ABSTRACT: Ionophores are antibiotics frequently used in animals of production. The most common are monensin, salinomycin, narasin, and lasalocid. The equine species is highly susceptible to ionophores poisoning. The present study aimed to analyze the serum use of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and the anti-troponin C immunohistochemistry (IHC) technique (anti-cTnC) as a diagnostic tool for cardiac injuries in horses spontaneously poisoned by salinomycin. Seven horses were affected by a disease lasting for 6-72 hours. Three horses recovered. The primary morphological lesions reported in the four necropsied horses that died spontaneously were necrosis of the myocardium and skeletal muscle. Immunohistochemistry for anti-cTnC was performed in selected sections of the cardiac muscle from the equine submitted for necropsy. A decrease in cTnC expression in the cytoplasm of cardiomyocytes was noticed in all four necropsied horses. Samples of serum from six horses tested for cardiac troponin I levels; the most expressive values were mainly in horses with more severe cardiac histological lesions. The serum detection of cTnI can be considered a good marker to determine cardiac damage in horses intoxicated with salinomycin with a clinical evolution of 48 hours or more. The anti-cTnC IHC aided in the detection of cardiac injury in horses independent of clinical evolution.

ABSTRACT: Intracranial tumors occurring in specific brain regions, such as the cerebellopontine angle, may be associated with cranial nerve dysfunction and dysphagia in humans and animals. Although dysphagia is a known risk factor for pneumonia, only postoperative pneumonia has been investigated in veterinary medicine. This study aimed to describe the clinical and pathological features of dogs with untreated intracranial meningiomas and concomitant pneumonia. Data from post-mortem examination registries from 2011 to 2021 were used (n=23). The frequency of pneumonia and other characteristics were compared between dogs with meningiomas in the ventral rhombencephalon region (VR group; n=13) and those with meningiomas in other intracranial sites (OIS group; n=10). The frequency of pneumonia was higher in the VR group than in the OIS group (n=5 vs. n=0; P=0.039). Plaque-like lesions were also more common in the VR group than in the OIS group (P=0.012). Dogs with concomitant pneumonia had cerebellopontine angle (n=3) and basilar meningiomas (n=2), mainly plaque-like lesions extending to or from other brain areas. In dogs with concomitant pneumonia, meningiomas had invasive (n=5) and compressive (n=3) growth behaviors and nerve roots involved in the swallowing process were frequently affected. Microscopically, these meningiomas were classified as atypical (n=4) and meningiomas (n=1). The reported clinical signs included anorexia (n=3), adipsia (n=1), and dysphagia (n=1). Our findings suggest untreated dogs with ventral rhombencephalon meningiomas may develop cranial nerve damage and aspiration pneumonia.

ABSTRACT: The increase in the commercialization of sheep products requires an equivalent improvement in flock health and rapid disease identification. Data regarding the cause of death in sheep were reviewed from the database of the “Setor de Patologia Veterinária” from the “Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul”, from January 2004 and December 2019. Epidemiological features, such as breed, sex, and age, in addition to the clinical and pathological features, were analyzed. During this period, tissues from 523 sheep were evaluated, in which a conclusive diagnosis was obtained in 457 (87%) of the cases. The majority of sheep were from the metropolitan mesoregion of Porto Alegre. The most common breed was Texel 171/523 (33%). From all the conclusive diagnoses, 158/457 (35%) corresponded to infectious non-parasitic diseases, 117/457 (26%) were caused by toxic etiology, 95/457 (21%) were infectious parasitic diseases, 42/457 (9%) were included in the nutritional and metabolic category, 38/457 (8%) were in the “others” category, and 7/457 (1.5%) were congenital defects. The age of sheep included in this study ranged from 1 day to 7 years. Among cases with conclusive diagnosis, the main cause of death was haemonchosis with 83/457 (18%) of cases, followed by pneumonia 29/457 (6%), Baccharis sp. poisoning 25/457 (5%), and bluetongue 22/457 (5%).

Previous research revealed the feline skin bacterial microbiota to be site-specific and the fungal microbiota to be individual-specific. The effect of other factors, such as genotype and environment, have not yet been studied in cats, but have been shown to be potentially important in shaping the cutaneous microbiota of other animals. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of these factors on the bacterial and fungal microbiota of feline skin and oral cavity. The influence of genotype was assessed through the analysis of different cat breeds, and the influence of environment through comparison of indoor and outdoor cats. DNA was extracted from skin and oral swabs, and bacterial and fungal next-generation sequencing were performed. Analysis of the skin microbiota of different cat breeds revealed significant differences in alpha diversity, with Sphynx and Bengal cats having the most diverse communities. Many taxa were found to be differentially abundant between cat breeds, including Veillonellaceae and Malassezia spp. Outdoor environment exposure had considerable influence on beta diversity, especially in the oral cavity, and resulted in numerous differentially abundant taxa. Our findings indicate that the oral bacterial microbiota and both fungal and bacterial microbiota of feline skin are influenced by breed, and to a lesser degree, environment.

The manuscript "Eurytrematosis: An emerging and neglected disease in South Brazil" discusses some aspects of Eurytrema sp . fluke as an animal pathogen and based in some aspects of the parasitism in cattle and the life cycle of Eurytrema sp . Authors suggest the possibility of human infection, once there is no research on this subject in Brazil. In human cases reported, the mechanism of infection was not disclosed, so it keeps the discussion opened. Although we focused on animal eurytrematosis, we speculated the possibility of human infection by Eurytrema sp . in Brazil, but after all, the only way to determine it, would be a study searching for people infected through coprological or serological tests., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest.
