Search

Measuring a pulsar's rotational evolution is crucial to understanding the nature of the pulsar. Here we provide updated timing models for the rotational evolution of six pulsars, five of which are rotation phase-connected using primarily NICER X-ray data. For the newly-discovered fast energetic young pulsar, PSR J0058-7218, we increase the baseline of its timing model from 1.4 days to 8 months and not only measure more precisely its spin-down rate nudot = (-6.2324+/-0.0001)x10^-11 Hz s^-1 but also for the first time the second time derivative of spin rate nuddot = (4.2+/-0.2)x10^-21 Hz s^-2. For the fastest and most energetic young pulsar, PSR J0537-6910 (with 16 ms spin period), we detect 4 more glitches, for a total of 15 glitches over 4.5 years of NICER monitoring, and show that its spin-down behavior continues to set this pulsar apart from all others, including a long-term braking index n = -1.234+/-0.009 and interglitch braking indices that asymptote to, 18 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ; very minor edits and no changes to numbers

arXiv:2012.01346v1, et al., In the last 25 years a new generation of X-ray satellites imparted a significant leap forward in our knowledge of X-ray pulsars. The discovery of accreting and transitional millisecond pulsars proved that disk accretion can spin up a neutron star to a very high rotation speed. The detection of MeV-GeV pulsed emission from a few hundreds of rotation-powered pulsars probed particle acceleration in the outer magnetosphere, or even beyond. Also, a population of two dozens of magnetars has emerged. INTEGRAL played a central role to achieve these results by providing instruments with high temporal resolution up to the hard X-ray/soft, γ-ray band and a large field of view imager with good angular resolution to spot hard X-ray transients. In this article we review the main contributions by INTEGRAL to our understanding of the pulsating hard X-ray sky, such as the discovery and characterization of several accreting and transitional millisecond pulsars, the generation of the first catalog of hard X-ray/soft γ-ray rotation-powered pulsars, the detection of polarization in the hard X-ray emission from the Crab pulsar, and the discovery of persistent hard X-ray emission from several magnetars., Al. SAX J1748.9-2021 is a transiently accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar. It is also known as an X-ray burster source discovered by Beppo-SAX. We analysed the persistent emission and type-I X-ray burst properties during its 2015 outburst. The source varied from hard to soft state within half day. We modeled the broad-band spectra of the persistent emission in the 1 - 250 keV energy band for both spectral states using the quasi-simultaneous INTEGRAL and Swift data. The broad-band spectra are well fitted by an absorbed thermal Componization model, compps, in a slab geometry. The best-fits for the two states indicate significantly different plasma temperature of 18 and 5 keV and the Thomson optical depth of 3 and 4, respectively. In total, 56 type-I X-ray bursts were observed during the 2015 outburst, of which 26 detected by INTEGRAL in the hard state, 25 by XMM-Newton in the soft state, and 5 by Swift in both states. As the object transited from the hard to the soft state, the recurrence time for X-ray bursts decreased from $\approx 2$ to $\approx1$ hr. The relation between the recurrence time, $ \Delta t_{\rm rec}$, and the local mass accretion rate per unit area onto the compact object, $\dot m$, is fitted by a power-law model, and yielded as best fit at $\Delta t_{\rm rec} \sim \langle \dot{m} \rangle^{-1.02\pm0.03}$ using all X-ray bursts. In both cases, the observed recurrence times are consistent with the mixed hydrogen/helium bursts. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission is the first focusing X-ray telescope in the hard X-ray (3-79 keV) band. Among the phenomena that can be studied in this energy band, some require high time resolution and stability: rotation-powered and accreting millisecond pulsars, fast variability from black holes and neutron stars, X-ray bursts, and more. Moreover, a good alignment of the timestamps of X-ray photons to UTC is key for multi-instrument studies of fast astrophysical processes. In this Paper, we describe the timing calibration of the NuSTAR mission. In particular, we present a method to correct the temperature-dependent frequency response of the on-board temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. Together with measurements of the spacecraft clock offsets obtained during downlinks passes, this allows a precise characterization of the behavior of the oscillator. The calibrated NuSTAR event timestamps for a typical observation are shown to be accurate to a precision of ~65 microsec., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Comments welcome

The young, fast-spinning, X-ray pulsar J0537-6910 displays an extreme glitch activity, with large spin-ups interrupting its decelerating rotation every ~100 days. We present nearly 13 years of timing data from this pulsar, obtained with the {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer}. We discovered 22 new glitches and performed a consistent analysis of all 45 glitches detected in the complete data span. Our results corroborate the previously reported strong correlation between glitch spin-up size and the time to the next glitch, a relation that has not been observed so far in any other pulsar. The spin evolution is dominated by the glitches, which occur at a rate ~3.5 per year, and the post-glitch recoveries, which prevail the entire inter-glitch intervals. This distinctive behaviour provides invaluable insights into the physics of glitches. The observations can be explained with a multi-component model which accounts for the dynamics of the neutron superfluid present in the crust and core of neutron stars. We place limits on the moment of inertia of the component responsible for the spin-up and, ignoring differential rotation, the velocity difference it can sustain with the crust. Contrary to its rapid decrease between glitches, the spin-down rate increased over the 13 years, and we find the long-term braking index $n_{\rm l}=-1.22(4)$, the only negative braking index seen in a young pulsar. We briefly discuss the plausible interpretations of this result, which is in stark contrast to the predictions of standard models of pulsar spin-down., Comment: Minor changes to match the MNRAS accepted version

New simultaneous X-ray and radio observations of the archetypal mode-switching pulsar PSR B0943+10 have been carried out with XMM-Newton and the LOFAR, LWA and Arecibo radio telescopes in November 2014. They allowed us to better constrain the X-ray spectral and variability properties of this pulsar and to detect, for the first time, the X-ray pulsations also during the X-ray-fainter mode. IGR~J18245--2452/PSR J1824--2452I is one of the rare transitional accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, showing direct evidence of switches between states of rotation powered radio pulsations and accretion powered X-ray pulsations, dubbed transitional pulsars. IGR~J18245--2452 is the only transitional pulsar so far to have shown a full accretion episode, reaching an X-ray luminosity of $\sim10^{37}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ permitting its discovery with INTEGRAL in 2013. In this paper, we report on a detailed analysis of the data collected with the IBIS/ISGRI and the two JEM-X monitors on-board INTEGRAL at the time of the 2013 outburst. We make use of some complementary data obtained with the instruments on-board XMM-Newton and Swift in order to perform the averaged broad-band spectral analysis of the source in the energy range 0.4 -- 250~keV. We have found that this spectrum is the hardest among the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars. We improved the ephemeris, now valid across its full outburst, and report the detection of pulsed emission up to $\sim60$ keV in both the ISGRI ($10.9 \sigma$) and Fermi/GBM ($5.9 \sigma$) bandpass. The alignment of the ISGRI and Fermi GBM 20 -- 60 keV pulse profiles are consistent at a $\sim25\ \mu$s level. We compared the pulse profiles obtained at soft X-rays with \xmm\ with the soft \gr-ray ones, and derived the pulsed fractions of the fundamental and first harmonic, as well as the time lag of the fundamental harmonic, up to $150\ \mu$s, as a function of energy. We report on a thermonuclear X-ray burst detected with \Integ, and using the properties of the previously type-I X-ray burst, we show that all these events are powered primarily by helium ignited at a depth of $y_{\rm ign} \approx 2.7\times10^8$ g cm${}^{-2}$. The accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) SAX J1808.4-3658, shows a peculiar orbital evolution that proceeds at a much faster pace than predicted by conservative binary evolution models. It is important to identify the underlying mechanism responsible for this behavior because it can help to understand how this system evolves. It has also been suggested that, when in quiescence, SAX J1808.4-3658 turns on as a radio pulsar, a circumstance that might provide a link between AMXPs and black-widow radio pulsars. In this work we report the results of a deep radio pulsation search at 2 GHz using the Green Bank Telescope in August 2014 and an X-ray monitoring of the 2015 outburst with Chandra, Swift, and INTEGRAL. In particular, we present the X-ray timing analysis of a 30-ks Chandra observation executed during the 2015 outburst. We detect no radio pulsations, and place the strongest limit to date on the pulsed radio flux density of any AMXP. We also find that the orbit of SAX J1808.4-3658 continues evolving at a fast pace and we compare it to the bhevior of other accreting and non-accreting binaries. We discuss two scenarios: either the neutron star has a large moment of inertia (I>1.7x10^45 g cm^2) and is ablating the donor (by using its spin-down power) thus generating mass-loss with an efficiency of 40% or the donor star is undergoing quasi-cyclic variations due to a varying mass-quadrupole induced by either a strong (1 kG) field or by some unidentified mechanism probably linked to irradiation., Submitted to ApJ

We present the results of the analysis of two Chandra observations of Circinus X-1 performed in 2007, for a total exposure time of ~50 ks. The source was observed with the High Resolution Camera during a long X-ray low-flux state of the source. Cir X-1 is an accreting neutron-star binary system that exhibits ultra-relativistic arcsec-scale radio jets and an extended arcmin-scale radio nebula. Furthermore, a recent paper has shown an X-ray excess on arcmin-scale prominent on the side of the receding radio jet. In our images we clearly detect X-ray structures both on the side of the receding and the approaching radio jet. The X-ray emission is consistent with being from synchrotron origin. Our detection is consistent with neutron-star binaries being as efficient as black-hole binaries in producing X-ray outflows, despite their shallower gravitational potential., Accepted for publication in MNRAS-Letters

The fourth transient accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 was observed during its February/March 2003 outburst by INTEGRAL, partly simultaneously with the XMM-Newton and RXTE satellites. We present here the first study of the 0.5-200 keV broad-band spectra of the source. On February 28, the source spectrum was consistent with thermal Comptonization by electrons of temperature \~40 keV, considerably larger than the value (~10 keV) previously derived from the low energy XMM-Newton data alone. The source is detected by INTEGRAL up to 200 keV with a luminosity in the energy band (0.1-200) keV of 1.3 x 10E37 erg/s (assuming a distance of 8 kpc). 22 days later the luminosity dropped to 3.6 x 10E36 erg/s. A re-analysis of XMM-Newton data yields the orbital Doppler variations of the pulse period and refines the previous ephemeris. For this source having shortest orbital period of any known binary radio or X-ray millisecond pulsar, we constrain the companion mass Mc < 0.022 Msun, assuming minimum mass transfer driven by gravitational radiation. Only evolved dwarfs with a C/O composition are consistent with the Roche lobe and gravitational radiation constraints, while He dwarfs require an unlikely low inclination., accepted for publication on A&A, 7 pages, 7 figures

IGR J00291+5934 is the fastest-known accretion-powered X-ray pulsar, discovered during a transient outburst in 2004. In this paper, we report on Integral and Swift observations during the 2015 outburst, which lasts for $\sim25$ d. The source has not been observed in outburst since 2008, suggesting that the long-term accretion rate has decreased by a factor of two since discovery. The averaged broad-band (0.1 - 250 keV) persistent spectrum in 2015 is well described by a thermal Comptonization model with a column density of $N_{\rm H} \approx4\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, a plasma temperature of $kT_{\rm e} \approx50$ keV, and a Thomson optical depth of $\tau_{\rm T}\approx1$. Pulsations at the known spin period of the source are detected in the Integral data up to the $\sim150$ keV energy band. We also report on the discovery of the first thermonuclear burst observed from IGR J00291+5934, which lasts around 7 min and occurs at a persistent emission level corresponding to roughly $1.6\%$ of the Eddington accretion rate. The properties of the burst suggest it is powered primarily by helium ignited at a depth of $y_{\rm ign}\approx1.5\times10^9$ g cm$^{-2}$ following the exhaustion by steady burning of the accreted hydrogen. The Swift/BAT data from the first $\sim20$ s of the burst provide indications of a photospheric radius expansion phase. We analyze the spectral and timing properties of IGR J17498-2921 and the characteristics of X-ray bursts to constrain the physical processes responsible for the X-ray production in this class of sources. The broad-band average spectrum is well-described by thermal Comptonization with an electron temperature of kT_e ~ 50 keV, soft seed photons of kT_bb ~ 1 keV, and Thomson optical depth \taut ~ 1 in a slab geometry. The slab area corresponds to a black body radius of R_bb ~9 km. During the outburst, the spectrum stays remarkably stable with plasma and soft seed photon temperatures and scattering optical depth that are constant within the errors. This behavior has been interpreted as indicating that the X-ray emission originates above the neutron star (NS) surface in a hot slab (either the heated NS surface or the accretion shock). The INTEGRAL, RXTE, and Swift data reveal the X-ray pulsation at a period of 2.5 milliseconds up to ~65 keV. The pulsed fraction is consistent with being constant, i.e. energy independent and has a typical value of 6-7%. The nearly sinusoidal pulses show soft lags that seem to saturate near 10 keV at a rather small value of ~ -60\mu s with those observed in other accreting pulsars. The short burst profiles indicate that there is a hydrogen-poor material at ignition, which suggests either that the accreted material is hydrogen-deficient, or that the CNO metallicity is up to a factor of about two times solar. We present the analysis of the bright X-ray binary 4U 1820-30, based mainly on XMM-Newton-RGS data, but using complementary data from XMM-Epic, Integral, and Chandra-HETG, to investigate different aspects of the source. The broad band continuum is well fitted by a classical combination of black body and Comptonized emission. The continuum shape and the high flux of the source (L/L_Edd\sim0.16) are consistent with a "high state" of the source. We do not find significant evidence of iron emission at energies >=6.4 keV. The soft X-ray spectrum contain a number of absorption features. Here we focus on the cold-mildly ionized gas. The neutral gas column density is N_H\sim1.63x10^21 cm^-2. The detailed study of the oxygen and iron edge reveals that those elements are depleted, defined here as the ratio between dust and the total ISM cold phase, by a factor 0.20\pm0.02 and 0.87\pm0.14, respectively. Using the available dust models, the best fit points to a major contribution of Mg-rich silicates, with metallic iron inclusion. Although we find that a large fraction of Fe is in dust form, the fit shows that Fe-rich silicates are disfavored. The measured Mg:Fe ratio is 2.0\pm0.3. Interestingly, this modeling may point to a well studied dust constituent (GEMS), sometimes proposed as a silicate constituent in our Galaxy. Oxygen and iron are found to be slightly over- and under-abundant, respectively (1.23 and 0.85 times the solar value) along this line of sight. We also report the detection of two absorption lines, tentatively identified as part of an outflow of mildly ionized gas (��\sim-0.5) at a velocity of \sim1200 km/s., 13 pages, 10 figures. DUAL will study the origin and evolution of the elements and explores new frontiers of physics: extreme energies that drive powerful stellar explosions and accelerate particles to macroscopic energies; extreme densities that modify the laws of physics around the most compact objects known; and extreme fields that influence matter in a way that is unknown on Earth. The variability of these extreme objects requires continuous all-sky coverage, while detailed study demands an improvement in sensitivity over previous technologies by at least an order of magnitude. The DUAL payload is composed of an All-Sky Compton Imager (ASCI), and two optical modules, the Laue-Lens Optic (LLO) and the Coded-Mask Optic (CMO). The ASCI serves dual roles simultaneously, both as an optimal focal-plane sensor for deep observations with the optical modules and as a sensitive true all-sky telescope in its own right for all-sky surveys and monitoring. While the optical modules are located on the main satellite, the All-Sky Compton Imager is situated on a deployable structure at a distance of 30 m from the satellite. This configuration not only permits to maintain the less massive payload at the focal distance, it also greatly reduces the spacecraft-induced detector background, and, above all it provides ASCI with a continuous all-sky exposure.

IGR J17511-3057 is the second X-ray transient accreting millisecond pulsar discovered by INTEGRAL. It was in outburst for about a month from September 13, 2009. The broad-band average spectrum is well described by thermal Comptonization with an electron temperature of kT_e ~ 25 keV, soft seed photons of kT_bb ~ 0.6 keV, and Thomson optical depth \tau_T ~ 2 in a slab geometry. During the outburst the spectrum stays remarkably stable with plasma and soft seed photon temperatures and scattering optical depth being constant within errors. We fitted the outburst profile with the exponential model, and using the disk instability model we inferred the outer disk radius to be (4.8 - 5.4) \times 1010 cm. The INTEGRAL and RXTE data reveal the X-ray pulsation at a period of 4.08 milliseconds up to ~ 120 keV. The pulsed fraction is shown to decrease from ~22% at 3 keV to a constant pulsed fraction of ~17-18% between 7-30 keV, and then to decrease again down to ~13% at 60 keV. The nearly sinusoidal pulses show soft lags monotonically increasing with energy to about 0.2 ms at 10-20 keV similar to those observed in other accreting pulsars. The short burst profiles indicate hydrogen-poor material at ignition, which suggests either that the accreted material is hydrogen-deficient, or that the CNO metallicity is up to a factor of 2 times solar. However, the variation of burst recurrence time as a function of m (inferred from the X-ray flux) is much smaller than predicted by helium-ignition models., Comment: 11 Pages, 10 Figures, 3 Tables, Submitted to A&A

We present detailed spectral and temporal characteristics over the whole X-ray band. For this purpose data have been used from INTEGRAL, RXTE and XMM-Newton. The INTEGRAL hard X-ray (>10 keV) time-averaged total spectrum, can be described by a power law with a photon index Gamma = 1.13 +/- 0.06 and extends to ~175 keV. No evidence for a spectral break is found. No significant long-term time variability has been detected above 20 keV. Pulsed emission is measured up to 270 keV (12.3 sigma; 20-270 keV). Three different pulse components can be recognized in the pulse profiles: 1) a hard pulse which contributes above ~4 keV, 2) a softer pulse not contributing in the hard X-ray domain and 3) a very soft pulse component below 2 keV. Detailed phase-resolved spectroscopy of the pulsed emission confirms long-term stability. The spectral shape gradually changes with phase from a soft single power law to a complex multi-component shape and then to a hard single power law. The spectrum switches from a very hard (Gamma = 0.99 +/- 0.05) to a very soft (Gamma = 3.58 +/- 0.34) single power-law shape within a 0.1-wide phase interval. We identify three independent components. The three shapes are a soft power law, a hard power law and a curved shape. The phase distributions of the normalizations of these spectral components form three decoupled pulse profiles. The soft component peaks around phase 0.4 while the other two components peak around phase 0.8. Pulsar braking indices offer insight into the physics that underlies pulsar spin-down. Only five braking indices have been measured via phase-coherent timing; all measured values are less than 3, the value expected from magnetic dipole radiation. Here we present new measurements for three of the five pulsar braking indices, obtained with phase-coherent timing for PSRs J1846-0258 (n=2.65+/-0.01), B1509-58 (n=2.839+/-0.001) and B0540-69 (n=2.140+/-0.009). We discuss the implications of these results and possible physical explanations for them., 7 pages, 5 figures. Aims: Hete J1900.1-2455 is the seventh known X-ray transient accreting millisecond pulsar and has been in outburst for more than one year. We compared the data on Hete J1900.1-2455 with other similar objects and made an attempt at deriving constraints on the physical processes responsible for a spectral formation. Methods: The broad-band spectrum of the persistent emission in the 2-300 keV energy band and the timing properties were studied using simultaneous INTEGRAL and the publicly available RXTE data obtained in October 2005. The properties of the X-ray bursts observed from Hete J1900.1-2455 were also investigated. Results: The spectrum is well described by a two-component model consisting of a blackbody-like soft X-ray emission at 0.8 keV temperature and a thermal Comptonized spectrum with the electron temperature of 30 keV and Thomson optical depth tau_T ~ 2 for the slab geometry. The source is detected by INTEGRAL up to 200 keV at the luminosity of 5E36 erg/s (assuming a distance of 5 kpc) in the 0.1-200 keV energy band. We have also detected one type I X-ray burst which shows the photospheric radius expansion. The burst occurred at an inferred persistent emission level of ~ 3-4% of the Eddington luminosity. Using the data for all X-ray bursts observed to date from Hete J1900.1-2455, the burst recurrence time is estimated to be about 2 days. No pulsations have been detected either in the RXTE or in the INTEGRAL data which puts interesting constraints on theories of the magnetic field evolution in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries., 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the results of a deep 1.6 Ms INTEGRAL observation of the Cassiopeia region performed from December 2003 to February 2004. Eleven sources were detected with the imager IBIS-ISGRI at energies above 20 keV, including three new hard X-ray sources. Most remarkable is the discovery of hard X-ray emission from the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61, which shows emission up to \~150 keV with a very hard power-law spectrum with photon index Gamma = 0.73 +/- 0.17. We derived flux upper limits for energies between 0.75 MeV and 30 MeV using archival data from the Compton telescope COMPTEL. In order to reconcile the very hard spectrum of 4U 0142+61 measured by INTEGRAL with the COMPTEL upper limits, the spectrum has to bend or break between ~75 keV and ~750 keV. 1E 2259+586, another anomalous X-ray pulsar in this region, was not detected. INTEGRAL and COMPTEL upper limits are provided. The new INTEGRAL sources are IGR J00370+6122 and IGR J00234+6144. IGR J00370+6122 is a new supergiant X-ray binary with an orbital period of 15.665 +/- 0.006 days, derived from RXTE All-Sky Monitor data. Archival BeppoSAX Wide-Field Camera data yielded four more detections. IGR J00234+6144 still requires a proper identification. Other sources for which INTEGRAL results are presented are high-mass X-ray binaries 2S 0114+650, Gamma~Cas, RX J0146.9+6121 and 4U 2206+54, intermediate polar V709 Cas and 1ES 0033+595, an AGN of the BL-Lac type. For each of these sources the hard X-ray spectra are fitted with different models and compared with earlier published results., 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

It is generally accepted that Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs) are magnetars, i.e. neutron stars with extremely high surface magnetic fields ($B > 10^{14}$ G). The origin of these high magnetic fields is uncertain, but a popular hypothesis is that magnetars are born with an initial spin period not much exceeding the convective overturn time (~3ms), which results in a powerful dynamo action, amplifying the seed magnetic field to $> ~10^{15}$ G. Part of this rotation energy is then expected to power the supernova through rapid magnetic braking. It is therefore possible that magnetars creation is accompanied by supernovae that are an order of magnitude more energetic than normal supernovae, provided their initial spin period is ~1 ms. However, we list here evidence that the explosion energies of these supernova remnants associated with AXPs and SGRs -- Kes 73 (AXP 1E 1841-045), CTB 109 (AXP 1E2259+586) and N49 (SGR 0526-66) -- are close to the canonical supernova explosion energy of $10^{51}$~erg, suggesting an initial spin period of > ~5ms. We therefore do not find evidence that magnetars are formed from rapidly rotating proto-neutron stars, allowing for the possibility that they descend from stellar progenitor with high magnetic field cores, and we discuss the merits of both formation scenarios. We present the first phase-coherent measurement of a braking index for the young, energetic rotation-powered pulsar PSR J1846-0258. This 324 ms pulsar is located at the center of the supernova remnant Kes 75 and has a characteristic age of tau_c = 723 years, a spin-down energy of 8.3x10^{36}erg/s, and inferred magnetic field of 4.9x10^{13} G. Two independent phase-coherent timing solutions are derived which together span 5.5 yr of data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. In addition, a partially phase-coherent timing analysis confirms the fully phase-coherent result. The measured value of the braking index, n=2.65+/-0.01, is significantly less than 3, the value expected from magnetic dipole radiation, implying another physical process must contribute to the pulsar's rotational evolution. Assuming the braking index has been constant since birth, we place an upper limit on the spin-down age of J1846-0258 of 884 yr, the smallest age estimate of any rotation-powered pulsar., Comment: Includes major changes to analysis. The analysis of an INTEGRAL AO2 observation of the error contours of the EGRET source 3EG J1621+8203 is presented. The only source found inside the error contours for energies between 20 and 30 keV at 5 sigma detection significance is the FR I radio galaxy NGC 6251. This supports the identification of NGC 6251 with 3EG J1621+8203. The observed flux is higher and softer than observed in the past, but consistent with a variable blazar-like spectral energy distribution., 5 pages, 2 figures. The possible identification by INTEGRAL of the EGRET source 3EG J1736-2908 with the active galactic nucleus GRS 1734-292 is discussed. The latter was discovered in 1990 and later identified with a Seyfert 1 galaxy. At the time of the compilation of the 3rd EGRET Catalog, it was not considered as a possible counterpart of the source 3EG J1736-2908, which remained unidentified. A detailed multiwavelength study of the EGRET error circle is presented, by including archival radio, soft- and hard-X observations, suggesting that GRS 1734-292 could be a likely counterpart of 3EG J1736-2908, even though this poses very interesting questions about the production mechanisms of gamma-rays with energies greater than 100 MeV., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We performed timing and spectral analysis for PSR B1929+10, one of the oldest (about 10^7 years) of the ordinary pulsars detected in X-rays, using archival ROSAT, ASCA and RXTE data. Pulsed emission was detected at a more than five sigma level for combined ROSAT PSPC and unpublished HRI data. Our pulse profile is in agreement with that obtained by Yancopoulos et al. (1994; ROSAT PSPC) but now with better statistics. An investigation of the behaviour of the pulsed signal as a function of energy, based on PSPC data, provides indications that the pulsed fraction is changing with energy. The most important new result from this work is derived from the spectral analysis=2E We found that the combined ROSAT PSPC and ASCA GIS spectrum can satisfactorily be described by a power-law as well as by a double black-body model but not by a single black-body model, as was presented earlier by Yancopoulos et al. (1994; ROSAT) and Wang et al. (1997; ASCA). Fitting the combined ROSAT/ASCA 0.1 - 10 keV spectrum by a power-law model we obtain a photon index of 2.54 +/- 0.12 and a neutral Hydrogen column density N_H towards the source of 9.8_{-1.0}^{+1.4} x 10^20 cm^-2. For a double black-body fit our results are: T_1 = 2.0_{-0.05}^{+0.05} x 10^6 K, T_2 = 6.9_{-0.35}^{+0.23} x 10^6 K, and N_H = 4.43_{-1.12}^{+2.08} x 10^20 cm^-2. In both cases the derived N_H value is higher than that adopted in earlier works, but our result is consistent with the larger distance estimate of 331 +/- 10 pc from new parallax measurements performed by Brisken et al. (2002) and with the Hydrogen distribution measured in the direction of the pulsar (Frisch & York, 1983). No significant pulsed signal is found in the RXTE data.

We report on high-resolution spatial and timing observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With these observations we were able to study a) the possible spatial extent at X-ray energies of the DC source coincident with PSR J0218+4232 in detail (CXO), b) the relative phasing between the X-ray, radio and gamma-ray profiles (CXO and RXTE) and c) the spectral properties at energies beyond 10 keV (RXTE). We found no indications for extended emission at X-ray energies down to ~ 1 arcsec scales and confirmed the presence of a point-like DC-component. The 2 non-thermal pulses in the X-ray profile are found to be aligned with 2 of the 3 pulses visible at radio-frequencies and more importantly with the two gamma-ray pulses seen in the EGRET 100-1000 MeV pulse profile. The latter reduces now the random occurrence probability for the detected gamma-ray signal to ~ 1.E-6, which corresponds to a 4.9 sigma detection significance., Comment: 8 pages,7 figures, accepted for publication in Adv Sp Res: Proceedings of the 34th COSPAR Scientific Assembly held in Houston

We analyze the BeppoSAX measurements of the prompt and afterglow emission of the gamma-ray burst GRB010222. Among 45 GRBs detected with the Wide Field Cameras on BeppoSAX, the 40-700 keV fluence of (9.3+/-0.3)E-5 erg cm-2 is only surpassed by GRB990123. In terms of the isotropic 20-2000 keV energy output of 7.8E53 erg, it ranks third of all GRBs with measured distances. Since this burst is so bright, the data provide complete and valuable coverage up to 65 hr after the event, except for a gap between 3.5 and 8.0 hr. The 2-10 keV flux history shows clear signs of a break which is consistent with a break seen in the optical, and provides supporting evidence for the achromatic nature of the break. An explanation for the break in the context of a collimated expansion is not straightforward. Rather, a model is favored whereby the fireball is braked to the non-relativistic regime quickly (within a fraction of day) by a dense 1E6 cm-3 circumburst medium. This implies that, after a mild beaming correction, GRB010222 may be the most energetic burst observed thus far. The X-ray decay index after the break is 1.33+/-0.04, the spectral index 0.97+/-0.05. The decay is, with unprecedented accuracy, identical to that observed in the optical., Accepted on June 6 for publication in ApJ part I. Publication due in October 2001. The COMPTEL instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is used to measure the locations of gamma-ray bursts through direct imaging of MeV photons. In a comprehensive search, we have detected and localized 29 bursts observed between 1991 April 19 and 1995 May 31. The average location accuracy of these events is 1.25$\arcdeg$ (1$\sigma$), including a systematic error of $\sim0.5\arcdeg$, which is verified through comparison with Interplanetary Network (IPN) timing annuli. The combination of COMPTEL and IPN measurements results in locations for 26 of the bursts with an average ``error box'' area of only $\sim$0.3 deg$^2$ (1$\sigma$). We find that the angular distribution of COMPTEL burst locations is consistent with large-scale isotropy and that there is no statistically significant evidence of small-angle auto-correlations. We conclude that there is no compelling evidence for burst repetition since no more than two of the events (or $\sim$7% of the 29 bursts) could possibly have come from the same source. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the burst locations and either Abell clusters of galaxies or radio-quiet quasars. We present high-sensitivity XMM/LOFAR observations that show for the first time that mode switching extends from radio to X-ray. In pulsar B0943+10, the known changes in radio profile and drift rate are confidently tied to simultaneous changes in X-ray emission.In mode switching, seen in many pulsars, profile and subpulse-drift behavior change almost instantaneously. The mechanism for these drastic changes, or for the bi-stable emission behavior, is not understood; while even for the basic emission mechanism different families of theories (e.g. vacuum gap, or space-charge limited flow models) exist.To discriminate between such models, we carried out a campaign of 42 hours of simultaneous LOFAR/XMM-Newton observations on PSR B0943+10. Through LOFAR's unparalleled low-frequency sensitivity, mode changes were pinpointed to 10-second accuracy. XMM X-ray photons were next separated by the two radio modes. We discovered large modal differences in the X-ray pulsations, flux, and spectral shapes: in the radio-bright mode, no X-ray pulsations are detected – but in the radio-quiet mode, B0943+10 is strongly pulsating in X-ray.

We propose to perform a continuously scanning all-sky survey from 200 keV to 80 MeV achieving a sensitivity which is better by a factor of 40 or more compared to the previous missions in this energy range. The Gamma-Ray Imaging, Polarimetry and Spectroscopy (GRIPS) mission addresses fundamental questions in ESA's Cosmic Vision plan. Among the major themes of the strategic plan, GRIPS has its focus on the evolving, violent Universe, exploring a unique energy window. We propose to investigate $\gamma$-ray bursts and blazars, the mechanisms behind supernova explosions, nucleosynthesis and spallation, the enigmatic origin of positrons in our Galaxy, and the nature of radiation processes and particle acceleration in extreme cosmic sources including pulsars and magnetars. The natural energy scale for these non-thermal processes is of the order of MeV. Although they can be partially and indirectly studied using other methods, only the proposed GRIPS measurements will provide direct access to their primary photons. GRIPS will be a driver for the study of transient sources in the era of neutrino and gravitational wave observatories such as IceCUBE and LISA, establishing a new type of diagnostics in relativistic and nuclear astrophysics. This will support extrapolations to investigate star formation, galaxy evolution, and black hole formation at high redshifts., Comment: to appear in Exp. During the first year of observation by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Crab pulsar was in the field of view of COMPTEL four times. COMPTEL is sensitive to gamma radiation in the energy interval 0.7–30 MeV. The light curves that were obtained for each observation showed slight differences in appearance. A statistical analysis of the signal and the noise in the light curve has been performed to check whether the variation in shape is due to intrinsic source behaviour, which would obviously have theoretical implications, or simply due to statistical variations. The result of this analysis shows the latter to be the case.

The COMPTEL telescope aboard the Compton Gamma‐Ray Observatory, sensitive to low‐energy γ‐rays between about 0.7 and 30 MeV, has detected the pulsed signal of the Vela pulsar (PSR0833‐45) in the 10–30 MeV range with a significance of 12 σ. The two main peaks in the light curve resemble the sharp peaks detected earlier in high‐energy γ‐rays. A combination of timing and spatial analysis, lowering the COMPTEL source detection threshold, enabled the detection of PSR0833‐45 down to 0.75 MeV. The energy spectrum of the total pulsed emission connects smoothly to that measured simultaneously at higher energies by EGRET (and the time‐averaged COS‐B spectrum) and to the OSSE spectrum and ROSAT detection at lower energies. The combined spectrum cannot be represented by a single power law; bends/breaks are required at two or three energies to represent the data from the EGRET high‐energy γ‐rays down to the ROSAT soft X‐rays. International audience; Proposed in response to the ESA call for the third Medium size mission (M3), CAPSiTT is a small mission designed for a 3-year survey of the non-thermal high energy sky from an equatorial LEO orbit. With a large effective area and a very wide field of view, its single instrument, a silicon tracker, provides good imaging, spectroscopic and polarimetric capabilities with a sensitivity 10-100 times better than COMPTEL. Nucleosynthesis and particle acceleration mechanisms in various sites are the main scientific topics addressed by CAPSiTT.

Data of the 1996 outburst of the single-known accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, taken with the Wide Field Cameras (WFCs) on BeppoSAX, are revisited with more complete data coverage and more comprehensive analysis techniques than in a previous report. An additional type-I X-ray burst was identified which occurred at a time when the persistent emission is below the detection limit, roughly 30 days after outburst maximum. This burst is three times longer than the first two bursts, and 50% brighter. It is the brightest burst within the ~1700 type-I bursts detected so far with the WFCs. A spectral analysis of the data reveals a distance to SAX J1808.4-3658 of ~2.5 kpc. This is an update from a previously reported value of 4 kpc. We present the evidence that we have for the presence of oscillations at the pulsar frequency during part of the newly found burst. Such an oscillation would lend support to the idea that the frequency of millisecond burst oscillations in other objects is very close to the neutron star rotation frequency., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The most recent observations of the cosmic microwave background (e.g., WMAP) show that baryons contribute about 4% to the total density of the Universe. However at redshift less than or equal to 1, about half of these baryons have not yet been observed. Cosmological simulations predict that these "missing" baryons should be distributed in filaments, have temperatures of 105 to 107 K and overdensities of a few to hundred times the average baryon density, forming the so-called Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). There is increasing evidence from Chandra and XMM-Newton that the WHIM may indeed exist. However it is clear that to map the morphology of the WHIM and to measure its physical conditions, a completely different class of instruments is required. Measuring the WHIM in emission in the soft X-ray band is a promising option. To detect the relatively weak, extended emission of the WHIM, the instrument should have a large grasp (collecting area times field of view), and an energy resolving power of about 500 at 1 keV is required to separate the emission of these large scale filaments from foreground emission. We discuss a design that includes X-ray mirrors in combination with a large 2D cryogenic detector, which will allow us to map a significant fraction of this gas. Such detector and its read-out based on Frequency Domain Multiplexing, are currently under development at SRON. It seems feasible to build an array of 24 x 24 pixels of TES microcalorimeters with good energy resolution (few eV). This detector will be combined with a mirror design which is based on 2 and 4 reflections and gives a large area (> 500 cm2) over a relatively large field of view. A preliminary study of the mission concept indicates that this can be implemented in a relatively small satellite (total weight 650 kg). While the main goal of this satellite will be to map and study the physical properties of the missing baryons, the instrument's large area and large field of view will also result in major progress in related fields.© (2006) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
