Working on a corpus composed of images and texts collected in two digital spaces, in Italian and in French, I will question the political and the poetic potential as it is at work in the “writings during the lockdown”: texts produced at the time of the first lockdown, in Italy and in France, in which walking is both the source of the writing activity and the object of the narrative. Because of their capacity to go beyond spatio-temporal boundaries, to insert themselves into multisemiotic assemblages, and to question their solely textual and informational dimension, I will call these texts “excessive” and analyze their different degrees of excess. The focus on the irreducibly experiential and psychedelic, even excessive, dimension of these texts will allow me, by way of conclusion, to make some proposals for a sociolinguistics that is attentive to the experiential and psychedelic dimension of language practices.

In this work, we deal with a robust fitting of a wrapped normal model to multivariate circular data. Robust estimation is supposed to mitigate the adverse effects of outliers on inference. Furthermore, the use of a proper robust method leads to the definition of effective outlier detection rules. Robust fitting is achieved by a suitable modification of a classification-expectation-maximization algorithm that has been developed to perform a maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of a multivariate wrapped normal distribution. The modification concerns the use of complete-data estimating equations that involve a set of data dependent weights aimed to downweight the effect of possible outliers. Several robust techniques are considered to define weights. The finite sample behavior of the resulting proposed methods is investigated by some numerical studies and real data examples.

Steel making industries exhibit extreme working conditions characterized by high temperature, pressure, and production speed as well as intense throughput. Due to high economic and energy investments of the overall production process, an intense and expensive preventive maintenance program is adopted to avoid breakdowns. Steel making process would greatly benefit from a predictive maintenance module able to detect incoming faults from data process analysis. However, due to intense preventive maintenance, available data recording process operations enclose only a few samples of fault events, avoiding the efficient application of classical data driven anomaly detection models. In an attempt to overcome the above mentioned limits, we report the outcome of an industrial research project on data-driven anomaly detection in a steel making production process. The study assesses a fault detection strategy for rotating machines in the hot rolling mill line: we developed an automatic two-step strategy, which combines two statistical methods over the available data set: more precisely, the combination of Re-weighted Minimum Covariance Determinant estimator and Hidden Markov Models helped identify working conditions in a drive reducer of a hot steel rolling mill line and automatically isolate signs of decreasing performance or upcoming failures. The proposed strategy has been validated on real data collected in a steel making plant placed in the South of Italy.

Drawing from a fieldwork conducted on French speaking drag king workshops in Brussels (Belgium), and based on a video recording data, I will focus on walking practices mobilized by participants in bodily gendered transformation practices and approached as gender (de)construction devices. My analysis deals with walking exercises following the make-up activity, through which participants can feel and experiment a new gendered body thanks to locomotive actions and verbal accounts referring to what they experienced. The embodied (i.e. sensorial and kinesthetic) and the experiential dimensions at work in these practices allow us to shed a light on the manufacturing of performativity, i.e. how participants adopt a reflexive stance vis-à-vis of their gendered bodily transformations, a metaperformative competence, and how, in this way, participants position themselves as the scientists and the creators of their own bodily creations.

Abstract In this study, we assess the spectral characteristics of seismic noise at the sites of the Italian Seismic Network and its spatio‐temporal variability. The evaluation of noise is crucial for the assessment of the detection capability of a seismic network. We selected a set of 233 stations, those equipped with broadband velocimeters (with corner period > 40 s) and operating continuously for at least four consecutive years. The analysis was carried out in the frequency band from 0.025 to 30 Hz, in accordance with the seismic sensors bandwidth. We estimated the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the seismic noise for fixed temporal windows and then we calculated the Probability Density Functions (PDF) at each station. Exploiting the large data set available, we have been able to: (a) describe the characteristics of the noise power at each site; (b) investigate both temporal and spatial variations of the background noise, revealing correlations of the noise levels with natural and anthropogenic noise sources; (c) propose an empirical relationship linking the “microseismic” noise (i.e., 0.12–1.2 Hz) with the geographical features of the site hosting the seismic station; (d) establish the baselines of a new seismic noise model that could be considered as a new reference for the Italian territory.

In the biomedical field, there is an ever-increasing number of large, fragmented, and isolated data sources stored in databases and ontologies that use heterogeneous formats and poorly integrated schemes. Researchers and healthcare professionals find it extremely difficult to master this huge amount of data and extract relevant information. In this work, we propose a linked data approach, based on multilayer networks and semantic Web standards, capable of integrating and harmonizing several biomedical datasets with different schemas and semi-structured data through a multi-model database providing polyglot persistence. The domain chosen concerns the analysis and aggregation of available data on neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), a relatively rare type of neoplasm. Integrated information includes twelve public datasets available in heterogeneous schemas and formats including RDF, CSV, TSV, SQL, OWL, and OBO. The proposed integrated model consists of six interconnected layers representing, respectively, information on the disease, the related phenotypic alterations, the affected genes, the related biological processes, molecular functions, the involved human tissues, and drugs and compounds that show documented interactions with them. The defined scheme extends an existing three-layer model covering a subset of the mentioned aspects. A client–server application was also developed to browse and search for information on the integrated model. The main challenges of this work concern the complexity of the biomedical domain, the syntactic and semantic heterogeneity of the datasets, and the organization of the integrated model. Unlike related works, multilayer networks have been adopted to organize the model in a manageable and stratified structure, without the need to change the original datasets but by transforming their data “on the fly” to respond to user requests.

Drawing from fieldwork I conducted in Brussels with a group of drag kings in which I experience myself to perform a male character, and from my practice of dance and performance, I will focus my analysis on what I call “losing the self”. By “losing the self”, I mean a moment in which social actors, in the framework of a gendered and embodied transformational activity, experience to come out from the self and to welcome into one’s own body a desired self, and to becoming something/someone new. The analysis of this moment I experienced in the field, in which the transition from observer to participant status took place, and in which I experienced the transition from an assigned at birth masculinity to a king masculinity, allows me to highlight some central points for gender studies and performance studies, in particular, and for the social sciences, in general: How to think of transformational processes through a multidimensional perspective (i.e. verbal, tactile, visual, material) taking into account its public, reflexive, multimodal and indexical dimensions? Finally, how can we rethink the boundaries between observation and participation, art and life, and to think of science through the lens of experience and becoming?

In this paper, we deal with theoretical and analytical issues raised by the transcription of touching practices. We will focus on both transcription resources and on how these resources are suitable for representing relevant analytical issues in studying touch. In particular, we are faced with methodological and epistemological issues at work with the visual and iconic dimensions of transcription systems and their relation with sensorial modality – touch – that can be, according to the context, purely visual (touch for showing and mapping), tactile (touch for testing and diagnosing), and tactile and visual (touch for orienting and guiding).

This article considers the history of interactionism through the lens of contemporary art, and in particular, performance as it emerged in the 50s and 60s in the United States. In the specific context of this paper, I analyze Charles Goodwin’s work through the work of some contemporary artists (Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Yoko Ono) whose theoretical issues echoes those raised in Goodwin’s work. The objective of this paper is to foster a closer dialogue between contemporary art and interactionism by highlighting five relevant, common key points : a collective approach to speakership, a multisemiotic vision of talk, a procedural perspective on action, a holistic view of multimodality and a focus on creativity in the accomplishment of social practices. The dialogue between the two fields requires an operation of cultural translation and sheds new light on the phenomena under study, which should lead rethinking and historicizing some of our most important analytical categories.

Drawing from a multiplicity of contexts (drag king workshops, consciousness raising groups and artistic performances), I will analyze how touching practices are mobilized and interpreted by social actors as gender (de)construction devices. The issues presented in this paper are both theoretical and analytical. I will propose a theoretical dialogue between two antagonistic traditions in feminism, neo-materialism and postmodernism, and gender, language and sexuality studies around the possible intertwinings between discourse and bodily materiality. I will show how a multimodal approach to gender takes into account what I call a poetic and a politics of tactile experience exceeding the temporality and the spatiality of interactions and to think about gender through the lens of sensoriality, experience and imagination.

In recent years, a growing number of anthropologists challenged the analytical, reflexive, and identity dimensions of fieldwork. A primary issue concerning a polyphonic, categorical, and political vision of ethnographic texts is the interactional negotiation of identities between informants and fieldworkers and its contextualization in fieldwork notes and academic texts. Drawing from fieldwork in a French gay and lesbian parents association, I will analyze how inter-subjectivity is constructed between fieldworkers and participants through the participants’ use of interactional and linguistic devices. This study will propose a vision of fieldwork as a speech event and a reflexive relationship between fieldwork, identities, and data.
