This article examines three novels that use fiction to revise the figure of the Argentine author Leopoldo Lugones: Ricardo Piglia’s Respiración artificial (1980), C. E. Feiling’s Un poeta nacional (1993), and César Aira’s Lugones (2020). These three novels present different portrayals of Lugones, which also mirror their opposing views of the Argentine literary tradition. Piglia, Feiling, and Aira look back at the so-called national poet when self-fashioning themselves as writers and outlining a literary project in a (post)dictatorial scenario. In a cultural field marked by the effects of state terror and neoliberal reform policies, these fictional renderings of Lugones become a means of reflecting on the political past and the future of literature. Ultimately, I argue that Respiración artificial, Un poeta nacional, and Lugones devise a figure of the Argentine author decoupled from the mission of consolidating a national identity that Lugones epitomized for nearly half a century. En el siguiente ensayo sostenemos que el género sobre el cual Leopoldo Lugones se presenta como intelectual lo sitúa —en tanto poeta— como autoridad última de la cultura desde la tradición intelectual del Romanticismo y el Modernismo. Desde las fuentes analizadas, con un lenguaje sobrecargado de imágenes, propias del Modernismo Americano, construye sus ensayos prescriptivos-pedagógicos con un carácter explícitamente polémico y político.

Lugones’s theory of oppression focuses on the need for the oppressed to cultivate a different logic of reality. The conditions that allow the emergence of a resistant consciousness rest on a pluralist ontology and on the idea of a multiple self-capable of traveling between «worlds». A key role in this theory is occupied by the space of limen. The limen constitutes a portal to liberation, but it does not guarantee its outcome. In fact, the political project of emancipation from the multiple oppressions requires the creation of coalitions. A goal that can only be achieved through complex communication, which abandons the liberal logic of transparency.

«Viola acherontia», de Leopoldo Lugones (Las fuerzas extrañas, 1906), es un cuento fantástico donde un elemento vegetal cumple una función medular, pues un narrador testigo relata su encuentro con un extraño jardinero que desea inventar una violeta mortífera. En el texto se percibe la influencia de Poe y Hawthorne. Del primero tomó Lugones al insecto conocido como «esfinge de la calavera» (Acherontia atropos), de larga presencia artística en Occidente; del segundo, la idea de una planta que exhala un veneno letal. Así, el argentino se sumó a una persistente tradición de la cultura occidental, a la cual aportó rasgos originales.

This intervention considers how the writings of María Lugones, a philosopher of feminist decolonial theory, might shape a callejera [streetwalker] feminist decolonial methodology and what such a methodology might look like in practice. I describe how a callejera methodology foments deeper relationality by highlighting as methodological tools three of Lugones' concepts: resisting ↔ oppressing, the collective and tantear en la oscuridad. To ground the theory and illustrate possibilities of deeper relationality offered by a callejera methodology, I reflect on on-going research with Colombian collectives actively negotiating experiences of indigeneity and womanhood in relation to histories of colonial and more recent armed violence, as well as ongoing state disinvestment. I make three contributions. First, I suggest that integrating an intersectional analytic of 'both/and' with the complex fluidity between Lugones' concept of resisting ↔ oppressing permits scholars to better understand the negotiation of multiple, intermeshed identities and oppressions, social inequality and power relations in relation to colonial histories and presents. Second, I encourage geographers to embrace a decolonial lens attentive to the relationality between and among collectives, from which many acts of resistance begin. Finally, I consider how a callejera methodology considers coalitional work as central to the research process. Such work embraces difficulty, discomfort and messy relationality often negotiated as if walking blindly through the dark (tantear). I conclude by arguing that geographers' relationally-based research can strengthen feminist decolonial thought in our attention to spatial and temporal scalar differences of place and our commitment to understanding contextually differentiated navigations of identity. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterised by self-starvation. Accounts of AN typically frame the disorder in individualistic terms: e.g., genetic predisposition, perceptual disturbances of body size and shape, experiential bodily disturbances. Without disputing the role these factors may play in developing AN, we instead draw attention to the way disordered eating practices in AN are actively supported by others. Specifically, we consider how Pro-Anorexia (ProAna) websites—which provide support and solidarity, tips, motivational content, a sense of community, and understanding to individuals with AN—help drive and maintain AN practices. We use C. Thi Nguyen's work on epistemic "echo chambers", along with Maria Lugones' work on "worlds" and "ease", to explore the dynamics of these processes. Adopting this broader temporal and intersubjective perspective, we argue, not only helps to further illuminate the experiential character of AN but also has important clinical and therapeutic significance. There is a growing body of feminist scholarship and literature exploring the ways in which Western patriarchal technologies of gender differentiation and sexual violence structure the racial categorisation and dehumanisation that define South Africa's history of slavery, colonialism and apartheid. In this article, I consider the gendered history of white Afrikaner nationalism in the context of these insights. Using the decolonial feminist lens of María Lugones, I interpret the historical and contemporary patriarchal subjugation of the white Afrikaner woman as a site of the production and maintenance of colonial racial categories and hierarchies. Gaining a better understanding of how gender operated as a colonial mode of organisation in the process of forging the ethno-racialised white identity of the Afrikaner in the early nineteenth century in opposition to the black indigenous majority population helps to explain how the continued patriarchal subjugation of white Afrikaner women by Afrikaner men in postcolonial/postapartheid South Africa works to reassert and maintain colonial racial categories and inequalities that continue to plague the country. The aim of this paper is to record and unravel a singular recurrence within César Aira's work; namely the double appearance of the specter of writer Leopoldo Lugones (1874-1938), supplemented in both occasions by Marquis de Sade. Aira took two completely different approaches to these appearances by the author of Lunario sentimental and La guerra gaucha: the first one, in Diccionario de autores latinoamericanos in 1985, was brief, biographical, destructive; the second one, in Lugones in 1990, was lengthy, pathetic and amusing, a fictional account of the Argentinian writer on the day of his suicide. Both appearances conclude by referencing the Marquis of Sade in a similar yet different iteration that fuses life and work, experience and fiction in a sarcastic and violent manner. En el presente artículo se elucidan las fronteras epistemológicas entre el mito y la ciencia ficción dentro del cuento “Los caballos de Abdera” (Las Fuerzas extrañas). Se sostiene que la relectura mitológica desarrollada por Lugones en su cuento si bien no es ciencia ficción (CF), presenta un modelo de naturalización de los eventos fantásticos. En la primera parte se muestran las claves hermenéuticas de esta interpretación lugoniana resaltando la flexibilidad de los mitos para adaptarse a los modelos narrativos de diversas épocas; en la segunda parte, aprovechando la plasticidad del formato mítico, se analiza el proceso de habituación a través del cual se ha naturalizado el uso exagerado de la tecnología en nuestras prácticas diarias para con ello delinear uno de los tópicos recurrentes del género de la CF: las invasiones de seres extraños.

In this article I reflect on methodological concerns that surfaced while I was conducting archival research of the Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa Papers housed in the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin. I articulate my concerns about how to account for the intangible aspects of the research process that impact scholars in profound ways, where after reading a passage or conducting an interview there are thoughts that linger in our minds. I apply Lugones's conceptualizations of worlds, "world"-travelling, and zooming to deliberate on ethical and decolonial archival reading strategies by paying particular attention to hermeneutic approaches to documents and ephemera. These tactics focus on the intangible process of meaning making that relates to feelings, anxiety, frustration, joy, and the construction of different realities that are part of the research process. I argue that Lugones's thought offers significant methodological hermeneutical strategies for archival research. I am adopting Lugones's ideas as methodological tools to interpret Anzaldúa's manuscript "Navigating Nepantla and the Cracks between Worlds." I propose that these hermeneutics provide decolonial ethical strategies for archival research that is committed to gender, raced, sexual, and classed social justice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El presente artí­culo constituye el avance parcial de un trabajo más amplio que se encuentra en desarrollo en el contexto de nuestra tesis doctoral Encrucijada. El concepto de pueblo en la obra de Leopoldo Lugones. 1910-1932 (FFyH, UNC, 2017). La conmemoración del Centenario de la Revolución de Mayo es el momento en el que Lugones traza, desde su perspectiva, la articulación de un discurso que pretendí­a redefinir los parámetros de organización social y polí­tica. Las cuatro obras en que plasma su proyecto funcionan como un recurso retrovanguardista en el que el tiempo se condensa en un pasado que se remite –no sin tensiones– a la Grecia clásica y proyecta a la Argentina al futuro, desde un presente que se percibe como una situación de vací­o temporal, un momento (re)fundador de una utopí­a sociopolí­tica. Así­, la tetralogí­a del Centenario constituye en el punto de referencia desde donde Lugones comprime el tiempo de su relato, recupera el pasado y lo proyecta al futuro en El Ejército de la Ilí­ada (1915).

In this article, I interrogate the historical and symbolic construction of citizenship in the colony in an attempt to shed further light on the enduring political marginalisation of black women in postcolonial, post-apartheid South Africa, despite the comprehensive human rights regime in place. I make the argument that part of the reason for these continued exclusions can be found in the very nature of the institution of citizenship. I argue that citizenship in the postcolony is structured through the convergence of mutually constitutive racial and gendered hierarchies that work to centre white masculinity in a way that is symbolically dependent on the abjection of the black and/or feminine Other. In order to forge a form of political belonging that transcends this complicated grid of whitenormative heteropatriarchal exclusions, a radically intersectional approach is required. However, with reference to the work of American feminist scholar Amy Brandzel, I argue that such a project is rendered impossible by the very nature of citizenship as a system of assigning rights, resources and value to bodies through a discourse of progressive, partial group-based inclusions. In this article the authors discuss in broad strokes the work of two theorists, namely Nigerian sociologist Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí and Argentinian philosopher Maria Lugones to argue that a specific logic of sexualisation accompanied, permeated and coloured the colonial project of racialising the 'native'. The sexual wound which to a great extent explains the abjection of the racialised body, is a key aspect of the colony and should therefore also be a central theme in any properly critical discourse on decolonisation in Africa. After drawing on Oyĕwùmí and Lugones to make their central argument, the authors apply this framework to the problem of sexual violence in South Africa. Understanding the nature of the sexual-racial wound of coloniality will not only ensure that the problem of sexual violence gets properly addressed as a central question of decolonisation, but will also suggest new ways of concretely addressing the problem. In particular, the dominant discourse needs to shift away from the 'emasculated man' trope and towards a critical feminist decoloniality which views the radical dehumanisation of native woman as key to colonial violence understood as a world-destructive. In 2010, Taffy Brodesser-Akner published an article entitled, "How Childbirth Caused my PTSD," on Salon.com. Much to my surprise, her claims that she was seriously traumatized by childbirth encountered strong resistance and disbelief. In trying to understand the source of this resistance, I discovered a type of violence, which I refer to as "metaphysical violence," that is often overlooked, yet prevalent, in what many people in the United States understand as normal childbirth practices and protocols. In this essay, I will use María Lugones'sPilgramages/Peregrinajes to offer a detailed account of what constitutes metaphysical violence, how it functions, and why it is so damaging to at least 9% of post-partum women who meet the criteria for PTSD and the 18% of post-partum women who show some sign of the disorder. Then, I will offer suggestions for how we can help women who may be victims of metaphysical violence during birth avoid some of the trauma it so often induces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Androcentric Detachment. Thinking the colonial matrix of power from the contributions of Silvia Federici and Maria Lugones Abstract This article seeks to contribute to the understanding of the gendered and racialized nature of colonialism from a critical approach of the notion of colonial matrix of power. Bringing back Federici’s and Lugones’ feminist contributions, we will deepen the place that gender, sexuality and race have in shaping the system of domination. In the case of Federici, we will try to recover the role assigned to the witch hunts in the process of primitive accumulation of capital, expanding and deepening this key notion of the Marxist theory. In the case of Lugones, we appeal to her critique of Quijano to stretch the compression limits around the place of gender and sexuality in shaping the colonial matrix of power. Picking up again the decolonial upset as a critical approach to Eurocentric Marxism, we seek to contribute, from feminism, to the androcentric detachment of the decolonial perspective.

The present work proposes that it is possible to interpret Las fuerzas extrañas of Leopoldo Lugones applying the symbolist methodology proposed by the German physicist Heinrich Hertz and philosophical considered by Ernst Cassirer. I will argue that applying this methodology, two results are possible: i) a new reading of Argentinean work's and ii) the identification of life as the phenomenological and hermeneutic key of his work. En el marco de la nueva alianza entre escritores y Estado que se fragua en el campo literario argentino hacia el centenario de la revolución de mayo, la posición nativista para una literatura regional-nacional, forjada en las dos últimas décadas del siglo XIX, se constituye en la piedra basal para mediar y negociar los intereses de un Estado oligárquico que ve amenazada su hegemonía y las necesidades de los escritores nacionales que aspiran a una autonomía profesional que el mercado aún no garantiza, así como las contradicciones inherentes a la conflictiva relación que ambos mantienen con el “pueblo”. Literature on cultural creolisation and hybridity often assumes that innovation and creativity accompany cultural mixing. Ethnographic data from two groups practising an Afro-Brazilian art-form in Russia suggests that some processes of cultural mixing are more creative than others. Maria Lugones' notion of playfulness can help us understand why. Playfulness as an attitude implies critical openness towards the new and unknown. With this attitude the practitioners ofcapoeira angolain Ufa create an exciting environment that is open to individual initiative and experimentation. The less playful group of capoeira in Samara follows the existing Brazilian norms and rules ofcapoeira angolarather rigidly. Therefore, cultural mixing of Russian and Afro-Brazilian worlds occurs more creatively in one case than in the other. There is more freedom for unique initiatives in cultural creolisation that is characterised by the attitude of playfulness. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Celebrating the founding date of a nation is generally the occasion for taking stock of the past and confronting the challenges of the future. It is not unusual to see writers emerge onto the scene in roles either complementary or antagonistic to those of politicians. In so doing they take on a social function that goes beyond that of literary creators to embody the living memory of the Nation’s origins and its founding acts; they redefine national identity and temperament in an attempt to assume the role of guides, of leaders. This objective relies on a strategy to construct the figure of the author which is based on a very particular kind of rhetoric. Taking as our point of reference the role played by Leopoldo Lugones in Argentina’s Centenary Celebrations, we shall focus on the emergence of Abel Posse’s own figure on the Argentine scene in the early years of the twenty-first century, and on the link between Leopoldo Lugones’s nationalism and Abel Posse’s claim to embody it in the context of the Bicentenary.

It also perceived a threat in the contradictions inherent in both the state's and the writers' conflictive relationship with the "people".
