Forest stands in seasonal environments can differ spatially and seasonally in the diversity of fleshy fruits available as resources for fauna. The aim of this study was to quantify spatial and seasonal variation in the richness and abundance of the dominant fleshy-fruited tree species in gallery forests of the Cerrado domain. Tree species composition and abundance were compiled from the literature for 10 gallery forest stands. Data were interpolated and extrapolated by the sample coverage method, using Hill numbers to determine the typical species as well as the most abundant species in each fruiting season. Stands differed in the occurrence of fleshy-fruited tree species and in the number of fleshy-fruited tree individuals. Probabilities for the occurrence of fleshy fruit were similar between in the wet and dry. However, across all stands, species that fruit primarily in the dry season were less common than those that fruit in the wet season. The sharing of fleshy-fruited tree species was low and the most abundant species differed among the studied stands. Fleshy fruits were available all year round and periods of high fruit availability are highly synchronized while periods of low fruit availability were much less so.

O conhecimento da familia Myrtaceae no Mato Grosso do Sul foi tardio em relacao as outras unidades da federacao. Na Flora Brasiliensis foram citadas nove especies para o que e hoje territorio do estado. Myrtaceae apresenta atualmente registro de 81 especies no Mato Grosso do Sul. A importância da familia e variavel em estudos floristicos, sendo em geral maior no Cerrado e menor no Pantanal, podendo se apresentar ate como a segunda familia mais diversa. Ocorrem dez generos: Blepharocalyx O.Berg (uma especie), Calyptranthes Sw. (duas especies), CampomanesiaRuiz & Pav. (seis especies), Eugenia L. (35 especies), Myrcia DC. (21 especies), Myrcianthes O.Berg (uma especie), Myrciaria O.Berg (quatro especies), Pimenta Lindl. (uma especie), Plinia L. (duas especies) e Psidium L. (nove especies). O presente estudo resultou em um incremento de 47 especies e saida de sete especies em relacao a ultima Lista de Especies da Flora do Brasil, resultando em um ganho liquido de 40 especies em relacao a esta listagem.

This study presents the first records of Vriesea friburgensis and Tillandsia polystachia for the central-west region of Brazil. The two species were found in gallery forests of the National Forest of Brasília, Distrito Federal. This conservation unit is located in the core region of the Cerrado domain. This finding extends the number of species of flora of this locality and of the Central-west Region, and also increases the area of distribution of the two species, previously restricted to the northeast, southeast and south of Brazil. Resumo Este estudo apresenta os primeiros registros de Vriesea friburgensis e Tillandsia polystachia para a região centro-oeste do Brasil. As duas espécies foram encontradas em matas de galeria da Floresta Nacional de Brasília, Distrito Federal. Esta unidade de conservação está localizada na região nuclear do domínio Cerrado. Esta descoberta amplia o número de espécies da flora desta localidade e da região centro-oeste, além de aumentar a área de distribuição das duas espécies, anteriormente restrita ao nordeste, sudeste e sul do Brasil.

Campomanesia cavalcantina Soares-Silva & Proenca and Psidium ratterianum Proenca & Soares-Silva (Myrtaceae), two new species from the Brazilian highlands are described and illustrated. Campomanesia cavalcantina is similar to Campomanesia eugenioides (Cambess.) D. Legrand var. eugenioides, but differs from this species in being an hemixyle, by the narrow to broadly elliptic-falcate leaves 1.7 – 4.6 times as long as wide with 8 – 15 lateral veins, by the less densely glandular leaves and flowers, and by the lanceolate, c. 7 mm long bracteoles which are persistent to young fruit stage. Psidium ratterianum appears to be most closely allied to P. australe Cambess. Both species share the hemixyle habit, similar leaf shape, leaf ratio and floral morphology. P. ratterianum differs from that species by its narrow, ascendant, strongly bullate leaves, bracteoles which are persistent in the fruit, expanded, funnel-shaped stigma and smaller, elliptic fruits. Anatomically, Psidium ratterianum differs from other species of Psidium, and from other new-world Myrtaceae (Tribe Myrteae), in that the leaves are amphistomatic, a character known to occur in the Australian genus Leptospermum.

The difficulty of identifying Lauraceae species is well known. The leaf epidermis of 18 species from the Federal District, Brazil, was analyzed to test more characters as an aid to the taxonomy of this family. New anatomical characters are proposed here, such as sinus number, internal angles and number of sides of the common epidermal cells, their arrangement around the trichome base, and the shape and width of the subsidiary cells in relation to the guard cells. Epidermal characters that can aid in the identification of the studied species are: the contour of the common cells on both leaf surfaces and their anticlinal wall width, number of sides of the polygonal cells, sinus number, presence of angles greater than 180°, presence and type of indumentum, common cells with radial arrangement around the trichome base, stomatal position relative to the rest of the epidermis and width of the subsidiary cells in relation to the guard cells. Glabrous and glabrescent leaves are distinguished. Two species have unique characters: Aniba heringeri, with papillae on the abaxial surface, and Cryptocarya moschata, with peculiar horseshoe-shaped subsidiary cells. Characters of the epidermis together with the external leaf morphology are sufficient to distinguish the studied species. Additionally, we report for the first time the occurrence of Mezilaurus crassiramea and Ocotea diospyrifolia for the flora of Federal District, Brazil.

A new species Exostyles godoyensis Soares-Silva & Mansano (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae, Swartzieae), endemic to Parana state in southern Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is distinct from all the other species of Exostyles in having a leaf with up to five leaflets, while the other species have at least seven leaflets per leaf. The new species is distinct from Exostyles amazonica Yakovlev in its longer stamen filaments and ovary stipe and from E. glabra Vogel and E. venusta Schott by its shorter anthers. The floristic and ecological aspects of the tree vegetation of a remnant forest in the Godoy Forest State Park were studied. Two hundred and six native species of the region occur in the park. Comments on ecological aspects, such as dispersion, structure of vegetation and succession of these species, are provided. An analysis of the ecological parameters indicated that the occurrence of late secondary and climax species (55.8%) was greater than that of pioneer (6.8%) and early secondary species (34.5%). This seems to indicate a predominant dependence of biotic factors on the abiotic factors and an advanced stage of succession.

Foi estudada a composição florística e fitossociologia de lha de floresta ciliar, localizada às margens do rio Tibagi, no município de Sapopema, PR. (24º 01'S e 50º 41'W) e 780m de altitude. Para tanto, foi demarcada uma parcela de 100X100m subdividida em 100 subparcelas contíguas de 10X10m, utilizando como critério de inclusão um DAP mínimo de 5cm. Foram amostrados 1560 indivíduos reunidos em 41 famílias, 82 gêneros e 125 espécies. O índice de diversidade (Shannon-Weaner) foi de H'=4,2. As espécies mais importantes no levantamento foram Anadenanthera colubrina, Casearia sylvestris, Luehea divaricata, Esenbeckia febrífuga e Parapiptadenia rigida. As famílias com maior número de indivíduos amostrados foram Fabaceae (214) e Myrtaceae (209), tendo esta apresentado o maior número de espécies (18). It was studied in this paper the floristic composition and the phytosociology of lha of riverine forest, placed at Tibagi riversides, in Sapopema County, PR (24º01'S, 50º41'W), 780m above sea level. For such purpose, a 100 X 100m plot was divided in 100 of the 10X10m contiguous subplots, using a DBH greater or equal to 5cm. 1560 specimens were sampled, gathered in 41 families, 82 genera and 125 species. The diversity index (Shannon-Weaner) was H'=4,2. The most important species were: Anaderanthera colubrina, Casearia sylvestris, Lueliea divaricata, Esenbeckia febrífuga e Parapiptadenia rígida. The families vvith most specimens sampled were Fabaceae (214) and Myrtaceae (209), which had the highest number of species (18).

Flowering species of the herbaceous and shrubby lay er were sampled in a gallery forest at Portal da Ch apada, Alto Paraiso de Goias-GO in the Chapada dos Veadeiros du ring 12 months growing within 4.5 meters on either side of a raised pathway 2.4 Km long. The collections were in cluded to University of Brasilia Herbarium (UB). A total of 138 species (103 genera and 40 families) were recorded; the most species-rich families were Asteraceae (22 ), Poaceae (14), Rubiaceae (12), Fabaceae (11) and Melastomata ceae (7). The richest family in number of genera wa s Asteraceae (19), followed by Poaceae (8), Fabaceae (8) and Rubiaceae (7). The results showed a meaning ful increase in the Chapada dos Veadeiros flora, especi ally considering the herbaceous-shrubby layer of th e gallery forests (223.6%). Despite the richness of the flor a, the number of endemics species in the Goias Stat e was only 1.5%.

Fueron estudiadas las hojas de 18 especies de Lauraceae que crecen en el Distrito Federal (Brasil), con el objetivo de caracterizar sus patrones de venacion e identificar caracteristicas utiles en su diferenciacion taxonomica, para que junto a su morfologia se puedan obtener criterios utiles que ayuden en su identificacion vegetativa. Las hojas fueron diafanizadas, coloreadas y fotografiadas. Los patrones de venacion del segundo, tercero, cuarto y quinto orden fueron descritos e ilustrados para las especies estudiadas, que presentaron una venacion secundaria de tipo broquidodroma o eucamptodromo-broquidodroma, excepto en Crytocarya aschersoniana y Ocotea aciphylla con venacion broquidodroma prominula reticulada. La densidad de areolas se mostro como un buen caracter taxonomico, lo que no ocurrio con el numero de lados que estas poseen. Fueron propuestos los conceptos de nudos y ramas de las venulas y criterios para la clasificacion de sus ramificaciones. La mayoria de las especies poseen venulas ramificadas. Los caracteres analizados, unidos con los morfologicos tales como tipo de indumento, formas de borde, y presencia y/o ausencia de domacios, posibilitaron la diferenciacion de las 18 especies estudiadas, evidenciando la clara importancia de la arquitectura foliar en el reconocimiento taxonomico de especimenes en estado vegetativo.

Myrcia macrocalyx, a new species from Cavalcante, Goiás, Brazil, is here described and illustrated. Additional details on the leaf architecture, geographical distribution, and conservation status of this species are also provided.

During field collections for the doctoral thesis of the first author, a population of Myrceugenia was found in a gallery forest along Bananal stream in the Distrito Federal, Brazil. This population was recognized as a new species related to Myrceugenia glaucescens and M. acutata, separated by 800 km or more from previously known populations of those species in Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states. Specimens were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the leaf architeture was studied in diaphanized leaves.

Myrcia federalis, a new species closely related to M. goyazensis, distinguished by its hirsute flowers and strongly revolute blades, is described for the savannas of Central Brazil, in the Federal District. Additionally to its macromorphological description, leaf architecture and pollen morphology are described and illustrated; a couplet to distinguish it from M. goyazensis, a distribution map, and illustration are also presented.

Instituto de Biologia Resumo: O estudo é o tratamento taxonômico das subtribos Myrciinae e Eugeniinae pertencentes à família Myrtaceae, na bacia hidrográfica do rio Tibagi, Paraná. Esta bacia, a terceira em extensão do Estado, com 25.239 Km2, situa-se na porção centro-Ieste do Estado entre os meridianos 49<> 30'e 510 30'W e os paralelos 220 30 e 250 40'S. Foram realizadas coletas por um período de dois anos, entre os anos de 1994 e 1996, abrangendo todos os municípios da bacia, procurando durante as excursões visitar áreas com vegetação em bom estado de preservação. Os exemplares coletados foram depositados no Herbário FUEL da Universidade Estadual de Londrina, com duplicatas no UB (Universidade de Brasília), ASU (Arizona State University), K (Royal Botanical Garden Kew), MBM (Museu Botânico Municipal de Curitiba), MO (Missouri Botanical Garden), SP (Instituto de Botânica de São Paulo) e UEC (Universidade de Campinas). O levantamento em campo aliado às consultas aos Herbários FUEL, HB_ HUEPG, RUM, MBM, SP, 00, UEC e UPCB, resultou em um total de 75 táxons em 13 gêneros diferentes, assim distribuídos: subtribo Myrciinae - Myrcia o gênero mais numeroso com 22 táxons, Myrceugenia com 7 táxons, Calyptranthes e Gomidesia com três espécies cada e MarUerea com uma única espécie; subtribo Eugeniinae - Eugenia, o maior gênero com 23 espécies, seguido por Myrciaria com 4 espécies; Hexachlamys com três espécies; Myrcianthes, Neomitranthes, PUnia e Siphoneugena com duas espécies cada e Calycorectes com apenas 1 espécie. Ocorrem em florestas, campos, manchas de cerrado, brejos e várzeas. Dos 75 taxa, 73 encontram-se determinadas ao nível específico e 2 ao nível genérico, estas sendo provavelmente espécies novas à serem descritas. É proposta uma nova forma de Myrcia rostrata, M rostrata De. f jlexuosa e feita uma nova combinação, Myrcia venulosa DC. varo dives. São citadas nove novas sinonímias. O trabalho apresenta chaves para todos os 19 gêneros ocorrentes na bacia do rio Tibagi (incluindo as três subtribos da família), chaves para os gêneros em cada subtribo, chave de espécies para 11 gêneros (dois ocorrem com 1 única espécie), e para variedades e formas quando for o caso. São apresentadas descrições e pranchas contendo ramo floral ou frutífero para cada um dos táxons, além de pranchas ilustrativas com detalhes dos gêneros, lista de material examinado, mapas de distribuição geográfica na bacia e dados referentes a fenologia e aos frutos Abstract: This study is the taxonomic treatment of subtribes Myrciinae and Eugeniinae (Myrtaceae), in the rio Tibagi river basin, Paraná, Brazil. This river basin, the third longest in the state, 25.239 Km2 long, is located in the centre-east portion of the State between 4go 30'e 510 30'Wand 220 30' e 250 40'S. Botanical collections were made for two years, between 1994 and 1996, in alI counties in the basin, with a special effort to collect in areas where the vegetation was well-preserved. The material collected was deposited in the FUEL Herbarium, of the Universidade Estadual de Londrina, with duplicates in UB (Universidade de Brasília), ASU (Arizona State University), K (Royal Botanical Garden Kew), MBM (Museu Botânico Municipal de Curitiba), MO (Missouri Botanical Garden), SP (Instituto de Botânica de São Paulo) and UEC (Universidade de Campinas) herbaria. The fieldwork, allied to examining material in the FUEL, HBR, HUEPG, RUM, MBM, SP, UB, UEC and UPCB Herbaria, resulted in a treatment of 75 taxons in 13 different genera, distributed as follows: subtribe Myrciinae - Myrcia, the largest genus, with 22 taxa, Myrceugenia with seven taxa, Calyptranthes and Gomidesia with three species each and Marlierea with a single species; subtribe Eugeniinae - Eugenia, the largest genus with 23 espécies, followed by Myrciaria with four species; HexachJamys with three species; Myrcianthes, Neomitranthes, PUnia and Siphoneugena with two species each and CaJycorectes with a singles species. The species occur in forests, fields, cerrado patches, swamps and other wet habitats. Amongst the 75 taxa, 73 are determined to species and two to genus, these later species are believed to be new. A new form of Myrcia rostrata is proposed, M rostrata DC. f fleruosa and a new combination, Myrcia venu/osa DC. varo dives. Nine names are sinonimized. Keys are furnished for ali 19 genera occurring in the rio Tibagi river basin (as well as for the three subtribes of the family), keys to the genera of each subtribe, and a key for the 11 genera treated (two genera have a single species), and for varieties and forms when extant.
