2. Development and Validation of a Short Form of the Teacher Efficacy for Inclusive Practices Scale (TEIP-SF)

Abstract

High self-efficacy is a marker of successful teaching and is, therefore, a subject of great interest to research on inclusive education. One of the most frequently used instruments to assess such beliefs is the Teacher Efficacy for Inclusive Practice (TEIP) scale. Although used widely, some studies did not precisely replicate the original factor structure, and no short form of the TEIP scale currently exists, although this could enhance measurement efficiency. This study: (1) systematically assessed the TEIP scale's factor structure and psychometric properties; (2) identified potentially problematic items and developed a more concise short form of the scale; and (3) evaluated its dimensionality and criterion and convergent validities using three validation samples of teachers in three different countries (486 in Switzerland, 189 in Australia and 276 in Canada). Compared to the full-length TEIP scale, the TEIP-SF uses half the items, demonstrates better model fit and reveals a clearer distinction of domain-specific factors. In conclusion, the TEIP-SF represents a concise, efficient means of assessing teachers' self-efficacy about teaching in inclusive classrooms.

Abstract

Abstract It is crucial to control the tuning and improve the emission of a quantum emitter at the nanoscale. We report multiple Fano resonances in metallic nanostructures on an Er3+-doped tellurite glass. Periodic nanoslits were fabricated with a focused gallium ion beam on a gold thin film deposited on the tellurite glass. Is proposed a coupling function with Fano line-shape form, and the asymmetric parameter q for each resonance wavelength in the 515 to 535 nm region was calculated. This asymmetric resonance effect is a consequence of the quantum interaction between the continuum state, generated in the nanostructure, and the Stark splits of the $$^2$$ 2 H $$_{11/2}$$ 11 / 2 state.

Abstract

Future dynamics of biological invasions are highly uncertain because they depend on multiple social–ecological drivers. We used a scenario-based approach to explore potential management options for invasive species in Europe. During two workshops involving a multidisciplinary team of experts, we developed a management strategy arranged into 19 goals relating to policy, research, public awareness, and biosecurity. We conceived solutions for achieving these goals under different plausible future scenarios, and identified four interrelated recommendations around which any long-term strategy for managing invasive species can be structured: (1) a European biosecurity regime, (2) a dedicated communication strategy, (3) data standardization and management tools, and (4) a monitoring and assessment system. Finally, we assessed the feasibility of the management strategy and found substantial differences among scenarios. Collectively, our results indicate that it is time for a new strategy for managing biological invasions in Europe, one that is based on a more integrative approach across socioeconomic sectors and countries.

Abstract

Negative peer attitudes are a significant barrier to social participation of students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms. Although many intervention studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of interaction or disability awareness programmes in promoting positive peer attitudes, reliance on students' self-reported attitudes is prone to social desirability bias and is unable to capture implicit prejudice. The present study examined changes in students' explicit and implicit attitudes toward peers with disabilities after a curriculum-based intervention programme ("Prinzip Vielfalt"), which aims to promote an open-minded attitude toward human diversity. Teachers in 12 primary school classes in the experimental group (n = 195 students) used the programme for eight weeks, whereas a control group of 12 classes (n = 191 students) used no intervention. Students' pre- and post-intervention attitudes were assessed using an adapted version of the Chedoke–McMaster Attitudes Towards Children with Handicaps Scale and a disability Implicit Association Test for children. Post-intervention analyses revealed a significant relative improvement in explicit attitudes toward peers with disabilities in the experimental group compared to the control group (b = 0.20, 95% CI = [0.03; 0.37]) but no change in implicit attitudes (b = -0.03, 95% CI = [-0.10; 0.03]). Thus, while the intervention positively affected self-reported attitudes, implicit negative associations were unchanged. Using explicit and implicit measures of attitudes and attitude changes among children can provide valuable insights into the mechanisms and effectiveness of different intervention strategies. Abstract

Four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories may be obtained from configurations of D-branes in type IIA string theory. Unitary gauge theories with two-index representations, and orthogonal and symplectic gauge theories, are constructed from configurations containing orientifold planes. Models with two orientifold planes imply a compact dimension, and correspond to elliptic models. Lifting these configurations to M-theory allows one to derive the Seiberg-Witten curves for these gauge theories. We describe how the Seiberg-Witten curves, necessarily of infinite order, are obtained for these elliptic models. These curves are used to calculate the instanton expansion of the prepotential; we explicitly find the one-instanton prepotential for all the elliptic models considered., Comment: 13 pages. Abstract

We analyze the large N supergravity descriptions of the class of type IIB models T-dual to elliptic type IIA brane configurations containing two orientifold 6-planes and up to two NS 5-branes. The T-dual IIB configurations contain N D3-branes in the background of an orientifold 7-plane and, in some models, a Z_2 orbifold and/or D7-branes, which give rise to four-dimensional N=2 (or N=4) gauge theories with at most two factors. Abstract

Methods are reviewed for computing the instanton expansion of the prepotential for N=2 Seiberg-Witten theory with non-hyperelliptic curves. These results, when compared with the instanton expansion obtained from the microscopic Lagrangian, provide detailed tests of M-theory. Group theoretic regularities of F_ 1-inst allow one to "reverse engineer" a Seiberg-Witten curve for SU(N) with two antisymmetric representations and N_f \leq 3 fundamental hypermultiplet representations, a result not yet available by other methods. We give a unified analysis of four-dimensional elliptic models with N=2 supersymmetry and a simple gauge group, and their relation to M-theory. The description of new molecular markers can be important to diagnosis, classification, and treatment. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) polymodal channel is expressed in different neoplastic tissues and cell lines of breast cancer and associated with the regulation of tumor growth, tumor neurogenesis, cancer pain, and malignant progression of cancer. In primary and metastatic breast cancer tumors, TRPV1 is expressed during neoplastic transformation, invasive behavior, and resistance to cytotoxic therapy.Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the subcellular distribution of TRPV1 in invasive breast carcinomas and its association with survival.Methods: In 33 cases of invasive breast carcinomas, we identified immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent expression patterns of TRPV1 compared to healthy breast tissue. We characterized the expression of TRPV1 induced by estrogens in breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA to establish a model of the TRPV1–estrogen relationship regarding the malignant potential. We examined the association of TRPV1 patterns with patients’ survival with the Kaplan–Meyer model, using the log-rank test at 5 years of follow-up. The relation of TRPV1 expression patterns to the St. Gallen breast cancer subtypes was also tested.Results: Based on immunohistochemical expression pattern of TRPV1, we distinguished two main categories of breast cancer tissue, a “classical category” that exhibited diffuse expression of the channel and a “non-classical category” that expressed the channel in aggregates at the ER/Golgi and/or surrounding these structures. The classical pattern of TRPV1 was associated with a higher survival rate. In breast cancer cell lines, increasing doses of estrogens induced increased TRPV1 expression with nonclassical patterns at higher doses via a mechanism dependent on ER α.Conclusion: The expression and distribution of TRPV1 in invasive breast carcinomas may be considered as a biomarker for prognosis of the disease and a probable therapeutic target.
