The latest breakthroughs in time-varying photonics are fueling novel thermal emission phenomena, for example, showing that the dynamic amplification of quantum vacuum fluctuations, induced by the time-modulation of material properties, enables a mechanism to surpass the black-body spectrum. So far, this issue has only been investigated under the assumption of non-dispersive time-modulations. In this work, we identify the existence of a non-physical diverging behavior in the time-modulated emission spectra at high frequencies, and prove that it is actually attributed to the simplistic assumption of a non-dispersive (temporally local) response of the time-modulation associated with memory-less systems. Accordingly, we upgrade the theoretical formalism by introducing a dispersive response function, showing that it leads to a high-frequency cut-off, thereby eliminating the divergence and hence allowing for the proper computation of the emission spectra of time-modulated materials., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Spacetime metamaterials (ST-MMs) are opening new regimes of light-matter interactions based on the breaking of temporal and spatial symmetries, as well as intriguing concepts associated with synthetic motion. In this work, we investigate the continuous spatiotemporal translation symmetry of ST-MMs with uniform modulation velocity. Using Noether theorem, we demonstrate that such symmetry entails the conservation of the energy-momentum. We highlight how energy-momentum conservation imposes constraints on the range of allowed light-matter interactions within ST-MMs, as illustrated with examples of the collision of electromagnetic and modulation pulses. Furthermore, we discuss the similarities and differences between the conservation of energy-momentum and relativistic effects. We believe that our work provides a step forward in clarifying the fundamental theory underlying ST-MMs.

The virtualization of Radio Access Networks (vRAN) is well on its way to become a reality, driven by its advantages such as flexibility and cost-effectiveness. However, virtualization comes at a high price - virtual Base Stations (vBSs) sharing the same computing platform incur a significant computing overhead due to in extremis consumption of shared cache memory resources. Consequently, vRAN suffers from increased energy consumption, which fuels the already high operational costs in 5G networks. This paper investigates cache memory allocation mechanisms' effectiveness in reducing total energy consumption. Using an experimental vRAN platform, we profile the energy consumption and CPU utilization of vBS as a function of the network state (e.g., traffic demand, modulation scheme). Then, we address the high dimensionality of the problem by decomposing it per vBS, which is possible thanks to the Last-Level Cache (LLC) isolation implemented in our system. Based on this, we train a vBS digital twin, which allows us to train offline a classifier, avoiding the performance degradation of the system during training. Our results show that our approach performs very closely to an offline optimal oracle, outperforming standard approaches used in today's deployments.

Polarization-dependent dynamical properties of light as the spin angular momentum (SAM), helicity, and chirality are conserved quantities in free-space. Despite their similarities on account of their relationship with a circular state of polarization, SAM, helicity, and chirality emerge from distinct symmetries, which endows them with different physical meanings, properties, and practical applications. In this work, we investigate the behavior of such quantities in time-varying media (TVM), i.e., how a temporal modulation impacts their symmetries and conservation laws. Our results demonstrate that the SAM is conserved for any time modulation, helicity is only preserved in impedance-matched time modulations, while chirality is not conserved. In addition, the continuity equations highlight the dependence of the chirality with the energy content of the fields. These results provide additional insights into the similarities and differences between SAM, helicity, and chirality, as well as their physical meaning. Furthermore, our theoretical framework provides with a new perspective to analyze polarization-dependent light-matter interactions in TVM.

Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. In this work we address quantum vacuum amplification effects in time-varying media with an arbitrary time-modulation profile. To this end, we propose a theoretical formalism based on the concept of conjugated harmonic oscillators, evaluating the impact on the transition time in temporal boundaries, shedding light into the practical requirements to observe quantum effects at them. In addition, we find nontrivial effects in pulsed-modulations, where the swiftest and strongest modulation does not lead to the highest photon production. Thus, our results provide key insights for the design of temporal modulation sequences to enhance quantum phenomena.

Radio Access Networks virtualization (vRAN) is on its way becoming a reality driven by the new requirements in mobile networks, such as scalability and cost reduction. Unfortunately, there is no free lunch but a high price to be paid in terms of computing overhead introduced by noisy neighbors problem when multiple virtualized base station instances share computing platforms. In this paper, first, we thoroughly dissect the multiple sources of computing overhead in a vRAN, quantifying their different contributions to the overall performance degradation. Second, we design an AI-driven Radio Intelligent Controller (AIRIC) to orchestrate vRAN computing resources. AIRIC relies upon a hybrid neural network architecture combining a relation network (RN) and a deep Q-Network (DQN) such that: (i) the demand of concurrent virtual base stations is satisfied considering the overhead posed by the noisy neighbors problem while the operating costs of the vRAN infrastructure is minimized; and (ii) dynamically changing contexts in terms of network demand, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the number of base station instances are efficiently supported. Our results show that AIRIC performs very closely to an offline optimal oracle, attaining up to 30% resource savings, and substantially outperforms existing benchmarks in service guarantees.

Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. Time-varying media break temporal symmetries while preserving spatial symmetries intact. Thus, it represents an excellent conceptual framework to investigate the fundamental implications of Noether's theorem for the electromagnetic field. At the same time, addressing momentum conservation in time-varying media sheds light on the Abraham-Minkowski debate, where two opposing forms of the electromagnetic field momentum are defended. Here, we present a tutorial review on the conservation of momentum in time-varying media. We demonstrate that the Minkowski momentum is a conserved quantity with three independent approaches of increasing complexity: (i) via the application of the boundary conditions for Maxwell equations at a temporal boundary, (ii) testing for constants of motion and deriving conservation laws, and (iii) applying temporal and spatial translations within the framework of the Lagrangian theory of the electromagnetic field. Each approach provides a different and complementary insight into the problem.

Regarded as a promising alternative to spatially shaping matter, time-varying media can be seized to control and manipulate wave phenomena, including thermal radiation. Here, based upon the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we elaborate a comprehensive quantum theoretical formulation that lies the basis for investigating thermal emission effects in time-modulated media. Our theory unveils new physics brought about by time-varying media: nontrivial correlations between thermal fluctuating currents at different frequencies and positions, thermal radiation overcoming the black-body spectrum, and quantum vacuum amplification effects at finite temperature. We illustrate how these features lead to striking phenomena and novel thermal emitters, specifically, showing that the time-modulation releases strong field fluctuations confined within epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) bodies, and that, in turn, it enables a narrowband (partially coherent) emission spanning the whole range of wavevectors, from near to far-field regimes., Comment: Main text (11 pages, 5 figures) + Supplementary Information (32 pages)

Temporal metamaterials empower novel forms of wave manipulation with direct applications to quantum state transformations. In this work, we investigate vacuum amplification effects in anisotropic temporal boundaries. Our results theoretically demonstrate that the anisotropy of the temporal boundary provides control over the angular distribution of the generated photons. We analyze several single and multi-layered configurations of anisotropic temporal boundaries, each with a distinct vacuum amplification effect. Examples include the inhibition of photon production along specific directions, resonant and directive vacuum amplification, the generation of angular and frequency photon combs, and fast angular variations between inhibition and resonant photon production.

We investigate the quantum optical response of antireflection temporal coatings, i.e., matching temporal layers that suppress the generation of backward waves in temporal boundaries. Our results reveal that quantum antireflection temporal coatings are characterized for inducing a frequency shift of the quantum state, while preserving all photon statistics intact. Thus, they might find application for fast quantum frequency shifting in photonic quantum networks. The quantum theory also provides additional insight on their classical mode of operation, clarifying which quantities are preserved through the temporal boundary. Finally, we show that quantum antireflection temporal coatings allow for fast temporal switching without the amplification of thermal fields.

Metallic nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) cavities enable extreme field confinement in sub-nm gaps, leading to unrivaled performance for nonlinear processes such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). So far, prevailing experimental approaches based on NPoMs have been performed by means of free-space light excitation and collection under oblique incidence, since the fundamental radiatively-coupled NPoM mode does not scatter in the normal direction. Retaining this working principle, here we numerically show that plasmonic cavity modes in NPoM configurations can be efficiently excited in an integrated SERS approach through TM guided modes of silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides. Intensity enhancements beyond 10$^{5}$ can be achieved for gap spacings around 1 nm. So as to reduce unwanted SiN Raman background, the output Stokes signals are transferred to transversely placed waveguides, reaching coupling efficiencies of up to 10%. Geometrical parameters such as the gap thickness as well as the radius and position of the nanoparticle provide full control over the main spectral features, thereby enabling us to engineer and drive the optical response of NPoMs for high-performance SERS in Si-based photonic integrated platforms., Comment: 20 pages (13 of main text + 7 of references). 6 figures + Graphical TOC Entry

The goal of active aging is to promote changes in the elderly community so as to maintain an active, independent and socially-engaged lifestyle. Technological advancements currently provide the necessary tools to foster and monitor such processes. This paper reports on mid-term achievements of the European H2020 EMPATHIC project, which aims to research, innovate, explore and validate new interaction paradigms and platforms for future generations of personalized virtual coaches to assist the elderly and their carers to reach the active aging goal, in the vicinity of their home. The project focuses on evidence-based, user-validated research and integration of intelligent technology, and context sensing methods through automatic voice, eye and facial analysis, integrated with visual and spoken dialogue system capabilities. In this paper, we describe the current status of the system, with a special emphasis on its components and their integration, the creation of a Wizard of Oz platform, and findings gained from user interaction studies conducted throughout the first 18 months of the project., Comment: 12 pages

The NA60 experiment has studied low-mass muon pair production in proton-nucleus collisions with a system of Be, Cu, In, W, Pb and U targets, using a 400 GeV proton beam at the CERN SPS. The transverse momentum spectra of the $\rho/\omega$ and $\phi$ mesons are measured in the full $p_\mathrm{T}$ range accessible, from $p_\mathrm{T} = 0$ up to 2 GeV/$c$. The nuclear dependence of the production cross sections of the $\eta$, $\omega$ and $\phi$ mesons has been found to be consistent with the power law $\sigma_\mathrm{pA} \propto \mathrm{A}^\alpha$, with the $\alpha$ parameter increasing as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$ for all the particles, and an approximate hierarchy $\alpha_\eta \approx \alpha_\phi > \alpha_\omega$. The cross section ratios $\sigma_\eta/\sigma_\omega$, $\sigma_\rho/\sigma_\omega$ and $\sigma_\phi/\sigma_\omega$ have been studied as a function of the size A of the production target, and an increase of the $\eta$ and $\phi$ yields relative to the $\omega$ is observed from p-Be to p-U collisions.

We calculate the spin-averaged amplitude for doubly virtual forward Compton scattering off nucleons in the framework of manifestly Lorentz invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at complete one-loop order $O(p^4)$. The calculations are carried out both in the infinite and in a finite volume. Chiral spectroscopy is a powerful technique that enables to identify the chirality of matter through optical means. So far, experiments to check the chirality of matter or nanostructures have been carried out using free-space propagating light beams. However, for the sake of miniaturization, it would be desirable to perform chiral spectroscopy in photonic integrated platforms, with the additional benefit of massive parallel detection, low-cost production, repeatability, and portability of such a chiroptical device. Here we show that all-dielectric integrated photonic waveguides can support chiral modes under proper combination of the fundamental eigenmodes. In particular, we investigate two mainstream configurations: a dielectric wire with square cross-section and a slotted waveguide. We analyze numerically three different scenarios in which such waveguides could be used for chiral detection: all-dielectric waveguides as near-field probes, evanescent-induced chiral fields, and chiroptical interaction in void slots. In all the cases we consider a metallic nanohelix as a chiral probe, though all the approaches can be extended to other kinds of chiral nanostructures as well as matter. Within the context of spin-related optical phenomena, the near-field directionality is generally understood from the quantum spin Hall effect of light, according to which the transverse spin of surface or guided modes is locked to the propagation direction. So far, most previous works have been focused on the spin properties of circularly polarized dipolar sources. However, in near-field optics, higher-order multipole sources (e.g., quadrupole, octupole, and so on) might become relevant, so a more in-depth formulation would be highly valuable. Building on the angular spectrum representation, we provide a general, analytical, and ready-to-use treatment in order to address the near-field directionality of any multipole field, particularizing to the electric quadrupole case. Besides underpinning and upgrading the current framework on spin-dependent directionality, our results may open up new perspectives for engineering light-matter coupling at the nanoscale., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Several dynamical properties such as energy, momentum, angular momentum, and optical helicity have been recently reexamined in dispersive and lossless media. Here, we address a parallel derivation for the optical chirality, extending it so as to include dissipative effects as well. To this end, we first elaborate on the most complete form of the conservation law for the optical chirality, without any restrictions on the nature of the medium. As a result we find a general expression for the optical chirality density both in lossless and lossy dispersive media. Our definition is perfectly consistent with that originally introduced for electromagnetic fields in free space, and is applicable to any material system, including dielectrics, plasmonic nanostructures, and left-handed metamaterials., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Traditionally, in macroscopic geometrical optics intrinsic polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of light can be treated independently. However, at the subwavelength scale these properties appear to be coupled together, giving rise to the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light. In this work we address theoretically the classical emergence of the optical SOI at the nanoscale. By means of a full-vector analysis involving spherical vector waves we show that the spin-orbit factorizability condition, accounting the mutual influence between the amplitude (spin) and phase (orbit), is fulfilled only in the far-field limit. On the other side, in the near-field region, an additional relative phase introduces an extra term that hinders the factorization and reveals an intricate dynamical behavior according to the SOI regime. As a result, we find a suitable theoretical framework able to capture analytically the main features of intrinsic SOI of light. Besides allowing for a better understanding into the mechanism leading to its classical emergence at the nanoscale, our approach may be useful in order to design experimental setups that enhance the response of SOI-based effects., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We study the dynamics of a localized spin-1/2 driven by a time-periodic magnetic field that undergoes a topological transition. Despite the strongly non-adiabatic effects dominating the spin dynamics, we find that the field's topology appears clearly imprinted in the Floquet spin states through an effective Berry phase emerging in the quasienergy.
