Abstract

This thesis is about the graduate labour market. More specifically, this thesis deploys a market studies approach to examine how the graduate labour market is assembled in one specific instance: graduate recruitment program in the technology department of an international financial services corporation, GlobalFinCo. Based on fieldwork comprising 30 hours of observation, 20 in-depth interviews, dozens of shorter conversations, email communications, relevant documentation and online materials on the subject of graduate recruitment, and a diffractive (Barad, 2007) reading of empirical and theoretical materials, my study reveals that great efforts go into enacting the graduate labour market. Though they often remain, or are deliberately rendered, invisible, these efforts have material ethical and political effects. Drawing on market studies, I argue that the unfolding of the graduate recruitment process in the empirical site that I studied, GlobalFinCo, constituted an instance of assembling a politicised market order. I mobilise the concept of care to suggest that this assemblage is not ad-hoc and accidental, nor simply a manifestation of adversarial relations of capital and labour, but a provisional stabilisation of a multiplicity of efforts, agendas, and actions performed by a heterogeneous cast of actors. This study contributes to the labour market scholarship by indicating how a market studies approach can be usefully deployed to examine the enactment of market politics in concrete empirical settings. At the same time, this empirical account of the efforts and care that go into constructing and maintaining this assemblage offers a counterpoint to the critiques of market studies' inability to properly tackle the political relations inherent in markets. As such, through telling a "care-infused market tale" (de Wilde, 2020: 1), this study offers a contribution to the ongoing project of politicising market studies.

Abstract

Scholarship on the graduate labour market, preoccupied by structure, agency, and power, has largely focused on the market's discursive composition. It has not yet paid significant attention to the concrete, material apparatus of the market and how this shapes market outcomes. In contrast, we approach the construction of the graduate labour market from a new materialist perspective and with reference to the growing literature of 'market studies'. We consider the empirical case of a graduate recruitment hackathon to show how the hackathon's material features were implicated in enacting a specific occurrence of the graduate labour market. The agendas of the hackathon's designers and their visions of the graduate labour market were enacted in the hackathon's material arrangements, but this enactment was not always reliable: in some instances materiality resisted and erased corporate agendas. Our article contributes to the sociology of work by highlighting the dynamic relationship between materiality and power (re)production in the graduate labour market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The presented thesis provides us with a brief excursion into the organizational structure of the Office of the Financial Arbiter, mainly deals with the origin and development of this institute. These include the legal definition of its scope, method of establishment and termination of the institute, requirements for the performance of the Financial Arbitrator and his deputy. Broader opportunities in these areas are engaged in the first chapter. The second chapter is the introduction of practical outputs of the decision-making activities of the Financial Arbiter. Most often it is a fee disputes, disputes regarding the validity of the contract or compliance with its provisions, as well as disputes in the area of payments, life insurance and foreign exchange activities. The conclusion evaluates the long-term benefits of the institute of the Financial Arbitrator and outlined its future development.

Abstract

How should we write about markets? What responsibilities does this writing bring upon us? This paper offers an immanent critique of 'market studies' scholarship, and through this a call to reflection and reformed action. Turning the intellectual framework of market studies upon itself, we come to see its texts as performative and agential. We discuss these qualities and the associated responsibilities via a reading of literature from the domain of ethnography. An auto-ethnographic sketch of market writing allows us to consider the problematic nature of expertise for market studies scholars and the agency and power of our texts. We find a dual moment of performativity from which our texts emerge more powerful than their authors. On this basis we offer a vision of critical interventions embedded in our texts, underpinned by the intellectual axioms of the market studies programme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction.PET-CT is the new standard for staging of patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL). However, it is becoming obvious that the role of PET-CT in assessment of response is not limited to imaging at the end-of-treatment. In recent years the prognostic role of interim PET-CT and attempt to use PET response-adapted therapy has come under evaluation across a number of international studies with promising results. Here we report the results of a multicenter retrospective study of interim PET in HL.
