Search

Detecting subsolar objects in black hole binary mergers is considered a smoking gun signature of primordial black holes. Their supposedly vanishing tidal Love number is generically thought to help distinguish them from other subsolar and more deformable compact objects, such as neutron stars. We show that a large and detectable Love number of primordial black holes can be generated in the presence of even small disturbances of the system, thus potentially jeopardizing their discovery. However, such small perturbations are not tightly bound and are therefore disrupted before the mergers. We show that they leave a characteristic signature in the gravitational waveform that could be observed with current and future gravitational wave detectors. Thus, they may still hint towards the primordial nature of the black holes in the merger. Finally, we demonstrate that disregarding possible environmental effects in the matched-filter search for subsolar gravitational wave events can lead to a decreased sensitivity in the detectors., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The tidal Love numbers of self-gravitating compact objects describe their response to external tidal perturbations, such as those from a companion in a binary system, offering valuable insights into their internal structure. For static tidal fields, asymptotically flat black holes in vacuum exhibit vanishing Love numbers in general relativity, even though this property is sensitive to the presence of an external environment. In this work we study the tidal deformability of black holes surrounded by thin accretion disks, showing that the Love numbers could be large enough to mask any effect of modified gravity and to intrinsically limit tidal tests of black-hole mimickers. Furthermore, we investigate the measurability of the tidal parameters with next-generation gravitational wave experiments, like LISA and Einstein Telescope. Tidal interactions play a crucial role in deciphering gravitational wave signals emitted by the coalescence of binary systems. They are usually quantified by a set of complex coefficients which include tidal Love numbers, describing the conservative response to an external perturbation. In the static case, these are found to vanish exactly for asymptotically flat black holes in general relativity in four spacetime dimensions, and recently they have been generalized to dynamical interactions. In the context of response theory, the retarded Green's function provides the complete description of the behavior of dynamical systems. In this work we investigate the relation between Love numbers and Green's functions, and highlight the relevance of radiation reaction effects to their connection. Fermion soliton stars are a consistent model of exotic compact objects which involve a nonlinear interaction between a real scalar field and fermions through a Yukawa term. This interaction results in an effective fermion mass that depends upon the vacuum structure in the scalar potential. In this work we investigate the tidal deformations of fermion soliton stars and compute the corresponding tidal Love numbers for different model parameters. Furthermore, we discuss the existence of approximate universal relations for the electric and magnetic tidal deformabilities of these stars, and compare them with other solutions of general relativity, such as neutron stars or boson stars. These relations for fermion soliton stars are less universal than for neutron stars, but they are sufficiently different from the ordinary neutron star case that a measurement of the electric and magnetic tidal Love numbers (as potentially achievable by next-generation gravitational wave detectors) can be used to disentangle these families of compact objects. Throughout the cosmic history, primordial black holes may experience an efficient phase of baryonic mass accretion from the surrounding medium. While the realm of accretion physics is marked by numerous uncertainties, and a comprehensive understanding remains elusive, recent investigations have delved into this area, exploring its implications for the cosmological evolution of these compact objects. Notably, primordial black holes could experience characteristic growths of their masses and spins, accompanied by the emission of radiation, ultimately responsible for feedback effects that could weaken the efficiency of the process. The theory of superfluid dark matter is characterized by self-interacting sub-eV particles that thermalize and condense to form a superfluid core in galaxies. Massive black holes at the center of galaxies, however, modify the dark matter distribution and result in a density enhancement in their vicinity known as dark matter spikes. The presence of these spikes affects the evolution of binary systems by modifying their gravitational wave emission and inducing dynamical friction effects on the orbiting bodies. In this work, we assess the role of dynamical friction for bodies moving through a superfluid core enhanced by a central massive black hole. As a first step, we compute the dynamical friction force experienced by bodies moving in a circular orbit. Then, we estimate the gravitational wave dephasing of the binary, showing that the effect of the superfluid drag force is beyond the reach of space-based experiments like LISA, contrarily to collisionless dark matter, therefore providing an opportunity to distinguish these dark matter models., Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures. v2: matching version published in JCAP

In the recent years, primordial black holes (PBHs) have emerged as one of the most interesting and hotly debated topics in cosmology. Among other possibilities, PBHs could explain both some of the signals from binary black hole mergers observed in gravitational wave detectors and an important component of the dark matter in the Universe. Significant progress has been achieved both on the theory side and from the point of view of observations, including new models and more accurate calculations of PBH formation, evolution, clustering, merger rates, as well as new astrophysical and cosmological probes. In this work, we review, analyse and combine the latest developments in order to perform end-to-end calculations of the various gravitational wave signatures of PBHs. Different ways to distinguish PBHs from stellar black holes are emphasized. We discuss the non-linear corrections entering in the calculation of the primordial black hole abundance from the non-linear radiation transfer function and the determination of the true physical horizon crossing. We show that the current standard techniques to calculate the abundance of primordial black holes suffer from uncertainties and argue that the primordial black hole abundance may be much smaller than what routinely considered. This would imply, among other consequences, that the interpretation of the recent pulsar timing arrays data from scalar-induced gravitational waves may not be ruled out because of an overproduction of primordial black holes., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. v2: matching published version

Tidal Love numbers describe the linear response of a compact object under the presence of external tidal perturbations, and they are found to vanish exactly for black holes within General Relativity. In this paper we investigate the tidal deformability of neutral black holes when non-linearities in the theory are taken into account. As a case in point, we consider scalar tidal perturbations on the black hole background, and find that the tidal Love numbers may be non vanishing depending on the scalar interactions in the bulk theory. The Einstein Telescope (ET), the European project for a third-generation gravitational-wave detector, has a reference configuration based on a triangular shape consisting of three nested detectors with 10 km arms, where in each arm there is a `xylophone' configuration made of an interferometer tuned toward high frequencies, and an interferometer tuned toward low frequencies and working at cryogenic temperature. Here, we examine the scientific perspectives under possible variations of this reference design. We perform a detailed evaluation of the science case for a single triangular geometry observatory, and we compare it with the results obtained for a network of two L-shaped detectors (either parallel or misaligned) located in Europe, considering different choices of arm-length for both the triangle and the 2L geometries. We also study how the science output changes in the absence of the low-frequency instrument, both for the triangle and the 2L configurations. Superfluid dark matter, consisting of self-interacting light particles that thermalize and condense to form a superfluid in galaxies, provides a novel theory that matches the success of the standard $\Lambda$CDM model on cosmological scales while simultaneously offering a rich phenomenology on galactic scales. Within galaxies, the dark matter density profile consists of a nearly homogeneous superfluid core surrounded by an isothermal envelope. In this work we compute the density profile of superfluid dark matter around supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies. Motivated by events in which black holes can lose their environment due to tidal interactions in a binary system, we develop a waveform model in which the tidal deformability interpolates between a finite value (dressed black hole) at relatively low frequency and a zero value (naked black hole) at high frequency. We then apply this model to the example case of a black hole dressed with an ultralight scalar field and investigate the detectability of the tidal Love number with the Einstein Telescope. The Weak Gravity Conjecture indicates that extremal black holes in the low energy effective field theory should be able to decay. This criterion gives rise to non-trivial constraints on the coefficients of higher-order derivative corrections to gravity. In this paper, we investigate the tidal deformability of neutral black holes due to higher-order derivative corrections. As a proof of concept, we consider a correction of cubic order in the Riemann curvature tensor. The tidal Love numbers of neutral black holes receive leading-order corrections from higher-order derivative terms, since black holes in pure General Relativity have vanishing tidal Love number. We show that heavy primordial black holes may originate from much lighter ones if the latter are strongly clustered at the time of their formation. We dedicate this thesis to the study of signatures coming from the primordial epochs of the universe. We will focus in particular on Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may be formed from perturbations generated during inflation and might comprise a fraction of the dark matter in the universe. In the first part of the thesis, we will address the PBH properties at the time of formation, that are their masses, spins and abundance, and investigate the generation of Gravitational Wave (GW) signals during their production. In the second part, we will describe the PBHs evolution across the cosmic history due to their assemble in binaries, phases of baryonic mass accretion and clustering effects. We will then discuss GW signatures coming from their coalescence, compare these predictions with present GW data detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) and assess the role of future GW experiments like 3G detectors and LISA in discovering these objects. Finally, in the third part, we will investigate some aspects of the interplay between black holes and fundamental physics in the early universe, focusing on the role of GWs to shed light on their properties., Comment: 263 pages. The Standard Model Higgs potential becomes unstable at large Higgs field values where its quartic coupling becomes negative. While the tunneling lifetime of our current electroweak vacuum is comfortably longer than the age of the universe, quantum fluctuations during inflation might push the Higgs over the barrier, forming patches which might be lethal for our universe. We study the cosmological evolution of such regions and find that, at least in the thin wall approximation, they may be harmless as they collapse due to the backreaction of the Higgs itself. The presence of the Standard Model Higgs instability can provide a novel mechanism to end inflation and to reheat the universe through the evaporation of the black holes left over by the collapse of the Higgs bubbles. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of GWs can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

We investigate the sensitivity of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to the anisotropies of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB). We first discuss the main astrophysical and cosmological sources of SGWB which are characterized by anisotropies in the GW energy density, and we build a Signal-to-Noise estimator to quantify the sensitivity of LISA to different multipoles. We then perform a Fisher matrix analysis of the prospects of detectability of anisotropic features with LISA for individual multipoles, focusing on a SGWB with a power-law frequency profile. We compute the noise angular spectrum taking into account the specific scan strategy of the LISA detector. We analyze the case of the kinematic dipole and quadrupole generated by Doppler boosting an isotropic SGWB. We find that $\beta\, \Omega_{\rm GW}\sim 2\times 10^{-11}$ is required to observe a dipolar signal with LISA. The detector response to the quadrupole has a factor $\sim 10^3 \,\beta$ relative to that of the dipole. The characterization of the anisotropies, both from a theoretical perspective and from a map-making point of view, allows us to extract information that can be used to understand the origin of the SGWB, and to discriminate among distinct superimposed SGWB sources., Comment: 48 page + appendices, 13 figures

Primordial black holes possibly formed in the early universe could provide a significant fraction of the dark matter and would be unique probes of inflation. A smoking gun for their discovery would be the detection of a subsolar mass compact object. We argue that extreme mass-ratio inspirals will be ideal to search for subsolar-mass black holes not only with LISA but also with third-generation ground-based detectors such as Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope. These sources can provide unparalleled measurements of the mass of the secondary object at subpercent level for primordial black holes as light as ${\cal O}(0.01)M_\odot$ up to luminosity distances around hundred megaparsec and few gigaparsec for LISA and Einstein Telescope, respectively, in a complementary frequency range. We calculate the exact formation probability of primordial black holes generated during the collapse at horizon re-entry of large fluctuations produced during inflation, such as those ascribed to a period of ultra-slow-roll. We show that it interpolates between a Gaussian at small values of the average density contrast and a Cauchy probability distribution at large values. The corresponding abundance of primordial black holes may be larger than the Gaussian one by several orders of magnitude. With several dozen binary black hole events detected by LIGO/Virgo to date and many more expected in the next few years, gravitational-wave astronomy is shifting from individual-event analyses to population studies. Using the GWTC-2 catalog, we perform a hierarchical Bayesian analysis that for the first time combines several state-of-the-art astrophysical formation models with a population of primordial black holes (PBHs) and constrains the fraction of a putative subpopulation of PBHs in the data. We find that this fraction depends significantly on the set of assumed astrophysical models. While a primordial population is statistically favored against certain competitive astrophysical channels, such as globular clusters and nuclear stellar clusters, a dominant contribution from the stable-mass-transfer isolated formation channel drastically reduces the need for PBHs, except for explaining the rate of mass-gap events like GW190521. The tantalizing possibility that black holes formed after inflation are contributing to LIGO/Virgo observations could only be verified by further reducing uncertainties in astrophysical and primordial formation models, and it may ultimately be confirmed by third-generation interferometers., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. v3: matching published version

Primordial black holes could have been formed in the early universe from non linear cosmological perturbations re-entering the cosmological horizon when the Universe was still radiation dominated. Starting from the shape of the power spectrum on superhorizon scales, we provide a simple prescription, based on the results of numerical simulations, to compute the threshold $\delta_c$ for primordial black hole formation. Our procedure takes into account both the non linearities between the Gaussian curvature perturbation and the density contrast and, for the first time in the literature, the non linear effects arising at horizon crossing, which increase the value of the threshold by about a factor two with respect to the one computed on superhorizon scales., Comment: 15 pages, 9 Figures. Primordial black holes (PBHs) might be formed in the early Universe and could comprise at least a fraction of the dark matter. Using the recently released GWTC-2 dataset from the third observing run of the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration, we investigate whether current observations are compatible with the hypothesis that all black hole mergers detected so far are of primordial origin. We constrain PBH formation models within a hierarchical Bayesian inference framework based on deep learning techniques, finding best-fit values for distinctive features of these models, including the PBH initial mass function, the fraction of PBHs in dark matter, and the accretion efficiency. The presence of several spinning binaries in the GWTC-2 dataset favors a scenario in which PBHs accrete and spin up. Tensor non-Gaussianities are a key ingredient to test the symmetries and the presence of higher spin fields during the inflationary epoch. Indeed, the shape of the three point correlator of the graviton is totally fixed by the symmetries of the de Sitter stage and, in the case of parity conservation, gets contributions only from the ordinary gravity action plus a higher derivative term called the (Weyl)$^3$ action. We discuss current and future bounds on the three point tensor contribution from the (Weyl)$^3$ term using cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectra. Our results indicate that forthcoming experiments, such as LiteBIRD, CMB-S4 and CORE, will detect the presence of the (Weyl)$^3$ term if $M_p^4 L^4 \sim 10^{17} r^{-4}$, where $L$ parametrizes the strength of the (Weyl)$^3$ term and $r$ is the tensor-to-scalar ratio, which corresponds to $L\gtrsim 3.2 \times 10^5 M_p^{-1}$, while the current upper limit is $M_p^4 L^4 = (1.1 \pm 4.0) \times 10^{19} r^{-4}$ (68%CL)., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; version matching publication in PRD

We explore the possibility that Dark Matter is the lightest hadron made of two stable color octet Dirac fermions ${\cal Q}$. The cosmological DM abundance is reproduced for $M_{\cal Q}\approx 12.5$ TeV, compatibly with direct searches (the Rayleigh cross section, suppressed by $1/M_{\cal Q}^6$, is close to present bounds), indirect searches (enhanced by ${\cal Q}{\cal Q}+\bar{\cal Q}\bar{\cal Q}\to {\cal Q}\bar{\cal Q}+{\cal Q}\bar{\cal Q}$ recombination), and with collider searches (where ${\cal Q}$ manifests as tracks, pair produced via QCD). Hybrid hadrons, made of $\cal Q$ and of SM quarks and gluons, have large QCD cross sections, and do not reach underground detectors. Their cosmological abundance is $10^5$ times smaller than DM, such that their unusual signals seem compatible with bounds.
