Hyperspectral sensors provide informative data in many fields related to Earth observation. On the coastal zone, the inversion of radiative transfer models of the light has shown the ability to estimate parameters characterizing the water column. Particularly the water column depth, its concentration of non-algal particles, in phytoplankton, and the bottom reflectance can be retrieved. In this paper, the ability of hyper-spectral data to estimate the parameters of the coastal zone thanks to the semi-analytical Lee model is studied according to the way the measurement is made: number of bands, impact of spectral response at each band and without any additional concepts such as probabilistic concepts.

We consider the study of performing likelihood-based inference in Lee's radiative transfer semi-analytical model. This model is widely used for the inversion of bathymetric products in coastal areas. We perform assessment of uncertainty on retrieved bathymetry in terms of hypothesis testing. Uncertainty results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations showing that inference based on the likelihood ratio statistic is much more reliable than the Wald statistic. Our results suggest that the Wald statistic based on Fisher observed information outperforms the Cramer-Rao lower bound in evaluating the estimation uncertainty. Confidence intervals derived from likelihood ratio statistic reveal the asymmetry of the maximum likelihood uncertainty arguing that variance-based uncertainties may be irrelevant for inferring uncertainty on bathymetric products.

In order to study the occurrence of Gymnodinium mikimotoi bloom on the French Atlantic coast, a three-dimensional model of primary production was set up. The biological model was coupled to a hydrodynamic model previously developed at Ifremer, by the intermediary of transport, diffusion and heat fluxes. The cycles of three limiting elements for the phytoplankton growth were modelised: nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon. The second phase of the study aimed at reproducing the summer dinoflagellate blooms. In this new approach a model of the species Gymnodinium mikimotoi was coupled with the previous biomass model which provides the physical and chemical environments. The study focuses on the results obtained by this specific sub-model. The parametrisation was based on some physiological studies reported from laboratory cultures and on parameters existing in the literature. Consistent with the observations, the model reproduces the sub-surface cell concentrations, in the zone of minimal turbulence. The formulation retained for the temperature effect on the growth rate leads to a strong influence of temperature on the onset of the bloom and the mortality rate controls the vertical distribution. Nevertheless, as formulated here, the model underestimates the cell density.

The French Atlantic shelf is subjected to strong anthropic influences (urban, industrial and agricultural discharges) of two main rivers (Loire and Gironde). The extension and consequences of these continental loadings for the nutrient and chlorophyll distribution have never been studied before on the Bay of Biscay continental shelf as a whole. We present the first synoptic view of the nutrient distribution and evolution on the French Atlantic shelf. Nutrient concentrations of the surface layer were studied during four cruises in April, June, September 1999 and March 2000. Until June, the freshwater inputs induce a nitrate gradient from river mouths to offshore waters in the vicinity of the 100 m isobath. The Redfield’s ratio study highlights the nitrate excess in river loadings. The early spring situation is characterised by high N:P ratios in front of the two estuaries and by a potential Si-limitation in the northern part. Nitrate removal continues in spite of the P-limitation and the increase in silicate concentrations during summer supposes high regeneration processes. At the end of summer, the water column is thermally stratified and the surface mixed layer is totally depleted in nitrate., La zona de plataforma del Atlántico francés está sujeta a una fuerte influencia antropogénica (urbana, industrial, descargas de la agricultura) principalmente de dos rios (Loire y Gironde). La extensión y consecuencias de tales descargas continentales sobre la distribución de nutrientes y clorofila, no ha sido todavía estudiada en la totalidad de la plataforma continental del golfo de Vizcaya. Aquí presentamos una visión sinóptica de la distribución y evolución de nutrientes sobre la plataforma del Atlántico francés. Las concentraciones de nutrientes de las capas superficiales han sido estudiadas durante 4 campañas en abril, junio, septiembre de 1999 y marzo de 2000. Hasta junio, los aportes de agua dulce inducen a un gradiente de nitratos desde la desembocadura del río hasta las aguas oceánicas en la vecindad de la isobata de 100 m. La determinación del cociente de Redfield evidencia una descarga del río con exceso de nitrato. La situación de principios de primavera está caracterizada por un cociente alto de N:P en contraste con los dos estuarios y por una potencial limitación de Si en la parte norte. La eliminación de nitrato que tiene lugar, a pesar de la limitación de fósforo y el incremento de la concentración de Si durante el verano, supone procesos de alta regeneración. Al final del verano, la columna de agua está termicamente estratificada y la superficie de la capa de mezcla está totalmente agotada de nitrato.

In order to simulate the influence of river loadings in coastal area, a three-dimensional model of primary production was set up. It is based on a hydrodynamic model previously developed at Ifremer. The calculation of the temperature and salinity takes into account the advection and the diffusion induced by tide, wind and density currents. The coupling with the biological model was done by the intermediary of transport, diffusion and heat fluxes. The cycles of three limiting elements for the phytoplankton growth were modelised : nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon. The second phase of the study aimed at reproducing the summer dinoflagellate blooms. In this new approach a model of the specie Gymnodinium mikimotoï was coupled with the previous biomass model which provides the physical and chemical environments. The parametrisation was based on some physiological studies reported from laboratory cultures and on parameters existing in the literature. The seasonal biological cycles were in good agreement with data cruises, with data obtained from network of surveillance (REPHY and RNO) and with satellital measurements of ocean colour. The simulation of the physical structure and of the main biological processes provides a synoptic view of the interactions between mesoscale physical and biological phenomena on the continental shelf. The model thus highlights the influence of upwellings, fronts and shallow waters on the primary production. This model also provides a better understanding of the influence of the Loire and the Gironde as it allow to estimate the share of the primary production related to the anthropic contributions of these two rivers. This is otherwise impossible to estimate from in-situ measurements. Lastly, the analysis of simulations over 10 years underlines the determining role of wind on the vertical structure of the water column, on the spreading of the river plumes and consequently, on the primary production., Afin de simuler l'influence des apports fluviaux en zone côtière, un modèle spatialisé de la production primaire sur le plateau continental atlantique français a été développé. Le modèle hydrodynamique tridimensionnel a été développé à l'Ifremer. Le calcul de la température et de la salinité prend en compte l'advection et la diffusion induites par la marée, le vent et les courants de densité. Le couplage avec le sous-modèle biologique se fait par l'intermédiaire du transport, de la diffusion et des flux de chaleur. Le modèle biologique décrit les cycles de l'azote, du phosphore et du silicium au travers du réseau trophique. Un modèle spécifique de l'espèce Gymnodinium mikimotoï a ensuite été introduit. La paramétrisation spécifique à cette espèce est fondée sur une étude bibliographique et sur des expériences en laboratoire. Une des originalités de l'étude réside dans la formulation du taux de mortalité en fonction de la turbulence et de la densité cellulaire. La nouveauté dans cette approche consiste à introduire un modèle de dynamique simple, pour une espèce phytoplanctonique particulière, dans un modèle tridimensionnel physico-biologique de biomasse globale. La calibration et la validation du modèle ont été réalisées grâce aux résultats desdifférentes campagnes océanographiques et aux mesures des réseaux de surveillance de l'Ifremer : REPHY et RNO. Cette étape s'est également appuyée sur l'utilisation des images satellitaires SeaWiFS de la couleur de l'eau. La simulation de la structure physique et des principaux processus biologiques fournit une vue synoptique des relations entre les phénomènes physiques et biologiques à méso-échelle sur le plateau continental. Le modèle simule ainsi, à une échelle saisonnière et inter annuelle, les cycles des sels nutritifs et du phytoplancton, en réponse aux forçages physiques et aux apports fluviaux. Le modèle met ainsi en évidencel'influence des upwellings, des fronts et des hauts fonds sur la production primaire. La reproduction des fluctuations interannuelles et la distribution verticale en subsurface des concentrations en Gymnodinium mikimotoï sont assez bien reproduites et l'étude est prometteuse. Un calcul numérique original a permis d'identifier le rôle relatif de la Loire et de la Gironde dans l'eutrophisation du plateau continental, paramètre qu'il est impossible d'estimer à partir des mesures in-situ. Enfin, l'analyse des simulations sur 10 ans souligne le rôle déterminant du vent sur la structure verticale de la colonne d'eau, sur l'extension ou le confinement des panaches qui, combiné aux apports fluviaux de sels nutritifs influence, la production primaire.

La distribution verticale en subsurface des concentrations en Gymnodinium mikimotoï est assez bien reproduite et l'étude est prometteuse. Les maximums de densité cellulaire simulés pour Gymnodinium mikimotoi'se situent en sub-surface, au niveau de la pycnocline, correspondant à la zone de turbulence minimale. La comparaison avec les mesures de terrain montre que le modèle reproduit correctement la distribution spatiale de cette espèce le long des côtes; néanmoins, il sous-estime les niveaux de concentrations maximales observés. Le choix retenu pour représenter le rôle de la température sur le taux de croissance conduit à un effet prépondérant sur le déclenchement du bloom. Le taux de mortalité contrôle par la suite la distribution verticale.
