Abstract Background Positive psychology interventions are known to have an impact on mental health as well as on a number of beneficial characteristics like optimism, gratitude and self-efficacy. The Positive Emotions Training (PoET) is one of the first holistic training programs covering eleven positive psychology constructs. The goal of this study was to test PoET’s feasibility in the general population and to assess possible effects on positive and negative mental health factors. Additionally, possible effects on optimism, gratitude, happiness, resilience, and self-efficacy were examined. Methods The sample (n = 101) was not randomized. Participants were allocated to PoET (n = 55) or control group (n = 46) that did not receive treatment initially. The PoET group completed two training sessions (3.5 h each) that were conducted in an online format with groups of about 30 people. All participants completed positive and negative mental health measures at the beginning of the first training session and at the beginning of the second one as well as 30 days after the second session. Two-factorial repeated measures ANOVAs were conducted to test for possible effects of PoET on mental health. Results The results showed that the contents were comprehensible and that the conduction of the training was feasible overall. In addition, a significant decrease of depression and anxiety symptoms as well as a significant increase of optimism were found in the PoET group. No significant changes were found in the control group. Conclusions Results indicate that PoET is an applicable intervention for improving mental health in the general population. Adapting interventions to the cultural and ethnic background of the target group enhances their acceptance and effectiveness. However, no systematic approach to cultural adaptation of IMI has been established so far. Therefore, this review aims to summarise components and procedures commonly used in the cultural adaptation of IMI for mental disorders, as well as the current evidence base on whether such a cultural adaptation leads to an increased acceptance, adherence, and effectiveness of IMI for mental disorders. Methods A systematic literature search will be performed using the following databases: MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, and WoS. The search term will include keywords related to cultural adaptation, IMI, and mental disorders/disturbances. Two independent reviewers will evaluate studies against inclusion and exclusion criteria and extract study and intervention characteristics, details on the cultural adaptation approach, and outcome data. Quality of evidence will be assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Reviewing Studies with Diverse Designs, and results will be synthesised qualitatively. Discussion Providing adequate mental healthcare regardless of cultural backgrounds is a major global health challenge. The planned systematic review will lay the foundation for the further development of the cultural adaptation of IMI for mental disorders by summarising the current state and providing recommendations for future research. Veterinary students are confronted with a high workload and an extensive number of examinations. However, the skills students gained in high school cannot serve as satisfactory coping strategies during veterinary training. This disparity can lead to test anxiety, as frequently reported by international surveys. In response, a pilot study was carried out to evaluate the effects of a newly developed training seminar to prevent and/or reduce test anxiety. The seminar was offered on a voluntary basis as a low-threshold intervention to first- and second-year veterinary students at three different veterinary schools in Germany. The intervention was offered in two different designs: in either a block or in a semester course containing cognitive and behavioral approaches as well as skill-deficit methods. By conducting a survey and interviews among the participants it was determined whether the contents of the seminar were perceived as helpful for counteracting test anxiety. The potential of the intervention was evaluated using a German test anxiety questionnaire (PAF). The contents of the training seminar were all assessed as beneficial but evaluated slightly differently by first- and second-year students. The results indicate that the seminar prevents and reduces test anxiety significantly compared to the control group students. The greatest effects were achieved by offering the intervention to first-year students and as a block course. As the participants benefit from the intervention independent of the extent of test anxiety, these results suggest that it may be profitable to integrate a workshop on coping strategies in the veterinary curriculum.
