Abstract In the last years, hydrogels from renewable biopolymers and low-cost row materials are a hot topic for biomedical applications. In this context, cellulose nanofibrils are considered suitable building blocks for the synthesis of many biocompatible products, with a variety of chemical-physical properties. Herein we report a multi-technique and multi-scale study, from the molecular to the nanometric length scale, of the sol–gel transition observed in aqueous solutions of TEMPO-oxidized nano-sized cellulose fibrils (TOCNFs), when in the presence of polyvalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+). We combine the data from Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), which provide information about the inner structure of the nanofibril, with those from UV Resonant Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy, which is a sensitive probe of the intra- and inter-molecular interactions in the gel and the liquid state. The transition between the gel and the liquid phases is investigated as a function of the concentration of both TOCNFs and cations, the nature of the latter, and the pH at which the phenomenon is observed. SANS analysis reveals that ion concentration induces an anisotropic swelling in the nanofibrils which, at the same time, become more and more flexible. The nanofibrils flexibility is also dependent on TOCNF concentration and pH value. UVRR allows us to elucidate the structural organization and hydrogen-bonding properties of water in aqueous TOCNF dispersions and gels, showing how water molecules partially lose their typical bulk-like tetrahedral organization when ions are added, and the gel phase is formed. Heterogeneous colorimetric sensors for fluoride ions were obtained by cross-linking TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) with chemically modified branched polyethyleneimine 25 kDa (bPEI). Functionalization of bPEI primary amino groups with aromatic anhydrides led to the formation of the corresponding mono- and bis-imides on the grafted polymers (f-bPEI). A microwave-assisted procedure allowed the optimization of the synthetic protocol by reducing reaction time from 17 h to 30 minutes. Hydrogels obtained by mixing different ratios of TOCNF, bPEI and f-bPEI were lyophilized and thermally treated at about 100 °C to promote the formation of amide bonds between the amino groups of poly-cationic polymers and the carboxylic groups of cellulose nanofibers. This approach generated a series of cellulose nanosponges S1-S3 which were characterized by FT-IR and by solid state 13 C CPMAS NMR. These sponge materials can act as colorimetric sensors for the selective naked-eye recognition of fluoride ions over chloride, phosphate and acetate ions at concentrations of up to 0.05 M in DMSO. Moreover, when the sponges were functionalized with perylene tetracarboxylic diimide, successful naked-eye detection was achieved with only 0.02 % w/w of chromophore units per gram of material.

Cellulose nano-sponges (CNS), obtained by cross-linking TEMPO oxidized and ultra-sonicated cellulose nano-fibers (TOUS-CNFs) with branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI), underwent here a systematic small angle neutron scattering investigation, by varying the amount of cross-linker and the water content. The aim was to provide experimental evidence of nano-porosity in the TOUS-CNF network of these nano-sponges (CNSs) by investigating the water nano-confinement geometries in the adsorbent material. Moreover, we also verified how the breaking/reformation of specific intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions between water and the chemical groups present in the architecture of the CNSs could contribute to regulate the water adsorption process observed at macroscopic level. The analysis of the experimental data, performed in terms of the correlation length model, allowed us to extract the short-range correlation length ξ, interpreted as a very first indirect estimation of the effective nano-dimension of the cavities produced by the cross-linking of the reticulated cellulose nano-fibers. From the model, power-law (n) and Lorentzian (m) exponents have been also obtained, associated with the density of TOUS-CNFs at high (larger than hundreds of A) and low (~ 10–100 A) spatial scales, respectively. These parameters were all sensitive to the structural variations induced by the progressive uptake of water on the bPEI/TOUS-CNF sponges with different bPEI:TOUS-CNF (w/w) ratios. Finally, we investigated the effect of the addition of citric acid in the CNS formulation, confirming its role in increasing cross-linking density and sponge rigidity. The obtained results appear crucial in order to rationalize the design of these sponges and to track the changes in the ability of the final products as efficient nano-confinement systems for water.

We discuss the temperature dependence of the 1H and 13C nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/ T1 and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) performance in β-cyclodextrins with deuterated methyl groups. It is shown that 13C DNP-enhanced polarization is raised up to 10%. The temperature dependence of the buildup rate for nuclear spin polarization and of 1/ T1, below 4.2 K, is analyzed in the framework of the thermal mixing regime and the origin of the deviations from the theoretical behavior discussed. 13C 1/ T1 is determined at low temperature by the glassy dynamics and at high temperature by the rotational molecular motions of the deuterated methyl groups. Thanks to deuteration, relaxation times approaching 30 s are achieved at room temperature, making this material interesting for molecular imaging applications. The effect of molecular dynamics on the line width of the NMR spectra is also discussed.

“Minisci reaction,” which is the nucleophilic substitution of protonated heteroaromatic bases by carbon-centered radicals under oxidative conditions, finds useful applications in organic synthesis. Over the last 50 years, Minisci reaction has reached its full consecration, finding application in several organic synthetic routes for a wide range of molecules of pharmaceutical and biological interest. This photocatalytic approach for the promotion of this chemo- and regioselective substitution of heteroarenes has appeared as a potential eco-friendly alternative to the classical thermal routes. In this context the sunlight-induced nucleophilic radical addition to protonated heteroaromatic bases catalyzed by TiO2-based semiconductors could be considered as the genesis of the photocatalytic approach. This protocol, which was successfully applied for the generation of a wide range of radical sources, has been widely analyzed in the first edition of this volume. Herein, after recalling some key aspects of the TiO2-photocatalysis, and our progress in the molecular dynamic studies finalized to the future design of ideal TiO2 crystals, we mainly focus on the recent advances in sun- and visible light–mediated Minisci reaction, outlining the progress behind the state-of-the-art to promote the regio- and even enantioselective functionalization of heteroaromatic bases under milder and more benign conditions.

Cyclodextrins (CDs), a class of cyclic oligosaccharides formed by α-(1,4) linked glucopyranose units, were functionalized with (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) radicals to prepare water soluble supramolecular organic radical contrast agents (ORCAs) for the in vivo detection of glioma tumor in animal models. A first set of molecules (CDn1, n=6,7,8 is the number of both TEMPO and glucopyranose units) was studied by superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) magnetometry in order to define the role of the CD macrocycle on the effective magnetic moment (μeff ). The μeff value increased from 3.982 μB (CD61) to 4.522 μB (CD81) but was limited by intramolecular antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions. A set of water-soluble ORCAs (CDn8, n=6,7,8) was prepared by a sequence of thiol-ene and Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide "click" reactions. Their 1 H water relaxivities r1 of these ORCAs were between 0.739 mM-1 s-1 (CD68) to 1.047 mM-1 s-1 (CD88) in D2 O/H2 O 9 : 1 (v : v) at 300 K. One of them (CD78) was tested on glioma-bearing rats with reduced side effects and good relaxivity in vivo.

Stable hydrogels with tunable rheological properties were prepared by adding Ca2+ ions to aqueous dispersions of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized and ultra-sonicated cellulose nanofibers (TOUS-CNFs). The gelation occurred by interaction among polyvalent cations and the carboxylic units introduced on TOUS-CNFs during the oxidation process. Both dynamic viscosity values and pseudoplastic rheological behaviour increased by increasing the Ca2+ concentration, confirming the cross-linking action of the bivalent cation. The hydrogels were proved to be suitable controlled release systems by measuring the diffusion coefficient of a drug model (ibuprofen, IB) by high-resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. IB was used both as free molecule and as a 1:1 pre-formed complex with &beta, cyclodextrin (IB/&beta, CD), showing in this latter case a lower diffusion coefficient. Finally, the cytocompatibility of the TOUS-CNFs/Ca2+ hydrogels was demonstrated in vitro by indirect and direct tests conducted on a L929 murine fibroblast cell line, achieving a percentage number of viable cells after 7 days higher than 70%.

The growing human activity on the sea coasts is more and more associated to a progressively increasing of seawater pollution. Ship operational discharges (such as bilge water), together with local accidents or illegal activities, often lead to detect ppm concentrations of heavy metal ions in marine waters. For this reason, highly efficient remediation technologies are required to guarantee the abatement of these contaminants. The use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is emerging as a valuable alternative for environmental remediation. However, the concerns related to ENMs potential ecotoxicity still limit their use in real scenarios, in spite of the good to excellent remediation performances. The correct choice of the starting material and of the synthetic protocol could provide new safe-by-design solutions for this purpose. Following this approach, we herein report the eco-design strategy used for the development of eco-friendly cellulose-based nanostructured sponges (CNS). The latter resulted to be effective sorbent units for heavy metals removal from seawater. The materials were obtained following a two-step protocol, consisting first in the production of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers, followed by their cross-linking in the presence of branched polyethyleneimine. CNSs herein described exhibit high performances in removing a wide range of heavy metal ions (Zn(II), Cd(II), Cr(III), Hg(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II)) from artificial sea water (ASW) in a concentration range of 1–250 ppm. Environmental safety of materials (ecosafety) was investigated by using a standardized ecotoxicity bioassay as algal growth inhibition test (OECD 201) coupled with an in vivo exposure study using a filter-feeder marine bivalve species in which immune cells viability (neutral red retention time) and genotoxicity (micronucleus test) were investigated. The results in terms of eco-safety evaluation led to the optimization of the material synthetic strategy (eco-design) and allow to combine the best decontamination efficiency with no risk for aquatic biota.

A convenient and effective FeCl3 catalyzed one-pot three component protocol for the synthesis of 1,2,4-trisubstituted imidazoles from arylacetic acids, N-arylbenzamidines and nitromethane via simultaneous C−H and N−H bond activation has been developed. The reaction involves C−H activation of arylacetic acid to form aromatic aldehyde which on condensation with N-arylbenzamidine gives azadiene. Nitromethane on Michael addition with azadiene produces ring annulated intermediate which upon subsequent cyclization-elimination sequence offers imidazole. The process utilizes readily available arylacetic acids and inexpensive catalyst. This user friendly protocol provided 1,2,4-trisubstituted imidazoles in moderate to good yields with high functional group tolerance and ample substrate scope.

1H dynamic nuclear polarization and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates have been studied in amorphous complexes of β-cyclodextrins doped with different concentrations of the TEMPO radical. Nuclear polarization increased up to 10% in the optimal case, with a behavior of the buildup rate (1/TPOL) and of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1n) consistent with a thermal mixing regime. The temperature dependence of 1/T1n and its increase with the radical concentration indicate a relaxation process arising from the modulation of the electron–nucleus coupling by the glassy dynamics. The high-temperature relaxation is driven by molecular motions, and 1/T1n was studied at room temperature in liquid solutions for dilution levels close to the ones typically used for in vivo studies.

Two different formulations of cyclodextrin nanosponges (CDNS), obtained by polycondensation of β-cyclodextrin with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid dianhydride (EDTAn), were treated with aqueous solutions of ibuprofen sodium salt (IbuNa) affording hydrogels that, after lyophilisation, gave two solid CDNS-drug formulations. 1H fast MAS NMR and 13C CP-MAS NMR spectra showed that IbuNa was converted in situ into its acidic and dimeric form (IbuH) after freeze-drying. 13C CP-MAS NMR spectra also indicated that the structure of the nanosponge did not undergo changes upon drug loading compared to the unloaded system. However, the 13C NMR spectra collected under variable contact time cross-polarization (VCT-CP) conditions showed that the polymeric scaffold CDNS changed significantly its dynamic regime on passing from the empty CDNS to the drug-loaded CDNS, thus showing that the drug encapsulation can be seen as the formation of a real supramolecular aggregate rather than a conglomerate of two solid components. Finally, the structural features obtained from the different solid-state NMR approaches reported matched the information from powder X-ray diffraction profiles.

The focus of this work is on addressing how the adsorption properties of cyclodextrin (CD) based polymeric hydrogels (cyclodextrin nanosponges, CDNS) can be regulated by a precise control of a crucial parameter such as the characteristic pore size of the polymer network. With this aim, Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) experiments are performed on different CDNS polymer formulations, differing by (i) the chemical structure of the cross-linking agent used for the polymerization of CD, which affects the flexibility of the strands between two crosslinking junctions, (ii) the relative molar ratio of cross-linker to monomer, affecting the cross-linking density, and (iii) the dimension of the CD macrocycle, regulating the steric hindrance and number of available reactive sites on the monomer. The analysis of the experimental data in terms of a two-correlation-length model allows one to extract a correlation length ζ that is interpreted as an experimental assessment of the average mesh-size of the cross-linked polymer, confirming the effective nano-size of the cavities formed in the network of CDNS. The hydration-dependence of ζ is modelled by an empirical functional form, that provides as key parameters the swelling rate of the polymeric network and the upper limit for the mesh size of the material. These parameters are useful for the characterization of the dynamic response of the hydrogel to swelling and the maximum mesh size compatible with the chemical structure of the polymer.

The catalytic role of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) in promoting free-radical hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions, well-documented for processes of industrial and synthetic interest, is here investigated for the first time in a biological environment. While NHPI by itself did not show any bioactivity, selected NHPI-derivatives (NHPIDs) revealed the ability to activate the intracellular formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing the depletion of glutathione (GSH) levels and an increase in oxidative stress (OS). The evident bioactivity of some of these derivatives resulted in a significant reduction of the viability in osteosarcoma MG-63, suggesting a new, potential role of NHPIDs as pro-oxidant drugs. The key role of the N–OH group in promoting oxidative stress is demonstrated.

The response to pH variation of polymeric cyclodextrin-based hydrogels has been investigated by a multi-technique approach based on UV Raman and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) together with Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). By exploiting the complementary information of these three investigation methods, the structural, viscoelastic and molecular modifications of the polymer brought about by the pH changes have been examined, over a spatial range going from mesoscopic to nanoscopic length-scale. The data provide a picture where an increase of pH promotes the change of the characteristic size of the hydrophilic pores when the cross-linker has the suitable structural and acid-base properties, and leads to the reinforcement of the polymer domains interconnections, providing a stiffer gel network on the length-scale probed by BLS. Raman signals are sensitive both to structural changes of the polymer network and to changes of the intermolecular ordering of water due to solvent-polymer interactions. The destructuring effect on the tetrahedral ice-like configurations of water is especially evident at high pH, and might be ascribed to an increased exposition to the solvent of the ionic portions of the polymer surface.

Polymer functionalization strategies have recently attracted considerable attention for several applications in biomaterials science. In particular, technological advancements in medical imaging have focused on the design of polymeric matrices to improve non-invasive approaches and diagnostic accuracy. In this scenario, the use of microwave irradiation of aqueous solutions containing appropriate combinations of polymers is gaining increasing interest in the synthesis of sterile hydrogels without using monomers, eliminating the need to remove unreacted species. In this study, we developed a method for the in situ fabrication of TEMPO-labeled hydrogels based on a one-pot microwave reaction that can then be tracked by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) without using toxic compounds that could be hostile for the target tissue. Click chemistry was used to link TEMPO to the polymeric scaffold. In an in vivo model, the system was able to preserve its TEMPO paramagnetic activity up to 1 month after hydrogel injection, showing a clear detectable signal on T1-weighted MRI with a longitudinal relaxivity value of 0.29 mM s−1, comparable to a value of 0.31 mM s−1 characteristic of TEMPO application. The uncleavable conjugation between the contrast agent and the polymeric scaffold is a leading point to record these results: the use of TEMPO only physically entrapped in the polymeric scaffold did not show MRI traceability even after few hours. Moreover, the use of TEMPO-labeled hydrogels can also help to reduce the number of animals sacrificed being a longitudinal non-invasive technique.

The molecular mechanism responsible for the thermosensitive behaviour exhibited by pH-responsive cyclodextrin-based hydrogels is explored here with the twofold aim of clarifying some basic aspects of H-bond interactions in hydrogel phases and contributing to a future engineering of cyclodextrin hydrogels for targeted delivery and release of bioactive agents. The degree of H-bond association of water molecules entrapped in the gel network and the extent of intermolecular interactions involving the hydrophobic/hydrophilic moieties of the polymer matrix are probed by UV Raman and IR experiments, in order to address the question of how these different and complementary aspects combine to determine the pH-dependent thermal activation exhibited by these hydrogels. Complementary vibrational spectroscopies are conveniently employed in this study with the aim of safely disentangling the spectral response arising from the two main components of the hydrogel systems, i.e. the polymer matrix and water solvent. The experimental evidence suggests that the dominant effects in the mechanism of solvation of cyclodextrin-based hydrogels are due to the changes occurring, upon increasing of temperature, in the hydrophobicity character of specific chemical moieties of the polymer, as triggered by pH variations. The achievements of this work corroborate the potentiality of the UV Raman scattering technique, in combination with more conventional IR experiments, to provide a "molecular view" of complex macroscopic phenomena exhibited in hydrogel phases.

All-organic porous sponges were obtained throughout the direct and solvent-free (oven 105 °C, time>6 h) crosslinking of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) with 25 kDa branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) in the presence of different amounts of citric acid (CA) as co-crosslinker. The chemical and mechanical stability of these materials was provided by the formation of amide bonds between the carboxylic moieties of TOCNF and CA with the primary amines of bPEI. The mechanical properties were investigated under static and dynamic loads with both dry and wet samples. The materials had the interesting capability to recover their shape with reduced losses in mechanical resistance, while their Young's modulus progressively increased with the content of CA. In work toward developing possible applications of bPEI-TOCNF sponges in drug delivery, amoxicillin (AM) and ibuprofen (IB) were considered as model drugs. All materials showed very good performance in adsorbing both AM and IB (ca. 200 mg g-1 ) from methanol solution. In particular, an increased adsorption of IB was observed in parallel to the increase of citrate moieties in the samples. Moreover, samples crosslinked in presence of CA showed slower kinetic release in aqueous environments than materials obtained without CA.

A new class of lipophilic N-hydroxyphthalimides catalysts designed for the aerobic oxidation of cumene in solvent-free conditions were synthesized and tested. The specific strategy proposed for the introduction of lipophilic tails on the NHPI moiety leads to lipophilic catalysts which, while completely preserving the activity of the precursor, allow to conduct the catalytic oxidation in neat cumene for the very first time. The corresponding cumyl hydroperoxide is obtained in good yields (28-52%) and high selectivity (95-97%), under mild conditions. Importantly, the presence of a polar solvent is no longer required to guarantee the complete solubilization of the catalyst. On the other hand, the oxidation conducted in neat cumene unearths the unexpected necessity of using small amounts of acetonitrile in order to fully promote the hydrogen atom transfer process and prevent the catalyst from detrimental hydrogen bond (HB) driven aggregation.

PEGylation is widely used to improve the stability of gene delivery vectors through the decrease of non-specific binding to serum proteins. In order to provide “stealth” vectors with targeting properties, the grafting of specific ligands is mandatory. For instance, the tripeptide arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) has been shown to confer selectivity towards some integrin-overexpressing tumor cells. Unfortunately, owing to the different RGD grafting degrees, some difference in starting materials and experimental conditions, the literature displays contradictory findings about the efficacy of this strategy. Starting from branched poly(ethylene imine) ( b PEI) transfectant and the heterobifunctional linker N -hydroxy-succinimide-poly(ethylene glycol)-maleimide, a series of variably substituted PEI-PEGs were synthesized and functionalized with linear and cyclic RGDs. b PEI-PEG-RGDs were as effective as b PEI in complexing DNA while derivatization did affect the physicochemical properties of polyplexes. A degree of substitution of 1.31% led to enhanced targeting of cognate receptor-expressing cells without impairing the transfection efficiency of b PEI, even in the presence of serum. Of note, both RGDs were equally effective to confer selectivity to polyplexes. These results highlight the key role of the degree of substitution on the effectiveness and selectivity of b PEI-PEG-RGDs, suggesting that a systematic approach is needed for the development of more effective targeted transfectants.

In light of the recent development of new soft materials, nanostructured self-assembled systems have attracted attention in a variety of technological fields of high social impact. Cyclodextrin nanosponges (CDNS) represent a new and highly versatile class of cross-linked cyclodextrin (CD)-based nanoporous polymers. Their intriguing properties, including safety, biodegradability, negligible toxicity, marked swelling behavior, superior inclusion capability with respect to native CD, are the bases for potential for applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Areas covered: We report on the state-of-art concerning a detailed characterization of structural and dynamical features of CDNS explored by the combined use of different and complementary techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared absorption in attenuated total reflectance geometry (FTIR-ATR) and Raman spectroscopies, and high resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS) NMR spectroscopy. The ambitious objective is to furnish an exhaustive survey of the role played by hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups within the cross-linked network, in dry and swollen states, in determining the macroscopic functional features of CDNS. Expert opinion: The reported results may significantly contribute in the rational design and optimization of new stimuli-responsive systems exhibiting tunable inclusion/release properties, adapted to the therapeutic demands of pathology.

International audience; The oxidation of natural polysaccharides by TEMPO has become by now an “old chemical reaction” which led to numerous studies mainly conducted on cellulose. This regioselective oxidation of primary alcohol groups of neutral polysaccharides has generated a new class of polyuronides not identified before in nature, even if the discovery of enzymes promoting an analogous oxidation has been more recently reported. Around the same time, the scientific community discovered the surprising biological and techno-functional properties of these anionic macromolecules with a high potential of application in numerous industrial fields. The objective of this review is to establish the state of the art of TEMPO chemistry applied to polysaccharide oxidation, its history, the resulting products, their applications and the associated modifying enzymes.

UV Raman and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) experiments have been used in this study to explore the complex phase change behavior occurring in pH-responsive polysaccharide hydrogels as a function of temperature. Due to the different physical quantities measured by the two techniques, the joint analysis of Raman and BLS spectra has provided an unprecedented large-scale characterization of the molecular rearrangements and of the different kinds of hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions that cooperate to determine the phase transformation observed in these hydrogels during the heating of the gel. As the main result, the analysis of the Raman and BLS spectra showed the existence of a correlation between the local (molecular) and collective properties of the gels during the phase transformation undergone by the system, which is markedly triggered by pH. The joint set of experimental results suggests a model according to which the mechanism of pH dependence in the hydrogels under investigation is dominated by the interactions involving the hydrophobic parts of the polymer skeleton, whereas the solvation process observed under heating of the gels is driven by the progressive distancing of the polymer domains among them, as monitored by the Brillouin sound velocity.

Cyclodextrin nanosponges (CDNS) are a very promising class of cross-linked polymers, made up of cyclodextrins. CDNS swollen in aqueous solution give rise to cyclodextrin-based hydrogel in different states—gel or liquid suspension—depending on the hydration level of the system. Here we present a thorough inspection of the vibrational dynamics of these hydrogel by Raman scattering experiments, with the aim of clarifying the role played by the hydrogen-bond dynamics of water molecules confined into the nano-sized pores of nanosponges in determining the rigidity of the hydrogel network and their maximum water-holding capacity. Changes occurring in the spectral shape of the OH stretching band of water were interpreted by accounting the connectivity pattern of water molecules concurring to the gelation process. Spectral deconvolution analysis gives evidence of the existence of a characteristic cross-over hydration level associated to the rearrangement of water molecules in more cooperative, bulk-like networks as a consequence of saturation sites of water confinement of nanosponges. This interpretation is further confirmed by the inspection of the estimated collective intensities. These findings also support the existence of a specific phase diagram of the cyclodextrin nanosponges hydrogel, where the molecular structure of the cross-linking agent used during the synthesis of nanosponge plays a fundamental role in defining the nano- and microscopic properties of the system.

We report the aerobic photoactivation of Nhydroxyphthlimide (NHPI) to the phthalimido-N-oxyl (PINO) radical mediated by naphthalene monoimides (NI) for promoting the selective oxidation of alkylaromatics and allylic compounds to the corresponding hydroperoxides. In absence of either NI or NHPI no oxidation was observed, meaning that the two molecules operate in a synergistic way. Sunlight as well as artificial UV-light irradiation was necessary in order to perform the process at low temperature (30-35°C). EPR spectroscopy confirmed the role of NI and O2 in promoting the formation of the superoxide radicals O2 •-which, in turn, increased the concentration of PINO radicals during the UV light irradiation of NI/NHPI mixtures in MeCN. The investigation was extended to NI bearing different substituents on the naphthalene moiety. Finally, the synthesis and application of a unique photocatalyst including the NI and NHPI moieties linked by a suitable spacer was also considered. In this case the photocatalyst showed a substrate-depending behaviour with some peculiarities respect to the system where NI and NHPI are independent units in the same reacting system. This photocatalytic system paves the way to a non-thermal metal-free approach for the C-H bond activation towards aerobic oxidation under very mild conditions.

BACKGROUND In spite of its efficiency and versatility, examples of the use of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as catalyst for oxidations at industrial scale are scant, mainly due to the lack of methodologies for the recovery and reuse of the catalyst. This paper reports a step by step investigation of the aerobic oxidation of cumene (CU), in order to verify the usability of NHPI catalysis in industrial processes. RESULTS CU is oxidized to the corresponding cumyl hydroperoxide (CHP) at 70°C in the presence of a polar co-solvent and 1% of NHPI with good conversion (>30%) and almost complete selectivity (>90%), without requiring the use of additional initiators. The catalyst is recovered at the end of the oxidation process by removal of polar co-solvent, with consequent precipitation of NHPI. The resulting filtered mixture is treated with non-basic supports, which are capable of adsorbing the residual NHPI by physical interaction. Finally, the adsorbing solids can be regenerated by washing with a polar solvent, allowing the recovery of residual catalyst. CONCLUSION We provide evidence for the feasibility of the use of NHPI catalysis for industrial applications by investigating the case study of CU oxidation. The process can be performed under mild conditions without requiring the use of sacrificial initiators. The effect of temperature and composition in the NHPI precipitation step is investigated. The performances of basic and non-basic adsorbing beds during the recovery of residual NHPI are compared. The results obtained indicate that the recovery and recycling of the unaltered catalyst is possible without affecting, at the same time, the nature of cumyl hydroperoxide. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Aerogels are highly porous materials whose interesting chemico-physical properties can be exploited in several advanced applications. Ceramic aerogels based on titanium oxides, allow coupling the physical properties with the photocatalytic role of TiO2 in promoting pollutant photodegradation, selective organic photosynthesis, and antibacterial activity. Here, we prepared hybrid organic-ceramic aerogels via one-pot approach by mixing aqueous hydrogels of cellulose nanofibres with TiO2 or TiO2/SiO2 sols and subsequent freeze-drying of the obtained mixtures. The further calcination of the hybrid materials at suitable temperatures allowed achieving ceramic aerogels able to combine a pronounced adsorption efficiency of organic molecules with photocatalytic activity. The new materials have been characterized in terms of morphology, structure, and heterogeneous photo-degradation ability of potential pollutants. A possible explanation for the different behavior in adsorption affinity and photocatalytic efficiency is reported on the basis of the experimental evidences.

ed spectra, and assigned to the carbonyl stretching modes of the polymeric network, is performedby using band deconvolution procedures.At the same time, a detailed inspectionof the low-wavenumber vibrational dynamics of these polymers iscarried out, focusing on the modifications occurring on the so-called boson peak. The simultaneous analysis of different wavenumber ranges in Raman and infrared spectra of cyclodextrin nanosponges allows us to develop a reliable strategy for exploring both the cross-linking degree and the elastic properties of these innovative materials. The overall results give a complete characterization of the structural and dynamical properties of the system, in turn strictly connected to the entrapment/transport ability of these polymeric matrices. The chemical cross-linking of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride (EDTA) led to branched polymers referred to as cyclodextrin nanosponges (CDNSEDTA). Two different preparations are described with 1:4 and 1:8 CD-EDTA molar ratios. The corresponding cross-linked polymers were contacted with 0.27 M aqueous solution of ibuprofen sodium salt (IP) leading to homogeneous, colorless, drug loaded hydrogels. The systems were characterized by high resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS) NMR spectroscopy. Pulsed field gradient spin echo (PGSE) NMR spectroscopy was used to determine the mean square displacement (MSD) of IP inside the polymeric gel at different observation times td. The data were further processed in order to study the time dependence of MSD: MSD = f(td). The proposed methodology is useful to characterize the different diffusion regimes that, in principle, the solute may experience inside the hydrogel, namely normal or anomalous diffusion. The full protocols including the polymer preparation and purification, the obtainment of drug-loaded hydrogels, the NMR sample preparation, the measurement of MSD by HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy and the final data processing to achieve the time dependence of MSD are here reported and discussed. The presented experiments represent a paradigmatic case and the data are discussed in terms of innovative approach to the characterization of the transport properties of an encapsulated guest within a polymeric host of potential application for drug delivery.

4,4′-(4,4′-Isopropylidenediphenoxy)bis(N-hydroxyphthalimide), which is a new lipophilic analogue of N-hydroxyphthalimide, can act as an effective catalyst in the aerobic oxidation of alkylaromatics under reduced amounts of polar cosolvent. The catalyst was selected on the basis of an in-depth study of the influence that substituents on the aromatic ring of N-hydroxyphthalimide exert on determining the NO[BOND]H bond dissociation energy (BDE). BDE values for a range of model molecules are calculated by DFT and measured by EPR spectroscopy. The new catalyst can be successfully employed in the aerobic oxidation of cumene, ethylbenzene, and cyclohexylbenzene, affording, in all cases, good conversions and high selectivity for the corresponding hydroperoxide. The effect of solvent, catalyst, and temperature has also been investigated.

Bioinspired aerogel functionalization by surface modification and coating is in high demand for biomedical and technological applications. In this paper, we report an expedient three-step entry to all-natural surface-functionalized nanostructured aerogels based on (a) TEMPO/NaClO promoted synthesis of cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF); (b) freeze-drying for aerogel preparation; and (c) surface coating with a eumelanin thin film by ammonia-induced solid state polymerization (AISSP) of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) or 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) previously deposited from an organic solution. Scanning electron microscopy showed uniform deposition of the dark eumelanin coating on the template surface without affecting porosity, whereas solid state (13)C NMR and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed the eumelanin-type character of the coatings. DHI melanin coating was found to confer to TOCNF templates a potent antioxidant activity, as tested by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays as well as strong dye adsorption capacity, as tested on methylene blue. The unprecedented combination of nanostructured cellulose and eumelanin thin films disclosed herein implements an original all-natural multifunctional aerogel biomaterial realized via an innovative coating methodology.

The fundamental question of how the reorganization of the hydrogen-bond (HB) network of water is influenced by the combination of nano-confinement and hydrophobic/hydrophilic solvation effects is addressed here using a spectroscopic study of water absorbed in a model, pH-sensitive polysaccharide hydrogel. The effects of temperature, hydration level and pH on the vibrational dynamics associated with the water molecules and the polymer skeleton are disentangled and analysed by a complementary and combined use of UV-Raman scattering and IR spectroscopy. The experimental data give evidence that the solvation effects in the hydrogel matrix are essentially dominated by the hydration of more hydrophobic parts of the polymer network, while the effect of pH on the HB reorganization of confined water molecules is found to be similar to that induced by cooling of the system. A tentative explanation of these results has been provided in terms of interplay between different kinds of interactions, i.e. hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic.

Warm temperature spikes represent one of the main spoilage causes of perishable good-stuffs. The development of packaging materials with thermal buffering properties represents a powerful solution to address the problems arising from an uncontrollable interruption during cold-chain logistic. Here, we propose the use of phase change material (PCM) composites for the design of cold storage packaging. Two different concentrations (25 and 50% w/w) of commercially available micro-encapsulated PCM were homogeneously dispersed in paper matrix via conventional negative filtration techniques. The possibility of obtaining composites with different latent heats in the 4–10 °C range has been demonstrated via differential scanning calorimetry measurements. Heat transmission tests, simulating the heating processes typical of the removal from a cold room, were performed on a suitable multilayer configuration. The obtained materials show the ability to maintain the inner temperature for a duration up to 10-fold longer in time, when compared to a similar cellulose material with a thickness of 2 cm. Experimental results have been numerically assessed by considering the material thermal parameters as homogeneous. Both experimental and computational approaches here discussed offer an easy way for the design of micro-encapsulated PCM–cellulose composite as building blocks in cold storage packaging design.

Nanoremediation, which is the use of nanoparticles and nanomaterials for environmental remediation, is widely explored and proposed for preservation of ecosystems that suffer from the increase in human population, pollution, and urbanization. We herein report a critical analysis of nanotechnologies for water remediation by assessing their sustainability in terms of efficient removal of pollutants, appropriate methods for monitoring their effectiveness, and protocols for the evaluation of any potential environmental risks. Our purpose is to furnish fruitful guidelines for sustainable water management, able to promote nanoremediation also at European level. In this context, we describe new nanostructured polysaccharide-based materials obtained from renewable resources as alternative efficient and ecosafe solutions for water nano-treatment. We also provide eco-design indications to improve the sustainability of the production of these materials, based on life-cycle assessment methodology.

N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) is an organocatalyst for free-radical processes able to promote the aerobic oxidation of a wide range of organic substrates. In particular, NHPI can catalyze the hydroperoxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). This property could be of interest for biological applications. This work reports the synthesis of two β-cyclodextrin derivatives (CD5 and CD6) having a different degree of methylation and bearing a NHPI moiety. These compounds, having different solubility in water, have been successfully tested for the hydroperoxidation of methyl linoleate, chosen as the PUFA model molecule.

In order to elucidate the effects of the nature of the cross-linker, of the hydration level and of the hydrophobic/ hydrophilic balance on the macro- and microscopic properties of a paradigmatic model of polysaccharide hydrogel, an integrated approach based on the combined use of low-frequency Raman scattering and FTIR-ATR absorption has been developed. The proposed methodology aims to explore the stability range of the liquid and gel phase diagram of the system. This approach was applied to cyclodextrin based nanosponges (CDNS), prepared by polymerization of α-, β-, and γ-cylcodextrins (CDNS) with an activated derivative of ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid. It revealed successful, on one side, for a comparative analysis of the elasticity, as mesoscopic parameter, of the dry polymeric network, measured by Raman spectroscopy in the low frequency (0 ÷ 150 cm–1) range, and, on the other side, for the investigation of the water holding capacity, as macroscopic parameter, through the analysis of the vibrational dynamics of water molecules in the swollen polymers, monitored by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy in two selected wavenumber regions, i.e. 2800 ÷ 3800 cm–1 and 1500 ÷ 1800 cm–1, where the O-H stretching and H-O-H bending vibrations respectively occur. As main result, the same evolution as a function of the molar ratio n, has been observed for the elasticity on mesoscopic scale, as described by the Boson Peak (ωBP) and the swelling ability on macroscopic scale, expressed by the mass ratio m describing the gel-to-sol transition in these systems. From the results, the way for a rational development of stimuli-responsive systems with specific performances, by modulating the stability range of the liquid suspension and gel phases properly changing the molar ratio n during the synthesis, is opened.

The cross-linking, via amide bond formation, of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers with branched-polyethyleneimine functionalized with pNO2-phenyl urea units generates a novel polymeric conjugate material, with a sponge-like morphology, which can be successfully used for the heterogeneous sensing of fluoride anions in DMSO solution.
