Abstract

A two-stage method consisting of bioactive 3D porous calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings deposition on the titanium surface by hybrid ultrasound-assisted micro-arc oxidation (UMAOH) followed by a modification of the coatings with a polylactic acid/glycolic acid copolymer (PLGA) using dip-coating technology is proposed. Results showed that the use of dip-coating technology with multiple cycles of dipping (10 – 20 times) or long-term (10 – 30 min) immersion in 1 %, 5 % or 10 % PLGA solution allows efficient introduction of a polymer into porous structure of CaP coatings that is homogeneously spread throughout their thickness. The change in the phase composition of the polymer-modified UMAOH CaP coatings was not observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The treatment of wastewater from arsenic compounds is an important and urgent problem. Composite nanostructures consisting of boehmite and iron compounds have a high adsorption capacity towards As(V) specie. In this work, the adsorption properties of nanostructured composites prepared by the oxidation of bimetallic Al/Fe nanoparticles with different iron contents were investigated. As a result of oxidation, boehmite AlOOH nanosheets are formed, with the resultant FeAl2 nanoparticles being distributed on the surface of boehmite nanosheets. The nanostructured composites prepared from Al/Fe nanoparticles containing 20 wt% Fe have been found to show the highest adsorption capacity towards As(V) specie, being 248 mg/g. The adsorption isotherms are most accurately described by the Freundlich model, with the arsenic adsorption process obeying pseudo second order kinetics. As a result of the study, the optimal ratio of Al and Fe in Al/Fe nanoparticles has been determined to obtain an AlOOH/FeAl2 composite adsorbent with a developed and accessible surface and a high sorption capacity towards As(V). Abstract

The creation of new nanomaterials with improved characteristics, as well as the development of new approaches to obtain such materials is an urgent task in science and technology. One of the promising directions in obtaining improved nanomaterials is the use of precursors in the form of multicomponent metal nanoparticles. Thermal oxidation of bimetallic Ti/Al nanoparticles obtained by electrical explosion of wires was investigated in this work. Ti/Al nanoparticles have been found to be completely oxidized with the formation of composite TiO2/Al2O3 nanoparticles after calcination at 900 °C. The formation of TiO2 phase with a rutile structure on heating to 500 °C, and the formation of TiO2 phases with a rutile and anatase structure, as well as α-Al2O3 on heating to 700 °C have been established, in addition to the residue of unoxidized metals. Complete oxidation of Ti/Al nanoparticles occurs when heated to 900 °C. The photochemical activity of TiO2/Al2O3 composite nanoparticles obtained at 900 °C was studied. 44. Modification of Porous α-Al2O3 Ceramic by Boehmite Nanosheet Structures.

Abstract

Modification of porous ceramic materials makes it possible to improve their functional characteristics. In this study, we demonstrate the possibility of modifying macroporous Al2O3 ceramic with boehmite nanosheet structures using electroexplosive Al/AlN nanoparticles. To accomplish this, the porous ceramic is impregnated with a suspension of nanoparticles in ethanol, after which the reaction of hydrolysis and oxidation of the nanoparticles fixed in the bulk of the porous ceramic is carried out at 60°C. As a result of the reaction, nanosheet structures of fine grained boehmite are formed on the ceramic surface. This makes it possible to substantially increase the specific surface area of the sample to 25.9 m2/g and to considerably improve the sorption characteristics of macroporous Al2O3 ceramic with respect to eosin dye. During the protective action, it is possible to adsorb up to 2.9 mg/g of the dye at a linear flow rate of 0.15 cm/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two-photon microscopy methods have been actively developing in the last two decades. In particular, various approaches are being developed to analyze metabolic activity obtained by laser microscopy with high temporal resolution. One such approach is ploting the autofluorescence lifetime signal data to the phasor plot and observe deviations from the normal state. This tool has proven itself well for analyzing the metabolic activity of biological objects, including bacteria. This study analyzes the antimicrobial activity for MRSA bacteria by phasor plot approach. It was possible to show that, the lifetime of autofluorescence in the phasor plane changes depending on the type of nanoparticles used, with which bacteria are incubated. This result can be used in the future for rapid assessment of the antimicrobial activity of nanoparticles.
