7. Wearable Multichannel Electromyography Sensors for Homecare Sarcopenia Diagnosis

Abstract

Sarcopenia leading to a loss of activity ability affects individuals of various ages, particularly the elderly with limited mobility. Therefore, portable muscle function evaluation is crucial for predicting sarcopenia. However, traditional clinical diagnosis methods are not accessible for home use due to their high costs and inconvenience. Here, to develop a portable and user-friendly muscle function evaluation system to facilely predict sarcopenia, we designed a real-time surface electromyography (sEMG) acquisition system composed of an eight-channel hydrogel-based flexible electrode array and a printed circuit board. Benefiting by the differential circuit layout and the soft nature of the hydrogel electrode, the sEMG sensor array can be conformably attached onto the human wrist with low common mode noise, enabling the noninvasive, continuous sEMG signal collection with a high signal-to-noise ratio of 29.91 dB. As a demonstration, the device was applied to collect sEMG data on a group of elderly individuals. Two sEMG features were extracted, both of which were found to significantly affect sarcopenia. Overall, this lightweight, user-friendly sEMG acquisition system shows promise for homecare use in predicting sarcopenia, offering a cost-effective and convenient alternative to traditional clinical methods.

13. Relaxation Signal Analysis and Optimization of Analog Resistive Random Access Memory for Neuromorphic Computing

Abstract

The relaxation effect in analog resistive random access memory (RRAM) poses a significant challenge in the implementation of neuromorphic systems, as it leads to a loss of accuracy in computing. However, due to the inherent interdependence of various fluctuations and underlying mechanisms, the relaxation effect is still challenging. In this study, we have developed a high-quality adaptive relaxation signal analysis method by analyzing the read current during the relaxation process. This method enables the identification of all conductivity demarcation points in relaxation and categorizes them into different types of fluctuations. Importantly, we have investigated distinct fluctuations in relaxation and their corresponding mechanisms, which is a comprehensive analysis of fluctuations in the relaxation effect. We propose an optimization strategy based on our understanding of these mechanisms: increasing the pulsewidth. This strategy aims to mitigate relaxation effects and reduce the relative accuracy loss of convolutional neural networks (CNNs).

29. Nitrogen-Oxyanion-Doped HfO2 Resistive Random-Access Memory With Chemically Enhanced Forming

Abstract

The high forming voltage of resistive random-access memory (RRAM) is one of the key bottlenecks for its integration in advanced silicon technology nodes. Here a nitrogen-oxyanion-doped (N-doped) hafnium oxide (HfO2) RRAM with overall improvement on forming voltage, on/off ratio and endurance is demonstrated. The critical electric field of N-doped RRAM for forming is 40% less than that of undoped RRAM. Therefore, a thicker resistive switching layer (RSL) can be used to obtain the same forming voltage, which benefits the on/off ratio and endurance performance. The N-doped RRAM achieves $3\times $ improvement in on/off ratio and $10\times $ improvement in endurance at the forming voltage of 2 V, a value applicable for integration with advanced silicon technology node. We propose the hypothesis that the nitrites ((NO2)−) in the RSL of N-doped devices promote forming through introducing extra chemical process as well as additional conductive paths. Physical characterization and first-principles calculations are further carried out to validate our hypothesis.

Abstract

Skin‐like wearable sensors are regarded as key technologies toward home‐based healthcare, human–machine interfaces, robotics, prostheses, and enhanced augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR). Inspired by human somatosensory functions, artificial sensory feedback systems play vital roles in shaping interactions with complex environments and timely decision‐making. This study presents an overview of recent advances in feedback‐driven, closed‐loop skin‐inspired flexible sensor systems that make use of emerging functional nanomaterials and elaborate structures. Drawing on feedback solutions, four categories of sensor systems are highlighted, which include prosthesis‐ and AR/VR‐based human–machine interfaces, smartphone‐based approaches for point‐of‐care detection, and smart wearable displays for direct signal visualizations. Furthermore, the progress of machine learning on the reliable recognition of massive quantities of signals generated by flexible sensor networks is briefly discussed. The state‐of‐the‐art hybrid sensor techniques, along with other emerging strategies, will enable total sensory feedback loop systems to be developed for next‐generation electronic skins. Abstract

Owing to the demand for the development of Internet of things devices, multiple sensor platforms are of great interest to society and its future electronics. One of these emerging devices is a mechanically flexible sensor system that can attach and conform to nonplanar surfaces, unlike conventional inflexible sensor chips. To realize this concept, a variety of flexible sensor systems must be developed from materials to system integrations. This study proposes a flexible sensor system as one of the candidates: an active‐matrix‐based flexible optical image sensor that uses a stacked nanosheet film formed by a solution process and transistors. The results show that the sensor can be utilized as an optical imager because it detects enough optical stimuli. In addition to the sensitivity, the mechanical flexibility of the active‐matrix optical sensor is tested, and the results exhibit good electrical stability even after 1000 bending cycles and 0.85 cm bending radius. The mapping of light distribution is successfully demonstrated under both flat and curved conditions. This flexible optical sensor array shows the high possibility to image the light distribution for high‐resolution and low power mapping realized by active matrix circuit integration. 38. Organohydrogel‐Based Soft SEMG Electrodes for Algorithm‐Assisted Gesture Recognition

Abstract

Epidermal electronics that can monitor physiological signals such as surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals attract widespread attentions in personalized healthcare, human–machine interfaces (HMI) and virtual/augmented reality (AR/VR). However, conventional electromyographic electrodes suffer from skin discomfort, susceptibility to motion artifact interference, and short service lifetime. Here, an organohydrogel‐based sEMG electrode endows with high conductivity, low modulus and long‐term stability is developed by doping partially reduced graphene oxide (pRGO) into highly cross‐linked organohydrogel network. The as‐fabricated polyacrylamide/sodium alginate/tannic acid/partially reduced graphene oxide (PAM/SA/TA/pRGO) organohydrogel possesses farewell conductivity (4.22 S m−1) while preserving tissue‐like compliance (Young's modulus ≈32 KPa), excellent stretchability (≈600%), high adhesion as well as superior anti‐drying properties. In addition, a stretchable sEMG electrode for long‐term reliable service is fabricated via immobilizing the organohydrogel electrodes onto a flexible very high bond (VHB) substrate. As a result, the integrated electrodes show high signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) (35.15 db) comparable to that of the commercial electrodes. Furthermore, with assistance of deep learning, the proposed sEMG electrodes obtain high identification accuracy of 97.11% in distinguishing sophisticated gestures. This system can be further exploited for real‐time tele‐operations and offers broad prospects in human–machine immersive interactive application. This work studies high conductive and adhesive organohydrogel as surface electromyogram electrodes for the application of gesture recognition. The organohydrogel‐based sEMG electrodes perform good in the system, which offers broad prospects in human–machine immersive interactive application.

46. Flapping‐Wing Dynamics as a Natural Detector of Wind Direction.

Abstract

Flapping‐wing unmanned aerial vehicles have potential advantages, such as consuming lower energy by leveraging the force of wind. Since the flapping movements of the soft wings contain information about the wind, measuring the movement of each part of the wings allows these vehicles to distinguish the direction of the wind. To confirm this prediction, herein, the detection of wind flow from the flapping‐wing motion of a bird robot using an integrated flexible strain sensor on its wing and a physical reservoir computing analysis is presented. In the presence of different wind directions, the movement of the flapping‐wings is measured using flexible strain sensors, and the current wind direction is detected by capitalizing on the intrinsic wing dynamics. As a result, it is found that the detection accuracy using our embedded flexible strain sensors is significantly high, showing a similar level of accuracy with a high‐speed camera recorded from the fixed position in the environment. The results indicate that flapping‐wing unmanned aerial vehicles can recognize wind direction by exploiting the natural dynamics of their wings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
