Abstract

This document summarizes how far the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument (Roman CGI) will go toward demonstrating high-contrast imaging and spectroscopic requirements for potential future exoplanet direct imaging missions, illustrated by the HabEx and LUVOIR concepts. The assessment is made for two levels of assumed CGI performance: (i) current best estimate (CBE) as of August 2020, based on laboratory results and realistic end-to-end simulations with JPL-standard Model Uncertainty Factors (MUFs); (ii) CGI design specifications inherited from Phase B requirements. We find that the predicted performance (CBE) of many CGI subsystems compares favorably with the needs of future missions, despite providing more modest point source detection limits than future missions. This is essentially due to the challenging pupil of the Roman Space Telescope; this pupil pushes the coronagraph masks sensitivities to misalignments to be commensurate with future missions. In particular, CGI will demonstrate active low-order wavefront control and photon counting capabilities at levels of performance either higher than, or comparable to, the needs of future missions., Comment: 10 pages, 3 tables. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formally WFIRST) will be launched in the mid-2020’s with an onboard coronagraph instrument which will serve as a technology demonstrator for exoplanet direct imaging. The Roman Coronagraph will be capable of detecting and characterizing exoplanets and circumstellar disks in visible light at an unprecedented contrast level of ~10-8 or lower. Such a contrast level, which is several magnitudes better than state-of-the-art visible or near-infrared coronagraphs, raises entirely new challenges that will be overcome using a combination of hardware, calibration and data processing. In particular, the Roman Coronagraph will be the first space-based coronagraphic instrument with real-time active wavefront control through the use of large format deformable mirrors, and its EMCCD detector will enable faint signal detection in photon-counting mode. The Roman Coronagraph passed its critical design review successfully in April 2021, and is now well on its path to demonstrate many core technologies at the levels required for future exo-Earth direct imaging missions.

Abstract

Commercially available hot wires/films were used to measure the velocities of evaporated hydrogen or helium gas during cryogenic mixing experiments. Hot wires were found to be too delicate to use in this harsh environment. Hot films were rugged enough to use at cryogenic temperatures even though they failed after a number of thermal cycles. Since the hot films have small aspect ratios, 13.4 and 20, they are quite sensitive to the thermal loading, Tw/Tg, even with a correction for the conduction end loss. In general, although the increase of the Nusselt number with Reynolds number at low temperatures was similar to that at room temperature, there was also a pronounced variation with Tw/Tg over the large range of 1.2 to 12 investigated.

Abstract

This paper describes the Low Temperature Research Facility program now under development at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This program will develop the experiments and cryogenic facility to fly experiments requiring temperatures in the liquid helium range, from the superfluid range (1.6 K) to the critical point (5.2 K). A shuttle facility is planned for 1998. It will be flown about every two years after that time. A free flyer is also being evaluated for the end of the decade or early in the next century. A brief discussion of the quality of micro-gravity available in various carriers is also given.

26. Acoustic composition sensor for cryogenic gas mixtures

Abstract

An acoustic sensor useful for the determination of the composition of a gaseous binary mixture in cryogenic liquid spills has been characterized. One version of the instrument traps a known mixture of helium and nitrogen at ambient temperature in a tube which is interrogated by sonic pulses to determine the speed of sound and hence the composition. Experimental data shows that this sensor is quite accurate. The second version uses two unconfined microphones which sense sound pulses. Experimental data acquired during mixing when liquid nitrogen is poured into a vessel of gaseous helium is presented. Data during transient cooling of the tubular sensor containing nitrogen when the sensor is dipped into liquid nitrogen and during transient warm-up when the sensor is withdrawn are also presented. This sensor is being developed for use in the mixing of liquid cryogens with gas evolution in the simulation of liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen explosion hazards.

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$ ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

32. Turbulent structure in low-concentration drag-reducing channel flows

Abstract

A two-component laser-Doppler velocimeter was used to obtain simultaneous measurements of the velocity components parallel and normal to the wall in two fully developed well-mixed low-concentration drag-reducing channel flows and one turbulent channel flow. For the drag-reducing flows, the average time between bursts was found to increase. Although the basic structure of the fundamental momentum transport event is shown to be the same in these drag-reducing flows, the lower-threshold Reynolds-stress-producing motions were found to be damped, while the higher-threshold motions were not. It is suggested that some strong turbulent motions are needed to maintain extended polymer molecules, which produce a solution with properties that can damp lower threshold turbulence and thereby reduce viscous drag.

Abstract

Experiments simulating mixing of liquid oxygen (LO(2)) and liquid hydrogen (LH(2) have been performed. The non-reactive mixtures were obtained by injecting jets of the oxidizer into a pool of the fuel simulant. Three fluid combinations were tested: LO(2) into liquid helium (LHe), liquid nitrogen (LN(2)) into LHe and LN(2) into LH(2). Experimental observations included flash X-ray and high speed video imaging, hot film anemometry, and thermocouple and diode thermometry. Results showed that the jet fluid stays coherent throughout the mixing process and that peak boiling of the pool fluid occurs shortly after jet impingement. Estimates of bulk density indicate a smaller range of variation than is currently being used for explosive yield calculations., See also ADA235006, Volume 2. Abstract

The basic goals are: To determine the mechanism(s) by which a drag-reducing additive modifies the turbulent momentum transport near a wall; and to develop optimal methods for injecting these additives into wall flows. The structural characteristics of channel flows well downstream of the additive injectors were deduced from two-component laser velocimeter measurements while a mixing length model was developed to predict the wall shear stress of water flows with additive injection. A three beam, two-color laser velocimeter was used to measure simultaneously the velocity components parallel and normal to the wall between the channel centerline and y+ approx. 11 for three channel flows. The baseline case was a fully developed water flow; the second a well mixed drag-reducing flow whose Reynolds number matched that of the water flow; a third was a well mixed drag-reducing flow whose wall shear stress matched that of the water flow. Profiles of the mean and root-mean-square velocities confirmed that the additives modify the buffer region of the flow. The major influence occurred through damping of the fluctuations of the normal velocity component. Eulerian 'burst' detectors were developed by extensions of the quadrant two, VITA and u-level detection methods. When properly extended all three methods yielded an average time between bursts that agreed with previous flow visualization results. In these very dilute drag-reducing flows, the average time between burst increased the same amount as the streak spacing.

Abstract

Laser velocimeter measurements of mean velocities and turbulence parameters were made in a cylindrical simulated dump combustor. Velocity bias errors were eliminated by use of an experimental technique developed in an earlier study. a comparison of mass flux at different downstream locations based on the measured velocity profiles showed good agreement with the inlet mass flux. The measured mean velocity profiles were in good qualitative agreement with predictions based on the 2/E/FIX computer code, although some discrepancies in qualitative values due to code limitations were noted. Experimental and analytical studies of subsonic flow over a backward facing 2-D step and in a cylindrical simulated dump combustor were conducted. A laser velocimeter was used to obtain mean velocities and turbulence quantities. A method for detecting and eliminating velocity bias errors in such measurements was developed. The 2/E/FIX computer code used for numerical modeling predicted the mean velocity field satisfactorily, but was less effective in computing turbulence quantities. 22 páginas, 16 figuras, 6 tablas.-- Planck Science Team: et al., The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity ( ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.
