considered in the optimisation. Therefore, no information about the occlusions and further processing steps are necessary. We evaluate our approach with synthetic and real data of an industrial application regarding the accuracy and ability to detect occlusion simultaneously. The evaluation of the proposed approach shows that the impact of occlusion can be eliminated, and the quality of the results is comparable to conventional methods.

In uncertain environments, individuals often use external cues to guide their judgments and decisions. Anchoring refers to the finding that numerical judgments often gravitate towards previously considered standards. Although an extremely robust effect, prior research on anchoring largely focused on single-anchor paradigms. The present study instead investigated how multiple anchors affect numerical judgments. In Experiment 1, participants exposed to both a low and high anchor provided judgments that were between judgments made by participants exposed solely to low or high anchors. However, anchors that were encountered first exerted a disproportionate influence on subsequent judgments. Experiment 2 replicated this primacy effect both when anchors were plausible or implausible standards. Finally, Experiment 3 demonstrated that this primacy effect was reduced to non-significance by inserting a secondary distraction task following the exposure to each anchor. Implications of the current multiple-anchor results for various theories of anchoring effects are discussed.

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), characterized by their magnetic flux ropes, could potentially trigger geomagnetic disturbances. They have been attracting extensive investigations for decades. Despite numerous ICME models proposed in the past, few account for the curvature of the flux rope axis. In this study, we use conjunction observations from ACE, STEREO A and B, Juno and Solar Orbiter to analyze the evolution of the rope orientation of ICME flux ropes. Our findings indicate that the orientation of these ropes changes independently of the scale of the ropes or the distance they travel between spacecrafts. Furthermore, we estimate and compare the major radii of these flux ropes, uncovering a diverse range of distributions that do not seem to depend on the flux rope’s width. These results provide fresh insights and constraints for global ICME models, thereby contributing to the advancement of space weather research.

Introduction Germany and the European Union have experienced successive waves of refugees since 2014, resulting in over 1.6 million arrivals, including families with young children. These vulnerable populations often face xenophobia, discrimination, substandard living conditions and limited healthcare access, contributing to a high prevalence of mental health problems (MHP). Our primary goal is to proactively address MHP in refugee parents and prevent its potential impact on their children through effective early interventions. Using a low-threshold, primary care-based approach, we aim to enhance parenting skills and address parental psychopathology, creating a supportive environment for parents and children.Methods and analysis In this randomised controlled trial, 188 refugee parents of 6-year-old children or younger who meet the clinical cut-off on the MHP scale will participate. They are randomly assigned to either the experimental psychotherapeutic intervention, delivered by general practitioners (10-week Improve intervention), or treatment as usual, in a ratio of 1:1. The randomisation will be masked only for outcome assessors. Improve includes face-to-face sessions with general practitioners, an interactive online parenting programme (Triple P Online) and regular protocol-based telephone calls by psychologists. Primary outcomes will assess the intervention’s effects on parental and child MHP and parenting skills, with secondary outcomes including psychosocial and physical health indicators. Outcomes will be assessed at pre, post and at 3-month and 6-month follow-ups. The study is scheduled to run from February 2019 to July 2025.Ethics and dissemination The project Improve-MH (application number 602) was approved by the local ethics committee of Ruhr-University of Bochum and is being conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. The study is also conducted in full accordance with the German Data Protection Act, and the Good Clinical Practice guideline (GCP) and is sensitive to specific ethical considerations. Results will be disseminated at scientific conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals and provided to consumers of healthcare.Trial registration number The trial was prospectively registered at the German Clinical Trials Register (Deutsches Register Klinischer Studien, DRKS-ID: DRKS00019072) on 16 March 2020.

Purpose: Hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for early lesions of diabetic retinal disease (DRD). Updating the DRD staging system to incorporate relevant basic and cellular mechanisms pertinent to DRD is necessary to better address early disease, disease progression, the use of therapeutic interventions, and treatment effectiveness. Design: We sought to review preclinical and clinical evidence on basic and cellular mechanisms potentially pertinent to DRD that might eventually be relevant to update the DRD staging system. Participants: Not applicable. Methods: The Basic and Cellular Mechanisms Working Group (BCM-WG) of the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative carefully and extensively reviewed available preclinical and clinical evidence through multiple iterations and classified these. Main Outcome Measures: Classification was made into evidence grids, level of supporting evidence, and anticipated future relevance to DRD. Results: A total of 40 identified targets based on pathophysiology and other parameters for DRD were grouped into concepts or evaluated as specific candidates. VEGFA, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha related pathways, plasma kallikrein, and angiopoietin 2 had strong agreement as promising for use as biomarkers in diagnostic, monitoring, predictive, prognostic, and pharmacodynamic responses as well as for susceptibility/risk biomarkers that could underlie new assessments and eventually be considered within an updated DRD staging system or treatment, based on the evidence and need for research that would fit within a 2-year timeline. The BCM-WG found there was strong reason also to pursue the following important concepts regarding scientific research of DRD acknowledging their regulation by hyperglycemia: inflammatory/cytokines, oxidative signaling, vasoprotection, neuroprotection, mitophagy, and nutrients/microbiome. Conclusion: Promising targets that might eventually be considered within an updated DRD staging system or treatment were identified. Although the BCM-WG recognizes that at this stage little can be incorporated into a new DRD staging system, numerous potential targets and important concepts deserve continued support and research, as they may eventually serve as biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets with measurable benefits to patients with diabetes. The exploration-exploitation dilemma in dynamic decision-making scenarios is a notoriously hard problem to solve. Having a partner to potentially learn from might make it easier to balance exploration and exploitation. In the current study, we investigate the impact of social information (i.e., about others’ exploration behavior vs. their rewards) and partner performance (optimal vs. random) on participants’ behavior in a dynamic decision-making task that contains a learning trap. We find that observing the exploration behavior of an optimally choosing partner was detrimental to participants’ overall performance and reduced participants’ exploratory tendencies. In contrast, observing a random partner’s exploration behavior stimulated participants’ exploration, though this increase in exploration did not help participants to uncover the reward function. Following previous literature, a reinforcement learning model that contained eligibility traces was able to describe human behavior and helped to uncover potential mechanisms that could explain aspects of the findings.

Traditionally, heliophysics is characterized as the study of the near-Earth space environment, where plasmas and neutral gases originating from the Earth, the Sun, and other solar system bodies interact in ways that are detectable only through in-situ or close-range (usually within ∼10 AU) remote sensing. As a result, heliophysics has data from the space environment around a handful of solar system objects, in particular the Sun and Earth. Comparatively, astrophysics has data from an extensive array of objects, but is more limited in temporal, spatial, and wavelength information from any individual object. Thus, our understanding of planetary space environments as a complex, multi-dimensional network of specific interacting systems may in the past have seemed to have little to do with the highly diverse space environments detected through astrophysical methods. Recent technological advances have begun to bridge this divide. Exoplanetary studies are opening up avenues to study planetary environments beyond our solar system, with missions like Kepler, TESS, and JWST, along with increasing capabilities of ground-based observations. At the same time, heliophysics studies are pushing beyond the boundaries of our heliosphere with Voyager, IBEX, and the future IMAP mission. The interdisciplinary field of star-exoplanet interactions is a critical, growing area of study that enriches heliophysics. A multidisciplinary approach to heliophysics enables us to better understand universal processes that operate in diverse environments, as well as the evolution of our solar system and extreme space weather. The expertise, data, theory, and modeling tools developed by heliophysicists are crucial in understanding the space environments of exoplanets, their host stars, and their potential habitability. The mutual benefit that heliophysics and exoplanetary studies offer each other depends on strong, continuing solar system-focused and Earth-focused heliophysics studies. The heliophysics discipline requires new targeted funding to support inter-divisional opportunities, including small multi-disciplinary research projects, large collaborative research teams, and observations targeting the heliophysics of planetary and exoplanet systems. Here we discuss areas of heliophysics-relevant exoplanetary research, observational opportunities and challenges, and ways to promote the inclusion of heliophysics within the wider exoplanetary community.

Abstract Increasing evidence suggests a considerable role of pre-movement beta bursts for motor control and its impairment in Parkinson’s disease. However, whether beta bursts occur during precise and prolonged movements and if they affect fine motor control remains unclear. To investigate the role of within-movement beta bursts for fine motor control, we here combine invasive electrophysiological recordings and clinical deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic nucleus in 19 patients with Parkinson’s disease performing a context-varying task that comprised template-guided and free spiral drawing. We determined beta bursts in narrow frequency bands around patient-specific peaks and assessed burst amplitude, duration, and their immediate impact on drawing speed. We reveal that beta bursts occur during the execution of drawing movements with reduced duration and amplitude in comparison to rest. Exclusively when drawing freely, they parallel reductions in acceleration. Deep brain stimulation increases the acceleration around beta bursts in addition to a general increase in drawing velocity and improvements of clinical function. These results provide evidence for a diverse and task-specific role of subthalamic beta bursts for fine motor control in Parkinson’s disease; suggesting that pathological beta bursts act in a context dependent manner, which can be targeted by clinical deep brain stimulation.

Abstract Loneliness is a prevalent and stigmatized phenomenon associated with adverse (mental) health outcomes. However, evidence-based interventions to alleviate loneliness are scarce. This randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov-ID: NCT04655196) evaluated the efficacy of an internet-based cognitive behavioral self-help intervention (ICBT) to reduce loneliness by comparing two intervention groups with guidance or automated messages against a waitlist control group. Adults (N = 243) suffering from loneliness were recruited from the general public and then randomly assigned (2:2:1) to a 10-week ICBT with human guidance (GU) or automated messages (AM) or to a waitlist control group (WL). Loneliness, assessed with the UCLA-9, was the primary outcome. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and 10 weeks (post) and analyzed using mixed-effects models. The pooled intervention conditions resulted in lower loneliness scores at post-assessment than the WL (Cohen’s d = 0.57, 95% CI [0.25; 0.89]) and reduced depressive symptoms, social anxiety, social avoidance behavior, and rejection sensitivity (d = 0.32–0.52). The GU group had lower loneliness scores at post-assessment than the AM group (d = 0.42, 95% CI [0.13; 0.70]). ICBT effectively alleviated loneliness, and guidance increased the reduction in loneliness compared to automated messages. Alleviating loneliness with ICBT further seems to reduce the overall burden of psychopathological symptoms.

Stability of historic wooden constructions is changing with time and should be inspected appropriately for risk assessment and prevention. The stability or strength values of built-in historic timber are difficult or even impossible to be derived without invasive investigation, but this is particularly problematic for the monitoring of heritage objects. Luckily there are some visible timber surface features, like knots and cracks, which can act as individual evidence to estimate the wood strength as well as to adjust its grade class indicator. In the final project, we aim to compare different approaches for 3D digital documentation of historic wood timbers and focus on automatic knot detection using AI techniques. A first feasibility study reported here provides a scientific baseline for the development of an automated method to analyse historic timber stability using 3D surveying and recognised surface features. First results about texture and resolution properties are discussed here.

Abstract We use in situ plasma observations made by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter spacecraft to show for the first time that magnetosonic waves can couple the solar wind to the upper ionosphere and deposit energy there. The waves are generated upstream of Venus, are advected into the shock and propagate across the draped magnetic field, through the magnetosheath and into the dayside upper ionosphere. The magnetosonic waves damp in the upper ionosphere in a region where physical collisions are rare, and electromagnetic forces must control this damping. The waves damp when the ionospheric heavy ion density is a few thousand cm−3 and wave‐particle interactions with the dominant O+ ions are postulated as the damping mechanism. Estimates of ion heating rates show that 1%–5% of the O+ ion distribution function could be heated to escape energy in 10–40 s.

Boundaries between space plasmas occur in numerous contexts and scales, from astrophysical jets to planetary magnetospheres. Mass and momentum transport across boundaries poses a fundamental problem in magnetospheric physics. Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a promising mechanism to facilitate transport. Although previous studies have suggested KHI occurrence in various space plasmas, theory predicts that compressibility prevents KHI excitation at boundaries with large density gradients because of previously considered boundary structures where density varies with velocity. Based on the observations of a large density gradient boundary by MAVEN at Mars, where we can observe an extreme case, in this study, we show that it is the entropy, instead of the previously considered density, that varies with the velocity in the real velocity-sheared boundary. The entropy-based boundary structure places the velocity shear in a lower-density region than the traditional density-based structure and weakens the compressibility effect. This new boundary structure thus enables KHI excitation even at large density gradient boundaries, such as at the ionopause of unmagnetized planets and the plasmapause of magnetized planets. The result suggests the ubiquitous occurrence of KHI in the plasma universe and emphasizes its important role in planetary cold plasma escape from unmagnetized planets.

The Martian magnetotail exhibits a highly twisted configuration, shifting in response to changes in polarity of the interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) dawn-dusk (B Y) component. Here, we analyze ∼6000 MAVEN orbits to quantify the degree of magnetotail twisting (θ Twist) and assess variations as a function of (a) strong planetary crustal field location, (b) Mars season, and (c) downtail distance. The results demonstrate that θ Twist is larger for a duskward (+B Y) IMF orientation a majority of the time. This preference is likely due to the local orientation of crustal magnetic fields across the surface of Mars, where a +B Y IMF orientation presents ideal conditions for magnetic reconnection to occur. Additionally, we observe an increase in θ Twist with downtail distance, similar to Earths magnetotail. These findings suggest that coupling between the IMF and moderate-to-weak crustal field regions may play a major role in determining the magnetospheric structure at Mars.

Inquiries into the medium of education take up a question that has so far usually been answered teleologically or psychologically. The coherence of educational endeavors has been illustrated by their objective, and this again has been illustrated by the changes in the state of the educatees. The difficulty of such an approach is that no educator is able to know the inner state of the educatee, i.e., that which the latter really experiences, remembers, and expects during the process of education. Moreover, the drawback of all teleology is that it does not provide a concept for understanding the frequent failure of these efforts. Abstract: Introduction: The Stress Overload Scale (SOS; Amirkhan, 2012, 2018) was introduced as a two-factorial self-report measure of stress to overcome limitations of other scales. Methods: We developed a German translation of the SOS and validated it in addition to a short version and an extra-short version. Furthermore, we tested whether manipulating the time frame introduced as retention interval in the instructions affected its psychometric properties. Results: Using two independent age-heterogeneous convenience samples (Ntotal = 1,239), we found good psychometric properties for a modified German short version of the SOS-S (SOS-S-G) and a new extra-short version (SOS-XS-G), but not for the German long version of the SOS. Moreover, manipulating the time frame of the SOS did not affect its psychometric quality. Discussion The SOS enriches the repertoire of self-report measures of stress as it captures the nonpathological core facets of stress in line with theoretical stress conceptualizations.
