2. Conceptualising Scientific Theory-Law Relationship among Pre-Service Teachers with Different Academic Abilities in Science

Abstract

For learners to achieve science literacy and become effective citizens who can make informed judgement on science-related issues in their daily lives, many studies have called for robust understanding of Nature of Science (NOS) among science learners. This study echoed the same sentiment, focusing on an aspect of NOS--the relationship between scientific theories and laws, among first year pre-service teachers. In this phenomenographic study, 10 participants were involved to address two research questions, which are (1) What are the varied ways first-year pre-service teachers experienced NOS, specifically pertaining to the relationship between scientific theories and laws? (2) What is the variation in conceptions held by first-year pre-service teachers about the scientific theory-law relationship based on their academic ability in science? The findings suggest that the participants still conceptualise science knowledge as an objective epistemology, with 2 main categories of how theory-law relationship can be conceptualised. It was also found that there is no difference in terms of conceptualising these NOS aspects among participants of different academic science abilities. This paper also discusses the findings in relation to the current literature and provides some implications to the teacher preparatory programmes.

Abstract

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is designed to universalise education, bringing many benefits. However, one of the weaknesses of MOOC is that it lacks human touch as learners mainly interact with the content instead. Various research has been done where MOOC is incorporated into a blended learning strategy (bMOOC). However, there is a lack of research in determining the effectiveness of each MOOC component in a blended learning course. Hence, this study looks into the effectiveness of bMOOC design and how the bMOOC components help learners understand the course better. The paper defines bMOOC, its types, models and bMOOC components. The course Legal Studies in Construction (CMA443) was selected. A survey of Construction Management students who had undergone the bMOOC was done to determine the effectiveness of the bMOOC in helping them master the subject. The result indicates a positive effect of bMOOC among the learners. It is found that the MOOC design complies with the Blended Learning requirements. Meanwhile, face-to-face interaction increases learners' engagement. The finding of this study highlighted the importance of the bMOOC guideline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Virtue education is an effective way to cultivate youth's values through their day-to-day learning activities. However, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness due to the implicit and accumulative property of virtue education, which is coherently consistent with self-efficacy. Thus, a processive evaluation model for Business English (BE) was designed, in which, virtue education is divided into three dimensions, and their coherence with self-efficacy is supported by literature. A 3-level index system was constructed based on CIPP. As a core component of this evaluation system, a bilingual 35-item College Academic Self-efficacy Inventory from Virtue Perspective (CASI-V) was developed, which is derived from CASI. The reliability and validity analysis were then conducted to test the quality of the scale. The results show that the instrument is qualified to be used in subsequent research. Abstract

Technology has become important and marks its existence in almost everyone lives. With the rapid changes in the world of technologies and the enhanced use of ICT in our everyday lives, it is not surprising when the use of ICT in education has captured the attention of the educators and the world. Previous studies have shown that ICT bring positive effects on the students' achievement. Lots of studies have their focus on the ICT integration in the education of students from rural community. But limited studies are found on the ICT in the education of indigenous students. This study intended to fill in the gap by focusing on the view of indigenous students toward the importance of ICT in learning English. Indigenous students from three districts in Pahang state of Malaysia were involved consist of 94 students. Quantitative approach were employed with questionnaires were used as an instrument. Findings revealed that indigenous students have low ICT competence but they have shown positive attitude towards the use of ICT in teaching and learning. It is also shown that the level of ICT use in classroom is still low and surprisingly most of them preferred to have Internet-related activities in learning English. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now an essential part of tertiary education around the world. Through the use of ICT, students benefit more from their learning through seamless communication and synchronous knowledge interchange with others, be it on or off campus. To ensure that ICT can be integrated effectively into students' learning, there is a need to identify students' level and capability of ICT usage. Given the differences that may exist in the levels of ICT familiarity for Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) students who come from diverse backgrounds, there is a need to study the use of ICT among the students in order to effectively plan for lessons integrating ICT. This survey examines the usage of ICT among UiTM Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) students in their third or fourth semesters. The study covers the availability of ICT, use of ICT at home, use of ICT at school and attitudes towards computers. It was found that students are familiar with ICT and that they have positive attitudes towards using ICT for personal and educational purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
