Abstract

The High Magnetic Passive Loop (HMCPL) technique is proposed as an innovative passive shielding system to mitigate the undesired dispersion of the magnetic field produced by a wireless power transfer (WPT) system, thus reducing the risk of hazardous human exposure. The magnetic structure is described both in terms of lumped parameters circuit, useful for sizing, and in terms of a geometrical representation solved by finite element method, useful to assess the field attenuation effects. Sizing of the resonance capacitors in the shielded WPT structure is approached as a Pareto optimization problem and solved via genetic algorithm. HMCPL shielding design guidance is provided to reduce the magnetic field emission in the surrounding environment. 18. Evaluation of Additive Manufacturing for Wireless Power Transfer Applications

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as an economical and feasible technology for creating industrial components. This article evaluates the use of AM for inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. In particular, the innovative use of metal 3-D printing is proposed as a manufacturing process for the coils. For this reason, the recent improvement of metal AM is proposed as a suitable solution to increase design opportunities, reduce costs and production time while improving transmission efficiency. In fact, the WPT coil current distribution can be preliminarily studied through finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize its cross section and geometry. In this work, a general design procedure for WPT coils using metal AM is presented and this technology is compared with traditional solutions (i.e., hollow and litz wire) through extensive experimental measurements. The analysis shows that AM allows to reduce the parasitic resistance, costs, and weight while increasing the transmission efficiency. Thus, the obtained results confirm the potential of AM for producing WPT coils, nominating this technology as a flexible, sustainable, and rapid solution for custom WPT coils production.

25. Frequency Characterization of Medium Voltage Cables for Fault Prevention Through Multi-Valued Neural Networks and Power Line Communication Technologies

Abstract

This paper proposes a new prognostic method capable of preventing catastrophic failures in Medium Voltage (MV) power cables. The main objective is the development of a monitoring system focused on the detection and localization of cable overtemperatures in underground distribution networks. The predictive analysis proposed here is based on a Multi-Layer neural network with Multi-Valued Neurons (MLMVN), which elaborates measurements of high frequency signals transmitted through Power Line Communication (PLC) devices. Therefore, the prognostic method does not require the introduction of additional components since the power line is already equipped with a communication system. This allows low intrusion and the possibility of monitoring power lines during their operation. Furthermore, the MLMVN-based classifier processes magnitude and phase of the received signals without preliminary coding steps and ensures a low computational cost. The main theoretical concept on which the predictive analysis is based is the detection of malfunctions starting from their effects on the cable parameters. For this reason, an RG7H1M1 cable has been experimentally characterized in the frequency range between 90 kHz and 1 MHz, both in nominal conditions and in overheating situations generated by means of a climatic chamber. The changes in the electrical parameters of the cable modify the transmitted signal and the monitoring system proposed here allows the identification and localization of the overheated section with high accuracy.

Abstract

This paper presents an accurate averaged model of a Buck converter controlled via pulse‐skipping modulation (PSM). The derived model includes the parasitic elements of the circuit components, and it is not yet given in the literature. Output capacitor voltage and inductor current are analysed under steady‐state operation by deriving the expressions of average and ripple amplitude values. The accuracy improvements introduced by the proposed model are validated by comparison against models existing in the literature. A design procedure based on the proposed model is formulated and experimentally validated. The expressions for the control‐to‐output and the input‐to‐output network functions, both including the parasitic components of the converter circuit, are derived and utilized to exploit the circuit dynamic behaviour in the frequency domain. Abstract

This paper presents a Wi-Fi-based stand-alone system for online monitoring of the operating conditions of a photovoltaic (PV) plant. The setup is constituted by a microcontroller unit (MCU), a power meter to periodically sample the values of voltage and current, a temperature sensor, Li- Ion rechargeable batteries, a DC-DC converter able to supply the circuitry, a pc running MATLAB. The core of the presented system is the use of an analytical method to calculate solar irradiance that allows not to resort to solar sensors. The system is thought to be embedded on the back of each PV panel constituting the PV plant and to provide quick information on the operating point and, hence, also on the power production of the device. A MATLAB instrument control interface is used to collect data about the whole plant and to manage the acquisition. The PV panel is simulated through a TerraSAS PV simulator able to emulate the electrical behavior of any solar array.

Abstract

A neural network model to predict the dynamic hysteresis loops and the energy-loss curves (i.e., the energy versus the amplitude of the magnetic induction) of soft ferromagnetic materials at different operating frequencies is proposed herein. Firstly, an innovative Fe-Si magnetic alloy, grade 35H270, is experimentally characterized via an Epstein frame in a wide range of frequencies, from 1 Hz up to 600 Hz. Parts of the dynamic hysteresis loops obtained through the experiments are involved in the training of a feedforward neural network, while the remaining ones are considered to validate the model. The training procedure is accurately designed to, firstly, identify the optimum network architecture (i.e., the number of hidden layers and the number of neurons per layer), and then, to effectively train the network. The model turns out to be capable of reproducing the magnetization processes and predicting the dynamic energy losses of the examined material in the whole range of inductions and frequencies considered.
