Context: Chondrules originate from the reprocessing of dust grains. They are key building blocks of telluric planets, yet their formation, which must happen in strongly localized regions of high temperature, remains poorly understood. Aims: We examine the dust spatial distribution near regions of strong local heating produced by current sheets, as a step toward exploring a potential path for chondrule formation. We further aim to investigate current sheet formation under various conditions in protoplanetary disks in the presence of ambipolar diffusion and Ohmic resistivity and the effect of current sheet morphology on dust dynamics in their vicinity. Methods: We use the RAMSES code including modules for non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics and solution of the dynamics of multiple sizes of dust grains to compute unstratified shearing box simulations of current sheet formation. We investigate, through seven models the effect of the ambipolar diffusion and Ohmic resistivity strength, the initial density, and magnetic field, as well as the resolution and box size. Results: We find that current sheets form in all our models, with typical widths of 0.001-0.01 AU and that strong dust fraction variations occur for millimeter-sized grains. These variations are typically of an order of magnitude and up to two orders of magnitude for the most favorable cases. We also show that the box size and resolution has a strong impact on the current sheet distribution and intensity. Turbulence is a key process in many fields of astrophysics. Advances in numerical simulations of fluids over the last several decades have revolutionized our understanding of turbulence and related processes such as star formation and cosmic ray propagation. However, data from numerical simulations of astrophysical turbulence are often not made public. We introduce a new simulation-oriented database for the astronomical community: The Catalogue for Astrophysical Turbulence Simulations (CATS), located at www.mhdturbulence.com. CATS includes magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulent box simulation data products generated by the public codes athena++, arepo, enzo, and flash. CATS also includes several synthetic observational data sets, such as turbulent HI data cubes. We also include measured power spectra and 3-point correlation functions from some of these data. We present new Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) images of the central region of the W49A star-forming region at 3.6~cm and at 7~mm at resolutions of 0\farcs15 (1650 au) and 0\farcs04 (440 au), respectively. The 3.6~cm data reveal new morphological detail in the ultracompact \ion{H}{2} region population, as well as several previously unknown and unresolved sources. In particular, source A shows elongated, edge-brightened, bipolar lobes, indicative of a collimated outflow, and source E is resolved into three spherical components. We also present VLA observations of radio recombination lines at 3.6~cm and 7~mm, and IRAM Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations at 1.2~mm. Three of the smallest ultracompact \ion{H}{2} regions (sources A, B2 and G2) all show broad kinematic linewidths, with $\Delta$V$_{FWHM}\gtrsim$40~km~s$^{-1}$. A multi-line analysis indicates that broad linewidths remain after correcting for pressure broadening effects, suggesting the presence of supersonic flows. Substantial changes in linewidth over the 21 year time baseline at both 3.6 cm and 7 mm are found for source G2. At 3.6 cm, the linewidth of G2 changed from 31.7$\pm$1.8 km s$^{-1}$ to 55.6$\pm$2.7 km s$^{-1}$, an increase of $+$23.9$\pm$3.4 km s$^{-1}$. The G2 source was previously reported to have shown a 3.6~cm continuum flux density decrease of 40\% between 1994 and 2015. This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. A number of ultracompact H II regions in Galactic star forming environments have been observed to vary significantly in radio flux density on timescales of 10-20 years. Theory predicted that such variations should occur when the accretion flow that feeds a young massive star becomes unstable and clumpy. We have targeted the massive star-forming region W49A with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) for observations at 3.6 cm with the B-configuration at 0.8'' resolution, to compare to nearly identical observations taken almost 21 years earlier (February 2015 and August 1994). Most of the sources in the crowded field of ultracompact and hypercompact H II regions exhibit no significant changes over this time period. However, one source, W49A/G2, decreased by 20% in peak intensity (from 71+/-4 mJy/beam to 57+/-3 mJy/beam), and 40% in integrated flux (from 0.109+/-0.011 Jy to 0.067+/-0.007 Jy), where we cite 5 sigma errors in peak intensity, and 10% errors in integrated flux. We assess the contribution of dynamical hardening by direct three-body scattering interactions to the rate of stellar-mass black hole binary (BHB) mergers in galactic nuclei. We derive an analytic model for the single-binary encounter rate in a nucleus with spherical and disk components hosting a super-massive black hole (SMBH). We determine the total number of encounters $N_{\rm GW}$ needed to harden a BHB to the point that inspiral due to gravitational wave emission occurs before the next three-body scattering event. This is done independently for both the spherical and disk components. Using a Monte Carlo approach, we refine our calculations for $N_{\rm GW}$ to include gravitational wave emission between scattering events. For astrophysically plausible models we find that typically $N_{\rm GW} \lesssim$ 10. We find two separate regimes for the efficient dynamical hardening of BHBs: (1) spherical star clusters with high central densities, low velocity dispersions and no significant Keplerian component; and (2) migration traps in disks around SMBHs lacking any significant spherical stellar component in the vicinity of the migration trap, which is expected due to effective orbital inclination reduction of any spherical population by the disk. We also find a weak correlation between the ratio of the second-order velocity moment to velocity dispersion in galactic nuclei and the rate of BHB mergers, where this ratio is a proxy for the ratio between the rotation- and dispersion-supported components. Because disks enforce planar interactions that are efficient in hardening BHBs, particularly in migration traps, they have high merger rates that can contribute significantly to the rate of BHB mergers detected by the advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The fragmentation of filaments in molecular clouds has attracted a lot of attention as there seems to be a relation between the evolution of filaments and star formation. The study of the fragmentation process has been motivated by simple analytical models. However, only a few comprehensive studies have analysed the evolution of filaments using numerical simulations where the filaments form self-consistently as part of molecular clouds. We address the early evolution of pc-scale filaments that form within individual clouds. We focus on three questions: How do the line masses of filaments evolve? How and when do the filaments fragment? How does the fragmentation relate to the line masses of the filaments? We examine three simulated molecular clouds formed in kpc-scale numerical simulations performed with the FLASH code. We compare the properties of the identified filaments with the predictions of analytic filament stability models. The line masses and mass fraction enclosed in the identified filaments increase continuously after the onset of self-gravity. The first fragments appear early when the line masses lie well below the critical line mass of Ostriker's hydrostatic equilibrium solution. The average line masses of filaments identified in 3D density cubes increases far more quickly than those identified in 2D column density maps. Our results suggest that hydrostatic or dynamic compression from the surrounding cloud has a significant impact on the early dynamical evolution of filaments. A simple model of an isolated, isothermal cylinder may not provide a good approach for fragmentation analysis. Caution must be exercised in interpreting distributions of properties of filaments identified in column density maps, especially in the case of low-mass filaments. We have recently published observations of significant flux density variations at 1.3 cm in HII regions in the star forming regions Sgr B2 Main and North (De Pree et al. 2014). To further study these variations, we have made new 7 mm continuum and recombination line observations of Sgr B2 at the highest possible angular resolution of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We have observed Sgr B2 Main and North at 42.9 GHz and at 45.4 GHz in the BnA configuration (Main) and the A configuration (North). We compare these new data to archival VLA 7 mm continuum data of Sgr B2 Main observed in 2003 and Sgr B2 North observed in 2001. We find that one of the 41 known ultracompact and hypercompact HII regions in Sgr B2 (K2-North) has decreased $\sim$27% in flux density from 142$\pm$14 mJy to 103$\pm$10 mJy (2.3$\sigma$) between 2001 and 2012. A second source, F3c-Main has increased $\sim$30% in flux density from 82$\pm$8 mJy to 107 $\pm$11 mJy (1.8$\sigma$) between 2003 and 2012. F3c-Main was previously observed to increase in flux density at 1.3 cm over a longer time period between 1989 and 2012 (De Pree et al. 2014). An observation of decreasing flux density, such as that observed in K2-North, is particularly significant since such a change is not predicted by the classical hypothesis of steady expansion of HII regions during massive star accretion. Luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) have enhanced star formation rates and compact morphologies. We combine Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with HI data of 29 LCBGs at redshift z~0 to understand their nature. We find that local LCBGs have high atomic gas fractions (~50%) and star formation rates per stellar mass consistent with some high redshift star forming galaxies. Many local LCBGs also have clumpy morphologies, with clumps distributed across their disks. Although rare, these galaxies appear to be similar to the clumpy star forming galaxies commonly observed at z~1-3. Local LCBGs separate into three groups: 1. Interacting galaxies (~20%); 2. Clumpy spirals (~40%); 3. Non-clumpy, non-spirals with regular shapes and smaller effective radii and stellar masses (~40%). It seems that the method of building up a high gas fraction, which then triggers star formation, is not the same for all local LCBGs. This may lead to a dichotomy in galaxy characteristics. We consider possible gas delivery scenarios and suggest that clumpy spirals, preferentially located in clusters and with companions, are smoothly accreting gas from tidally disrupted companions and/or intracluster gas enriched by stripped satellites. Conversely, as non-clumpy galaxies are preferentially located in the field and tend to be isolated, we suggest clumpy, cold streams, which destroy galaxy disks and prevent clump formation, as a likely gas delivery mechanism for these systems. We discuss the sensitivity of a 100 TeV $pp$ collider to heavy resonances produced in longitudinal vector boson scattering and decaying to a pair of Higgs bosons. A Monte Carlo study has been performed using the $H \to \tau \tau$ decay channel for both Higgs bosons, comparing the kinematics of such a signal to the irreducible Standard Model backgrounds. The results are presented in the context of a phenomenological model of a resonance ($\eta$) coupling to goldstone modes, $V_L V_L \to \eta \to HH$, as can arise in composite Higgs models. With a fractional width of 70% (20%), the $5 \sigma$ discovery reach is 4.2 (2.9) TeV in resonance mass for 10 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We also discuss the dependence of the mass reach on the collider energy and integrated luminosity.

Over the past decade, a large number of jet substructure observables have been proposed in the literature, and explored at the LHC experiments. Such observables attempt to utilize the internal structure of jets in order to distinguish those initiated by quarks, gluons, or by boosted heavy objects, such as top quarks and W bosons. This report, originating from and motivated by the BOOST2013 workshop, presents original particle-level studies that aim to improve our understanding of the relationships between jet substructure observables, their complementarity, and their dependence on the underlying jet properties, particularly the jet radius and jet transverse momentum. We use hydrodynamical simulations in a $(256\;{\rm pc})^3$ periodic box to model the impact of supernova (SN) explosions on the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) for initial densities $n = 0.5-30$ cm$^{-3}$ and SN rates $1-720$ Myr$^{-1}$. We include radiative cooling, diffuse heating, and the formation of molecular gas using a chemical network. The SNe explode either at random positions, at density peaks, or both. We further present a model combining thermal energy for resolved and momentum input for unresolved SNe. Random driving at high SN rates results in hot gas ($T\gtrsim 10^6$ K) filling $> 90$% of the volume. This gas reaches high pressures ($10^4 < P/k_\mathrm{B} < 10^7$ K cm$^{-3}$) due to the combination of SN explosions in the hot, low density medium and confinement in the periodic box. These pressures move the gas from a two-phase equilibrium to the single-phase, cold branch of the cooling curve. The molecular hydrogen dominates the mass ($>50$%), residing in small, dense clumps. Such a model might resemble the dense ISM in high-redshift galaxies. Peak driving results in huge radiative losses, producing a filamentary ISM with virtually no hot gas, and a small molecular hydrogen mass fraction ($\ll 1$%). Varying the ratio of peak to random SNe yields ISM properties in between the two extremes, with a sharp transition for equal contributions. The velocity dispersion in HI remains $\lesssim 10$ km s$^{-1}$ in all cases. For peak driving the velocity dispersion in H$_\alpha$ can be as high as $70$ km s$^{-1}$ due to the contribution from young, embedded SN remnants., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Accretion flows onto massive stars must transfer mass so quickly that they are themselves gravitationally unstable, forming dense clumps and filaments. These density perturbations interact with young massive stars, emitting ionizing radiation, alternately exposing and confining their HII regions. As a result, the HII regions are predicted to flicker in flux density over periods of decades to centuries rather than increasing monotonically in size as predicted by simple Spitzer solutions. We have recently observed the Sgr B2 region at 1.3 cm with the VLA in its three hybrid configurations (DnC, CnB and BnA) at a resolution of 0.25''. These observations were made to compare in detail with matched continuum observations from 1989. At 0.25'' resolution, Sgr B2 contains 41 UC HII regions, 6 of which are hypercompact. The new observations of Sgr B2 allow comparison of relative peak flux densites for the HII regions in Sgr B2 over a 23 year time baseline (1989-2012) in one of the most source-rich massive star forming regions in the Milky Way. The new 1.3 cm continuum images indicate that four of the 41 UC HII regions exhibit significant changes in their peak flux density, with one source (K3) dropping in peak flux density, and the other 3 sources (F10.303, F1 and F3) increasing in peak flux density. The results are consistent with statistical predictions from simulations of high mass star formation, suggesting that they offer a solution to the lifetime problem for ultracompact HII regions., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We study the relationship between the H2 and CO abundances in simulated molecular clouds using a fully dynamical model of magnetized turbulence coupled to a detailed chemical network. We find that the CO-to-H2 conversion factor for a given molecular cloud, the so-called X-factor, is determined primarily by the mean extinction of the cloud, rather than by its metallicity. The most usual tracer of molecular gas is line emission from CO. However, the reliability of that tracer has long been questioned in environments different from the Milky Way. We study the relationship between H2 and CO abundances using a fully dynamical model of magnetized turbulence coupled to a chemical network simplified to follow only the dominant pathways for H2 and CO formation and destruction, and including photodissociation using a six-ray approximation. We find that the abundance of H2 is primarily determined by the amount of time available for its formation, which is proportional to the product of the density and the metallicity, but insensitive to photodissociation. Photodissociation only becomes important at extinctions under a few tenths of a visual magnitude, in agreement with both observational and prior theoretical work. On the other hand, CO forms quickly, within a dynamical time, but its abundance depends primarily on photodissociation, with only a weak secondary dependence on H2 abundance. As a result, there is a sharp cutoff in CO abundance at mean visual extinctions A_V < 3. At lower values of A_V we find that the ratio of H2 column density to CO emissivity X_CO is proportional to A_V^(-3.5). This explains the discrepancy observed in low metallicity systems between cloud masses derived from CO observations and other techniques such as infrared emission. Our work predicts that CO-bright clouds in low metallicity systems should be systematically larger or denser than Milky Way clouds, or both. Our results further explain the narrow range of observed molecular cloud column densities as a threshold effect, without requiring the assumption of virial equilibrium., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. Outward migration of low-mass planets has recently been shown to be a possibility in non-barotropic disks. We examine the consequences of this result in evolutionary models of protoplanetary disks. Planet migration occurs towards equilibrium radii with zero torque. These radii themselves migrate inwards because of viscous accretion and photoevaporation. We show that as the surface density and temperature fall, the planet orbital migration and disk depletion timescales eventually become comparable, with the precise timing depending on the mass of the planet. When this occurs, the planet decouples from the equilibrium radius. At this time, however, the gas surface density is already too low to drive substantial further migration. A higher mass planet, of 10 Earth masses, can open a gap during the late evolution of the disk, and stops migrating. Low mass planets, with 1 or 0.1 Earth masses, released beyond 1 AU in our models, avoid migrating into the star. We analyze the statistics and star formation rate obtained in high-resolution numerical experiments of forced supersonic turbulence, and compare with observations. We concentrate on a systematic comparison of solenoidal (divergence-free) and compressive (curl-free) forcing, which are two limiting cases of turbulence driving. Our results show that for the same RMS Mach number, compressive forcing produces a three times larger standard deviation of the density probability distribution. Supersonic turbulence in molecular clouds is a dominant agent that strongly affects the clouds' evolution and star formation activity. Turbulence may be initiated and maintained by a number of processes, acting at a wide range of physical scales. By examining the dynamical state of molecular clouds, it is possible to assess the primary candidates for how the turbulent energy is injected. The aim of this paper is to constrain the scales at which turbulence is driven in the molecular interstellar medium, by comparing simulated molecular spectral line observations of numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models and molecular spectral line observations of real molecular clouds. We use principal component analysis, applied to both models and observational data, to extract a quantitative measure of the driving scale of turbulence. We find that only models driven at large scales (comparable to, or exceeding, the size of the cloud) are consistent with observations. This result applies also to clouds with little or no internal star formation activity. Astrophysical processes acting on large scales, including supernova-driven turbulence, magnetorotational instability, or spiral shock forcing, are viable candidates for the generation and maintenance of molecular cloud turbulence. Small scale driving by sources internal to molecular clouds, such as outflows, can be important on small scales, but cannot replicate the observed large-scale velocity fluctuations in the molecular interstellar medium., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present results from high-resolution three-dimensional simulations of turbulent interstellar gas that self-consistently follow its coupled thermal, chemical and dynamical evolution, with a particular focus on the formation and destruction of H2 and CO. We quantify the formation timescales for H2 and CO in physical conditions corresponding to those found in nearby giant molecular clouds, and show that both species form rapidly, with chemical timescales that are comparable to the dynamical timescale of the gas. We also investigate the spatial distributions of H2 and CO, and how they relate to the underlying gas distribution. We show that H2 is a good tracer of the gas distribution, but that the relationship between CO abundance and gas density is more complex. The CO abundance is not well-correlated with either the gas number density n or the visual extinction A_V: both have a large influence on the CO abundance, but the inhomogeneous nature of the density field produced by the turbulence means that n and A_V are only poorly correlated. There is a large scatter in A_V, and hence CO abundance, for gas with any particular density, and similarly a large scatter in density and CO abundance for gas with any particular visual extinction. This will have important consequences for the interpretation of the CO emission observed from real molecular clouds. Finally, we also examine the temperature structure of the simulated gas. We show that the molecular gas is not isothermal. Most of it has a temperature in the range of 10--20 K, but there is also a significant fraction of warmer gas, located in low-extinction regions where photoelectric heating remains effective., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures; minor revisions, matches version accepted by MNRAS

We study two limiting cases of turbulence forcing in numerical experiments: solenoidal (divergence-free) forcing, and compressive (curl-free) forcing, and compare our results to observations reported in the literature. We solve the equations of hydrodynamics on grids with up to 1024^3 cells for purely solenoidal and purely compressive forcing. Eleven lower-resolution models with mixtures of both forcings are also analysed. We find velocity dispersion--size relations consistent with observations and independent numerical simulations, irrespective of the type of forcing. However, compressive forcing yields stronger turbulent compression at the same RMS Mach number than solenoidal forcing, resulting in a three times larger standard deviation of volumetric and column density probability distributions (PDFs). We conclude that the strong dependence of the density PDF on the type of forcing must be taken into account in any theory using the PDF to predict properties of star formation. We supply a quantitative description of this dependence. We explore what dominant physical mechanism sets the kinetic energy contained in neutral, atomic (HI) gas. We compare the HI line widths predicted from turbulence driven by supernova (SN) explosions and magneto-rotational instability (MRI) to direct observations in 11 disk galaxies. We use high-quality maps of the HI mass surface density and line width, obtained by the THINGS survey. We show that all sample galaxies exhibit a systematic radial decline in the HI line width, which appears to be a generic property of HI disks and also implies a radial decline in kinetic energy density of HI. At a galactocentric radius of r25 there is a characteristic value of the HI velocity dispersion of $10\pm2$ \kms. Inside this radius, galaxies show HI line widths above the thermal value expected from a warm HI component, implying that turbulence drivers must be responsible for maintaining this line width. Therefore, we compare maps of HI kinetic energy to maps of the star formation rate (SFR) and to predictions for energy generated by MRI. We find a positive correlation between kinetic energy of HI and SFR. For a given turbulence dissipation timescale we can estimate the energy input required to maintain the observed kinetic energy. The SN rate implied by the observed recent SFR is sufficient to maintain the observed velocity dispersion, if the SN feedback efficiency is at least \epsilon_SN\simeq0.1. Beyond r25, this efficiency would have to increase to unrealistic values, $\epsilon>1$, suggesting that mechanical energy from young stars does not supply most energy in outer disks. On the other hand, both thermal broadening and turbulence driven by MRI can produce the velocity dispersions and kinetic energies that we observe in this regime.

Great strides have been made in the last two decades in determining how galaxies evolve from their initial dark matter seeds to the complex structures we observe at z=0. The role of mergers has been documented through both observations and simulations, numerous satellites that may represent these initial dark matter seeds have been discovered in the Local Group, high redshift galaxies have been revealed with monstrous star formation rates, and the gaseous cosmic web has been mapped through absorption line experiments. Despite these efforts, the dark matter simulations that include baryons are still unable to accurately reproduce galaxies. One of the major problems is our incomplete understanding of how a galaxy accretes its baryons and subsequently forms stars. Galaxy formation simulations have been unable to accurately represent the required gas physics on cosmological timescales, and observations have only just begun to detect the star formation fuel over a range of redshifts and environments. How galaxies obtain gas and subsequently form stars is a major unsolved, yet tractable problem in contemporary extragalactic astrophysics. Contradicting results have been reported in the literature with respect to the performance of the numerical techniques employed for the study of supersonic turbulence. We aim at characterising the performance of different particle-based and grid-based techniques on the modelling of decaying supersonic turbulence. Four different grid codes (ENZO, FLASH, TVD, ZEUS) and three different SPH codes (GADGET, PHANTOM, VINE) are compared. We additionally analysed two calculations denoted as PHANTOM A and PHANTOM B using two different implementations of artificial viscosity. Our analysis indicates that grid codes tend to be less dissipative than SPH codes, though details of the techniques used can make large differences in both cases. For example, the Morris & Monaghan viscosity implementation for SPH results in less dissipation (PHANTOM B and VINE versus GADGET and PHANTOM A). For grid codes, using a smaller diffusion parameter leads to less dissipation, but results in a larger bottleneck effect (our ENZO versus FLASH runs). As a general result, we find that by using a similar number of resolution elements N for each spatial direction means that all codes (both grid-based and particle-based) show encouraging similarity of all statistical quantities for isotropic supersonic turbulence on spatial scales k

We estimate a characteristic timescale for star formation in the spiral arms of disk galaxies, going from atomic hydrogen (HI) to dust-enshrouded massive stars. Drawing on high-resolution HI data from The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey and 24$\mu$m images from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey we measure the average angular offset between the HI and 24$\mu$m emissivity peaks as a function of radius, for a sample of 14 nearby disk galaxies. We model these offsets assuming an instantaneous kinematic pattern speed, $\Omega_p$, and a timescale, t(HI-->24$\mu$m), for the characteristic time span between the dense \hi phase and the formation of massive stars that heat the surrounding dust. Fitting for $\Omega_p$ and t(HI-->24$\mu$m), we find that the radial dependence of the observed angular offset (of the \hi and 24$\mu$m emission) is consistent with this simple prescription; the resulting corotation radii of the spiral patterns are typically $R_{cor}\simeq 2.7 R_{s}$, consistent with independent estimates. The resulting values of t(HI-->24$\mu$m) for the sample are in the range 1--4 Myr. We have explored the possible impact of non-circular gas motions on the estimate of t(HI-->24$\mu$m) and have found it to be substantially less than a factor of 2. This implies that a short timescale for the most intense phase of the ensuing star formation in spiral arms, and implies a considerable fraction of molecular clouds exist only for a few Myr before forming stars. However, our analysis does not preclude that some molecular clouds persist considerably longer. If much of the star formation in spiral arms occurs within this short interval t(HI-->24$\mu$m), then star formation must be inefficient, in order to avoid the short-term depletion of the gas reservoir., Comment: Accepted for publication in the AJ special THINGS issue. The formation of the first stars out of metal-free gas appears to result in stars at least an order of magnitude more massive than in the present-day case. We here consider what controls the transition from a primordial to a modern initial mass function. It has been proposed that this occurs when effective metal line cooling occurs at a metallicity threshold of Z/Z_sun > 10^{-3.5}. We study the influence of low levels of metal enrichment on the cooling and collapse of initially ionized gas in small protogalactic halos using three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations with particle splitting. Our initial conditions represent protogalaxies forming within a previously ionized H ii region that has not yet had time to cool and recombine. These differ considerably from those used in simulations predicting a metallicity threshold, where the gas was initially cold and only partially ionized. In the centrally condensed potential that we study here, a wide variety of initial conditions for the gas yield a monolithic central collapse. Our models show no fragmentation during collapse to number densities as high as 10^5 cm^{-3}, for metallicities reaching as high as 10^{-1} Z_sun in one rotating case, far above the threshold suggested by previous work. Rotation allows for the formation of gravitationally stable gas disks over large fractions of the local Hubble time. Turbulence slows the growth of the central density slightly, but both spherically symmetric and turbulent initial conditions collapse and form a single sink particle. (Abridged) The formation of molecular clouds (MCs) from the diffuse interstellar gas appears to be a necessary step for star formation, as young stars invariably occur within them. However, the mechanisms controlling the formation of MCs remain controversial. In this contribution, we focus on their formation in compressive flows driven by interstellar turbulence and large-scale gravitational instability. Turbulent compression driven by supernovae appears insufficient to explain the bulk of cloud and star formation. Rather, gravity must be important at all scales, driving the compressive flows that form both clouds and cores. Cooling and thermal instability allow the formation of dense gas out of moderate, transonic compressions in the warm diffuse gas, and drive turbulence into the dense clouds. MCs may be produced by an overshoot beyond the thermal-pressure equilibrium between the cold and warm phases of atomic gas, caused by some combination of the ram pressure of compression and the self-gravity of the compressed gas. In this case, properties of the clouds such as their mass, mass-to-magnetic flux ratio, and total kinetic and gravitational energies are in general time-variable quantities. In cold dark matter cosmological models, the first stars to form are believed to do so within small protogalaxies. We wish to understand how the evolution of these early protogalaxies changes once the gas forming them has been enriched with small quantities of heavy elements, which are produced and dispersed into the intergalactic medium by the first supernovae. Our initial conditions represent protogalaxies forming within a fossil H II region, a previously ionized region that has not yet had time to cool and recombine. We study the influence of low levels of metal enrichment on the cooling and collapse of ionized gas in small protogalactic halos using three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations that incorporate the effects of the appropriate chemical and thermal processes. Our previous simulations demonstrated that for metallicities Z < 0.001 Z_sun, metal line cooling alters the density and temperature evolution of the gas by less than 1% compared to the metal-free case at densities below 1 cm-3) and temperatures above 2000 K. Here, we present the results of high-resolution simulations using particle splitting to improve resolution in regions of interest. (Abridged). In this paper, we present results from a large set of numerical simulations that demonstrate that H2 formation occurs rapidly in turbulent gas. Starting with purely atomic hydrogen, large quantities of molecular hydrogen can be produced on timescales of 1 -- 2 Myr, given turbulent velocity dispersions and magnetic field strengths consistent with observations. Moreover, as our simulations underestimate the effectiveness of H2 self-shielding and dust absorption, we can be confident that the molecular fractions that we compute are strong lower limits on the true values. The formation of large quantities of H2 on the timescale required by rapid cloud formation models therefore appears to be entirely plausible. We also investigate the density and temperature distributions of gas in our model clouds. We show that the density probability distribution function is approximately log-normal, with a dispersion that agrees well with the prediction of Padoan, Nordlund & Jones (1997). The temperature distribution is similar to that of a polytrope, with an effective polytropic index gamma_eff \simeq 0.8, although at low gas densities, the scatter of the actual gas temperature around this mean value is considerable, and the polytropic approximation does not capture the full range of behaviour of the gas., Comment: 66 pages, 34 figures, AASTex. We study the formation of H2 in the ISM, using a modified version of the astrophysical magnetohydrodynamical code ZEUS-MP that includes a non-equilibrium treatment of the formation and destruction of H2. We examine two different approximations to treat the shielding of H2 against photodissociation: a local approximation, which gives us a solid lower bound on the amount of shielding, and a method based on ray-tracing that is considerably more accurate in some circumstances but that produces results that are harder to clearly interpret. Either approximation allows one to perform three-dimensional high-resolution simulations of cloud formation with only modest computational resources. We also include a detailed treatment of the thermal behaviour of the gas. In this paper, we focus on the problem of molecular cloud formation in gravitationally unstable, initially static gas. We show that in these conditions, and for initial densities consistent with those observed in the cold, neutral atomic phase of the interstellar medium, H2 formation occurs on a timescale t > 10 Myr, comparable to or longer than the gravitational free-fall timescale of the cloud. We also show that the collapsing gas very quickly reaches thermal equilibrium and that the equation of state of the gas is generally softer than isothermal. Finally, we demonstrate that although these results show little sensitivity to variations in most of our simulation parameters, they are highly sensitive to the assumed initial density n_i. We review the properties of turbulent molecular clouds (MCs), focusing on the physical processes that influence star formation (SF). MC formation appears to occur during large-scale compression of the diffuse ISM driven by supernovae, magnetorotational instability, or gravitational instability in galactic disks of stars and gas. The compressions generate turbulence that can accelerate molecule production and produce the observed morphology. We then review the properties of MC turbulence, including density enhancements observed as clumps and cores, magnetic field structure, driving scales, the relation to observed scaling relations, and the interaction with gas thermodynamics. We argue that MC cores are dynamical, not quasistatic, objects with relatively short lifetimes not exceeding a few megayears. We review their morphology, magnetic fields, density and velocity profiles, and virial budget. Next, we discuss how MC turbulence controls SF. On global scales turbulence prevents monolithic collapse of the clouds; on small scales it promotes local collapse. We discuss its effects on the SF efficiency, and critically examine the possible relation between the clump mass distribution and the initial mass function, and then turn to the redistribution of angular momentum during collapse and how it determines the multiplicity of stellar systems. Finally, we discuss the importance of dynamical interactions between protostars in dense clusters, and the effect of the ionization and winds from those protostars on the surrounding cloud. This paper describes ZEUS-MP, a multi-physics, massively parallel, message- passing implementation of the ZEUS code. ZEUS-MP differs significantly from the ZEUS-2D code, the ZEUS-3D code, and an early "version 1" of ZEUS-MP distributed publicly in 1999. ZEUS-MP offers an MHD algorithm better suited for multidimensional flows than the ZEUS-2D module by virtue of modifications to the Method of Characteristics scheme first suggested by Hawley and Stone (1995), and is shown to compare quite favorably to the TVD scheme described by Ryu et. al (1998). ZEUS-MP is the first publicly-available ZEUS code to allow the advection of multiple chemical (or nuclear) species. Radiation hydrodynamic simulations are enabled via an implicit flux-limited radiation diffusion (FLD) module. The hydrodynamic, MHD, and FLD modules may be used in one, two, or three space dimensions. Self gravity may be included either through the assumption of a GM/r potential or a solution of Poisson's equation using one of three linear solver packages (conjugate-gradient, multigrid, and FFT) provided for that purpose. Point-mass potentials are also supported. Because ZEUS-MP is designed for simulations on parallel computing platforms, considerable attention is paid to the parallel performance characteristics of each module. Strong-scaling tests involving pure hydrodynamics (with and without self-gravity), MHD, and RHD are performed in which large problems (256^3 zones) are distributed among as many as 1024 processors of an IBM SP3. We study the influence of low levels of metal enrichment on the cooling and collapse of ionized gas in small protogalactic halos using three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. Our initial conditions represent protogalaxies forming within a fossil HII region -- a previously ionized HII region which has not yet had time to cool and recombine. Prior to cosmological reionization, such regions should be relatively common, since the characteristic lifetimes of the likely ionizing sources are significantly shorter than a Hubble time. We show that in these regions, H_2 is the dominant and most effective coolant, and that it is the amount of H_2 formed that determines whether or not the gas can collapse and form stars. At the low metallicities (Z < 10^{-3} Z_sun) thought to be associated with the transition from population III to early population II star formation, metal line cooling has an almost negligible effect on the evolution of low density gas, altering the density and temperature evolution of the gas by less than 1% compared to the metal-free case at densities below 1 cm^{-3} and temperatures above 2000 K. Although there is evidence that metal line cooling becomes more effective at higher density, we find no significant differences in behaviour from the metal-free case at any density below our sink particle creation threshold at n = 500 cm^{-3}. Increasing the metallicity also increases the importance of metal line cooling, but it does not significantly affect the dynamical evolution of the low density gas until Z = 0.1 Z_sun. A roughly constant temperature over a wide range of densities is maintained in molecular clouds through radiative heating and cooling. An isothermal equation of state is therefore frequently employed in molecular cloud simulations. However, the dynamical processes in molecular clouds include shock waves, expansion waves, cooling induced collapse and baroclinic vorticity, all incompatible with the assumption of a purely isothermal flow. Here, we incorporate an energy equation including all the important heating and cooling rates and a simple chemical network into simulations of three-dimensional, hydrodynamic, decaying turbulence. This allows us to test the accuracy of the isothermal assumption by directly comparing a model run with the modified energy equation to an isothermal model. We compute an extreme case in which the initial turbulence is sufficiently strong to dissociate much of the gas and alter the specific heat ratio. The molecules then reform as the turbulence weakens. We track the true specific heat ratio as well as its effective value. We analyse power spectra, vorticity and shock structures, and discuss scaling laws for decaying turbulence. We derive some limitations to the isothermal approximation for simulations of the interstellar medium using simple projection techniques. Overall, even given the extreme conditions, we find that an isothermal flow provides an adequate physical and observational description of many properties. (abridged version) Identifying the processes that determine the initial mass function of stars (IMF) is a fundamental problem in star formation theory. One of the major uncertainties is the exact chemical state of the star forming gas and its influence on the dynamical evolution. Most simulations of star forming clusters use an isothermal equation of state (EOS). We address these issues and study the effect of a piecewise polytropic EOS on the formation of stellar clusters in turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds. We increase the polytropic exponent gamma from 0.7 to 1.1 at some chosen density n_c, which we vary from from 4.3x10^4 cm^-3 to 4.3x10^7 cm^-3. The change of thermodynamic state at n_c selects a characteristic mass scale for fragmentation M_ch, which we relate to the peak of the observed IMF. We model how repeated supernova explosions in high-redshift dwarf starburst galaxies drive superbubbles and winds out of the galaxies. We compute the efficiencies of metal and mass ejection and energy transport from the galactic potentials, including the effect of cosmological infall of external gas. The starburst bubbles quickly blow out of small, high-redshift, galactic disks, but must compete with the ram pressure of the infalling gas to escape into intergalactic space. We show that the assumed efficiency of the star formation rate dominates the bubble evolution and the metal, mass, and energy feedback efficiencies. With star formation efficiency f*=0.01, the ram pressure of infall can confine the bubbles around high-redshift dwarf galaxies with circular velocities v_c>52 km/s. We can expect high metal and mass ejection efficiencies, and moderate energy transport efficiencies in halos with v_c~30-50 km/s and f*~0.01 as well as in halos with v_c~100 km/s and f*>>0.01. Such haloes collapse successively from 1-2 sigma peaks in LambdaCDM Gaussian density perturbations as time progresses. These dwarf galaxies can probably enrich low and high-density regions of intergalactic space with metals to 10^-3-10^-2 Zsun as they collapse at z~8 and z<5 respectively. They also may be able to provide adequate turbulent energy to prevent the collapse of other nearby halos, as well as to significantly broaden Lyman-alpha absorption lines to v_rms~20-40 km/s. We compute the timescales for the next starbursts if gas freely falls back after a starburst, and find that, for star formation efficiencies as low as f*<0.01, the next starburst should occur in less than half the Hubble time at the collapse redshift. Several lines of evidence suggest that protogalactic and galactic environments manage to grow magnetic field very rapidly. This makes the theoretical problem of achieving rapid growth of magnetic fields in such environments difficult. Following Balsara, Benjamin and Cox (2001), we show that a multiphase ISM that is dominated by realistic energy inputs via supernova explosions will naturally become a strongly turbulent medium with large positive and negative values of the fluid helicity. The resultant interstellar turbulence seems to have some of the essential characteristics of a fast dynamo. Magnetic field growth in such a turbulent dynamo is studied in this paper. It is shown that the field undergoes a linear phase of evolution where it has a time of growth that is comparable to the eddy turn-over time. Energetics, power spectra, statistics and structures of the turbulent dynamo are studied here. It is shown that despite the fact that the ISM is driven by compressive motions, the kinetic energy in this high Mach number flow is mainly concentrated in solenoidal motions rather than compressive motions., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures. (Modified) The scaling of velocity fluctuation, dv, as a function of spatial scale L in molecular clouds can be measured from size-linewidth relations, principal component analysis, or line centroid variation. Differing values of the power law index of the scaling relation dv = L^(g3D) in 3D are given by these different methods: the first two give g3D=0.5, while line centroid analysis gives g3D=0. This discrepancy has previously not been fully appreciated, as the variation of projected velocity line centroid fluctuations (dv_{lc} = L^(g2D)) is indeed described, in 2D, by g2D=0.5. However, if projection smoothing is accounted for, this implies that g3D=0. We suggest that a resolution of this discrepancy can be achieved by accounting for the effect of density inhomogeneity on the observed g2D obtained from velocity line centroid analysis. Numerical simulations of compressible turbulence are used to show that the effect of density inhomogeneity statistically reverses the effect of projection smoothing in the case of driven turbulence so that velocity line centroid analysis does indeed predict that g2D=g3D=0.5. Using our numerical results we can restore consistency between line centroid analysis, principal component analysis and size-linewidth relations, and we derive g3D=0.5, corresponding to shock-dominated (Burgers) turbulence. The dynamical state of star-forming molecular clouds cannot be understood without determining the structure and strength of their magnetic fields. Measurements of polarized far-infrared radiation from thermally aligned dust grains are used to map the orientation of the field and estimate its strength, but the accuracy of the results has remained in doubt. In order to assess the reliability of this method, we apply it to simulated far-infrared polarization maps derived from three-dimensional simulations of supersonic magnetohydrodynamical turbulence, and compare the estimated values to the known magnetic field strengths in the simulations. We investigate the effects of limited telescope resolution and self-gravity on the structure of the maps. Limited observational resolution affects the field structure such that small scale variations can be completely suppressed, thus giving the impression of a very homogeneous field. The Chandrasekhar-Fermi method of estimating the mean magnetic field in a turbulent medium is tested, and we suggest an extension to measure the rms field. Both methods yield results within a factor of 2 for field strengths typical of molecular clouds, with the modified version returning more reliable estimates for slightly weaker fields. However, neither method alone works well for very weak fields, missing them by a factor of up to 150. Taking the geometric mean of both methods estimates even the weakest fields accurately within a factor of 2.5. Limited telescope resolution leads to a systematic overestimation of the field strengths for all methods. Hydrodynamic supersonic turbulence can only prevent local gravitational collapse if the turbulence is driven on scales smaller than the local Jeans lengths in the densest regions, a very severe requirement (Paper I). Magnetic fields have been suggested to support molecular clouds either magnetostatically or via magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Whereas the first mechanism would form sheet-like clouds, the second mechanism not only could exert a pressure onto the gas counteracting the gravitational forces, but could lead to a transfer of turbulent kinetic energy down to smaller spatial scales via MHD wave interactions. This turbulent magnetic cascade might provide sufficient energy at small scales to halt local collapse. We test this hypothesis with MHD simulations at resolutions up to 256^3 zones, done with ZEUS-3D. We first derive a resolution criterion for self-gravitating, magnetized gas: in order to prevent collapse of magnetostatically supported regions due to numerical diffusion, the minimum Jeans length must be resolved by four zones. Resolution of MHD waves increases this requirement to roughly six zones. We then find that magnetic fields cannot prevent local collapse unless they provide magnetostatic support. Weaker magnetic fields do somewhat delay collapse and cause it to occur more uniformly across the supported region in comparison to the hydrodynamical case.
