One of the most recognized decorations of the pick-up technique is the millefiori glass, which has been commonly attributed to Venetian production. However, Portugal is the country where the largest known assemblage of this type of glass artefact has been studied and published. In this work, two important archeological contexts were selected: (1) Santa Clara-a-Velha monastery (SCV) and (2) São João de Tarouca monastery (SJT). The fragments selection was made based on the diversity of decorative motifs, colors, and original forms that has been associated with Portuguese production. The compositional characterization was conducted by performing micro-particle-induced X-ray emission (µ-PIXE) mapping, which facilitated the visualization of the distribution of different oxides across the different glass layers and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to obtain the major, minor, and trace elements composition, including rare earth elements (REEs) to determine which kind of raw materials were used. Additionally, µ-Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate the opacifiers, while UV–Visible spectroscopy was used to study which chromophores are presented in the glass samples. All the analyzed glass layers can be considered to be of a soda–lime–silica type, and four different geological patterns (from GP1 to GP4) were detected and reported. This result can indicate that these objects were made by using silica sources taken from four different geological settings. Interestingly, the GP3 represents about 41% of the analyzed glass fragments and is compatible with the pattern detected in some production wastes found in two different archeological contexts located in Lisbon, which reinforces the veracity of the theory that this GP can be attributed to a Portuguese production. On the other hand, GP1 was probably attributed Granada provenance.

Urban sprawl poses a significant threat to urban stream water quality due to impermeabilization, reduced vegetation cover, and the release of diffuse pollutants. This study evaluates water quality in seven catchments in Santo André, SP, considering seasonality. Nutrient concentrations and in situ measurements were taken during both dry and rainy seasons. Comparisons were made using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. Streams showed significant differences in relation to water quality parameters. The Carapetuba, Jundiaí, and Apiaí streams were most adversely affected, underscoring the need for urgent water quality intervention (water conductivity above 500 μS/cm, dissolved oxygen below 2 mg/L, total dissolved carbon above 50 mg/L, and total dissolved nitrogen above 25 mg/L). Significant differences were observed across seasons. The dry season showed elevated temperatures (above 25 °C) and increased total dissolved carbon (above 50 mg/L) and nitrogen concentrations (above 30 mg/L), indicating reduced dilution effects from rainfall and heightened organic contamination. Conversely, the wet season demonstrated lower nutrient concentrations, emphasizing seasonal dynamics. Sustained, long-term monitoring of urban streams in Santo André and the implementation of sewage collection and treatment in irregular settlements are recommended. These measures are essential to mitigate the adverse impacts of urban expansion on water quality.

The thermal performance and energy efficiency of buildings are critical factors in achieving sustainable energy systems as energy needs for heating and cooling are expected to represent more than 50% of global final energy consumption. This study analyzes conventional renewable energy systems for heating and cooling in buildings, focusing on strategies for developing net-zero-energy buildings. This review covers the integration of renewable energy, the use of intelligent energy management systems, and the optimization of thermal processes. It also compares various systems based on their advantages and limitations and analyzes emerging trends in the thermal management of buildings in different climate zones. The synthesis of recent literature highlights practical recommendations for achieving high thermal performance in buildings, including the importance of selecting appropriate energy systems based on local climatic conditions, optimizing system efficiency, and taking advantage of new materials and advanced technologies. This review aims to contribute to promoting sustainable construction practices with the integration of renewable energy sources and improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

This note presents two new records of parasitoidism in the nest of the subsocial wasp’ species Zethus (Zethoides) miniatus Saussure, 1858. The nests were collected in two different localities in the Neotropical Savanna - “cerrado” (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Two species from different insect orders were recorded parasitizing each of the nests. The parasitoid wasp Brachymeria paraguayensis (Brèthes, 1916) (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae); and the bee fly Anthrax oedipus Fabricius, 1805 (Diptera: Bombyliidae). Our note reinforces the importance of new studies describing the biology of vespids, especially in relation to natural enemies and ecological interactions.

Abstract Background The increasing interest in platelet‐based therapies has underwritten the development of novel veterinary regenerative treatments. The haemoderivative platelet‐rich fibrin (PRF) comprises abundant concentrations of platelets and leucocytes, above the physiologic baseline, which are considered essential elements for wound regeneration, stimulating local angiogenesis, cellular migration, proliferation and differentiation, considered essential for skin repair. Objectives This study aimed to describe the treatment of eight dogs with naturally occurring cutaneous wounds, where autologous PRF therapy was applied, using a protocol developed by our group. Methods Eight dogs, aged between 7‐month and 9‐year old, from different breeds and sexes, were enrolled in this study. Four of these wounds were clinically infected. In three cases, two PRF treatments were performed during the first week of treatment, followed by single weekly treatments from the second week onwards, until exophytic granulation tissues were present. In each case, the treatment was finalized only when complete wound closure was achieved. Wounds did not receive topical antiseptics, antibiotics or topical drugs to promote wound healing during the treatment. Results PRF‐grafting treatments were well tolerated in all treated wounds, inducing significant granulation tissue formation. PRF clots acted as a natural tissue filler, promoting epithelization and wound closure, without the requirement of topical antimicrobial/antiseptics application, or additional surgical debridement. Evident skin contraction was recorded in larger injuries and all the treatments resulted in vestigial aesthetic scars where hair growth was also observed. Conclusions PRF‐therapy obtained promising results, as an alternative wound treatment, revealing a biological regenerative action, prompting the natural skin healing process.

Abstract Urban vegetable gardens are very often a feature of cities that want to offer their citizens a more sustainable lifestyle by producing their own food products. However, cities can have significant pollution levels (or pollution hotspots) due to specific sources of pollution, such as traffic. Among the various pollutants, microplastics (MPs) are emerging as a consensual concern due to the awareness of the environmental contamination, their bioaccumulation potential and human intake, and, consequently unknown human health impacts. The present study compared the content of MPs in lettuce plants cultivated in Lisbon urban gardens with those cultivated in a rural area, as well as samples bought in supermarkets. Microplastics were detected in all washed leaves, with mean levels ranging from 6.3 ± 6.2 to 29.4 ± 18.2 MPs/g. Lettuce grown in urban gardens from areas with high traffic density showed higher MPs levels. Weak positive Spearman’s rank correlations were found between MPs content and concentrations of Cu and S (determined by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, PIXE), suggesting a possible role of traffic contribution to MPs levels, as both elements are considered traffic-source tracers. These results contribute to shed light on the MP contamination of vegetables grown in such urban environments, that may represent a potential MP exposure route through the dietary intake, corresponding to a 70% increase in annual MP intake compared to lettuces bought in supermarkets.

Abstract A multi‐responsive photo and electrochromic salt based on a viologen derivative ([(C10)2Bpy]2+) as organic cation combined with diarylethene anion ([DTE]2−) is synthesized and characterized for the first time. The coloration of this functional salt can be modulated by light and electricity according to further applications. Photochemical determination of the quantum yields in solution for the ring‐opening and closure of [(C10)2Bpy][DTE‐COO] ionic liquid have been determined. The electrochemical and electrochromism performance have been also studied in order to evaluate the reduction of bipyridinium cation as well as the oxidation of the DTE anion in its open and closed forms. The possibility of individually addressing the redox state of the anion and cation is seen as a very attractive approach to designing photo‐electrochromic devices.

Abstract The feasibility of using an external beam microprobe facility to explore the biological effects generated by proton irradiation in cultured cells is demonstrated. An in-air irradiation set-up was developed that allows energy tuning and enables estimating the flux and dose deposition in cells. A pilot study on the effect of boron-rich metallacarboranes as radiosensitizers towards human glioblastoma cells was carried out. This served as a proof of concept for the enhancement effect of proton irradiation induced by the presence of boron, which undergoes a nuclear 11B(p,α)αα reaction. Details of the experimental set-up and physical parameters measured are presented. Also, preliminary results of cell’s irradiation and uncertainties are discussed anticipating the advances that have been achieved by our group in this field.

An optical fiber pH sensor based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is reported. Two oppositely charged polymers, polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA), were alternately deposited on the sensing structure through a layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic self-assembly technique. Since the polymers are pH sensitive, their refractive index (RI) varies when the pH of the solution changes due to swelling/deswelling phenomena. The fabricated multilayer coating retained a similar property, enabling its use in pH-sensing applications. The pH of the PAA dipping solution was tuned so that a coated LPFG achieved a pH sensitivity of (6.3 ± 0.2) nm/pH in the 5.92–9.23 pH range. Only two bilayers of PEI/PAA were used as an overlay, which reduces the fabrication time and increases the reproducibility of the sensor, and its reversibility and repeatability were demonstrated by tracking the resonance band position throughout multiple cycles between different pH solutions. With simulation work and experimental results from a low-finesse Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity on a fiber tip, the coating properties were estimated. When saturated at low pH, it has a thickness of 200 nm and 1.53 ± 0.01 RI, expanding up to 310 nm with a 1.35 ± 0.01 RI at higher pH values, mostly due to the structural changes in the PAA.

Abstract We study the scattering of light-like geodesics and massless scalar waves by a static Konoplya–Zhidenko black hole, considering the case that the parametrized black hole solution contains a single deformation parameter. By performing a geodesic analysis, we compute the classical differential scattering cross section and probe the influence of the deformation parameter on null trajectories. Moreover, we investigate the propagation of a massless scalar field in the vicinity of the static Konoplya–Zhidenko black hole and use the plane waves formalism to compute the differential scattering cross section. We confront our numerical results in the backward direction with the glory approximation, finding excellent agreement. We compare the results for the deformed black hole with the Schwarzschild case, finding that the additional parameter has an important role in the behavior of the scattering process for moderate-to-high scattering angles.

Abstract We study the scattering of monochromatic planar scalar waves in a geometry that interpolates between the Schwarzschild solution, regular black holes and traversable wormhole spacetimes. We employ the partial waves approach to compute the differential scattering cross section of the regular black hole, as well as of the wormhole solutions. We compare our full numerical results with the classical geodesic scattering and the glory approximation, obtaining excellent agreement in the appropriate regime of validity of such approximations. We obtain that the differential scattering cross section for the regular black hole case is similar to the Schwarzschild result. Notwithstanding, the results for wormholes can be very distinctive from the black hole ones. In particular, we show that the differential scattering cross section for wormholes considerably decreases at large scattering angles for resonant frequencies.

Abstract Black holes can be inserted in very rich astrophysical environments, such as accretion disks. Although isolated black holes are simple objects in general relativity, their accretion disks may significantly enrich the field configurations of their surroundings. Alternative theories of gravity can lead to novel black hole solutions, which can be represented by small deviations in the metric due to an effective stress-energy tensor. Among the key aspects of the interaction of black holes with their surroundings, stand tidal forces phenomena. We study the tidal forces of spherically symmetric black holes in the presence of effective matter fields, dubbed as dirty black holes. These effective fields can generically represent usual or exotic matter associated to a variety of gravity theories. We show that this dirtiness leads to characteristic imprints in the tidal forces, which are absent in the case of a black hole surrounded by vacuum. We apply our results to particular cases, such as black holes coupled to linear and nonlinear electrodynamics theories and a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a spherical shell.

The extracted olive pomace (EOP) is an industrial lignocellulosic by-product of olive pomace oil extraction, currently mainly used for energy production through combustion. In this work, the hemicellulosic fraction of EOP was selectively hydrolyzed by diluted acid hydrolysis to obtain pentose-rich hydrolysates that can potentially be upgraded by Debaryomyces hansenii, targeting xylitol production. The monosaccharides and degradation by-products released along the pre-treatment were quantified and several detoxification methods for the removal of potentially toxic compounds were evaluated, including pH adjustment to 5.5, the use of anion-exchange resins, adsorption into activated charcoal, concentration by evaporation, and membrane techniques, i.e., nanofiltration. The latter approach was shown to be the best method allowing the full removal of furfural, 41% of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, 54% of acetic acid, and 67% of the phenolic compounds present in the hydrolysate. The effects of the supplementation of both non-detoxified and detoxified hydrolysates were also assessed. The non-detoxified hydrolysate, under aerobic conditions, supported the yeast growth and xylitol production at low levels. Supplementation with the low-cost corn steep liquor of the nanofiltration detoxified hydrolysate showed a higher xylitol yield (0.57 g/g) compared to the non-detoxified hydrolysate. The highest xylitol productivity was found in hydrolysate detoxified with anionic resins (0.30 g/L·h), which was 80% higher than in the non-detoxified culture medium. Overall, the results showed that EOP dilute acid hydrolysates can efficiently be used for xylitol production by D. hansenii if detoxification, and supplementation, even with low-cost supplements, are performed.

Marine sponges are highly efficient in removing organic pollutants and their cultivation, adjacent to fish farms, is increasingly considered as a strategy for improving seawater quality. Moreover, these invertebrates produce a plethora of bioactive metabolites, which could translate into an extra profit for the aquaculture sector. Here, we investigated the chemical profile and bioactivity of two Mediterranean species (i.e., Agelas oroides and Sarcotragus foetidus) and we assessed whether cultivated sponges differed substantially from their wild counterparts. Metabolomic analysis of crude sponge extracts revealed species-specific chemical patterns, with A. oroides and S. foetidus dominated by alkaloids and lipids, respectively. More importantly, farmed and wild explants of each species demonstrated similar chemical fingerprints, with the majority of the metabolites showing modest differences on a sponge mass-normalized basis. Furthermore, farmed sponge extracts presented similar or slightly lower antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, compared to the extracts resulting from wild sponges. Anticancer assays against human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116) revealed marginally active extracts from both wild and farmed S. foetidus populations. Our study highlights that, besides mitigating organic pollution in fish aquaculture, sponge farming can serve as a valuable resource of biomolecules, with promising potential in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Because of their ability for aerial dispersal using silk and preference for open habitats, many wolf spiders are formidable colonisers. Pioneering arachnologists were already aware of the large and colourful wolf spiders in the Madeira archipelago, currently included in the genus Hogna Simon, 1885. The origins were investigated and species boundaries of Madeiran Hogna examined by integrating target-gene and morphological information. A multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of a thorough sampling across wolf-spider diversity suggested a single origin of Madeiran endemics, albeit with low support. Divergence time estimation traced back their origin to the late Miocene, a time of major global cooling that drove the expansion of grasslands and the associated fauna. Morphological examination of types and newly collected material revealed a new species, hereby described as H. isambertoi Crespo, sp. nov. Additionally, H. blackwalli is revalidated and three new synonymies are proposed, namely H. biscoitoi Wunderlich, 1992, junior synonym of H. insularum Kulczynski, 1899, H. schmitzi Wunderlich, 1992, junior synonym of H. maderiana (Walckenaer, 1837), and Arctosa maderana Roewer, 1960 junior synonym of H. ferox (Lucas, 1838). Species delimitation analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear markers provided additional support for morphological delineations. The species pair H. insularum and H. maderiana, however, constituted an exception: the lack of exclusive haplotypes in the examined markers, along with the discovery of intermediate forms, pointed to hybridisation between these two species as reported in other congeneric species on islands. Finally, the conservation status of the species is discussed and candidates for immediate conservation efforts are identified.

IntroductionVasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXT) are neuropeptides produced by magnocellular neurons (MCNs) of the hypothalamus and secreted through neurohypophysis to defend mammals against dehydration. It was recently demonstrated that MCNs also project to limbic structures, modulating several behavioral responses.Methods and ResultsWe found that 24 h of water deprivation (WD) or salt loading (SL) did not change exploration or anxiety-like behaviors in the elevated plus maze (EPM) test. However, rats deprived of water for 48 h showed reduced exploration of open field and the closed arms of EPM, indicating hypoactivity during night time. We evaluated mRNA expression of glutamate decarboxylase 1 (Gad1), vesicular glutamate transporter 2 (Slc17a6), AVP (Avpr1a) and OXT (Oxtr) receptors in the lateral habenula (LHb), basolateral (BLA) and central (CeA) amygdala after 48 h of WD or SL. WD, but not SL, increased Oxtr mRNA expression in the CeA. Bilateral pharmacological inhibition of OXTR function in the CeA with the OXTR antagonist L-371,257 was performed to evaluate its possible role in regulating the EPM exploration or water intake induced by WD. The blockade of OXTR in the CeA did not reverse the hypoactivity response in the EPM, nor did it change water intake induced in 48-h water-deprived rats.DiscussionWe found that WD modulates exploratory activity in rats, but this response is not mediated by oxytocin receptor signaling to the CeA, despite the upregulated Oxtr mRNA expression in that structure after WD for 48 h.

Abstract We investigate the absorption of planar massless scalar waves by a charged rotating stringy black hole, namely a Kerr–Sen black hole. We compute numerically the absorption cross section and compare our results with those of the Kerr–Newman black hole, a classical general relativity solution. In order to better compare both charged black holes, we define the ratio of the black hole charge to the extreme charge as Q. We conclude that Kerr–Sen and Kerr–Newman black holes have a similar absorption cross section, with the difference increasing for higher values of Q.

Scenedesmus obliquus, a biotechnologically relevant microalgae, was grown in 70 L vertical photobioreactors using non-supplemented secondary brewery wastewater as a culture medium. Upon collection, by mechanical means, the cells were subjected to hydrothermal (autohydrolysis) and dilute acid hydrolysis (0.5 % sulfuric acid) pre-treatments carried out using pressure micro-reactors under isothermal conditions up to 300 min.Both processes enabled a high recovery of soluble sugars (∼50 %) that were, in a great majority, present in the added-value oligomeric form (92 % and 90.5 % for autohydrolysis and dilute acid hydrolysis, respectively). Protein solubilization also presented relevant yields (35 % removal), with dilute acid hydrolysis allowing both higher oligosaccharides and protein productivities at a milder temperature.As compared to the current whole microalgae biomass-based upgrade strategies, the use of these mild processes is extremely promising, as they will enable the future co-production of added-value oligosaccharides, and protein, which can be relevant co-products of a biofuels-based biorefinery.

Reinforced concrete structures are prevalent in infrastructure and are of significant economic and social importance to humanity. However, they are prone to decay from cement paste carbonation. pH sensors have been developed to monitor cement paste carbonation, but their adoption by the industry remains limited. This work introduces two new methods for monitoring cement paste carbonation in real time that have been validated through the accelerated carbonation of cement paste samples. Both configurations depart from traditional pH monitoring. In the first configuration, the carbonation depth of a cement paste sample is measured using two CO2 optical fiber sensors. One sensor is positioned on the surface of the sample, while the other is embedded in the middle. As the carbonation depth progresses and reaches the embedded CO2 sensor, the combined response of the sensors changes. In the second configuration, a multimode fiber is embedded within the paste, and its carbonation is monitored by observing the increase in reflected light intensity (1.6–18%) resulting from the formation of CaCO3. Its applicability in naturally occurring carbonation is tested at concentrations of 3.2% CO2, and the influence of water is positively evaluated; thus, this setup is suitable for real-world testing and applications.

The combination of active pharmaceutical ingredients in the form of ionic liquids or organic salts (API-OSILs) with mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as drug carriers can provide a useful tool in enhancing the capabilities of current antibiotics, especially against resistant strains of bacteria. In this publication, the preparation of a set of three nanomaterials based on the modification of a MSN surface with cholinium ([MSN-Chol][Cip]), 1-methylimidazolium ([MSN-1-MiM][Cip]) and 3-picolinium ([MSN-3-Pic][Cip]) ionic liquids coupled with anionic ciprofloxacin have been reported. All ionic liquids and functionalized nanomaterials were prepared through sustainable protocols, using microwave-assisted heating as an alternative to conventional methods. All materials were characterized through FTIR, solution 1H NMR, elemental analysis, XRD and N2 adsorption at 77 K. The prepared materials showed no in vitro cytotoxicity in fibroblasts viability assays. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for all materials was tested against Gram-negative K. pneumoniae and Gram-positive Enterococcus spp., both with resistant and sensitive strains. All sets of nanomaterials containing the anionic antibiotic outperformed free ciprofloxacin against resistant and sensitive forms of K. pneumoniae, with the prominent case of [MSN-Chol][Cip] suggesting a tenfold decrease in the MIC against sensitive strains. Against resistant K. pneumoniae, a five-fold decrease in the MIC was observed for all sets of nanomaterials compared with neutral ciprofloxacin. Against Enterococcus spp., only [MSN-1-MiM][Cip] was able to demonstrate a slight improvement over the free antibiotic.

Atmospheric water generation (AWG) is a technological innovation that facilitates the extraction of water from the atmosphere using various techniques. In response to mounting concerns regarding water scarcity in multiple regions globally, AWG has emerged as a promising solution for providing potable water in areas where conventional water sources are limited or contaminated. AWG systems can be implemented across diverse settings, ranging from individual households to large-scale industrial operations, and can be powered by renewable energy sources. Despite the inherent challenges associated with upscaling AWG technology to ensure its affordability and reliability, it possesses the potential to make a significant contribution towards meeting the water requirements of communities in both developed and developing nations. This study aimed to investigate the performance and limitations of a commercially available dehumidifier, namely, the Trotec TTK140S (Heinsberg, Germany), through experimental analysis. Additionally, the feasibility of integrating this dehumidifier with a photovoltaic energy source was explored. Initially, the dehumidifier’s water production and energy consumption were assessed under specific conditions. Subsequently, a comparison was conducted across three different locations (Lisbon, Pretoria, and Riyadh) to evaluate the dehumidifier’s operation and ascertain the photovoltaic module area necessary for it to function independently. This approach effectively addresses one of the main drawbacks of the technology, namely, its substantial energy consumption.

Objectives: The majority of available scores to assess mortality risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in the emergency department have high risk of bias. Therefore, this cohort aimed to develop and validate a score at hospital admission for predicting in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients and to compare this score with other existing ones. Methods: Consecutive patients (≥ 18 years) with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to the participating hospitals were included. Logistic regression analysis was performed to develop a prediction model for in-hospital mortality, based on the 3978 patients admitted between March–July, 2020. The model was validated in the 1054 patients admitted during August–September, as well as in an external cohort of 474 Spanish patients. Results: Median (25–75th percentile) age of the model-derivation cohort was 60 (48–72) years, and in-hospital mortality was 20.3%. The validation cohorts had similar age distribution and in-hospital mortality. Seven significant variables were included in the risk score: age, blood urea nitrogen, number of comorbidities, C-reactive protein, SpO2/FiO2 ratio, platelet count, and heart rate. The model had high discriminatory value (AUROC 0.844, 95% CI 0.829–0.859), which was confirmed in the Brazilian (0.859 [95% CI 0.833–0.885]) and Spanish (0.894 [95% CI 0.870–0.919]) validation cohorts, and displayed better discrimination ability than other existing scores. It is implemented in a freely available online risk calculator (https://abc2sph.com/). Conclusions: An easy-to-use rapid scoring system based on characteristics of COVID-19 patients commonly available at hospital presentation was designed and validated for early stratification of in-hospital mortality risk of patients with COVID-19.

Skin pigmentation is imparted by melanin and is crucial for photoprotection against UVR. Melanin is synthesized and packaged into melanosomes within melanocytes and is then transferred to keratinocytes (KCs). Although the molecular players involved in melanogenesis have been extensively studied, those underlying melanin transfer remain unclear. Previously, our group proposed that coupled exocytosis/phagocytosis is the predominant mechanism of melanin transfer in human skin and showed an essential role for RAB11B and the exocyst tethering complex in this process. In this study, we show that soluble factors present in KC-conditioned medium stimulate melanin exocytosis from melanocytes and transfer to KCs. Moreover, we found that these factors are released by differentiated KCs but not by basal layer KCs. Furthermore, we found that RAB3A regulates melanin exocytosis and transfer stimulated by KC-conditioned medium. Indeed, KC-conditioned medium enhances the recruitment of RAB3A to melanosomes in melanocyte dendrites. Therefore, our results suggest the existence of two distinct routes of melanin exocytosis: a basal route controlled by RAB11B and a RAB3A-dependent route, stimulated by KC-conditioned medium. Thus, this study provides evidence that soluble factors released by differentiated KCs control skin pigmentation by promoting the accumulation of RAB3A-positive melanosomes in melanocyte dendrites and their release and subsequent transfer to KCs.

Antiseptics and disinfectants are extensively used for a variety of topical and hard-surface applications. A wide variety of biocides as active chemical agents is found in these products, including alcohols, phenols, iodine, and chlorine. Many of these active agents demonstrate broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity; however, the mode of action of these agents is not well-documented. This review is focused on several examples of ionic systems based on ionic surfactants and ionic liquids as well as nanomaterials and nanoparticles acting as antiseptics and disinfectants for surfaces. It is important to note that many of these biocides may be used singly or in combination in a variety of products, which vary considerably in activity against microorganisms. Antimicrobial activity can be influenced by several factors such as formulation effects, presence of an organic load, synergy, temperature, dilution, and test method. The most promissory compounds based on ionic systems and nanomaterials published in mainly the last decade is chronologically reported in this review.

Different alkali deep eutectic solvents (DES), such as LiI:nEG, NaI:nEG, and KI:nEG, have been tested as electrolytes for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These DSSCs were prepared using pure DES or, alternatively, DES combined with different amounts of iodine (I2). The most important parameters, such as open circuit voltage (VOC), short circuit current density (JSC), fill factor (FF), and the overall conversion efficiency (η), were evaluated. Some DES seem to be promising candidates for DSSC applications, since they present higher VOC (up to 140 mV), similar FF values but less current density values, when compared with a reference electrolyte in the same experimental conditions. Additionally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been performed to elucidate the charge transfer and transport processes that occur in DSSCs. The values of different resistance (Ω·cm2) phenomena and recombination/relaxation time (s) for each process have been calculated. The best-performance was obtained for DES-based electrolyte, KI:EG (containing 0.5 mol% I2) showing an efficiency of 2.3%. The efficiency of this DES-based electrolyte is comparable to other literature systems, but the device stability is higher (only after seven months the performance of the device drop to 60%).

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are multipotent, which is defined by their ability to self-renew while maintaining the capacity to differentiate into a certain number of cells, presumably from their own germinal layer. MSCs therapy is based on their anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory (immunosuppressive) and regenerative potential. This review aims to provide a clinical overview of the MSCs potential as a therapeutic option for orthopaedic diseases in dogs. A total of 25 clinical studies published in the scientific literature in the last 15 years on various diseases will be presented: semitendinosus myopathy, supraspinatus tendinopathy, cruciate ligament rupture, bone fractures and defects, and also osteoarthritis. All articles involved in this study include only diseases that have naturally occurred in canine patients. MSCs therapy in the veterinary orthopaedic field has great potential, especially for osteoarthritis. All studies presented promising results. However, MSCs bone healing capacity did not reveal such favourable outcomes in the long term. Besides, most of these clinical studies did not include immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and histopathology to confirm that MSCs have differentiated and incorporated into the injured tissues. This review summarises the current knowledge of canine MSCs biology, immunology and clinical application in canine orthopaedic diseases. Despite the positive results in its use, there is still a lack of defined protocols, heterogeneous samples and concomitant medications used with MSCs therapy, compromising the therapeutic effects. Further studies are needed in the hope of overcoming its limitation in upcoming trials.

This work investigates the dielectric properties of barium titanate/gadolinium ferrite ceramic composites, with different concentrations of each material. Our objective was to increase the storage ability of this material, finding a compromise between high permittivity and low dielectric losses. A two-step sintering procedure was used in the preparation of the composites to attain the desired results. Their morphological, structural and electrical properties were tested using scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray powder diffraction and impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Dielectric characterizations were performed on the frequency band of 100 Hz–1 MHz and for different temperatures (180–380 K). The best compromise between barium titanate and gadolinium ferrite in the composition was calculated in order to obtain a potential material for electrical energy storage. The sample with 25% gadolinium ferrite presented the best results. The dielectric constant reached values of the order of 2000, at 1 kHz and 340 K. It was also important not to have very high losses, and this was confirmed by the calculated loss tangent.

This work proposes a valorization route for spent coffee grounds (SCG), a widespread lignocellulosic residue, encompassing the production of: biomethane, lignin, and oligosaccharides as value-added products obtained simultaneously during a mild alkaline (NaOH) pretreatment. The studied operational variables were the reaction time (60–240 min), temperature (25–75 °C), and the NaOH concentration (0–2.5 M). The severity factor suitably describes the global process kinetics, with higher severities (log Mo = 5.5) yielding high product yields, 18.02% and 13.25% (on dry SCG basis) for lignin and oligosaccharides (XGMOS), respectively. Solid yield is negatively impacted by all studied variables (at the 95% confidence level). Conversely, XGMOS yield is positively influenced both by time and catalyst concentration, whereas lignin yield is only (positively) influenced by catalyst concentration. Optimal balance between product formation and potential operational costs is putatively achieved when using 0.625 M NaOH, at 50 °C for 60 min. The mild alkaline pretreated biomass (MAP-SCG) was compared to untreated SCG for biomethane production by anaerobic co-digestion with pig slurry (PS), using a ratio of biomass/PS = 1/3 (volatile solids (VS) basis). The proposed valorization route enabled the sequential production of 6.25 kg lignin, 6.36 kg oligosaccharides, and 138.05 kg biomethane per 100 kg of non-extracted SCG (and 287.60 kg pig slurry), in an integrated process that is technically feasible and promotes the circular bioeconomy.
