Although the asynchronous modality of online learning has gained popularity, little is known about its success among the Orthodox Jewish population. This qualitative research action research involved 10 semi-structured interviews conducted with students at a secular and non-sectarian university. Participants were all Orthodox Jewish males and all current students in an Orthodox Jewish learning environment (yeshiva) and simultaneously at an asynchronous secular learning environment. The following four themes were identified from the 10 participants: (1) flexibility of academic schedule, (2) more time for separate Jewish studies in a yeshiva setting, (3) time for outside friends, and (4) independence. Benefits of asynchronous learning supports outside learning activities and development of analytical skills. Challenges incorporating more personal interactions among students and instructors require further consideration.

The study examined influences of alcohol, social feedback, and drinking experience upon performance, performance awareness, and awareness of intoxication. 24 subjects were selected on the basis of drinking experience. All subjects consumed either a placebo or an alcoholic beverage, i.e., target blood-alcohol concentration of .05% or .10%, prior to each of three experimental sessions. Within groups, subjects were paired and completed a series of cognitive and psychomotor tasks. During each session subjects evaluated both their own and their partner's performance and degree of intoxication. A series of correlations between performance or measures of blood-alcohol concentration and judgments determined relative awareness. Alcohol significantly impaired performance, with inexperienced drinkers being significantly more impaired than experienced drinkers. All groups over-estimated their blood-alcohol concentration, but inexperienced drinkers evaluated themselves as highly intoxicated. Subjects generally under-estimated alcohol impairment and correlations showed awareness decreased as blood-alcohol concentration increased. The implications of the research to drinking/driving problems were discussed.

The effects of alcohol and performance feedback on reaction time, judgments of response speed, and awareness of performance were examined with 15 male subjects. It was suggested that the dose of alcohol which impaired performance would also reduce the awareness of the impairment. In response to extrafoveal visual signals, a series of RTs and response-speed judgments were recorded over three experimental sessions which differed in target blood alcohol concentration, i.e., placebo, .05, .10. The spurious performance feedback presented to five subjects in each of three groups represented either fast, average, or slow RTs. Data support the hypothesis that alcohol impairs both performance and performance awareness. In all groups alcohol significantly increased RTs and significantly impaired the accuracy of response speed judgments. The measures of awareness, i.e., correlations between RTs and response speed judgments, showed that alcohol and spurious feedback significantly impaired performance awareness.

• Alseroxylon (derived from Rauwolfia serpentina) was administered in alternate courses with an identical placebo tablet to three groups of patients. Of these, 50 had symptoms predominantly vascular, 50 were classified as having psychosomatic syndromes, and 10 were included as normal subjects for comparison. A daily dose of 4 mg. was arrived at as having satisfactory therapeutic effects with a minimum of undesired side-effects.The vascular effects proved difficult to interpret. In 20 hypertensive subjects the individual improvement was not related to the reductions in blood pressure and heart rate, and in 15 patients with angina pectoris the alseroxylon seemed to be no more effective than the placebo preparation.All subjects with psychosomatic syndromes characterized by tension states improved. Of 15 who improved on therapy, 7 relapsed during placebo administration while 8 maintained their gain through the placebo period; this was interpreted as an instance of the therapeutic prolongation pattern encountered in other phases of the investigation. None of the patients with depressions, hysteria, or hypochondriasis was helped. In this series alseroxylon was most effective in managing the psychophysiological manifestations of tension states.

This report presents a case of Guillain-Barré syndrome that responded markedly to intravenous corticotropin (ACTH) therapy. To our knowledge there are only two other reports of the use of corticotropin in this condition at the time of this writing.1REPORT OF A CASEA 22-year-old married staff sergeant was admitted to the U. S. Air Force Hospital, at Fairchild, Wash., for the first time on May 26, 1952, complaining of numbness of the extremities. The patient stated on admission that he had been perfectly well until two weeks prior to his admission when he noticed one morning on awakening that there was definite numbness and tingling in the palms of both hands. The following day he noticed numbness of the skin of both feet and ankles; this progressed to just below the knees bilaterally. TO THE EDITOR:— We would like to draw attention to a discrepancy in the lead summary of our article, "Central Nervous System and Cardiovascular Effects of Rauwolfia Serpentina," that appeared in the Feb. 25, 1956, issue of The Journal, page 622. This summary was not prepared by us, nor did we have the opportunity to review it prior to publication. The major point in question is the statement in the summary that "in 15 patients with angina pectoris the alseroxylon seemed to be no more effective than the placebo preparation." Our findings, as presented in the text of the article, were quite to the contrary. In the second paragraph on page 626 we stated that "12 of the 15 subjects had improved with therapy."
