Abstract

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been widely used in various graph-related problems such as node classification and graph classification, where superior performance is mainly established when natural node features are available. However, it is not well understood how GNNs work without natural node features, especially regarding the various ways to construct artificial ones. In this paper, we point out the two types of artificial node features, i.e., positional and structural node features, and provide insights on why each of them is more appropriate for certain tasks, i.e., positional node classification, structural node classification, and graph classification. Extensive experimental results on 10 benchmark datasets validate our insights, thus leading to a practical guideline on the choices between different artificial node features for GNNs on non-attributed graphs. Abstract

Despite tremendous progress in catalyst development for rate-limiting cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), reducing Pt usage while meeting performance requirements in practical proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) remains a challenge. The ORR in PEMFCs occurs at a catalyst–electrolyte–gas three-phase interface. A desirable interface should exhibit highly active and available catalytic sites, as well as allow efficient oxygen and proton feeding to the catalytic sites and timely removal of water to avoid interface flooding. Here, we report the design of a three-phase microenvironment in PEFMCs, showing that carbon surface chemistry can be tuned to modulate its interaction with the ionomers and create favorable transport paths for rapid delivery of both reactants and products. With such an elaborate interfacial design, for the first time we have demonstrated PEMFCs with all key ORR catalyst performance metrics, including mass activity, rated power, and durability, surpassing the US Department of Energy targets.

13. Analysis of Bag-of-n-grams Representation's Properties Based on Textual Reconstruction

Abstract

Despite its simplicity, bag-of-n-grams sen- tence representation has been found to excel in some NLP tasks. However, it has not re- ceived much attention in recent years and fur- ther analysis on its properties is necessary. We propose a framework to investigate the amount and type of information captured in a general- purposed bag-of-n-grams sentence represen- tation. We first use sentence reconstruction as a tool to obtain bag-of-n-grams representa- tion that contains general information of the sentence. We then run prediction tasks (sen- tence length, word content, phrase content and word order) using the obtained representation to look into the specific type of information captured in the representation. Our analysis demonstrates that bag-of-n-grams representa- tion does contain sentence structure level in- formation. However, incorporating n-grams with higher order n empirically helps little with encoding more information in general, except for phrase content information.

19. Probing Surface Dynamics of SiOxThin-Film Electrodes during Cycling through X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy and Operando X-Ray Reflectivity

Abstract

SiOxelectrodes are promising for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their ability to mitigate volume expansion-induced degradation. Here, we investigate the surface dynamics of SiOxthin-film electrodes cycled in different carbonate-based electrolytes using a combination of ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and operando synchrotron X-ray reflectivity analyses. The thin-film geometry allows us to probe the depth-dependent chemical composition and electron density from surface to current collector through the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), the active material, and the thickness evolution during cycling. Results reveal that SiOxlithiation initiates below 0.4 V vs Li+/Li and indicate a close relationship between SEI formation and SiOxelectrode lithiation, likely due to the high resistivity of SiOx. We find similar chemical compositions for the SEI in FEC-containing and FEC-free electrolytes but observe a reduced thickness in the former case. In both cases, the SEI thickness decreases during delithiation due to the removal or dissolution of some carbonate species. These findings give insights into the (de)lithiation of SiOx, in particular, during the formation stage, and the effect of the presence of FEC in the electrolyte on the evolution of the SEI during cycling.

21. Cobalt-based hybrid nanoparticles loaded with curcumin for ligand-enhanced synergistic nanocatalytic therapy/chemotherapy combined with calcium overload.

Abstract

The therapeutic efficacy of Fenton or Fenton-like nanocatalysts is usually restricted by the inappropriate pH value and limited concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at the tumor site. Herein, calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-mineralized cobalt silicate hydroxide hollow nanocatalysts (CSO@CaCO3, CC) were synthesized and loaded with curcumin (CCC). This hybrid system can simultaneously realize nanocatalytic therapy, chemotherapy and calcium overload. With the stabilization of liposomes, CCC is able to reach the tumor site smoothly. The CaCO3 shell first degrades in an acidic tumor environment, releasing Cur and Ca2+, and the pH value of the tumor is increased simultaneously. Then the exposed CSO catalyzes the Fenton-like reaction to convert H2O2 into ˙OH and enhances the cytotoxicity of curcumin (Cur) by catalytically oxidizing it to a ˙Cur radical. Curcumin not only induces the chemotherapy effect but also serves as a nucleophilic ligand and an electron donor in the catalytic system, enhancing the Fenton-like activity of CCC by electron transfer. In addition, calcium overload also amplifies the efficacy of ROS-based therapy. In vitro and in vivo results show that CCC exhibited an excellent synergistic tumor inhibition effect without any clear side effect. This work proposes a novel concept of nanocatalytic therapy/chemotherapy synergistic mechanism by the ligand-induced enhancement of Fenton-like catalytic activity, and inspires the construction of combined therapeutic nanoplatforms and multifunctional nanocarriers for drug and ion delivery in the future. Abstract

Herein, copper ion doped calcium alginate (Cu2+/CaAlg) composite hydrogel filtration membranes were prepared by using natural polymer sodium alginate (NaAlg) as raw material. The thermal stability and structure of the composite membranes were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical strength, anti-fouling performance, hydrophilicity and filtration performance of the membrane were studied. The results show that Cu2+/CaAlg hydrogel membrane has excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability. The anti-swelling ability of the membrane was greatly enhanced by doping Cu2+. After three alternate filtration cycles, the flux recovery rate of Cu2+/CaAlg hydrogel membrane can still reach 85%, indicating that the membrane has good anti-pollution performance. When the operation pressure was 0.1 MPa, the rejection of coomassie brilliant blue G250 reached 99.8% with a flux of 46.3 L m−2 h−1, while the Na2SO4 rejection was less than 10.0%. The Cu2+/CaAlg membrane was recycled after 24 h in the filtration process, and its flux and rejection rate did not decrease significantly, indicating that the hydrogel membrane has long-term application potential. The Cu2+/CaAlg membrane has a wide range of applications prospect in dye desalination, fine separation and biopharmaceutical technology fields.
